Ground, fixed, rammed Foundation This pile-driven PV mounting system makes use of the same technology used to install crash barriers along roads, using a machine that hammers the beams into the ground. In order to ensure the optimal depth of the beams, an expert’s report about soil conditions is produced. This report includes vertical tension tests, horizontal deformation tests and compression tests. The cross section of the pile is optimized regarding static and dynamic stresses and strains. Due to the specific cross section of the pile, a lot of material can be saved in comparison with round pillars.

14

Support unit & crossbeams The aluminum support unit is mounted on the foundation. In this way the light weight of the aluminum support and the stiffness of the steel pile are optimally combined. The crossbeams are designed to distribute the forces along the construction. Each crossbeam has fastening grooves that are integrated into the profile and allow simple, speedy mounting. The crossbeams are connected to the support units with special clamping connections. Advantages • Less installation and decommissioning costs. • Short installation times. The mechanical structure including the photovoltaic modules of a 1 MW plant can be installed in 2-3 weeks. • No concrete which means a more environmentally friendly option.

Ground, tracking, 1-axis To enhance the light captured by the sun, some ground projects use a tracking device to direct the PV modules directly to the sun. This yields higher production per PV module in comparison with systems where the PV modules are fixed. The tracking can be done in different ways: 1-axis tracking or 2-axes tracking. In a 1-axis tracking system the PV modules have only one degree of freedom, following the sun e.g. from East to West, but the module inclination stays fixed. In a 2-axes tracking system the PV module has two degrees of freedom, e.g. East – West and North – South. This gives a higher yield per module than with 1-axis tracking, but at the same time the area lost by shading is bigger. Tracking systems are especially ideal for countries with high direct irradiation, e.g. Southern Europe.

22

Roof, slanted, steeldeck Schletter specializes in mounting systems for PV installations. It has developed a mounting system especially for inclined trapezoidal steel decks and sandwich panels. This system uses a metal bracket that is customized for the respective measurements of the trapezoidal steel deck or sandwich panel. The bracket is attached to the metal roof with four self-drilling screws. At the inner side of the brackets, there is a rubber layer to make the system watertight. The self-drilling screws have a rubber joint which acts like a second barrier against water. After the brackets are attached to the roof, the aluminum profiles are mounted to the brackets using a nut and bolt. When the aluminum profiles are in place, the PV modules are fixed using clamps. With the use of crystalline panels and the fact that there is no shadow, and hence no selfshading, this mounting system has a high power density of typically 132 Wp/m2.

Roof, slanted, bipv, integrated The Mecosun system is a building-integrated system. With this system the existing roof is actually removed and replaced by PV modules. This means that the PV modules act as a new roof. There is no need for an additional waterproof layer underneath the PV modules, the Mecosun system can also be installed on insulated roofs. Because the system is designed to last decades, only durable materials have been chosen, e.g. aluminium profiles and stainless steel screws. Depending on the local conditions an additional anodization layer can be applied. Advantages • The Mecosun system can easily integrate all types of framed modules on old or new roofs. • The Mecosun system can be installed on roofs with inclinations ranging from 5° to 60°, which covers all types of slanted roofs.

36

rooftop

• The modules are well ventilated, which has a • • •

positive effect on the power production of the module. Very high power density: because the modules are installed next to each other, the Wp/m2 is very high. Roof renewal and PV installation happen at the same time. The modules can extend one quarter of a panel at the roof ridge and three quarters of a panel at the roof gutter. This means that one supplementary row of modules can be installed. Customized to your needs: all the pieces are produced and delivered according to the PV module size. The Mecosun system has been developed in close collaboration with installers: › Fast mounting › Lightweight system Aesthetic integration: the PV modules form the roof itself, which leads to a visually pleasing integration of the PV modules.

Roof, flat, roof penetration, roof fixed The solution from Solar Energie Dach, called the Solar Installation System (SIS) was specially designed for flat roofs and slanted lightweight construction buildings. The mounting system is mechanically attached to the roof. An aluminum base plate is mechanically attached to the roof. On top of the aluminum base plate comes a strip of roofing material, compatible with the existing one, to make the fixture waterproof. The aluminum support is then fixed to the base plate. Afterwards the PV modules can be installed on the aluminum support.

Advantages • Optimal protection against lift, drag and turbulence created by wind. • Optimal ballast spread: because of the large surface of the aluminum support the weight of system is spread optimally throughout the whole surface of the system. • Cables run through aluminum support and are protected from adverse weather conditions. • Cooling of PV modules: the design allows for continuous airflow on the bottom side of the PV modules to reduce overall unit temperature, thereby increasing module efficiency.
