10-STEP HANDLING EXCERCISES This approach is performed to improve your puppy’s ability to handle different types of touch, handling and sensation. It can be performed in any order. Do not put your puppy down if they are agitated or upset. If they are displaying resistance, stop until the puppy calms and then resume! Reward with positive praise and snuggles when done! However, set your puppy up for success and perform the exercises after all needs have been met and your puppy is getting close to nap time.
1. Cover their eyes. 2. Rub and gently tug on their ears (check for ear cleanliness too!). 3. Open their mouth and inspect their teeth and gums. Have they lost any baby teeth? Are they having any alignment issues? 4. Rub their belly in a wide circular motion. 5. Rub your hand up their back and “heavy” pet. You want to ensure they are not opposed or startled by toddler petting or other heavy petting that may occur at some point in their life. 6. Gently tug and twist on their tail. 7. Rub your fingers in between the pads in their paws. 8. Tap on the tip of their nails (helps desensitize for trimming/cutting). 9. Place your hand around their collar and tug and slide around (no dog should have an aversion to having their collar touched). 10. Touch their nose.
