Foreword Welcome to these very special performances from our talented young dancers. After what has been a hugely challenging period, it is exhilarating to be back inside the four walls of a theatre, sharing our students’ hard work with a live audience.

I hope you are as thrilled to be here as we are and are looking forward to reacquainting yourself with the joy of live performance.

Tonight, we will be presenting an eclectic programme of both classical and contemporary work including two new commissions. I am thrilled that our Third Year graduating students will be performing Les Rendezvous by Sir Frederick Ashton. Our Professional Trainee students will perform God’s Away on Business, a new work by Morgann Runacre-Temple, a multi-talented choreographer who is also the filmmaker behind Scottish Ballet’s award-winning Nutcracker feature film.

We’ll also be sharing works by three choreographers who so boldly rose to the challenge of creating virtual works for last year’s Summer Performance. Memorias del Dorado by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is performed by our Second Year students. Not so Strictly by Didy Veldman is performed by all year groups, and Grace & Gravity, a new

work by Andrew McNicol, is performed by our First Year students. I would also like to congratulate Andrew on his recent appointment as Artistic Associate of English National Ballet School – a well-deserved accolade that will see us deepen our connection and present more new creations from this hugely talented young choreographer.

As well as training the dance talent of the future, we also work to develop our students’ choreographic skills. Tonight, I am delighted to present Anima Mea, Anima Vestra, a work created by Third Year student Stefano Magosso. It is always a proud moment to see our students blossom as choreographers and I’m sure this is just the start for Stefano.

Once again, thank you so much for joining us to celebrate the rich abundance of talent we have across the School.

These opportunities to perform on a professional stage and work with leading choreographers really are invaluable for our students. I hope this evening will live long in their memory and in yours.

Note from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa I am so sorry that I can’t be with you all tonight. It has been a joy to work with the talented students of English National Ballet School once again and I really do hope you enjoy this performance.

Being a mixed-race child between a Belgian mother and a Colombian father I have always been fascinated by the history of my ancestors.

This short ballet retells the story of the presence of the

Spanish conquistadors in Colombia. After its initial discovery, the myth of El Dorado arose, according to which there was a magical city where everything was made of gold. The invasion and conquest of Colombia is a typical, and often regrettable, example of the Spanish conquest of the New World. What is undeniable is that the country is culturally rich and diverse today as a result.

English National Ballet School are performing a short excpert of the piece Memorias del Dorado, originally created in 2011 for the only ballet company of Colombia Incolballet. With thanks to Stephanie Bauger and ENDANZA for the costumes.

Didy Veldman

Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is an award-winning choreographer who has created works for 68 dance companies around the world including Dutch National Ballet, English National Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, West Australian Ballet, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, San Francisco Ballet, New York City Ballet, Ballet Hispanico and Dance Theater of Harlem, among others. A versatile choreographer, Lopez Ochoa creates regularly within the dance field but also for theatre, opera, musical theatre. Her wide-ranging body of work includes short conceptual pieces, full-length narrative ballets, and dance films. The Colombian-Belgian Lopez Ochoa completed her dance education at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp. After a 12-year career in several European dance companies Lopez Ochoa decided in 2003 to focus solely on choreography. That same year she was hailed as the “rising star of the Dutch dance scene” (NRC newspaper) and only 7 years later the Temecula Performing Arts Examiner wrote “Ochoa is truly a masterful choreographer with an edge for what dance can and should be in this constantly changing industry”.

In 2012, she was awarded Best Classical Choreography at the UK National Dance Awards for A Streetcar Named Desire created for the Scottish Ballet. That same year the work was nominated for an Olivier Award. In 2016, Broken Wings, choreographed for English National Ballet, was nominated for numerous awards and reworked into a full-length ballet FRIDA for Dutch National Ballet in 2020.

In 2019, Annabelle became the recipient of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award as well as the program director of the Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Classical Summer Course, a position she will hold for 3 years. During the pandemic of 2020/21, Annabelle pioneered remote choreography, creating 22 short dance films for which she has been featured in Pointe Magazine, Bachtrack, Tv5 Monde, Dance International and Dance Magazine.

Dutch choreographer and contemporary teacher Didy Veldman trained in Amsterdam.

She danced with Scapino Ballet, Ballet Genève, Rambert, and co-founded Alias Company in 1992. She began choreographing in 1987, creating work for all four companies. Veldman left Rambert in 2000 to concentrate on her choreographic career and has created over 45 works for 27 international companies including Birmingham Royal Ballet, Goteborg Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, Introdans NL, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal.

Choreographer, Not so Strictly

In 2016 she started her own dance company Humanoove with support from Arts Council England and private donors. She is currently working on her third production called @Home.

Veldman enjoys working with students and has been teaching and creating for vocational schools over the years, working with English National Ballet School, The Royal Ballet School, Rambert School, Palucca Hochschule in Dresden, Paris Opera School, Ecole Supérieure de Danse de Cannes de Rosella Hightower and the school at Jacob’s Pillow in the USA. She has been part of the Prix de Lausanne on numerous occasions as a contemporary teacher and choreographer and is currently The Royal Ballet School’s Contemporary Programme Manager and teaches the Professional Trainees at English National Ballet School.

In 2021 Veldman created a new work for Transitions Dance Company as well as Cannes Jeune Ballet, she has re-staged Is to Be for The Royal Ballet School and worked with The Royal Ballet on Draft Works. She is preparing a new creation for her own Company Humanoove which premieres at the end of September 2021 and has been working with Natalia Osipova on a new creation which will premiere at the end of this year.

Andrew McNicol

Sir Frederick Ashton

Andrew McNicol is a freelance British choreographer noted as a “rising star” (BBC News) and “talented beyond his years”.

Born in Hull, his choreographic work began whilst studying at The Royal Ballet School, where he won the Kenneth MacMillan Choreographic competition.

He later completed his formal training with an MA at Central’s Professional Choreographic Programme. Andrew has choreographed internationally including for Joffrey Ballet, the Royal Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Northern Ballet, BalletX, twice for New York Choreographic Institute and Tulsa Ballet among others. He was the recipient of the 2018 BalletX Choreographic Fellowship and created Requiem, hailed as “powerful and sensitive” (Main Line Times). In 2019 he created Yonder Blue for Joffrey Ballet receiving critical acclaim: “gives a sense of awesome wonderment” (Chicago Tribune); “A rare gem of a ballet that transcends the here and now” (Lynn Shapiro). Andrew is a versatile choreographer, alongside creating narrative and abstract modern ballets for the stage he has also created award winning dance works for film and site-specific projects, most notably for the 2012 London Olympics. Recently he founded the McNicol Ballet Collective (MBC), a modern ballet collective to forge artistic collaborations across arts disciplines that use the rich language of ballet to address contemporary themes. MBC has already been hailed as “a daring project from McNicol... that of course, only adds to the excitement” (Culture Whisper).

Founding Choreographer of The Royal Ballet Frederick Ashton (1904–88) was one of the most influential dance figures of the 20th century. In his work with the Company he developed the distinctive ‘English style’, and left a vast corpus of works that are regularly performed by The Royal Ballet and companies around the world, among them La Fille mal gardée, Marguerite and Armand and Symphonic Variations.

Choreographer, Grace & Gravity

Morgann Runacre-Temple

Choreographer, God’s Away on Business Morgann Runacre-Temple trained at Central School of Ballet and London Contemporary Dance School and was a recipient of DanceEast’s Rural Retreat Award for Future Dance Leaders. She is a freelance choreographer and movement director and has made work for Northern Ballet, Scottish Ballet, English National Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Ballet Ireland, Ballet Central, The Print Room, Images Ballet Company, Royal Ballet Participation, BBC Young Dancer of the Year and Wilton’s Music Hall. In partnership with Jessica Wright, she directs and choreographs dance films. In 2021 Scottish Ballet’s first Feature film The Secret Theatre which they directed, won Best Dance Film at the Critics Circle National Dance Awards and Jess and Morgs were also nominated for Outstanding Creative Contribution for their dance film work.

Choreographer, Les Rendezvous

Ashton was born in Ecuador to British parents. He first saw ballet when Anna Pavlova performed in Lima in 1917, later claiming ‘from the end of that evening I wanted to dance’. In England Ashton was tutored by Leonid Massine and made his choreographic debut for Marie Rambert in 1926. After working with Rambert and Ida Rubinstein, in 1935 he was appointed Resident Choreographer of Vic-Wells Ballet (later The Royal Ballet)

by Ninette de Valois. With De Valois Ashton played a crucial role in determining the course of the Company and The Royal Ballet School. In 1963 he took over from De Valois as Director of the Company and in addition to choreographing introduced several significant works, including Bronislava Nijinska’s Les Noces and George Balanchine’s Serenade, and commissioned Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet. He retired in 1970 but continued to choreograph throughout his life, producing his last major work, Rhapsody, in 1980.

Ashton’s style is distinctive for its épaulement (the way the head and shoulders are held) and fleet footwork. All his works combine elegance with breathtaking technical demands.

Christopher Carr

Repetiteur for Les Rendezvous Christopher Carr is Guest Principal Ballet Master of The Royal Ballet. He has rehearsed and staged some forty works in the Company’s repertory, including The Sleeping Beauty, La Fille mal gardée, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Swan Lake, Coppélia, Ondine, Cinderella and numerous one-act ballets.

He has taught and staged works for leading companies around the world.

He grew up in Yorkshire in a coalmining family. He trained in Barnsley with Mavis Burrows before entering The Royal Ballet School. In 1967 he graduated into The Royal Ballet Touring Company and in 1970 transferred to the Company, where he was promoted to Soloist in 1975

and then to Senior Soloist. As a dancer with the Company his repertory included many corps de ballet, Soloist and Principal roles.

He was appointed Assistant Ballet Master in 1983 and made a répétiteur the following year. He became Ballet Master in 1988 and Rehearsal Director in 2001, and in 2007 elected to take his current position.

Welsh Lighting Designer Charlie has lit theatre and opera in the UK and Internationally.

Fred De Faye

Sound Designer A sonic artist and composer, and member of the People Show theatre, Fred learnt his trade in Paris as a recording engineer, moving to England to become the personal recording engineer of the Eurhythmics.

Through his career he has mixed and recorded albums for the likes of Bob Dylan, The Prodigy, Depeche mode, Tom Petty, David Gray and many more. He has sound designed for theatrical experiences created by Punchdrunk, Burberry, Tods and Philipp Plein fashion shows in Paris, London and Milan. Fred has also composed music for choreographer Garance Marneur, on behalf of Levy Dance in San Francisco, for Alone Together and Pull Me Closer part of the SF International Art Festival 2017.

Touring as a live sound engineer, his broad client base includes choreographer Lee Anderson, Patti Smith, and the KLF Welcome to the Dark Ages. Fred has worked with Shobana Jeyasingh for the past eight years.
