KITSCH IS DEFINITELY COOL IN THE HEART OF MAYFAIR If Alice had fallen down the rabbit hole in Mayfair she might have found herself in the wonderfully kitsch wonderland that is Casa di Fiori, a riotous explosion of vibrant hues and surreal surprises. Located just a stone’s throw from the iconic shopping destinations of Oxford Street and Bond Street, this is, quite simply, unlike any other Italian restaurant in London. Casa di Fiori means ‘House of Flowers’ and everywhere you look there are colours. LEADING ENTREPRENEURS LAUNCH EXCITING NEW INDIAN RESTAURANT CONCEPT

Zumbura, 36a Old Town, Clapham, London, SW4 0LB

Aamir Ahmad, Sean Galligan and David Garrett, cofounders of award-winning contemporary furniture retailer Dwell, are making their debut in the restaurant sector with the launch of Indian restaurant Zumbura.

a British invention which has been changed so much from the original that when friends come round and eat at my house, they are surprised by the depth and breadth of the dishes I serve. I wanted to be able to provide the kind of food I ate when I was growing up, but within a restaurant setting.”

Set to open in Clapham on the 6th November, this cool and sophisticated 45-cover restaurant will showcase the traditional cuisine of the Purab region of North India. Bringing something unique to the market, its menu will feature a range of unusual homestyle dishes, with a contemporary twist, that will offer even the most knowledgeable of diners a new and exciting culinary experience. In charge of the kitchen at Zumbura will be head chef Raju Rawat, who brings with him over 15 years’ experience working in both the UK and the subcontinent. Having trained at one of India’s finest five star hotels, The Oberoi in New Delhi, Raju went on to work at the Michelin starred Benares in Mayfair. Prominent roles at both the Cinnamon Club and Bombay Bicycle Club followed before he 6

helped develop popular Indian Street food brand, Moolis. Raju’s focus at Zumbura will be on delivering fresh, aromatic, healthy and light dishes that will be totally authentic but without compromising on flavour. Highlights will include Kullia (aromatic lamb and turnip stew), Shami Kebab (velvet soft lamb and lentil patties) and two dishes prized for their purification and nutritional benefits: Karela (bitter gourd here cooked with lentils) and Ghugni (black chickpeas with a tangy mango and onion dressing). The menu will feature a wide selection of small sharing plates designed to be eaten in the traditional way, with an average spend-per-head of £20-£30. Viewed as the first in a collection of restaurants the opening of Zumbura will fulfil a lifelong ambition by Ahmad to open an authentic Indian eatery. “I have always been really disappointed by Indian food in the UK. It’s not what we eat at home. What most restaurants serve is

eat Headingley prepares to host a party, for your eyes only ONE of Yorkshire’s most famous venues will be licensed to thrill this winter when it swaps sports stars for secret agents. Headingley Carnegie Stadium, home to Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos Rugby Club, is holding a glittering 007-themed evening of dinner and dancing on Saturday 14 December – and is preparing to welcome as many as 300 James Bonds. The evening is part of a jam-packed schedule of events being held in the run up to Christmas by the Headingley Experience, and will begin with Martini cocktails, followed by a sumptuous three course meal. Partygoers will then compete for the title of best dressed guest before heading to a photo booth to capture a lasting memento of the evening. The event is the last in a trio of glamorous functions being held at the stadium over three consecutive nights, each with a different theme.

On Thursday 12 December a New Yorkthemed Ladies Night will feature Cosmopolitan cocktails, a two course dinner and a disco, while, on Friday 13 December, a Bollywood Night adds spice to the schedule with lassi cocktails, an authentic Indian buffet and dancers performing traditional Indian dance routines. In addition, the Headingley Experience, which manages conferences and events at the stadium, will be serving Christmas lunches on selected dates throughout December, complete with crackers, party novelties and a disco. Alternatively, those wishing to host their own celebration can hire a number of function rooms at the stadium, where chefs can provide a range of menu choices and buffets for parties of all sizes. For further information about the Christmas schedule at Headingley, or for tickets for the Bond evening, which cost £35 each, call 0113 203 3899 or email events@headingleyexperience.com.

“Never mind a partridge in a pear tree,” said sales and marketing manager Jacqui Page. “This Christmas guests at Headingley will enjoy 7,000 crackers, 3,000 turkeys, 10,000 glasses of Champagne and 2,500 cocktails – which is enough to leave even James Bond shaken, not stirred.”

Buddha-Bar London

It was back in 1997 that Raymond Visan opened the Buddha-Bar in Paris. With its ground-breaking Pan-Asian menu, chic nightclub vibe and house music so credible it would create a best-selling record label in its wake, it soon became the venue of choice for the city’s beau monde. Since then the Buddha-Bar brand has become one of the world’s most successful, with outposts in over a dozen destinations worldwide, including Monte Carlo, Moscow and Manila. Now to this illustrious list can be added the gorgeous Buddha-Bar London in the heart of Knightsbridge.

something of a departure from previous openings. Although still featuring some of the capital’s best live DJs – and a great line in amazing cocktails – the emphasis here is very much on the food. 8

Slate tableware continues to be THE fine dining trend. Now Slateware has been launched in response to demand for a superior, differentiated product for the hospitality industry. Slateware is made from the finest Welsh slate that is 500 million years old - a pedigree that lends itself to the creation of tableware that is a feast for the eyes in itself. Slateware represents the ultimate combination of form and function - beautiful, natural aesthetics and practicality for the busiest of professional kitchens. It is non-porous which allows food to be served directly onto it and for food to be kept hot or cold depending on the requirements. It is also oven and dishwasher friendly, incorporating grooved borders to capture every soupcon of sauce and “feet” to raise it from the table and ease handling. Four Slateware collections have been designed by celebrity chef Michael Caines and take pride of place on dining tables throughout his chain of Abode hotels as well as at Gidleigh Park where he earned his two Michelin stars. They are now also used at a number of other fine dining establishments including the new Waldorf Astoria Dubai and one of the world’s most iconic hotels, London’s Café Royal. Executive chef at the Cafe Royal Andrew Turner is using key elements of the portfolio’s Fine and Dressed collections which were designed respectively with elegant, sharp lines to complement the contemporary presentation of food and handdressed edges to reflect slate’s natural texture. Andrew said: “Slateware is very practical and easy to maintain. Its clean lines allow simple presentations to shine with ease and create a strong statement on a fine linen tablecloth. I especially like to use them when presenting canapés, Café Royal cakes and restaurant dishes with rich colours.” As well as the Fine and Dressed collections, Slateware by Welsh Slate also includes the Honed collection which highlights the natural veinings exclusive to Slateware and has been hand-polished to give an ultra-smooth, luxurious feel. More recent additions to the Slateware portfolio include the Occasion collection for professional food service establishments and a completely Bespoke collection.

T

he skai® creators truly bring synthetics to life. In addition to the perfect imitation of the fine look of animal fur, they also authentically replicate the feel. Modern interpretations of wavy fur structures makes upholstered furniture seem natural and alive, which is intensified by iridescent effects. The fine look of skai® Sofelto EN, available in trendy plain metallic colours and based on the filigree markings of the African antelope, is simply impressive. Applied to a piece of furniture, it exudes the elegant yet untamed power of the wild animal. This is due to the stunning effect of its filigree embossing, no printing is envolved. Thus, skai® Sofelto EN achieves an impressive sense of depth – including a fur-like shine. Sofas, chairs, beds, walls, counters and objects covered with skai® Sofelto EN are real eye catchers. Their irresistible charm invites you to touch them. As part of the skai® Wild Thing! Collection, the design won the renowned iF material design award.

18

Sometimes designers ought to dive deep before they surface with a new creation. This can be taken almost literally when it comes to skai® Soshagro EN: its design is based on the manta ray. The skin of the majestic elegant sea creature, whose habitat is water up to 500 feet deep, is impressive due to its delicate, irregular structure. skai® Soshagro EN interprets the original with two colours, creating an effect that is vibrant and sophisticated. The contrasting colour effect formed by glossy hills and contrasting grain valleys is particularly attractive. It gives the high-quality upholstery material an extraordinary feeling of depth. This is not only suitable for furniture in the classic to exclusive contract area, but also as large-format wall coverings. And the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Millenia Singapore was the first exclusive reference to use this material: skai® Soshagro EN decorates the walls of each of its 608 rooms. Check in to check out. Balmoral Textiles Ltd., established

1968, is one of the foremost suppliers of contract fabrics to the hotel and leisure industry throughout the UK and Ireland. Since 2012 the company has become the sole distributors for skai® upholstery synthetics and stock the awardwinning designs for next day deliveries throughout the UK. www.balmoraltextiles.co.uk

Oasis

Graphic Co. We at Oasis like to think we know a thing or two about bars and restaurants. Our expertise isn’t in haute cuisine or mixology but in branded environments. Oasis creates, prints and installs graphics of every conceivable type and style within several sectors including hospitality, field marketing, conferences & exhibitions and live events. We are very enthusiastic about our work in the hospitality sector, it gives us a great opportunity to demonstrate our true creativity, because as well as selling a tangible product or communicating straightforward brand messages, the work is about about creating an atmosphere that chimes with the location and the character of the venue as well as conforming to brand values and corporate colour schemes. Oasis’ work in the hospitality sector has covered some interesting ground. In 2012 a well-known restaurant chain began to upgrade a number of restaurants, and part of the upgrade included graphically redesigning restaurants to reflect their local heritage and heroes. Oasis has produced and delivered graphics to over 20

22

+44 (0)1628 532 003 www.oasisgraphic.co.uk info@oasisgraphic.co.uk restaurants so far, as part of this ongoing refurbishment programme. “Oasis has been producing the graphics for a well-known restaurant chain, helping them to achieve precisely the desired look and effect in each case.” explains Simon Osborne MD of Oasis, “Each restaurant is themed around a local personage or past-time, and presents a completely different challenge from a production standpoint. All graphics are individual and bespoke and must be produced with the utmost care and attention to detail, creating a unique atmosphere in each restaurant.” We have also had the opportunity to use optically clear vinyl and white ink to their full effect on window manifestation projects, some of which can be seen in Cloud 23, the iconic bar at the top of the Deansgate Hilton in Manchester. In addition to supplying and installing many of the graphic elements that have given this exclusive bar its opulent character, Oasis has used materials that offer practical benefits such as anti-graffiti vinyls in the bathrooms. We also produced a dazzling trompe-l’œil in optically clear vinyl featuring a man diving out of the window and into the streets below.

With our state of the art printers and a talented team, Oasis is continually innovating ways to print and apply graphics to create everything from show-stopping centre pieces to subtle atmospheres, and this is being put to good use by large corporates and exclusive venues all over the country.

A historical yet cosmopolitan city, Barcelona has always attracted creative minds, from artists Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso to writer George Orwell and more modern but lesser known talents such as jeweller Laura B. and the award winning French writer Jonathan Littell. Ireland has strong links with Barcelona too.

Power has lived there for the last six years and has strong ties with Spain since winning tickets to the Valencian furniture fair in September 1997.

Renowned Irish writer Colm Toibin spent time in the City after graduating from college while Dubliner Patrick O’Connell is regarded as the man who saved Barcelona football club.

22

The city may be his home and while the beautiful architecture and cobbled streets offer wonderful scenery during a break from designing, they play little part in the creative process, which has it roots in St. Kieran’s college, Kilkenny, which we here at Willie Duggan Lighting are delighted about as the city is the creative hub of Ireland and is also our home.

Perrier-Jouët announces its collaboration with designer Simon Heijdens for Design Miami 2013 Perrier-Jouët today announces its design collaboration with London-based Dutch designer Simon Heijdens. Simon will create an immersive experience to be unveiled at Design Miami/ 4 – 8 December. Titled Phare No. 1–9 this ‘lightwork’ explores the relationship between the medium and the message with an entirely new way to express a story in a poetic, sensory work. Playing with materials, volume and movement, Phare No. 1–9 merges the conceptual and the tangible to propel the Art Nouveau aesthetic into the 21st Century. As part of its core belief of celebrating beauty, Perrier-Jouët invited Simon Heijdens to make their design Salon project inspired by the renowned champagne brand’s signature Art Nouveau heritage. Perrier-Jouët’s rich history continues with a guiding belief of fusing art into the everyday. It is this sensibility that has led to the choice of working with Simon Heijdens to create his vision of Art Nouveau especially for Design Miami/. Simon Heijdens’ key works such as Lightweeds, Tree and Shade have narrative threads that bring the natural world, and a sense of ‘coincidence’, into man-made spaces. Known for pieces, Heijdens’ works often use new media to add a particular notion to a space, creating an unforgettable experience. With voice, Simon Heijdens’ works are transformative yet subtle, concerned with temporality and the human experience.

Moët Impérial is the House’s iconic champagne. Created in 1869, it embodies Moët & Chandon’s unique style, a style distinguished by its bright fruitiness, its seductive palate and its elegant maturity.

Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut NV Tastes every bit as good as many vintage wines at twice the price, Veuve Clicquot's yellow label is a full, rich, powerful Champagne with about as many hard edges as a blancmange! IWC Bronze Medal Winner. Perfect to crack open and impress your friends with. 'The Widow', as Veuve Clicquot is affectionately known, is one of the best-known and most enjoyed Champagnes. Full-bodied and richly flavoured, it is one of the finest Champagnes available. In the words of passionate winemaker, Dominic Demarville, "Quality is the Veuve Clicquot philosophy. Madame Clicquot's motto was: "one quality only, the finest". It is the same under my rule".

Mumm Cordon Rouge A true classic with a unique character and irreproachably consistent taste, it’s name alone conjures up a whole world of flavour. All the richness and finesse of the Mumm vineyard is expressed in Cordon Rouge. In the late nineteenth century, this champagne was decorated with the famous red ribbon, as a tribute to the Legion d’Honneur. In their new finery the bottles were presented to Mumm’s best customers. The decoration became the hallmark of one of the world’s most renowned champagnes, Mumm Cordon Rouge!

NELSON ADVANTAGE IS 30% MORE EFFICIENT 1700 items per hour!

Nelson’s latest Advantage Pass Through which, despite having a similar footprint to other pass through machines, has a staggering 30% increased load capacity! This is achieved by an ingenious design which maximises eďŹƒciency whilst creating extra space. Both the hood operating handle and raising and lowering mechanism are sited in unobtrusive positions thus significantly increasing useable internal capacity. This means that the Nelson Advantage can easily accommodate a 600 x 500mm basket which will hold 24 x 26cm plates. Therefore, it can process 1440 plates in an hour on a 1 minute wash cycle or, more realistically, up to 1700 items. Not only does the Nelson Advantage wash a third more items than a conventional pass through, it uses 30% less energy. This is partly due to the double level of thermal insulation and partly to the reduced water consumption which, in turn, requires less energy to heat. Just 2.7 litres of hot, fresh rinse water (the optimum quantity for thorough rinsing) is drawn for each cycle and is then cleverly utilised in the subsequent wash cycle. Meanwhile, the dirtiest water drains away. The 22 litre tank is, therefore, kept constantly refreshed with minimal demand for either energy or water while still producing perfect wash quality.

From a ‘wet dog glass smell’ to bars on wheels the story of one of Britain’s best known bar fitments manufacturers

On 1st August this year – Yorkshire Day, no less – ServaClean celebrated its Silver Anniversary. It’s 25 years since the Company launched with a set of racks on which to store washed glassware in bars and avoid that “wet dog glass smell” which comes from storing damp glasses on flat shelves and makes you think “the beer’s gone off !” At that time, the major brewers – who owned and operated most of the pubs in the UK – were striving to achieve a perfectly clean glass in which to present “the perfect pint” and ServaClean’s ‘GLASSRack’ was found to complete the process. One thing led to another and it wasn’t long before bar operators were asking for solutions to other niggling problems behind their bars. ServaClean quickly responded with shelves for glasswasher baskets; space saving sink units; insulated ice chests for cocktail service; etc., etc. But the big jump came following the creation of ‘BARFrame’ – a screw together stainless steel counter building structure to replace traditional timber construction which, let’s face it, just doesn’t stand the tests of time or hygiene in the unavoidable wet and sticky environment of most bar counters.

Glasswash Area - can be in-bar or remote

Mobile Bar - this one is for beer dispense. We do mobile bars including cocktail stations, coffee stations, etc.

By this time, ServaClean had gained a lot of experience from their life behind bars and were surprised at the lack of operational planning in many bar designs. So the Company invested in CAD technology to offer free bar planning with three dimensional drawings which show bar operators exactly what will fit and how a particular layout will ensure an efficient, behind-the-bar operation. The planning works and, when it’s possible to compare “before and after” sales, increases of 20% are not uncommon. In one case, a holiday camp bar recorded a massive 54% jump in turnover whilst operating with three less staff ! ServaClean’s latest product is a top quality range of mobile bar units called ‘MOVERBar’ which uses different combinations of their standard fitments for each style of operation – from draught beers through to cocktails and even coffee service. The Company wouldn’t claim to be a “mighty oak” just yet but they certainly have many more “branches” to their business than when they planted that first “acorn” back in 1988.

Each of these varieties start from the same base of Irish Grain Spirit that has been five times distilled and charcoal filtered to create a smooth clean base. Our unique Bottle-aging process along with the best Ingredients available makes our Liqueurs really something special – Delicately sweet but not Syrupy as liqueurs often are. Having picked up numerous awards for premium Taste and quality in Ireland, London and the USA our Consumers and Critics undoubtedly agree.

Our Bottle-aging method is not that dissimilar to how a whisky or Gin is aged and Matured in a barrel often with Botanicals to enhance the finished spirit.
