Les Misérables started its musical life in Paris
in 1980 as a concept album, which became a stage show at Le Palais des Sports, a 4,000-seat arena. It qualified as a huge success, playing for three months to an audience of 200,000 and closing as planned to make way for the next show in the arena’s program. We were thrilled by this unexpected outcome, and believed that it was the end of a uniquely exciting adventure by all standards known to us. Three years later, we received a call from London. During our first meeting to discuss an English version of Les Misérables, producer Cameron Mackintosh told us excitedly, “You do not realize what you have written!” He had heard a few tracks of our original concept album at a friend’s house somewhere in the English countryside. That was 35 years ago. Neither he nor we could have imagined that today, so long after that first encounter, we would be launching yet another production of Les Misérables with a brand-new company and touring North America. An unprecedented success like this cannot and should not be explained by its creators. This

work was born in a state of grace that we were completely unconscious of at that time. Stravinsky once said, “A real creator does not know what he is doing.” We only knew that we needed to do it as much we needed to breathe, eat, and love. We walked through the magical door leading us to the chain of talents — writer James Fenton, writer/directors Trevor Nunn and John Caird, and lyricist Herbert Kretzmer, and, more recently, Laurence Connor and James Powell, who directed this new production under Cameron Mackintosh’s passionate helm. These artists, along with many others, have added 10

invaluable contributions to our original work by brilliantly complementing it throughout the years and helping to bring Les Misérables to maturity. In addition, these contributions ushered both of us into a new world that has been our home ever since. We went on to write Miss Saigon, Martin Guerre, The Pirate Queen, and La Révolution Française, our first rock opera, in 1973, which was the birth certificate of our terminal addiction to musical theater. The spirit of Victor Hugo protects us all. His novel has been spreading its message around the world for 156 years to all nationalities, cultures, and ages. It is astounding to see younger audience members filling theaters worldwide for

a show that was written before they were born. Too often, musicals age with their audience. In this case, we are the only ones who age while, onstage, Jean Valjean, Cosette, Marius, the student revolt, and its ideals are as youthful as ever. Unfortunately, so are the problems of injustice and misery, which are present in the heart of the novel. While attending a rehearsal at the Barbican Theatre in 1985, where the first English incarnation of what would become the definitive version of our musical was mounted, Alain said “I hope that we will still be here in two months.” Many people thought we would not. Incredibly, the marquee of Les Misérables’ London home, the Queens Theatre, proudly proclaims to passersby: “33 years and counting!”

Les Facts • Les Misérables has been produced in 44 countries and translated into 22 different languages. • Each performance of Les Misérables requires 392 complete costumes and 31 wigs. • On 22 January 2010, the show celebrated its 10,000th performance in London. • Contrary to a common misunderstanding, the musical is NOT set during the French Revolution of 1789. The action begins in 1815 and follows events over the next two decades, including the Paris Uprising of 1832. • Susan Boyle shocked audiences when she sang Fantine’s “I Dreamed A Dream” on the popular TV show “Britain’s Got Talent.” The clip of her performance quickly became one of the most watched videos on YouTube. • Victor Hugo started writing Les Misérables, upon which the show is based, in 1829. The book was not published until 1862 — totaling 33 years to complete the masterpiece. • Songwriter Alain Boublil was watching a performance of Oliver! when he envisioned a similar ragamuffin — little Gavroche — as depicted in Victor Hugo’s novel, which sparked the initial inspiration for what would eventually become Les Misérables. • The original London cast of Les Misérables included Broadway legend Patti LuPone as Fantine.

Monté J. Howell Before he takes the Fox Theatre stage with the U.S. National Tour of Les Misérables, Encore Atlanta caught up with Georgia native Monté J. Howell to learn about his Atlanta roots, his dream role, and life on tour.
Encore Atlanta: Where did you grow up? Monté J. Howell: Duluth, Georgia EA: What high school did you attend? MJH: Peachtree Ridge High School EA: Of all your Atlanta productions, which was your favorite? Why? MJH: My favorite Atlanta production that I performed in would have to be Ragtime at the Atlanta Lyric Theatre. Ragtime was my first production as an Atlanta actor and I made several friends who’ve become family over the years. It was a successful production and a nice introduction to the scene. That production is tied with Shrek at the Alliance Theatre! EA: Is there an Atlanta theatre that you haven’t worked with, but would like to? MJH: Atlanta has so many wonderful theatres and creatives. It’s hard to choose one! I’d like an opportunity to work with Brian Clowdus at Serenbe Playhouse. He’s so creative! City Springs Theatre Company is also on my list! They’re a newer operation and I enjoy working with Brandt Blocker, their Artistic Director! EA: What is the best part of performing with the Les Misérables national tour? MJH: My favorite part of performing on the Les Misérables national tour is... Truly, this job is a dream come true! EA: What is the hardest part of performing with the Les Misérables national tour? MJH: I find the hardest part of you tour is being away from the people I love. However, my cast mates have become family. EA: What advice would you give to aspiring thespians and performers? MJH: I’d tell any aspiring performer to remember why they perform and to invest in learning their craft. EA: If you could play any role in any show, what would it be? MJH: If I could play any role in any show, it would HAVE to be Harold Hill in The Music Man. EA: Who is your theatre role mode or icon? MJH: I have learned from and been inspired by too many performers to count, but the person who still influences me the most is Norm Lewis! He’s played many of my favorite roles, his sound is so smooth, and his career has opened several doors for performers of color. SYNOPSIS ACT ONE PROLOGUE: 1815, DIGNE After 19 years on the chain gang, Jean Valjean finds that the ticket-of-leave he must display condemns him to be an outcast. Only the Bishop of Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by the police and is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him. Valjean decides to start his life anew. 1823, MONTREUIL-SUR-MER Eight years have passed and Valjean, having broken his parole and changed his name to Monsieur Madeleine, has become a factory owner and Mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, has a secret illegitimate child. When the other women discover this, they demand her dismissal. Desperate for money to pay for medicines for her daughter, Fantine sells her locket, her hair, and then joins the whores in selling herself. Utterly degraded, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when the ‘Mayor’ arrives and demands she be taken to the hospital instead. The Mayor then rescues a man pinned beneath a cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of convict 24601 Jean Valjean, who, he says, has just been recaptured. Valjean, unable to see an innocent man go to prison, confesses that he is prisoner 24601. At the hospital, Valjean promises the dying Fantine to find and look after her daughter Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean escapes. 1823, MONTFERMEIL Cosette has been lodged with the Thénardiers, who horribly abuse her while indulging their own daughter, Éponine. Valjean pays the Thénardiers to let him take her away to Paris. 1832, PARIS Nine years later, there is unrest in the city because of the likely demise of the popular leader General Lamarque, the only man left in the government who shows any feeling for the poor. A street gang led by Thénardier and his wife sets upon Jean Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who does not recognise Valjean until he has gone. The Thénardiers’ daughter Éponine, who

is secretly in love with the student Marius, reluctantly agrees to help him find Cosette, with whom he has fallen in love. News of General Lamarque’s death circulates in the city and a group of politically-minded students stream out into the streets to whip up support for a revolution. Cosette is consumed by thoughts of Marius, with whom she has fallen in love. Éponine brings Marius to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by her father’s gang to rob Valjean’s house. Valjean, convinced it was Javert lurking outside his house, tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country. ACT TWO The students prepare to build the barricade. Marius, noticing that Éponine has joined the insurrection, sends her away with a letter to Cosette, which is intercepted by Valjean. Éponine decides to rejoin her love at the barricade. The barricade is built and the revolutionaries defy an army warning to give up or die. Javert is exposed as a police spy. In trying to return to the barricade, Éponine is killed. Valjean arrives at the barricade in search of Marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert but instead lets him go. The students settle down for a night on the barricade and, in the quiet of the night, Valjean prays to God to save Marius. The next day the rebels are all killed. Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious Marius. After meeting Thénardier, who is robbing the corpses of the rebels, he comes across Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver the young man to the hospital. Javert lets Valjean go and, his unbending principles of justice having been shattered by Valjean’s own mercy, he kills himself. Unaware of the identity of his rescuer, Marius recovers in Cosette’s care. Valjean confesses the truth of his past to Marius and insists he must go away. At Marius and Cosette’s wedding, the Thénardiers try to blackmail Marius. Thénardier says Cosette’s ‘father’ is a murderer and as proof produces a ring which he stole from the corpse the night the barricade fell. It is Marius’s own ring and he realizes it was Valjean who rescued him that night. He and Cosette go to Valjean where Cosette learns for the first time of her own history before the old man dies.

CAMERON MACKINTOSH (Producer) has produced the three longest-running musicals in history: Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and CATS. His acclaimed new production of Miss Saigon is now touring North America and the U.K. while his co-production with Disney of Mary Poppins returns to London’s West End in 2019. Cameron enjoys producing new versions of classic musicals such as Oliver!, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma!, Carousel, Follies and most recently, his newly rewritten version of Half A Sixpence. In 2013, in conjunction with Working Title Films and Universal, Cameron produced the Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning film of Les Misérables. He owns eight London theatres including the Victoria Palace which, after a spectacular refurbishment, is now home to the award-winning musical Hamilton, coproduced with Jeffrey Seller. Cameron was knighted in 1996; recently was the first British producer to be elected to the Theater Hall of Fame; and is the recipient of the 2017 Stephen Sondheim Award. Music Theatre International, the world’s largest owner of secondary rights of many of the greatest musicals ever written, is now one of Cameron’s companies. HERBERT KRETZMER (Lyrics) was a London journalist when Cameron Mackintosh invited him to write the lyrics for Les Misérables epochal West End production in 1985. Combining twin careers as a journalist/lyricist, he contributed regular lyrics for the BBC’s famous satire series “That Was the Week That Was” and had also written lyrics for the French singer Charles Aznavour (“Yesterday When I Was Young,” “She,” etc.). It was Kretzmer’s work with Aznavour which led to Cameron’s invitation. Herbert Kretzmer was born in South Africa to immigrant parents from Lithuania. He now lives in London with his (American) wife Sybil. JAMES FENTON (Additional Material) has worked as a political and literary journalist, drama critic and war correspondent. He won the Newdigate Prize for Poetry, was made Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1983, Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1994 to 1999 and awarded the Queen’s Medal for Poetry in 2007. FOR YOUR INFORMATION THE THEATER A fully restored 1929 “movie palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multipurpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballets, comedies, concerts, movies and private corporate events. PRIVATE EVENTS The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, accommodating 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. To book your “Fabulous Fox” evening, please call 404-881-2100 or visit us at www.foxtheatre.org. TICKET OFFICE The Fox Theatre Ticket Office is in the arcade entrance to the theater. It is open for walk-up ticket sales 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. It is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. On event days, the Ticket Office opens two hours before show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour before show time. Tickets for all performances may be purchased online at www.foxtheatre.org, at all Ticket Alternative outlets and at all Atlanta-area Whole Foods Markets, by calling 855-285-8499 or visiting the Fox Theatre Ticket Office in person during regular box-office hours. CONCESSIONS Concession stands are located in the Spanish Room, main lobby and on the mezzanine lobby level. ersey Boys, the Tony® and Grammy® Awardwinning Broadway musical about the spectacular rise of pop icons Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, has been seen worldwide by over 24 million people, all of them captivated by the dazzling recreations of classic 1960s hits such as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” – set within a gripping rags-to-riches story. But for many, the show’s most unforgettable moment comes when Frankie Valli, as lead singer, decides to enter into a business partnership with the group’s keyboardist and songwriter, Bob Gaudio. “So should we have somebody draw up a contract?” Gaudio asks. Frankie responds by offering his hand. “You want a contract? Here – a Jersey contract.” Their handshake becomes a pact, cementing a relationship that has endured for close to 50 years. “The story of the friendship between Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio is something that just makes I-2
my heart melt every time I think about it,” says Pat Prescott, popular radio host on Los Angeles’ 94.7 The Wave and a longtime Jersey Boys fan. “When I think about that handshake and what it has meant,” Ms. Prescott observes, “how we as a society have so much gotten away from those values of real friendship, of loyalty, of consistency in relationships – it stands out to me tremendously.” In Jersey Boys, with a book by Tony Award® nominees Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, four young men persevere against incredible odds to fight their way to the peak of stardom. Later, they stand together through high times and devastating lows. The show’s universal themes of courage, friendship and survival have inspired a diverse legion of new Broadway fans, many of them men. “This is a man’s show,” asserts Ms. Prescott. “Sometimes when I go to the theater, especially musicals, my boyfriend says, ‘Why don’t you take one of your girlfriends?’ And when I first went to

Jersey Boys, I did go with a girlfriend. Afterward, I told my boyfriend, ‘You have got to see this show. You’re going to love it.’ And he actually went with me twice.” Other husbands and boyfriends have become just as enthused. Before Jersey Boys, Dale Skarl was a selfdescribed “Broadway novice.” Now, having seen the show more than 50 times across the U.S. and Canada, he understands why it has earned such a following with “the guys.” “It’s because of the camaraderie between the four main characters,” Skarl states. “The story is about men and men’s success and their triumph over failure. Maybe it’s like the team aspect that goes back to sports, or brotherhood and fraternity. It’s a story about not giving up.” Together Dale and his wife, Susie, administer the Jersey Boys fan site and blog. They fell in love with the show around the time it opened on Broadway, in 2005.
“To be honest, I was the one who dragged Dale to Jersey Boys,” explains Susie, “because I’ve been a big fan of The Four Seasons forever. I went just because of loving the music, growing up with it.” At first, Susie recalls, the experience seemed like “your typical fun night at the theater, people having a nice time.” But then, she says, something unexpected happened. “When I actually watched the people in the audience, whether they were 60 years old or 22, everybody was bopping in their seats. I don’t know if they had a rough week at work, or else they were going back in time to high school, but you would have thought they didn’t have a care in the world. If they could have gotten up and danced they would have.” “We’ve noticed this on multiple occasions, with many different audiences,” Dale adds. “You’ll look over to your left or right, and you’ll see someone

In the end everybody’s on their feet and everyone loves the show.” “You’re thinking you’re going to hear a bunch of great hits, and you do,” says Susie, referring to the Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons classics performed in the show (the music is by Bob Gaudio with lyrics by Bob Crewe). “But then, the story is so interesting and compelling that you want to come back. It’s a classic story of success that resonates with everybody. You really do get something out of it each time you see it.” It’s an observation shared by Frankie Valli himself. “Jersey Boys is a true story,” says the legendary singer, whose sterling falsetto has graced dozens of hits, on his own and with The Four Seasons. “And there are things in the show that, even for me, every time I go back, I pick up on. Some things are like that – you can’t get enough.” Kara Tremel, who has performed several roles in the national tour of Jersey Boys, credits multiple TonyAward winning director Des McAnuff (Big River, The Who’s Tommy, The Farnsworth Invention) with creating a fast-paced, visually engaging production that attracts theatergoers who were not born when The Four Seasons’ hits dominated the airwaves. “For young people it’s an exciting type of show to see,” Tremel observes. “The way Des directed it is so I-4
quick: the set moves with the actors, lighting shoots over to another side of the stage, and we’re in a totally different scene in a matter of seconds. It’s good for a younger generation that needs that kind of quick pace. And whatever your age, you can’t not like this music.” Pat Prescott, the radio personality, grew up in a household where music of all kinds was respected and enjoyed. As someone who has loved Broadway ever since her father took her to see the hit musical, Purlie, in the early 1970s, she understands how theater has the potential to reach across generational divides. “This current generation has grown up with a lot of media thrown in their faces,” Prescott remarks. “It may be hard to get them excited about some music from the 1960s or early 70s, but when you put the whole package together – songs and story – into this incredible show, I don’t think anybody can resist it. I noticed every time I went, you would see people of all ages, all races. Everybody was in there.” The acclaimed 2014 film version of Jersey Boys, directed by Clint Eastwood, has grossed nearly $70 million internationally, but it hasn’t stopped fans and first-timers from packing houses on Broadway, on tour, in Las Vegas and around the world. “There’s so much going on that you need to see it at least two or three times, just so you don’t miss anything,” Prescott believes. “I wish everybody could see it. This show is really, really special.”

BOB GAUDIO (Composer) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15, for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of The Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film of Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (“Silence Is Golden”), the Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”) and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for The Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longest-charted singles (54 weeks), “Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential music-maker.” To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership...on a handshake. BOB CREWE (Lyricist). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writer-producers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957, they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie” – all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesley Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film Barbarella. Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with “Music to Watch Girls By”. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. Food Access to the Marquee Club provides visitors with a pre-show meal. The seasonally rotating menu includes hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, a mezze table, action station, and desserts. In March, the club’s delicious offerings may include braised short ribs, stonefire flat bread, fried calamari, and amaretto cheesecake. Drinks Five bars throughout the Marquee Club serve specialty cocktails, soft drinks, beer, wine, and coffee. With two covered and one indoor bar on the terrace, the club’s experienced bartenders can shake up a signature cocktail for guests regardless of the weather. Views Of the 10,000 square feet of space of the Marquee Club, there is a patch on the roof that may be the most coveted place to stand. On the main terrace, there is an exquisite view of the theatre’s marquee set against Peachtree Street going north and the Georgian Terrace Hotel across the street. Open air seating begs visitors to soak in the Atlanta air while enjoying their food and cocktails. The rooftop arcade terrace holds another bar and covered seating, ensuring guests can enjoy themselves outdoors even in rainy weather.

INSTA-famous This is undoubtedly the most popular piece of real estate in the entire Club, made famous by guests who use the iconic Fox marquee as a backdrop for their selfies and other social media posts.

Décor The architectural style throughout the club draws from myriad styles, including Moorish, Turkish, Mediterranean, Arabic, and Art Nouveau. The main level chandelier features over 200 hand blown glass pieces from California and handmade lamps from Dubai. Also found on the main level is a hand painted mural by the London-based company de Gournay. Moving from the main level to the mezzanine provides exquisite surroundings both by stairs or by elevator. The main staircase leads both to the mezzanine level and to the terrace level, guiding visitors with bright light, gold trimmings, and beautiful tiling reflecting on each step. Visitors on the mezzanine level can look out to the main level below through laser cut screens of Moroccan design. Chairs and benches invite visitors to lounge and relax in the mid-level area with the mezzanine bar nearby. When arriving on the terrace level by the grand gold staircase, visitors are greeted by beautiful green tiling. These jewel-toned, uniquely shaped tiles are just one example of the club’s collection of eye-catching tile and stone. The stone found in the Marquee Club was sourced from three continents, and includes blue bahia, a granite from Brazil on bar tops, and an Italian mosaic tile called crema marfil. The design was created by Atlanta-based architecture firm Lord Aeck Sargent. Tucker’s Corn Upholstery Company created 71 pieces of custom furniture for the club. Janus et Cie, maker of luxury outdoor furniture, supplied the outdoor seating for the terrace levels. Contributions from almost 50 other Georgia-based vendors can be seen throughout the ornate décor.

Atlanta’s affection for tacos will find nurturing at the new Tuza Taco on the westside in the Berkley Park neighborhood. Owner Jason Sherman cooks up Mexican street-food-style tacos, all little $4 explosive flavor grenades with hyper-fresh ingredients. Carnitas (slow cooked pork), tempura-Modelo beer fried fish, skirt steak with chimichurri sauce, wild-caught American shrimp and chicken with cotija cheese, are a few of the varieties that you can wrap in a soft tortilla (corn or flour) or a hard, crunchy corn shell. Housemade salsa, guacamole, and queso with roasted jalapeño are great starters and are emblematic of the attention to detail put into preparation. Cervezas and margaritas are a-flowing

and with a little spring sunshine, the kiddies and pets should join to enjoy the outdoor patio and small yard. Italophiles willing to venture off the beaten path will find amore at the new Adalina off Northside Parkway by the Chattahoochee River and the new North Atlanta High School campus. Drive up the hill to the Post Riverside apartment complex and arrive at an immaculately landscaped town square. There, former Empire State South chef Josh Hopkins is creating exciting renditions of Italian food classics. Octopus arancini, pork and ricotta meatballs, lobster risotto and blue crab pappardelle are a few of the modern spins he has applied to time-tested Italian staple dishes. And, if you are craving pizza, try their artisan Neapolitan-inspired pies with a wonderful, chewy crust and toppings like bacon, Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, and soppressata salami. The expansion of Buford Highway eateries continues with Dish Korean Cuisine, a handsome new space from Hahn and Barbara Lee that sits next to the hugely popular Food Terminal. The restaurant is bright and clean, and the menu is in English and Korean with photos of each dish (something not ubiquitous on BuHi). Dish proudly takes a modern spin on classic dishes including a crispy potato pancake made with seafood and chives, beef ox-bone soup, and a raised pompano with spicy house sauce. Dish also offers some Korean fusion with burgers and tacos that will please both a Korean food devotee or a beginner.

After buzz-worthy success as a pop-up concept, Atlanta favorite Ronald Hsu has locked in the space on Dekalb Avenue formerly occupied by Radial Cafe for a formal brick-and-mortar location called Lazy Betty. Hsu, the star of Netflix’s “The Final Table,” earned his cooking stripes at Michelin-starred Le Bernardin and Le Colonial in New York City. Lazy Betty will feature both a tasting menu option and à la carte options. Expect variations on globally-inspired cuisine that are, according to the Lazy Betty website, “guided by exquisite ingredients and a thoughtful approach where every part contributes to the whole.” Could it be the wave of the future? Not one, but three “virtual” delivery-only restaurants are coming to Sandy Springs. Out of one shared kitchen will come a meat-and-three concept, Fatbacks; a gourmet burger concept, Top Bun; and healthyeating concept, Salad Hippie. It’s unclear which delivery services (i.e. Door Dash, Uber Eats, et al.) will handle the transportation or just how far-reaching their availability will be, but at this moment when many just want to “Netflix and chill,” maybe a virtual restaurant is just what the Instagram generation needs. After much speculation on what would fill the void left by the defunct Decatur legend Cakes & Ale, Chef Terry Koval has

The Deer & The Dove will serve “new” American cuisine and Side Bar will focus on grab-and-go breakfast and lunch sandwiches, bagels, and coffee. At night, Side Bar will transition to a simple bar with natural wines, cocktails, and small plates.

Also speaking of big shoes to fill, the hallowed ground formerly inhabited by Anne Quatrano’s Bacchanalia off Howell Mill will soon welcome Redbird, a new effort from Zeb Stevenson and Ross Jones, formerly of Watershed. Redbird will cook up “free-spirited cuisine” that will be “focused and balanced with fresh flavors and a reinvigorated commitment to time-honored cooking techniques” according to What Now Atlanta.

FOX FUN FACTS The Fox Theatre Ballrooms The Egyptian Ballroom, Grand Salon, and Spanish Room were all originally Shriner meeting spaces. Here are some other fun facts: • The Egyptian Ballroom was reserved for Shriner ceremonies and celebrations and the adjoining Grand Salon served as their library. • The 7,500-square foot Egyptian Ballroom’s original floor is hard rock maple. A custom-designed carpet with Egyptian symbols of the afterlife and resurrection now protects the maple floor.
• Depicted on the Egyptian Ballroom’s balcony is a scarab, or dung beetle, which was the symbol for the sun god Ra, who was thought to ward off evil. It is surrounded by the wings of Osiris, god of the underworld, afterlife, and resurrection. • Above the Egyptian Ballroom’s stage stretch the gilded and glazed wings of Osiris. A plaster intaglio panel of Ramses II subduing an enemy is the focal point of the stage.

• In the 1970s, the walls of the Egyptian Ballroom were covered with several coats of paint obscuring the original stenciled designs. As years of paint were removed, vivid Egyptian symbols for life and rebirth were revealed.
