The Crown Jewel

The Cyclades form a collection of treasures. With their striking whitewashed houses and blue skies that seem to stretch forever, this island group truly is the quintessential embodiment of Greece.
TEXT: Doya Karolini

Their unique charm lies in their perfect simplicity – endless waves of azure seas, the relentless winds that shape the landscape, and the dazzling sunshine that dances across every corner. Every island of the Cyclades offers its own character, yet all share an irresistible charm that always keeps on drawing you back.

As the poet Giorgos Seferis once said, “The Cyclades are the most beautiful islands in the world, where the sea is so clear, and the light is so pure that you feel like you are inside a dream.”

Start with Mykonos, a world-renowned destination where cosmopolitan energy meets traditional Greek island charm. The iconic windmills, standing proudly on the hillsides, are as much a symbol of the island as the vibrant nightlife and boutiques. But beyond the glamour lies an authenticity that never fades, from the narrow alleys of Mykonos Town to the quiet serenity of Ftelia Beach.

Paros, with its rolling hills and charming villages, is another gem that captures the essence of the Cyclades. Piso Livadi, a small, peaceful fishing village, and Naoussa, with its picturesque harbor and refined restaurants, offer two sides of the same coin

– one tranquil and timeless, the other lively and welcoming. For windsurfing enthusiasts, Paros is the ideal playground, with its steady winds and endless coastline. Whether exploring the Byzantine architecture of Parikia or lounging on the golden sands of Kolymbithres Beach, Paros offers a mix of adventure and relaxation that makes it a true Cycladic treasure.

Andros, known for its lush landscapes and dramatic coastlines, is a paradise for nature lovers. The island’s rugged mountains, olive groves and secluded beaches offer a rare, unspoiled beauty. Indeed perfect for those who enjoy hiking through its natural wonders, with trails leading through charming villages and along cliffside paths offering breathtaking views, the island’s rich history also comes to life in its museums, where you can explore everything from ancient artifacts to maritime heritage. In the evening, the island’s capital, Chora, reveals its elegant charm with narrow streets, traditional architecture and lively cafes.

Kythnos, with its thermal springs and natural beauty, is an island that invites you to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Known for its laid-back vibe

and picturesque beaches, Kythnos is a haven. The volcanic springs, particularly in the area of Loutra, are famous for their healing properties, making Kythnos a place where both body and mind can unwind. Its beaches, like Kolona and Apokriosis, are the epitome of Cycladic beauty, with golden sand, crystal-clear waters and a sense of peace hard to find elsewhere. For a truly authentic experience, wander through the charming villages of Kythnos, where the island’s traditions are kept alive in its architecture, local crafts and delicious cuisine.

Kea, or Tzia, is one of the quieter and less discovered islands in the Cyclades, but it is no less captivating. With its rugged terrain and lush greenery, Kea offers the perfect escape for those seeking solitude surrounded by nature. The island is dotted with ancient ruins, including the Temple of Athena, which adds a touch of history to its natural beauty. Kea’s small but charming villages, such as Ioulida and Vourkari, are filled with traditional stone houses, winding paths and cozy tavernas serving the freshest seafood. But it also boasts excellent hiking opportunities, with trails leading to secluded beaches and ancient sites, making it an absolutely ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

A cluster of twelve large and a string of smaller islands, the jewels that light up the Aegean: that is the Dodecanese, the sunniest corner of Greece. Among them, Rhodes and her fortified medieval old town and castles, where one can almost feel the presence of knights (pictured above and below). And Symi with the two and three-storey traditional stone houses, painted in all colors but predominantly in indigo, ochre and terracotta (image on right).

Where Time Stands Still

The Dodecanese Islands are a dazzling constellation in the Aegean. This group of twelve islands, each with its own unique character, offers a perfect blend of ancient ruins, medieval castles and sun-drenched beaches.

With its strategic position bridging Europe and Asia, the Dodecanese has been a crossroads of civilizations for centuries, leaving behind a rich tapestry of stories and landmarks.

Rhodes, the largest and most famous island of the group, is where the ancient world and modern life exist in harmony. Known as the Island of the Knights, Rhodes is home to one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Europe, the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through its cobbled streets, you’ll feel transported back in time, with every turn revealing centuries of history in its towering walls, narrow alleys and impressive gates. The Palace of the Grand Master stands as a testament to the island’s rich history, offering a glimpse into the life of the knights who once ruled here.

But Rhodes is more than just history – it is a place where adventure and relaxation go hand in hand. The island’s coastline, with its golden beaches and crystal-clear waters, offers the perfect setting for a day of swimming, sunbathing and watersports. Lindos, a picturesque town with a stunning ancient Acropolis overlooking the sea, is a must-visit for its stunning vistas and charming whitewashed houses. And if you’re a fan of the bizarre, don’t miss the Valley of the Butterflies, a serene haven where thousands of butterflies take flight in a magical display of nature.

As the writer Lawrence Durrell once said, “Rhodes is an island that offers, in its hills, its woods and its shores, all that one could want from a Mediterranean paradise.” This sentiment captures the essence of the island – an atmosphere both captivating and timeless.

Just a short boat ride away lies Symi, an island that feels like a hidden treasure. Known for its stunning architecture, Symi’s colorful houses cling to the hillsides, creating a postcard-perfect view as you approach the harbor. The island’s charm lies in its peaceful atmosphere. It offers an intimate escape. Wander through the cobbled streets of the main town, where vibrant houses and quaint shops line the way. Take a walk up to the famous Panormitis Monastery, perched on the edge of a cliff, or relax by the crystal-clear waters of one of the island’s many secluded beaches.

Symi is often referred to as the jewel of the Aegean, and with its serenity and breathtaking beauty, it is easy to see that the appeal lies in its ability to transport you back to a simpler time, where life moves slowly and the only rush is to catch the sunset from one of the many vantage points that dot the island.

With their diverse landscapes and historical riches, they are an essential part of Greece’s mosaic, promising to leave an indelible mark on your heart.

The Stuff of Legends

As the poet Yannis Ritsos, born in the Peloponnese, once said,

“The stones of the Peloponnese are not just ancient; they speak to you, whispering of a time long gone, but never forgotten.”

Standing at the edge of Nafplio’s harbor, gazing at Bourtzi Castle (pictured top), you’ll feel the power of this region. Both Spetses and Hydra, a treat for architecture aficionados, developed a powerful commercial presence in the 18th century (Spetses, pictured below). Their manors still stand witness. No wonder Hydra has been declared a preservable settlement (a detail of a brass door knob, typical of Hydra, above).

The Peloponnese peninsula is a region where myth and reality intertwine effortlessly. A place where gods once roamed and mortals etched their stories into the very fabric of time. Every visit to this magical land feels like stepping into a living painting. This region bears tangible traces of the many civilizations that once called it home, witnessed in its classical temples, Mycenaean palaces, Byzantine cities, as well as Ottoman, Frankish and Venetian fortresses.

Start with Nafplio, one of Greece’s most enchanting towns. Its Venetian architecture, meandering streets and majestic harbor, framed by the imposing Bourtzi Castle, a symbol of the region’s layered past, rising from the sea like a silent sentinel, holds countless stories within its ancient walls. A stroll along the water transports you to another time, where each wave crashing against the rocks speaks of battles, romance and history.

And then, there is the popular haven for boat owners, Porto Heli – where villas are nestled within pine and cypress tree forests, while secluded coves promise an escape of unspoilt pleasures.

Nestled between the Peloponnese and Attica, the Argosaronic Gulf is a sanctuary of timeless beauty. Within it lies a group of islands with picturesque harbors, dramatic coastlines and historic significance. Spetses, home to the renowned Spetses Classic

Yacht Regatta, often referred to as the “island of the sailors”, brings old-world charm to life. The graceful mansions lining the harbor whisper tales of a proud maritime history, while the narrow streets, free from cars, invite you to stroll down the old port, Dapia, with the tranquil view of its sparkling waters. For an unforgettable experience, a carriage ride takes you past the beautiful neoclassical houses to the famous Bouboulina Museum, dedicated to the heroine of the Greek War of Independence, Laskarina Bouboulina, a figure forever etched in Spetses’ identity.

A short boat ride away lies the exquisite island of Hydra, whose charm is undeniable. Known for its lack of motor vehicles, Hydra’s narrow cobblestone streets and traditional stone mansions create an idyllic atmosphere that feels almost frozen in time. This peaceful retreat has long attracted artists, writers and celebrities. It has even served as the backdrop for cinematic masterpieces. One such classic is “Boy on a Dolphin” (1957), a film starring Sophia Loren, which captured the magical allure of Hydra. Loren’s portrayal of a beautiful archaeologist hunting for a mythical statue along Hydra’s picturesque shores is still a vivid image for those who remember the film. Today, those same shores, with their crystal-clear waters, continue to invite visitors to bask in the same tranquil beauty Loren once did.

Echoes of Nature, Whispers of Soul

The land speaks in whispers; only those who listen truly understand its language. Uncover the hidden gems of Halkidiki, where nature’s rhythm guides you to moments of discovery and inspiration.

Forests, light and philosophy:

From mountain to sea, this is a place that soothes and inspires.

Just a short drive from Thessaloniki lies a region where pine forests meet the sea and time seems to slow down: Halkidiki. Shaped like a trident extending into the Aegean, its three peninsulas – Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos – each offer their own kind of quiet magic.

Kassandra, the westernmost “leg”, welcomes visitors with gentle hills, crystal-clear waters and fragrant pine groves that reach all the way to the shore. Small villages with stone houses and cobbled squares preserve the rhythms of rural life, where the pace is calm and the landscape generous.

Sithonia, the middle peninsula, is nature at its purest. It’s a place of hidden coves, winding coastal roads, olive groves and ancient walking paths. Here, the sea changes color with the light, and the scent of thyme and salt fills the air. It’s easy to lose yourself in a quiet bay or under the shade of a solitary tree.

Further east, Mount Athos rises like a guardian over the Aegean. A monastic state for more than a thousand years, it remains one of the most spiritually significant places in the Orthodox world. Though access is restricted, the presence of the mountain is deeply felt – especially its silence, its stillness, its sense of reverence.

Halkidiki is also the birthplace of Aristotle – no coincidence that a philosopher emerged from a land where the harmony of nature invites reflection. From mountain to sea, from forest to chapel, it’s a place that soothes and inspires. “In all things of nature, there is something of the marvelous”. His words seem to echo through those timeless rough landscapes.
