The ODU-MAC® modular hybrid, is a series of three connector variants that transmit signals, power, high-current, high-voltage, coax and other media such as air, fluids, high-speed data or fiber optics – all in one interface. Reports from ODU customers confirm that this rectangular connector can

achieve over one million mating cycles, all thanks to its reliable contact systems. New to this range is the ODUMAC® RAPID, a robust half-shell housing system that provides considerable time-savings in assembly and also adds a wide variety of internal-mount options - the ideal way to allow for system up-dates and add-ons. Also newly introduced is a High-Current Module with

a 12mm diameter contact with a current load of up to 225amps and an operating voltage of 1,000volts (VG3). ODU Threaded Connector Developed from the well-established ODUAMC® [Advanced Military Connector], the new ODU Threaded Connector utilises a screw-locking-with-rachet mechanism [half-turn locking] and is intended for applications requiring additional security, or where pressure/vibration/ temperature could be problematic for other connectors. This connector is rated IP68, has 360° shielding for excellent, trouble-free data transfer of Cat5 Gigabit/ Ethernet, in an operating temperature from -51°C to + 125°C, together with a lifetime of greater than 2,000 mating cycles.

Understanding and Applying PROFIBUS, PROFINET and IO-Link – Oct 24, Coventry Taking place at the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, this free-to-attend seminar will address the key practical issues arising from the use of digital communications technologies in automated manufacturing and process industry applications, with particular attention being paid to network design, installation and commissioning through to functional safety & cybersecurity, Industry 4.0 and EMC. Keynote Address PI Chairman Karsten Schneider will be giving the keynote presentation covering the latest developments in Time Sensitive Networking (TSN), PROFINET in Process applications, Advanced Physical Layer (APL), OPCUA and Industry 4.0 Other presentations will include: New PI Guidelines for Functional Bonding and Shielding of PROFIBUS and PROFINET The ever-increasing use of high frequency switching devices in industrial automation can result in high frequency currents circulating in an equipotential bonding network that was not designed for this purpose. The absence of a proven low-impedance bonding network can result in these currents taking alternative, and often undesirable routes. Occasionally these will be the shields of industrial network cables such as PROFIBUS and PROFINET

that in turn can lead to intermittent communications problems. This presentation will discuss the issues in more detail and will explain the relevance of the recently released PI guidelines “Functional Bonding and Shielding for PROFIBUS and PROFINET”. Sigma ‘Totes’ Happy with SSI Schaefer

SSI Schaefer is delighted that Sigma Pharmaceuticals has taken delivery of 34,000 of its plastic totes at their distribution centre in Watford.

Sigma is an independent short-line wholesaler, offering an industry leading range that includes generics, branded medicines, OTC medicines, parallel imports, daily living aids, surgicals and unlicensed medicines. From their headquarters, items are distributed through their comprehensive delivery network to customers across the UK. Sigma is proud of its heritage and has been in the Watford area for over 40 years and their state-of-the-art distribution centre is a testament to the investment in the service to their customers and their success and continued growth. The warehouse handles a vast range of products each day so in order to fulfil their storage and distribution requirements, Sigma ordered 34,000 new totes with single detachable lids, split equally between two different sizes – 170 mm and 270 mm high. This offers flexibility for both storage and distribution of both small and large items and orders. With detachable lids the orders can be sealed once the tote is packed, so that it is secure prior to distribution. The totes were manufactured by SSI Schaefer and branded to Sigma’s exact requirements making them not only functional, but also a smart way to promote their company wherever they are seen. Joe Joyce, Container Solutions Manager at SSI Schaefer commented, “Sigma had some initial plans to source the totes overseas, however once we had spent time with them discussing their requirements and following a successful trial of our totes, they were impressed by both the stock quality and service levels SSI Schaefer could provide.” Pravesh Patel, Operations Director at Sigma commented: “I’m very pleased with the high quality standard of our SSI Schaefer totes. Since we have been using them, they have proven to be strong, robust and durable – perfect for our operation in terms of both distribution and storage. Each is individually barcoded and we have had them branded with our logo by Schaefer so they can easily be identified and attributed to us within our delivery network. Endoline cuts programming time in half with new SMART screen technology As Industry 4.0 gathers pace, and mobile technology becomes increasingly utilised throughout UK manufacturing sites, Endoline Machinery is rolling out a brand new, icon based HMI SMART screen. Featuring 50% less pages than previous screens, the new interface will cut programming time by half.

Progressive cavity pumps for efficient waste removal

Thanks to their versatility and reliability, progressive cavity (PC) pumps continue to remain popular among food processors for a variety of product transfer duties including waste removal of by-products and waste. Most food plants generate by-products, particularly if engaged in primary processing and these must be removed from production areas as efficiently and hygienically as possible, complying with ABP regulations, incurring minimal costs whilst maximising any potential revenue. Traditional removal methods for solid waste include: manual removal using tote bins; blown air systems and vacuum systems; and water flumes. Food processors often use a combination of these, however, they can incur high running costs in the form of manual labour, energy use or water treatment. PC pumps offer an alternative, removing waste in enclosed pipework from both high care and low risk areas, with low energy and labour demands.

Chopping with pumping SEEPEX has designed a progressive cavity pump that can chop and pump in the same unit, removing solid waste containing up to 40% dry solids (ds), without the need to add water. This open-hopper PC pump features an auger feed into fixed and rotating knives that can chop most products, producing a lower volume of waste which is easier to handle. Discarded products, raw materials, trimmings and rejects can all be handled within a single multi-purpose unit enabling efficient and hygienic removal from both high care and low risk areas. Food processors gain a solution that delivers low cost removal while preserving the highest residual value of their byproducts – particularly if the resultant ‘soup’ is sent to be converted into biogas. 18 - Automation Update

PCPs in action SEEPEX has provided a series of bespoke pumping solutions to Natures Way Foods, a manufacturer of fresh convenient foods including ready-to-eat fruit, and mixed fruit packs. The preparation of the finished products generates peelings, cores and stone waste, all of which must be removed from production areas. Their existing systems were not able to handle the volume or variable nature of either the different fruit types or the process methods, some of which are

automated whilst others rely on hand trimming. To combat this, SEEPEX has installed three different PC pump systems to handle different waste types and to fit within the factory configurations. They have low energy requirements compared to blown or vacuum systems and require no additional water to function efficiently. Their versatility and modular design enables them to cope with all the waste products, delivering cost savings and improved hygiene for today’s food processors.
