CRISP AND REFRESHING GINGER BEER FROM CORNISH ORCHARDS What could be more refreshing than an ice cool glass of ginger beer? And no ginger beer is more refreshing than the delicious offering from Cornish Orchards. Best served chilled with ice and lemon, it’s wonderfully light, sparkling and well balanced, with a subtle, unmistakable taste of aromatic ginger – everything you’d expect from a really good ginger beer! While it’s scrumptious as it is – beautifully complementing oriental dishes such as stir-fry or a Thai curry – Cornish Orchards’ alcoholic ginger beer also makes the perfect cocktail pairing too – it goes amazingly with rum! So what makes it so good? Well, the answer (as ever with all things foodie) lies in the quality and expert blending of select, natural ingredients – a
combination of the finest Nigerian and Jamaican ginger, star anise, cinnamon, malted barley, and lemon zest meld together to create this moreish taste sensation – the smell alone is truly fantastic! So, if you’re looking for the perfect accompaniment to your next Asian-inspired feast, or simply you crave a new cocktail idea, then it’s time to crack open a bottle or two! SET SAIL FOR A POP-UP GATHERING WITH FAL OYSTER
THE PERFECT SUNDAY ROAST AT THE LEMON ARMS
Lovers of shellfish will remember reading about Ostraca, the popup oyster and seafood bar, and more recently about Fal Oyster, suppliers of fresh, sail-gathered or hand-picked Cornish oysters. This month, fisherman Ranger reveals the third element of the business: Pop Up Gatherings. From humble beginnings (a stall on Customs House Quay in Falmouth, with just a cool box of oysters, an oyster knife, some turquoise napkins and Tabasco), Pop Up Gatherings is now a very different sight to behold, taking over Customs House Quay with food and drink traders and, of course, Ostraca. “Pop Up Gatherings will host two festivals each year”, says Ranger. “Fal Oyster Wink – a play on ‘kiddlywink’, the reputed haunt of pirates and smugglers – will run mid-October, to celebrate the start of the Fal Oyster fishing season. Fal Oyster Gathering will run on the last weekend of March, showcasing traders that gather, hunt or fish for the food on offer, as well as being a celebration of the year’s Fal Oyster harvest.” Set among the old customs buildings, Pop Up Gatherings have a truly unique atmosphere, perfect for indulging pirate style in various fruits of the sea and Cornish tipples – look out for Rebel Brewing Co’s Fal Oyster Stout with a mineral taste and creamy oyster head.
With autumn finally in the air, it’s time at last to look out that big coat at the back of the wardrobe and pack away the shorts. But that’s no reason to fret, because this is the time of year that we get to enjoy big, hearty feasts following a brisk walk. And when it comes to quality pub grub, you can’t go wrong with a visit to The Lemon Arms at Mylor Bridge. After a crisp stroll around the creek looking out upon the boats, settle down beside the roaring log burner for a traditional Sunday roast lunch – you won’t be disappointed! With generous portion sizes, the roast is an absolute must – the perfect antidote for refuelling after a walk, along with a pint of Proper Job. As with all the menu, everything is locally sourced wherever possible, from the beautifully tender meat and to the fresh, crunchy vegetables. Served with large homemade Yorkshire puddings, with lashings of gravy, it’s proper feast – and not just for the eyes. THE LEMON ARMS Lemon Hill, Mylor Bridge TR11 5NA 01326 373666
