EAT. DRINK. SLEEP February 2016

BBC MasterChef winner Steven Edwards to guest at Pennyhill Park Steven Edwards, winner of the BBC’s MasterChef: The Professionals in 2013, is to appear as guest chef at the Latymer, the Michelinstarred restaurant at the five-star Pennyhill Park hotel in Surrey, an Exclusive Hotels and Venues site. On selected dates from 5-20 February, Edwards will bring a range of six-course, £65-per-person tasting menus to the site, which have been specifically designed for the Latymer. Edwards will appear with his business partner Josh Stanzl, with whom he runs the fine-dining pop-up concept Etch, also as part of Exclusive Hotels and Venues. The duo comes to the restaurant following the departure of its former executive head chef, Michael Wignall, at the end of December last year. Wignall first came to Pennyhill Park in 2007 but left last month to take over Michael Caines executive head chef role at Gidleigh Park, Devon. No permanent replacement for him has yet been announced. Edwards’ dishes will include line-caught mackerel with roast celeriac and pickled celery; coffee glazed duck breast and pressed leg with artichoke puree and roasting juices; fillet and belly of Petworth pork with slow-cooked celeriac and mustard; and Twineham grange doughnut with crispy kale, broccoli puree and gherkin. The Valentine’s week menu will feature sea trout carpaccio with tartare, oyster beignet, and oyster mayo; plus roast fillet and tail of Sussex beef with leek and potato purée and charred spring onion; with mango panna cotta, passion fruit sorbet and fennel for dessert. The BBC show winner previously worked as head chef at the Camellia restaurant at South Lodge near Horsham in West Sussex, also part of the Exclusive Hotels and Venues group. He favours the use of locally-sourced, fresh produce to create simple food. Julian Tomlin, general manager at Pennyhill Park, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Steven Edwards to our kitchens at the Latymer [of which] we are immensely proud. Steven’s unrelenting passion, unique talent for marrying wonderful flavours, and his creative artistry in the kitchen will complement the restaurant offering perfectly.”

Splendid Restaurants to support Jack & Alice expansion Jack & Alice, the fledgling wine bar, pantry concept led by former Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) retail director Mark Hall, has come under the umbrella of Splendid Restaurants, the sister company of Splendid Hospitality Group that currently owns 19 hotels across the UK. According to BigHospitality’s sister website M&C Allegra , Splendid will support the continued expansion of Jack & Alice, which recently opened its first site in Gerrard’s Cross, Buckinghamshire.

Flexitarian diets set to rocket in 2016 The popularity of flexitarianism is set to reach new heights in 2016, following recent figures from consumer analyst Mintel that showed 35% of Brits now identified as ‘semi-vegetarian’. The number of flexitarians is set to rise by 10% in the UK next year, Mintel said. The eating-out sector has responded to this by boosting the number of vegetarian dishes on menus. Meat-free dishes accounted for 31% of new menu items across the eatingout sector, which was up from 18% in 2014. Research by Vegetarian Express earlier in the year claimed 71% of those asked wanted to see more vegetarian options on menus, with more protein and better health qualities incorporated into them. More than half (52%) of consumers also told Mintel they believed vegetarian options were better for the environment.

‘Vegetarian market growing’ Managing director at Vegetarian Express Will Matier, said: “There’s no doubt about it, the vegetarian market is growing. You just have to look at the number of dedicated vegetarian restaurants opening up on the high street to see evidence of that. “If caterers are to compete, they must offer more choice – not just in terms of the number of dishes, but also the quality of food.” Most popular vegetarian ingredients: Beans (63%), Nuts (48%), Tofu (37%) Beef dishes dropping As a result of the rise in flexitarians and the subsequent increase in vegetarian options, the number of beef dishes on menus had dropped significantly in popularity. Just 8% of new menus incorporated beef into dishes, compared with 18% in 2014.

Camden Town Brewery Taken Over By AB InBev

Working with Hatch Mansfield and private investors, the team has purchased 69 hectares of farmland at Stone Stile Farm in Kent, forty hectares of which will be planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines to produce premium English Sparkling Wines. President of Champagne Taittinger, Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger, said: “We have dreamt for a number of years of working with our dear friends in the UK to create a special Franco/British project. Built on the values of friendship, this venture will create something special to show our appreciation of the UK support for Champagne – it is Champagne Taittinger’s number

We are very excited that this dream is now becoming a reality. A former orchard, the Domaine Evremond land is near Chilham in Kent, close to Canterbury and Faversham. Master of Wine Stephen Skelton MW, one of the UK’s leading viticulture consultants, has worked as viticultural advisor for the team to secure this ideal plot for vineyard development. The chosen plot is a maximum of 80 metres above sea level with chalk soil and south-facing slopes: described as an ideal terroir to plant and grow high quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines.

Glendalough releases Wild Autumn Botanical Gin

Irish craft distiller Glendalough has released the last in its range of seasonal gins, called Wild Autumn Botanical Gin. Every release starts with a core of six botanicals – juniper, coriander, angelica root, orange peel, bitter almond and orris root. With the help of a local forager, Geraldine Kavanagh, local and seasonal botanicals are added, resulting in a similar botanical mix over the years for each season. Wild Autumn Botanical Gin incorporates plants such as heather flowers, meadowsweet, yarrow, fraughan berries, and many more. It’s suitably autumnal, with ripe citrus fruit and some herbal, minty notes, leading to a warming, zesty palate with citrus sweetness balanced by a brisk, pleasingly bitter finish. It’s a bit of a no-brainer if your cocktail list itself is seasonal. Because the only thing better than foraging is getting someone else to do it for you. Four of those seasonal gins are released per year. Look out for the Winter variant, whose botanicals are currently being foraged. It’ll hit backbars early February. 41% abv, £39.99-£49.99/70cl, Lightbox Brands, 020 3239 2939

Popular London craft brewer Camden Town Brewery is being bought by the world’s biggest beer maker, AB InBev. The deal values Camden Town Brewery at around £85 million – Camden declined to comment on the value. The takeover drew immediate criticism from craft beer purists, many of who view the major brewing companies with suspicion. James Watt, one of the founders of craft beer group Brewdog, rounded on his rival for selling out to a global behemoth of the drinks industry. He said Brewdog would no longer stock any Camden Town beers in its bars because it does not sell drinks made by AB InBev. Brewdog even released a video onto social media showing one of their bartenders removing Camden Hells Lager from their menu. Long-time fans of Camden Brewing Company also expressed their disappointment. AB InBev, which makes world known beers like Corona, Becks, Budweiser and Stella Artois is buying 100 per cent of the 5-year-old brewery. Iain Newell, European director of specialities and craft beer at AB InBev, added: “Camden Town Brewery is a creative business with a great range of brands that will complement our existing portfolio. “We will support their ambitious plans for the future, using our expertise and global distribution network to help them get their great beer to more people.” Camden Town Brewery, launched in 2010, now employs 95 people having sold 12 million pints in 2015. The beer is available in more than 1000 pubs and is available in certain supermarkets. Camden plans on building a second brewery in London next year to add to the production it currently has from its Kentish Town brewery. The deal between Camden Town Brewery and AB InBev is expected to be completed by the first week of January.

Hotel-cruise ship cross by designer

Gianluca Santosuosso

February 2016

Called the MORPHotel, this cross between a hotel and a cruise ship is the work of Turin native Gianluca Santosuosso, who has envisioned a hotel with the ability to adapt and move with the ocean currents. The “floatel” ecosystem is developed with a linear, spinal structure about a half a mile in length that changes shape based on the currents. It is designed to slowly travel around the world, docking in cities to let passengers board or disembark. It would be composed of individually connected room capsules, restaurants and luxury facilities, such as a pool. The floating hotel would also feature a helipad so passengers would be able to fly aboard regardless of where it is in the world. Guests would get an ever-changing view from their rooms because the craft will be constantly moving across the ocean -but at a rate slower than an average boat.

St. James’ Group to create a Hotel Indigo in Bath St James’s Hotel Group, a longstanding partner of InterContinental Hotels, has announced that it is building a new 117-bedroom boutique hotel in Bath, which will operate under IHG’s Hotel Indigo franchise. The new hotel will become Hotel Indigo Bath and will be created on the site of Pratt’s & Halcyon hotels in the area. Rather than being a new-build, the new hotel will be completed through a comprehensive refurbishment of a number of Grade-I listed Georgian buildings in the South Parade, including Pratt’s Hotel, The Halcyon and a neighbouring property. Pratt’s Hotel will be temporarily closed from 4th January and The Halcyon from the end of January for the work to take place. This will be St James parent company Somerston’s first Hotel Indigo property and forms part of a larger portfolio of Hotel Indigo hotels being developed by the

group - a clear vote of confidence in the brand. The hotel is expected to open towards the end of 2016. Shaun Robinson, managing director of St James’, commented: “It is good to be starting on site after many months of planning. This is such a good opportunity to create an outstanding boutique hotel right in the heart of Bath, one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations, and Hotel Indigo is just the right brand.” Every Hotel Indigo property is designed to reflect the local neighbourhood and Hotel Indigo Bath will be no exception. From the exterior architecture to the hotel’s interior design and locally inspired menus; every Hotel Indigo is unique to its surroundings, and no two hotels are the same.

Four-star Oxford hotel bids for expansion A plan to expand a fourstar hotel in Oxford by 48 bedrooms has been submitted to the local City Council. The Oxford Spires Four Pillars currently consists of 174 bedrooms but a proposal has been launched by the hotel’s owners to build a 18room block at the back and a 30-room block at the front. Also included in the plans is a project to expand the existing restaurant and bar into

the current car park, which isn’t being used by guests at the moment. Oxford City Council is aiming to make a decision on the plans by Wednesday March 23. The plans, the biggest since the hotel was built in 1999, come as a £5.5m, 83-bedroom Travelodge opened at the bottom of Abingdon Road last month. Oxford Spires said that the plans were not in response to the new budget chain’s arrival.

Aladino’s has a story to tell. “ The Royal Kensington and Chelsea borough is home to some of the best in fine dining restaurants here in the UK. Aladino’s is most certainly no exception to this.

When choosing somewhere to spend the evening which incorporates not only a wonderful dining experience but also the personal touch there is nowhere quite like Aladino’s located on Kensington Church Street. Before I explain the beautifully Egyptian infused Cuisine on offer, I must first tell you about Aladin the Restaurant owner. On arrival there is almost an immediate feel of relaxation as you enter this Alexandrian influenced dining establishment. Aladin will make you feel extremely welcome as he greets and converses with each individual guest for the evening. With his clear passion for people it is a refreshing atmosphere throughout the night. To start I would recommend the Ethical Foie parfait, a tremendous welcome into the world of Egyptian spices whilst taking on the traditional French option you can instantly differentiate the unique flavour

EAT. DRINK. SLEEP February 2016 in which your palette will be participating in for the evening. For me, The Slow-Roasted lamb shank was a must for a main dish. Delicately cooked in Egyptian seasoning as the lamb itself slides off the bone this is a fantastic choice. I was kindly provided a sample of the Confit leg of Duck by my guest which again I hold in high regards due to the infusion of authentic spices and Conventional British style of cooking. Once you have finished the delightful Om Ali dessert, a traditional Alexandrian third course. You will be able to join the fun downstairs at the bar and get to meet some regulars as well as speak with Aladin and his welcoming bar staff. When next visiting London/ Kensington be sure to venture to 38c Kensington Church Street for an evening of storytelling, Fantastic food and great company.

70% ENERGY SAVINGS FOR KITCHEN TABLE An installation of Bright Goods LED filament lamps has helped Kitchen Table achieve energy savings of over 70% at the newly opened dining ‘theatre’. Launched to wide critical acclaim, Kitchen Table wanted to deliver a unique experience to members of its dining audience who are positioned around a theatrically-themed open kitchen. Deep tan leather chairs placed strategically around a brushed aluminium bar-style table ensure that every diner has the best seat in the house. From these seats, diners are able to follow every stage of the meal preparation by Kitchen Table’s Head Chef, Michelin-starred James Knappett. It was important for James and his wife Sandia Chang, who manages the restaurant, to incorporate lighting that would enhance the overall ambience of the unique experience and they opted for the Victoria LED filament lamp from the Bright Goods range. The Victoria is the perfect choice for Kitchen Table. Its innovative blend of 21st Century efficiency and 19th Century styling creates a stunning and welcoming atmosphere within the dining ‘auditorium’. With a classical shape that harks back to a bygone era, complemented by a fully-dimmable warm glow, the Victoria has proved to be one of the most popular offerings on Kitchen Table’s menu. Alongside its classical appearance and unrivalled lighting levels, the super efficient LED Victoria has enabled Kitchen Table to achieve energy savings of over 70% compared to traditional filament lamps. In common with all lamps in the Bright Goods range, the Victoria also offers ten times the lifespan and is covered by a comprehensive two year guarantee.

“We are absolutely delighted with our Victoria lamps,” says Sandia. “Our customers not only appreciate our fine dining experience, they also compliment us on the welcoming atmosphere of our dining ‘theatre’. The vintage look of the lamps is massively on trend and their energy saving performance has given us a fantastic Win-Win result.” For further information, please contact: Saima Shafi LED Eco Lights Tel: 01276 691 230 Email: saima@ledecolights.com www.brightgoods.co.uk

Astro’s “less is more” mirror among Sleep highlights

February 2016

Interior Design

“Less is more”, the creative force for so many iconic objects, is the philosophy behind Astro’s Mascali, launched at Sleep last November. Another highlight was the evocative Atelier range for living and bedrooms.

Evocative Atelier adds to Astro’s product families For living and bedrooms, Astro’s beautifully-designed Atelier range was on show. It has been created to evoke the type of task-lamp you would find in a craftsman’s workshop of old: think toolmaker, architect or jewellery designer. The range forms a significant addition to Astro’s growing number of product families which help create design cohesion in interiors.

With its neat profile, slim bracket and softly rounded base plate Astro’s Mascali LED vanity mirror is created for bathrooms where design really matters. Mascali is the latest variant in Astro’s broad range of illuminated vanity mirrors, all of which are designed to withstand the rigours of heavy contract use while satisfying the aesthetic demands of discerning interior designers. Mascali uses a bright yet even 5.7w LED array to give the market-preferred bathroom colour temperature of 3000K. It is splash-proof, gives powerful 5x magnification and has a discreet switch on the back of the mirror. With its minimal energy requirement and effective LED illumination, Mascali offers the ideal combination of reliable functionality and elegant simplicity for which Astro is renowned.

Atelier has fully-articulated joints to provide maximum a d j u s t a b i l i t y. J a m e s Bassant, who conceived the range, and Rob Speck who engineered it, decided to highlight the design of these joints by leaving them in a raw polished aluminium finish, regardless of the colour of the lamp (they come in white, black or natural aluminium). Atelier come a wide range of options, including table, clamp, wall and floor versions in all three finishes.

The Parma wall light is a study in clean, simple lines. Only high-grade plaster produces such a smooth finish with edges that give the crisp appearance of a just ironed shirt. Combine this with its striking beam pattern and the Parma brings an architectural purity to any interior. Because good design demands simplicity.

Blending business and coffee since 2006 With 230 exhibitors and 25+ hours of presentations, the Caffè Culture Show features the latest trends, brand new products, expert advice and more to help you ensure your customers receive the best quality coffee on offer.

Show Partners:

IT’S THE CAFFÈ CULTURE SHOW If you’re passionate about coffee – and the business of coffee – you’ll find no better place to meet the best in the business than the Caffè Culture Show. Taking place on 10-11 May 2016 at London’s Olympia, you’ll meet awardwinning artisan roasters, baristas, food and drink producers and world-leading machine and equipment manufacturers. You’ll be able to network with suppliers, expert industry advisers and 5,000 like-minded visitors at what is the UK’s only national event for the café industry.

Following its runaway success at the 2015 show, the hugely popular Independent Coffee Roasters’ Village is back at the Caffè Culture Show 2016. Returning on a much bigger scale, the village champions independent home-grown roasters from across the UK. Here you’ll see some of the best roasters in the country demonstrating the fruits of their roasting talent and serving delicious coffee throughout the show. For operators looking to improve their coffee offer, there is simply no other place like the Caffè Culture Show. Over 220 suppliers are on hand to discuss and demonstrate the very latest coffee, food, drink and equipment innovations, and you’ll find everything you need under one roof. If it’s advice you’re after, our expert-packed Seminar Theatres will be exploring every aspect of running a coffee business, for whatever stage of the journey your café is at.

EAT. DRINK. SLEEP February 2016

Also back for Caffè Culture 2016 is the fantastic Artisan Food Market. Recognising that many independent café operators want to support small, local food and drink producers, this vibrant feature of the show is a celebration of craft enterprise laid out in a farmers’ market style. From baked goods to craft beers, healthy snacks to indulgent treats, visitors will enjoy an array of scrumptious samples as they meet the award-winning independent producers behind them. As always, the show will be overflowing with coffee industry talent. Top baristas from across the UK will be showing off their specialist coffee skills, leading figures from the independent coffee shop and café sector will be sharing the secrets of success, and the best suppliers in the business will be recognised in the much-respected Caffè Culture Show Exhibitor Awards. The awards are a hard-fought contest and have proved to be a launch pad for success for many exhibitors at previous year’s shows.

To keep things fresh, the organisers of Caffè Culture 2016 are delighted to announce an exciting range of new show features too. The popular Business Theatre programme is expanding into two theatres this year, each providing tailored and relevant seminars, advice sessions and workshops for coffee businesses at different stages of their growth. A new masterclass programme will offer interactive demonstrations on how to create signature drinks as well as blind tasting sessions. There will also be a new cupping area for visitors to hone their coffee-tasting skills. Research by the Caffè Culture Show in 2015 revealed that nearly six in ten (59.2%) owners of independent coffee shops and cafés saw business performance improve in recent years. A large majority (92%) felt confident and optimistic about their business in 2015 with expectations of turnover growth (80%). Taking the temperature of the

sector again this year, the show’s Cafeconomy study will explore how operators are feeling about the state of the market a year down the line. Caffè Culture Show Event Director Cheryl Carroll says: “In 2015, we celebrated Caffè Culture’s tenth anniversary with a bigger show, new halls and a fresh new look and feel that put coffee right at the heart of things. We achieved our vision of giving the show renewed energy and were thrilled with the positive reaction we got from visitors and exhibitors alike. The 2016 show is set to be even better and we can’t wait to announce more details about the show’s exciting new features in coming months.” The Caffè Culture Show 2016 takes place at London’s Olympia on 10-11 May 2016. Free ticket registration opens in January.

The Counter Vauxhaul Arches The Counter Vauxhall Arches serves French and American-inspired contemporary food and drinks from breakfast through lunch and dinner to Vauxhall’s vibrant community of residents, commuters, tourists, professionals and hedonists. Providing freshly made dishes priced from £12-22 for main courses, their kitchen team is passionate about the provenance of food. The wine list is comprised exclusively of French and American wines, and a full bar, serving classic and unique cocktails and mocktails as well as craft beers, cater both to diners and those looking for top-notch drinks before hitting Vauxhall’s nightlife. An allday coffee bar, featuring local London roaster Allpress Espresso, will also be available for takeaway and dine-in.

Counter Owner Philip Reicherstorfer

The Vauxhall restaurant which is really well located in the heart of Vauxhall, just a stone’s throw away from the all public transport locations. I was pleasantly surprised & extremely happy to be greeted by the owner himself, the lovely Philip Reicherstorfer. The Counter is a fabulous place with a sophisticated touch both in terms of ambiance and design but also the cooking. At the same time the experience is very informal and the service was absolute fantastic - prompt and professional, the staff are incredibly friendly, all of which made us very welcome and provided a good service, considering how busy it was the crew did an excellent job. Food wise, the menu is pretty eclectic and hence offers an opportunity for a quick bite on the go or a full proper 3 course dinner. A great place to catch up

with friends whilst in the city or a meal before hitting Vauxhalls vibrant nightlife, as was the case for myself & my guest the beautiful Hannah The restaurant has very funky decor, and tables are lined up as booths along the two long walls, meaning there is good privacy. There’s a touch of grandeur about the space, with a long shimmering bar skirting much of the elongated (it’s 60m long) space, while its railway arch setting makes the desirable industrial look an easy one to achieve. Bright bar-hugging lights and elaborate modern chandelier-style fittings ensure there’s a fair bit of Vauxhall kitsch amongst the Soho cool. Entertainment was fabulous with the hilarious & world famous Lady Diamond, keeping permanent smiles on all diners’ faces. I am very much looking forward to returning for the long list of various entertainment I had the pleasure of sitting with Philip for 20 minutes talking about the birth & design of my now favourite place to eat in South London. Philip has a vast knowledge of the restaurant & food industry, the Counter being proof that hard work & dedication pays off with plans of expansion throughout London. I would recommend the family friendly place to my large group of friends & family from the socialites to my gym buddies. All in all utterly wonderful. www.counterrestaurants.com

Spicing Up Restaurant Growth with Aloha London based Dishoom, with café sites across London, in Shoreditch, Kings Cross, Covent Garden and newly opened in Carnaby Street, draws upon the heritage and tradition of old cafés with all-day menus paying homage to the food of Bombay. In its growth, Dishoom has been careful not to lose its essence, which has taken intensive management control and focused mobility. It is here where NFS’ Aloha POS technology, as a reliable and fully integrated restaurant management solution, has proven invaluable.

HOW TECHNOLOGY IS SHAPING HIGH GROWTH RESTAURANT BUSINESSES “Remember: no matter how good your feedback is, you always start over with the next customer.” Shep Hyken, customer service expert, keynote speaker and bestselling author. Real-time understanding of customer behaviour and adapting business to suit their needs is the basis of any successful organisation. In hospitality, whether running a bar, restaurant or managing a corporate event, this is critical to growth, to ensure a great customer experience. Here, Luis de Souza, CEO of NFS Technology Group looks at three hospitality operators enjoying rapid growth that have used latest EPOS technology to deliver a great customer experience. NFS Supports BrewDog Growth Plans BrewDog uses NFS’ specialist Aloha POS software and newest web portal offering to enable a smooth running service at all its bars, with a unique ability to add on future locations in line with rapid global expansion plans.

Scottish craft brewer BrewDog, founded in 2007 by co-founders James Watt and Martin Dickie, is currently the UK’s fastest growing alternative beer brand, with its Punk India Pale Ale being Britain’s top selling craft beer.

Brian Trollip, Operations Director at Dishoom said: “Through our continued growth, we rely on NFS’ Aloha system to look after all of our POS requirements, and help us to deliver a seamless and efficient service to our guests.” The NFS solution Dishoom is using encompasses all aspects of the Aloha technology, from tableside ordering through to payments with full integration to guest management and kitchen technology.

Says Jamie Barber, Founding Partner at Cabana: “As a growing restaurant operator, we were keen to find a technology solution that was scaleable and could deliver valuable real time information. For me, being able to see in real time sales and related information is invaluable, particularly for new sites where sales growth is an importance indicator of success. “The NFS Pulse Solution delivers this real time information directly to me direct to my smart phone, wherever I am at the time, and going forward, we see it as a platform to build a better and more dynamic restaurant reporting solution for Cabana. We have also deployed a great mobile solution from NFS, the Orderman Solution, which has proven far more reliable because it uses the RF frequency, which does not interfere with customers’ own WiFi applications.” Luis de Souza concluded: “We now live in a world where the immediacy of information and communication is a key driver for business success, for both smaller independent business operators and multisite chains. “We are very excited to be working with many of the leading UK restaurant operators. What is EPoS? What EPoS is will depend on who you talk to. EPoS (Electroinc Point of Sale) was the next level of progression from ECR’s (Electronic Cash Registers). Lots of clients within a range of industries still use their EPoS till system in the same way as they would an ECR but most EPoS systems can do so much more. Depending on the supplier of software and the level clients want to take loading their stock and products in to the system it can become a very powerful business tool. EPoS systems with the hospitality market can deal with on-line orders, deal with multiple methods of payment, process orders from a range of input methods and deliver business owners detailed reports and business critical information at the touch of a button.

EPoS SYSTEMS for Hospitality Pubs, Restaurants & Hotels Emperium EPoS sells a world class, industry specific software across 21 different countries, and by working with other industry partners and its subsidiary EPoS Direct it can supply a range of hardware solutions to support the varied demands of its clients. Emperium Software recognise that different business’s need different solutions. From its internal software dashboard it can tailor the functions of the software to meet the needs of its client and adapt as the clients business

model evolves and develops over time. The Hospitality software has evolved and moved forward with the industry and allows for a customers business to change and develop. Many pubs now offer a food or tab service, rather than just drinks served over the bar. For this reason they need to be able to track table orders, merge tables, and change table plans to accommodate different client events. The Emperium Epos software can deal with this. Tracking staff working hours is important as well. Traditionally this has been done with clocking in machines, this can all be done through touch screen tills, either by log in codes and passwords or ‘biometric scanning’ (finger print recognition). Restaurants may offer a table service so will need functionality to support this like the pubs, but many are now offering a take away service as well. By altering the configuration of the software setup the software can be programmed to give the very different requirements of the service through the same terminal. Hotels, particularly large hotels need additional functionality, and although Emperium Software is used in a number of smaller hotels, the demands of larger hotels are not catered for at its current level of development. This may change in the future. Emperium pride its self on providing and solid solution for its core business, which is restaurants, pubs, take away food establishments and businesses who have any combination of those three.

The Future of EPoS For Emperium EPoS, development is an ever evolving task. Over our 16 year history new functions are always being included. For the take away industry our route planning and mapping for deliveries was seen as cutting edge 1 year ago. Looking to the future integration with other systems; multi-channel systems are moving fast with clients and consumers wanting enhanced shopping facilities, so orders can be tracked through websites, text messaging and email. Payment systems are changing with new forms of payment systems coming through. Emperium programmers will remain at the fore front of development and continue to work with its client to ensure what we are developing is in-line with the industries requirements and customer’s needs. As a software company that works only with Windows as an operating system, we will continue to work on this platform so that the operating system is stable and supported ensuring the EPoS is reliable and will be as integrated and compatible with other systems that business’s use on a day to day basis, this is not just the Microsoft Office Suite, but Sage & SAP.

Indulge – without the worry of over indulging – with The Virgin Vera at The Arch London, one of London’s finest contemporary boutique hotels. The Virgin Vera (£7) is made from muddled Fresh Lime and Raspberries, Aloe Vera Water and Guava Juice served over crushed ice. The mineral-rich juice is tipped to be the new must-have health drink, due to astonishing benefits, which include lowering cholesterol, aiding weight loss, combating bloating and indigestion, strengthening the immune system, and even easing general discomfort.

Gnome’s Juice, Studio Bar at K West www.k-west.co.uk Head to west London to try Studio Bar’s mythical mocktail; a curious concoction of muddled strawberries, cranberry juice and mellow strawberry puree. Gnome’s Juice (£7) is a delectable way to avoid the evil spirits that conjure up horrific hangovers the next day! Formerly the BBC Building Kensington House in the 60s, an endless list of Rock ‘N’ Roll royalty has stayed, played and misbehaved at K West Hotel & Spa – Bob Marley and the Wailers, Bowie, The Kinks and Roxy Music to name a few. On the ground floor by the entrance, The Studio Bar has a moody, music-infused atmosphere, perfect for socialising and chilling out.

Dry January encourages drinkers to give up alcohol for a month for a healthy start to the new year whilst raising money for charity. 54
