Winter Walking Club Do you like to stay active by walking, but dislike the cold outdoor weather during the winter?

The Taylor Winter Walking Club is the answer for you then!

Weekdays from 8am - 1pm!

The Community Services Department has scheduled five hours per day INSIDE the Community Hall for individuals to come and walk: 8am—1pm Weekdays during the winter months (with the possibility of a few cancellations due to community hall booking conflicts).

The Taylor Winter Walking Club concept is fairly simple: The Community Hall opens at 8AM and closes at 1PM Weekdays All members of the public are welcome to drop-in during operating hours, and walk the circumference of the Community Hall as many times as they like.

All walkers must bring a separate pair of indoor walking shoes.

Baby strollers, wheelchairs, walking aids, etc. are welcome, just please bring a cloth to wipe off any dirt/moisture from the wheels/legs prior to walking.

The ‘Taylor Winter Walking Club‘ is an unsupervised program; all Walkers register themselves on a simple ‗sign-in‘ form A ‘tracking sheet‘ will be available for each walker, enabling them to translate the number of hall laps into kilometers.

Neat to think that by winter’s end, you may have walked 20, 30, 50, 100 Kilometers!

From time to time the Community Services Department will provide ‗walking‘ literature, or even schedule an information session with a health professional.

If you would like information on a specific topic let Shelanda know.

SAFETY FIRST! Walking is considered a safe and low risk form of physical activity. However, if walking is a new form of activity for you, gradually increase the distance or your the pace over time. Should you experience any pain or signs of injury be sure to reduce your distance or pace and consult your physician if the injury persists.

Cardio Room Opening Come One, Come All. As part of its Health & Wellness Initiative the District of Taylor is opening a small cardio room as part of the Community Hall expansion for a full services fitness studio.

2 treadmills & 1 elliptical machine are currently available for public use along with changing room.

Hours of operation: 6:00am-10:00pm Register for your Electronic Access Card at the District Office Monday to Friday 9:00am –5:00pm. $20.00 Deposit for the card. $20.00 a month User Fee So if you are tired of winter and want to do some exercise or using the treadmill at home alone. Bring a friend and check-out the District of Taylor Cardio Room Electronic Access is available at the back of the Community Hall.

Village On A Diet is a 10 part series that takes place in Taylor, B.C. This show will feature local Taylor residents as they begin a journey to lose over a ton of weight, get fit and learn about healthy living.

While on this journey Taylor became more fit, closer as a community and really learned how to rely on one another for support when trying to maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Tune in a find out what will happen each week on Village On A Diet! The show airs 9:00pm Monday nights. However be sure to check your television listing as some networks get it sooner than others. This years theme was „Land of Myth and Legends‟ and though we may have come in 2nd place this year there was plenty of spirit and innovation involved.

DISTRICT OF TAYLOR LIGHT-UP PARTY FOLLOW-UP The Community Services Department would like to thank all the families and children for coming out to the light-up festivities at the District Ice Centre December 4th.

A big THANK YOU to Santa for making time to visit all the girls and boys during this busy season. ‗Thank you‘ to the Taylor Fire Department for driving Santa to the arena! It was very enjoyable to watch the young kids get so excited to see Santa, and even have their picture taken with him.

We would also like to say a special ‗thank you‘ to the members of the School District #60 band group who came and played such beautiful music for us all to enjoy.

Many people commented on what a nice addition they were to the evening. Thank you to Ms. Montgomery, Band Instructor, for helping arrange the visit and leading such a talented group of young adults!

January Sleigh Rides Thanks to all of those that came out to Peace Island Park on January 2nd for some hotdogs, hot chocolate, and sleigh rides.

A good time was had by all.

A special thanks goes out to Barbara Bell Caretaker of Peace Island Park & Northern Horse & Mule Harness Association for all their hard work in helping to organize the event.

Lone Wolf Staff are continuing to maintain the trail around the golf course for you to enjoy at your leisure.

So come on out, invite a friend, and enjoy the stroll.

When: Wednesday February 16th, 2011 Where: Lone Wolf Club House Time: 7:00-8:00pm Mayor & Council invite area residents to come to the Lone Wolf Golf Clubhouse for an information session about the new hospital opening in Fort St John.

Tom Sparrow, Project Director Fort St. John Hospital and Residential Care Project, will be there to host an information session and answer any question that you may have in regards to the Hospital project.

Doors will open at 6:30pm with coffee and light snacks available to the public.

DISTRICT OF TAYLOR STAFF ANNOUNCEMENT Mayor & Council Welcomes Melany A de Weerdt Melany has replaced Charlette McLeod as the new Director of Financial Services. She is a converted Northern woman. Originally from Leamington, Ont (Home of Heinz ketchup) but coming to our Taylor team via Slave Lake where she was the Supervisor of Corporate Services.

If you see her and (or) her husband Michel at any municipal function or even around town, we would ask that you give them a big Taylor welcome. She will be easy to spot, as they will be the couple with 5 children in tow (Julia, Alain, Marc, Chloe and Jean-Guy).

We know that she will fit in wonderfully as she is obviously family oriented and very community minded.

We expect great things from her.

SNOW REMOVAL SENIOR CITIZENS DRIVEWAYS The municipality provides snow removal from driveways to senior citizens at no charge. If you are eligible and have not already applied for this service, you may do so by stopping in at the District Office.

Please note the order in which snow is cleared is main roads, sidewalks, secondary roads and then seniors driveways.

IN THE HEAT WITH THE TAYLOR FIRE DEPARTMENT Last year at this time we were discussing that new law that made it illegal to operate cell phones and other electronic devises while driving. It is amazing to see the number of people that continue to talk on their phone while driving!

There are so many hands free options available to drivers, there really is no excuse. Please drive and talk responsibly.

Winter is here and it has been giving us lots of snow and cold temperatures to deal with lately. Make sure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle for those unexpected events that can leave you stranded. A first aid kit is a must have and warm clothes (toques, mittens, snow pants, etc.) sure come in handy. I know I opt for the shoes rather than the big winter boots on occasion, but, I always have my boots and snow pants in the trunk. Visit the PEP website www.pep.bc.ca for a complete list of items to include in your Vehicle Emergency Kit. During your travels, please remember to slow down for road conditions. We have had our fare share of bad road conditions as of late and are thankful when drivers keep their vehicles between the lines and out of the ditches. We’d also ask that “if” you are travelling through an accident scene, slow down and follow directions from those out there directing traffic.

So, are you enjoying Village On A Diet (VOAD)?? It’s really neat to see our small community and people we know on national television. Have you seen yourself yet? How many calls from family and friends have you received? Good job Taylor! We are inspiring the nation to get off the couches, get active, eat healthier and stay healthy.

That being said, I would like to remind everyone that while here, the VOAD crew helped the Taylor Fire Department make up a Firefighter Calendar!!! Firefighters are sporting their new slimmer, trimmer and healthier bodies! Calendars will be available in March, after the show, cause we wouldn’t want to give anything away. You can pre order your calendar by dropping off your Order Form and payment to the District Office, attention Taylor Fire Department Calendar Sales. Rodney Lee Taylor was born on November 3, 1964 and passed away peacefully December 22, 2010 at the Peace River Hospital with his wife and several immediate family members by his side. Rod had a long and valiant fight with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig‘s disease).

Rod married his best friend and long time partner Paula Rishaug at Taylor, BC. Together they had a daughter (Danica) and son (Brayden). Their family was completed with his married daughter (Jennifer), son-in-law (Sam Van Volkingburgh) and 2 grandsons (Adrian & Jaxon). Rod loved to spend time with his family and was very proud of them.

Rod lived most of his life at Taylor BC, with several years in Williams Lake BC, Rainbow Lake AB and was a resident of Berwyn AB at his passing.

Rod was the youngest 16 children born to Jean and John Taylor. He grew up at South Taylor BC and received his education at South and North Taylor Elementary schools, Dr Kearney Jr. High, North Peace Secondary schools in Fort St John BC and graduated at the Rainbow Lake School in Rainbow Lake AB. Rod was outgoing, fun loving and always ready to meet and make a new friend. He had a gift for being able to lighten the mood with a joke or wisecrack when someone was feeling down or willing to lend an ear to anyone having problems and provide advice when asked.

Rod loved sports and especially hockey, softball and golf. He was very competitive and loved to challenge anyone (especially his brother Don) to a round of golf. There was always a great deal of banter about which one made the best shots and who was the better golfer.

Rod‘s occupation was a journeyman Parts Person in the automotive service industry, most recently with Ford Motors and Kal Tire in Fort St John BC and Peace River Ford in Peace River AB. Rod is predeceased by his parents John and Jean, brothers Douglas and Robert, niece Penny Baskott.

Rod will be greatly missed by his wife Paula, daughters Jennifer (Sam) Van Volkinburgh and Danica, son Brayden, grandsons Adrian and Jaxon, 13 siblings (5 brothers and 8 sisters and their spouses), in-laws Ron and Darlene Adam and their 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters and their spouses) and many nieces and nephews.

Rod was laid to rest in the Peace Valley cemetery at Taylor BC on December 30, 2010.

Paula Taylor and family extend a sincere and heartfelt ―Thank you” to everyone for the caring and support during the illness and passing of Rod Taylor. The many expressions of sympathy were greatly appreciated.

Special thanks go to Dr. Louw, Dr. Botha, Dr. Coetzee, the entire nursing staff at the Peace River hospital and all of his homecare workers. Their care and compassion were such a help during our troubled time. We would also like to thank Chapel of Memories of Peace River AB and Bergeron Funeral Services & Crematorium Ltd. of Dawson Creek BC for their assistance and advice which made this stressful time more bearable.

We are truly grateful for the thoughtfulness and kindness from the District of Taylor and the ladies that provided the delicious lunch.

It Snowed …Again.

At this time I am looking out at the snow that is falling… again. It has fallen so much in the last week or so that our driveways are now elevated well above the original level. And with that they get harder to clear, and when they are cleared they are a lot rougher to drive on than when we began.During the last long snow fall I found myself thinking that it didn’t make sense to get out and shovel while more flakes were falling. Call me lazy, call me tired, or maybe call it late when I got home, but for whatever reason I decided not to clear the snow until it stopped falling. Now I have lived in the mountains and we would experience this type of snowfall all winter long - you know the type, when it falls for days straight. It took me a while to admit that if I left it until the snow stopped falling it was a lot more work in the long run. I found that though I was out in the snow a lot more, it was still easier to keep my driveway clear and the ruts or tire mounds down, making it easier all around, if I worked in the midst of the storm.

It struck me that as believers we need to do the same thing in our lives. We can’t actually wait until things get better, settle down, or stop falling in our lives, or else we end up with such a large amount of stuff to remove from our paths that we end up doing less than good job. And most often, when we begin to do less than good job we begin to see only the difficulty of maintaining the path so clear it more quickly, do a poorer job, use 4x4 ability to simply power through, until finally we cannot keep it clear at all so park farther away from our goals.

As believers in Christ we are called to travel our path, no matter what storms are swirling around us. We must work to keep our paths clear, our road as evenly balanced as we can. That only happens through our relationship with God. When we ignore our Saviour, our path gets full – of stress, unhealthy choices, addictions, busy-ness, or just plain “life” - and we find our days get harder to manoeuvre toward our destination. Then we begin to try to cram, trying to smooth out the mounds that throw us off track. We attempt to power our way through life on our own ability and strength.

Both Scripture and life teach us that at some point our ability is overcome, our strength fails, and we are eventually stopped. We end up against a rock, fence, or something else in life that just doesn’t move.

PEACE PASSAGE SKATING CLUB The Peace Passage Skating Club has been having a great season. We have over 60 skaters registered this season. Our coaching staff this year consists of Janice Gibos, Lacey Shallow & Erin Brody.

We had a number of skaters attend the Williston Competition held in Prince George this past October. Being so early in the season it was a great opportunity to get some feed back for our skaters. We are very pleased with the results and have seen vast improvements.

We also had a number of skaters attend a test day in Chetwynd in November. Many of the skaters passed their tests. Special congratulations to Emilee Aitken who passed the Gold level in her Interpretive.

The skaters in Preschool, Canhockey & Canskate are always such fun to watch. These young skaters are progressing very well and many have received at least one or more badges this season.

Upcoming events for our club are the Totem Competiton in Dawson Creek Feb 25-27, Grande Prairie Competition Mar 25-27, Test Day hosted by PPSC Feb 4-6, and our annual Ice Show Mar 13. These events are open to the public.

Taylor Curling Club Friday Night Drop In League!

Are you looking for something for you, your friends, family or children to do on Friday nights? We have the perfect solution for you!

Friday night drop in league is replacing Family League and Mixed League. Its is designed to bring out new and experienced people and introduce them into the world of Curling.

You don't need to have any experience to come out, we encourage new members to give Curling a try. This is a great way to meet new members of our community and visit with ones you haven‘t seen in a while.

Does Friday night not work for you? No problem, we are flexible with which day we offer Drop in League. If Monday or Tuesday works better for you let us know.

If we can pull in 6 family teams or 6 mixed teams we will find a night and dedicate a night to family or mixed league.

We need your feedback Taylor lets get some new curlers out and get our Friday Drop in League back up and running!

Tornado Sighting - Taylor Minor Hockey The climate may or may not be changing, but in Taylor the Tornadoes are multiplying and gaining strength.

There has been almost a 100% increase in minor hockey participants from 2009/2010. And the increase is being felt where it is necessary to build a program. From the bottom up! This year pre-novice has 16 players registered and novice has an astounding 23. There is also both an atom and pee wee team to wear with pride our trademark whirling dervish - the Tasmanian Devil of a Tornado.

Can it be that the word is getting out about Taylor? A small community, a community with a great ice facility and even greater community pride. In Taylor, winning is fun (and each team is winning more than they are losing!) but it is the camaraderie and family that is the most important. A hockey practice isn‘t just a workout and skill development under the tutelage of our fabulous group of volunteer coaches (Chad Rogers, Warren Millner, Darryl Macdonald, Trevor McDonell, etc.), it is an event for the whole family. The little ones play in the kids playground or take advantage of the fact that you can skate on the leisure ice pad all day for $2.00.

And let me tell you, from viewing the leisure ice pad, it is evident that there are many more young recruits waiting in the wings!

It is still early in the season, but there have already been some successes. The novice team participated in the Tumbler Ridge Tournament and came away with the second place trophy - even though only the minimum number of players could attend. Way to go guys and gals!

The same can be said about the pre-novice team which recently returned from the Chetwynd Tournament with the second place trophy - winning their first game 11-0 and their second game 10-4 before running up against the juggernaut that is Chetwynd and losing in the final.

Our hard charging 12 players that make up the Atom team finished their home tournament with a second place trophy. They lost in a 4-3 heart breaker to Dawson Creek. Really though, we don‘t think of it as a loss as much as they just ran out of time! Great going you mighty 12, we expect many more exciting games in the future! The same can be said about the 14 players that make up the Pee Wee team. Without a doubt, while all the Taylor teams might have fewer players than some teams, they more than make up for it with the dedication, hard work and heart that they display. We are proud of each and every one of them!

Last year we did not have a Peewee team because there weren‘t enough players. Not so this year, and the team is strong! Come see them at their upcoming home tournament. It is a weekend of good hockey (with some body checking…)

But was the success on the ice the most notable occurrences at these tournaments? Of course not! What we in Taylor have to say about these tournaments is simply a big THANK YOU to the communities and their many volunteers that made our experiences so special! We only hope we can live up to the precedent you have set as we eagerly await the opportunity to host our friends and neighbours through the Mighty Peace Region!

We would invite all Taylorites, friends and family to come out and cheer on our home teams and their competitors at upcoming tournaments. You will see some great hockey, have fun and be able to demonstrate our Taylor 'SPIRIT' to the region. The upcoming tournaments are: Pre- Novice (5 & 6 yrs old) -

Hockey Update There was some exciting hockey to be had this past weekend (January 22nd and 23rd) as the Taylor teams renewed their rivalry with Dawson Creek. In a hard fought game, the Novice team beat the Canucks 9-6 on the Saturday, while on the same day the pre-novice Tornadoes were edged out by the Dawson Creek Blue Thunder team 8-7. However, Taylor returned the favour the next day in Dawson Creek to their White Lighting team, winning 10-7 in a four period game. (I know, it sounds strange, but Dawson Creek had the ice time and it is just for fun anyway, right!).

As you can tell from the scores, those that weren‘t there to see the games missed out on some pretty competitive and exciting hockey!
