MTA and Factory 2050 at the AMRC partner for exciting Industry 4.0 feature for MACH 2018

Low cost automation can revolutionise SME’s businesses The Manufacturing Technologies Association and the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), have partnered to put together a unique feature to demonstrate cost effective adaption of Industry 4.0 Technologies at MACH 2018. MACH 2018 is the place to discover new technologies that shape the world we live in. The AMRC’s Factory 2050 is the UK’s first state of the art factory entirely dedicated to conducting collaborative research into digital assembly and flexible component manufacturing. The two are staging a joint showcase of cost effective solutions for the adaption and integration of Industry 4.0 technologies into SME manufacturing businesses. Recent figures (from the Made Smarter Review – see below) found that the positive impact on UK manufacturing of faster innovation and adoption of Industrial Digitalisation Technologies could be as much as £455bn over the next decade. James Selka, CEO of the MTA, said of the project “The Integrated Manufacturing Group at Factory 2050 and we at the MTA understand that it is vital to cut through some of the jargon and hyperbole around Industry 4.0 and show first-hand the practical advantages Big Data can bring to an SME business.” He continued “In the light of the publication of the Government’s Industrial Digitalisation Review – ‘Made Smarter’ we must demonstrate to British industry the benefits this technology can bring to their businesses. It is our job to bridge the gap between industry and academia and MACH 2018 is exactly the platform to do this.” The idea behind the project stems from the perceived implications in 6 - Automation Update

terms of cost and complexity faced by SME’s when wanting to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies – a big barrier identified in Made Smarter. By providing a variety of solutions on how current capital equipment can be adapted to meet the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution the exhibit will demonstrate how Big Data can help companies streamline their production and improve cycle times without making huge investments. The overriding theme running through MACH 2018 is interconnected technology and the future of manufacturing. MACH showcases live working machinery and staying true to this tradition the combined feature will demonstrate up to six separate manufacturing cells. These cells will replicate familiar manufacturing environments that have been integrated with Industry 4.0 Technologies. James Fudge, Head of Events at the MTA, said “This is an exciting project we have undertaken with the AMRC’s Integrated Manufacturing Group at Factory 2050. MACH has always been the place to go to find the latest

technologies and this joint venture should prove fascinating for visitors and exhibitors alike.” He continued “We understand the cost constraints that face SME businesses; it is important to let companies know that Industry 4.0 technology is accessible to them. You can take an outdated machine and retrofit sensors to it allowing you to get real-time data and to detect through-put fault. It will be really useful to businesses to be shown some of the thigs you can do to the installed base that can make a difference.” The AMRC’s Head of Digital, Dr Rab Scott, said: “The MTA’s MACH exhibition gives the AMRC a great opportunity to demonstrate that the adoption of digital technologies can be achieved at low cost and that the impact on businesses can be transformational. “This project is a prime example of the work that the AMRC does nationally with manufacturing SMEs. On the stand, we will also be demonstrating what the future of assembly and manufacturing could look like, showing what the value of these technologies could be.”

RockStar® ModuPlug More freedom – Less effort RockStar® ModuPlug is setting new standards combining power, signals and data in one connector and is the platform for future, innovative modular connectivity solutions Industrial applications are becoming increasingly complex. The demands being made of the connectivity used are growing at the same time. Functionality in the smallest of installation spaces, safe installation and a fast retrofitting process are just some of the product properties being called for. RockStar® ModuPlug addresses these demands by enabling the flexible combination of all the necessary functions for power, signal and data transmission in a single application-specific interface. New and more compact inserts allow for a significantly increased functional density compared to previous solutions.

Half the pitch size, twice the module slots Up until now, there were two standard module widths for heavy-duty connectors: ‘Single 1.0’ and ‘Double 2.0’. Weidmuller have broken away from this standard, and are creating new dimensions with the intermediate sizes of ‘Half 0.5’ and ‘Single Plus 1.5’. Four different module widths make for unprecedented levels of flexibility and allow for the construction of particularly space-saving connector solutions. The modules reduce the amount of space required and cut costs when compared with fixed-pole inserts and other modular plug-in connector systems. The sophisticated frames and modules can be installed with extreme ease and integrated into HDC enclosures with the IP65 and IP68 protection classes. You can even use the RockStar® ModuPlug to supplement existing applications without any need to make system adjustments.

More and Less - Discover your freedom with RockStar® ModuPlug More power – Less weight Users of the RockStar® ModuPlug have the option of either using more functional modules within the same installation space or having the same functions as before but with a smaller frame and housing. In addition to space savings, the latter option also helps to achieve weight savings, making it particularly suitable for applications in the fields of railway engineering and wind energy.

More signals – Less space - transfer more signals with the same enclosure dimensions: Thanks to a higher contact density – 36 signal contacts at a rated voltage of 250 V, the double module HD36 achieves 50 percent more contacts in the same space as the market standard.

More data – Less limits - A new level of data transfer Two Cat.6A cables each with 10 Gbits can now be integrated in a single module. The use of standard M12 connector technology achieves optimal EMC values and the 360˚ shield connection offers maximum protection against external interference.

10 - Automation Update

More options – Less costs - save installation space, weight and costs: you

can choose between four different module widths. The halved pitch size allows twice the number of module slots in the frame, plus the reduced pitch separation allows more functionality in the same space.

More convenience – Less risk The innovative design of RockStar® ModuPlug offers assembly and disassembly without tools. A fixed locking position provides stability for faster and easier assembly. Incorrect connection is avoided through a unique coding system. In addition, there’s less wiring work required thanks to the ability to connect two PE cables of up to 10 mm².

RockStar® ModuPlug in use: Machinery High performance in the smallest of spaces with RockStar® ModuPlug

The challenges in machine construction are numerous: flexible

machine units need to be networked. In robotics, space is limited to a bare minimum. On production lines, processing of very high data volumes must be ensured. With RockStar® ModuPlug, you can transmit more signals in less space saving on connector costs.

Transportation Reliable jumper cables with RockStar® ModuPlug are a durable solution for secure data and signal transmission within the train. In transport engineering, increasing amounts of data and signals need to be transferred reliably. Special air-conditioned containers place exacting demands on power transmission. More functionality in the same area enables space and weight saving. Weidmuller’s slim 100 A modules ensure high power transmission with a low space requirement.

Energy - Efficient and secure with RockStar® ModuPlug Wind turbines have to be operated efficiently, reliably and with low maintenance. Measurement data should be transferred using as little space as possible. The high-speed data module can accommodate megabit and gigabit data inserts. It offers transfer rates of up to 10 Gbits in the smallest of installation spaces.

Selwood sponsors ground-breaking training scheme for young people A pioneering apprenticeship scheme to train the next generation of skilled workers is being supported by leading plant specialist Selwood. The company is sponsoring a Hampshire-wide training programme that is the first of its kind in the UK and sets up young people for a career in the civil engineering industry. The apprenticeship scheme is led by the Solent Civil Engineering Employers’ Group – a newly-formed consortium of prominent civil engineering companies in Hampshire. The group was created in response to a shortage of skilled staff in the industry, creating an overreliance on agency staff. The scheme puts young, enthusiastic people through an intensive training programme – based at the Civil Engineering Training Centre at HMS Daedalus at Lee-on-the-Solent – and prepares them for life on site while guaranteeing employment with one of the groups within the consortium. As a key supplier of plant equipment to many of the employers, Selwood offered to become official sponsor of the programme. Selwood, based in Chandler’s Ford, donated equipment for training, including a dumper and roller, as well a large number of other products such as grease guns and plant nappies for containing fluid spills.

14 - Automation Update

This is the first year of the scheme, being run in partnership with Fareham College, and the first intake was in September. The two-year Civil Engineering and Groundworks Apprenticeship begins with 20 weeks of training at the Civil Engineering Training Centre before the course continues at site level. Apprentices are assigned a mentor on site who will assist in completion of the apprenticeship. Aaron Boyce, Key Accounts Manager at Selwood, who has been co-ordinating Selwood’s involvement in the scheme, said: “As I come from a long line of groundworkers, it was something that I was keen to support and this was backed up by the Selwood board who were only too happy to support this scheme. “It is a real honour for Selwood to be sponsoring a scheme that is skilling up young people and giving them the opportunity for a successful career in the civil engineering industry.” Kevin Miskella, who is Construction Director for Stockbridge-based Carlton Civil Engineering, a member of the Solent consortium, said: “We have been working since January to reach our goal of being set up and running for September and we have achieved just that.

“We could not have achieved so much, so quickly without the support of key partners such as Selwood. “The fact that companies like Selwood have been so willing to assist means that our dream is now a reality. “From early next year, thanks to a concerted team effort, we will be producing new local labour resources to man and run our sites to keep up with the demand for a younger better-trained workforce in our area.” The Solent Civil Engineering Employers’ Group is being led by the directors of major companies across the Solent area including: Aeropark Developments, Baram, Blanchard Wells, Blaze Construction, Carlton Civil Engineering, Dyer & Butler, Gracelands, John Reilly, PTC, Knights Brown, R&W and Southern Concrete.
