BY HELEN COOPER – In the world of jazz, imitation really is the best form of flat tery. Artists are constantly looking for ways to reinvent previously composed works. The Chano Domínguez Flamenco Quintet, performing December 3–6 at the Jazz Stan dard, may have found a way to reinvent the wheel. Presenting The Flamenco Side of Kind of Blue, The Chano Domínguez Flamenco Quin tet puts their own spin on the 1959 Miles Davis milestone. The staging will be per formed by a unique flamenco/jazz combo under the direction of the brilliant pianist Sebastian Domínguez Lozano, better known as Chano Domínguez. With Mario Rossy on bass, Blas Córdoba on cantaor, Israel “Piraña” Suárez on cajón, and Tomasito performing dance and the palmas, the week end gig will prove to be one of the most unique experiences at the Jazz Standard this year.

Before Getting Engaged > Michael Batshaw’s practical advice for those considering “I Do BY HELEN COOPER – “One hardly ever hears, ‘I wish I had gotten engaged earlier.’ So be gins Michael Batshaw’s new book, 51 Things You Should Know Before Getting Engaged. Batshaw, a psychotherapist and former clini cal director of HAN wrote the book because of a firm belief that people are not properly prepared for the complexities that come with committed adult relationships. With a coun JHO M?:; :?LEH9; H7J; E< D;7HBO ?J I >7H: to argue with him. The book itself aims to help readers deter mine whether they have found “the one, and to make changes that will ensure a solid, healthy relationship before anyone gets down ED ED; AD;; .FB?J ?DJE <?<JO ED; C?D? 9>7FJ;HI 51 Things offers practical advice to anyone in an imperfect relationship (hint: according to 51 Things, no one—and no relationship—is perfect). The beauty of the book is in its simplicity. Some of the advice offered may seem obvious

(#17 – “Patience is a virtue. No really, it is.) and some may seem blunt (#22 – “Marriage is a business. Money is a real issue.) but Bat shaw’s book offers that it is the simple rela tionship elements that can make or break a partnership—and that are often overlooked. 79> C?D? 9>7FJ;H >;7:?D= EH QJ>?D= JE know) is followed by an explanation and an ecdotal advice, an approach that makes Bat shaw’s book seem less clinical and more down to earth. 51 Things You Should Know Before Getting Engaged is a gem of a book; it’s a practice in practical work toward a better rela tionship and could just be your ticket toward a sound, and healthy, “I do. 51 Things You Should Know Before Getting Engaged is part of the Any Number of Things series, released under Turner‘s new imprint, Trade Paper Press. The series is available at in dependent book stores, Borders, Barnes & No ble, Amazon.com or direct from the publisher at turnerpublishing.com.

semble the best pieces of art from the best artists in a cohesive collection that displays the talent at hand. The same strategy applies when assembling the lineup for MMArtists in Concert. Each year the Metropolitan Museum of Art draws together an impressive collection of musical artists in the MMArtists in Concert. The series, lauded as the best that chamber music has to offer, will feature an impressive assemblage of musicians once again, when they perform at the Met on Friday, December 18 at 7:00pm. Organized by Edward Arron, the group’s artistic coordinator, will feature Colin Jacob sen, violin; Nicholas Cords, viola; Edward Arron, cello; Jeremy Denk, piano; and Jee won Park, piano, performing two works by (;D:;BIIE>D 7HH7D=;: <EH F?7DE <EKH >7D:I violin, and cello: The Hebrides Overture, Op. 26; and Ruy Blas, Op. 95; Gubaidulina’s

String Trio; and Fauré’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 15. The concert is the second of the series of two this year, with both including original music by composer Sofia Gubaidulina. What makes the MMArtists in Concert is the special blend of classic and contemporary music fea tured. This melding between traditional and current makes the performance accessible in a way not typical of chamber music—and makes for a truly one of a kind experience. For performance details on the MMArtists in Concert, or to purchase tickets, please visit www.metmuseum.org or visit the Concerts & Lectures box office located inside the Museum’s main entrance at 82nd Street and Fifth Avenue. > December 18 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Ave.

BY HELEN COOPER – “Hello my dear, how are you?,” rolls a thick, inviting Lancashire accent. The man on the other end of the phone line is Christian McKay, the acting force behind the title character in Richard Linklater’s newest film Me and Orson Welles. The actor and the film have a bit in common. They are both refreshing throwbacks to a time and place when cultural appreciation of the arts and hopeful, earnest gazing into the future simultaneously existed. They both exist in the analogous yet dissimilar worlds of theater and film. They are both absolutely delightful. In a modern age when the movie industry has taken over as the king of entertainment, it isn’t often that we are reminded of a time when theater was the biggest kid on the block. Me and Orson Welles gives moviegoers a glimpse into a week in 1937—a historical precipice that in hindsight would act as the last gleam of theater’s reign before Tinstletown took strong hold in the 1940’s. It doesn’t hurt that the actor bears a striking resemblance to Welles. “I was filming in Morocco and a woman who had seen Orson once when he filmed a scene of Othello there in the 1950’s said that I looked like him,” McKay chuckles. When I speak with McKay, he is spending time in the countryside of Kent—a far cry from the dusty streets of New York, 1937 depicted in Orson. But it doesn’t take long for him to be transported to the world of Welles himself. He is a veritable encyclopedia of information on the man, having studied his life and work extensively. “I’m sort of a new student of film—I started with Orson’s films and I’ve expanded and am learning so much.” McKay is that very special blend of intelligent and effusive—the kind of man who can disguise a lesson plan in an anecdote. When questioned about his future in film, and whether theater is his true home, his response speaks volumes. “I studied at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, so I’m conditioned to think I’d be an actor in the theater,” McKay’s accent turns Aristotelian and >?I I;B< :;FH;97J?D= D7JKH; FHEL;I ;D:;7H?D= “But really, I’d be happy doing anything so long as it’s creative.” If Me and Orson Welles is any indication, McKay’s future looks bright and ripe with creativity. The star, and the film, reminds us of the best that both film and theater can be, and proves how affecting a production (and performance) can prove to be on an audience. > Me and Orson Welles premieres in November, 2009
