A few years ago, I found myself lost in the bowels of the Paris Metro system. My husband was joining me the next day, but this first evening, I was navigating on my own. I was gazing at a confusing subway wall map when I was joined by a family of travelers who happened to all speak in Southern accents. They were from Peachtree City! They escorted me to my hotel, invited me to dine and even asked me to join them for sightseeing the next morning if I wanted the company. Such kindness.

The memory of that kindness is ever imprinted.

Scrooge has rejected the notion that kindness is in any way a serious value and is challenged to remember the kindnesses in his past life. And this is a great reason for these nighttime spirit visits: to remind him of the power of kindness ... to imprint memories. In the novel, Scrooge listens to the strains of a little piece of music he heard as a child. Afterward, he thinks, “ If he could have listened to it often, years ago, he may have cultivated the kindness of life with his own hands, without resorting to the sexton’s spade that buried Jacob Marley.”

The main lesson and hope of A Christmas Carol is that it’s never too late to change. It is never too late to become conscious of kindness, recognize it in others and find the ways to cultivate it in ourselves — to “open up our shut up hearts freely.” I am very touched that every year for each of the last several years, the ACC cast has adopted a family in need, in lieu of buying each other expensive Secret Santa gifts. They do this quietly, and it has become a part of their artistic process in the show. Kindness is its own reward and, I believe, is best delivered without a desire for accolades.

And now THAT memory of kindness is forever imprinted.

A holiday season without A Christmas Carol?

Not a ghost of a chance.

That’s because Charles Dickens’ story of one miserly man’s whopper of a dream has it all: childhood magic, romantic encounters, good-deed doing, caroling, snow, mistletoe and even a Christmas goose that Mrs. Cratchit has stuffed with onion, sage and bread crumbs.

Above all, the story introduced to England in 1843 is a powerful cautionary tale that bears this message: It’s never too late to redeem oneself.

The task of redeeming bitter, old Ebenezer Scrooge, who’s “immune to the joys of Christmas,” is huge.

Dickens knew Scrooge could never convincingly change unless he had the living daylights scared out of him.

So he wrote not one, but four ghosts, into the story.

According to John Mullan, a scholar writing for the British Library, “The ghost story as a distinct and popular genre was the invention of the Victorians [and] Dickens was hugely influential in establishing the genre’s popularity.”

The ghosts in Dickens’ yuletide chestnut, Mullan says, “are by turns comic, grotesque and allegorical.”

“Each ghost is quite

different from the next and has a specific purpose within Scrooge’s full journey,” says Rosemary Newcott, who has directed the annual Alliance Theatre staging for the past 15 years.

The company has presented A Christmas Carol in one form or another for 26 years. This year’s is again David H. Bell’s 1999 adaptation, with some revisions in 2013. A recent change concerns the Ghost of Christmas Future — but that surprise is being saved for the audience.

It’s important to point out, says Newcott, that the ghosts “are not just scary.”

“Like any of the characters,” she says, “they play many different levels.

Dickens is saying so much more than ‘This is a ghost story.’ It’s a morality tale above all. The essential story helps us recognize the compassion we should have for all human beings, no matter their circumstances.”

Before he settles in for a most unsettling Christmas Eve slumber, Scrooge is disturbed by the anguished ghost of Jacob Marley, his seven-years-dead business partner.

Marley’s mission is to frighten Scrooge into realizing what could happen if he doesn’t change. “It’s pretty critical, because he’s

the total setup,” Newcott says. Still, Scrooge is a tough nut to crack. Was that really Marley’s ghost? Maybe it’s just … indigestion?

Enter the Ghost of Christmas Past, a role that Elizabeth Diane Wells has happily inhabited for the past five years. In Bell’s adaptation, her ghost is like a fairy tale: warm, lovely and compassionate as she shows Scrooge the mistakes he’s made in his life.

“I think of Elizabeth as being so — otherworldly,” Newcott says. “She’s a beautiful woman and one of those actors who can walk into a different time period and you have the sense that she really belongs there.”

Before playing the ethereal Ghost of Christmas Past, Wells understudied the role for 10 years while playing young Scrooge’s beloved Belle. “The whole play is so complete in my head,” she says. “It follows you around the rest of the year. But in a good way. ” Wells’ ghost “is not really watching the past to see what happens. She’s rooting for him, she grieves with him, feels his pain. And she’s looking for signs of hope.

She’s almost leading the audience to watch him.”

Actors who play the Ghost of Christmas Past generally “summon up feelings of regret in their own lives,” Newcott says. “It’s

sobering in a way. It reminds me of the bittersweet moments in It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Enter the Ghost of Christmas Present, to inject some humor. Bart Hansard, a character onstage and off, has done the role for 11 seasons. This ghost is “representative of the joyful bounty that life offers us,” says Newcott.

“Bart has a booming voice, a great big laugh. He embraces fun, food, drink, family — all the good things about life. He puts up Christmas lights in the rehearsal hall and brings toys to the kids in the cast. He’s the one who brings cookies to rehearsal. He’s a regular Father Christmas.”

Wells and Hansard prepare for their roles each year by rereading Dickens’ original text, “always such a pleasure, especially because our script really honors it,” says Wells.

While the production — with its elaborate costumes, scenery and special effects — may be “a bear of a show to pull off, it’s such a joy to return to every year,” Newcott says. “The cast, the crew — we have become a family.”

production. Wells says she must always have her holiday shopping done by October.

As for Hansard, “There are days when you think,

‘I’m getting too old for this.’ But truthfully, this is the kind of show that keeps on giving. We have hundreds of people wassailing with us every night.

Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families and after living through so many holiday seasons with this story, she still wonders anew at the power of its message. Rosemary was named an Atlanta Lexus Leader of the Arts in December 2001, and is a recipient of the Princess Grace Foundation Fellowship. In 2005 she was named best director of

the year by the AJC and was awarded the GTC Distinguished Career Award. She is a 2009 recipient of the Princess Grace Special Projects Award and the 2010 Spirit of Suzi Bass Award. As a Seattle-based freelance stage manager, he worked at the 5th Avenue Theatre for four seasons and Seattle Rep for eight seasons. D MARTYN BOOKWALTER (Set Designer) has designed more than 400 productions for theatres across the country. His designs include the award-winning production of Talley’s Folly at the Pasadena Playhouse and several productions for Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles, including Like Jazz, QED (and the subsequent Lincoln Center Theatre production), The Wood Demon, Hunting Cockroaches, Passion Play and Frankie & Johnnie in the Clair De Lune.

He designed A Perfect Wedding, the inaugural production at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, Calif., as well as Barbara Cook’s Mostly Sondheim at the Ahmanson. He has designed for the Geffen Playhouse, Long Wharf Theatre, Playhouse Theatre in London, San Diego Rep, San Jose Rep, Pittsburgh CLO, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Colorado Festival of World Theatre and South Coast Rep, among others. He was the art director of the Fox TV show “MADtv,” for which he received eight consecutive Emmy nominations.

Other awards include the 2001 Angstrom Lighting Lifetime Achievement Award from the L.A. Drama Critics Circle, four Drama Critics Circle awards, a Sarah Siddons Award and 25 Drama-Logue awards.

MARIANN S. VERHEYEN (Costume Designer) has been designing for the Alliance since 1987, most recently for Good People and August: Osage County. Other shows at the Alliance

She is head of the costume design program at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts School of Theater.

DIANE FERRY WILLIAMS (Lighting Designer) has designed more than 20 shows for the Alliance. Favorites include Chess, The Grapes of Wrath, Romeo and Juliet and Once on This Island.

She has worked for many theatres around the country, including Portland Center Stage, Ford’s Theatre, Theatre Under the Stars, the Goodspeed, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, the Goodman and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and has designed many national and international tours.

Awards include a Jeff for Miss Saigon, a Carbonelle in Miami, many Drammy awards in Portland, Ore., an After Dark Award for Sunset Boulevard and seven Jeff nominations for lighting design.

Diane has a master of fine arts in theatrical design from Northwestern University and is the resident lighting designer at Marriott’s Lincolnshire Theatre in Chicago.

CLAY BENNING (Sound Designer) has been the resident sound designer at the Alliance Theatre for 15 years and has designed more than 85 productions including 28 world premieres, 30 musicals and 20 Theater for Young Audiences productions. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, local producing partnerships and regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on projects including Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’ da Noise, Bring in ’ da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. As a director, she has worked at such theatres as the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is a past president of the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group (the national service organization for the field) and is a trustee of Denison University and the Howard School. Susan is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal.

connect with us synopsis: Ebenezer Scrooge, a stone-hearted Victorian accountant and money lender, learns the true meaning of Christmas after he is visited on Christmas Eve by four fantastic spirits: the ghost of Jacob Marley, his former partner in the counting house; the Ghost of Christmas Past; the Ghost of Christmas Present; and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

The specters reveal to Scrooge the seeds in his youth of his loneliness, opportunities for happiness still within his reach, and his dire future if he continues in his mean and miserly ways.

Something about those words gets me every time — now in my 22nd year of experiencing A Christmas Carol at the Alliance Theatre — it never fails to draw a tear or send chills down my spine. Uttered by Scrooge in the very last minutes of Charles Dickens’ iconic A Christmas Carol, these words remind me that we have a choice, we always have a choice. Not necessarily of the events or the circumstances in our lives but of our response and our attitude toward those things. And change is always possible. Actually, it is the one true constant of life ... and while some may find that scary, as clearly illustrated by Dickens’ transformation of Scrooge in this magnificent holiday perennial Alliance Theatre production, it is the great gift for which we should all be so thankful. These words also remind me of the gift of theatre and family. In my own family, both as a child and grandchild and now as a mother, theatre has played a pivotal and most wonderful role in bringing family together. Whether it’s memories of attending plays on Broadway with my parents and grandmother who all adored the theatre, taking my own children to multiple performances at the Alliance Theatre and/or listening to and singing show tunes with my Mom and now my own children in the car, theatre has been a welcome catalyst for amazing intergenerational family outings, laughter, tears and wide-ranging discussions. And this is no truer than with the Alliance Theatre — my family’s theatre family and home here in Atlanta. What a welcoming and special place the Alliance has been in introducing the magic of theatre to my children and cultivating a continued love for the theatre for my family. And now my daughter is actually performing on the stage as a part of the Alliance A Christmas Carol family as a Cratchit child — what a kick! Thank you, Alliance, for the gift of A Christmas Carol and for inspiring theatre for my family and for all families this holiday season and beyond. Happy holidays!

More than 50,000 students each year experience age-specific professional performances and participate in acting classes, drama camps, and in-school initiatives through the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department. The Alliance’s groundbreaking Kathy and Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young performances offer professionally-produced, fully interactive theater for infants and toddlers; the Palefsky Collision Project invites high school artists to create and perform new civic-minded theater based on a classic text; and community acting classes and skill-building workshops engage professional artists, young actors, business leaders, and curious learners of all ages. Twice recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for leadership in arts education, the Alliance Arts for Learning Institute equips classroom teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum and have been empirically proven to improve student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences.

The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps.
