We are

We are committed to providing unparalleled legal service and concierge-level support to every client we serve. Give us a call today, we can help you calm the chaos and reach your goals.

We all tend to make assumptions about others based on our observations. It’s rewarding to wonder about another’s particular situation, what makes them tick, or what brought them to this exact moment in their life. That imaginative thinking is also key to building empathy. When that wonder turns to certainty, however, it can become narrow-minded and limiting. For how much can we truly glean about someone just by looking at them? How deeply can others know us from just our appearance?

Milo Imagines the World asks all of us to ponder these questions, examine our own assumptions, and ultimately imagine a world free of such judgement. It also celebrates the vivid imagination of our young hero with one of the most joyful scores in recent memory.

While this story is squarely set in New York along the iconic 125th Street subway line through Harlem, it’s decidedly Atlantan in its creation. The writer, Terry Guest, the composer, Christian Magby, and the lyricist, Christian Albright, all grew up in our city, and Atlanta’s fingerprints are all over the soul of this show.

It’s fitting that we kick off this historic season with an Atlanta show about a young child imagining a world. Because we too are busy imagining a world for the young children in Atlanta. Right above you, facing Peachtree Street, we are putting the finishing touches on the new Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families, a new theater wholly designed for children. Imagine a world where the experience of live theater is a birthright for every child in Atlanta. Come January 2026 when we cut the ribbon on this new stage, this dream will become a reality!

SEEING THE BIGGER PICTURE

Composer Christian Magby and Lyricist Christian Albright on Milo, the inspiration behind the show, and what it was like to return to the Alliance

Adapting a children’s picture book into a full-fledged musical may seem slightly intimidating. But, luckily for Christian Magby and Christian Albright, they are always up to the task, with two prior book-to-stage adaptations already under their belts.

“My first experience with [ Milo Imagines the World ] was met with a feeling of wonder, surprise, and melancholy,” says lyricist Christian Albright. “[It’s] a simple but effective and beautiful story with a tear-dropping and monumental ending. It makes you reevaluate how you look at the book from the beginning and how you look at others moving forward.”

Albright and his counterpart, composer Christian Magby, were first approached by the artistic directors at Children’s Theatre Company, Chicago Children’s Theatre, and The Rose Theatre about turning Matt de la Peña’s children’s book into a musical. “Immediately, I went to the first YouTube read along I could find,” Magby says, “and instantly fell in love with the story.”

Milo Imagines the World follows the journey of Milo, a curious boy with a vivid imagination and a sketchpad full of dreams. As he travels on the subway with his sister, he draws in his sketchbook as he imagines why the other passengers are on the subway and where they’re going.

“Honestly, I feel like we kind of let the story and the illustrations speak to us,” Magby says.

“Milo’s imagination is so vast, so it allows us to go so many different places, musically.

Christian Albright’s lyrics also have a way of jumping off the page. We usually see the same thing when it comes to narrative, so it’s always fun to see how our ideas align.”

When asked about favorite lyrics from the show, Albright says that his favorite lyric is “I got my hat and my bag / and my pencil and my book / I feel so nervous / like a soda that’s shook.” This line comes directly from the book and incorporating them into the musical was important to Albright because “[the feelings were] so prevalent in our titular character.”

Magby’s favorite lyric is when subway riders ask Milo, “Or do you see what you only draw inside your sketchbook?” He says, “I love this lyric and this moment, because Milo actually learns from his own imagination. In all that he has drawn, has he missed a bigger picture?”

The story contains a twist ending that takes audiences by surprise and, hopefully, will be the catalyst for many discussions about family, imagination, and going a little deeper beyond what we can see on the surface.

“I think it’s easy to say, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover,’” says Magby. “But I challenge us to go a step further by opening the books that we judge. You might learn something — even about yourself.”

“I hope kids learn that imagination is a beautiful thing to hold onto and use,” Albright adds. “Also, be curious, but never assume you know someone until they’ve told you their story.”

Although Milo originally premiered in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Children’s Theatre Company, Magby and Albright are no strangers to the Atlanta arts scene, having previously debuted their musicals The Incredible Book Eating Boy at the Alliance and Mother of God at Southwest Performing Arts Center. They also contributed songs to the Alliance’s world premiere musical, Into the Burrow: A Peter Rabbit™ Tale.

Lyricist Christian Albright

“To be working on this show in our hometown, at Alliance Theatre, with our friends and for our friends,” Magby says, “is truly a remarkable experience. We’ve been very passionate about telling this story, and it’s a dream come true to bring it home. It feels especially special for me, because this is also my first time music directing it! So it’s a lot of fun to be able to come to work and play with this story every day.”

Although this production is geared toward younger audiences, Albright clarifies that the musical “isn’t simply a show for young audiences. It’s a show for everyone, and I guarantee there is something for everyone to take away from.”

“I think we are all alike in more ways than we think,” Magby adds. “In the opening, everyone has several places they need to be but, for a moment, they all share the same train.”

YOUR INNER SUPERPOWER

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I would choose teleportation!

Can you imagine that? The power to travel anywhere in the world just by snapping your fingers. Think of how many places you could go, how many people you could meet. Sadly, we have not discovered the secret of teleportation just yet. But we do have the New York City Subway!

New York City has a population over 15 times the size of Atlanta, so it makes sense that they’d have to have a bigger public transport system too. The NYC subway system has 472 stations and transports around 3.6 million people every day!

Can you guess how many people take the MARTA each day?

Only 518,000!

That’s barely 14% of the amount that the subway transports. If you rode the NYC subway every day, it would be possible to meet a new person each day for years!

Have you even met everyone in this room? Take a look around — can you count all the people? Public spaces like the subway, parks, and even theaters can all be places to meet someone new. What a gift to live in a world where we get to connect with new people every day. That’s a kind of superpower, isn’t it?

But with that power comes a great responsibility. A responsibility to use our power of connection to be kind, to make friends, and to create a world better than the way we found it.

I challenge you to use that power today! Use this theater as a space to meet a new friend. Can you imagine something together?

Since taking over this position, Chris has expanded the reach and impact by making the Alliance Theatre Education department a vital resource for advancing the civic agenda of Atlanta. This work is accomplished through deep and sustained partnerships with social service organizations throughout the city. Under his leadership, the Alliance launched its Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young program, which provides fully interactive professional theater experiences for children of all abilities from ages newborn through five years old; the Alliance Teen Ensemble, which performs world premiere plays commissioned for and about teens; the Palefsky Collision Project, where teens produce a new work after colliding with a classic text; expanded the Alliance’s summer camp program to include over 3,000 children in multiple locations across Atlanta; and Alliance@ work, a professional development program designed for the business sector — the latest offering of which uses theatre practice to create a culture of civility in the workplace. In 2014, Chris added the title Associate Artistic Director, and has continued to expand the Alliance’s education offerings. During his tenure in this position, the Alliance has produced over a dozen world premiere plays for young audiences, including Pancakes, Pancakes! by Ken Lin, The Dancing Granny by Jireh Breon Holder, Max Makes a Million by Liz Diamond, and The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Madhuri Shekar. Currently, the Alliance serves over 100,000 students pre-k—12 each season, as well as over 4,000 adults through its extensive education offerings. In 2023, he was named Artistic Director of the Alliance Theatre.

MIKE SCHLEIFER (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2014 as the General Manager and in 2016, assumed the role of Managing Director. During his time at the Alliance, Mike has led the administrative and producing team on over 100 productions including bringing Tuck Everlasting and The Prom to Broadway. He was one of the architects of the “On the Road” season while a multi-million

dollar renovation of the Coca-Cola Stage was underway. Mike is excited to have started the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee at the Alliance and to serve on the board of the League of Resident Theatres and True Colors Theatre Company. Prior to Atlanta, he spent 13 years at Baltimore’s Center Stage working in several roles including Associate Producer, Production Manager and Resident Stage Manager. While in Baltimore, Mike was an adjunct faculty member at Towson University and has guest-lectured all over the country. Mike began as a Stage Manager and has dozens of stage management credits between his time in New York and working regionally. Mike is married to theater director and educator Laura Hackman and the proud father of two boys, Jack and Ben.

As a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering children experiencing economic instability, drawchange creates safe spaces for children, many living in shelters in Atlanta, where they can cope with stress, build confidence, and express their uniqueness. Like Milo Imagines The World, at drawchange, we believe in the power of imagination. Visual art significantly shapes a child’s confidence, sense of self, and possibility.

drawchange’s work goes far beyond pastels and drawing paper. Our founder and CEO, Jennie Lobato, didn’t start drawchange simply to make art for art’s sake — she understood that art could be a potent instrument for change. Through creativity, children learn problem-solving, dream-building, and emotional strength, just as Milo uses his imagination to dream.

In Milo Imagines the World, Milo’s creative thoughts lead him to draw the lives of strangers during a subway ride, creating vibrant stories of the passengers on the train. As the ride ends, we learn Milo is visiting his mother — shifting his perspective and reminding us that everyone carries unseen stories. This moment reflects the mission of drawchange, a nonprofit that uses art therapy programming to empower children facing poverty and homelessness. Like Milo, many of our children are processing complex emotions, often related to family separation, instability, or incarceration. Through guided art experiences, we give space to imagine, express, and reframe their stories.

Milo’s fictional journey correlates with the realworld experiences of drawchange’s children. This story successfully depicts how imagination can be a powerful tool for empathy, resilience, and managing stress. Creative expression helps children connect with others, dream beyond their circumstances, and feel seen in a world that often overlooks them. The children that drawchange serves may see parts of themselves in Milo’s story — using creativity not just to cope but to understand and reshape their reality, to draw change in their lives and futures. Together, they show us that art is even more than expression — it is empowerment.

Art saves lives. Through the transformative power of art, our organization has witnessed children openly share a vision of their futures they didn’t think was possible. We give them a space to turn their imagination into action.

To learn more about our programs, please visit www.drawchange.org. Your support helps us thrive in bringing joy and hope to children who need it most.

Alliance Theatre Sets Wonder Free.

And what delights during performances ignites a brighter future. You can invest in better tomorrows by supporting access for youth to experience world-class theatre on a stage that’s all their own. Now is the time.

Introducing The Goizueta Stage For Youth

And Families,

a transformative new space designed to inspire young audiences year-round. Research shows that early access to live theater can significantly combat critical issues like low literacy rates and the urgent youth mental health crisis. To fulfill this promise, the Alliance Theatre is launching a $10 million Imagine Endowment to expand our capacity to serve more young people and sustain these enriching experiences in perpetuity. With this endowment, the Goizueta Stage will be a beacon of accessibility, welcoming children from all backgrounds and removing economic, geographic, and physical barriers to ensure that every child can engage with the magic of theatre for generations to come.

SYNOPSIS

Every Sunday morning, Milo and his sister Adrienne rush down 125th Street to catch the 4 train. From East Harlem through Manhattan, Milo watches people board the train and transforms everyday passengers into larger-than-life characters — a lawyer who loves pogo sticks or a robot plumber? Anything is possible in Milo’s imagination! He sketches out his ideas in his notebook, and the characters appear in song, dance, and color! All the while, Adrienne is focused on making sure she and Milo get to their destination on time. When they finally arrive, Milo realizes that people aren’t necessarily how he pictured them, and that there is more to discover about one another, whether it’s a stranger on the subway or his practical big sister Adrienne.
