PARK IMPROVEMENT HIGHLIGHTS

PROTECTING OUR NATIVE HABITATS

Caring for Encinitas’ Natural Legacy

Encinitas is home to a unique mosaic of native habitats and many rare and endangered species. The Encinitas Habitat Stewardship Program (EHSP) was created to protect, restore, and manage these natural resources for generations to come.

Through collaboration with partners such as San Diego Botanic Garden, volunteers and staff dedicated more than 706 hours this past year to stewardship activities. Over 23 community events resulted in the removal of 81 cubic yards of invasive plant material and the installation of 950 native plants grown from local Encinitas seed sources.

Current Stewardship Sites:

• Cottonwood Creek Park (Unimproved)

• Cottonwood Creek Drainage Areas B & C (Moonlight Beach Parcel)

• Oakcrest Park

• Saxony Road Open Space

These collective efforts enhance biodiversity, strengthen native plant communities, and deepen the community’s connection to Encinitas’ natural environment.

DISCOVER A NEW TRAIL SYSTEM

Breathtaking Views in Olivenhain’s Eastern Hills

The new One Oak trail system offers more than two miles of interconnected trails winding through Encinitas’ eastern ridges. Constructed as part of the One Oak development by Shea Homes, the trails expand on the City’s Recreational Trails Master Plan (2002) and connect to Knights Bridge and Dove Hollow routes.

The wide decomposed-granite paths (12–20 ft) vary from easy to moderate terrain and welcome hikers, cyclists, and equestrians. Directional markers guide visitors to sweeping coastal and inland vistas, reaching nearly 1,000 ft at the Olivenhain Municipal Water District reservoir overlook.

Managed in partnership with the Escondido Creek Conservancy, this preserve features aromatic sages, oak woodlands, and abundant wildlife including hawks, bobcats, and coyotes.

Trail Tips & Etiquette

• Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat — no drinking fountains on site

• Stay on designated trails and respect wildlife

• Parking is limited; best access near Adams Run or Rancho Summit Dr.
