Backtrack is part of the solution to the spinal condition Scoliosis.
If unfamiliar, Scoliosis is the abnormal twisting and lateral curvature of the spine. Scoliosis curves typically progress at a rate of 1 degree a month during the adolescent growth spurt (the fastest rate of progression).
The nature of scoliosis is to worsen overtime āno doctor or otherwise can tell how slowly or fast a condition will get worse. Once a patient has scoliosis they have it for life. The important issue then becomes determining best course for treatment for likely how bad scoliosis can get by managing its progression effectively.ā
Scoliosis is 3 dimensional ā if one dimension gets worse, the others will follow. The curve progresses in the adolescent stage between 10-16. More commonly with females. 12-16 for males.
For parents if your child has scoliosis, they should minimally be checked for growth every month because if your child is growing, so too is the likelihood that their curvature will progress alongside that growth and development.

Based on extensive research I wanted to design a product which could see what the naked eye could not. To keep an eye on und erlying small changes that would make a long term big impact on the diagnosed. Designing a device which tracks your spinal movements by identifying your muscles reaction.
When a vertebrae moves / twists the surrounding muscle contracts in reaction. Thus reaction causes electrical currents through that muscle which will be identified by the detection range of BACKTRACK.
Embedded e-textile is the surface material of the device. This is fabric woven with conductive yarn. Which can gather information, transport data and communicate with the user.
The electrical current caused by the muscles contractions, due to the change in growth of the spine / vertebrae is picked up by the e-textiles conductivity.
E-textile seeās what the naked eye does not, whilst giving comfort with little to no disturbance for the wearer.
This is Cobb. Cobb is named after the medical term for the most widely used measurement for quantifying spine curvature. One of three, each designed to track the cervical; thoracic and lumbar. Each Cobb covers a radius of 300mm, detecting any patterned muscle contractions due to scoliosis curvatures.

There are 3 pinnacle points of the spine; the Cervical spine (top) ; Thoracic spine (middle) and Lumbar (bottom). BACKTRACK will consist of 3 individual detectors.
Said detectors will attach to 3 ECG electrodes stuck and placed over the detection ranges. Both ECG and Detector are to be worn 24/7 to the best ability of the user to ensure the most consistent data is retrieved to show any growth rates and rhythms.
Muscles move all the time how will it know itās due to scoliosis and not other factors? When inactive or in a dormant state, the specific shifted muscles will contract and produce electronic signals for 72 hours. The consistency of this electric signals will be identifiable and unique to indicate the spine angle has grown.
It is valuable to the diagnosed to give visual to what they are unable to see. The app provides insight for not only the child or parent, but also their doctor. It acts as a form of check-in without the need for practice wait time. It gives control back for those who cannot control their genetic make-up.
