Man v Machine?

A Vision for Product Traceability Advances in Vision technology are offering new opportunities for manufacturers to improve the quality checking and traceability of alpha numeric characters printed on packaging such as use-by or expiry dates. SICK UK’s Applications Specialist for Imaging & Measurement Systems, Neil Sandhu discusses advances in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and manufacturers. For more information on the new SICK LECTOR620 OCR scanner, please contact Andrea Hornby on 01727 831121 or email

In the war of man v machine, the realm of code reading is turning into a hardfought battleground as technology advances on the capabilities of the human brain. Highly-complex visual data can now be included in high-speed machinereadable formats, such as 1D barcodes, 2D datamatrix codes and QR codes. Meanwhile, humans still rely, on old-fashioned alphanumeric letters and numbers to understand and convey information. On the other hand, the brain can ‘decode’ a wide variation in design and quality ‘common sense’ to verify the information. True, barcodes, data matrix and QR codes are designed with redundancy in mind, so that a certain amount of damage can be tolerated in a production environment. However, the codes are still in the binary form i.e. no print or some print, whether that print is a line, dot or a square.

4 - Automation Update August 2014

Letters, numbers and symbols are a different story. Humans can recognise lettering shapes despite distortions; because we can also look at context and meaning e.g. ‘th0ught’ is recognisable. Automated systems need to use camerabased technologies to detect and inspect shapes and symbols by comparing them to a pre-determined shape or pattern.

Variohm announce new RTD sensor line Variohm EuroSensor’s new ERTD line of sensors are available in a choice of PT100, PT500 and PT1000 elements for precision temperature measurement across a temperature range of -70°C to +500°C continuous - with tolerance class options of 2B, B, A, 1/3B and 1/10B. These IEC 751 are extremely durable and designed for use where long term stability, interchangeability and accuracy over a large temperature range are important. Aimed at universal temperature measurement applications in automotive, white goods, HVACR, medical, industrial and more; the uniform linear sensing devices have excellent long term stability, shock and vibration extremely compact,

typically measuring just 2.4 x 1.9 x 1 mm. Variohm also supplies ERTD product line. Variohm designs, manufactures and sources a broad range of competitively priced position, load, force and temperature sensor technologies for demanding measurement applications throughout industry, agriculture, construction, autosports, and research. 5 - Automation Update August 2014

Single wire connection? Passive distribution boxes? Fieldbus? This question sparks intense discussions in the electrical departments of many companies. Here Murrelektronik presents its approach to this question using Germany company Schuster Maschinenbau GmbH to illustrate it’s system consultancy service – CONNECTIVITY. Schuster has four main pillars: it produces vertical turning machines, impact cutting systems, automation solutions and custom machines. They deliver 35 machines and systems a year. The majority - about 30 machines - are vertical turning machines. The company distinguishes three cells, pick-up lathes and vertical turning cells with integrated fast handling systems. Across the globe, Murrelektronik System Consultants create the best installation concepts by looking individually at each machine. Working together with customers, Murrelektronik analyse the entire process according to the TCO perspective, identifying the most suitable connectivity technology from more than 42,000 products. Products that have international approvals, have been pre-engineered and work perfectly together. And the best part is: our System Consultancy advice is completely free! Schuster is a mid-sized company with strong customer orientation: many machines are designed according to customer requirements. Murrelektronik worked closely with Herbert Assner, Manager of the electrical department at Schuster. One of his responsibilities is installing and connecting the I/O points on the machines into the control cabinet and connecting them to the controller. Three different installation concepts are established in the market: conventional parallel technology. An important criteria for selecting the right installation concept is the relationship between the I/O points and their distance to the machine.

practical solution for most of their machines. These 50 I/O points is a typical number for a Schuster machine and they are located in a compact area. 6 - Automation Update August 2014

INTELLIGENT POWER CONTROL – MICO Safeguarding machine up-time The power supply is the heart of every control cabinet. Advanced power supply systems have to be protected in a consistent and targeted manner

MICO monitors currents: Select a maximum individual current value for each channel and MICO will monitor this value. When the value is within the appropriate range the LED will be solid green.

MICO indicates when current is approaching the maximum load: When 90% of the selected current load is reached the LED will flash green.

MICO detects overload: In case of short circuits, or if the load current exceeds the selected value, MICO switches off the affected channel and the LED will flash red.

MICO provides flexibility: Every channel can be manually switched on or off by pressing the button. When this happens the LED will be red.

FPG7: SMD fuseholder now with stabilizing posts SCHURTER now equips its FPG7 shock-safe SMD fuseholder with two stabilizing posts. The added posts extend from the existing front standoffs, providing increased stability during board assembly, and when replacing the fuse. The FPG7 is also the only shock-safe SMD fuseholder on the market for 5x20 mm cartridge fuses. The trend towards SMD applications continues unabated. In response, SCHURTER already offers a large selection of SMD components such as fuses and fuseholders in its product range. As part of the SCHURTER range, the FPG7offers the only shocksafe SMD fuseholder on the market. The newly added stabilizing posts improve the design, by optimizing the stability of the fuseholder during the mounting and soldering process of the PCB. Further, the stabilizing posts help absorb the axial forces that arise when the fuse is being replaced. With rated power acceptance of up to 2.5 W at 10 A / 250 VAC according to IEC, combined with rated current of up to 16 A at 400 VAC according to UL/CSA, the FPG7 is the ideal solution for applications requiring primary protection. Overall, the FPG7 is well suited for applications where the following requirements must be met: SMD assembly, compact design, primary protection, and external access to fuses. household appliances. Depending on the application, the customer can select between version. The FPG7 is manufactured with RoHS-conforming materials that are temperature requirements for equipment in unattended operation according to IEC 60335-1 and the FPG7 achieves a protection class of IP40 and a shock-safe category of PC2. placement machines.
