Excitement is growing at the Grand at Grasmere as refurbishment begins on the Lake District country house hotel’s plans for the launch of Cafe Grand At Grasmere. Starting on 23rd November, the development will transform the ground floor into a chic and luxurious environment. This will feature the new WOW Cafe Grand with open kitchen, stylish bar and sumptuous lounging areas. According to the Grand at Grasmere website, the refurbishment will bring “a brand new open kitchen & bar along with all new furniture, restaurant & lounge layout & greeting area. The refurbishment of the bedrooms at the Grand at Grasmere is an ongoing process. Every room in the hotel features new super comfy Sealy bed, fresh cotton linen, towels & robes. So far, seven rooms have been completed, making up the ‘Superior’ category and those still to be done are categorised as ‘Standard’.

A new hotel in Kent will be built on the Salomons Estate, despite considerable concern from neighbours’ about noise pollution, including gunfire and explosions. The 56-bedroom property, which will include a bar and a restaurant, will be surrounded by a walled garden and replace two existing accommodation blocks built in the 1970s – adding an additional nine bedrooms. At the planning meeting earlier this month, the proposal was given the green light despite complaints

from local residents who said the development would increase noise pollution in the valley, which is both Green Belt and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, from weddings and ‘hostile environment training that goes on at the estate, according to reports in the Kent Courier. But Southborough Town Council submitted a response supporting the application in the hope it would boost tourism in the area, and it’s expected that two full-time jobs would be created.

The Hotel Collection sells Scottish hotel in £7m deal One of Scotland’s most iconic hotels has been sold in a multi-million pound deal that sees The Hotel Collection hand over the reins to ambitious new owners. The Marine Hotel is located on the edge of the 18th hold of the Royal Troon Golf Course, which will host next year’s Open Golf Championship, and has been purchased in a joint venture between Cannock Investments and Hetherley Capital Partners. The four-star 89-bedroom hotel was sold in a deal brokered by Julian Troup, head of UK hotels agency and Alistair Letham, hotels director of Colliers International on behalf of The Hotel Collection with a £7m guide price. Julian Troup, head of UK hotels agency

at Colliers International, said: “It has been a privilege to act on the sale of such a world-renowned property. As we expected, it attracted a huge amount of interest from both UK and international buyers when it hit the market. Its iconic position overlooking the 18th hole of Royal Troon Golf Course makes it truly unique and I’ve no doubt the new owners will have ambitious plans for The Marine.” Speaking on behalf of the partnership, Charles Scudamore, principal of Hetherley Capital Partners, added: “We recognise the hotel needs investment to restore its former glory and we are committed to conducting those works as sympathetically as possible. 2016 is obviously a big year for the hotel and for the town of Troon itself and we look forward to playing our part.”

JD Wetherspoon has been targeted by hackers who have stolen personal details of up to 657,000 customers, with some credit and debit card details stolen. Fortunately the cyber-attack only gained the last four digits of 100 customers’ bank cards who purchased Wetherspoon vouchers online before August 2014.

Excitement is mounting ahead of the UK final of the BACARDÍ Legacy Cocktail Competition. Eight finalists from bars across the country will be competing in front of a crowd of industry faces to be named one of the ‘Three Most Promising’ bartenders in the seventh edition of the competition.

One of the most rigorous and prestigious bartender challenges in the world, the BACARDÍ Legacy Cocktail Competition challenges bartenders to create a Legacy cocktail recipe that can stand the test of time and become a modern classic, alongside recipes such as the Mojito and the Cuba Libre.

Bacardi Legacy FinalistsThe 2015 finalists are:

This year the contenders range from The Knot, a mix of BACARDÍ Carta Blanca, mandarin juice, lemon juice, honey syrup, Angostura bitters and Martini Bitter Aperitivo by Nguyen, to Martin’s El Coco, again using Carta Blanca, with coconut water, fino sherry, lemon juice, crème de peche and orgeat syrup.

• Robb Collins, London Cocktail Club Goodge Street, London • Andrew Dickey, The Merchant Hotel, Belfast • Iain Griffiths, Dandelyan, London • Madeline Martin, Flipside Cocktail Club, Bristol • Santiago Michelis, Happiness Forgets, London • Peter Nguyen, China Tang at The Dorchester, London • Oliver Pluck, The East Village, Leeds • Ryan Snedden, Tonic, Edinburgh The eight were selected from a series of regional heats in September, judged by a panel of respected industry experts, including BACARDÍ brand ambassador, Metinee (May) Kongsrivilai. The group then had the chance to hone their mixology skills and refine their Legacy cocktail recipes at a special workshop in October, where they were also given advice on marketing.

The eight bartenders will showcase their Legacy recipes to an expert panel in the final. But that’s only the start of the journey, as the ‘Three Most Promising’ will receive a budget from BACARDÍ to execute their own marketing campaign until March next year to generate support for their Legacy cocktail. The bartender with the most successful campaign will be announced on 15 March 2016. He or she will then go on to compete in the global final on 23 April 2016 in San Francisco, pitting their skills against some of the best bar talent on the planet. Up for grabs is a once-in-a-lifetime trip around the world.

No passwords were stolen, so there has been no financial burden for customers and staff affected, but names, dates of birth, email addresses and mobile phone numbers are at risk. In a letter to customers, Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “We recommend that you remain vigilant for any emails that you are not expecting, that specifically ask you for personal or financial information, or request you to click on links or download information. “We also recommend that if you are contacted by anyone asking you for personal data or passwords, such as for your bank account details, you should take all steps to check the true identity of the organisation.” Vital bank details such as expiry date were not nicked by hackers, so accounts can’t be accessed. Some personal staff details, registered before 10 November 2011, were stolen, but no salary, bank, tax or national insurance information was accessed. Hutson added: “We apologise wholeheartedly to customers and staff who have been affected. “Unfortunately, hacking is becoming more and more sophisticated and widespread. We are determined to respond to this by increasing our efforts and investment in security and will be doing everything possible to prevent a recurrence.” The pubco has assured users that data was stolen from their old website, which has been replaced. JDW say the new website is not at risk, and is managed by a new digital partner, which has no connection to the website which suffered the breach.

The restaurant, which opened in Old Compton Street in February, opened permanently this week (2 December) following a refurbishment of the site, previously Made in Italy.

London restaurants serving British-style cuisine, including Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and Fera at Claridge’s, have topped OpenTable’s 100 best UK restaurants list for 2015. Over a quarter (26) of the list from the online booking service features sites serving British-style food – with European (18) and French (13) making up the rest – while all 10 of the top spots are taken up by London venues. The Ledbury, head chef Brett Graham’s site in Notting Hill, scooped the overall top spot, while the other restaurants in the top 10 included Restaurant Story, the Typing Room, Clos Maggiore, the Greenhouse, the French Table and the Savoy’s afternoon tea. Vegetarian featured only once with Brighton’s Food for Friends. Other restaurants in the top 100 included names such as Benares, Berners Tavern, Hakkasan Mayfair, Alyn Williams at the Westbury, City Social and Social Eating House, Chez Bruce, Galvin at Windows, Galvin La Chappelle, Koffmann’s, Roux at the Landau. There were also a host of sites outside the capital, including 21 and Blackfriars restaurant in Newcastle, the Hinds Head gastropub in Bray, Anderson’s Bar & Grill in Birmingham, Hawksmoor in Manchester, Kendell’s Bistro in Leeds, L’Ortolan in Shinfield, the Ambrette sites at Canterbury and Margate, the Inn at Welland in Malvern, and the Gardener’s Cottage in Edinburgh. The overall list is generated from more than 480,000 reviews from OpenTable diners in the past year, and all restaurants with a minimum qualifying number of reviews were considered. Criteria were considered according to the restaurants’ relative ratings compared with others in the same area, and the average number of reviews received.

As well as a refreshed look, which includes the addition of a 12 seat counter and 16-seat sharing table, Shonhan and head chef Ben Hughes have created a new menu featuring Japanese yōshoku cuisine and drinking food served in Japan’s izakayas. New small dishes include Mylor shrimps with curry salt, USDA beef tartar and imo fries with shisho mayo while larger sharing plates have been added, such as grilled partridge with chilli ponzu, wild Cornish seabass with orange miso and lamb neck fillet with

kimchee tare. A selection of Shackfuyu’s signature dishes have been retained including dessert kinako French toast with soft serve, reportedly one of London’s most instagrammed dishes of the year. The site also serves a selection of gua bao buns for £5 at lunchtime with fillings including fried chicken with kimchee and grilled salmon with orange miso. Coinciding with Shackfuyu’s permanence in Soho, Shonhan is also planning to run a Bone Daddies ramen bar at Bone Daddies Bermondsey. The restaurant had hosted a Shackfuyu residency which will now be replaced with the ramen bar every Saturday from 12pm-10pm. Bone Daddies currently operates four sites across London with a fifth expected to open in Old Street later this year.

As a tourist, at the top of your list of places to visit in the City of Antalya is the the historical old town known as Kaleiçi with its award winning yacht harbor.

City of Antalya

EAT. DRINK. SLEEP

Venue Profile:City of Antalya

Antalya Kaleiçi is located in the heart of the City and was once home to many conquering civilisations. Founded in the second century BC the King of Pergamon ( Attalos II) was searching for paradise on earth. On his travels, he found a unique location on the Mediterranean coast, miles of golden, sandy beaches at Konyaaltı and Lara, bright sparkling waterfalls, pine forests, exotic flowers, the magnificent backdrop of the purple Taurus Mountains and of course, beautiful weather for almost 300 days of the year. Antalya has also been conquered by the Greeks, Byzantines, Selçuk and Ottoman Turks. Many notable historical figures such as Alexander the Great and Hadrian have also passed through Antalya at one time or another. For many centuries, four cultures (Turks, Greeks, Jews and Christians) co-existed together side by side in harmony. Today, Kaleiçi is visited by nearly every tourist who comes to Antalya. There are countless hidden gems in Kaleiçi and the simplest way we can describe Kaleiçi to first time visitors to Antalya is like this; Kaleiçi nestles in the cliffs that winds along the Antalya coastline from Konyaaltı to Lara flanked either side by two parks, Ataturk and Karaalioğlu park. The views from both parks in every direction are truly sublime, stunning and breathtaking. The ancient Roman walls majestically traces around the outskirts of Kaleiçi sloping gently down to and along the natural harbor. Within the walls, there are hundreds of narrow, winding cobbled streets lined with nearly three thousand Ottoman houses and the inspirations have been derived from Helenistic, Roman and Byzantine architecture. These once derelict grand Ottoman houses have been painstakingly restored back to their original features and character with protruding balconies, arched windows, ornately hand carved wood doors and decorative motifs and Islamic calligraphy. Today, many of the Ottoman houses have been tastefully transformed into shops (selling an abundace of ‘original designer reproductions’ as well as quality gifts, souvenirs, spices and local handicraft), bars, restaurants, nightclubs, boutique hotels, museums, antique shops, art galleries, patisseries, coffee shops and so much more.

18

The streets are vibrantly adorned with bougonvillea flowers and the enchanting fragrance from the Jasmine flowers further embodies the quintessential charm of Kaleiçi.

Wherever you may be in Kaleiçi, the views of the breathtaking Taurus mountains, cliffs, the golden expanse of Konyaaltı beach and the turquoise and blue waters of the Mediteranean are truly awe-inspiring. Unlike other popular tourist resorts along the Mediteranean and Aegean coastline (distinctive Greek architectural influence), walking around Kaleiçi gives you the sensation you are embracing the legacies left by the Seljuks and Ottoman empires. In the evenings, Antalya Kaleiçi takes on another mesmerising facade as the sun sets beyond the Taurus Mountains creating a magical siluohette as daylight merges into night. The historical landmarks such as Hadrians gate, Roman clocktower, Hirdirlik tower, broken mineret(Byzantine cathederal and mosque) the imposing Roman towers that once gaurded the City, Tekeli Mehmet Mosque, The Yılvı Minaret are all alluminated as they stand majestically as prime advocates of Kaleiçi’s formidable past. The ‘İki Kapılı Han’(covered bazaar), once a centre of trade for aromatic spicies, fruits, vegtables and vibrant silks in the 14th century has been painstakingly restored and trading of the modern kind takes place until midnight (during the summer). The main square known as Cumhüriyet Square plays host most evenings to the dancing fountains accompanied to classical, contemporary music and a visual lazer show which is not to be missed. The mouthwatering aromas of kebabs from Kebab street waft through the air drawing you closer to a delicous döner feast. Guests kindly note, in particular those with mobility issues. Next to the Roman Cloctower take the road on the right and enjoy strolling through the vibrant winding streets whichs leads along the base of the Yılvı minaret(fluted minaret), underneath the natural arch. After the historic arch, look to your left hand side and you will see the newly constructed lift that automatically brings you to Cumhüriyet Maydan(Republic Square). After the lifts turn left and walk down the slight gradient and welcome to the pictureresque and enchanting Antalya yacht harbor.

Antalya Aquarium As a tourist the Antalya Aquarium opened in the summer of 2013 and is considered to be one of the largest aquariums in the world. The Antalya Aquarium inspires, entertains and educates. It’s home to thousands of species, and tens of thousands of underwater creatures! The decoration of the aquarium’s main tank was created by the famous Italian sculptor Benedetti. It incorporates life-sized plane, ship, and submarine wrecks, and is the biggest coral reef decoration in the world. Travel along a path of over 40 exhibits, followed by the world’s largest underwater tunnel aquarium that’s 131 meters long and a width of 3 meters. A visit to the aquarium is a terrific way to spend a day out with numerous activities such as, making snow balls from real snow in Snow World. Step into a journey among the most poisonous, colorful and interesting species of the world in tropical reptile house; Fear Trophy. You can sail the world seas with multi-dimensional movie technology in Oceanride XD Cinema.

Aspendos Antalya Situated in close proximity to the traditional, local town of Serik in Antalya province, Aspendos impresses its visitors with its elegant amphitheatre and other ancient remains. Because of its location close to the trade routes and the Köpruçay River, Aspendos has always been a rich town many rulers desired to dominate.

The amphitheater in Aspendos is the oldest and best preserved Roman amphitheater in Anatolia. The aqueducts in Aspendos are also very impressive signifying the advanced engineering of its time. As a tourist, a must is to walk around the back of Aspendos amphitheater to the Basilica at the top.

Düden Waterfalls Antalya As a tourist, the Duden Waterfalls in Antalya make a pleasant trip from the Liberty Hotels Lara and its surrounding gardens are a popular picnic spot with locals. The Duden river extends from the Taurus mountains all the way to the Mediterranean and creates two cascades know as the Upper and Lower Duden Waterfalls. Upper or inner Duden waterfall(Inland); 15m (49ft) in height and 20m (65ft) wide and once set in a pleasant rural landscape. Today, the rapid expansion of Antalya City has meant the upper or iner Düden waterfalls have almost been engulfed by high rise developments. A natural cave has formed behind the falls and it is possible to sit here and watch the cascades. There are restaurants, boardwalks and picnic tables in the gardens immediately surrounding the falls to help you make the most of this scenic spot.

Club La Costa World Helps Military Heroes Adjust To Life After Combat Club La Costa World, a leading resort property developer and operator of holiday and leisure products around the world, has partnered with Give Us Time, a charity that helps military families adjust to life after combat, to provide a break away for soldiers in need of quality time with their loved ones. From the 10th to the 17th October, the Club La Costa Kusadasi Golf and Spa Resort in Turkey became home to 46 military personnel, mostly from the Gurkha and the Woolwich Barracks regiments, and their families. The event was arranged in partnership with Give Us Time, which was launched in 2012 by Dr Liam Fox MP and aims to assist military personnel in need of rest, rehabilitation and reconnection with their families. Nine families affected by the earthquake in Nepal earlier in the year, were chosen from The Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment based in Aldershot. Six soldiers and their families from the Woolwich Barracks where Lee Rigby served were also nominated by their welfare officer as being in need of a holiday following deployment.

22

Karen Hay, Chief Executive for Give Us Time, says: “Give Us Time was delighted to take these brave men and women out to Turkey for a muchdeserved holiday. After long periods of separation away from loved ones, what better way to reconnect than to spend a week together on holiday? It was a real Turkish Delight.” Club La Costa World, has been a supporter of Give Us Time since the initiative was launched three years ago. Originally offering 20 holidays, it is now one of the charity’s biggest donators, providing 40 holidays at their resorts around the world in 2015. The Club La Costa Kusadasi Gold and Spa Resort is located in the beach resort town on Turkey’s western Aegean coast, set on the hillside with views of the national parkland and the Aegean sea. Club La Costa organised for 15 apartments at the resort to be made available, as well as ensuring the families were greeted with snacks and child-friendly cocktails upon arrival.

Commenting on the event, Resort Senior Operations Manager Ozgur Guzel said: “It has been our pleasure to make sure that all the families had a wonderful week and we hope that the mums, dads and youngsters have had a memorable time. When the last day came it was sad to say goodbye - it was an honour to serve them, and a privilege to be part of this charity project.” Captain Tamang, Welfare Officer for The 10th Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment adds: “My group arrived home with happy, smiling faces. They truly appreciated the holiday and the positive effect it has had on their families. Without the generosity and hard work of Give Us Time and Club La Costa, my team wouldn’t have been able to have such a great week away.” Give Us Time is hoping to increase its number of partners in the hospitality sector this year. GET READY FOR THE UK’S BIGGEST CAFFEINE BUZZ OF 2016

IT’S THE CAFFÈ CULTURE SHOW If you’re passionate about coffee – and the business of coffee – you’ll find no better place to meet the best in the business than the Caffè Culture Show. Taking place on 10-11 May 2016 at London’s Olympia, you’ll meet awardwinning artisan roasters, baristas, food and drink producers and world-leading machine and equipment manufacturers. You’ll be able to network with suppliers, expert industry advisers and 5,000 like-minded visitors at what is the UK’s only national event for the café industry.

Following its runaway success at the 2015 show, the hugely popular Independent Coffee Roasters’ Village is back at the Caffè Culture Show 2016. Returning on a much bigger scale, the village champions independent home-grown roasters from across the UK. Here you’ll see some of the best roasters in the country demonstrating the fruits of their roasting talent and serving delicious coffee throughout the show. For operators looking to improve their coffee offer, there is simply no other place like the Caffè Culture Show. Over 220 suppliers are on hand to discuss and demonstrate the very latest coffee, food, drink and equipment innovations, and you’ll find everything you need under one roof. If it’s advice you’re after, our expert-packed Seminar Theatres will be exploring every aspect of running a coffee business, for whatever stage of the journey your café is at.

Also back for Caffè Culture 2016 is the fantastic Artisan Food Market. Recognising that many independent café operators want to support small, local food and drink producers, this vibrant feature of the show is a celebration of craft enterprise laid out in a farmers’ market style. From baked goods to craft beers, healthy snacks to indulgent treats, visitors will enjoy an array of scrumptious samples as they meet the award-winning independent producers behind them. As always, the show will be overflowing with coffee industry talent. Top baristas from across the UK will be showing off their specialist coffee skills, leading figures from the independent coffee shop and café sector will be sharing the secrets of success, and the best suppliers in the business will be recognised in the much-respected Caffè Culture Show Exhibitor Awards. The awards are a hard-fought contest and have proved to be a launch pad for success for many exhibitors at previous year’s shows.

26

To keep things fresh, the organisers of Caffè Culture 2016 are delighted to announce an exciting range of new show features too. The popular Business Theatre programme is expanding into two theatres this year, each providing tailored and relevant seminars, advice sessions and workshops for coffee businesses at different stages of their growth. A new masterclass programme will offer interactive demonstrations on how to create signature drinks as well as blind tasting sessions. There will also be a new cupping area for visitors to hone their coffee-tasting skills. Research by the Caffè Culture Show in 2015 revealed that nearly six in ten (59.2%) owners of independent coffee shops and cafés saw business performance improve in recent years. A large majority (92%) felt confident and optimistic about their business in 2015 with expectations of turnover growth (80%). Taking the temperature of the

sector again this year, the show’s Cafeconomy study will explore how operators are feeling about the state of the market a year down the line. Caffè Culture Show Event Director Cheryl Carroll says: “In 2015, we celebrated Caffè Culture’s tenth anniversary with a bigger show, new halls and a fresh new look and feel that put coffee right at the heart of things. We achieved our vision of giving the show renewed energy and were thrilled with the positive reaction we got from visitors and exhibitors alike. The 2016 show is set to be even better and we can’t wait to announce more details about the show’s exciting new features in coming months.” The Caffè Culture Show 2016 takes place at London’s Olympia on 10-11 May 2016. Free ticket registration opens in January.

The Polka Dots with the Tipsy Tart brand charity banner

Stacks Of Fun - Bar None -

From The Tipsy Tart! Inspired by a heartfelt wish, Elizabeth Grinker founded Tipsy Tart in 2013. Tipsy Tart is a family run business which produces ‘luscious’ liqueurs, funky drinks merchandise and a small range of beauty products (which feature in the Tipsy Tart Pamper Hampers). The imaginative and quirky brand, again the brainchild of Elizabeth, is proving to be as highly desirable as the products themselves – increasingly seen as a ‘must have’ purchase which can bring fun and originality to any social occasion. The range of infused drinks available are VODKAS - Caramel (Award Winning), Rose and Raspberry and White Peach and GINS - Lavender, Blackberry and Blood Orange. The awards were given at the 2014 Heart of England Fine Foods show in the Best Alcoholic Beverage category. As well as enjoyed on their own, the infused vodkas and gins contribute wonderfully to cocktails - a good range of cocktail suggestions are provided on the ‘Mixology’ page of the web site, which bar owners and their staff can delve into in producing highly original cocktails for customers.

Billy and the Chicks

London Fried Chicken is coming to Soho this December This December, a new London fried chicken restaurant, Billy and the Chicks, will open in Soho. Headed up by talented young chef Billy Stock, previously at St John and Salt Yard, Billy and the Chicks will serve a unique London fried chicken offering, inspired by Billy’s memories of growing up in South London. The restaurant will use the finest British ingredients with excellent provenance credentials from suppliers including Bread Ahead, Neal’s Yard Dairy, Walter Rose & Son and Spice Mountain for the signature secret herbs and spice mix. The chicken used will be free range Cotswold Whites, nicknamed ‘The Ballerina’ due to the way they dance around the fields. Billy and The Chicks will use innovative deep-frying technology, the ‘Henny Penny’ pressure cooker which leads to less oily and more flavourful food. Billy and the Chicks will offer a unique London take on fried chicken, inspired by memories of chicken shops across the city which is quite unlike American offerings. The chicken will be simple, delicious and offer the best chicken burger in the capital. While the chicken will be simple, the sides, extras, and specials such as a three cheese fondue based Mac ‘n’

42

Cheese, Jamon Iberico bone stock beans and Maris Piper chips will showcase Billy’s skills, learnt from some of London’s top chefs. The drinks menu will feature local, independent suppliers such as Workshop Coffee, Ale and Stout from Four Pure Brewing Co based in Bermondsey, a Lager and IPA provided by Harbour Brewing as well as classic Red Stripe. The bar will also serve cocktails inspired by childhood favourite fizzy drinks from £7, and a selection of childhood favourite soft drinks, served in the can. At Billy and the Chicks, the music will be as important as the food. With a dedicated DJ booth and eclectic playlists, the restaurant will encourage customers to linger and enjoy themselves with likeminded staff. It’s a place that will aim to be a Soho community, bringing together

people with a passion for great food, great music and good times without pretension. As Billy Stock explains “We’re very excited to be launching Billy and The Chicks in Soho. Fried chicken is my nostalgic meal and for many others born around the late 80’s and early 90’s, which is why we wanted to open an authentically London fried chicken shop. We are keeping it close to our hearts of when we were kids, in a place that’s close to our hearts as adults. It’s a place we’ve both lived, worked, drunk and ate, a place where we’ve made many memories. Hopefully, here, we’ll make many more.”

Sports menus (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are served buffet style at the main Clubhouse restaurant. Pre-match meals and post-match snacks can be provided and specific dietary requests can be accommodated if requested in advance. A typical sample sports dinner menu comprises of: • •

Pumpkin soup with freshly baked bread rolls, Smoked salmon, Greek salad, Mixed salad Grilled sirloin steaks, Fillets of cod, Linguine, Sautéed potatoes, braised cabbage, Carrots & courgettes Basmati rice, Parsley sauce, tomato sauce, pesto, cocktail sauce, grated cheese, vinaigrette & yoghurt dressing Fresh fruit platter, Selection of yoghurts, Apple pie

Visitors to Amendoeira also come here for the Algarve sunshine and are taken by the resort’s location, facilities and level of service that they receive when purchasing second homes within the resort. The residential complex comprises spacious two bedroom apartments, two bedroom apartments with mezzanine and luxurious three, four and five bedroom villas. The influence of Moorish architecture with cool, tiled courtyards, graceful arches and secluded terraces is allied to a comprehensive range of modern amenities, including quality finishes, fully fitted kitchen, air conditioning, under floor heating, electric shutters on the windows and a security system. Plus there is underground parking with lift access from the basement to each floor. The apartment villages are surrounded by luxuriant landscaped gardens each served by a communal pool, while villas boast generous sized plots, lush landscaping and a private swimming pool. The majority of all properties enjoy fabulous views over the golf courses. Owners can make use of the two championship golf courses, as well as the Amendoeira Sports Club and club house with restaurant, bar and golf shop. Price for a two bedroom apartment of 108 sqm with 23 sqm of terraces start from €250,100 whilst a four bedroom villa of 432sqm with 265sqm of terraces starts at €1,267,500. Guests and home owners alike can use Amendoeira Resort as a base to explore one of Europe’s most delightful locations, the Algarve region of

Portugal that is blessed by a superb climate, a spectacular coastline with miles of sandy beaches, intimate coves and rocky headlands. The district of Silves in which Amendoeira is based is a town steeped in history, as it was the capital of the Algarve during Moorish times and became a prosperous town, rivalling Lisbon as a centre of culture. The resort is also in close proximity to Armação de Pêra beach, a popular town with many bars, restaurants and other amenities. Whilst in the Algarve you will be treated to some of the finest seafood in Europe – be certain to make space for a traditional seafood platter. On such a visit the continuous flow of shellfish, crab, prawns and a traditional cut of fillet steak, made an evening of eating, my ticket to revisit this wonderful area. But why not have a true taste of the Algarve and enjoy its famous cataplana. This seafood dish is also the name of the special cookware used to prepare it, which is traditionally made of copper and shaped like two clamshells hinged at one end, sealed using a clamp on either side of the assembly. Now make your own cataplana and attend a workshop such as at Tertulia Algarvia that gives you the opportunity to cook the dish under the watchful eye of the lovely hosts, before sitting down to enjoy your creation. This easy to cook speciality starts with the preparation of fresh vegetables, herbs, fish, and all types of shellfish, which then in a very particular order, steam in the cataplana over the course of approximately half an hour. A traditional Algarve wine is served to compliment the dish. The Algarve is an area now picking up international awards from around the world with wines such as João Clara leading the way. Also during my stay at Amendoeira, a trip to Quinta João Clara located in Vale de Lousas, Alcantarilha is well worth the visit to learn more about their glorious wines from the very knowledgeable owner Edite Alves. Due to its stunning accommodation, array of facilities, friendliness, and high level of service Amendoeira Golf Resort is perfectly suited for a holiday with the entire family. The resort can cater for all interests and with so many great attractions and amenities on its door step Amendoeira is the perfect spot to soak up all the Algarve has to offer.

Objects in Glass

January 2016

Objects in Glass are an Essex based bespoke glass company making a new range of products of interest to interior designers, architects and private home decorators. They have invented and patented a new concept in flat surface glass design that is totally practical for use as table or kitchen work tops, splash backs, wall panels or shower screen, etc, but which can be used to create extraordinary decorative effects.

EAT. DRINK. SLEEP

Interior Design

Using state-of-the-art glass laminating technology they are able to mould individual designs, in small or large batches, in a practically limitless variety of form and themes. Many of these are so new that they defy description because you would not have seen anything like them before. Imagine a traditional Victorian embossed relief wall paper design set into glass with a bronze metallic distressed finish. Or imagine something which appears to be a broken rock face covered with patches of molten lead. Antique or contemporary, traditional or high-tech, there is something here for anyone wanting an original but practical surface. They have hundreds of ideas to choose from and will work with clients, big or small, to create personal, one-off designs. The effects that can be achieved using the Objects in Glass patented system are amazing because the glass becomes one with the actual design and encapsulated materials - creating a 3 dimensional look which is visually much deeper than the actual material thickness. And, depending on the theme or materials used, panels can be backlit or can incorporate diffused lighting. So decorative or practical lighting solutions can also be integrated into the design. We know that glass is durable, safe and easy to clean and glass tables have been around for many years. But the popularity of glass faced working surfaces has been marred by the fact that they can scratch. ‘All surfaces can be scratched, but’, says managing director Ross Curtis, ‘by using our special techniques we can resolve this problem. This is no longer an issue’. The form is bonded onto a watertight substrate resulting in a super strong toughened glass unit which would be hard to damage even when struck with a strong hammer blow. Objects in Glass boasts an extremely wide range of designs with glass containing actual objects and effects for virtually all domestic and commercial decorative glass applications. They have an impressive portfolio of work with world famous interior designers and architects. Many of London’s recently built landmark buildings contain examples of their work but you do not have to be a large company in order to commission an item or discuss a project with them. Anything from a bar or reception desks to feature walls, balustrading and shower screens or simply a small splash back kitchen area can be discussed, planned and produced. They will also undertake fitting on site and resolve technical problems. In September the company will be exhibiting at the next Decorex exhibition to be held at Sion Park, London. If you can’t wait until then check out their web site or visit their factory showroom.

BRIGHT GOODS LED FILAMENT LAMPS HELP ACHIEVE

70% ENERGY SAVINGS FOR KITCHEN TABLE An installation of Bright Goods LED filament lamps has helped Kitchen Table achieve energy savings of over 70% at the newly opened dining ‘theatre’. Launched to wide critical acclaim, Kitchen Table wanted to deliver a unique experience to members of its dining audience who are positioned around a theatrically-themed open kitchen. Deep tan leather chairs placed strategically around a brushed aluminium bar-style table ensure that every diner has the best seat in the house. From these seats, diners are able to follow every stage of the meal preparation by Kitchen Table’s Head Chef, Michelin-starred James Knappett. It was important for James and his wife Sandia Chang, who manages the restaurant, to incorporate lighting that would enhance the overall ambience of the unique experience and they opted for the Victoria LED filament lamp from the Bright Goods range. The Victoria is the perfect choice for Kitchen Table. Its innovative blend of 21st Century efficiency and 19th Century styling creates a stunning and welcoming atmosphere within the dining ‘auditorium’. With a classical shape that harks back to a bygone era, complemented by a fully-dimmable warm glow, the Victoria has proved to be one of the most popular offerings on Kitchen Table’s menu. Alongside its classical appearance and unrivalled lighting levels, the super efficient LED Victoria has enabled Kitchen Table to achieve energy savings of over 70% compared to traditional filament lamps. In common with all lamps in the Bright Goods range, the Victoria also offers ten times the lifespan and is covered by a comprehensive two year guarantee.

52

“We are absolutely delighted with our Victoria lamps,” says Sandia. “Our customers not only appreciate our fine dining experience, they also compliment us on the welcoming atmosphere of our dining ‘theatre’. The vintage look of the lamps is massively on trend and their energy saving performance has given us a fantastic Win-Win result.” For further information, please contact: Saima Shafi LED Eco Lights Tel: 01276 691 230 Email: saima@ledecolights.com www.brightgoods.co.uk
