The Atlanta Shakespeare Theatre Company’s A Midsummer Nights Dream

IT’S LITERALLY A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM If there are star-crossed lovers, a play within a play, fights and lots of mishaps, then you know it’s a Shakespearean play. The Atlanta Shakespeare Theater presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream — complete with a fairy king and queen, runaway lovers and a gaggle of amateur actors trying to rehearse a play in the forest. Not surprisingly, there is a comical cluster of confusion that eventually gets untangled. This classic is directed by Adam King, who is making his ASC mainstage directorial debut. The play will run through July 24 at its Peachtree Street location.

the American Jewish Songbook, Feb. 5, 2023 in a show that was rescheduled from January 2022. Feinstein has built a dazzling career over the last three decades bringing the music of the Great American Songbook to the world. GEORGIA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS AWARDS POET LAUREATE’S PRIZE Georgia’s Poet Laureate Chelsea Rathburn, in collaboration with Georgia Council for the Arts, announced that Aran Sonnad-Joshi, an 11th grader at Midtown High School was named the the winner of the ninth annual Poet Laureate’s Prize. The prize is awarded for an original poem written by a Georgia high school student. This annual program is designed to encourage students in grades nine through 12 to write original poems and engage in the art form of poetry. Finalists were also named: Emerson Keen, 10th grade at Decatur High School; Isabel Liu, 10th grade at Wheeler High School; JeongHyeon (Erica) Yun, 11th grade at McIntosh High School, and Lydia Ruth Witter, 12th grade at Decatur High School. “Judging the Poet Laureate’s Prize is always difficult given the number of talented writers in high schools across the state, but it’s a rewarding challenge,” said Rathburn. “Reading this year’s submissions, I was reminded of poetry’s power to express complex insights and emotions in a small space, bringing personal experience to life for others. I’m thrilled to celebrate this year’s winner and finalists, and I suspect we’ll be reading more of their work in the future.”

TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND ROLLS BACK TO ATLANTA The Tedeschi Trucks Band — the revered 12-piece collective founded by husbandand-wife duo, guitarist Derek Trucks and singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi — will play two nights at the Fox Theatre, July 15 and 16 with its Wheels of Soul Tour. Los Lobos and Gabe Dixon will be the supporting acts. In addition to touring, the band announced its most ambitious studio project: I Am The Moon, which features four albums and 24 original songs. Inspired by a mythic Persian tale of star-crossed lovers, and emotionally driven by the isolation and disconnection of the pandemic era, the thematic “I Am The Moon” totals more than two hours of music, unfolding across a robust tapestry of genre-defying explorations that propel the treasured American ensemble into new and thrilling creative territory.

FOG-DELAYED STONES, BETTE MIDLER’S GHOST AND TURNING THE STAGE INTO AN ICE RINK

• The Rolling Stones have performed at the Fox twice, to date. In June 1978, the show was first billed as “the Cockroaches,” so as not to reveal too early the true identity of the performers. • The Stones next appeared Oct. 26, 1981, playing for a standingroom-only crowd. As history has it, the bandmates traveled to Savannah for a day-trip and, due to dense fog in Atlanta, their return flight was rerouted to Macon. The show began 90 minutes late. • Bette Midler was scheduled for a three-night gig in February 1983. According to longtime Atlanta concert promoter Alex Cooley

(who died in 2016), when she reached her dressing room she claimed that someone had died there, that it was haunted and she would not perform. The Divine Miss M was moved to another dressing room and, apparently content enough, agreed to go onstage. • On New Year’s Day 2005, Broadway on Ice ice-skating pros Nancy Kerrigan and Rudy Galindo took to the stage, along with Broadway’s Leslie Uggams (a Tony Award winner for Hallelujah, Baby!). Creating an impromptu ice rink was an overnight process that called for spraying the stage with water and quickly freezing it. Again and again and again.

Atlanta’s Fox Theatre has played host to many world-renowned artists, from the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd, to Bette Midler and Widespread Panic. In July 1976, in fact, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed for three consecutive nights, recording the album One More From the Road and donating $5,000 toward the Save the Fox campaign. In February 1993, the band played another three nights, one of which was broadcast on pay-per-view television. Here are a few other rockin’ fun facts:
