Amsterdam tops London as most attractive destination for hotel investment

London has been replaced by Amsterdam as Europe’s most attractive hotel investment destination, according to new research from Deloitte.

The annual survey of more than 100 senior hospitality figures also found Chinese and North American investors are expected to dominate the European hotel investment market in 2017. Some 62% of respondents to the survey said they see China as the biggest source of inbound investments into Europe, up from 51% last year, while North America followed with 46%. More than a third (34%) ranked Amsterdam in the top spot for hotel investment, followed by London (32%) which had previously held the top spot for the last two years. Barcelona (28%) and Dublin (24%) followed, with Berlin and Madrid (18%) joint fifth. Following 2015’s bumper year for mergers and acquisitions in the sector, Deloitte said deal flow in 2016 has been more subdued. Nevertheless, hotel executives are optimistic about the investment opportunities that lie ahead, with more than a third (34%) believing that the European investment cycle is 12-18 months away from peaking. Close to 60% of respondents see disposals and consolidation as prominent investment themes in the next year. More than half (52%) of hotel investors cited geopolitical instability in Europe as their number one concern for 2017, followed by deflation and lack of economic growth on the continent (47%). Significantly, only a quarter were worried about the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, with the various

4

European elections scheduled for 2017 generating greater unease (37%).

With these concerns in mind, one-third of respondents cited the budget segment of the market as being the most attractive for investment in 2017, followed by the upscale (24%) and midscale (20%) segments. Meanwhile, resilience has also been seen in the regions with industry leaders naming Edinburgh (47%) the most attractive hotel investment destination in the UK outside of London, with respondents believing it is now as attractive to investors as the likes of Rome and Lisbon. The Scottish capital was closely followed by Manchester (46%, up from 40% last year) and a resurgent Birmingham (22%, up from 9%). Ikola Reid, director in Deloitte’s hospitality advisory team, said: “In the regions…trading is up as the UK becomes a more affordable and accessible place to visit for overseas tourists. “Furthermore, despite initial uncertainty in the immediate aftermath of the Brexit vote, we have recently seen a rejuvenation of interest from foreign capital driven by their appetite for income and the opportunity to capitalise on sterling’s depreciation.” Slowing economic growth (66%) and increased employee costs (52%), are the principal concerns in the UK’s regions, followed by the fallout from Brexit (42%). Two-thirds (64%) of respondents believe that owners will focus on improving profitability as part of a 2017 strategy.

Confidence in UK inbound tourism at ’12-month high’ Confidence levels among the UK’s hospitality and tourism businesses are at a 12-month high, according to new figures released by trade association UKinbound. The survey of UKinbound members – including hotel groups, tourist attractions and tour operators – found bookings and visitor numbers in July and August were up year-on-year, with the US leading as the top inbound growth market. Some 67% of respondents said they are confident that bookings and visitor revenues will develop positively in the next 12 months, compared with just 42% in May this year. In the survey, 71% of members ranked free movement of visitors from the European Union (EU) as the top policy that the

government should address following the country’s decision to leave the EU.

This was followed by the free movement of migrant workers. Deirdre Wells, CEO, said: “It’s incredibly encouraging to hear that confidence levels have spiked for our members, exceeding those experienced pre and post-Brexit.

“Further positive news was reported via our survey with 44% of our members stating that bookings and visitor numbers in July and August 2016 were up year-on-year.” “The weakness of the pound, increased demand from European markets and better weather were all cited as reasons behind the increase.”

Hadrian Cubicles Add To Shake Shack Style Fast food chain Shake Shack sprouted from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in Manhattan in 2001. All UK locations feature Hadrian Elite Stainless Steel toilet cubicles in the washrooms including one of the latest to open in the St David’s Centre in Cardiff. Hadrian cubicles are manufactured in Canada and distributed in the UK by Relcross Ltd, the Devizes based door and washroom hardware specialists. This modern day “roadside” burger stand serves up a menu of burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard, shakes, beer, wine and more and now boasts 100 outlets worldwide, about half of them in the USA. Shake Shack were familiar with Hadrian toilet cubicles in the USA and were delighted to find they were readily available in the UK too but with specifications adjusted to match UK requirements with longer cubicle doors and sightline gaps around the door edges eliminated. The Elite cubicles are finished in brushed stainless steel and they don’t just look good but are highly durable with easy clean low maintenance. Like Shake Shack, Hadrian are very committed to sustainability. Hadrian’s products feature a high recycled content with the stainless steel cubicles made from a total of 91% recycled content split 76% post consumer material and 15% pre-consumer material. They are also available powder coated to match any RAL colour or in a natural “galvannealed” steel finish. The ladies’ and men’s washrooms at Shake Shack in Cardiff each feature two floor mounted, headrail braced, stainless steel toilet cubicles with the addition of two matching urinal screens in the men’s washroom. Hadrian’s stainless steel is corrosion resistant to chemical cleaners, spray washing, and sanitizing agents and provides the most fire-resistant toilet partition material available. A Shake Shack spokesman said “When it comes to Shake Shack’s supply chain, we lead with excellence, integrity and strong values every day. We’re committed to our mission to “Stand For Something Good” to ensure that Shake Shack and our business partners are held to the highest standards of conduct through lawful, ethical and fair business practices.” Relcross Marketing Director Stuart McMaster said “with Hadrian Cubicles we can offer the best from both sides of the Atlantic with world leading manufacturing and design quality made to British specifications and styles.” The Cardiff restaurant joins 3 other UK Shake Shacks in Covent Garden, Westfield Stratford and New Oxford Street, all in London, with more expected soon.

Ecovery Ecovery Innovations was launched in 2012 to provide energy saving products and services to lower carbon emissions and operating costs for the foodservice and hospitality industry. Inspiration for the business came to founder Eric Phillips midway through his 30-year career designing and installing commercial kitchens. “Whilst the industry has made progress in reducing carbon emissions, I could see that certain equipment may never become efficient because of the requirements that operators put on them,” he explains. “So I set out to find ways of utilising the energy discarded by these appliances.” Phillips claims to have seen a “huge spike” in the appetite for energy reduction products and solutions in commercial kitchens over the past few years, with concern for the environment as well as the bottom line at the forefront of every responsible operator’s mind. The company’s’ brands KERS (Kitchen Energy Recovery Systems), Controlled Ozone and Grease, all offer their own designed and manufactured products that reduce emissions and utility bills. Phillips says the firm uses a proven matrix to show the potential emission savings and ROI for each individual project.

KERS can heat up to 2500 litres of water to 65c per day without the use of any utility costs, the company’s heat exchangers can be fitted over Electric or Gas Salamander, Gas Fryers. Solid Tops, Bratt Pans and Pizza Ovens.

Controlled Ozone Units have been developed by Ecovery Innovations to efficiently control cooking odours, the units offer a fully controllable Gaseous Ozone Injection for use in controlling odours from kitchen extraction, toilets, bin stores and staff changing rooms, all of this with minimal power usage.

Grease brand uses the high efficiency of Franke Cascade Filters and RY-Electrostatic Precipitator’s to control grease and smoke within with the kitchen extraction system.

Ecovery Innovations Continues to work to find cost efficient answers to the problems that the modern foodservice industry operators are facing daily.

Dalata Hotels acquires Cardiff’s Clayton Hotel for £24m

Dalata Hotels, represented by estate agency Savills, has bought the Clayton Hotel in Cardiff from a private vendor for £24m. Dalata – Ireland’s largest hotel operator – is the current occupier of the 216-bedroom hotel and has bought the fourstar property, which features seven modern conference rooms and two restaurants, in an off-market deal. Dermot Crowley, deputy CEO business development and finance at Dalata, said: “Clayton Hotel Cardiff has performed very strongly this year. We are delighted to be able to purchase the freehold interest of the hotel. “This transaction is consistent with our stated strategy of buying out the freehold interests of those leased properties with future unpredictable rent reviews.” The deal comes after Savills’ latest UK Hotel Investment report, which found overseas investors accounted for £809.9m of transactions to date – £297.8m was invested in the third quarter of the year alone.

Montcalm opens doors Exeter fire rips to sixth property through ‘England’s oldest hotel’

Luxury hotel group Montcalm has opened the doors to its sixth property, the Montcalm Royal London House in London’s famous Finsbury Square.

Firefighters are battling a fire in Exeter which is threatening what is believed to be the oldest hotel in England.

The fire is thought to have started at an art gallery facing Exeter Cathedral, and has already destroyed neighbouring buildings and spread to the Royal Clarence Hotel, the roof of which has already been destroyed. Local historian Dr Todd Gray told BBC News that the buildings under threat and those already destroyed were “hugely significant” for the city. Fire crews are currently at work at the site – a block of buildings on Cathedral Yard – using six breathing apparatus, one main jet, two monitors from a hydro platform, two ground monitors and also a drone. A statement from Somerset & Devon Fire and Rescue Service said crews were making “steady progress” and police have closed off the area. A spokesperson from the hotel said: “We are continuing to monitor the situation and send our sympathy to our neighbours and all those affected by the fire.”

8

Situated close to Liverpool Street station and Shoreditch, the 253-bedroom hotel has been transformed from an office building into a five-star property with views of London’s city skyline. The hotel’s bedrooms have been designed to include a high IT-spec in each room, with 10GB bandwidth capacity on demand, iPad docking stations, 55” TV screens, and a complimentary smartphone service. The hotel’s two restaurants, two bars and room service operations will be run by acclaimed restaurateurs Tom and Ed Martin of ETM Group, – owner of The Jugged Hare, The Botanist in Sloane Square and The Botanist in Broadgate Circle.

The current pipeline properties will provide more than 2,500 hotel jobs and add more than 4,500 rooms. “This is an extremely exciting time for Marriott as we significantly grow our footprint in the Australia, New Zealand and Pacific region, and continue to build on our leadership position in gateway markets,” said Craig S. Marriott International is set to expand rapidly across Australia in particular over the next few years. The world’s largest hotel company already has a strong market presence in the key gateway cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, and will be entering emerging primary and secondary destinations, with the signings of Four Points by Sheraton Parramatta, The Westin Resort & Spa Coolum, Aloft Adelaide and Sheraton Adelaide Hotel. Marriott International is on track to boast the largest portfolio of upper upscale and luxury brands and properties across the Pacific region by 2020.

“We currently have seven of our 30 brands represented here and we look forward to introducing more in the coming years.”

Nessie hunter named ‘Ambassador of the Year’ at tourism awards A Loch Ness Monster hunter who has devoted half his life to searching for the mythical creature has been honoured by tourism leaders for helping to promote Loch Ness. Steve Feltham, who this year marks 25 years as a full-time ‘monster seeker’, was named Ambassador of the Year at the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards (HITA). He was one of the 16 winners announced, including cafes, cruises, birdwatchers and hotels. The Ambassador title is a special award given by the HITA board to an individual who ‘goes the extra mile’ in contributing to the success of tourism in the Highlands and Islands. Craig Ewan, HITA chairman, said: “Our worthy winner has immersed himself in a narrative which has become as popular as the area, attracting over 1 million visitors annually and generating in excess of £30m to the local economy. “He has contributed to the legend and become part of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the world.” Feltham’s fascination for the loch started during a family holiday in 1970 which included a visit to the Loch Ness Investigation

Bureau, a team of volunteers who each summer set up a makeshift camp near Urquhart Castle. In 1991, while in his 20s, he gave up his house and job in the family burglar alarm company in Dorset and moved to the Highlands to follow his dream. He settled in the nearby village of Dores, sustaining himself by making model monsters. Feltham’s name has become synonymous with the world-famous loch and he has also been recognised by the Guinness Book of World Record for the longest continuous vigil hunting for the Loch Ness monster. Hospitality businesses around Loch Ness regard him as an “asset to tourism” and the awards organisers said he is a “walking PR company” for the promotion of Loch Ness as a tourist destination, having featured in countless media programmes and articles about Nessie and the area. Feltham said: “Winning this award makes me realise that what I’ve been doing for two and a half decades doesn’t just make my heart sing, it has a knock-on effect for the tourism industry in the Highlands of Scotland.”

Flexfurn

Launches Two New Modular Design Collections

Under the name X-Design Flexfurn, the Belgian manufacturer of folding and stacking furniture, is launching two new innovative product lines onto the market. The LAZE collection and the FLOW collection have three characteristics in common: they are light, extremely strong and modular. Moreover, they have been designed with the focus on attractive contemporary design and are suitable for outdoor use. They meet the market requirements of catering entrepreneurs, event organisers, offices, shopping centres, care institutions, etc. who are looking for affordable ergonomic and flexible design furniture. LAZE is a collection of seating furniture and FLOW is the table and bench collection. An outdoor version has been added to the popular KUBO collection. For the design of the new LAZE collection Flexfurn worked together with Boonen Design Studio. At the start of this year Frédéric Boonen received a Henry van de Velde Award with his Buggybooker as best product on the market.

The LAZE lounge sets With the LAZE lounge set Flexfurn meets the increasing demand for functional yet exclusive outdoor lounge furniture. Industrial designer Frédéric Boonen took as a basis here the keywords lounge, design, light, modular and outdoor. The result is the surprising LAZE collection. The LAZE chair is the centrepiece of the collection. A particularly light shell-shaped seat with back support. The rounded shapes are the result of the rotation moulding production method. The high-quality polyethylene used for this makes the seats light, strong, maintenance-friendly and UV-resistant, four important basic characteristics for outdoor furniture. Because of the fine grain of the 100% recyclable polyethylene, the LAZE collection is very easy to keep clean. A number of clever details provide extra durability and ease of use. There are four wear-resistant feet underneath the LAZE chair so that it stands firmly on the ground and does not get damaged. Using the handy connector you can click the chairs neatly and discretely into the configuration of your choice. The lumen LED lights can be attached to the connector by a handy magnet, creating surprising light effects. The LAZE chair can be used with or without cushions. Chair cush-

ions are available in high-quality Sunbrella fabrics and are filled with EZY dry foam, a foam with the right specifications for intensive outdoor use. The LAZE ottoman is the perfect addition to the chair. If the word multifunctional didn’t already exist, we would have had to invent it for the ottoman! The ottoman can also be used as a small table and as a pouf, but equally well as a small seat, ice bucket, plant container or protection for parasol feet. Of course, the features that make the chair so interesting also apply to the ottoman: wear-resistant feet, connector, magnetic lumen LED lights and cushions in various designs. As an extra with every ottoman you receive a table top and a cap at the bottom of the hollow space for easy water drainage. The chairs and ottomans can be stacked together on a handy trolley that enables the transport of up to ten units.

The FLOW tables and benches

The FLOW grande is a high long bar table. The FLOW dinner is the low shorter version. These two lightweight frames have easily interchangeable table tops in melamine, bamboo or solid core composite material. Melamine is the standard material for indoor use and is available in a variety of colours. Bamboo not only looks very attractive, but is also suitable for outdoor use in good weather conditions. Finally, the solid core composite tops in white or

black are ideal for heavy duty outdoor use. The bamboo version is particularly interesting due to the specific properties of this natural product. Bamboo is 27% stronger and 50% more water-resistant than oak. A bamboo leaf has no knots and is resistant to insects and fungi. Flexfurn ensures that only FSC-certified sustainable bamboo is used for production. The FLOW benches have exactly the same characteristics as the tables: an aluminium folding frame and interchangeable seats. If required, a wide variety of cushions are also available. James Verbeeck, CEO Flexfurn: “Outdoor is a fast-growFor those customers who are ing segment with a lot of rea looking for an alternative to quirements of its own. The approach to the design of the FLOW collection was identical to that for the LAZE collection with an extra dimension: the tables and benches had to be folding. For this reason James Verbeeck opted for a lightweight aluminium frame to which he added extra stability with handy adjusting feet. The high-quality white coating is ideal for events and outdoor use. Strut and Cluck

When I first heard about an only turkey restaurant I was not only intrigued but slightly sceptical, simply because I THOUGHT there wasn’t much you could do with turkey other than put cranberry on it. I was very wrong!! As I walked into Strut & Cluck on the bustling Commercial St at a stone’s throw away from the world famous Shoreditch I was taken in by the lively atmosphere & what seemed to be full of happy chatty friends enjoying the fabulous menu. The rustic but yet contemporary décor had a very homely feel with its quant little touches, such as the uneven cutting in of the paint job. The tapas style menu with various turkey based foods & fresh ingredients is a novel idea and brilliantly executed through Middle Eastern flavours. The generous servings & off the bone meat with the sharp but sweet tastes

Dimplex’s impressively realistic 3D flame and sound effects from the Opti-myst® and Opti-V® range of electric fires provide a year-round, fuss free way for hotels, bars and restaurants to gain the ambience of a real fire without the mess and safety concerns commonly associated with the naked flame. The Dimplex Opti-myst effect, which has already proved popular in a variety of settings including hotels, restaurants, bars, domestic properties and even TV and theatre productions, uses a unique water mist based technology to create the illusion of real smoke and flames – an effect that truly has to be seen to be believed. The Opti-myst cassette range has been specially developed for commercial installations, combining the unique effect in a series of connectable cassette models of varying sizes for full design and installation flexibility. Dimplex’s Opti-V, is a stunningly realistic electric flame effect which combines real fire footage displayed on a high definition LCD screen with a unique illusory technique to create a 3D effect of flickering flames – complete with smoke and burning embers. Both flame effects enable hotels, bars and restaurants to deliver all the ambience of a fire in a leisure environment, creating opportunities that would not otherwise be available with real flames because of safety issues or unwelcome heat. Jonathan Smith, product marketing manager at Dimplex, said: “Dimplex’s Opti-myst technology has already proved extremely popular in the domestic fires market but with the Opti-myst cassette range, we are pleased to offer hoteliers, bar and restaurant owners the flexibility to bring it to their own showcase properties. “

Most Stylish Commercial Venues Have Been Named in Nationwide Awards

The Hilden Style Awards, powered by Vision Support Services, opened for entries back in May this year and sought to uncover the hidden gems in hospitality, restaurant and care home design. The Awards, which were open to small to medium or independent venues, aimed to find the crème-de-la-crème of smaller, more intimate venues which may otherwise have gone unnoticed amongst the larger chains and groups. The nine finalists were revealed earlier in September and following visits by Vision representatives to each of the establishments, the winners were then chosen following an intensive judging process. Hotel of the moment, Hotel Gotham in Manchester, took the crown for most stylish independent hotel or B&B, hot on the heels of its numerous accolades including Outstanding New Hotel from the Independent Hotel Show. Located in the heart of upmarket Mayfair, sketch restaurant won the coveted title of most stylish restaurant for its quirky and unique design. The restaurant is no stranger to exciting wins; placing 18th in the world’s best restaurant list by Restaurant magazine in 2005. Meanwhile the brand new most stylish care home category went to Bentley House, part of the Signature Group in Hertford. The judges were impressed with the level of thought that went

32

into it and the attention to detail was impeccable throughout. Celebrating individual style and a keen eye for design, the annual awards came back for 2016 with a brand new look; new judges, new prizes and new categories. For the first time ever, global textiles giant Vision decided to open up the awards for care homes; recognising the increasing effort that healthcare establishments have been putting in to their interior design choices. Judging this year’s awards were: Lee Birchall; Architect and Managing Director of DV8 Designs, Vitoria Hargreaves; Vision’s Hospitality Sales Manager, Gemma Ralph; Deputy Editor of Hospitality Interiors magazine, Ellie Tennant; Interior Design Journalist, Lucy Forsyth; Vision’s Healthcare Interior Design Specialist and Jeremy Tring; Editor of Eat.Drink.Sleep magazine. The lucky winners will receive a double-page spread in the annual Hilden Style Guide; a definitive guide to hospitality interiors and trends, £500 to spend at Vision’s online store, a case of champagne, a pair of luxury Liddell bathrobes and a personalised glass trophy amongst others. Restaurant Design Show

Post Show Report The Restaurant Design show’s debut at London’s ExCeL in September ensured the two day event firmly lived up to its title of being the UK’s largest and most comprehensive event specifically aimed at restaurant, bar, and café interior designers.

A rich variety of interior design’s most distinguished figures helped form the show’s outstanding line up of speakers, and included Anouska Lancaster, one the UK’s leading interior designers and founder of Noushka Design; Robert Angell, founder of Robert Angell Design International; Ariane Steinbeck, managing director of RPW Design; plus many more.

A total of 1,585 restaurant, bar and café owners, designers, and a variety of industry professionals working across the sector packed the exhibition hall to connect with 120 of the most innovative and visionary suppliers, immerse themselves in the 50 expert-led seminars, network with industry professionals, and come away with the very best advice, ideas, and insight into new trends.

Visitors have benefitted greatly from their time spent at the show; early results show that 72% of visitors are now doing business; 87% have confirmed they intend to return to ExCeL for next year’s edition; and a fantastic 75% of exhibitors have already secured their stand for 2017.

Running alongside the very first edition of Restaurant Tech Live, as well as the more familiar Takeaway & Restaurant Innovation Expo and Street Food Live, an accumulative total of 8,716 visitors flooded through ExCeL’s doors.

Next September’s Restaurant Design is already set to be even bigger; the show has been extended to include the latest designs, trends, innovations, and insight in bar design, and next year’s Restaurant & Bar Design will open its doors to even more restaurant and bar managers, owners, designers, and innovators.

A total of 2,353 restaurant, bar and café owners, techpreneurs, and a variety of industry professionals working across the sector packed the exhibition hall to connect with 200 of the most innovative and visionary suppliers, immerse themselves in the 150 expert-led seminars and BT Wi-Fi panel sessions, network with industry professionals, and celebrate the most innovative in the industry with the Restaurant Tech Live Awards.

Avenista Table Reservations also provide all-inclusive access to their incredible support team (awards surely coming sometime soon!) who can implement booking strategies and take care of all of the administrative duties involved in managing the software too. It’s no surprise that Avenista® customers tend to be busy, extremely well-run restaurants who are always looking for that extra bit of efficiency and want it without hefty prices attached. Unlike so many booking systems Avenista® do not operate a Diner portal and so will never attempt to sell tables from competitor restaurants or gazump a restaurant’s Google ranking.

Never heard of Avenista®? Well, perhaps you can be forgiven. With the stampede towards basic, web-based booking systems in recent years many restaurateurs completely overlooked this unassuming UK company, attracted instead by the fanfares of the big booking operators. But one size does not fit all and having experienced high running costs or poor service delivery many restaurateurs are now looking elsewhere and finding Avenista has intelligent, super-easy software with everything they need and more for often a fraction of the cost. With more than 10 years’ experience delivering Table Reservation software the team at Avenista® know what makes busy restaurants tick and have continuously honed and polished their software to make running a Front of House effortless. These days millions of diners are seated each year using Avenista® systems. Oddly perhaps, at Avenista® their mission is for their customers to spend the minimum time possible using the booking software, yet still have the software do exactly what the customer needs, enabling them to spend more time in their restaurants on activities where they can really add value. To achieve this they worked on making Avenista® intelligent and efficient without taking away any of the features that allow restaurants to deliver really personal service to their Diners. And, so keen are they to deliver on the mission they

As Kerry Beswick (Managing Director of Avenista®) says – “We have absolutely no relationship with Diners at all. Everything we do is focused on the restaurateur. We are all about providing the absolute best tools and services for our customers to help them make the best restaurants.” With an impressive client roster, awesome features (including a new online payment feature for events and deposits – saving restaurants huge amounts of time, and reducing no-shows), and pricing lower than anything comparable, many restaurateurs are now getting the message and switching to Avenista® saving themselves time, money and headaches.

International brands and a star who turn to NFS for hospitality

As an international software company, NFS Technology Group has seen some significant wins for its hospitality software as hotels and restaurants gear up to the digital world.

A

major driver for customers – not surprisingly given the challenging global economic conditions – is operational efficiency. That’s caused keen interest in NFS software including the hotel property management system roomMaster and restaurant electronic point of sale (EPoS) software Aloha.

42

“Both of these advanced and easy-to-use represent the opportunity for hospitality organisations to streamline their operations, gain detailed insight into their business through comprehensive reports, and create a superb customer experience that increases loyalty,” said NFS Chief Executive Luis De Souza.

“roomMaster also helps hotels take advantage of online booking easily and without manual intervention, saving staff time, driving up occupancy and providing genuine convenience for guests.” Customer sensitivities need to be respected, so the names of some companies choosing to be supported this year by NFS and its award-winning 24/7 global helpdesk cannot be published.

A provider of luxury serviced apartments that is a long-time client of NFS, and said it was a natural choice when they were on the expansion trail and looking for a PMS for a second site.

t

Aloha also saw significant wins and welcomed new customers including:

t

An award-winning chain of steak restaurants, which will implement the solution in their central London location next year, and which also aims to implement in an internationallyfamed venue in 2017.

t

t

A customer downloads the Zapper app, searches for restaurants, and finds the establishment. He or she orders a meal; then scans the QR code to securely pay their bill, and receives a payment confirmation. They can leave feedback, and are rewarded with a loyalty stamp based on their spend of number or visits.

The first of four planned outlets for an international brand that is opening a 900-seater venue open seven days a week.

Luis De Souza said: “A recent survey showed that speed of service may be even more important to dining outlets than the menu, so EPoS and payment options such as Zapper can really help a restaurant or hotel differentiate their F&B offering.”

A world-famous nightclub, with the solution encompassing 14 tills, door entry, VIP and the total club.

NFS has also recently implemented iQWebBook, an affordable cloud-based booking engine for hotel websites.

NFS – a Microsoft Gold Partner - has also had a successful year working with its partners, who include Crestron, AMX, Cisco, Softcat and Siteminder, and has recently added online payment system Zapper to its family.

The company, which operates in the UK, US and South Africa, is also seeing hotels taking advantage of its meeting room scheduler and booking software Rendezvous – already a favourite of venues and office-based organisations.

“Many hotels want to take more advantage of their small meeting rooms, and Rendezvous helps them offer easy and efficient access to availability and booking.” Rendezvous is now available as an online portal offering booking for smaller spaces and late bookings, 24/7, 365 days a year. Luis De Souza says it’s been a highly successful year for his technology group, and sees plenty of opportunity ahead in 2017. “The hospitality marketplace continues to be extraordinarily competitive – and the establishments that take advantage of the tools that can help them offer the best guest experience in the most efficient way are the ones who will win in the coming year,” he said. * Find out more about roomMaster, Aloha and Rendezvous from NFS Technology Group– visit www.nfs-hospitality.com or call 0800 731 8451.

How to increase your average transaction value with intelligentpos ‘Would you like a chocolate bar for only a pound?’ A question we hear almost every time we choose the human cashier over the automatic machine in the supermarket. However, this is far from being a mere challenge to our diets, but a detailedplanned strategy designed by marketing experts. KINGFISHER BEER LAUNCHES NEW ASIAN CIDER INTO THE UK ON-TRADE

December 2016

Kingfisher Beer Europe Ltd announces the launch of Peacock Cider, a new cider brand created specifically to pair with Asian food. The launch brings an opportunity for the UK’s 12,500 Asian restaurants to capitalise on the growing popularity of cider with UK consumers. Created in collaboration with cider experts Aspall, Peacock Cider is an easy drinking apple cider that has been designed to complement the vast flavours in Asian foods, providing a burst of refreshment to balance aromatic spices. A premium product offering, the cider has an ABV of 4.8% and features 100% fresh pressed culinary and bittersweet cider apples. Celebrated across Asia, the Peacock was the natural emblem for the brand design. Not only is it the national bird of India, Peacocks roam wild in China and symbolise love and kind heartedness in Japan. The distinct packaging aims to encapsulate the vibrant colours of countries across Asia from Pakistan to Indonesia. The launch is a response to an increasing consumer demand for cider, an opportunity which is current untapped in the UK’s Asian restaurant segment, with 38% of restaurants not currently selling cider in any format. As well as category growth, market research* underlines the appetite for the brand, with 73% of consumers saying they would choose a cider with Asian food and 97% of cider consumers saying they would drink an Asian cider if available. Gemma Watkins, Senior Brand Manager, Kingfisher Beer Europe, says, “We are excited to be bringing an innovative and premium new offering to the restaurant market that will broaden our customers existing drinks offer and provide incremental opportunities to sell more. An extremely positive pre-sale period has proved this new cider is a welcomed addition to the category”. Peacock Cider will be available to the on-trade from 21st November, in 12 x 500ml cases. Farm Frites Launches its Ultimate Chip... ...for the ultimate offering Potato grower and manufacturer Farm Frites has announced the arrival of its Ultimate Chip. Launched as the company celebrates 25 years in the UK, the Ultimate Chip offers an authentic, high quality accompaniment side dish for premium casual dining operators. Manufactured at the peak of freshness from two of Farm Frites’ best potato varieties, the Ultimate Chip contrasts a perfect fluffy inner for a melt in the mouth feel and a crispy outer for the perfect crunch. It offers a truly rustic feel by being ‘perfectly imperfect’ in design; popular among consumers and for operators who offer a premium ‘gastro’ menu. “The development of this product has been years in the making and we are so proud of our Ultimate Chip, explains Nic Townsend, marketing manager UK & Ireland, Farm Frites. “The UK gets the first taste of this product because it has been developed for us – we had valuable input from a team of chefs who work in the premium burger and casual dining sectors and know that we have taken our time to get this right. “The texture of our Ultimate Chip is second to none. We have created a full chip that is effectively a roast potato in terms of its inner fluffiness and external crisp. The imperfect lengths in each serving will offer an authentic product with more of a focus on texture, crispiness and taste.” “The Ultimate Chip goes beyond triple cooked and is based on a ten step process – just like the professionals would like to do in their own kitchens. Using professionally prepared and frozen chips has many benefits over cooking from scratch; waste reductions, less mess for easier cleaning and reduced health and safety concerns that can sometimes surround farmed vegetables. “We hope that our Ultimate Chip can take the strain off busy chefs and offer time savings with the end result to match with the chips they make themselves. Our company vision is to grow from potatoes to happy faces and we are confident that our Ultimate Chip is a large step in the right direction.” The Ultimate Chip is stored frozen and can be deep fried in small quantities for just 4-5 minutes. It is fully allergen free and reaches the Governments Salt Pledge target. For further information about the Ultimate Chip contact Farm Frites on 01452 415845 or visit www.farmfrites.com or email salesuk@farmfrites.com

Innovative Food Safety App Delivers 15% improvement in Results Training staff in matters of food hygiene is a legal requirement that all food business must satisfy. This compliance training can be a real challenge within the catering industry where it is often seen as very boring. Additionally, the workforce can be transient and have a heavy reliance on overseas workers. A Game to Train Food Safety is a new and seriously impressive gaming App that can be played on computers, tablets & smart phones. It addresses a number of the challenges faced by food & drink operators recruiting and training staff in an increasingly diverse and dynamic market. Clever use of graphics and game mechanics means that there is less reliance on text, a boon for foreign workers and those with learning difficulties. 15% Better Results through Engagement Developed by experienced food safety trainers, A Game To Train Food Safety has a core objective to help food and drink operators deliver better outcomes at lower cost. Everyone loves games and ‘Serious Games’ are proven to deliver better engagement and higher levels of motivation to learn. The

immersive environment is particularly attractive to Millennial Generations (today’s 18-30 year olds) who have grown up with computers and gaming technology. Developers tested A Game To Train Food Safety with a market leading but traditional e-learning course proving that as well as being more enjoyable and more stimulating for the users, candidates performed 15% better in an identical test. This research also proved that it was more time efficient with learners completing the course over an hour quicker. The game has been assessed by the professional body, CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) and has been given ‘Assured Status’ so business operators can be sure of its quality. Already being used by a number of respected food and drink businesses, A Game To Train Food Safety delivers food safety training in a fun and engaging way. Players

are put in the position of a restaurant supervisor where they complete 8 stages that reflect the main areas within a catering business. Within the game there are lots of features normally associated with popular games such as challenges, rewards and leader boards. This is where learners can compete within their work place and within their wider organisation which are both great motivators to do well at the game. It is a truly unique product designed for food handlers in catering operations which reflects the changing nature of entrants to the food industry in terms of age (millennials) and nationality, the benefits of gaming and the wide availability of mobile devices. Taking action on antibiotics Do you know what’s in your supply chain?

‘Global pledges to stamp out drug-resistant infections ’ has dominated recent media headlines and following this extensive publicity and growing awareness surrounding antimicrobial resistance (AMR), Trade Interchange urges foodservice and hospitality business owners to monitor the use of antibiotics in their food supply chain. Mike Edmunds, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Trade Interchange, explains: “With almost half of foodservice Purchasing Managers and operators stating supplier risks such as antibiotics in the food supply chain as a significant hazard , many businesses are putting responsible sourcing policies into place – but there is still more to be done. AMR is no longer just a threat, it has become reality and worldwide there is still an estimated 63 tons of antibiotics that are being used in livestock per year - predicted to increase by 99% by 2030 . With growing amounts of contaminated meat, poultry and fish containing bacteria such as MRSA, linked to the over-use of antibiotics, charities, industries and consumers alike are putting pressure on large corporations to end antibiotic use in the livestock supply - and for good reason! This starts by recognising the source of concern and continuing to monitor suppliers and produce to ensure best-practice compliance on antibiotic usage. “Over 60% of operators have not adequately invested in supplier management software and are leaving their supply chains vulnerable due to outdated monitoring techniques. What’s more, over a quarter of businesses are still using a paper-based system and 40% a basic spreadsheet to record and update crucial supplier information , such as antibiotic use in aqua and agriculture. These manual, complicated and time-consuming

54

ways of monitoring put foodservice and hospitality businesses at great risk of reputational damage and could result in being caught up in a food safety scandal. “Disclosing information to customers about the use of antibiotics in the supply chain doesn’t need to be complex, with some meat processors even starting to use an ‘antibiotic-free’ logo . However, with the continual increase of primary suppliers, i.e. going straight to source and not buying through a wholesaler, often as a result of consumer demands for local produce, the scope of work to audit supply chains is potentially vast. “Companies that can obtain transparency in their supply chain, by using software such as specialist Supplier Information Management (SIM) systems, have a clear advantage when simplifying

auditing processes and helping to reduce an apocalyptic scenario, as Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer, has warned of in AMR increases at its current rate. At Trade Interchange, our ARCUS® SIM software collects, stores, and streamlines the process for managing supplier information. Users can create a standardised central database of all suppliers, helping to prevent, minimise and track supplier risks, such as antibiotic contamination, efficiently and effectively. It has never been truer that failing to prepare is preparing to fail.” To find out more about Trade Interchange, and the ARCUS® Sup plier Management platform, please visit www.tradeinterchange.com and our full research report into the foodservice sector can be downloaded here.
