I

t really does snow onstage in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.

But it’s not a gimmick. In this case, snowfall is obligatory.

The show’s title promises it, the plot’s resolution depends on it, and Irving Berlin’s words and melodies yearn for it.

But making it snow onstage is no easy matter, especially when all the characters keep complaining about the unseasonably “balmy” December weather in Vermont. And it takes a heap of snow to make a truly white Christmas.

So, enter the snow man.

“We all came into this knowing that it has to snow onstage,” says lighting designer Ken Billington. “It’s White Christmas. That’s the ending. Everyone knows. They’re going to open the barn doors and see the snow.”

After more than 25 years of lighting the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular — kick lines, flying sleighs, blizzards and more — Billington knows all the behind-thescenes tricks, but he’s still never impervious to the simple magic of snowfall or the earnest truth in a classic tune.

“I always get choked up,” he says, “every time I see this ending.”

The White Christmas creative team is led by Tony Awardwinning director Walter Bobbie, who cut his teeth on musical revivals and reconstructions as artistic director of City Center’s Encores! series. That’s where his strippeddown Chicago revival began and, under Billington’s lights, has been on Broadway ever since. The book’s writers, David Ives and Paul Blake, are devotees of adaptation as an art form. Anna Louizos’ calling card is Avenue Q. Costume designer Carrie Robbins, who has 30 Broadway shows to her credit, completes the team.

Back to the snow.

When the barn doors open and audiences see snow for the first time, the gang has just saved the general’s inn from bankruptcy, lovers have reconciled and the big musical revue that was rehearsing in the barn is SRO (a real MGM let’s-put-on-a-show spectacular with an A-list budget and a soundstage full of scenery).

For the show’s first snowfall, the White Christmas team decided that pure stagecraft served the scene best. Simple, effective and artful — nothing slick or high tech. The team chose what’s perhaps the most old-fashioned way to do it.

When the first actor to play Simon Legree chased Little Eva through the blizzard in The King and I a hundred years ago, the storm was probably created by a snow bag. White Christmas uses the same technology.

The snow comes from a company called Artistry in Motion in Van Nuys, Calif. It’s a confetti mixture of tissue paper cut into a half-and-half mixture of half-inch and three-quarters-inch squares, which gives a more natural look to the snowfall. The paper petals are packed into the snow bag — a long tube of fabric, cut with slits and positioned upstage of the barn doors — just out of view of the audience.

Offstage, two ropes hang from one end of the snow bag, which is longer than the barn door is wide, so the snow will fall evenly across the huge opening.

Stagehands positioned at either end of the stage tug the ropes back and forth to shake the snow squares out of the holes in the bag. It’s tiring work — switch and repeat, again and again, until it’s time for the snow to stop. It snows for about five minutes at each performance, and although the snow is recycled as much as it can be, White Christmas

requires about 10 pounds of confetti per week.

Upstage a bit, Louizos designed a country landscape lit by moonlight. When the drop is illuminated from behind, it glows. It’s a classic scenic technique that predates 1950s showbiz chic, combined with the kind of “Hollywood does Broadway” production number usually seen only in movies.

When the full cast sings “White Christmas” and the audience joins in, well, that’s a holiday classic. And the perfect setup for an upbeat curtain call.

After the company bows and the curtain falls, the leads head downstage and launch into a reprise of “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” The curtain goes up on a whole new set. It’s snowing again, and the company reunites amid a stage full of flurries, poised for another avalanche of song and dance. As they start to sing, it begins to snow.

Everywhere.

Billington wants to preserve some of the secrets of this final effect, but admits using a high-tech Snowmaster 3000, a foam-snow machine developed for theme-park attractions and nightclub parties.

“The machine has output settings from 1 to 10,” he says.

“During the last eight bars of the song, we boost the output from ‘flurry’ (No. 3) to ‘blizzard.’”

It’s creates a perfect state of mind with which to accept and embrace the season for at least a month or so. :: This piece was originally written for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Songwriter, performer, theater owner, music publisher and soldier, he wrote scores to more than a dozen Broadway musicals (including Annie Get Your Gun) and dozens of Hollywood movie musicals. His more than 1,200 songs include “White Christmas,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” “Easter Parade,” “Always,” “Blue Skies,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” and “God Bless America.” Berlin’s love and generosity to his country is legendary, and through several ongoing foundations, including the God Bless America Fund, he donated millions of dollars in royalties to Army emergency relief and the Boy and Girl Scouts.

Christmas in Helen | 2 hours north of Atlanta With the “lighting of the village,” the most wonderful time of the year begins Nov. 23 in Helen, Ga., on the southern edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Live entertainment begins at 2 p.m. that day in the town center; the Bavarian-themed village lights up at 6 p.m.

The year-round population of this decidedly quirky community is about 550, but Helen is billed as the thirdmost visited place in Georgia, following only Atlanta and Savannah, and attracting 1.5 million travelers each year.

The annual Christmas parade (2 p.m. Dec. 8) includes live bands, Tennessee walking horses, Bernese mountain dogs and floats like a “sleigh” carrying Santa and Mrs. Claus. A children’s lantern parade steps off later that day. Kids can decorate paper lanterns starting at 4 p.m. and parade through Helen at 5 p.m. to the Festhalle for a bonfire and s’mores.

Christmas at Biltmore in Asheville, N.C., stretches from early November through Jan. 6.

Christmas at the Biltmore | 3+ hours For a splurge, we suggest the Biltmore in Asheville, N.C. The 250-room French Renaissance mansion was built as a country home for George Vanderbilt III (grandson of industrialist Cornelius Vanderbilt) in the 1890s.

The 175-sq. ft. chateau has 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and took 100 workers six years to complete, a feat accomplished in time for Christmas 1895. The holiday hoopla here in the Blue Ridge Mountains has become so popular that Christmas at Biltmore begins in early November and continues through Jan. 6.

This year’s theme is “The Art of Christmas,” so you can bet the estate’s design team has gone all out. At Biltmore Winery, some 7,000 globe-shaped ornaments dangle from the ceiling. The goal is to make visitors feel like they’re inside an enormous bottle of bubbly.

The gothic “house,” showcasing the Vanderbilt family’s original art and furnishings, features more than 100 Christmas trees, including a 35-foot-tall Fraser fir. The front lawn shimmers with a 55-foot Norway spruce and 35 glistening evergreens.

The estate, a National Historic Landmark, includes gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmstead. The Inn on Biltmore Estate offers four-star lodging. The more casual Village Hotel in Antler Hill Village is steps from shops, restaurants, the winery (free tastings), a creamery and more.

The village glows from 5:30 p.m. to midnight daily.

Know that you can bask in the holiday spirit here throughout December, even though Thomasville’s 34th annual Victorian Christmas runs only 6-9 p.m. Dec. 13-14.

Victorian Christmas is a throwback to Thomasville’s heyday, “when warm cheer was spread to all, and evening strolls to hear carols sung made the holiday complete,” says Bonnie Hays of the Thomasville Visitors Center. “I can’t tell you how many out-of-towners keep coming back because our Christmas town warms their hearts and souls.”

A Living Nativity is staged by the First Baptist Church.

Horse-drawn carriage rides pass by the town’s storied 337-yearold oak, which glows with luminaries. Musicians, storytellers, stilt walkers and Victorian fire performers travel brick-paved streets. Choral groups perform, chestnuts are roasted and marshmallows toasted. This year, festivalgoers can get a keepsake photo of themselves posing with a Victorian-era hotair balloon.

Shopping and dining possibilities include the Fuzzy Goat, a yarn and knitting boutique; Southlife Supply Co., known nationally for its leather goods, including belts and purses; The Bookshelf for books, toys and cool gifts; the intimate Signature Clothing Lounge for clothes and accessories; Liam’s for upscale New American food; and the fun, laid-back Sweet Grass Dairy Restaurant & Cheese Shop for firstrate artisan cheeses, platters and craft beer. Dickens of a Christmas | 4 hours northwest of Atlanta Dust off great-grandpa’s top hat. You’ve got a dandy chance to show it off at the 34th annual Dickens of a Christmas in the postcard-pretty town of Franklin, Tenn., just this side of Nashville. This year’s event runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Dec. 8 and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 9.

The city’s Victorian architecture is an ideal backdrop for the days when local shops were where you found holiday gifts.

Wander the Main Street area, and you may bump into Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim or other costumed Dickensian players. They’ll interact with you, delight the kids with treats and won’t break character.

Dozens of specialty shops step up their game for what some call the largest outdoor Christmas festival in middle Tennessee.

Enticements include live music and dance performances plus pockets of entertainment here and there, artisan demonstrations, 100 vendors selling their wares and plenty of food trucks.

Kids can take pony and train rides and play Victorian-era games. At day’s end, everyone is invited to the town square to sing carols.

Festivalgoers are encouraged to wear Victorian clothes or just accessorize in some way. Along with gramps’ top hat, you may want to pull out your ugliest Christmas sweater. There’s a contest at the First Citizens National Bank’s booth.

The Dickens fest is free, but a few attractions ask a small fee.

Yes, Texas-based Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House has joined metro Atlanta’s beefy crowd. Find it in the newly completed Perimeter Park Center in Dunwoody, home to State Farm’s headquarters. The Del Frisco space is Texas-sized, an 11,000-sq. ft. stunner by the Johnson Studio that begins with a dramatic ascending entrance and uplighting that illuminates a tunnel of 2,200 wine bottles. Another 2,500 wine bottles “float” around the space in a sprawling exposed cellar.

The menu features USDA Prime wet- and dry-aged cuts, including the namesake “Double Eagle Steak,” a 32-ounce, 45-day dry-aged, double bone-in prime ribeye. Carnivores can also choose a rare marbleized Wagyu steak — Japanese A5, Australian Wagyu or a cut from Rosewood, Texas. Double Eagle also flies in seafood daily, has an ocean of fancy wine and cocktails, and its butter cake is one of the best non-chocolate desserts around. …

If you can’t get your claws on enough fresh lobster, head to Lenox Square and Cousins Maine Lobster. Two cousins from the Northeast started the lobster-centric food truck four years ago in Los Angeles. They soon found themselves on national TV, pitching their idea on “Shark Tank,” the ABC competition show for budding entrepreneurs. They landed enough funding to go nationwide.

Strap on your bib and order lobster rolls — Maine-style (chilled with a touch of mayo) or Connecticut-style (served warm with butter and lemon), plus lobster tacos, a lobster B.L.T., lobster grilled cheese, lobster tots and lobster bisque. Clams, crab and shrimp also make quick menu appearances but clearly,

SIMMERING The redeveloping Colony Square in Midtown Atlanta has landed its showcase restaurant. Developers of the $160 million renovation say the Italian eatery Iselle Kitchen + Bar will open in fall 2019. Look for ricotta-stuffed squash blossoms, speck-and-blueberry bruschetta, seared Ora king salmon and burrata gnocchi. Iselle will join a 28,000-sq. ft. food hall and several other new restaurants as Colony Square tries to reassert its relevance in a sea of new intown mixed-use properties. …

At King Barbecue in Alpharetta's Avalon district, the barbecue choices are many, and there's banana pudding for dessert.

Le Colonial, an upscale French-Vietnamese spot, comes to the Shops At Buckhead in spring 2019 from the owner groups behind Le Bilboquet (also in the Shops) and Umi (on Peachtree Road). Le Colonial is already open in Chicago, Houston, New York and San Francisco. It features “romantic, turn-ofthe-century, tropical environments.” Atlanta’s version will reportedly be the most modern interpretation of the concept.

Look for such specialties as Bo Luc Lac Shaking Beef, crispy wild-caught red snapper and spicy yellowfin tuna tartare with soy caviar and taro chips. …

Ryan Gravel, the godfather of the Atlanta BeltLine, will open Aftercar, a restaurant on the Eastside Trail. Look for it in the still-to-come Telephone Factory Lofts. Details on Aftercar’s theme and menu aren’t clear, but it’s described as a “retrofuture BeltLine social house.” A late-spring, early-summer 2019 opening is projected. Aftercar will sit adjacent to, and share profits with, Gravel’s Generator, a nonprofit urban development think tank.

TOAST Say so long to Cheeky, the Mexican taqueria and sports bar that shuttered on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs after about two years of cervezas and soccer. But worry not, a Greek eatery named Santorini will soon take its place. Santorini will be a full-service Greek taverna from George Tselios, who owns Gyro City Grill and is a founder/former partner in the Landmark and Marietta diners. …

Midtown’s wild and wacky party bar, Flip Flops, purveyor of frozen daiquiris named Jet Fuel, the Gator Hater and Horne Hurricane, has had its last call. The 1920s Crescent Avenue bungalow was, to some, a shrine to tacky, beachy fun. To others, it was an agonizingly cheesy eyesore.

And finally, the 50-year staple S&S Cafeteria has closed its last Atlanta location. FOX FUN FACTS A day of snowflakes, Mickey Mouse, the Mighty Mo and memories The Fox Theatre had its grand opening on a snowy Christmas Day in 1929, just two months after the stock market crash that led to the Great Depression. The crowd stretched around the block.

Atlantans saw the theater as an escape from worry about their futures. Here are a few other facts and figures that stretch back to that day almost 89 years ago.

• Opening-day tickets for shows cost 15 cents to 75 cents.

• The bejeweled “Aladdin” curtain commissioned by Eve Leo Fox, movie mogul William Fox’s wife, sparkled with rhinestones and sequins. It depicts a mosque and Moorish riders, and cost $30,000 to make (more than $400,000 today).

• Iris Vining Wilkins, a tiny woman, played the Mighty Mo organ. Enrico Leide, a concert cellist and conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (1920-30) led the Fox Grand Orchestra in “This Shrine of Beauty.”

• The Fanchon and Marco Sunkist Beauties danced “Beach Nights,” with 12 Atlanta girls called “Peaches.”

Also performing were the Japanese acrobatic trio Kitaros, the comedy team Davis and LaRue, the dance team of Ray Bradley and Evian, and the sister singing group Jean and Jeanette.

• Snowflakes, aka bleached cornflakes, fell from the ceiling at the end of the screening.
