What All Engineers Should Know About Variable Speed Drive Repairs I’m sure we can all agree Variable Speed Drives are expensive pieces of equipment that require regular maintenance to minimize premature failure and maximize the life span of your asset. However, all makes of Drives do fail and one of the most common faults is IGBT (Insulated-gate bipolar transistor) failure. An insulated-gate bipolar transistor is a three-terminal power semiconductor device primarily used as an electronic switch in Variable Speed Drives. When a drive suffers an IGBT failure the best practice is to replace all three devices, even if only one has actually failed, as the fault condition more often than not weakens the remaining devices which will inevitably lead to a further premature failure and more costly downtime for the user. So far, I’m sure I’ve not told you anything you don’t already know, but the real issue with drive repairs is this…it is imperative that each repair is fully load tested. This is important because each IGBT has a free-wheeling diode which you can only accurately be tested with a full inductive load test. Most companies that offer Drive Repair do not have the required load test facilities and hence they simply carry out a resistive load test which actually does not show if the IGBT’s are fully functioning as a power
device. This leads to a very high percentage of IGBT drive repairs simply failing again as soon as they are fitted to the original application when load is introduced, leading to another repair cost and more costly downtime for your process. In summary all engineers should only send their valuable variable speed drive
assets to drive repair facilities that have fully qualified Drive Engineers who have attended the relevant manufacturers courses. But also insist that the repairer has suitable load test facilities, that they carry out a full load test on your drive and they give you the option to attend a witness test or at the very least request a video of the final test. Insisting on these simple steps for all your drive repairs ensures 100% that your drive is repaired correctly and fully functioning before you put back into service on your plant, thus ensuring minimum repair cost and minimises expensive lost production costs. Solutions for power supply continuity Adel Systems are based in Italy and are a leading developer and manufacturer of industrial switchmode power supplies, ‘DC UPS’ and intelligent battery chargers. DC UPS - CBI Series The CBI DC UPS combine the functions of a power supply, a back up module and of a battery charger in one unit. They use switching technology with microcontrollers and optimise the supply to the DC load either when the AC mains is present or when on battery backup. The CBI units do not allow for deep discharge of the batteries. The CBI units switch from the mains to the battery in the event of a mains failure without interruption. There is automatic protection without fuse against the reserve polarity, short circuit and overload and overvoltage. They carry out diagnostic checks on the connected battery through the Life Test, every 90 minutes, enabling the users to select the most appropriate charging curve to maximise the efficiency of the system and to support a life battery. They are equipped with two relays; one to operate to indicate the status of the mains or battery backup and another to indicate any of the eight battery protection functions that the unit monitors. The primary function of the CBI unit is to optimise the battery condition so when it is required the battery is as good as its life cycle will allow for. There are options for communication via CANbus and MODbus on certain modules, and the DYP351 displays allows on the CBI500W and the CBI280 series an option for a door mounted display for battery status updates locally. All units are DIN rail mounted and there is a range of battery carriers available to safely and easily fit the battery packs into the enclosure or panel. 10 - Automation Update
BATTERY CHARGERS - CB Range The Adel System CB battery chargers are a range of microprocessors controlled chargers. Based on switch mode technology, they produce an output voltage stabilised at a pre-set value, even when not charging the battery. These battery chargers have three charging levels - recovery, boost and trickle charge. All the chargers have a relay output for a range of battery bank protection functions: replace battery or flat battery; fault in the main; high voltage at the battery ends; open or sulphated battery; reverse polarity, short-circuited element and wrong battery voltage. The CB battery charger checks the battery every 90 minutes. All the modes are automatic and other than selecting the battery type and charge current level no other set up is required. Communication options of CANbus and MODbus are available on various models. The CB12245A and CB280122410A are available with dual output voltage 12 or 24 V DC and a stabilised power supply.

SICK Reflex Array Sensors Are on the Leading Edge SICK has unveiled its next-generation family of smart photoelectric 2D light array sensors, the RAY10 and RAY26, to detect even the most difficult-to-see objects moving on high-speed conveyors.
he SICK RAY10 and RAY26 Reflex Array Sensors create a wide 2D light band to reliably detect the leading edges of objects, even when they not clearly defined, transparent, or are only a few millimetres high, such as polybags, flat packaging and parcels. SICK’s RAY10 and RAY26 sensors deliver consistently high detection results, no matter if objects are irregularly-shaped, randomly positioned on the conveyor belt, shiny, high-contrast, or varied in height or colour. The sensors will also detect perforated objects without danger of false tripping or the need to programme multiple switching operations. Where complex configuration of multiple sensors, or costly light grids, might previously have been needed to obtain reliable results, the compact RAY10 or RAY26 sensors achieve high levels of performance in a fraction of the space and set-up time. “The RAY10 and RAY26 Reflex Array sensors are a new proposition for integrating even the most challenging detection tasks in high-speed conveying applications in diverse industries from parcel handling to food packaging, automotive assembly or electronics,” explains David Hannaby, SICK’s UK Product Manager for presence detection. “The sensors also offer all the benefits of smart diagnostics and IO-Link integration, while halving the costs of detection compared to conventional solutions.” Installation and commissioning of the RAY10 and RAY26 is quick and easy, using SICK’s PinPoint LED

technology which makes the light array clearly visible, so the sensors can be accurately aligned. A simple teach-in process completes the set-up. The sensor settings can also be adjusted via IO-Link according to the object size and the conveyor conditions, reducing the need for time-consuming manual intervention during commissioning and operation. Both the RAY10 and RAY26 offer advantages for realtime condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. They feature SICK’s BluePilot bargraph indicator to show the level of dirt build-up on the lens of the sensor and reflector. Using SICK’s AutoAdapt technology, the sensors automatically adjust their sensitivity to contamination to lengthen the time between maintenance intervals. The sensor status can also be communicated via IO-Link to the PLC, so cleaning can be scheduled without unnecessary downtime.
The RAY10 and RAY26 family are smart sensors that enable efficient Industry 4.0 integration of machines via IO-Link, together with the ability to track and view sensor health and diagnostics via an HMI or PLC. Smart logic functions embedded in the sensors themselves can also be used to develop custom field-level applications. The SICK RAY26 has three variants to detect objects ≥3 mm, ≥5 mm or ≥10 mm always within a 55 mm light array, with a sensing range for detection from 0 m to max. 4.5 m depending on the type. The RAY26 offers the option of conveyor belt suppression to compensate for vertical movement of the conveyor, through a stepped deactivation of the zone between the conveyor and the light array. The smaller SICK RAY10 detects objects ≥5 mm within a 25 mm light array with a response time of just 0.5 ms and a maximum sensing range of 1.5 metres. ALL-IN-ONE SENSOR HELPS REDUCE ENERGY COSTS Optimising production processes by improving energy efficiency and reducing costs are likely to be high priorities for most manufacturers and they can be achieved, thanks in part to the availability of increasingly sophisticated monitoring and measuring devices. A good example of this is the new SD family of Thermal Compressed Air Meters from ifm electronic, which incorporates an integrated pressure and temperature sensor. The SD family of devices have been developed as an ‘allin-one-sensor’ to provide ‘at-a-glance’ compressed air monitoring with volumetric flow, totalised volume plus pressure and temperature of the air. With clear TFT display and IO-Link interface, the unit can be easily parameterised and all information transferred to the control platform. Furthermore, by integrating several key measurement parameters in just one sensor it contributes towards significant savings on hardware costs (wiring & input cards) along with reduced installation and ongoing maintenance costs.
Efficient monitoring of operating pressures is also crucial to overall energy efficiency and thanks to the integrated pressure measurement, both the pressure drop on polluted filter systems and the compressed air systems overall operating pressure, can be accurately monitored. This is important because if the installation comprises of actuators that are operating at 5 bar instead of the ideal 6.3 bar, load speed is reduced by 25% with a decrease in productivity.
The SD sensors can also help toward improving energy efficiency of process installations thanks to its ability to precisely monitor for leakages. This, combined with its high repeatability, enables exact location of the costs of compressed air consumption to the respective production line which helps operators to optimise product cost calculations. Robust Construction - Made To Last The Multi Mont standard range utilises Spheroid Graphite (SG) Iron for the hubs and flanges. SG Iron offers greater elasticity, resulting in a better and more robust coupling which is less susceptible to damage. The range also allows the incorporation off keyless clamping elements, either internal locking assemblies or external shrink discs. The keyless clamping method of locating a coupling hub on to a shaft offers many distinct advantages over traditional methods such as keyways, splines & thermal shrink fits. Depending upon the individual product variant, a Natural / Synthetic Rubber mix or Nitrile rubber is used for the flexible transmission elements. Natural rubber is proven to be the best material for damping therefore Multi Mont couplings are ideally suited to applications where torsional vibration is present. Standard flexible elements have a temperature range of -40°C to 100°C, and for higher temperatures silicone elements with temperature range of -70°C to 120°C are available.
