DANCE LOVERS WARM UP FOR ALVIN AILEY STORY BY

Robert Viagas Alvin Ailey Dance Theater will jeté into Tennessee Performing Arts Center for a return engagement of the popular modern dancers April 26-28. Who Was Alvin Ailey? The Texas-born dancer, director, choreographer, and social activist survived a difficult childhood to discover a love for both classical music and African-American music in high school after he moved with his mother to Los Angeles. He went on to become an acclaimed dancer and, later, a choreographer and political activist. He danced on Broadway with Carmen De Lavallade in the Harold Arlen/Truman Capote musical House of Flowers. In 1958 he founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater where he continued to develop

8 | encore his signature dance style, a fusion of ballet, modern dance and jazz dance. The style greatly influenced American dance in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Is Ailey Still Involved with the Company? Born in 1931, Ailey died in 1989, but his spirit continues to inspire the dancers who carry on his legacy. What Is Special About the Alvin Ailey Company? The company specializes in finding and cultivating Black American dance talent with the goal of “expressing the universality of the African-American experience through dance.” What Will Be Performed? The 65th anniversary season tour across the country features four special performances, including the world premieres of Century by Amy Hall Garner and Me, Myself and You by Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish. Performancesalso include the return of audience favorite, Are You in Your Feelings? by Kyle Abraham. Each performance will conclude with Alvin Ailey’s iconic masterpiece, Revelations. Ailey Company Milestones: March 30, 1958: The company gives its first performance. Revelations is recognized as one of the most popular and most performed ballets in the world. 1960: Ailey creates Revelations, which becomes the company’s signature dance. 1962: The company goes on its first international tour to the East Asia and Australia. 1963: The company collaborates with Duke Ellington and Talley Beatty on “My People: First Negro Centennial.” Oct. 30, 1965: Judith Jameson gives her first performance with the company. 1967: The company embarks on a 10-country tour of Africa. 1968: The company gives its first performance at the White House. 1969: The company gives its first performance on Broadway. 1971: Judith Jameson is featured in Ailey’s hit program, Cry. 1972: Ailey choreographs Carmen for the Metropolitan Opera. May 6, 1974: PBS presents the company in Memories and Visions on public television. 1977: The company performs at President Jimmy Carter’s inaugural gala at the White House. 1980: The company relocates to four new studios built to their specifications in a building on Broadway in Manhattan. 1984: Judith Jameson choreographs Divining for the company. 1985: The company tours mainland China. 1988: Ailey awarded Kennedy Center Honors for Lifetime Contribution to American Culture. December 1, 1989: Ailey dies at age 58. Jameson named artistic director of the company. 1996: The company performs at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. 1999: Orlando Bagwell’s documentary A Hymn for Alvin Ailey, inspired by Jamison’s work Hymn, is broadcast nationally on PBS’ “Great Performances.” 2004: U.S. Postal Service honors Ailey with a postage stamp. 2011: Robert Battle takes over as artistic director; Jameson is named Artistic Director Emerita. 2013: The company performs at Lincoln Center for the first time in more than a decade, presenting the world premiere of Four Corners by Ronald K. Brown. 2020: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ailey reinvents the way it reaches audiences globally by creating Ailey All Access, a way for audiences to go online and stream full-length ballets from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Ailey II repertory for the first time, along with classes, conversations, and original short films.
