The things you need to consider before setting out depend entirely on what kind of camper you are; are you the kind who's content to lay under a tarp slung between two trees, or do you prefer the modern conveniences of a fully-loaded caravan? Perhaps you're heading off on a solo journey of self-discovery, or maybe you'll need a kid-friendly spot that also caters to four-legged family members.

Whatever the case, you'll find what you're after somewhere throughout this spectacular country.

The more time you spend in the great outdoors, the better you'll come to understand how camp life differs from the comforts of home. If you're new to the whole business, don't let one weekend of forgotten torches ruin it for you. With each adventure comes greater understanding, which will help you better prepare for the next one.

The more you learn about how you like to camp, the more relaxing it will become. The best bit is, how you like to camp is entirely up to you, there's no right or wrong when it comes to the perfect campsite. All you need to remember is to look after our country’s wild places and in return, they'll look after you.

The joy of camping comes from the ability to step out of the everyday hustle and bustle in favour of more serene settings. As the boundaries of our urban landscapes swell and technology blurs the lines between work and personal time, our natural spaces are becoming more and more precious. And with that, we all share a responsibility to care for these environments, to enjoy them without spoiling them for future visitors and to leave them in the same condition – if not better – as when we arrived. Despite popular misconception, carving your initials into a tree will not add meaning to your life, nor will boxing a kangaroo make you irresistible to the opposite sex.

Fortunately, it's easy to take care of our beautiful country, we just need to remember that natural wonders are not there solely for our individual pleasure.

There should be no evidence of our visit once we depart. That means we don't leave rubbish behind (unless it's in a bin that's there for campers to use), we don't damage plants or disturb habitat, we're sure to always stick to tracks and trails, and we treat wildlife with respect, which includes not feeding wild animals.

Campsite facilities are often provided in order to prevent certain kinds of damage to delicate environments and we must be sure to obey all signs.

Washing dishes at wash stations will prevent soap and grease from leaching into waterways, toilet blocks keep our human discharge contained, fire pits isolate campfires from their surrounds and board-walks not only protect fragile plants and animals, they protect us from potentially dangerous terrain.

Campsite Etiquette

There will be times when you're the sole occupant of a peaceful campsite, but it's also likely that you'll be in close quarters with complete strangers. You'll need to make your own assessment of the situation at hand, but as a general rule be sure to respect the space and privacy of your neighbours. By all means say g'day and spark up a conversation, but don't go poking around their site for a bottle opener when it looks like nobody's around. In fact, it's common practice to avoid walking through other campsites altogether. Looking after common areas and tidying up after using shared facilities also contributes to a better shared experience.

Noise can often be an issue at campsites, so it pays to be prepared. If you're the

early-to-bed type, it's wise to pack some earplugs in case of raucous groups or even nearby snorers. If you're more of a night owl be mindful of when others have gone to bed and take it down a notch – remember, they're often the people who are up as soon as the sun rises and may not feel the need to be so quiet if they were kept awake all night. You may also wish to moderate the content of your conversations, particularly when there are kids around, as you never know who might be listening.

Generators are another noisy point of contention and are becoming less common as their use is banned in national parks and many campsites.

Check the rules and be sure to have an alternative power source if need be, such as a solar system or a good battery setup.
