t’s been seven years since The Book of Mormon opened on Broadway and 2½ years since its missionaries last tapdanced their way into town and the Fox Theatre. In that span, the careers of many original Mormons have taken off. Tony nominees Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad (the original Elders Price and Cunningham), composer Robert Lopez (Frozen) and director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw (Mean Girls, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Prom) have all become go-to guys. Rannells, a two-time Tony nominee, is on Broadway in

He’s played King George in Hamilton and Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch and made his mark on HBO’s Girls, playing Elijah Krantz, an ex of creator Lena Dunham’s Hannah. Gad has voiced the role of Olaf in the Frozen movie and was LeFou in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. He’s been attached as a writer of a possible Gilligan’s Island movie and rumored to be the top choice for Seymour in a Little Shop of Horrors movie remake. been pitching himself to play the Penguin in the Batman film franchise. But that was then, this is now. We’re pretty familiar with those smiling, doorbell-ringing lads and their snappy waves as they say, “Hello!” We also know that Elder Price won’t be dispatched to Orlando as he wishes and will go to an AIDS-stricken village in Uganda instead. So why do we keep coming back? “It’s the laughter,” says Ron Bohmer, who’s toured with

"So if we can get the chance to have that really good time all over again, then we want to. "You can’t relive your wedding day, except maybe by watching the video. Voice, Elder Price’s dad, Joseph Smith and a mission president), is a 56-year-old journeyman actor on and off Broadway, so his words carry some weight. The show’s comedy produces “huge tears through laughter,” he says. “It’s like a drug you can’t buy. It sends us all out into life with a positive feeling.” Mormon, created by Lopez and South Park’s Trey Parker and Matt Stone, lampoons its fair share of atrocities. In the wrong hands, they could be far less funny. Apparently, they were in the right creative hands. Upon its opening, Vogue magazine called The Book of Mormon “the filthiest, most offensive and — surprise — the sweetest thing you’ll see on Broadway … and quite possibly the funniest musical ever.” The show has its naysayers but has proved overwhelmingly popular, having grossed more than $500 million to date. It still plays to overflow houses in New York and on tour and has companies in Australia, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Mormon’s creative team “put something together that’s truly incredible,” Bohmer says. “I just want to stay out of the way of the script — there’s nothing to fix. It’s just, deliver the mail cause the mail is so good.

“The beauty of the show is that it never insults in any way,” Bohmer says. “It never says look how stupid or goofy these boys are.” Even Mormons have proved relatively accepting. The Church of Latter-day Saints regularly buys ads in the Broadway Playbill and other theater programs, saying: “You’ve Seen the Play … Now Read the Book,” using the spoofy show to attract potential converts. Bohmer has played the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera and Enjolras in Les Miserables at points in his career, so he’s seen some long runs. That doesn’t negate his gratitude for Mormon. “This is the first time in a long time that I’ve been in a show with this kind of legs,” he says. “I’m lucky, I’m treated very well, and I don’t take it for granted.” The show triumphs, he believes, because its heart is as big as its humor is daring. “It celebrates the goodness of humanity and the value of faith and religion. I think it tries to tell us that no matter what you believe, faith is important, but faith is here to serve you — faith should make it easier for us to get through the day.” This show, he adds, “just keeps telling you the truth without telling you what to think about it. It lets you make your own decisions.” To that we say, “Hasa Diga Eebowai.”

TREY PARKER (Co-Director, Book, Music, Lyrics) wrote and directed his first feature film, Cannibal! The Musical, while attending the University of Colorado-Boulder. A few years later, he co-created the hit animated series “South Park” with Matt Stone (his college friend and Cannibal! producer). “South Park” debuted on Comedy Central in 1997 and is in its 21st season. It has won five Emmy awards and a coveted Peabody Award. The same year “South Park” debuted, Parker wrote, directed and starred in the film Orgazmo. Two years later, he and Stone released the critically acclaimed feature film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. The musical, which Parker directed and co-wrote, earned an Oscar nomination for best song and the firstever New York Film Critics Circle Award for an animated film. In 2004, the pair returned with the action movie Team America: World Police, which starred a cast of marionettes (Parker co-wrote and directed). Parker, orignally from Conifer, Colo., has long dreamd of writing a Broadway musical. ROBERT LOPEZ (Book, Music, Lyrics) is the co-creator of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon. With his wife and collaborator, Kristen AndersonLopez, he wrote the songs for Disney’s Frozen, earning an Oscar and a Grammy for the movie’s signature song, “Let It Go,” and a Grammy for the Frozen soundtrack. Lopez and Anderson-Lopez also co-wrote the song “Remember Me” from Pixar’s Coco, the original musical Up Here for the La Jolla Playhouse’s 2015/16 season, the score for Disney’s Winnie the Pooh and Finding Nemo: The Musical (playing at Walt Disney World since 2006). The team has adapted Frozen for Broadway and is working on the Disney animated film Frozen 2. Lopez shared two Emmy wins for the music for Nickelodeon’s “The Wonder Pets” and Emmy nominations for the musical episode of “Scrubs” and the song “Moving Pictures,” which opened the 87th Academy Awards. His work has been featured on 22

FOR YOUR INFORMATION THE THEATER A fully restored 1929 “movie palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multipurpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballets, comedies, concerts, movies and private corporate events. PRIVATE EVENTS The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, accommodating 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. You can blame geology for the dearth of the natural ones. Georgia’s 30-plus human-made lakes offer boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, sandy shores for summertime reading, golf, wildlife and picnicking all within driving distance of metro Atlanta. We have a few snapshots to get you started. You can visit them to raise your activity level or lower your stress. Just remember to plop an umbrella in that drink and slather on the SPF.
LAKE ALLATOONA | About an hour away You might run out of leisure time before you run out of things to do at this 12,000-acre lake northwest of Atlanta, near Cartersville. Lake Allatoona has eight marinas, nine campgrounds and 15 day-use parks near and on the lake. Fish for largemouth bass, rainbow trout and perch. Bring your boat or rent one — with a fishing guide — at $250 and up. Stay in Red Top Mountain Lodge ($75-$130) or dwell in the great outdoors for a few days of camping at Red Top Mountain State Park ($23-$25), where a sandy beach invites swimmers. LAKE BLUE RIDGE | About 2 hours away Peaceful, crystal-clear waters burble here, where 80 percent of the lake’s 3,300 acres is in the Chattahoochee National Forest and thus, protected from development. Lake Blue Ridge, due north from Atlanta, has one of the largest earth dams in the nation. It’s fed by the Toccoa River and considered a “top-of-the-food-chain” lake, without commercial runoff. Rent kayaks, pontoons and paddleboards at Lake Blue Ridge Marina or Morganton Point Recreation Area. There’s a pebble beach at Morganton (so wear shoes when you swim), plus concessions and public showers. The mountain town of Blue Ridge is laid-back and artsy. LAKE HARTWELL | 2 hours away Lake Hartwell, straddling the Georgia/South Carolina border, is one of the largest recreational bodies of water in the Southeast with 962 miles of shoreline, camping, hiking, birds galore and plenty of wildlife to spot. It’s not your best bet if you’re bent on swimming, however. Mix indoor comfort and outdoor fun by staying at the Skeleton House B&B ($120 and up), a Victorian house on 2 acres with Englishstyle gardens. You can walk downtown but still are near the water. Here you can have your lake and eat from it, too. Striped bass are plentiful and 20-pound catches are not unusual. HIGH FALLS LAKE | About an hour away This lake is almost hidden in a pine forest some 50 miles south of Atlanta. High Falls Lake, named for the tumbling cascades on the Towaliga River, rates some of the best largemouth bass fishing in Georgia. Get your glamping (glamour camping) fix at the 1,050-acre High Falls State Park in a yurt with a lake view ($80). The park also has 107 tent, trailer and RV sites; a paddle-in primitive campsite for up to 25 people; two boat ramps; and a swimming pool. Swimming is not allowed in the lake or falls. LAKE LANIER | 50 minutes away Lake Sidney Lanier is Atlanta’s outdoor party palace, having attracted all ages since the 1950s. Georgia’s largest lake, slightly northeast of Atlanta, has 700 miles of shoreline along 38,000 acres. Lodging choices are plentiful, many are pet-friendly, and they range from nearby chain hotels to Lake Lanier Islands’ hotel rooms and villas. Vacation packages at the grand Legacy Lodge ($149-$320) can include farm-to-table dining, golfing, water-park passes, horseback riding and romantic getaways. New for summer: Waste away (in the best way) in Margaritaville, a 1,500-acre attraction that includes a sandy beach, a wave pool, two booze-cruising party yachts and an RV resort. High Falls Lake lives in a forest about 50 miles south of Atlanta. It's named for the cascades on the Towaliga River. It has a pool, but swimming in the lake or falls is prohibited..
LAKE OCONEE &LAKE SINCLAIR | 90 mins away The Oconee River connect these sister lakes, sitting pretty between Atlanta and Augusta. Note that that they’re 22 miles apart by road, however. Plenty of local businesses cater to both destinations. The 20-mile-long Oconee (“great waters” in the Creek language) offers waterside golfing on seven courses, water skiing (rentals at Young Harris Watersports) and rejuvenation (at the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Spa), which has an indoor pool and a fitness center). You won’t really rough it at the 55-acre Lake Oconee/Greensboro KOA, which has 23 railroad boxcars, club cars and lakeside cabooses converted into camping cabins ($118 and up). There’s also a boat launch, a private beach and two swimming pools. Lake Sinclair’s 15,000 acres is beloved by anglers and hospitable to swimmers. National fishing tournaments happen here, with your best bets being bass, catfish and bream. Recreational opportunities abound at Sinclair. LAKE RABUN | 2 hours away Woods, wineries, winding roads and waterways are signatures of North Georgia’s scenic Rabun County. Lake Rabun is a twisty 835-acre reservoir with 25 miles of shoreline. The Lake Rabun Hotel (beginning at $127 in season) combines quaint with quality in its farm-to-table restaurant, chef-inspired desserts, cocktails and every-room-is-customized ethos. Rabun Beach offers camping (80 tent/trailer sites), swimming, boating and fishing. This is the land of 12 waterfalls and high-view hiking. There are hundreds of acres of vineyards, all of which welcome visitors for tastings and events. LAKE SEMINOLE | Almost 4 hours away In this southeast corner of Georgia, you’re nearly in Florida. Notice the Spanish moss draping the trees and the sandhill cranes loitering to catch any fish you might drop. Fish are plentiful in this 37,500-acre lake — 79 types, in fact. The Chattahoochee, Flint and Apalachicola rivers feed Lake Seminole, helping make it a Deep South paradise for birding, boating and rustic relaxation. Swimming is not recommended (beware the gators). Seminole Cabins offers new, nicely appointed lodging on a cove (one to four bedrooms, $450-$700 weekly). Whether you’re fishing for footlong black bass or catching time away from the city, Lake Seminole is waiting. So are the cranes. DETAILS: gastateparks.org/Seminole.

tlanta’s summer sizzles with steaks, pizza, pigs and 90-year-old burgers. But in the end, we must bid goodbye to Decatur’s Cakes + Ale and Italian chow in Buckhead. Here’s what’s happening on the metro dining scene.
WELL DONE The suburbs are sizzling. ARI Korean Steakhouse on Medlock Bridge Road in Johns Creek brings style to the art of Korean barbecue, where you cook marinated meats and vegetables yourself with a small gas grill built into your table. 42

Grab a booth and get grilling — thinly sliced beef brisket, pork belly, spicy squid and spicy chicken are among the meats that cook beautifully and come with a slew of small complimentary side dishes. Ari is open for lunch and dinner, has a lively bar and includes a fantastic bakery called The Cakeshop, which creates Instagram-worthy cakes, pastries and a rainbow of macarons. … On scale alone, the buzziest restaurant opening in the past decade has to be Little Alley Steak in Buckhead. The Roswell original is an intimate butcher-themed den of red meat and brown liquor. The Buckhead location looks big-league ready. It inhabits the former AJA (and before that, Emeril’s) space, serving wet- and dry-aged beef in 9,000 square feet of sexy red leather, butcher-block wood, white subway tile and a sea of Edison light bulbs. If you’re thirsty, sip from the extensive wine list or sample from 400-plus bottles of bourbon, whiskey and scotch. … The magazine Garden & Gun, a hipster chronicle of highbrow Southern art, food, horticulture and, yes, hunting, now lives and breathes in restaurant form with the Garden & Gun Club at The Battery Atlanta, next to SunTrust Park. Like the magazine, the ambience is fancy yet cozy with stylish bric-a-brac and taxidermy throughout (including mounted heads in the bathrooms)! Expect pimento cheese, boiled peanuts, raw oysters, fried quail and cornmeal-fried white shrimp. The flavors are hearty, and the dishes are beautiful without an ounce of pretense or Deep South cliché.

SIMMERING Buckhead, get ready to pig out with your own branch of the Decatur darling The Iberian Pig. Look for Spanishinspired tapas, imported cheeses and charcuterie this winter in the new Hanover Buckhead Village on Roswell Road near the Buckhead Theatre. The Pig comes from Castellucci Hospitality Group, which owns and operates Bar Mercado and Recess on Krog Street, Cooks & Soldiers in West Midtown, Double Zero at Emory Village and Sugo in Johns Creek, as well at the Decatur Pig and another downtown at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. … Sandy Springs pie lovers are likely salivating in anticipation of their own Antico Pizza Napoletana, which is vying to supplant (get it?) 4 Seasons Pottery on Hammond Drive and open in spring 2019. Antico founder Giovanni Di Palma has filed a permit to demolish the existing building and build a home for his famous imported brick ovens. This would be Antico’s fourth location — it already has eateries on Atlanta’s Westside near Georgia Tech, at The Battery Atlanta and at Avalon in Alpharetta. … The aroma of grilled meats will join the mix at Perimeter Mall when Breakers Korean BBQ moves in next to The Cowfish, the burger/sushi hybrid on Level 2 near Dillard’s. Breakers has five locations in four states (California, Georgia Texas and Virginia), including the one in Duluth, and promises an upscale experience even as you grill your own meats tableside. It will take over the spot once occupied by The Pub. … An Atlanta icon soon becomes a nonagenarian. The Varsity first asked “What’ll ya have …” on Aug. 12, 1928. To mark the occasion, it’s selling limited-edition cups for $5.99 and offering unlimited refills on soft drinks in them and 90-cent refills on frosted orange, vanilla and chocolate shakes through Dec. 31. On its actual birthday — Aug. 18 — all menu items will cost 90 cents all day at all five locations (Athens, Dawsonville, Kennesaw, Midtown and Norcross).
The bone-in Tomahawk at Buckhead's Little Alley is a 30-ounce ribeye dry-aged for 60 days. Try it with the massive onion rings and charred broccoli. 44
TOAST The award-winning Decatur restaurant Cakes + Ale closed after dinner service June 9, a move announced just days earlier. The imaginative farm-to-table spot on Sycamore Street specialized in dishes made with seasonal ingredients. It often made best-of lists, and chef Billy Allin has been a semifinalist in the James Beard awards’ Best Chef: Southeast category more than once. Allin and wife Kristin cited the need to take a break, find more time for family and concentrate on their younger properties, Proof Bakeshop and Bread & Butterfly, both in Inman Park. … The taps at Tap have tapped out. After 10 years of brews and burgers at the Midtown corner of Peachtree and 14th streets, the gastropub kicked its last keg in late May. Owner Concentrics

Restaurants cited lease renewal issues in closing its second legacy concept within months. You might recall that One Midtown Kitchen shuttered in March. … If you’re keeping score at home, Todd English Tavern (at The Battery Atlanta) struck out after a single season. The eatery from the locally grown celebrity chef closed before the Atlanta Braves home opener in March. The space has been swallowed by the mammoth (and apparently much more successful) two-story sports bar Sports and Social. … Lastly, we say arrivederci to the Italian duo of Bar Americano and Bar Crema, which lasted a mere six months at their side-by-side slots in Buckhead’s East Andrews district. Bar Americano considered itself a casual American-Italian spot; Bar Crema offered espresso drinks, cocktails and lighter bites. The creators, Ten Apart, also own The Pinewood in Decatur, The Mercury at Ponce City Market and the newish Deep End, a late-night taco spot that opened in November in the Old Fourth Ward. Fox Summer Film Festival 'Night of the Living Dead,' 'Iron Man,' 'Funny Girl' and 2 sing-alongs among the titles lined up. By Kathy Janich
EIGHT MOVIES over two months, two sing-alongs, two 50th anniversaries and an untold number of popcorn boxes (and toasty hot dogs, perhaps). Those are a few of the anecdotal numbers behind the Fox Theatre’s annual Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival. The fest opens July 27 with Night of the Living Dead and closes Aug. 25 with the 7 p.m. screening of a movie still not named at our deadline (it was to be announced after the July 4 holiday). You can count on every showing being huge — the Fox Theatre's screen measures 26-ft. high and nearly 57-ft. wide. The opening-night film and related festivities are fit for the undead, beginning with the 50th anniversary showing of Night of the Living Dead (10 p.m. July 27). In partnership with the ninth annual Atlanta Zombie Pub Crawl (July 28, age 21 and up only), zombie and non-zombie ticket holders can partake of a pre-screening costume contest plus food and drink specials. Zombie makeover stations ($5-$10) are available if you’re feeling a bit too ... alive. Some proceeds will benefit Team Fox, the Michael J. Fox Foundation in support of Parkinson’s Research.

It's Trolls versus Bergens in this 2016 animated feature from DreamWorks. The Trolls are small creatures who live in an almost perpetual state of happiness — until they’re discovered by the Bergens, who eat them. Yum. GREASE SING-ALONG. 7:30 p.m. Aug. 23. Rama-lama-ding-dong! It’s back to the 1950s with this 40th-anniversary screening. Join the T-Birds, the Pink Ladies, bad boy John Travolta and good girl Olivia Newton-John in a musical homage to simpler times. Were you born to hand jive? MOANA SING-ALONG. 2 p.m. Aug. 25. This 2016 animated feature from Walt Disney Pictures tells the story of the strong-willed daughter of a Polynesian village chief chosen by the ocean to reunite a mystical relic with a goddess. FOX FUN FACTS Uncover the mysteries that lie within the Egyptian Ballroom There’s more to the Fox Theatre than its expansive 4,665-seat auditorium, Moorish design and spacious stage. Its hallways, alcoves and meeting/event spaces are just as luxe as everything else in sight. In fact, the Egyptian Ballroom, Grand Salon and Spanish Room — all event spaces that can be rented for parties, weddings and the like — were originally Shriners’ meeting spaces. Here are few more fun facts about the Egyptian Ballroom: • The ballroom’s balcony is a scarab, or dung beetle, the symbol for the sun god Ra, who was thought to ward off evil. It’s surrounded by the wings of Osiris, god of the underworld, afterlife and resurrection.
• The ballroom’s original 7,500-sq. ft. floor is made of hard maple, also known as rock maple. A custom-designed carpet with Egyptian symbols of the afterlife and resurrection now protects the maple floor.
• The gilded and glazed wings of Osiris stretch above the ballroom’s stage. A plaster intaglio panel (an incised or engraved design) of Ramses II subduing an enemy is the focal point.
• The ballroom walls were covered with several coats of paint in the 1970s, obscuring the original stenciled designs. When the years of paint were removed, vivid Egyptian symbols for life and rebirth once again saw the light of day ... and night.
• The painted symbols in the ballroom are authentic hieroglyphics but don’t form any real phrases when put together.
