STATUE OF A WORSHIPPER Mesopotamian, 2700-2500 B.C. (Early Dynastic II period) Gypsum H: 82 cm Complete statue in excellent condition, except for the head, now lost, and the chipped shoulders.

Much larger than the average size and entirely carved from a single block of gypsum, the statue represents a male figure standing on a thick circular base. The arms are bent and raised to the chest, where the hands are clasped together (unlike the standard custom, the left hand, with the stiff, slightly incised fingers, covers the right hand). All around the neck, there are traces of a circular pattern in very light relief, showing small beads (?) in the back and longer, narrower shapes in the front, the nature of which is difficult to determine: it is probably a necklace rather than a beard and/or hair (worshippers usually have a shaved head or a long thick beard and hair in relief with braids). The shape of the bust is somewhat stylized, with the muscles of the chest indicated by a light modeling, the arms are long and bent at an acute angle, the shoulders are rounded; on the back of the statue, the spine is indicated by a faint central groove, while slant marks indicate the ribs on both sides. The legs are entirely hidden to below the knees by a long skirt (kaunakes, the archetypal Sumerian ceremonial garment) fastened at the waist by a belt resembling a thick bulge: its end protrudes at the back, on the left side, and forms a sort of tail decorated with incised, wavy tufts. The upper kaunakes is entirely smooth, while its lower part is adorned with a row of engraved fringes pointing downwards, like inverted cones; the lower edge is cut straight. On the right shoulder, an inscription probably in five columns, now almost completely erased, would probably indicate the name and function of the devotee.

The balance and stability of this piece are reinforced by the buttress that connects the lower part to the base.

The overall attitude of the figure corresponds to that of the “worshippers” (Beter, in German, orant in french), which are among the oldest and most famous types of Mesopotamian sculpture. Excavations in Mesopotamian temples have revealed a large number of male and female figurines that devotees commissioned and dedicated to various deities, as a testimony of their faith and to arrange for a constant presence near the deity (endowed with speech, these figures might address prayers to the deity on behalf of their owners). These statues were offered by prominent figures of the court or of the administration, by the members of the religious staff, by wealthy people (merchants, for instance), or even by members of the royal families.

In this iconographic scheme, largely widespread in the Mesopotamian world of the 3rd millennium B.C., the realistic and natural vision of the body appears subsidiary: the statues all differ from each other by their facial shapes, although they are not purely portraits, since the features generally remain idealized and impersonal. Stylistically and typologically, this representation recalls the famous figures found mainly in the square temple at Tell Asmar (ancient Eshnunna), in the Diyala valley (an affluent of the Tigris, not far from modern-day Baghdad), which are characterized by rather linear and stylized shapes.

STATUETTE OF A HARE

Proto-Sumerian, Jemdet Nasr period (late 4th-early 3rd millennium B.C.) Pink stone L: 5.2 cm

Virtually intact statuette, despite superficial surface wear. Carved from a semicircular pebble provided with a protuberance marking the neck and the head. Hole for the suspension ring pierced vertically through the body of the hare, from the back to the mid-legs. Eyes probably inlaid with semiprecious stones, now lost.

An animal carved in the round with slightly naive outlines but with a good rendering of the shapes and of the anatomical details (incisions for the legs and the head, well rounded volumes for the shape of the body and of the haunches).

A pointed muzzle, rather large ears in the shape of elongated leaves, and muscular hind legs which enable us to identify this figurine as a hare or a rabbit (in ancient times, and even later in the Classical period, no difference was made between these two species). The animal is crouching, with its legs folded under its body and its ears drawn back, in an attitude of apparent repose : the power of the hind legs and their folded position, yet ready to bound, nevertheless translate the constant attention that these small mammals give to their environment, as if the sculptor had wished to emphasize that flight is their main defense against the attack of a predator.

The perforation indicates that the piece served as an amulet : it would have been worn suspended from a necklace or offered as an ex-voto in a shrine.

Bovids, caprids and felines certainly are the animals most often represented by Mesopotamian artists, while hares, although present from the Neolithic period, are more rarely featured subjects : among the first examples, one should mention a stone vessel from Tell Buqras (7th-6th millennium B.C.), as well as the seal of Tell Brak and the statuette of Geneva, dated to the Jemdet Nasr period.

Rabbits and hares were a significant source of food and their bones were used for the manufacture of tools such as needles, awls, etc.; the possible symbolic value remains unknown for such a remote period, but one can imagine a meaning linked to the animal’s extraordinary capacity for reproduction or to its timid, discreet nature.

Due to its remarkable artistic qualities, this figurine can be considered as an excellent example of Near Eastern animal sculpture of miniature size, which included all sorts of species (bears, monkeys, vultures, frogs, hedgehogs, fishes, insects, etc.) : the lifelike appearance and sense of vivacity that it conveys reflect the proximity and complicity that the inhabitants of ancient Mesopotamia had with the natural world surrounding them, together with their ability to observe it and reproduce its details.

USHABTI WITH THE NAME OF REMENTYOU Egyptian, late New Kingdom (Ramesside period, 13th-12th century B.C.) Yellow limestone H: 21 cm Statuette in good condition, but the lower legs are lost; minor chips on the body. Traces of light blue pigment (or frit?) on top of the skull, between the locks of the wig.

Larger than the average size of an individual figurine, this piece also differs by the use of stone instead of faience, as well as by its remarkable artistic qualities: slender, elongated proportions, finely modeled body, delicate and elaborate incisions.

According to a widely attested iconography, this figurine is mummiform: it is represented standing upright, with the legs together, and wrapped in a shroud. The hands, the only detail of the body to be uncovered, are crossed on the chest and are provided with several attributes: the tools for agricultural work (here, two A-shaped hoes, instead of the flabellum more widespread in the iconography of ushabtis), the seed sacks (two bags that are not carried on the back) and a stick. The head is covered with a long tripartite wig, whose locks are perfectly indicated by vertical lines. The face, with the rounded outline and serene features, is delicately modeled (full lips, almost “smiling” mouth, small nose, made-up eyes and ample eyebrows): the short beard, almost a stump, is a special trend, rarely documented (examples showing the same type of beard date to the late New Kingdom, to the 19th or 20th dynasty: among the figures whose ushabtis often wear this type of beard, one should mention Prince Khaemwaset, one of the sons of Ramesses II).

The very elaborate adornment is composed of a pair of circular earrings (?), of a large multi-rowed bead necklace and of a heart-shaped pendant.

The back of the statuette, while being well modeled, shows no anatomical detail or inscriptions.

A long inscription occupying at least seven columns indicates the name and function of the owner of this figurine and contains an excerpt from chapter 6b of the Book of the Dead in its long version: the name of the figure was Rementyou (a name that is not documented in other Egyptian sources) and he was an administrator or an inspector.

As always the case, the text (which is incomplete here because of the break) shows a number of interesting variations compared to the Book of the Dead, among which one would mention: a) the great importance attributed to the god Amon (unusual in the Book of the Dead); b) the presence, probably by confusion, of the sign of “the sail” (lines 3-4, indicating “the breeze” instead of the usual text “to flood the banks”) and the sign of “the censer” (line 4, “making fumigations”, whose meaning remains obscure). The inscription can be translated as: “Words spoken for the Ka of the Administrator (Inspector) Rementyou, justified, receive life from Amon, (thou art) come in the presence of Amon with everything good, perfect, pure, the fresh water and the wine (it) that makes the breeze for him (in) peace, which makes the fumigation to his nostril (?), for the Ka of the Osiris of Rementyou. O, Ushabti, if I am counted (for the chore) in (...) everything we do in the necropolis...”

From the late New Kingdom on, the iconography and purpose of the ushabtis seem to have been standardized: from substitutes for the deceased, these figurines became slaves at that time and served for their masters in the chores of daily life (in the most humble tombs, the funerary figurines were simply made of terracotta or raw clay covered with a white slip).

Aegean (Cyclades), Early Bronze Age II (middle of the 3rd millennium B.C.) Marble H: 41.8 cm Perfectly preserved statuette; only the tips of the feet (probably directed downwards) broken. Traces of abrasion left while manufacturing the piece (especially in the notch between the legs) and shadows in very slight relief indicate the painted details (left side of the face, eyes).

An outstanding statuette for several reasons: much larger than the average size, artistic qualities, excellent state of preservation, remains of paint, all elements that place it among the masterpieces of Cycladic sculpture.

The statuette, with slightly protruding breasts and lines of the pubic triangle emphasizing her femininity, is represented in the usual attitude of Cycladic “idols”: nude and standing upright (but the position of the feet would not allow it to stand by itself), legs slightly bent, arms clasped on the belly; the head tilted backwards, the face (on which the nose only is sculpted) featuring a regular, oval shape.

The elegant and smooth proportions are also emphasized by thin linear incisions or by slightly rounded volumes, which express other anatomical details: shape of the face, base of the neck, spine, lower buttocks, knees, fingers. The deep notch between the legs shows a thin, elongated opening between the calves.

Typologically, this is a beautiful example of a canonical “FAF (Folded-Arms Figure)” statuette. It belongs to the so-called “Spedos” variety, which represents the highest level of prehistoric Cycladic sculpture, towards the middle of the 3rd millennium B.C.: P. Getz-Gentle precisely classifies it in the “late Spedos” phase (2500-2400 B.C.) and, considering its size, its shape and its style, attributes this image to the “Rodgers Sculptor”, an artist known for two other statuettes, one of which is housed in Athens, at the N.P. Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art, the other in an American collection.

Nowadays, prehistoric Cycladic art is famous mostly for these statuettes, whose design is both simple and attractive. Despite the strong beauty and seductive power they convey to the modern artistic taste, these figurines still keep many secrets, since their real purpose remains unknown.

These “idols” (which come almost exclusively from necropolises, when the location of their discovery is known) have been successively seen as concubines for the deceased, mourners, substitutes for human sacrifices, nurses for the deceased, representations of revered ancestors, toys to be taken to the afterlife, or figures enabling or helping the transition to the afterlife, etc.; other scholars connect them with the Great Mother, a goddess of procreation and fertility, worshiped from the Neolithic in the Near East, in Anatolia and in Central Europe.

Behind their remarkable unity of style, these statuettes probably hide various purposes that cannot be clearly understood today. According to P. Getz-Gentle, recent studies on their polychrome decoration allow us to attribute to them a more active role than previously thought: these figures would probably have embodied a protective being, definitely feminine and maternal (related to a sort of a patron saint, according to P. Getz-Gentle), who commanded natural phenomena and events that were most often inexplicable to the ancients: the cycle of life, the astronomical phenomena, the seasonal cycle and the fertility of the land, the sea, etc.

ORNAMENT WITH THE MASTER OF THE ANIMALS Western Asia, middle of the 3rd millennium B.C. Arsenical copper (?)

H: 15.8 cm Complete object, cast in solid copper; probably made from two or three elements which were then assembled (figural scene, pin, head of snake). Surface largely covered with a thick, grainy green patina.

Composed of: a) a long cylindrical stalk, soldered at right angles to the center of the upper ornament and that probably fulfilled a functional purpose, to attach the object to its original support; b) the sconce, triangular in shape when seen frontally and flat (only the heads of the oxen, partially hollow, emerge in three dimensions from the background of the scene), displaying a complex image featuring two humped bovids (zebus), whose necks are directed downwards and that stand upright on a flat ground represented by a single horizontal line. The two bovids are back to back and support, seated on their croups, a human figure with buttocks placed on heels: according to a widespread iconography in the contemporary Near Eastern world, this is probably a man with his head seen in profile, his nude torso seen frontally and dressed only in a skirt fastened at the waist by a belt. He has long hair and holds in his hands two snakes with sinuous bodies, which rise vertically and open their mouths. Above the head of the man is a mysterious semicircular object: it might be either a pair of horns (or horned headgear) or the crescent moon, a symbol of the Near Eastern moon god Sin. In both cases, the scene would therefore refer to the religious sphere. A third snake emerges horizontally from the ornament, between the two bovids. In the rear, the object is flat. The areas between the various actors of the scene are partially decorated in openwork and show metal off-cuts left in a somewhat hasty way along the edges.

The superficial wear of the surface does not enable us to appreciate the incised or modeled details that embellished the figures, but the style of the composition clearly resembles the one known as “Intercultural style”, that recent archaeological discoveries in the region of Kerman (central Iran) have largely enriched, or even reassessed. In the iconography of this style, the same figure as in our example appears several times, especially on chlorite vessels (cylindrical vase in the British Museum, trunconical vases in the Louvre and in a Japanese collection, for example), but also in small sculpture (bronze statuette in the Louvre): the man, who is probably a mythological being but whose exact nature cannot be specified (god, “hero”, etc.), would be a sort of master of the animals dominating both domesticated species, represented by the bovids (whose economic importance was fundamental within the framework of Near Eastern ancient cultures), and wild animals, embodied by the snakes.

Despite the presence of the central stem, however, the structural massiveness, the sense of strength and the fact that the scene is arranged perpendicularly to the stem do not allow us to relate this piece to the copper pins of the Bronze Age, some examples of which reach considerable dimensions (see the pin with a figural scene, housed in the Louvre). Our example, which does not seem to have any close parallel, rather suggests a use as a decorative element, offered perhaps as an ex-voto to a shrine, to be placed on a large support such as a piece of woodwork, a door, a wall or more generically an element of architecture which remains undetermined.

CLASSICAL GREEK FEMALE STATUE Eastern Greece (Lydia?), second-third quarter of the 5th century B.C. (460-430 B.C.) Marble H: ca. 130 cm Good state of preservation. Headless statue, the feet, hands and left forearm are lost; minor chips. Beautiful white marble with gray veining and uniform beige-gray patina.

A statue of a life-size standing woman, seen frontally (the back is completed, but only with superficial details, without the volumes of the front). The weight of the body is supported by the left leg, while the right leg is slightly bent, resulting in an apparent gentle swaying motion, especially visible from behind. The left arm was bent and directed towards the viewer, the right is bent and raised: no trace of any attribute is preserved.

The woman is dressed in: a) a long linen chiton finely pleated on the neckline, on the right shoulder and on the ankles; b) a thick woolen cloak (himation) that wraps her entire body, passing under the right armpit and covering the opposite shoulder, while, passing under the left arm, the edge of the fabric falls vertically and terminates in undulate folds: despite the chronological lag, this way of wearing the himation still recalls the ancient korai (statues of young women) dressed in the Ionian style; c) a thin veil which covered the head, whose folds and edges are visible on the shoulders and behind the neck. Only two finely twisted braids falling to the breast are left from the hair.

This work is of the highest artistic level, characterized by correct proportions, by the well rendered position and, from a stylistic point of view, by a rich and precise study of the arrangement of the folds. Seen in profile, the statue lacks depth, despite the moving arm and the slightly raised leg, as if the sculptor had chosen to emphasize the importance of the frontal view in the structure of the work.

On the neckline and on the right shoulder, the play of folds is rich and diversified, its low relief revealing the delicacy and transparency of the linen. The thick wool of the himation, however, is translated by the deep curves that diagonally cross the body of the woman and form regular curves under the right arm.

Stylistically, this statue can be related to a group of works sometimes known as “Cyclado-Ionic”, in which one recognizes strong eastern Greek influences and which mostly includes funeral reliefs and steles coming from Thessaly, from Boeotia and from the Ionian world, up to Lydia: with other chronologically close Thessalian steles of the National Museum of Athens, one can especially mention, among the closest parallels, a stele from Sardis (the capital city of ancient Lydia), now housed in Izmir, dated to the middle of the 5th century B.C. It represents the image of a worshipper (cf. gesture of the right hand) rather than a priestess, in an attitude similar to that of our statue, wearing the same type of garments.

CHANCEL PLAQUE

Christian art, ca. 6th century A.D. Marble Dim: 88 x 146 cm Plaque made of fine, white marble, complete but reassembled (ten fragments); pieces of a red fabric still partially preserved. A finely modeled surface, playing on the various levels and on the rhythms of the carved parts and large smooth surfaces. Edges 5.3 centimeters thick, scratched with tight zigzag lines to increase the adhesion of the mortar.

The surface is decorated in very low relief on both sides. Side A shows two crosses pattées mounted on globes on either side of a cross pattée inscribed in a hexagon. The whole pattern is framed by a double molding. Side B is adorned with a large cross pattée inscribed in a framed circle.

This plaque was part of a low barrier made of stone slabs and pilasters. It was held in place between two grooved pilasters and would fit into a grooved base. A heavy, grooved parapet made of stone terminated the barrier, adding a weight to reinforce the stability of the whole piece.

Chancels in this sense (cancelli,-orum, in Latin) are barriers of wood, metal or open-worked stone or formed of large slabs.

Romans placed them in different public or private buildings to punctuate and organize the space.

They were an architectural element of the first Imperial civil basilicas of the 4th century. They served to delineate the area reserved for the magistrates (judges, orators). A pragmatic way to promote and to protect the magistracy in a public building where power was wielded, they were also used to express a hierarchy between the common people, the magistrates and the soldiers, as attested by the various barriers, probably made of metal, which separated the crowd in front of Emperor Theodosius I when he appeared in the official lodge of the Hippodrome (see reliefs on the base of the obelisk of Theodosius I (347-395) erected in the Hippodrome of Constantinople).

Following the Edict of Milan by Constantine and Licinius (313), which allowed the free practice of religion in the Roman Empire, Emperor Constantine, converted to Christianity, started the construction of several major basilicas devoted to Christian worship in Rome (St. John Lateran, Santa Maria Maggiore, Basilica of St. Peter), in Constantinople (Church of the Holy Wisdom of God, or Hagia Sophia) and in the Holy Land (Holy Sepulcher, Church of the Nativity). Mausoleums were also built on ancient catacombs in Rome (St. Agnes Outside the Walls, St. Sebastian Outside the Walls,) or for the Imperial tombs of Constance and Helena. Although none of these Christian buildings have been preserved in their original state, they would initially include an area bounded by a barrier (chancel) in their plans. This area was thus reserved for those performing the ceremonies of worship and protected the access to the sacrificial altar.

These barriers fitted in naturally with the function and general plan of the church (elevated choir, double circulation in the choir, martyrium, area going into the nave). They are found in churches dated to the 4th and 6th centuries outside the major centers of power. The excavations beneath the north sector of the Cathedral of St. Peter in Geneva (4th century) have revealed the presence of a chancel placed in front of the apse.

In Eastern churches, the chancel evolved towards an elevation in a colonnade, which was added to the simple barrier creating a templon (as in the Church of St. John of Ephesus, for instance). Later, the choir was completely separated by a wall of icons called an iconostasis. In the West, the chancel sometimes turned into a rood screen in medieval churches.

Today, it is still possible to see examples of barriers from the early Christian and the Justinian period: a mausoleum in the catacombs of the Via Latina, in Rome (early Christian period, probably before the Edict of Milan), in the Church of Santa Sabina, in Rome (5th century, but reconstructed), in the Basilica San Clemente al Laterano, in Rome (12th century, yet the chancel plaques are those of the first basilica of the 6th century), but also in Hagia Sophia at the level of the first gallery (6th century, Lodge of the Empress).

The High Middle Ages and the Romanesque period continue the tradition of the marble plaque barrier by adapting the patterns to the style of the time (Duomo of San Ciriaco, in Ancona, 12th century). The Basilica of San Marco, in Venice, turned towards Byzantium which it admires and repels at the same time, copied in the 11th century the motifs of the marble plaques of the 6th century that were in the Constantinian basilica of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople.

Many marble plaques coming from balustrades or ancient choir barriers have been preserved, dated mostly to the 11-12th century. The example presented here belongs to the Byzantine production of the 6th century and echoes the plaques of the basilicas of San Clemente al Laterano, in Rome, and of San Marco, in Venice.

BUST OF A DIGNITARY WITH PECTORAL Egyptian, late 6th-5th century B.C. (26th-27th Dynasty, late Saite period-Persian period) Graywacke H: 18.4 cm Bust and head carved from a block of greenish gray graywacke. Both arms and legs lost, nose chipped. The modern base bears the stamp of Inagaki, the Paris-Based Japanese base-maker who was mainly working between the two world wars.

The image represents a youthful male figure with a muscular and finely modeled chest, who was probably standing upright. At the back, a large pillar that served to strengthen the balance of the statuette retains an inscription in two columns, still perfectly decipherable on the upper part, but which no longer enables us to identify the figure. The translation is: “The companion, the administrator of the palace, in charge of the secret (...) the master of the Oaubet, master...” (the term Oaubet, meaning “pure room”, concurrently indicates a sacred workshop, the place of embalming and the secret sanctuary of Osiris).

The back of the wig bears a modern graffito reproducing three Latin characters, which read “POE”, but whose meaning remains obscure: it might have been incised by an unknown traveler of the 19th century, who would have seen the figure in Egypt, perhaps on a kôm in the Nile Delta.

The head is covered with a long thick wig, not tripartite but in one piece, whose outline is rounded on the shoulders and in the back, following a rare type attested in the 18th Dynasty. The remarkable modeling of the face is rendered by finely rounded volumes: the almond-shaped eyes are large, the brows are in light relief, the lips are full, the nose is broad and the ears are clearly visible. The expression, with the idealized features, is serene and calm.

Suspended from a necklace, the man wears a rectangular, engraved breastplate representing a small scene. On the right, a divine figure, Neith (a goddess who embodies the liquid world from which all life originates, recognizable by the red crown), is seated on her throne. In front of her, a standing king (wearing the blue crown which is the battle helmet of the Pharaoh) shows her a small cup containing a seated figure characterized by the feather on the head. The image depicts the central moment of the daily ritual with the offering of Maat (the goddess of justice and cosmic balance), which summarizes all the special offerings. Along with its religious meaning, this scene may also convey a historical value: Neith, the goddess of Sais, the capital city of the 26th Dynasty, was indeed a warlike figure, who also would be linked to Athena, hence the blue crown (especially prized by the kings of this dynasty) of the sovereign. These considerations enable us to confirm the dating of this work to the middle of the first millennium B.C., as a direct testimonial of the late Saite period or a slightly later “nostalgic” work which recalls a period known for its independence.

PORTRAIT OF A REPUBLICAN CITIZEN Roman, 1st century B.C. Marble H: 25.5 cm Head in overall good condition and well preserved face. Back of the skull partially lost and nose broken, wear on the temple and on the left cheek.

A life-size head representing an elderly man, whose face is marked by the wrinkles and heavy folds of the skin: as is the case for many portraits of the Republican period, the impressive realism is the most remarkable stylistic feature. It would belong to the honorary or funeral statue or bust of a high-ranking social figure (probably a patrician, whose identity is currently unknown), who lived at about the same time as Julius Caesar.

A work of outstanding artistic quality, this head has a clear structure (the shape of the skull is well defined, with high cheekbones, a strong jaw and well modeled eyebrows), with a broad and rounded face. The facial features strongly marked by the wrinkles of the forehead and of the nose area, the slightly sunken cheeks with the loose skin and the prominent, strong chin not only indicate the age of the man but also suggest that he was used to commanding people, as a highranking social figure and/or a Latin pater familias. The slightly asymmetrical eyes and the piercing, stern gaze confirm this impression. The short hair covers the head like a skullcap, detailed in multiple wavy small locks arranged irregularly on the entire surface.

By the late Republican period, the tradition of the portrait (imago, in Latin) was well established in Roman art, both because of the influence of Hellenistic Greek artists and because of the Italic custom of revering the masks and busts of the ancestors. Heads of this type, known as “Republican” by modern scholars, are characterized by a marked naturalism, which translates into the choice of the subject (most often, the man represented is an old, rather than an adult male) and into faces with strongly emphasized, sometimes caricatured individual features (prominent bones of the eyebrows, sunken cheeks, folds of the skin, wrinkles). These characteristics allowed the sculptor to visually express some of the ideals of contemporary society, such as wisdom, experience, respect for laws, etc.

In Republican Rome, a series of very specific legal norms (ius honorum et imaginum) regulated the right to exhibit private portraits in public: these works had a honorary or funeral purpose.

Images of famous figures were exhibited in frequented places, especially in the forum or in the sanctuaries, with a view to political propaganda or to promote the image of the family (gens) to which belonged the person represented. The tradition of showing iconic individual portraits or statues also prevailed in the private sphere, since the patrician households generally possessed their gallery of ancestors: these images were a major element for the transmission of the virtues of the gens from one generation to the other, playing a fundamental role in funeral ceremonies.

COLUMN KRATER DEPICTING A DEPARTURE SCENE (FLORENCE-BOREAS GROUP) Classical Greek (Attic), middle of the 5th century B.C. Ceramic H: 37.1 cm Vessel complete but reglued, with small repairs; paint in a good state of preservation. Decorated in the red-figure technique.

A very large vessel with a heart-shaped body, a low, straight neck, a flat, broad lip, a foot molded at two levels. Cylindrical and vertical handles which give this type of krater its name.

A lip decorated with a stylized plant pattern (lotus with stems), beautiful palmettes drawn between the volutes on the small plaques located above the handles. The two scenes painted in the metopes, delineated by a reserved edge decorated with rows of dots and languettes, depict activities of daily life. The main scene includes three figures: a) a young man, at the center, nude but with the attributes of the traveler, i.e. the petasus (a wide-brimmed hat) and the chlamys (a cloak fastened at the neck or on the shoulder), seen frontally, stands in front of his horse, which seems to slowly move to the right: the attitude of the young man, with his swaying hips and his bent, raised right arm leaning on spears, recalls the large statues of heroes or athletes from the early Classical period; b) on the left, apparently behind the horse, is an adult man with a thick beard, wearing a large cloak, who makes a gesture with his right hand towards the young man; c) the scene closes with the figure of an old man, characterized by a white beard and hair, wrapped in a himation (cloak) and holding a stick in his raised right hand.

By analogy with the depictions of the departure of warriors, this scene probably represents the departure for a military campaign of a young horseman, who takes leave of his family, represented by the generations of the father and of the grandfather (the female figure holding the libation cup does not appear here). Rarer than the departures of hoplites (foot soldiers of the Greek army) and sometimes difficult to distinguish from scenes of dokimasia (inspection of the riders and horses, recounted by Aristotle), images of the departure of horsemen are nevertheless observed in contemporary Attic pottery, especially on the outside of cups.

In the metope of the reverse side, more hastily painted, three figures are quietly conversing: two young men holding a stick are turned towards the center, in the direction of a young woman (identified by her hair), and appear to talk with her peacefully. Although there is no clear indication, this scene might be of an erotic nature.

Despite the slightly stereotypical, hasty style and subject of the reverse side, this krater is of a high artistic quality: the shape is well proportioned and turned, the main scene is finely balanced, rich in painted details that embellish the fabrics (play of folds) and the anatomy of the figures and of the horse.

The vessel has not been attributed to a specific artist yet, but it would be the work of a Classical painter who lived in Athens in the middle of the 5th century B.C., almost at the same time as the construction of the Parthenon. His style is related to that of the painters of the Florence-Boreas group, to which he would belong: acknowledged by J.D. Beazley, these artists were specialized in the production and decoration of kraters and large vessels of the same type as ours.

The krater, one of the most important and typical vessels of Attic pottery in the 5th century B.C., was the centerpiece of the area dedicated to the Greek banquet. It contained a mixture of wine and water that was consumed by the guests at the symposium. This mixture was then poured with a ladle into jugs (oenochoe) or directly into cups, and served to all participants.

STELE WITH A COUPLE AND THEIR CHILD Egyptian, Old Kingdom (5th-6th Dynasty, 2500-2200 B.C.) Painted limestone Dim: 84 x 48 x 21 cm Stele carved from a rectangular block, with a deep niche and three figures in relief. Back and sides of the block polished; traces of the working tools of the sculptor largely visible. Rich polychromy (figures, garments, architecture) in a remarkable state of preservation; colors used are gray/black, black, ocher, brown/red, white.

Scene framed by an architecture composed of two thin, long columns ending in the shape of an ogive and supporting a horizontal element and a very low “roof”; ocher pigment with red lines for the roof, red and white pigment with black lines for the columns.

Three figures painted in gray/black and standing in a strictly frontal pose emerge from the background of the stele. As is often the case in Egyptian sculptures dated to this period, the shapes and proportions are slightly naive, but the anatomy and clothing are richly detailed, with vivid polychromy and many carved features: a) on the left, the man has broad shoulders (developed and finely modeled pectoral and arm muscles) and strong legs, with the kneecaps and the shinbones in relief. His arms follow his body and he holds an enigmatic circular object (made of fabric?) in each of his clenched hands.

He wears a flared wig with a middle parting entirely painted in black. He is dressed in an unstarched loincloth held by a belt and in a leopard skin (an allusion to a possible religious function of the figure?) fastened on his left shoulder and partially covering his torso and the loincloth (markings of the fur, tail and head of the cat are painted on the yellow/ocher background). The adornment is composed of a wide necklace and of a pair of large bracelets. The tanned skin of the man is rendered by the brown/red paint; b) next to his right leg stands an entirely nude boy, with black hair and a tanned skin: with his raised left hand, he touches the leg of his father; c) on the right, the scene is completed by the mother, who primarily differs by the lighter color of her skin. Her proportions are very feminine, with a slender and curvy figure emphasized by the tight-fitting tunic and the well rounded breasts. In a charming gesture, she passes her right arm behind the back of her spouse and holds him with her hand, which appears on the right shoulder of the man. Her sleeveless garment seems to reach her neck and is decorated with a rich, regular checkerboard pattern (painted in red, black and white), with concentric circles on the breasts and multicolored horizontal stripes on the shoulder pads. She wears the same type of short wig as her husband; her adornment is composed of a high bracelet on her left wrist and of a pair of large bracelets on her ankles.

The names and functions of the figures are known: following the standard of this period, the inscriptions are brief (name and function of the figures) and are placed above the statues (here, for the name of the man and of the woman) or on the pedestal at the feet (child). The woman on this stele is Nebudouyat and she was an administrator of the court workers (Mitret Nebudouyat): due to her function, she was probably closely linked to the royal court. Her husband, whose inscription is more enigmatic, is called Nyankhhenu and he was an administrator of the recitations (?). Beneath the child, the text reads “the scribe Henu”.

Often very vibrant, like here, private scenes of the Old Kingdom were not exposed to the eyes of the living but meant for the tomb and placed in a chapel of worship, only accessible to the priests during funeral ceremonies. They were not individual portraits, stricto sensu, but figures with idealized shapes, respecting precise standards: yet, they all differ from each other, translating the desire of ancient Egyptians to keep their individuality and personality even after death, in the afterlife.

BUST OF A YOUNG DEIFIED FLAVIAN PRINCE

Roman, late 1st century A.D. Marble H: 31 cm Complete bust in excellent condition; currently mounted on a small capital and a cylindrical base with a concave profile (probably dating to the 18th century). Ears and nose of the child barely chipped; head of the eagle now lost. Surface perfectly preserved and polished. A work of great artistic finesse, making this effigy particularly charming.

A life-size bust of a child, who seems to be about four years old. The sculptor has perfectly rendered his young age with several elements: the domed forehead, the short, flattened nose, the somewhat sunken eyes, the full lips and cheeks, the narrow and rounded chin, the wrinkled neck. In addition, the hair covers the head like a thin and light, slightly untidy skullcap. The locks are rounded and wavy on the front of the head, but curly on the nape and arranged in a star from the occiput.

The dreamy, even melancholic expression of the child is accentuated by the position of his head, slightly tilted and turned to his left, with the gaze directed downwards: in such a young child, this attitude probably denotes his early death and hard fate.

A miniature eagle appears at the base of the bust. The bird, with spread wings, flies off to take the boy into the sky.

The symbol is clear: the young deceased is promised apotheosis, admission among the gods. The feathers of the eagle are indicated in a light, almost impressionistic way, which contrasts with the precise and realistic image of the child: one can not exclude the possibility that this detail was later reworked (an acanthus leaf might primarily have been in the place of the eagle: the portrait would have thus served a funerary function only because of the death and deification of the boy).

The style enables us to date this piece to the last decades of the 1st century A.D., during the Flavian period. The remarkable quality of the work and the presence of the eagle indicate that he was a high-ranking, probably Imperial figure: he may therefore be a child of Domitian (Titus, brother of Domitian, had no heirs). The sculptor of the bust suggests that his young model was a crown prince, given the nature of his garment, not a common coat but a military pallium that the child has fastened on his left shoulder. The iconography of apotheosis has a famous precedent in the art of the Flavian period with the ascension to heaven of Titus, carved in relief under the main arch of his triumphal arch located in the Forum.

Historically, the problems concerning the child(ren) of Domitian are complicated and may not have a conclusive solution: according to Suetonius (Life of Domitian, III, 1), his wife Domitia Longina, daughter of Corbulo (a general of the army under Nero), gave him a son in 73 A.D. This child, whose name remains unknown (Vespasian, according to some, Titus Flavius Caesar according to others), reportedly died in infancy before or just after the accession of his father (Domitian came to power in 81 A.D., after the death of Titus), as attested by coinage alluding to his deification and showing, in one example, a young child on a globe, his arms outstretched to the sky and surrounded by seven stars, and in another, a boy standing in front of his seated mother.

According to the interpretations of modern criticism, the birth of two other children, a girl probably in 82 A.D. and another (a boy?) in 90, is possible, but no concrete evidence proves these elements, which remain largely hypothetical: this effigy presumably depicts the only certain heir of Domitian, the one who has been deified and who also appears on the Imperial coins of the Emperor and his wife.

A head of a boy the same age, housed in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, has also been attributed to this young figure: however, it is not certain whether it is an individual portrait, since his features are highly idealized, especially in the eye area.

AMPHORISKOS Mesopotamian, 8th-7th century B.C. Light blue opaque glass H: 10.7 cm Complete vessel; only the lip largely lost. A well preserved surface still retaining its luster, though the original color partially faded to grayish white. Four superficial, thick vertical stripes appearing crosswise on the body suggest the existence of straps (of metal or, more probably, of leather), which allowed the amphoriskos to be suspended from a string.

A core-formed example made of undecorated opaque glass. The body is in the shape of an ogive with a rounded bottom, a thin, almost flat shoulder and a low, cylindrical neck provided with a small lip. The vertical handles, forming small loops, are two simple glass ribbons that were folded (“duck-head handles”) and applied to the vessel at the shoulder.

The core-forming technique of glass manufacture was already known in Mesopotamia and Egypt in the early 2nd millennium B.C. The overall form of the vessel was primarily obtained by modeling roughly purified clay (the core) into the desired shape: this core was then attached to a rod and dipped into molten glass, while rotating and/or stretching the mass on a flat slab. This mass was constantly reheated to maintain the malleability of the glass. The distinctive decoration of colored festoons (yellow or white on a dark background) was finally produced by trailing threads of glass on the body, which could be dragged with a metal pin into a zigzag or feathered pattern. The clay core was mechanically removed after the cooling of the vessel.

The opaque appearance results from the addition of chemical elements to the glass mix, causing the separation of transparent crystals during the cooling of the glass.

This amphoriskos, made highly unusual by the traces of straps on the surface, belongs to a small group of glass vessels that were probably produced in Mesopotamia between the late 8th and the 6th century B.C., examples of which come from sites located both in Assyria and Babylonia. The two widely spread forms are the alabastra and the amphoriskos, which only differ by the profile of their bottom (rounded, but more pointed on the amphoriskos). The shape corresponds to type 8d in the classification established by D. Barag, a form which would derive from the alabaster Egyptian alabastra.

The ancients had certainly noticed that glass is a chemically neutral material that enables the storage not only of food but also, and especially, of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products: small vessels such as this one, which could easily be closed with a cork, wax or fabric lid, would serve to store small amounts of precious perfumes or oils.

An opinion generally prevalent is that this series of vessels produced in the Near East influenced the famous small vases “with festoons” which appeared in the Mediterranean world from the 7th century B.C. onwards (Syro-Palestinian coast, Cyprus, Rhodes, Anatolia, continental and colonial Greek world, Carthage, etc.). The core-forming technique had been gradually abandoned by the late Hellenistic period, due probably to the competition from blown glass technique.

SPOUTED GOBLET WITH INLAYS Proto-Sumerian, Jemdet Nasr period (late 4th-early 3rd millennium B.C.) Limestone, nacre, pink limestone H: 24.6 cm - D: max. 19.5 cm Vessel complete and in excellent condition, despite minor chips. Nacre and pink limestone inlays. Large traces of bitumen in the cracks between the inlays.

A thick-walled goblet without handles, carved from a single block of stone; remarkably regular and symmetrical outline.

Trunconical body, with a linear wall and a rounded upper lip; low, flared foot with a small flat rim, hollow on the inside. The triangular spout, communicating with the interior by a large circular hole, indicates that the vessel was probably intended to contain and to pour consumable liquids.

After an initial polishing, the vessel would probably have been completed on a spinner and rubbed with sand or emery.

The interior has been hollowed out using a wooden drill with a flint or obsidian tip, following a technique which was mostly known through Egyptian representations.

A decoration entirely composed of encrusted geometric patterns: triangles, lozenges, bars and squares arranged in horizontal and vertical friezes, which divide the area into four metopes; in the center of each is a circular rosette with eight pink and white petals. The arrangement of the various patterns is regular and perfectly structured, while all the elements are repeated several times in a specific order; each element of the decoration is attached with bitumen in a preformed area that was carefully carved on the surface of the stone.

Proto-Sumerian and Sumerian craftsmen had become masters of the art of inlays, which they applied to different kinds of objects and materials (stone, wood, bone, metal, etc.): this vessel is an excellent example of this technique. The patterns represented here are part of the linear and abstract repertoire of this type of decoration (other objects are decorated with complex figural scenes). The pattern of the rosette is widespread and observed on other stone vessels, as well as in architecture (terracotta cones used to decorate the walls of buildings) and in woodwork (game tables), etc.

This form, which appears rather isolated in the repertoire of Near Eastern forms because of the neck and of the angular outline, recalls both the famous jugs with a long spout found in many Near Eastern sites and frequently represented in iconography (cult scenes with offerings of liquids) and the trunconical goblets of various sizes and proportions, provided with a hollow triangular foot, whose use in a religious context is also attested by iconography.

As suggested by the comparison with the Proto-Elamite silver statuette representing a kneeling half-bull, half-man creature (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) offering a spouted goblet which is similar to our example (without the foot, however), such vessels were luxury items that belonged either to high dignitaries or to the treasure of a sanctuary: it is thought that they served as exchange presents during official visits or, in a religious context, to make libations to the deity by offering water, wine or oil.

The closest parallels as regards this piece can be found in the large steatite vessels (jugs with a tubular spout for libations, trunconical cups) adorned with similar inlaid geometric patterns and excavated in the ancient city of Uruk, in southern Mesopotamia.

HYDRIA (KALPIS) WITH A PATTERN OF PALMETTES UNDER THE HANDLE Greek, late 5th-early 4th century B.C. Bronze H: 32.4 cm Very well preserved and complete vessel; minor restorations on the body. Surface in perfect condition, covered with a beautiful brownish green patina.

Made of several elements: a body, neck and rim hammered from a single sheet of bronze; handles and base cast separately in solid bronze and soldered to the body.

A large vessel of remarkable technical and artistic quality: elongated and elegant shape with a curved, continuous profile, no ridge at the shoulder (enabling us to classify this piece among the kalpides, a variation of the hydriai that appeared from the late 6th century B.C.). A discoid, flat base (which replaces the usual molded and richly adorned foot, typical of this form) decorated in the lower part with a very specific geometric pattern composed of circles and long stalks arranged as crosses and ending with a sketch of lotus flowers.

The two horizontal handles, circular in section, are smooth and unadorned: they terminate in two large hammered discs that provide a wide area of attachment to the belly of the vessel. The vertical handle, which rises to the rim where it is soldered, is certainly the most interesting element of this piece: it is richly decorated both in the lower part (palmette surmounted by elegant volute stems) and in the upper attachment (palmettes and semi-palmettes with stalks and volutes, with two sculpted roundels at the center of the element); the handle is furrowed by lines in relief.

The lip has a ridge and a rim with a rounded profile.

Hydriai were the archetypal Greek water vessels; made of clay, these bellied vases provided with three grip handles (the two horizontal handles were used for transport, while the vertical handle would allow an individual to lift and tilt the vessel to pour the liquid) were used to store and carry the drinking water needed for domestic supplies, as evidenced by the many scenes painted on Attic pottery from the 6th century B.C. onwards: the vessels were filled at the fountain and carried home by the women on their heads.

Bronze pieces, however, were much rarer and more valuable. They have been uncovered mostly in tombs (hydriai were often used as cinerary urns containing the ashes of the deceased); but they have also been found in sanctuaries, where they were offered as luxury items to the deity (by athletes who had received the hydria as a prize after a victory, or by soldiers victorious in battle, who offered a part of their spoils, etc.) or used in various rituals: the water for the purification or sprinkling of sacrificial animals (the front of the head was washed before sacrifice) was most often stored and transported in hydriai.

Typologically, this piece is characterized by an elongated profile with a modest shoulder and by the presence of a small flat base instead of the foot: these elements, which differ from the archaic hydriai and from those dated to the early 5th century, announce the evolution of forms of the 4th century that can be seen both in ceramic tableware (for example, the hydriai discovered at Olynthus) and in the more luxurious metal versions (such as the bronze oenochoe of the tomb known as the “Tomb of Philip II” found at Vergina, in northern Greece).

HELMET OF A WARRIOR Scythian, 7th or early 6th century B.C. Bronze H: 19 cm Complete helmet in remarkable condition. Solid bronze. Smooth surface with a beautiful green patina. Slight deformation on the right side, near the eyebrow and the ear; minor cracks visible in that area. Lower edge pierced by a series of regular holes.

On the inside, the surface is not polished: to make the helmet more comfortable, the inner face was probably covered with a leather or felt lining.

The shape of this helmet is very simple: a rounded, regular skullcap without any system to protect the face (no cheeks or nose guards). On the front, the edge forms two semicircles that mimic the eyebrows. At the height of the nose, the edge is pointed: a sharp ridge runs up from the front to the extremity of a small loop, most probably designed as a support for a crest or another ornament. In the lower part, the edge is flat and regular, except above the neck, where it is slightly distorted, presumably to facilitate the movements of the head backwards.

Despite its simplicity, the rounded shape would allow the helmet to absorb the impact of blows that would slide on the surface; its biggest inconvenience surely was its heavy weight, which made it uncomfortable and unsuitable for prolonged use.

The precise meaning of the circular holes pierced just above the edge is open to different interpretations: they might have served to attach other protective elements (for the shoulders and the back), or even decorative elements, as evidenced by one of the two specimens found in the Kelermes tumulus no. 2 (south of modern-day Russia), which was adorned with gold diadems. The inner cap might have also been held in place by threads or straps passing through these holes.

Given their tactical choice that almost exclusively favored cavalry, a field in which Scythians were masters, the defensive equipment of Scythian warriors was minimal and mainly limited to the shields that the warriors would carry both when riding and in hand-to-hand combat. In fact, their ability to launch sudden attacks and their fast withdrawals or escapes were their best defense, hence their light weapons, easy to handle (bow with a quiver and arrows, a sword, possibly a shield).

Helmets, breastplates and “cnemids” (leg protections) are therefore rather rare in the Scythian context.

As of the 5th century B.C., the Scythians borrowed different models of defensive equipment from the Greeks and the Thracians: they were either imported or locally made imitations. Helmets of the Attic, Corinthian, Chalcid and Thracian type are attested in several tombs. At that time, probably because of the cost and scarcity of Greek examples, a lighter local model made of metal strips was also developed. Previously, between the 7th and the 6th century B.C., there existed a type of Scythian skullcap helmet made of bronze, referred to as “Kuban” by scholars (deriving from the name of the Caucasus region from which come the largest numbers of preserved specimens). Its distinctive features and its appearance are the same as our headgear, which thus belongs to this group.

Its precise origin is still debated: the known examples are relatively few, but the sites where these helmets were found cover a wide area, ranging from the more western regions (Kelermes, west of the Caucasus) to modern-day Mongolia (Samarkand, Uzbekistan and up to Egiin Gol, in Mongolia).

CARVED PANEL WITH FEMALE AT HER OFFERING TABLE Egyptian, Old Kingdom (3rd Dynasty, 28th-27th century B.C.) Limestone Dim: 64 x 26 cm Low relief carved on a somewhat rectangular and oblong plaque, with a slight discrepancy between the finely worked central panel and the barely flattened and dotted sides. Simply rough-hewn rear.

The relief depicts a woman seated on a chair, the legs of which are carved in the form of a bull’s foot; in front of her is the offering table (bearing six slices of bread and surmounted by two pieces of meat), which precedes the list of her belongings.

Her name, Sen-Reh (a probable abbreviation of Senet-Rehou), is inscribed in large hieroglyphic signs in front of her face.

She is dressed in a long dress fastened on the left shoulder, while her other shoulder is uncovered; the outstretched right arm is directed towards the offering table, while the left arm is bent upwards, with the hand touching the breast (probably due to space limitations, the left hand is smaller than the right). The hair is of a special type, curly and short in the back, but forming long straight locks in the front.

The list of objects, often accompanied by their hieroglyphic names and by an indication of quantity (the lotus plant before lines 1 and 2 is the symbol of the number “one thousand”, the mounded shape on the three last lines indicates “ten”), fills the entire right-hand side of the scene and is divided into seven lines. Among the objects that can be clearly identified are (from top to bottom) mirrors (line 1), vessels containing oil or other liquids (line 2), while the last four lines mention luxury clothes and other vessels. The signs on line 3 are very particular, since they appear to indicate square buildings that could be miniature models of stores or, perhaps, places of worship: the first ones are topped by a bird, while above the two others is an arm (to be read as the verb “to give”?). From the perspective of the script, the absence of determinatives, which is nevertheless normal at such an archaic period, makes understanding more difficult and imprecise.

This stele (a rare type which, despite a certain naivety, gives us important information on the life and beliefs of ancient Egyptians) belongs to a group of reliefs that always represent the same scheme, characterized by the presence of the deceased seated on the left of the depiction, of the offering table and of his/her belongings: during the 2nd and the 3rd Dynasties, these plaques would have adorned a wall of the offering niche of the mastabas.

Such representations probably influenced the related scenes carved on the panel of the famous false door steles (upper part), which, from the following dynasty, became a fundamental element of funerary architecture (especially private) of the Old Kingdom, since they marked the boundary between the world of the living and that of the deceased.

STATUE OF A HORNED OWL Roman, 1st-2nd century A.D. Marble H: 52.2 cm Complete piece, whose surface is worn; tufts of feathers on the head and beak chipped. Inlaid but lost pupils, inserted into the deep cavities of the orbits.

A life-size statue representing a horned owl (which differs from other owls by the tufts of feathers visible atop the head) standing upright with the left foot slightly forward. It is placed on a small rounded base, the irregular surface of which imitates a natural rocky terrain. Carved from a single block with the base, a smaller, square pedestal would serve to attach the statue to its original location, which is currently unknown: the fact that the tail of the bird protrudes from the base might indicate that the statue was placed at the top of a column or on the edge of a wall.

Despite the superficial wear, this piece has remarkable artistic qualities: correct proportions, natural pose and realistic anatomy are the most significant stylistic features of this representation and enable us to relate it to the most beautiful examples of Roman animal sculpture of the Imperial period. The bird, with its head barely turned to the right, its beak ajar, its thick, fluffy plumage and its sharp claws, directs its gaze straight ahead, as if to warn the observer.

In modern research on ancient sculpture, animals hold only a small place, probably because the examples of animal images attributed to great masters are very rare (the most famous are the “Cow Suckling a Calf” attributed to Myron, the creator of the most renowned “Discobolus”, and the “Fallen Lion” by Lysippus). But a simple visit to the animal room of the Museo Pio Clementino in the Vatican (also known as the “Stone Zoo”) or a study of the statues of the Capitoline Museums or of the Torlonia Collection would confirm the importance that sculpted figures or groups representing animals might have had and the artistic level they would have achieved. Unlike our example, however, it is noteworthy that many statues in these collections sometimes were heavily restored in the 18th century.

In ancient texts and representations, horned owls and other owls are hardly differentiated: both nocturnal creatures flying and hunting at nightfall, they were seen as endowed with special powers. With its ability to “see” in darkness, the owl thus became the bird of Athena/Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge. In the area of prediction, in which birds of prey played a leading role, the flight of an owl could be considered a good omen, but its hooting was an omen of misfortune.

In iconography, the most famous owls are certainly those appearing on Athenian coins. But in the Archaic period, vessels modeled in the shape of an owl are also attested. In the visual arts, aside from a statuette of Orpheus accompanied, among other animals, by two horned owls (?), there are no other documented statues of horned owls or other owls.

Nevertheless, these birds are more frequently seen on Roman mosaics, in which they appear as a simple decorative motif among other birds or, most often, with an apotropaic value, such as birds dispelling evil spirits and protecting people from danger (mosaics of El Jem, in Tunisia, and of the Palace of the Conservatives, in Rome).

As a simple hypothesis, one can imagine that this beautiful sculpture, placed on a column or in front of a building, would have served to protect the architecture or its visitors.

FRAGMENT OF AN EROTIC FRESCO PANEL Roman, 1st century A.D. Painted plaster Dim: 53 x 75 cm Reassembled from several fragments, partially restored. Black background with multicolored figures and framing lines.

A panel which belonged to a larger frieze, decorated perhaps with other related scenes. Ground indicated by a light band; upper part delineated by a creamy white horizontal line with ocher and bright red traces that would have been part of the overlaid panel, now lost.

The fragment is decorated with a love scene featuring a coitus a tergo: a kneeling young man, whose muscles are well developed, is taking off his bluish gray cloak with his right arm, while he presses his left hand on the back of the young woman who is just in front of him: the full and feminine shapes of her body correspond to the beauty standards of the Classical world. She wears a red strip of cloth under her breasts, which would have served as a bra (known as a fascia pectoralis to Romans); her adornment is composed of arm and ankle bracelets. In her hands, she holds a large grayish green pillow (?), the only visible element of interior decoration.

The artistic quality of the paint is excellent: the isolated figures perfectly emerge from the black background, the scene is lively and realistic, the attitude and anatomical details (bodies, but also facial expressions) are rendered in a natural way.

Long misunderstood and deliberately rejected by modern critics, sexuality was naturally and peacefully experienced in the ancient pagan world, without repressive feelings.

As demonstrated by the excavations at Pompeii, erotic scenes in Roman painting are often astonishingly realistic and diversified: they appear in places seen as appropriate nowadays, such as the walls of the brothels (lupanar) or bathhouses, but also in private houses (living rooms, bedrooms). In this case, more than simple depictions of daily life, these representations would probably have been linked to religious beliefs regarding the regenerative powers, fertility and fecundity (human and, more generally, natural), and to all the types of behavior supposed to favor them.

In a male-dominated world such as Roman society, marriage primarily served for procreation and it was considered natural for a citizen to seek sexual pleasure outside of the house. This open approach is documented not only by ancient sources (literary texts and graffiti carved on the walls of the houses) but also by many artistic (statues, vessels, wall paintings, etc.) and daily objects, such as oil lamps and “amulets” (phallus-shaped amulets, images of Priapus, etc.); even the shapes of some breads and cakes might sometimes explicitly refer to the sexual world.

BUST OF A MATRON, CONTEMPORARY WITH HADRIAN Roman, 120-140 A.D. Marble H: 43.2 cm Remarkably smooth and matt preserved surface, which perfectly reveals the different anatomical details and the outstanding workmanship. Partially dotted upper skull, certainly completed by an element carved from another block of stone or modeled in plaster.

A hollow bust supported by a flared pillar and terminating, in the front, by a small capital; a cylindrical base with a concave profile. A straight and dotted lower base, with traces of a small rectangular tenon which served to attach the bust to its support.

A portrait, slightly smaller than life-size (about two-thirds), of an elderly woman. Her head slightly turned towards the right shoulder; a long, thin neck with a well balanced musculature; an elongated face, a pointed though weak chin. She is dressed in a light tunic with a cloak, which falls from the left shoulder to the breast, goes back up to the other shoulder, passes behind the neck and descends again to the left side. A differentiated treatment of the folds: a multitude of small vertical lines, close to one another, characterize the fabric of the tunic (woven cotton or linen), while the cloak (wool) is heavier and thicker (ample and deep circular folds).

This representation definitely is a personal portrait, as evidenced by the many individual features emphasized by the sculptor: the eyebrows in relief, the prominent cheekbones, the hollow cheeks, the dimple of the chin, the sunken eyes, the prominent, round nose, the differences on the two sides of the face. The forms are rendered by a precise modeling; sculptural shades enliven the large surfaces of the cheeks, of the neck and of the forehead. The eyes are almond-shaped, with a circular iris and a small hole indicating the pupil (the lachrymal caruncle is modeled in a realistic way, but without using a drill); the mouth is broad and horizontal, with closed lips; the nose is prominent, with small, rounded nostrils; the ears are finely carved. The facial expression is severe and focused, although the gaze seems slightly lost in the distance: this woman was certainly the matrona of a family belonging to the nobility in the Roman period. All the virtues these women were thought to embody are expressed in this portrait: seriousness, authority, sobriety, constancy.

The hair, which is especially elaborate, encircles the forehead in a clear, linear manner. At the occiput, the hair is pulled into a very long, thick braid (in reality, it probably was a hairpiece), which is wrapped seven times around the head, as if the woman was wearing a turban. This large surface is covered with horizontal and zigzag incisions, which clearly indicate the crisscrossed locks. In front of the ears, small curls in low relief are freely carved.

As with many other female portraits, the hair is the most significant feature for the classification of this head. Roman women started to sport such hairstyles, of which many variations can be found, in the early 2nd century A.D.: with or without undulating bangs above the forehead, with or without a bun on the occiput or atop the head, one or more braids, etc.

Sabina, wife of the Emperor Hadrian, was the first to start this trend, but she was followed by many women of the Imperial court, as evidenced by our portrait.

This bust, a complete example for once (because the support is preserved), is an opportunity to recall that this way of reducing a person to his/her upper trunk, known as “bust”, is a Roman invention. According to the Romans, the head, seat of thought, sufficiently represented the personality, just as a few garment features were enough to suggest the social rank and the position occupied by the figure, male or female. For instance, a brooch (fibula) on the shoulder would identify the cloak (paludamentum) of military personnel and thus would classify the model in this category.

Virtually intact scarab, small chips on the edge; gold leaf decoration now lost.

A shape representing the insect in a simplified, but complete fashion, with arched back, linear striated legs in relief, stylized head and finely incised elytra. A flat, oval base, with the classic version of chapter 30b of the Book of the Dead incised in twelve regular lines.

The identity of the deceased is indicated on line 1, with a tight, irregular engraving, suggesting that these objects were mass-produced and personalized at the time of sale, when the sculptor would complete them with the name specified by the acquirer. The name of the owner raises some problems and is not clearly identified: Nes-Imen-Ipet (belonging to Amun of Luxor) or Nes-Ipet-Imen (belonging to the Harms of Amon).

The text reads: “The Osiris Nes-Imen-Ipet, justified, he said: heart of my mother, twice, my heart which appears, do not rebel against me, in front of the pillars, do not reject me in the court, do not be hostile to the keepers of the balance, you are my Ka which is in my belly, Khnum who makes my limbs plenty, you go out to a beautiful place, do not slander my name, among the judges who put men in their place. It will be good for us, good, listen to the generous trial, do not lie against me next to the god, avoid it at any time (?).”

This piece has close parallels dated to the New Kingdom, rather late in the period. As is often the case, the inscription shows some particular variants from the Book of the Dead, among which the most significant is the determinative of the pyramid, reminiscent of the “pyramidons” of Deir el-Medina (see line 9): this would confirm the dating and might even indicate the location of the place of production.

Larger than the usual undecorated amulets-pendants of the same shape, heart scarabs were an essential element of the funerary furniture of Egyptian notables: suspended from the neck or inserted between the strips of the mummy, they would replace the real heart of the deceased, which found its final resting place in one of the four canopic jars. These objects, which can be considered as amulets, were carved from a dark stone (greenish gray, black), generally serpentine, graywacke, steatite, etc. The best quality examples, like our piece, would be decorated with gold leaf strips highlighting the edges and the elytra.

A seat of reason and of personal responsibility, the heart had to testify on the life of the deceased in front of the court of Maat and to allow him/her, if the evidence was favorable, to enter the afterlife: these beliefs explain the presence of the invocation inscribed under the base.

Byzantine, 6th-7th century A.D. Bronze Dim: 1.9 x 1.9 cm

Aside from superficial traces of wear indicating that it was used in ancient times, this object is virtually intact.

A very slim (1-2 mm) weight, square in shape. The decoration (only one side is adorned, the back is smooth and flat) is finely pressed and organized around the central figure of a haloed archangel: standing upright and provided with a long pair of wings, this figure holds the globe in his left hand. In his raised right hand, he has a pole (labarum), surmounted by a circle filled with a stylized cross (originally, the labarum was a military standard belonging to the Roman cavalry: Constantine, after abandoning paganism, adopted it as a Christian symbol and added a cross and the monogram of Christ, the Chi Rho symbol). The archangel is dressed in a tunic and in a cloak draped around his waist and legs. His wings extend from either side of his body; a star shines above his head.

The archangel is flanked by the busts of two emperors, each surmounted by a Byzantine cross: both figures wear the crown with pendants and a cloak fastened on the shoulder by a fibula. In the lower corners, as a counterpart to the two crosses, the letters N and A respectively are the abbreviation of nomisma and the number 1 (A = 1: this weight corresponds to one nomisma).

Such official weights, that senior officials such as prefects were allowed to mint, were meant to serve as a standard measure: the presence of two emperors and the outstanding workmanship may indicate that this weight was produced in an official, or even an Imperial workshop of Constantinople (?).

Glass, lead, bronze and, on rare occasions, silver and gold, were used for the manufacture of standard or commercial weights, which could take any kind of shape (square, circular, octagonal, etc.). The representation of one or more Imperial busts corresponds to a type of weight linked to Imperial propaganda.

The Byzantine duodecimal metric system, established in 309 by Constantine, lasted until the 10th century. It was based on the litra, which could be divided into 72 solidi. The solidus would later be named nomisma, which defines the gold coins minted by Byzantium. The nomisma theoretically weighed between 4.54 and 4.55 grams.

STATUETTE OF HERACLES WITH THE APPLES OF THE HESPERIDES Roman, 1st century A.D. Bronze H: 29 cm Perfectly preserved; right arm lost, feet and lower left leg reassembled; eyes inlaid but lost. Statuette mounted on hollow pedestal in the shape of a molded drum, probably the original base. Brown-colored surface with minor traces of green patina in light relief. Perhaps because of the restorations, the statuette leans backwards.

The figure represents Heracles, the archetypal Greek hero: he is standing upright, the weight of his body supported by his left leg, while the right leg is a bit behind (only the tip of the right foot touches the ground). The right arm followed his body and certainly held an attribute, like the club or the bow. The left arm is bent and directed towards the viewer: in his hand, Heracles holds three spherical objects, which can be identified as the Apples of the Hesperides. Bringing these fruits back, with the long journey to Mount Atlas, was the last of the twelve Labors of the hero.

Here, the head and face of Heracles refer to the usual models of the hero, depicted as a middle-aged male. His hair is short and styled in small wavy locks, his beard is short but thick and a mustache covers his upper lip. His severe, idealized face conveys a deep sense of self-consciousness and confidence.

Stylistically and artistically, this statuette, which can be dated to the early Imperial period, probably to the 1st century A.D., is of the highest quality: the proportions, as well as the natural position and the meticulously rendered anatomical details of the figure, can be compared to the most beautiful bronze figures of the time.

Typologically, this statuette belongs to the numerous variations created by the Roman artists, who were certainly influenced by the Classical or Hellenistic Greek images of Heracles showing the hero standing upright, but in a moment of repose. Despite small differences (attributes, positions of the legs, of the arms, of the head, etc.), the attitude is similar to that of the Chiaramonti Heracles of Boston/Oxford or New York, which are Roman copies after Greek originals. This type still appears in the 3rd century, for example on the sarcophagi representing the Labors of Heracles.

CYLINDRICAL STAND DECORATED IN OPENWORK Roman or Byzantine, 4th-5th century A.D. Rock crystal H: 6.4 cm - D: 4.7 cm Perfectly preserved; minor chips and cracks.

Carved from an entirely hollowed, cylindrical fragment of rock crystal; walls decorated in openwork. It represents a circular architecture supported by six small feet and a profiled base that supports six small columns (each corresponding to one of the feet): these small columns are each surmounted by a capital enriched with three horizontal lines. Six rounded arches, perhaps already prefiguring Romanesque style, connect the columns to one another. The stand terminates in another molded, circular element resembling a sort of neck, probably intended to receive and support a small vessel such as a cup.

This is a beautiful piece, carved with great skill and regularity, which can formally and qualitatively be related to only one other object, from North Africa. Indeed, in the early 20th century, during the excavations at Carthage, several objects of rock crystal were found, which had been hidden in a cistern and which, according to a widely held hypothesis, belonged to the treasure of a church buried in a hurry. Along with a cylindrical stand with six small columns, similar to our example, the small set includes a cup with incised fishes, two statuettes representing a dolphin and a lion, a fragmentary elliptical cup and a silver, oval-shaped spoon. The set is now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York.

Unlike our example, the specimen from Carthage is surmounted by a small circular cup carved from a single piece with the rest of the stand: their precise purpose is still unknown, but it can be imagined that they would serve in a ritual (already Christian, perhaps) as incense burners or, more likely, to store precious liquids (oils, holy water, etc.). It is also possible that these objects belonged to the decoration of a larger and richer group, which would have been part of the treasure of a church.

Artistic and precious objects carved from crystal have a very long tradition that can be traced back to at least the Neolithic: a stone of light, with the light going through it but at the same time splitting it into seven colors, crystal (deriving from the ancient Greek κρυσταλλοσ, krýstallos, which means “ice”: this stone is an excellent thermal conductor that wealthy Romans used in the summer to cool their hands) thus symbolized the union of opposites between solid material and immaterial transparency. Certainly because of its pure appearance, this stone was thought to convey a very positive magic, curative and prophylactic value.

Among other pieces of rock crystal dated to the same period, used in Christian worship and representing architecture, one should mention the famous Grotto of the Virgin, which embellishes the Treasure of San Marco, in Venice.

SARCOPHAGUS WITH A MARINE THIASOS Roman, early 3rd century A.D. Marble Dim: 45 x 175 x 52.7 cm Complete sarcophagus, though composed of many reassembled fragments; partially chipped, broken and restored.

Quadrangular basin, decorated in relief on three sides, the main one being centered on the portrait of the deceased as a bust, placed in a shell surrounded by a perfectly symmetrical scene of a marine thiasos (from the ancient Greek Θιασοσ, a procession celebrating a deity, most often Dionysus accompanied by satyrs and maenads), in which the figures bathe in the sea, suggested here by the waves visible at the base of the image. The shell is supported by two marine centaurs, each holding an oar in the other hand. Each one carries on his croup a Nereid seated side-saddle; with one hand, the Nereids each delicately hold one end of the drapery fluttering lightly over their heads. The frieze is completed on either side by two other swimming Nereids, each clinging to the neck of an animal, a bull on the right and a deer (?) on the left: their drapery swells behind each of their backs like a ship’s sail. Under the belly of each Nereid plays an Eros riding a dolphin, while others of these mammals, in miniature, leap from the waves.

The marine centaurs each have an unkempt beard and hair; as an expression of their savagery, crab claws grow on their foreheads. The Nereids each have peaceful features and soft, wavy hair parted in the middle.

On the sides of the basin, two Erotes, made slightly more hastily, ride marine animals, guiding them by the bridle, a horse on one side and a griffin (?) on the other side.

The representation of a marine scene in a funerary context follows a specific concern: it evokes the last journey of the deceased, offering support on his or her way to the Island of the Blessed. To the ancients, the world was an island surrounded by water, the ocean that one had to cross to enter the realm of the dead.

At the center of the image, the deceased depicted in the shell, seen frontally, is a woman, probably still young, with regular, fine and well modeled features: her eyes with a determined gaze make her a matrona, in charge of the keys of the house and domestic staff. She is dressed in a tunic with disorderly folds on the neckline and in a stola (cloak) that swathes her shoulders. Her hair, parted in the middle, forms a triangle on her forehead and falls down both sides of her neck, hiding the ears. This type of enveloping, rigid hairstyle refers to that which Julia Domna (wife of Emperor Septimius Severus) made fashionable. Hence the dating suggested for this sarcophagus: the first quarter of the 3rd century A.D. (Julia Domna died in 217 A.D.).

This sarcophagus is a fine example of the series of numerous and well known basins decorated with a marine thiasos, in which the portrait of the deceased is placed at the center of the main image, framed by a large shell. Among the closest parallels, one should mention the sarcophagus Ma 396 from Rome (Borghese Collection), now in the Louvre, which represents an almost identical scene in the stylistic treatment of the figures and in the arrangement and attitude of the protagonists.

The production center of this series of sarcophagi was probably located in the Imperial capital city, Rome.

Art mésopotamien, vers 2700-2500 av. J.-C. (époque des Dynasties archaïques II) Gypse H : 82 cm Excepté la tête, actuellement perdue, et les épaules ébréchées, la statue est complète et en excellent état.

De taille bien plus importante que la moyenne et entièrement sculptée dans un seul bloc de gypse, la statue représente une figure masculine debout sur une épaisse base circulaire. Les bras sont pliés et remontés sur la poitrine, où les mains se joignent (contrairement à l’habitude la gauche, aux doigts raides et légèrement incisés, entoure la droite). Tout autour du cou, il reste un motif circulaire à peine en relief, présentant des petites perles (?) à l’arrière et des languettes à l’avant (?), dont il est difficile de préciser la nature : il s’agit probablement d’un collier plutôt que de la barbe et de la chevelure (les orants ont généralement le crâne rasé ou portent une barbe longue et épaisse et une chevelure en relief avec tresses). Les formes du torse sont un peu stylisées, avec les muscles de la poitrine indiqués par un léger modelage, les bras forment de longues tiges repliées à angle aigu, les épaules sont arrondies ; dans le dos, la colonne est indiquée par une légère gravure centrale tandis que de part et d’autre des marques inclinées indiquent les côtes. Les jambes, jusque sous les genoux, sont entièrement cachées par une longue jupe (le kaunakès, le vêtement sumérien «de cérémonie» par excellence) serrée à la taille par une ceinture ressemblant à un épais bourrelet : son extrémité ressort à l’arrière, du côté gauche, et forme une sorte de queue ornée de mèches incisées et ondulées. Dans la partie supérieure, la surface du kaunakès est entièrement lisse, tandis vers le fond elle présente des franges gravées aux pointes tournées vers le bas, comme des cônes renversés ; le bord inférieur est coupé droit. Sur l’épaule droite, une inscription probablement en cinq colonnes, aujourd’hui presque complètement effacée, indiquait vraisemblablement le nom et la fonction du dédiant.

L’équilibre et la stabilité de cette pièce sont assurés par le contrefort qui joint la partie inférieure à la base.

L’attitude générale de ce personnage correspond à celle des «orant(e)s» (Worshipper en anglais, Beter en allemand), qui sont un des types les plus anciens et les plus célèbres de toute la sculpture mésopotamienne. Beaucoup de temples mésopotamiens ont livré de nombreuses figurines d’hommes ou de femmes, que des fidèles ont fait exécuter et ont dédiées aux différentes divinités, comme témoignage de leur dévotion et pour s’assurer une présence constante près du dieu (douées de parole, ces figures peuvent adresser des prières à la divinité au nom de leur propriétaire). Ces statues étaient offertes par des personnages importants de la cour ou de l’administration, par des membres du personnel de culte, par des gens aisés (par exemple des marchands), voire par des membres des familles royales.

Dans ce schéma iconographique, largement répandu dans le monde mésopotamien du IIIe millénaire av. J.-C., la vision réaliste et naturelle du corps paraît secondaire : les statues se différencient toutes les unes des autres par les formes de leur visage, même s’il ne s’agit pas de portraits à proprement parler, puisque les traits restent généralement idéalisés et impersonnels. Stylistiquement et typologiquement la pièce en examen ressemble aux célèbres figures trouvées principalement dans le temple carré de Tell Asmar (ancienne Eshnunna), dans la vallée de la Diyala (un affluent du Tigre, non loin de l’actuelle Bagdad) qui sont caractérisées par des formes plutôt linéaires et stylisées.

Art proto-sumérien, époque de Jemdet-Nasr (fin du IVe – début du IIIe mill. av. J.-C.) Pierre rose L : 5.2 cm Statuette pratiquement intacte malgré une légère usure superficielle. Taillée dans un galet de forme semi-circulaire pourvu d’une protubérance marquant cou et tête. Trou pour la ficelle de suspension traversant verticalement le corps du lièvre, du dos jusqu’au milieu des pattes. Yeux probablement incrustés en pierres semi-précieuses, aujourd’hui perdues.

Animal sculpté en ronde-bosse aux contours un peu naïfs mais avec bon rendu des formes et des détails anatomiques (incisions pour les pattes et la tête, volumes bien arrondis pour les formes du corps et les cuisses). Museau pointu, oreilles plutôt grandes et en forme de feuille allongée et pattes postérieures musclées permettent d’identifier cette figurine comme un lièvre ou un lapin (dans l’Antiquité, même plus tard, à l’époque classique, on ne faisait guère de différance entre ces deux espèces). L’animal est représenté allongé sur le sol, avec les pattes pliées sous le corps et les oreilles ramenées vers l’arrière, dans une attitude de repos apparent : malgré cela, la puissance des pattes postérieures et leur position repliée mais prête à bondir traduisent l’attention constante que ces petits mammifères prêtent au milieu dans lequel ils vivent, comme si le sculpteur avait voulu souligner que la fuite est leur principal moyen de défense contre l’agression d’un prédateur.

La perforation indique que la pièce servait comme amulette : elle pouvait être portée suspendue à un collier ou être offerte comme ex-voto dans un sanctuaire.

Bovidés, caprinés et félins sont certainement les animaux les plus représentés par les artistes mésopotamiens tandis que les lièvres, bien que présents dès le Néolithique, sont des sujets plus rarement adoptés : parmi les premiers exemples il faut mentionner un récipient en pierre de Tell Buqras (VIIe-VIe mill. av. J.-C.) ainsi que le sceau de Tell Brak et la statuette de Genève, datés de la période de Jemdet-Nasr.

Lapins et lièvres représentaient une source non négligeable de nourriture et leurs os étaient utilisés pour la fabrication d’outils comme des aiguilles, des poinçons, etc. ; son éventuelle valeur symbolique nous est inconnue pour une époque aussi éloignée, mais on peut l’imaginer en relation avec ses extraordinaires capacités de reproduction ou avec son naturel craintif et discret.

Grâce à ses qualités artistiques remarquables, cette figurine peut être considérée comme un excellent exemple de la sculpture animalière proche-orientale de taille miniature, qui comprenait toute sorte d’espèces (ours, singes, vautours, grenouilles, hérissons, poissons, insectes, etc.) : son naturel et sa vivacité traduisent la proximité et la complicité que des habitants de l’ancienne Mésopotamie avaient avec le monde naturel qui les entourait et leur capacité d’en observer et d’en reproduire les détails.

Art égyptien, fin du Nouvel Empire (époque ramesside, XIIIe – XIIe s. av. J.-C.) Pierre calcaire jaune H : 21 cm Statuette dans un bon état mais partie inférieure des jambes perdue ; petites ébréchures sur le corps. Traces de pigment (ou fritte ?) bleu clair sur le sommet du crâne, entre les mèches de la perruque.

De taille plus grande que la moyenne pour une figurine de privé, cette pièce se distingue également par l’utilisation de la pierre plutôt que de la faïence ainsi que par ses qualités artistiques remarquables : proportions fines et allongées, corps bien modelé, finesse et richesse des incisions.

Selon une iconographie largement attestée, la figurine en examen est momiforme : elle est représentée debout, avec les jambes jointes et enveloppée dans un linceul. Ses mains, le seul détail du corps à ne pas être couvert par le tissu, se croisent devant la poitrine et sont équipées de plusieurs attributs : les outils nécessaires aux travaux agricoles (ici deux houes en forme de A, à la place du flabellum plus courant dans l’iconographie des ouchebtys), les sacs à semences (au nombre de deux et qu’il ne porte pas suspendus au dos) et un bâton. Sa tête est coiffée d’une longue perruque tripartite, aux mèches parfaitement indiquées par des lignes verticales. Le visage, au contour arrondi et aux traits sereins, présente un modelage très fin, la bouche charnue, à peine «souriante», le petit nez, les yeux maquillés et les amples sourcils : la barbe courte, presque un moignon, est une mode particulière et peu répandue (les exemplaires portant le même type de barbe datent généralement de la fin du Nouvel Empire, de la XIXe ou de la XXe dynastie : parmi les personnages dont les ouchebtys portent souvent ce type de barbe il faut mentionner le prince Khâemouaset, un des fils de Ramsès II).

La parure, très élaborée, se compose d’une paire de boucles d’oreilles circulaires (?), d’un grand collier à plusieurs rangées de perles et d’un pendentif en forme de cœur.

L’arrière de la statuette, tout en étant bien modelé, ne présente aucun détail anatomique ni d’inscriptions.

Une longue inscription occupant au moins sept colonnes précise le nom et la fonction du propriétaire de cette figurine et reprend un extrait du chapitre VI du Livre des Morts dans sa version longue : le personnage s’appelait Rementyou (un nom qui n’est pas attesté par d’autres sources égyptiennes) et était administrateur ou inspecteur.

Comme toujours le texte (qui est ici incomplet à cause de la cassure) présente quelques variantes intéressantes par rapport au Livre des Morts, parmi lesquelles il faut signaler : a) la grande importance attribuée au dieu Amon (par ailleurs inhabituelle dans le Livre des Morts) ; b) la présence, probablement par confusion, du signe de la voile (ligne 3-4, qui, indique «la brise» à la place du texte habituel «pour inonder les rives») et le signe de l’encensoir (ligne 4, faire des fumigations dont le sens est énigmatique). L’inscription peut donc se traduire ainsi : «Paroles dites pour le Ka de l’administrateur (inspecteur) Rementyou, justifié, reçois la vie de la part d’Amon, (toi qui es) sorti en présence d’Amon avec toute chose bonne, parfaite, pure, l’eau fraîche et le vin (lui) qui fait la brise pour lui (en ) paix, qui fait la fumigation vers sa narine (?), pour le Ka de l’Osiris de Rementyou. O Ouchebty, si je suis compté (pour la corvée) dans (…) tout ce que l’on fait dans la nécropole…»

Dès la fin du Nouvel Empire, l’iconographie et la fonction des ouchebtys semblent uniformisées : de substitut du défunt, ces figurines deviennent à cette époque ses serviteurs et sont ainsi tenues de s’activer pour exécuter les tâches de la vie quotidienne en sa faveur (dans les tombes les plus humbles les figurines funéraires sont simplement en terre cuite ou crue, recouverte d’un badigeon blanc).

Art égéen (Cyclades), Age du Bronze ancien II (milieu du IIIe mill. av. J.-C.) Marbre H : 41.8 cm Statuette en excellente condition, seule la pointe des pieds (certainement dirigés vers le bas) est cassée. Présence de traces d’abrasion laissées lors de la fabrication de la pièce (surtout dans la fissure séparant les jambes) et ombres à peine en relief indiquant des détails peints (partie gauche du visage, yeux).

Statuette extraordinaire à plus d’un titre : dimensions bien plus importantes que la moyenne, qualités artistiques, excellente conservation, restes de peinture la placent parmi les chefs-d’œuvre de la sculpture cycladique.

La statuette − seins en légère saillie et lignes du triangle pubien soulignent sa féminité − est représentée dans l’attitude habituelle des «idoles» cycladiques : elle est nue et debout (mais la position des pieds l’empêchait de se tenir droite toute seule), les jambes légèrement fléchies, les bras croisés sur le ventre ; la tête est inclinée vers l’arrière, le visage, où le seul détail indiqué plastiquement est le nez, a une forme ovale et régulière.

L’élégance et la souplesse de ses proportions sont en outre mises en valeur par de fines incisions linéaires ou par des volumes légèrement arrondis, qui expriment d’autres détails anatomiques : forme du visage, base du cou, colonne vertébrale, bas des fesses, genoux, doigts. La profonde fissure entre les jambes présente une ouverture mince et allongée entre les mollets.

Typologiquement il s’agit d’un très bel exemple de statuette canonique «aux bras croisés» (en anglais FAF, Folded Arm Figurines). Elle appartient à la variété dite de «Spédos», qui représente l’apothéose de la sculpture cycladique préhistorique, vers le milieu du IIIe millénaire av. J.-C. : P. Getz-Gentle la classe précisément dans la phase «Late Spedos» (vers 2500-2400 av. J.-C.) et en raison de ses dimensions, de ses contours et de son style, l’attribue au «Rodgers Sculptor» : de cette personnalité on connaît deux autres statuettes, dont l’une se trouve à Athènes au Musée d’art cycladique N.P. Goulandris et l’autre dans une collection américaine.

C’est surtout grâce à ces statuettes, de conception à la fois simple et attrayante, que l’art cycladique préhistorique est aujourd’hui si célèbre. Malgré leur beauté et leur pouvoir de séduction très fort pour le goût artistique moderne, les objets de cet artisanat gardent encore de nombreux secrets puisque leur(s) véritable(s) utilisation(s) demeure(nt) inconnue(s).

Tour à tour, on a voulu voir dans ces «idoles» − qui, lorsque le lieu de découverte est connu, proviennent presque uniquement de nécropoles − des concubines pour le mort, des pleureuses, des substituts de sacrifices humains, des nurses pour les défunts, des représentations d’ancêtres vénérés, des jouets à emmener dans l’au-delà, des figures permettant ou aidant le passage vers l’outre-tombe, etc. ; d’autres savants les mettent en relation avec la Grande Mère, une divinité de la procréation et de la fertilité, vénérée à partir du Néolithique au Proche-Orient, en Anatolie, et en Europe centrale.

Il est probable que derrière la remarquable unité stylistique, ces statuettes cachent différentes fonctions, qui sont aujourd’hui difficiles à saisir dans leurs détails. Selon P. Getz-Gentle, les récentes études sur leur polychromie permettent de leur attribuer un rôle plus actif qu’on ne le croyait : ces figures incarnaient probablement un être protecteur, certainement féminin et maternel (que P. Getz-Gentle compare à une sorte de saint patron), qui présidait aux phénomènes et aux événements naturels qui étaient le plus souvent inexplicables pour les Anciens : le cycle de la vie, les phénomènes astronomiques, le cycle saisonnier et la fertilité des terres, la mer, etc.

Art d’Asie occidentale, milieu du IIIe mill. av. J.-C. Cuivre arsénié (?)

H : 15.8 cm Objet complet, fondu en cuivre massif ; a probablement été fait en deux ou trois éléments assemblés (scène figurée, épingle, tête de serpent). Surface abondamment recouverte d’une épaisse patine verte, d’aspect granuleux au toucher.

Se compose : a) d’une longue tige cylindrique, soudée à angle droit au centre de l’applique dans sa partie postérieure et qui avait probablement une fonction utilitaire, pour fixer l’objet à son support d’origine ; b) l’applique elle-même est de forme triangulaire dans sa vue frontale et plate (seules les têtes des bœufs, partiellement creuses, ressortent en trois dimensions du fond de la scène) et présente une image complexe où deux bœufs à bosse (zébus), le cou dirigé vers le bas, sont debout sur un sol plat représenté par une simple ligne horizontale. Les deux bovidés sont dos à dos et supportent, assise sur leur croupe avec les fesses posées sur ses talons, une figure humaine : selon une iconographie répandue dans le monde proche-oriental contemporain, il est probable qu’il s’agisse d’un homme à la tête vue de profil, torse nu vu de face et habillé uniquement d’une jupe retenue à la taille par une ceinture. Il porte de longs cheveux et tient dans ses mains deux serpents au corps sinueux, qui se dressent verticalement et ouvrent leur gueule. Au-dessus de la tête de l’homme se trouve un objet énigmatique, de forme semi-circulaire : il pourrait s’agir soit d’une paire de cornes (ou d’un couvre-chef à cornes) soit du croissant de lune, symbole du dieu lunaire proche-oriental Sin. Dans les deux cas, la scène s’inscrirait donc dans le domaine religieux. Un troisième serpent ressort horizontalement de l’applique entre les deux bovidés. A l’arrière l’objet est plat. Les espaces entre les différents acteurs de la scène sont en partie ajourés et présentent quelques chutes de métal coupés de façon un peu hâtive le long des bords.

L’usure superficielle empêche d’apprécier les détails incisés ou modelés qui enrichissaient les figures, mais il est évident que le style de la composition s’apparente à celui que l’on appelle «style interculturel», que les récentes découvertes archéologiques de la région du Kerman (Iran central) ont largement enrichi, voire remis en question. Dans l’iconographie de ce style, le personnage comme celui de cette applique apparaît à plusieurs reprises, surtout sur les vases en chlorite (vase cylindrique du British Museum, vases tronconiques du Louvre et d’une collection japonaise par exemple), mais également dans la petite sculpture (statuette en bronze du Louvre) : l’homme, qui est probablement un être mythologique sans qu’on ne puisse préciser sa nature exacte (dieu, «héros», etc.), serait une sorte de maître des animaux dominant aussi bien les espèces domestiquées, représentées par les bœufs (dont l’importance économique est fondamentale dans le cadre des cultures du Proche-Orient ancien), que les bêtes sauvages que reproduisent les serpents.

Malgré la présence de la tige médiane, la massivité structurelle, l’impression de force qu’elle dégage et le fait que la scène soit disposée perpendiculairement par rapport à la tige ne permettent pas de rapprocher cette pièce des «épingles» en cuivre de l’âge du Bronze, dont quelques exemples atteignent des dimensions considérables (cf. épingle du Louvre avec scène figurée). Pour la pièce en examen, qui ne semble pas posséder de véritable parallèles, il est plus raisonnable d’imaginer une utilisation comme élément décoratif – offert peut-être comme ex-voto dans un sanctuaire – à placer sur un support important comme une grosse menuiserie, une porte, une paroi ou plus génériquement une partie d’une architecture dont le type reste à déterminer.

Art de Grèce orientale (Lydie ?), env. deuxième-troisième quart du Ve s. av. J.-C. (460-430 av. J.-C.) Marbre H : env. 130 cm Bon état général. Statue acéphale, pieds, mains et avant-bras gauche perdus ; quelques ébréchures. Très beau marbre blanc avec veinures grises et patine gris-beige uniforme.

Statue de femme debout, grandeur nature, vue frontalement (le dos est bien achevé mais avec détails uniquement superficiels, sans les volumes de la partie antérieure). Le poids du corps est soutenu par la jambe gauche, la droite étant à peine pliée : cela provoque un léger déhanchement visible surtout à l’arrière. Le bras gauche était plié et dirigé vers le spectateur, le droit plié et soulevé : aucune trace d’éventuels attributs n’est conservée.

La femme porte : a) un long chiton en lin finement plissé sur le décolleté, l’épaule droite et les chevilles ; b) un épais manteau en laine (himation) qui enveloppe tout le corps en passant sous l’aisselle droite et en couvrant l’épaule opposée ; passant au-dessous du bras gauche, le bord du tissu descend verticalement, plat et large, et se termine par des plis sinueux.

Malgré le décalage chronologique, cette manière de porter rappelle encore la mode de l’époque, les koraï archaïques (statues de jeunes femmes) habillées à la mode ionienne ; c) un voile fin qui couvrait la tête, dont on voit les plis et les bords sur les épaules et derrière le cou. De la chevelure il ne reste que deux tresses finement torsadées et descendant sur la poitrine.

Le niveau artistique du travail est très bon : il est caractérisé par des proportions correctes, par la position bien rendue et, du point de vue stylistique, par une recherche riche et précise de la disposition des plis. Vue de profil, la statue manque de profondeur, malgré le mouvement du bras et la jambe légèrement soulevée, un peu comme si le sculpteur avait voulu souligner l’importance de la vue frontale dans la structure de l’œuvre.

Sur le décolleté et sur l’épaule droite le jeu des plis est riche et varié, son faible relief rend la finesse et la transparence du lin. En revanche l’épaisseur de la laine de l’himation est traduite par les courbes profondes qui traversent en diagonale le corps de la femme et qui forment des courbes régulières sous le bras droit.

Stylistiquement il s’agit d’une statue proche du groupe d’œuvres appelées parfois «cyclado-ioniques», dans lesquelles on reconnaît de fortes influences gréco-orientales et qui comprend surtout des reliefs et des stèles funéraires provenant de Thessalie, de Béotie et du monde ionien, jusqu’en Lydie : avec quelques stèles thessaliennes du Musée National d’Athènes et chronologiquement proches, parmi ses meilleurs parallèles il faut mentionner en premier lieu une stèle conservée à Izmir provenant de Sardes (la capitale de l’ancienne Lydie) datée du milieu du Ve siècle av. J.-C.. Elle reproduit l’image d’une orante (geste de la main droite) plus que d’une prêtresse dans une attitude similaire à celle de la statue en examen, qui porte le même type de vêtements.

Art chrétien, env. VIe s. apr. J.-C. Marbre H : 88 cm - L : 146 cm Plaque en marbre blanc et fin, complète mais reconstituée (dix fragments) ; conserve, par endroits, des morceaux d’étoffe rouge. Surface finement travaillée, jouant sur les différences de niveau et le rythme des parties sculptées et des grandes surfaces lisses. Bords d’une épaisseur de 5.3 centimètres, griffés en zigzags serrés pour augmenter l’adhérence du mortier.

La surface est orné en très bas relief sur les deux côtés : la face A montre deux croix pattées montées sur des globes de part et d’autre d’une croix pattée inscrite dans un hexagone. Le tout est encadré par une double moulure. La face B est ornée d’une grande croix pattée inscrite dans un cercle encadré.

La plaque faisait partie d’une barrière basse formée de plaque de pierre et de pilastres. La plaque était maintenue entre deux pilastres rainurés et s’insérait dans une base rainurée. Un lourd parapet de pierre rainuré terminait la barrière tout un ajoutant un poids pour renforcer la stabilité de l’ensemble.

Le chancel (ou cancel ; cancelli,-orum en latin) désigne des barrières en bois, en métal ou en pierre ajourée ou formées de grandes plaques. Les Romains les plaçaient dans différents monuments publics ou privés afin de rythmer et d’organiser l’espace.

Le chancel est un élément architectural des premières basiliques civiles impériales du IVe siècle. Il sert à délimiter un espace réservé aux magistrats (juges, orateurs…). Ce moyen pragmatique de valorisation et de protection de la magistrature dans un bâtiment public où se manifestait le pouvoir était aussi un moyen d’exprimer la hiérarchisation du peuple, des magistrats et des soldats, comme l’attestent les différentes barrières − sans doute en métal − qui partagent la foule devant l’empereur Théodose Ier lors de son apparition dans la loge officielle de l’hippodrome (reliefs de la base de l’obélisque de Théodose Ier (347-395) dressé sur l’hippodrome de Constantinople).

Suite à l’Edit de Milan de Constantin et de Licinius (313) qui autorise le libre exercice de sa religion dans l’Empire romain, l’empereur Constantin, converti au christianisme, lance la construction de plusieurs grandes basiliques dédiées au culte chrétien à Rome (Saint-Jean-de-Latran, Sainte-Marie-Majeure, basilique Saint-Pierre), à Constantinople (basilique SainteSophie dédiée au Christ Sagesse de Dieu) et en Terre Sainte (le Saint-Sépulcre, la basilique de la Nativité). Des mausolées sont aussi construits, sur des plans centrés à Rome sur les anciennes catacombes (Sainte-Agnès hors les murs, Saint-Sébastien hors les murs), ou pour les tombeaux impériaux de Constance et d’Hélène. Bien qu’aucun de ces bâtiments chrétiens n’aient été conservés dans son état originel, ils comprenaient initialement un espace délimité par une barrière (chancel) dans leurs plans. Cet espace était dès lors réservé aux exécutants du culte et protégeait l’accès à l’autel du sacrifice.

Ces barrières s’adaptaient naturellement à la fonction et au plan général de l’église (chœur surélevé, double circulation du cœur, martyrium, espace s’avançant dans la nef). Il se retrouve dans les églises du IVe et du VIe siècle en dehors des grands centres de pouvoir. Les fouilles de la cathédrale nord de Saint-Pierre à Genève (IVe siècle) ont ainsi révélé la présence d’un chancel disposé en avant de l’abside.

Dans les églises orientales le chancel évolue vers une élévation en colonnade qui s’ajoute à la simple barrière basse créant un templon (comme par exemple dans l’église Saint-Jean-d’Ephèse). Par la suite le chœur est totalement séparé par un mur d’icônes appelé iconostase. En Occident, le chancel se transforme parfois en jubé dans les églises médiévales.

Aujourd’hui il est encore possible de voir des exemples de barrière paléochrétienne ou datant de l’époque justinienne : un mausolée des catacombes de la Via Latina à Rome (époque paléochrétienne, probablement avant l’Edit de Milan), dans l’église Sainte-Sabine de Rome (Ve siècle, mais reconstituée), dans la basilique San Clemente al Laterano à Rome (XIIe siècle : les plaques du chancel sont celles de la première basilique du VIe siècle) mais aussi à Sainte-Sophie au niveau de la première galerie (VIe siècle, loge de l’impératrice), etc.

Le Haut Moyen Age et l’époque romane poursuivent la tradition de la barrière de plaque de marbre en faisant évoluer les motifs avec le style de l’époque (Duomo de San Ciriaco à Ancone, XIIe siècle). La basilique de Saint-Marc à Venise, tournée vers Byzance qu’elle admire et repousse à la fois, reproduit au XIe siècle les motifs des plaques de marbre du VIe siècle qui se trouvaient dans la basilique constantinienne des Saints-Apôtres à Constantinople.

De nombreuses plaques de marbre provenant de balustrade ou d’ancienne barrière de cœur ont été conservées, datant pour la plupart du XIe-XIIe siècle. L’exemplaire présenté ici s’inscrit quant à lui dans la production byzantine du VIe siècle dont les plaques des basiliques San Clemente al Laterano à Rome et de Saint-Marc à Venise donnent un bon écho.

Art égyptien, fin du VIe - Ve s. av. J.-C. (XXVIe - XXVIIe dynastie, fin de l’époque saïte – époque perse) Grauwacke H : 18.4 cm Torse et tête taillés dans un bloc de grauwacke de couleur gris-vert. Bras et jambes perdues, nez ébréché. Monté sur une base moderne en bois, portant une étiquette « Inagaki », un socleur japonais qui travaillait à Paris entre les deux guerres.

L’image reproduisait une figure masculine d’aspect apparemment jeune, au torse musclé et finement modelé, qui se tenait probablement debout. A l’arrière un large pilier qui servait à renforcer l’équilibre de la statuette conserve une inscription, sur deux colonnes, encore parfaitement déchiffrable dans sa partie supérieure mais qui ne nous livre plus le nom du personnage en question. La traduction en est la suivante : «Le compagnon, l’administrateur du palais, le responsable du secret de (…) l’intendant de la Oaubet, intendant (…)» (le terme Oaubet, qui signifie «la salle pure», indique à la fois un atelier sacré, le lieu d’embaumement et le sanctuaire du secret d’Osiris).

La partie postérieure de la perruque porte un graffiti moderne reproduisant trois lettres en alphabet latin, qui se lisent «POE» mais dont le sens reste énigmatique : il a peut-être été incisé par un voyageur inconnu du XIXe siècle, qui aurait pu voir la pièce en Egypte, peut-être sur un kôm du delta du Nil. La tête est couverte par une épaisse perruque longue, unie et non tripartite, au contour arrondi sur les épaules et dans le dos, selon un type rare mais déjà attesté déjà à la XVIIIe dynastie. Le modelage du visage, de grande qualité artistique, est rendu par des volumes finement arrondis : les yeux sont grands et en forme d’amande, les sourcils en léger relief, les lèvres pulpeuses, le nez large, les oreilles bien dégagées. L’expression, aux traits idéalisés, est sereine et calme.

Suspendu à un collier, l’homme porte un pectoral gravé, de forme carrée et représentant une petite scène : à droite une figure divine, Neith (déesse qui incarne le milieu liquide d’où toute forme de vie est issue, reconnaissable grâce à la couronne rouge), est assise sur son trône. Devant elle, un roi debout et coiffé de la couronne bleue (qui est le casque de combat du pharaon), lui présente une coupelle contenant une figure assise caractérisée par la plume sur la tête : l’image reproduit le moment central du rituel journalier avec l’offrande de Maât (déesse de la justice et de l’équilibre cosmique), qui résume toutes les offrandes particulières. Il est possible que la scène ait aussi une valeur historique, en plus de sa signification religieuse : en effet, Neith, déesse de Saïs, la capitale de la XXVIe dynastie, est une figure belliqueuse, qui sera aussi assimilée à Athéna : cela justifie le port de la couronne bleue (particulièrement prisée par les rois de cette dynastie) de la part du souverain. Ces considérations permettent de confirmer la datation de cette œuvre vers le milieu du Ier millénaire av. J.-C. : il s’agit soit d’un témoignage direct de la fin de l’époque saïte, soit d’une œuvre «nostalgique» un peu plus tardive, qui rappelle une époque reconnue pour son indépendance.

Art romain, Ier s. av. J.-C. Marbre H : 25.5 cm Tête dans un bon état général et visage bien conservé. Partie postérieure du crâne partiellement perdue et nez cassé, usures sur la tempe et la joue gauche.

Tête grandeur nature d’un portrait représentant un homme âgé au visage marqué par les rides et les lourds plis de la peau : comme pour de nombreux portraits de l’époque républicaine le réalisme très poussé est son trait stylistique le plus remarquable. Elle appartenait à une statue ou à un buste honorifique ou funéraire d’un personnage certainement en vue (probablement un patricien dont l’identité est actuellement inconnue) ayant vécu environ à la même époque que Jules César. Œuvre de qualité artistique remarquable, cette tête présente une structure claire (la forme du crâne est bien présente avec des pommettes saillantes, la mâchoire forte et les arcades sourcilières bien sculptées) avec un visage large et arrondi.

Les traits du visage fortement marqués par les rides du front et dans la région du nez, les joues un peu creuses et la peau un peu molle, le menton proéminent et fort n’indiquent pas seulement l’âge de l’homme mais traduisent également son caractère et son aptitude à diriger son entourage comme un personnage de haut rang de la société et/ou comme un pater familias latin. Ses yeux légèrement asymétriques, au regard sévère et perçant, confirment cette impression. La chevelure courte couvre la tête comme une calotte détaillée en une multitude de petites mèches ondulées et disposées irrégulièrement sur toute la surface.

Vers la fin de l’époque républicaine la tradition du portrait (imago en latin) est solidement établie dans l’art romain, aussi bien grâce à l’apport des artistes grecs hellénistiques qu’à la coutume italique de vénérer les masques ou les bustes des aïeux. Les têtes comme celle-ci, que la critique moderne appelle «républicaines», sont caractérisées par un vérisme très marqué, qui se traduit par le choix du sujet (le plus souvent l’homme représenté est un homme âgé plutôt qu’un homme d’âge adulte) et par des visages aux traits personnels fortement accentués, parfois caricaturaux (ossature proéminente des arcades sourcilières, joues creuses, plis de la peau, rides). Ces moyens permettent aux sculpteurs d’exprimer visuellement quelques-uns des idéaux de la société contemporaine tels que la sagesse, l’expérience, le respect des lois, etc.

Dans la Rome républicaine, une série de normes législatives très précises (ius honorum et imaginum) réglait le droit d’exposer les portraits privés en public : ces œuvres revêtaient une fonction honorifique ou funéraire.

Les images de personnalités connues étaient exposées dans les lieux fréquentés, en particulier sur le forum ou dans les sanctuaires, dans but de propagande politique ou pour promouvoir l’image de la famille (gens) à laquelle appartenait la personne représentée. La coutume de montrer les portraits ou les statues iconiques individuels était répandue aussi dans la sphère privée, puisque les maisonnées patriciennes possédaient généralement leur galerie des ancêtres : ces images étaient un élément très important de la transmission des vertus de la gens d’une génération à l’autre en jouant un rôle fondamental lors des cérémonies funéraires.

Art grec classique (Attique), milieu du Ve s. av. J.-C. Céramique H : 37.1 cm Vase entier mais recollé avec petits rebouchages ; peinture en bon état. Décoré selon la technique de la figure rouge.

Récipient de grande taille avec corps en forme de cœur, col bas et droit, lèvre plate et large, pied moulé à deux niveaux.

Anses cylindriques et verticales dont la forme donne le nom à ce type de cratère.

Lèvre décorée d’un motif végétal stylisé (lotus avec tiges), ravissantes palmettes dessinées entre des volutes sur la plaquette située au-dessus des anses. Les deux scènes peintes dans les métopes, que délimite un bord réservé, orné de rangées de points ou de languettes, dépeignent des activités de la vie quotidienne. La scène principale représente trois personnages : a) un jeune homme au centre, nu mais portant les attributs du voyageur que sont le pétase (chapeau à large bord) et la chlamyde (manteau agrafé devant le cou ou sur l’épaule). Vu de face, il se trouve devant son cheval, qui semble se déplacer lentement vers la droite : l’attitude du jeune homme, avec déhanchement et bras droit plié et soulevé pour s’appuyer aux lances, n’est pas sans rappeler les grandes statues de héros ou d’athlètes du début de l’époque classique ; b) à gauche, apparemment derrière le cheval, se trouve un homme adulte portant une barbe drue, habillé d’un grand manteau, qui fait un geste de la main droite vers le jeune ; c) la scène est close par la figure d’un vieillard, caractérisé par la barbe et les cheveux blancs, enveloppé dans un himation (manteau) et tenant un bâton dans sa main droite soulevée.

Par analogie avec les images de départ des guerriers, cette scène représente probablement le départ pour une campagne militaire d’un jeune cavalier, qui prend congé de sa famille, représentée par les générations du père et du grand-père (la figure féminine tenant la coupe à libation est ici absente). Moins fréquentes que les départs des hoplites (fantassins de l’armée grecque) et parfois difficiles à distinguer des scènes de dokimasie (inspection des cavaliers et des chevaux dont parle Aristote), les images de congé des cavaliers sont néanmoins bien attestées sur la céramique attique contemporaine, surtout sur l’extérieur des coupes.

Dans la métope de la face secondaire, peinte de façon plus hâtive, trois personnages sont en train de converser paisiblement : deux jeunes hommes tenant un bâton sont tournés vers le centre en direction d’une jeune femme (reconnaissable à sa coiffure) et paraissent discuter paisiblement avec elle. Bien que rien ne l’indique de façon manifeste, il est possible que la scène ait un caractère érotique.

Malgré le style et le sujet un peu stéréotypés et hâtifs de la face B, la qualité artistique de ce cratère est d’un bon niveau : la forme est bien proportionnée et tournée, la scène principale est bien équilibrée, riche en détails peints qui enrichissent les tissus (jeu des plis) et l’anatomie des personnages et du cheval.

Le vase n’a pas encore été attribué à une personnalité précise, mais il est certainement l’œuvre d’un peintre classique ayant travaillé à Athènes vers le milieu du Ve siècle av. J.-C., pratiquement à la même époque de l’érection du Parthénon. Son style s’approche de celui des peintres du groupe de Boreas-Florence, auquel cette personnalité appartenait : reconnus par J.D. Beazley, ces artistes étaient spécialisés dans la production et la décoration de cratères et grands vases comme celui en examen.

Le cratère, un des récipients les plus importants et caractéristiques de la céramique attique du Ve siècle av. J.-C., était l’élément central de l’espace dédié au banquet grec. Il contenait le vin, coupé avec de l’eau en proportions variables, que les convives consommaient pendant le symposion. Le mélange était ensuite transvasé à l’aide d’une louche dans des cruches (oenochoés) ou directement dans des coupes, et servi aux participants.

Art égyptien, Ancien Empire (Ve – VIe dynastie, env. 2500-2200 av. J.-C.) Pierre calcaire peinte Dim : 84 x 48 x 21 cm Stèle taillée dans un bloc rectangulaire, avec niche profondément creusée et trois figures sculptées en relief. Arrière et côtés du bloc dégrossis ; traces des outils de travail du sculpteur amplement visibles. Polychromie très riche (figures, vêtements, architecture) dans un état de conservation remarquable ; les couleurs utilisées sont gris-noir, noir, ocre, brunrouge, blanc.

Scène encadrée par une architecture composée de deux colonnes minces et longues se terminant en forme d’ogive et soutenant élément horizontal et un «toit» très bas ; pigment ocre avec traits rouges pour le toit et rouge et blanc avec traits noirs pour les colonnes.

Du fond de la stèle, peint en gris-noir, ressortent trois personnages debout, dans une attitude strictement frontale.

Comme souvent dans les sculptures égyptiennes de cette époque les formes et les proportions sont un peu naïves, mais l’anatomie et les vêtements sont richement détaillés par la polychromie très vivante et par les nombreux détails sculptés : a) à gauche l’homme présente une carrure puissante (pectoraux et muscles des bras développés et bien modelés) et des jambes fortes, avec la rotule et les tibias en relief. Ses bras descendent le long du corps, dans ses mains serrées en poings il tient un objet circulaire énigmatique (en tissu ?). Il est coiffé d’une perruque évasée avec une raie médiane entièrement peinte en noir. Il porte un pagne non amidonnée retenu par une ceinture et une peau de léopard (allusion à une possible fonction religieuse de ce personnage ?) nouée sur son épaule gauche et couvrant une partie du torse et du pagne (taches du pelage, queue et une tête de félin sont peintes sur la couleur jaune-ocre du fond). La parure est composée d’un large collier et d’une paire de grands bracelets. La peau tannée de l’homme est rendue par la peinture brun-rouge ; b) près de sa jambe droite se tient un garçon entièrement nu, aux cheveux noirs et à la peau tannée : de sa main gauche levée il touche la jambe de son père ; c) à droite le tableau est complété par la mère qui se différencie d’abord par la coloration plus claire de sa peau. Ses proportions sont très féminines, avec une silhouette mince et sinueuse soulignée par la tunique moulante et le sein bien arrondi. D’un geste plein de charme, elle passe son bras droit derrière le dos de son mari et le retient avec sa main qui apparaît sur l’épaule droite de l’homme. Son vêtement, sans manches et qui semble remonter jusqu’au cou, est orné d’un riche damier régulier (peint en rouge, noir et blanc), de cercles concentriques sur le sein et de raies horizontales polychromes sur les épaulettes. Elle porte le même type de perruque courte que son époux ; sa parure comprend un haut bracelet au poignet gauche et une paire de gros bracelets aux chevilles.

Le nom des personnages et leurs fonctions sont connu : selon la norme de cette période, les inscriptions sont brèves (nom et fonction des personnages) et se développent au-dessus des statues (ici pour le nom de l’homme et de la femme) ou se trouvent sur le socle à ses pieds (enfant). La femme de cette stèle s’appelle Nebudouyat et était intendante des travailleurs de la cour (Mitret Nebudouyat) : par sa fonction elle était donc probablement proche de la cour royale. Son mari, dont l’inscription est plus énigmatique, s’appelle Nyankhhenu et était intendant des récitations (?) ; sous l’enfant on lit «le scribe Henu».

Souvent très vivantes comme ici, les images de privés de l’Ancien Empire n’étaient pas exposées aux regards des vivants, mais conçues pour la sépulture et placées dans une chapelle de culte, à laquelle seuls les prêtres avaient accès lors de cérémonies funéraires. Il ne s’agissait pas de portraits personnels au sens strict du terme mais de figures aux formes idéalisées et respectant des canons précis : malgré cela, elles se différencient toutes les unes des autres, en traduisant ainsi le désir des anciens Egyptiens de garder leur individualité et leur personnalité même après la mort, dans l’au-delà.

Art romain, fin du Ier s. apr. J.-C. Marbre H : 31 cm Buste complet et en excellent état ; actuellement monté sur un piédouche ancien (probablement du XVIIIe siècle). Oreilles et nez de l’enfant à peine ébréchés, tête de l’aigle perdue. Surface parfaitement conservée et polie. Œuvre d’une grande finesse artistique, rendant l’effigie particulièrement attachante.

Buste d’enfant grandeur nature, qui semble avoir environ quatre ans. Le sculpteur a parfaitement rendu son jeune âge par plusieurs éléments : le front bombé, le nez court et écrasé, les yeux un peu enfoncés, les lèvres charnues, les joues pleines, le menton étroit et arrondi, le cou plissé. S’y ajoute la coiffure, qui recouvre le crâne comme une calotte mince et légère mais un peu désordonnée. Les mèches sont arrondies et ondulées sur l’avant de la tête, mais bouclées sur la nuque, où elles sont disposées en étoile à partir de l’occiput.

L’enfant a une expression rêveuse, voire mélancolique, accentuée par la position de la tête, légèrement inclinée et tournée vers sa gauche avec le regard dirigé vers le bas : dans un si jeune enfant, cette attitude fait probablement allusion à sa mort prématurée et à la dureté de son destin.

On remarque à la base du buste la représentation d’un aigle en miniature. L’oiseau, aux ailes déployées, prend son envol pour emporter le garçon dans le ciel : le symbole est clair, le jeune défunt se trouve promis à l’apothéose, l’admission parmi les dieux. Le plumage de l’aigle est indiqué de façon légère, presque impressionniste, qui contraste avec la précision et le réalisme de l’effigie de l’enfant : on ne peut exclure que ce détail ait été retravaillé en un deuxième temps (peut-être qu’à l’origine une feuille d’acanthe se trouvait à la place du rapace : le portrait serait donc devenu funéraire seulement à cause de la mort et de la divinisation du garçon).

Le style permet de dater cette pièce des dernières décennies du Ier s. apr. J.-C., pendant l’époque des Flaviens : la remarquable qualité de l’œuvre et la présence de l’aigle indiquent que le personnage était de rang très élevé, probablement impérial : on pense donc reconnaître un enfant de Domitien (Titus, frère de Domitien, n’avait pas d’héritiers). Le sculpteur du buste laisse entendre que son jeune modèle se présente en qualité de prince héritier de par la nature de son vêtement, non pas un manteau quelconque mais le pallium militaire, que l’enfant porte agrafé sur son épaule gauche. L’iconographie de l’apothéose possède un célèbre précédent dans l’art de l’époque flavienne avec la montée aux cieux de Titus sculptée en relief sous l’arche principale de son arc de triomphe qui se trouve sur le forum.

Du point de vue historique la problématique concernant le(s) enfant(s) de Domitien est compliquée et peut-être sans solution définitive : selon Suétone (Vie de Domitien, III, 1), son épouse Domitia Longina, fille de Corbulon (un général de l’armée sous Néron), lui a donné un fils en 73 apr. J.-C. Cet enfant, dont le nom reste inconnu (Vespasien selon certains, Titus Flavius Caesar selon d’autres), serait décédé en bas-âge avant ou juste après l’avènement de son père (Domitien accède au pouvoir en 81 apr. J.-C., suite au décès de Titus) comme le montrent quelques émissions monétaires faisant allusion à sa divinisation et montrant dans un cas un jeune enfant sur un globe, les bras tendus vers le ciel et entouré de sept étoiles et dans l’autre un garçon debout devant sa mère assise.

Selon les interprétations de la critique moderne, la naissance de deux autres enfants, l’un probablement une fille en 82 apr. J.-C. et l’autre (un garçon ?) en 90, est possible mais on manque d’éléments concrets pour le prouver et cela reste donc largement hypothétique : l’effigie en question représente selon toute vraisemblance le seul héritier vraiment sûr de Domitien, celui qui a été divinisé et qui apparaît aussi sur les monnaies impériales de l’empereur et de son épouse.

Une tête d’un garçon du même âge, conservée à la Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek de Copenhague, a également été attribuée à ce jeune personnage : il n’est pourtant pas certains qu’il s’agisse d’un portrait individuel puisque ses traits sont fortement idéalisés, surtout dans la région des yeux.

Art mésopotamien, VIIIe – VIIe s. av. J.-C. Verre opaque bleu clair H : 10.7 cm Récipient complet, seule la lèvre est en grande partie perdue ; surface en bon état, encore brillante mais couleur originale partiellement altérée, devenue blanc-gris. Quatre épaisses bandes verticales superficielles, disposées en croix sur le corps, laissent supposer l’existence de lanières (en métal ou plus probablement en cuir) permettant de suspendre l’amphorisque à une ficelle.

Exemplaire en verre opaque ne présentant aucune décoration, moulé sur un noyau d’argile. Le corps est en forme d’ogive avec fond arrondi, épaule mince et presque plate, col bas et cylindrique, pourvu d’une petite lèvre. Anses verticales, formant une petite boucle, fabriquées à partir de deux simples rubans de verre repliés (en anglais duck head handles) et appliqués à la hauteur de l’épaule.

La technique des vases modelés sur noyau d’argile était déjà connue en Mésopotamie et en Egypte au début du IIe millénaire avant notre ère. La forme générale du récipient était obtenue en modelant d’abord de l’argile grossièrement épurée (le noyau) : fixé à une canne, ce noyau était plongé dans le verre en fusion, tandis que la mise en forme était ensuite assurée par le roulement et/ou l’étirement de la masse sur une planche ; la malléabilité du verre est maintenue grâce à un réchauffement constant de la masse. Le motif à festons colorés (jaunes ou blancs sur fond foncé) est la décoration caractéristique de ces récipients : elle était obtenue en incorporant à la surface des fils de verre, qui peuvent être étirés à l’aide d’une pointe pour créer le dessin en zigzags ou en plumes. Le noyau en argile est éliminé mécaniquement après le refroidissement du vase.

L’aspect opaque du verre est provoqué par l’adjonction, au mélange vitrifiable, d’éléments chimiques qui causent la séparation des cristaux transparents lors du refroidissement du verre.

Cet amphorisque, que les traces de lanières rendent probablement unique, appartient à une classe peu nombreuse de vases en verre, produits probablement en Mésopotamie entre la fin du VIIIe et le VIe siècle av. J.-C., dont des exemplaires proviennent de sites se trouvant aussi bien en Assyrie qu’en Babylonie. Les deux formes les plus répandues sont l’alabastre et l’amphorisque, qui se différencient uniquement par le profil du fond (arrondi mais plus pointu pour l’amphorisque).

La forme correspond au type 8,d du classement proposé par D. Barag, qui dériverait des alabastres égyptiens en albâtre.

Les Anciens avaient certainement remarqué que le verre est une matière chimiquement neutre, ce qui le rend particulièrement apte à la conservation des denrées alimentaires mais surtout des produits cosmétiques et pharmaceutiques : les petits récipients comme celui-ci, que l’on pouvait facilement fermer avec un couvercle en liège, en cire ou en tissu, servait à stocker de petites quantités de parfums ou huiles précieux.

Selon un avis répandu, cette série de vases produits au Proche-Orient serait à l’origine des célèbres petits récipients «à festons» apparus dans le monde méditerranéen à partir du VIIe siècle av. Art protosumérien, époque de Gemdet-Nasr (fin du IVe − début du IIIe mill. av. J.-C.) Pierre calcaire, nacre, calcaire rose H : 24.6 cm - D : max. 19.5 cm Vase complet et en excellente condition malgré quelques ébréchures. Incrustations en nacre et calcaire rose. Abondants restes de bitume dans les interstices séparant les incrustations.

Gobelets sans anses, taillée dans un seul bloc de pierre, à paroi épaisse ; contour remarquablement régulier et symétrique.

Corps tronconique, à paroi linéaire et lèvre supérieure arrondie ; pied bas et évasé avec petit bord plat, à l’intérieur creux.

Le bec verseur triangulaire, communiquant avec l’intérieur par un gros trou circulaire, indique que le récipient était probablement destiné à contenir et à verser des denrées liquides.

Après un premier dégrossissement, le récipient a probablement été achevé sur une tournette et frotté au sable ou à l’émeri. L’intérieur a été évidé à l’aide d’un foret en bois avec la pointe en silex ou en obsidienne, selon une technique connue surtout grâce à des représentations égyptiennes.

Décoration entièrement constituée de motifs géométriques incrustés : triangles, losanges, barrettes et carreaux, disposés en frises horizontales et verticales, qui divisent le champ en quatre métopes, au centre desquelles se trouve une rosette circulaire à huit pétales roses et blancs. La disposition des différents motifs est régulière et parfaitement structurée, tous les éléments sont répétés plusieurs fois selon un ordre bien précis ; chaque élément de la décoration est fixé avec du bitume dans un lit en relief dans le creux, soigneusement sculpté sur la surface de la pierre.

Les artisans protosumériens et sumériens étaient passés maîtres de la technique de l’incrustation, qu’ils ont appliquée à différentes sortes d’objets et de matériaux (pierre, bois, os, métal, etc.) : ce récipient est un excellent exemple de ce procédé. Les motifs reproduits ici font partie du répertoire linéaire et abstrait de ce genre de décoration (d’autres objets sont décorés de complexes scènes figurées). Le motif de la rosette est fréquent et attesté sur d’autres vases en pierre ainsi que dans l’architecture (cônes en argile utilisés pour la décoration des parois des édifices) ou dans la menuiserie (tables de jeu), etc.

Cette forme – qui, en raison du goulot et du contour angulaire, apparaît plutôt isolée dans le répertoire des formes proche-orientales − rappelle aussi bien les célèbres cruches avec long bec présentes sur de nombreux sites proche-orientaux et fréquemment représentées dans l’iconographie (scènes cultuelles avec offrandes de produits liquides), que les gobelets à corps tronconiques de taille et proportions variables, pourvus d’un pied triangulaire creux, dont l’utilisation dans un cadre religieux est également attestée par l’iconographie.

Comme le suggère la comparaison avec la statuette protoélamite en argent reproduisant un être mi-taureau mi-homme agenouillé (New York, Metr. Mus.) en train d’offrir un gobelet à bec comparable à celui en examen (mais sans pied), de tels récipients étaient des objets de luxe qui appartenaient soit à des haut dignitaires soit au trésor d’un sanctuaire : on peut imaginer qu’ils servaient comme présents d’échange lors de visites officielles, ou, dans un cadre religieux, pour faire des libations à la divinité en lui offrant de l’eau, du vin ou de l’huile.

Parmi les meilleurs parallèles de cette pièce, il faut mentionner les grands récipients en stéatite (cruche à bec tubulaire pour des libations, coupes tronconiques) ornés avec les mêmes motifs géométriques incrustés et trouvés lors des fouilles de l’ancienne ville d’Uruk, dans le sud de la Mésopotamie.

Art grec, fin du Ve – début du IVe s. av. J.-C. Bronze H : 32.4 cm Vase complet, très bien conservé ; petits rebouchages et quelques restaurations sur le corps. Surface en excellent état, recouverte d’une belle patine vert-brun.

Fabriqué en plusieurs éléments : corps, col et bord martelés dans une seule feuille de bronze, anses et base fondues séparément en bronze massif et soudées au corps.

Grand récipient techniquement et artistiquement d’une qualité remarquable : forme allongée et élégante avec profil sinueux et continu, ne présentant pas d’arête au niveau de l’épaule (ce qui permet de classer cette pièce parmi les kalpis, qui étaient une variante de l’hydrie apparue dès le fin du VIe siècle av. J.-C.). Base discoïde et plate – remplaçant l’habituel pied mouluré et richement orné, typique de cette forme – décorée dans la partie inférieure par un motif géométrique très singulier, composé de cercles et de longues tiges disposées en croix et se terminant par une ébauche de fleur de lotus.

Les deux anses horizontales, à section circulaire, sont lisses et sans décoration : elles se terminent par deux larges disques martelés qui garantissent une ample surface de fixation à la panse de récipient. L’anse verticale, qui monte jusqu’au bord où elle est soudée, constitue certainement l’élément le plus intéressant de cette pièce : elle est richement décorée aussi bien dans la partie inférieure (palmette surmontée d’élégantes tiges à volutes) que vers l’attache supérieure (palmettes et semi-palmettes avec tiges et volutes avec deux roulettes plastiques, disposées verticalement au centre de l’élément) ; le manche est sillonné par quelques lignes en relief.

La lèvre présente une arête et un bord au profil arrondi.

Les hydries étaient les vases grecs à eau par excellence : fabriqué en argile, ce type de vase pansu, muni de trois anses de préhension (les deux anses horizontales servaient pour le transport ; tandis que la verticale permettait de soulever et incliner le récipient pour en verser le liquide), était utilisé pour stocker et transporter l’eau potable nécessaire au ravitaillement domestique, comme le prouvent les nombreuses scènes peintes sur la céramique attique dès le VIe siècle av. J.-C. : les récipients étaient remplis à la fontaine et transportés sur la tête par les femmes jusqu’au foyer familial.

Les pièces en bronze étaient en revanche beaucoup plus rares et précieuses ; elles ont le plus souvent été mises au jour dans des tombes (les hydries sont souvent utilisées comme urnes cinéraires renfermant les cendres du défunt) ou dans les sanctuaires, où elles étaient soit offertes à la divinité comme objets de luxe (parmi les dédiant on comptait par exemple des athlètes ayant reçu l’hydrie comme prix après une victoire ou des militaires vainqueurs d’une bataille qui offraient une partie de leur butin, etc.) soit utilisées lors de différents rituels : l’eau pour les purifications ou l’aspersion des animaux à immoler (auxquels on lavait le front avant le sacrifice) était le plus souvent stockée et transportée dans des hydries.

Typologiquement cette pièce est caractérisée par le profil allongé avec l’épaule très peu prononcée et la présence d’une petite base plate à la place du pied : ces éléments, très différents des hydries archaïques et du début du Ve siècle, annoncent l’évolution de certaines formes du IVe siècle que l’on remarque aussi bien dans la vaisselle en céramique (cf. par exemple les hydries mises au jour à Olynthe) que dans les versions plus luxueuses en métal (comme par exemple l’oenochoé en bronze de la tombe dite de Philippe trouvée à Vergina, dans le nord de la Grèce).

Art scythe, VIIe - début du VIe s. av. J.-C. Bronze H : 19 cm Casque entier et dans un état remarquable. Bronze massif. Surface lisse avec belle patine verte. Légère déformation du côté droit près de l’arcade sourcilière et de l’oreille ; petites fissures visibles à cet endroit. Bord inférieur percé d’une série de trous réguliers.

A l’intérieur, la surface n’est pas polie : pour rendre le casque plus confortable, la face interne était probablement recouverte d’une doublure en cuir ou en feutrine.

La forme de ce casque est très simple : il s’agit d’une calotte arrondie et régulière qui ne présente aucun dispositif pour la protection du visage : il n’y a ni protège-joues ni protège-nez. Sur la partie antérieure, le bord forme deux demi-cercles qui reproduisent les arcades sourcilières. A la hauteur du nez, le bord est pointu : une arête vive part de cette pointe et se termine au niveau de la bague à section circulaire qui servait, selon toute probabilité, à fixer un panache ou un autre ornement. Dans la partie inférieure, le bord est plat et régulier, sauf au-dessus de la nuque où il présente un petit décalage, sans doute pour faciliter le mouvement de la tête vers l’arrière.

Malgré sa simplicité, la forme arrondie permettait à ce casque de bien absorber les coups, qui devaient glisser sur la surface ; son plus grand inconvénient était certainement le grand poids, qui le rendait peu confortable et inapte à une utilisation prolongée.

La signification précise des trous circulaires percés juste au-dessus du bord se prête à différentes interprétations : ils pouvaient servir à fixer d’autres parties de protection (pour les épaules et le dos), ou même des éléments de décoration, comme le prouve un des exemplaires trouvés dans le tumulus n. 2 de Kelermès (tout au sud de l’actuelle Russie), qui était orné de diadèmes en or. On peut aussi imaginer que le bonnet interne était retenu par des fils ou des lanières qui passaient par ces trous.

Du fait de leur choix tactique qui privilégiait presque exclusivement la cavalerie, domaine dans lequel les Scythes étaient passés maîtres, l’équipement défensif du guerrier scythe était réduit au minimum et se limitait essentiellement au bouclier que les cavaliers portaient aussi bien à cheval que dans les corps-à-corps au sol. En fait, leur capacité de mener des attaques soudaines et leur rapidité dans les mouvements de repli ou de fuite étaient leur meilleure défense. Pour ce faire des armes légères et facilement maniables (arc avec carquois et flèches, épée, éventuellement un bouclier) étaient indispensables : ainsi, les casques, les cuirasses et cnémides (protège-jambes) sont plutôt rares dans les contextes scythes.

A partir du Ve siècle av. J.-C., les Scythes ont emprunté différents modèles d’équipement défensif aux Grecs et aux Thraces : c’étaient soit des importations, soit des imitations fabriquées localement. Des casques de type attique, corinthien, chalcidien et thrace sont attestés dans plusieurs tombeaux. A cette époque, probablement en raison du coût et de la rareté des exemplaires grecs, un modèle local plus léger, fait de lamelles métalliques, a aussi été développé. Auparavant, entre le VIIe et le VIe siècle av. J.-C., il a existé un type de casque à calotte scythe, en bronze fondu, que les spécialistes appellent «du Kouban» (du nom de la région caucasienne d’où provient le plus grand nombre d’exemplaires actuellement conservés).

Ses caractéristiques et son aspect sont les mêmes que ceux du couvre-chef en question, qui appartient donc à ce groupe.

Son origine précise est encore discutée : les exemples connus sont relativement peu nombreux, mais les sites où ces casques ont été retrouvés sont dispersés sur une très large zone, qui va des régions plus occidentales (Kelermès, à l’ouest du Caucase) à la Mongolie actuelle (Samarkand, Ouzbékistan et jusqu’à Egiin-Gol, en Mongolie).

Art égyptien, Ancien Empire (IIIe dynastie, env. XXVIIIe – XXVIIe s. av. J.-C.) Pierre calcaire Dim : 64 x 26 cm Bas-relief gravé sur une plaque vaguement rectangulaire et oblongue, présentant un léger décalage entre le tableau central travaillé et les parties latérales à peine aplaties et piquetées. Partie postérieure simplement dégrossie.

Le relief représente une femme assise sur une chaise à pieds de taureau ; devant elle se trouve la table à offrandes (chargée de six tranches de pain et surmontée par deux morceaux de viande) qui précède la liste des objets lui appartenant.

Son nom, Sen-Reh (probable abréviation de Senet-Rehou) est inscrit en gros hiéroglyphes juste devant son visage. Elle est habillée d’une longue robe nouée sur l’épaule gauche, tandis que l’autre épaule est nue ; le bras droit est tendu en direction de la table à offrande tandis que le gauche est plié vers le haut, avec la main qui touche la poitrine (probablement faute d’espace, la main gauche est plus petite que la droite). La coiffure est d’un type particulier, bouclée et courte sur l’arrière mais formant de longues mèches droites sur l’avant.

La liste des objets, souvent accompagnés de leur nom en hiéroglyphes et d’une indication de quantité (la plante de lotus devant la ligne 1 et 2 est le symbole du chiffre mille, la forme en monticule des trois dernières lignes indique dix), occupe toute la partie droite de la scène et est divisée en sept lignes. Parmi les objets clairement identifiables on trouve (de haut en bas) des miroirs (ligne 1), des récipients contenant de l’huile ou d’autres liquides (ligne 2) tandis que dans les quatre dernières lignes sont mentionnés des vêtements de luxe et d’autres vases. Les signes de la ligne 3 sont très particuliers puisqu’ils semblent indiquer des constructions carrées, qui seraient des modèles réduits de magasins ou, plus difficilement, des lieux de culte : les premiers sont survolés par un oiseau tandis qu’au-dessus des deux autres se trouvent un bras (à lire comme le verbe «donner» ?). Du point de vue de l’écriture, l’absence de déterminatifs, qui est néanmoins habituelle à une époque aussi archaïque, rend la compréhension plus difficile et imprécise.

Cette stèle – d’un type rare et qui, malgré une certaine naïveté, nous fournit d’importants renseignements sur la vie et les croyances des anciens Egyptiens – appartient à une groupe de reliefs reproduisant toujours le même schéma, caractérisé par la présence du (de la) défunt(e) assis(e) sur la gauche de l’image, de la table à offrandes et des biens qui lui appartiennent : pendant la IIe et la IIIe dynasties, ces plaques ornaient une paroi de la niche à offrande des mastabas.

C’est certainement de ces représentations que tirent leur origine les scènes similaires sculptées sur le tableau des célèbres stèles fausse-porte (partie supérieure), qui, à partir de la dynastie suivante, sont devenues un élément fondamental de l’architecture funéraire (surtout privée) de l’Ancien Empire, puisqu’elles marquaient la limite entre le monde des vivants et celui des défunts.

Art romain, Ier - IIe s. apr. J.-C. Marbre H : 52.2 cm Œuvre complète mais surface usée ; touffes sur la tête et bec ébréchés. Pupilles rapportées mais perdues, insérées dans les profondes cavités du globe oculaire.

Statue grandeur nature représentant un hibou (reconnaissable par rapport à la chouette grâce aux touffes de plumes visibles au sommet de la tête) se tenant debout, avec la patte gauche légèrement avancée. Il est posé sur une petite base arrondie dont la surface irrégulière imite un terrain rocailleux naturel. Sculpté d’un seul tenant avec la base, un socle carré, plus petit, servait à fixer la statue à son emplacement originel, qui est actuellement inconnu : le fait que la queue de l’oiseau déborde de la base pourrait indiquer que la statue se trouvait au sommet d’une colonne ou sur le bord d’un mur.

Malgré l’usure superficielle, on se rend parfaitement compte de la grande qualité de cette pièce : proportions correctes, attitude naturelle, anatomie réaliste sont les caractéristiques stylistiques les plus importantes de l’image en examen et permettent de la rapprocher des meilleurs exemples de la sculpture animalière romaine de l’époque impériale. Le rapace, la tête à peine tournée à droite, le bec entrouvert, le plumage épais et duveteux et les griffes pointues, fixe son regarde devant lui, comme pour mettre le spectateur en garde.

Dans les recherches modernes sur la sculpture antique, les animaux occupent une place peu importante, probablement parce que les exemples d’images animalières attribuées à de grands maîtres sont très rares (les plus célèbres sont la Vache allaitant son petit attribuée à Myron, l’auteur entre autres du plus célèbre discobole, et le Lion tombé de Lysippe). Mais il suffit d’une visite à la salle des animaux du Museo Pio Clementino au Vatican (que l’on appelle aussi le «Zoo de pierre») ou d’analyser les statues des Musées Capitolins ou de la Collection Torlonia pour confirmer l’importance que les figures ou les groupes plastiques représentant des animaux pouvaient avoir et le niveau artistique qu’ils arrivaient à atteindre.

Cependant, contrairement à la pièce en examen, il faut tenir compte du fait que de nombreuses statues de ces collections ont fait l’objet de restaurations parfois très lourdes et importantes au XVIIIe siècle.

Dans les textes et dans les représentations antiques, le hibou et la chouette ne sont guère différenciés : animaux nocturnes, se déplaçant et chassant dès la tombée de la nuit, ils sont perçus comme doués de pouvoirs particuliers. C’est ainsi que, grâce à sa capacité de «voir» dans les ténèbres, la chouette est devenue l’oiseau d’Athéna/Minerve, la déesse de la sagesse et de la connaissance. Dans le domaine de la prédiction, dans lequel ces rapaces jouaient un rôle de premier plan, le vol d’une chouette peut être considéré de bon augure mais son ululement est un présage de malheur.

Dans l’iconographie, les chouettes les plus célèbres sont certainement celles qui apparaissent sur les monnaies athéniennes, mais à l’époque archaïque on connaît aussi quelques vases modelés en forme de rapace nocturne. Dans l’art plastique, mis à part une statuette d’Orphée accompagnée, parmi d’autres animaux, par deux hiboux (?), on ne connaît pas d’autres statues de hibou ou de chouette. En revanche, ces oiseaux sont un sujet plus fréquent sur les mosaïques d’époque romaine, où ils apparaissent comme simple motif de décoration parmi d’autres volatiles ou le plus souvent avec une valeur apotropaïque, comme oiseau détournant le mal et protégeant des dangers (mosaïque d’El Jem en Tunisie et du Palais des Conservateurs à Rome).

A titre de simple hypothèse, on peut imaginer que cette belle sculpture, posée sur une colonne ou devant un édifice, servait à protéger l’architecture concernée ou ses visiteurs.

Panneau ayant appartenu à une frise plus ample, peut-être ornée d’autres scènes comparables. Sol indiqué par une bande claire, partie supérieure délimitée par une ligne horizontale blanc crème avec restes ocre et rouge vif ayant fait partie du panneau superposé, actuellement perdu.

Le fragment est orné d’une scène d’amour avec coitus a tergo : un jeune homme agenouillé, à la musculature bien développée, est en train de s’enlever le manteau gris bleuté avec le bras droit tandis qu’il appuie la main gauche sur le dos de la jeune femme, qui se trouve juste devant lui : les formes pleines et féminines de son corps correspondent aux canons de beauté à la mode dans le monde classique. Elle porte un bandeau rouge sous son sein, qui jouait le rôle de soutien-gorge (que les Romains appelaient fascia pectoralis), sa parure comprend des bracelets aux bras et à la cheville ; dans ses mains, elle tient un gros coussin (?) vert-gris, le seul élément de décoration d’intérieur visible.

La qualité artistique de la peinture est excellente : les figures isolées ressortent parfaitement du fond noir, la scène est vivante et réaliste, l’attitude et les détails anatomiques (corps mais aussi expression des visages) sont rendus de façon naturelle.

Longtemps tenue volontairement méconnue et écartée par la critique moderne, la sexualité était vécue dans le monde antique païen avec naturel et tranquillité, sans sentiments répressifs à son encontre.

Comme le prouvent les découvertes faites à Pompéi, dans la peinture romaine, les scènes érotiques sont souvent étonnantes pour leur réalisme et diversification. Elles apparaissent dans des lieux que l’on considère aujourd’hui appropriés, comme sur les murs des lupanars (lupanar) ou des bains publics, mais également dans les maisons privées (pièces de séjour, chambres à coucher) : dans ce cas, plus que de simples images de la vie quotidienne, ces représentations sont probablement encore à mettre en relation avec les croyances religieuses sur les puissances régénératrices, sur la fertilité et la fécondité (humaine et plus en général de la nature), ainsi qu’avec tous les comportements censés les favoriser.

Dans un monde essentiellement masculin comme la société romaine, le mariage servait surtout pour la procréation et il était considéré comme naturel qu’un citoyen cherche des plaisirs sexuels en dehors de sa maison. L’approche globalement plus ouverte de la sexualité est documentée non seulement par les sources antiques (textes littéraires et graffiti gravés sur les parois des maisons), mais aussi par les innombrables objets artistiques (statues, vaisselle, peintures murales, etc.) ou d’utilisation quotidienne comme les lampes à huiles ou les «amulettes» (amulettes en forme de phallus, images de Priape, etc.) ; même la forme de certains pains ou gâteaux pouvaient parfois reprendre explicitement le monde sexuel.

Art romain, vers 120 − 140 apr. J.-C. Marbre H : 43.2 cm Surface, lisse et d’aspect mat, en excellent état. laissant parfaitement observer les différents détails anatomiques et apprécier le remarquable travail. Partie supérieure du crâne, partiellement piquetée, certainement complétée par un élément sculpté dans un autre bloc de pierre ou modelé en plâtre.

Buste creux, soutenu par un pilier de forme évasée et se terminant, vers l’avant, par un petit chapiteau ; base cylindrique à profil concave. Partie inférieure de la base coupé droit et piquetée, avec restes d’un petit tenon rectangulaire ayant servi à fixer le buste à son support.

Portrait de taille un peu plus petite que nature (environ les deux tiers) d’une femme âgée. Tête légèrement tournée vers l’épaule droite ; cou à la musculature bien nuancée, long et mince ; visage allongé, le menton est pointu mais peu prononcé. Elle est habillée d’une tunique légère avec manteau, qui de l’épaule gauche descend vers la poitrine et remonte vers l’autre épaule, passe derrière le cou et descend de nouveau sur le côté gauche. Traitement des plis différencié : une multitude de petits traits verticaux et rapprochés caractérisent l’étoffe de la tunique (tissée en coton ou en lin), tandis que le manteau (en laine) est plus épais et lourd (plis amples et profonds, circulaires).

Cette image est indiscutablement un portrait personnel, comme le prouvent de nombreux traits individuels sur lesquels le sculpteur a bien insisté : les arcades sourcilières en relief, les pommettes saillantes, les joues creuses, la fossette du menton, les yeux profondément creusés, le nez proéminent et bossu, la différenciation des deux parties du visage. Les formes sont rendues par un modelage sûr et précis ; les nuances plastiques animent les amples surfaces des joues, du cou et du front. Les yeux sont en amande, avec l’iris circulaire et un léger trou qui marque les pupilles (la caroncule lacrymale est travaillée de manière réaliste, mais sans utilisation du foret) ; la bouche est large et horizontale, avec les lèvres fermées ; le nez est proéminent, ses ailes sont petites et arrondies ; les oreilles sont bien sculptées. L’expression de ce visage est sévère et concentrée, même si le regard semble un peu perdu dans le vide : cette femme était certainement la matrona d’une famille appartenant à la noblesse de l’époque romaine. Toutes les vertus que l’on prêtait à ces femmes sont exprimées dans ce portrait : sérieux, autorité, sobriété, constance.

La chevelure, qui est particulièrement élaborée, entoure le front de façon nette et linéaire. A la hauteur de l’occiput les cheveux sont réunis en une tresse épaisse et très longue (dans la réalité il s’agissait probablement d’un postiche), qui s’enroule sept fois autour de la tête comme si cette femme portait un turban. Cette importante surface est parcourue d’incisions horizontales et en zigzag, qui indiquent clairement les mèches qui se superposent et se croisent. Devant les oreilles, de petites boucles en léger relief sont sculptées librement.

De même que pour beaucoup d’autres portraits féminins, la chevelure est le trait le plus important pour le classement de cette tête. C’est au début du IIe siècle de notre ère que les femmes romaines ont commencé à porter de telles coiffures, dont il existe d’ailleurs plusieurs variantes : avec ou sans frange ondulée au-dessus du front, avec ou sans chignon fixé sur l’occiput ou sur le sommet de la tête, une ou plusieurs tresses, etc. Sabina, femme de l’empereur Hadrien, a été la première à inaugurer cette mode, que de nombreuses femmes de la cour impériale ont par la suite fréquemment adoptée, comme le prouve le portrait en question.

Ce buste, pour une fois complet, c’est-à-dire qui a conservé son pied, offre l’occasion de rappeler que cette manière de réduire l’homme à la partie supérieure de son tronc, qu’on appelle buste, est une invention des Romains. Selon eux, la tête, siège de la pensée, suffit pour représenter la personnalité. Et on peut s’en tenir à quelques éléments de la tenue vestimentaire, sans la figurer en entier, pour suggérer le rang social et la fonction occupés par le personnage, homme ou femme. Par exemple, une broche (fibula) sur l’épaule permet d’identifier le manteau (paludamentum) des militaires, donc de classer le modèle dans cette catégorie.

Art égyptien, fin du Nouvel Empire (époque ramesside, XIIIe - XIIe s. av. J.-C.) Pierre verdâtre (grauwacke ?)

L : 6.5 cm Scarabée pratiquement intact, petites ébréchures sur le bord ; décoration en feuille d’or perdue.

Forme reproduisant l’aspect de l’insecte de façon simplifiée mais complète, avec dos voûté, pattes linéaires en relief et striées, tête stylisée et élytres finement incisés. Base ovale et plate portant, incisée en douze lignes régulières, la version classique du chapitre 30b du Livres des Morts.

L’identité du défunt est mentionnée à la ligne 1, avec une gravure serrée et irrégulière : cela laisse penser que ces objets étaient fabriqués en série et personnalisés au moment de leur vente, lorsque le graveur les complétait avec un nom indiqué par l’acquéreur. Le nom du propriétaire pose quelques problèmes et n’est pas clairement compréhensible : Nes-ImenIpet (appartenant à Amon de Luxor) ou Nes-Ipet-Imen (appartenant au Harme d’Amon).

La formule du texte est la suivante : «L’Osiris Nes-Imen-Ipet, justifié, il a dit : cœur de ma mère, deux fois, mon cœur qui apparaît, ne te dresse pas contre moi, devant les piliers, ne me repousse pas dans le tribunal, ne sois pas hostile devant les gardiens de la balance, tu es mon Ka qui est dans mon ventre, Khnoum qui rend prospères mes membres, tu sors vers un lieu beau, ne calomnie pas mon nom, parmi les juges qui mettent les hommes à leur place. Ce sera bon pour nous, bon, écoute la générosité du jugement, ne mens pas contre moi à côté du dieu, évite de faire cela à tout moment (?)».

Cette pièce possède de très bons parallèles datés du Nouvel Empire, plutôt vers la fin de la période. Comme souvent, l’inscription présente quelques variantes particulières par rapport au Livre des Morts, parmi lesquelles la plus significative est le déterminatif de la pyramide qui rappelle les pyramidons de Deir el Medineh (cf. ligne 9) : il confirmerait la datation et pourrait même indiquer une piste pour la localisation du lieu de production.

Plus grands que les habituelles amulettes-pendentifs de la même forme et dépourvus de perforations, les scarabées de cœur sont un élément indispensable du mobilier funéraire des notables égyptiens : portés autour du cou ou insérés entre les bandelettes de la momie, ils remplaçaient le cœur réel du défunt, qui avait son emplacement définitif dans un des quatre vases canopes. Ces objets, que l’on peut assimiler à des amulettes, sont taillés dans une pierre foncée (gris-vert, noir), généralement de la serpentine, du grauwacke, de la stéatite, etc. Les exemplaires de meilleure qualité, comme la pièce en examen, pouvaient être ornés de bandelettes en feuille d’or soulignant les bords et les élytres.

Siège de la raison et de la responsabilité personnelle, le cœur devait témoigner sur la vie du défunt devant le tribunal de Maât et lui permettre, si le témoignage était favorable, d’entrer dans l’au-delà : ces croyances expliquent la présence de l’invocation inscrite sous la base.

Art byzantin, VIe - VIIe s. apr. J.-C. Bronze Dim : 1.9 cm x 1.9 cm Petites traces d’usure témoignant de l’utilisation antique de l’objet, sinon pièce pratiquement intacte.

Poids de forme carrée et très mince (1 à 2 mm d’épaisseur). Le décor (une face seulement est ornée, l’arrière est lisse et plat) est finement estampillé et organisé autour de la figure centrale d’un archange nimbé : debout et pourvu d’une longue paire d’ailes, ce personnage tient dans sa main gauche le globe terrestre. Dans la droite levée il a une hampe, le labarum, surmonté d’un cercle contenant une croix stylisée (à l’origine le labarum était une enseigne militaire appartenant à la cavalerie romaine : Constantin, après avoir abandonné le paganisme, l’a adopté comme symbole chrétien et y a fait ajouter une croix et le monogramme du Christ, le chrisme). L’archange porte une tunique et un manteau drapé autour de sa taille et de ses jambes ; ses ailes s’étendent de part et d’autre de son corps, une étoile brille au-dessus de sa tête.

Il est entouré des bustes de deux empereurs au-dessus desquels se trouve une croix byzantine : les deux figures portent la couronne à pendeloque et sont habillées d’un manteau agrafé sur l’épaule par une fibule. Dans les angles inférieurs, faisant le pendant des deux croix, les lettres N et A sont respectivement l’abréviation de nomisma et le chiffre 1 (A = 1 : ce poids correspond à un nomisma).

Ce type de poids officiels, que les hauts fonctionnaires comme les éparques et les préfets avaient l’autorité de frapper, étaient destinés à servir de mesure étalon : la présence de deux empereurs et la remarquable qualité de l’exécution sont de bons indices pour croire que ce poids provient d’un atelier officiel, voire impérial de Constantinople (?).

Le verre, le plomb, le bronze et, en de rares occasions, l’argent et l’or, étaient employés pour la fabrication de poids étalons ou commerciaux, qui pouvaient adopter toute sorte de formes (carrée, circulaire, octogonale, etc.). La représentation d’un ou de plusieurs bustes impériaux correspond à un type de poids en lien avec la propagande impériale.

Le système métrique duodécimal byzantin, mis en place en 309 par Constantin, perdurera jusqu’au Xe siècle. Il est basé sur la litra, qui peut être divisé en 72 solidi. Le solidus sera connu plus tard sous le terme de nomisma, qui désigne la monnaie d’or frappée par Byzance. Le nomisma pesait, théoriquement, entre 4,54 et 4,55 g.

Art romain, Ier s. apr. J.-C. Bronze H : 29 cm Excellent état de conservation ; bras droit perdu, pieds et partie inférieure de la jambe gauche recollés ; yeux rapportés mais perdus. Statuette montée sur socle creux en forme de tambour mouluré, probablement d’origine. Surface de couleur brun avec quelques taches en léger relief avec patine verte. Peut-être à cause des restaurations, la statuette penche vers l’arrière.

La figure représente Héraclès, le héros grec par excellence : il se tient debout, le poids de son corps supporté par la jambe gauche tandis que la droite est reculée (seule la pointe du pied droit touche le sol). Le bras droit descendait le long du corps et tenait certainement un attribut, probablement la massue ou l’arc ; le gauche est plié et dirigé vers le spectateur : dans la main Héraclès tient trois objets sphériques dans lesquels on peut reconnaître les pommes des Hespérides. La recherche de ces fruits, avec le long périple jusqu’au mont Atlas, fut le dernier des douze travaux du héros.

La tête et le visage d’Héraclès tel qu’il est représenté dans cette statuette correspondent à la typologie habituelle de héros, dépeint comme un homme d’âge mûr. Il a les cheveux court, coiffés en petites mèches ondulées, un barbe courte mais drue tandis que la moustache couvre sa lèvre supérieure ; le visage, à l’expression sévère et consciente de sa propre force et de sa réussite, est idéalisé et à l’expression sévère.

Stylistiquement et artistiquement la statuette, qui est à dater du début de l’époque impériale, probablement du Ier siècle apr. J.-C., est d’une excellente qualité : aussi bien les proportions que le naturel de la position ou le rendu et la richesse de l’anatomie n’ont rien à envier aux meilleurs figures en bronze de cette période.

Typologiquement, cette statuette est une des nombreuses variations créées par les artistes romains, sans doute inspirées des images d’Héraclès qui ont vu le jour à la fin de l’époque classique ou à l’époque hellénistique et qui montrent le héros debout mais dans un moment de repos. Malgré quelques petites différences (attributs, positions des jambes, des bras ou de la tête, etc.) une attitude similaire se trouve par exemple dans les images de l’Héraclès Chiaramonti, de Boston/Oxford ou de New York, qui sont des copies romaines d’originaux grecs. Cette typologie apparaît encore au IIIe siècle par exemple dans les sarcophages représentant les travaux d’Héraclès.

Cristal de roche H : 6.4 cm - D : 4.7cm Objet parfaitement conservé ; quelques ébréchures et légères fissures.

Taillé dans un fragment de cristal de roche de forme cylindrique, entièrement évidé ; paroi ajourée. Il représente une architecture circulaire soutenue par six petits pieds et une base profilée qui soutient six colonnettes (chacune correspond à l’un des pieds) : ces dernières sont posées sur une base et surmontées par un chapiteau enrichis de trois lignes horizontales. Six arcs arrondis – préfigurant peut-être déjà le style roman – relient une colonnette à l’autre. Le support se termine par autre élément circulaire avec moulure, comme une sorte de col, probablement prévu pour recevoir et soutenir un petit récipient comme par exemple une coupelle.

Il s’agit d’une magnifique pièce, taillée avec grande maîtrise et régularité, à laquelle un seul autre objet, provenant d’Afrique du Nord, peut être rapproché sur le plan de la forme et qualité. En effet, au début du XXe siècle, lors de fouilles à Carthage, furent trouvés plusieurs objets en cristal de roche qui avaient été cachés dans une citerne et qui, selon une hypothèse souvent retenue, provenaient du trésor d’une église enfoui en toute hâte. En plus d’un support cylindrique à six colonnettes du même type que celui en examen, ce petit ensemble comprend une coupelle avec poissons incisés, deux statuettes représentant un dauphin et un lion, une coupelle elliptique fragmentaire, une cuillère en argent à cuilleron ovale.

Actuellement, le groupe est conservé au Metropolitan Museum de New York.

A la différence de cette pièce, l’exemplaire de Carthage est surmonté d’une coupelle circulaire taillée d’un seul tenant avec le reste du support : leur utilisation précise n’est pas connue, mais on imagine qu’elles servaient dans le domaine rituel – peut-être déjà chrétien – comme brûle-parfum ou plus probablement pour contenir des liquides précieux (huiles, eau sainte, etc.). Il est également possible que de tels objets appartenaient à la décoration d’un ensemble plus grand et plus riche, qui faisait peut-être partie du trésor d’une église.

Les objets artistiques et précieux taillés dans du cristal ont une tradition très ancienne, remontant au moins au Néolithique : pierre de la lumière – que la lumière traverse mais qui en même temps la fractionne en sept couleurs – le cristal (du grec ancien κρυσταλλοσ, krýstallos qui signifie «glace» : cette pierre est un excellent conducteur thermique que les riches Romains utilisaient pour se refroidir les mains en été) symbolisait l’union des contraires entre la matière solide et la transparence immatérielle. Certainement en raison de son aspect pur, on attribuait à cette pierre une valeur magique très positive, curative et prophylactique.

Parmi d’autres pièces en cristal de roche de la même époque utilisées dans un cadre cultuel chrétien et représentant une architecture, il faut mentionner la célèbre Grotte de la Vierge qui enrichit le trésor de la basilique de Saint-Marc à Venise.

Art romain, début du IIIe s. apr. J.-C. Marbre Dim : 45 x 175 x 52.7 cm Sarcophage complet mais constitué de nombreux fragments recollés; par endroits ébréchures, cassures et rebouchages.

Cuve quadrangulaire, ornée en relief sur trois faces, dont la principale se trouve centrée sur le portrait du défunt, sous forme de buste, placé dans une coquille entourée d’une scène parfaitement symétrique de thiase marin (du grec ancien Θιασοσ, procession célébrant une divinité ; le plus souvent il s’agit de Dionysos accompagné de satyres et ménades), où les figures baignent dans la mer, suggérée ici par les vagues visibles à la base de l’image. La coquille est soutenue par deux centaures marins, qui tiennent de l’autre main un aviron. Chacun d’eux porte sur sa croupe une néréide assise «en amazone» : d’une main celles-ci tiennent délicatement une extrémité de la draperie, déployée au-dessus de leur tête. La frise est complétée de chaque côté par deux autres néréides qui nagent en s’agrippant au cou d’un animal marin, un taureau à droite et une biche (?) à gauche : leur draperie gonfle dans leur dos telle une voile de navire. Sous leur ventre joue un éros, monté sur un dauphin tandis que d’autres de ces mammifères, en miniature, bondissent entre les flots.

Les centaures marins ont la barbe et les cheveux hirsutes, pour exprimer leur sauvagerie, des pinces de crabes poussent sur leur front. Les néréides présentent un visage paisible et une chevelure souple et ondulée, séparée par une raie médiane.

Sur les flancs de la cuve, esquissés un peu plus hâtivement, deux amours chevauchent des animaux marins en les guidant par la bride, un cheval d’un côté et un griffon (?) de l’autre.

La représentation d’une scène marine dans un contexte funéraire obéit à une préoccupation précise : évoquer le dernier voyage du défunt et l’accompagner pendant son déplacement vers l’île des Bienheureux. Pour les Anciens, le monde était une île entourée d’eau, l’Océan, qu’il fallait franchir pour accéder au royaume des morts.

Au centre de l’image, le défunt présenté dans la coquille, parfaitement vu de face, est une femme, probablement encore jeune, aux traits réguliers, fins et bien modelés : ses yeux au regard décidé font d’elle une matrona, responsable de sa maisonnée. Elle est revêtue d’une tunique aux plis désordonnés sur le décolleté et d’un manteau (stola) qui couvre ses épaules. Sa coiffure, séparée par une raie médiane, forme un triangle sur le front et descend jusqu’au cou à gauche et à droite en cachant les oreilles. Ce type de coiffure, enveloppante et rigide, correspond à celle que Julia Domna (la femme de l’empereur Septime Sévère), a mis à la mode. D’où la date que l’on propose pour ce sarcophage : le premier quart du IIIe siècle de notre ère (Julia Domna est décédée en 217 apr. J.-C.).

Ce sarcophage constitue un bel exemple de la série de cuves, assez nombreuses et bien connues, décorées avec un thiase marin, où le portrait du défunt se trouve au centre de l’image principale, encadré d’un grand coquillage. Parmi ses meilleurs parallèles il faut citer en tout cas le sarcophage Ma 396 du Louvre, provenant de Rome (collection Borghese), qui présente une scène presque identique dans le traitement stylistique des figures ainsi que dans la disposition et l’attitude des personnages.

Le centre de production de cette série de sarcophages se trouvait probablement dans la capitale impériale, Rome.

Ancienne collection de William Waldorf Astor (devenu premier baron Astor de Hever, Hever Castle, Kent), acquis à Rome entre 1890 et 1905 ; par héritage resté dans la famille, propriété de Gavin Astor, second baron Astor de Hever ; Sotheby’s Londres, 12 juillet 1983, lot 365.
