Documents needed for Application to Graduate Programs • An official transcript of all university-level courses taken. A comparative mark/grade table if CGPA on the transcript is not out of 4.00. • Attested photocopies of diplomas received from a university or equivalent institutions (i.e. 4 years study bachelor degree). English translations of these documents are necessary if they are in any language other than English. • Documentation of scores received for English and academic proficiency exams/tests. This is not valid for the programs in which the medium of instruction is Turkish. Native speakers should indicate the place of birth and citizenship. All others should provide documents of any one of the below given English Proficiency Tests. • Three letters of reference (not required for EMU graduates). • Documents • Give details of any grant/scholarships that you have already been awarded (valid for your studentship at EMU) (add documents). • Give details of any application(s) for a grant/scholarship that you have made (add documents). • Statement of Purpose / Intention (Please submit on a separate sheet: Your purpose in applying to the program chosen, explaining your motivation as well as the areas of specialization which would be of interest to you within the discipline). • A photocopy of your passport or I.D. card. • Two passport-sized (approx. 6 cm x 5 cm) photographs. • Program specific documents: Architecture (Ph.D. & Master): Portfolio. • Candidates are required to submit a document of financial guarantee showing that sufficient funds are available for tuition and living expenses.

General Admission Requirements

English Language Test

Applicants for master‘s programs with thesis must possess a bachelor’s degree with CPGA > 2.50/4.00. For some programs such as professional degree programs, CGPA‘s of 2.00-2.49 may be acceptable subject to Faculty Board decision. Applicants for doctoral programs must possess a master‘s degree. The Turkish citizens should have an ALES score of a minimum of 55 received within last three years. GRE (mathematical) = 610 or GMAT= 450 are equivalent to ALES=55. In some programs additional requirements may be expected. For any further details related departments should be consulted. However students applying for non-thesis programs are exempted from ALES.

Note for Turkish citizens: An applicant who does not possess the ‘ALES’ certificate may register as a special student. No diplomas are issued for special students. However such students receive a document issued by the Registrar‘s Office specifying courses taken and grades obtained. At most half of the credits necessary to complete the program can be transferred from the program registered as a special student to the current program of study when the student applies as a regular student.

English Language Requirement For the programs whose medium of instruction is English, all written work is assessed at standard international levels of academic English. Hence, all applicants for whom English is a second language is required to present a recent TOEFL or IELTS score or to pass a proficiency examination organized by EMU. English Language Tests and their minimum scores accepted by EMU (valid for both masters and doctoral programs) are listed right. The tests should be taken within last two years except for ÜDS which is valid for lifetime and KPDS valid for 5 years.

Those who do not have a recognized English language qualification (IELTS, TOEFL etc.), and who have not scored 75 or above on the EMU English Language Proficiency Test (which tests Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking skills) are placed in supplementary non-credit English language courses according to their levels. The Department of English Language Teaching (ELT) applies different scales regarding the EMU Proficiency Test. The candidates/ students are advised to contact the ELT Department for specific rules and regulations.

Research Assistantships

Every semester each faculty allocates a number of research assistant positions to graduate students. A full-time research assistant gets exemption from tuition fees as well as a salary. Part-time research assistantships are also available.
