THE UNITED STATES SENATOR FOR GEORGIA

REVEREND RAPHAEL WARNOCK SINCE COMING TO THE UNITED STATES SENATE in January 2021, Georgia Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock has made a name for himself as a tireless champion for the Peach State in Washington, D.C. In just his first year in office, Senator Reverend Warnock has effectively delivered tangible investments and federal policies that are helping Georgia families and communities recover from the economic pains of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; creating new jobs and economic opportunities across the state; keeping schools and small businesses in every corner of Georgia open, and helping strengthen the state’s economy to keep Georgia moving into the future. 8 | EMPOWER ATLANTA MAGAZINE

The pastor and social justice advocate was elected to serve in the United States Senate on January 5, 2021, after winning a special election to replace the late U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA). Throughout his first year in office and during the early months of 2022, Senator Reverend Warnock hasn’t wasted any time making an impact in Washington to benefit Georgians and Americans who are recovering from and planning their futures beyond the pandemic. Senator Reverend Warnock has been laser-focused on lowering rising costs for hardworking families, recently introducing legislation to bring down gas prices at the pump and to lower costs for

insulin and other life-saving prescription drugs. Senator Reverend Warnock has also fought to help protect ordinary Georgian’s wallets by working successfully last fall to loosen up critical federal dollars that helped the Port of Savannah ease supply chain tensions, and he has called for the White House to investigate apparent price-gouging by international ocean carriers who have seen their profits soar over the past year while costs for Georgians have skyrocketed. Senator Reverend Warnock’s focus on lowering

middle-class tax cut benefitting the families of more than 2 million Georgia children. On top of that, Senator Reverend Warnock also championed the bipartisan infrastructure package, which was signed into law last November. Senator Reverend Warnock worked hard to make the law as beneficial to Georgia as possible, including securing significant federal funding in the package to deploy broadband in the state’s rural and other underserved areas, deepen and improve Georgia’s ports, help public transit agencies like MARTA improve and expand service, and invest

costs for Georgians and strengthening their economic security builds on his intense work during his first year in office to help protect the dignity of work, create new jobs, bolster hardworking Georgians’ financial stability, and move Georgia’s economy forward. Senator Reverend Warnock was a strong supporter and critical vote for the COVID relief package passed by the Senate and signed into law in March 2021 that sent much-needed investments directly to Georgia to put vaccine shots in arms, provide critical relief to small business owners to keep their workers on their payroll and their businesses running, and give local schools the support and funding they needed to stay open and make sure Georgia kids were getting the instruction and nutrition they need to excel. Additionally, the Senator is a fierce advocate for the expanded Child Tax Credit passed in the relief package, which provided a historic working and

in more infrastructure projects that will grow jobs across the state. The Senator has established himself as a strident voice for Georgia in the Senate, punching above his weight as a freshman legislator to exert his influence and deliver on several priorities that are important to Georgians. As the proud son of a veteran, Senator Warnock has visited most of Georgia’s esteemed military installations and has been a leading voice in the Senate for Georgia’s servicemembers, military families, veterans, and bases—including successfully securing authorizations and funding for important infrastructure improvements at Georgia’s military bases, and an almost three percent pay raise for men and women currently serving in uniform, as well as leading necessary oversight of and efforts to improve Georgia’s VA facilities. This is in addition to legislation Senator Reverend Warnock successfully authored and passed to study disparities in service benefits for veterans of color, who have historically encountered barriers when trying to take advantage of the benefits they earned through their courageous military service. The Senator has fought hard to strengthen federal support for the nation’s HBCUs, and last year, Senator Warnock also worked to pass legislation to address and prevent hate crimes against Asian-Americans following the tragic March 16, 2021, Atlanta killings that took the lives of 8 Georgians, including six women of Asian descent. The Senator also led the fight in Washington to pass federal voting rights legislation—a priority he will continue pressing until it gets done. A longtime health care advocate, Senator Reverend Warnock has pushed hard during his first year in office to improve and strengthen health care access. In addition to working to lower prescription drug and insulin costs, Senator Warnock was instrumental in securing strong support for a federal fix that would close the Medicaid coverage gap in Georgia and the eleven other states that didn’t expand their state Medicaid programs under the Affordable Care Act; Senator Warnock’s fix would help guarantee access to free and affordable health care coverage for more than 646,000 Georgians. The Senator has also secured millions in federal dollars to support Georgia’s rural hospitals and keep their doors open, and he has been a vocal advocate for addressing the nation’s maternal mortality crisis, introducing several pieces of legislation—including bipartisan bills—aimed at strengthening maternal health in Georgia and across the country. “It is the honor of my life to represent my home state of Georgia in the United States Senate,” Senator Reverend Warnock stated. His deep dedication to addressing the important kitchen table issues for Georgians—from lowering rising costs to bolstering health care and housing to creating good-paying jobs and strengthening Georgia’s infrastructure—is born from his own lived experience, his deeply-rooted faith, and his strong commitment to service. The Senator grew up in Savannah’s Kayton Homes public housing as one of twelve brothers and sisters and often remarked how he was the beneficiary of “good public policy” that led him to college preparatory programs like Upward Bound and supplied the loans he needed to attend and graduate from Morehouse College—inspired by one of his heroes, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—before he went on to earn his doctorate and begin a career in ministry. King when he became the Senior Pastor of Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Dr. King’s spiritual home. Before getting elected to public office, as pastor of one of America’s most respected churches, Senator Reverend Warnock has always worked from the pulpit to improve health care access, protect the sacred right to vote, and strengthen justice for ordinary citizens. As a father of two young children, Senator Reverend Warnock often splits his time between taking care of his family in Georgia, moving around various parts of the state to hear directly from Georgians, and traveling to Washington to represent Georgians in the Senate. In addition, the Senator makes a point to travel home to Atlanta most weekends to preach from his home pulpit. While Senator Warnock is up for reelection for his full six-year term in November of 2022, one thing is for certain: Senator Reverend Warnock has distinguished himself as a moral leader in the Senate—working boldly to shape federal public policy in a way that helps Georgia families thrive, and to push the state in the right direction.

What Should You Do With a

Tax Refund? By Davaul Carter

A

re you expecting a tax refund this

• Add to the “cash” part of your portfolio.

• A tax refund is always nice to receive –

year? If so, what will you do with it? Of course, the answer largely depends on the size of your refund. For the 2020 tax year, the average refund was about $2,800, according to the Internal Revenue Service. But whether your refund this year will be about that size, smaller or larger, you can find ways to benefit from the money.

It’s generally a smart move to keep at least a portion of your overall investment portfolio in cash or cash equivalents because the presence of cash can help you in two ways. First, since its value won’t change, it can help cushion, at least to a degree, the effects of market volatility on your portfolio. And second, by having cash available, you’ll be ready to take advantage of attractive investment opportunities when they arise.

and it’s even better when you put the money to good use.

Here are some possibilities: • Contribute to your IRA. You’ve got until April 18 to fully fund your IRA for the 2021 tax year. But if you’ve already reached the maximum for 2021, you could use some or all of your refund for your 2022 contribution. Assuming you did get around $2,800, you’d be almost halfway to the $6,000 annual contribution limit. (If you’re 50 or older, you can contribute up to $7,000.) • Invest in a 529 plan. If you have children or grandchildren, you might want to invest your refund in a 529 education savings plan. A 529 plan’s earnings can grow federal income-tax-free, and withdrawals are federal income-tax-free, provided the money is used for qualified education expenses. If you invest in your own state’s plan, you might get a tax deduction or credit. A 529 plan can be used to pay for college, vocational training, and even some K-12 expenses in some states. Plus, if you name one child as a beneficiary, and that child’s educational journey does not require the funds from a 529 plan, you may change the beneficiary to another eligible family member of the original beneficiary.

• Boost your emergency fund. You could use your tax refund to start or supplement an emergency fund. Ideally, this fund should contain three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. (If you’re already retired, you might need this fund to cover a full year’s worth of expenses.) Without such a fund, you might be forced to dip into long-term investments to pay for costly housing or auto repairs, or large medical bills. • Reduce your debt load. It’s not always easy to minimize your debt load, even if you’re careful about your spending habits. But the lower your debt payments, the more money you’ll have available to invest for your future. So, you may want to consider using some of your tax refund to pay off some debts or at least reduce them, starting with those that carry the highest interest rates.

Steven and his team. Prior to joining the campaign, Steven was a Senior City Attorney for the City of Atlanta, where he served as an advisor to the Mayor, City Council, and Commissioners on real estate matters. He was also a member of the legal team that negotiated the Gulch development and participated in the acquisition, development, and expansion of numerous city parks and properties. Steven’s legal career also includes working as an attorney for Balch & Bingham, LLP, and Vice President and Senior Counsel at Fidelity National Title Group (“FNTG”), the largest title insurance company in the United States. At Balch, his primary areas of practice were title insurance litigation, product liability, and intellectual property. During this time, he co-authored several articles and publications, was a regular seminar presenter on title insurance principles, and served as the first Black president of the American Bar Association Title Insurance Litigation Committee. While practicing law, Steven also served as an adjunct faculty member at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. He taught torts and real estate law in the Paralegal Studies Certification Program and an undergraduate course in Trial Advocacy in conjunction with coaching the Samford University Mock Trial Team.

Steven Parker Deputy State Director U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff

Steven Parker’s professional career path has been marked with some significant achievements, from serving as a deputy to the Mayor of the nation’s second-largest city, working as an in-house counsel at a Fortune 500 company, to helping craft the winning strategy for the most historic U.S. Senate race in recent history. Steven now serves as the Deputy State Director for U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff. He serves as the Senator’s primary liaison to local and state officials and Georgia’s community, business, and faith stakeholders. Previously, Steven served as the Political Director for Ossoff’s Senate campaign, where he directed the campaign’s political outreach strategy in a race that had national significance; it determined the balance of power in the U.S. Senate, delivered Georgia to a democratic president and two democratic senators for the first time in over 20 years, sent Georgia’s first Jewish and Black Senators to Washington D.C., and is the most expensive Senate race in U.S. history. A critical component of the victory was the political engagement and relationship management executed by 14 | EMPOWER ATLANTA MAGAZINE

Before pursuing a legal career, Steven had an extensive career in government and community affairs, having worked as a Community Affairs Manager for Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan; Political Director of the California No On Prop 38 Campaign; Southern California Outreach Coordinator for the California Complete Count Campaign; Field Representative for California State Senator Herschel Rosenthal; Senate Fellow for the California State Senate Insurance Committee, and Community Specialist for the City of Raleigh, North Carolina. Steven earned his A.A. from the College of Sequoias, where he served as the first Black student body president and started as a defensive end on the state-ranked football team. He earned his B.S. degree from California State University Northridge, where he was elected student body president. Steven earned his J.D. degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law, where he participated in the trial team and won first place in a closing argument competition. Steven remains a member in good standing of both the State Bar of Georgia and Alabama State Bar. Q. What advice would you give someone interested in running for a political office? A. They must first get involved in a meaningful way on a local level, whether that is with the local county party, volunteering on campaigns, getting involved with their homeowner’s association, local service organizations, or showing up to city council or county commission meetings to get educated on how things work. I also advise people that they will have more credibility and be better prepared if they make the investment of involvement over a period of time. Along the way, they will learn about coalition building, raising money, governing, and public speaking, all of which are critical when preparing to run for office.

He serves on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest Hispanic Chambers in the nation. He is the GHCC’s Past Board Chair, recently led the Search Committee for the new CEO, and currently serves as Chair of the Governance Committee. Shammas is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, where he is also on the Development Committee. He also serves on the Caribbean American Cultural Arts Foundation Board and the Emory Board of Visitors.

Ivan Shammas is the new President and General Manager of Univision Atlanta & Univision Raleigh, NC. A bilingual and bicultural media executive experienced in leading premier Spanish-language television stations that provide awardwinning local news and programming to the expansive Latinx population. In his new role, Shammas will oversee and be responsible for all station activities, including local and national advertising sales, local news, marketing, and community affairs initiatives. Shammas has worked in Spanishlanguage media and within the Hispanic community for over 20 years, including eight years as the General Manager for Telemundo Atlanta. His experience in the Hispanic market, Hispanic media, and involvement in the community through various organizations have contributed to his growth and success. He believes in the importance of servant leadership and empowering by encouraging and fostering leadership in all.

In 2021, Shammas was honored for the second year in a row as one of Georgia’s 100 Most Influential People by Georgia Trend Magazine. Atlanta Magazine recognized him as one of their Atlanta 500 Most Powerful Leaders in 2021 and 2022. He is a 3-time recipient of the GHCC’s 50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia Award and was recognized in September 2021 as the newest inductee to their Hall of Fame. He recently was honored for his service on Dekalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox’s Use of Force Review Executive Committee tasked with providing recommendations on policy updates. He was selected by the NFL (National Football League) and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation to receive the 2019 Atlanta Falcons Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award. He is a 2019 Captain of Industry Award recipient from the Caribbean American Cultural Arts Foundation and a recipient of the 2018 Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Diversity & Inclusion Awards. Shammas graduated from Georgia State University, where he holds a BA in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations. Being of Venezuelan descent, he has been able to parlay his passion for the Spanish language and culture and be more active in community efforts aiming to make an impact where possible. Shammas grew up in Atlanta and currently resides in Brookhaven with his wife and three children. Q. What advice would you give someone interested in a television broadcasting career? A. Find out where your passion is. There are so many roles needed in running a television broadcasting station. Someone might have a passion for being on camera and reporting the news, editing stories, or in sales. So once you find your passion, it’s time to look for that opportunity to get your foot in the door. Build up your resume. Be open to starting at an entry level. Once you’re in, you are in. There will be opportunities to grow or move to other departments, which will allow you to become more valuable. It’s also important to network within the media industry. Yes, we all have to go through the standard protocol of formally applying for the job, but we can certainly go a lot further and jump that line in many cases when our résumé or name is delivered personally by someone internal within the organization. Join media clubs. Skills go a long way, but attitude and passion go even further. Find a champion within the media industry who can guide you, give you advice, and make the right introductions. Just go for it, and don’t give up until you get that first opportunity.

Steve Koonin Chief Executive Officer Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club named Steve Koonin its Chief Executive Officer in April 2014. Koonin oversees all business, financial and strategic operations of the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena and represents the owners as the head of the organization. Under Koonin’s leadership, the Hawks have transformed their brand, building, and presence in Atlanta. The recently renovated State Farm Arena has been ranked first in the NBA for “Overall Game Experience,” as well as being named by Pollstar as the “Best New Concert Venue in the United States”. Additionally, during Koonin’s tenure, the Atlanta Hawks have used innovation and strategic partnerships to “Build Bridges through Basketball” and reimagine the Atlanta Hawks Foundation, which has forged authentic and meaningful relationships with Atlanta communities and provided for the underserved in their greatest times of need. He provided the vision and has spearheaded the transformation of the award-winning State Farm Arena to become Georgia’s largest-ever polling location, becoming the first team in professional sports to convert their 16 | EMPOWER ATLANTA MAGAZINE

Koonin, a longtime entertainment and marketing veteran, joined the Hawks after spending the previous 14 years with Turner Entertainment Networks, most recently serving as the division’s president. Prior to his stint at Turner, Koonin helmed the marketing and worldwide advertising operations at The Coca-Cola Company, where he spent over a decade. A lifelong resident of Atlanta, Koonin serves as the Chairman of the Board for the Georgia Aquarium, on the boards of Rubicon Global and the Fox Theatre, and is an Executive Committee Member of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. WWE® recently elected Koonin to its Board of Directors. Among his many accomplishments, Koonin is a former Atlanta Sports Council Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, SportsBusiness Journal Sports Executive of the Year, and has been named one of: The 100 Most Influential Atlantans by Atlanta Business Chronicle and Atlanta Magazine’s Most Powerful People Shaping Atlanta.

Keith T. Parker President & CEO Goodwill of North Georgia

Keith T. Parker is president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Goodwill of North Georgia (GNG). One of the largest retail and nonprofit organizations in the southeast. Parker took the helm at GNG in October 2017. Prior to transitioning into his leadership role at GNG, Parker has served as CEO of the largest transit systems in several cities, including San Antonio, Charlotte, and most recently, Atlanta (MARTA). Throughout his career, Parker has received numerous awards and accolades as a transformational leader and transportation visionary. METRO Magazine named Parker as one of its 20 Most Influential People of the Decade. In 2016, Parker was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the National Infrastructure Advisory Council (NIAC). SPRING 2022 EXHIBITION AT THE HIGH MUSEUM OF ART EXPLORES THE ELUSIVE NATURE OF LOVE AND THE WAYS IT IS EXPRESSED IN CONTEMPORARY ART Featuring nearly 70 works spanning the past three decades by a diverse and multigenerational group of artists “What Is Left Unspoken, Love” March 25-August 14, 2022

T

he High Museum of Art will present a thematic exhibition featuring contemporary artworks from the early 1990s through the present that examine the different ways that one of the most powerful forces of life — love — is understood, expressed, or perhaps left unspoken. On view March 25-August 14, 2022, “What Is Left Unspoken, Love” juxtaposes iconic works that represent watershed moments in the history of contemporary art, such as Felix GonzalezTorres’s “‘Untitled’ (Perfect Lovers)” (19871990), with art of the past decade, including six works created especially for the exhibition, such as “Our Love Was Deeply Purple” (2021) by Alanna Fields. The exhibition will consider love as a profound subject of exploration from time immemorial that is nonetheless still relevant to the contingencies of 21stcentury life. “Recognizing that division and separation are prevalent in our current moment, it is only fitting to mount an exhibition focused on love: a universal theme that ultimately underscores what binds and strengthens us all,” said Rand Suffolk, the High’s Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr., director. “Showcasing perspectives of artists from the past three decades, we hope that ‘What Is Left Unspoken, Love’ will remind audiences of the common thread that brings us together as families, friends, and as a community.” Works in the exhibition explore concepts of love from the most intimate of relationships between two people, through the ties that bind family and friends, to social movements that promote the worth and well-being of community. At its most epic, “What Is Left Unspoken, Love” deals with the family of humankind and its connection with the

natural world, as well as the pursuit of wisdom or love of knowledge while promoting the notion that love is worth analyzing at this moment, particularly as an agent of change and a force for good. “Where I grew up, love is an embarrassing feeling that is often left as an understanding but not given a voice,” said the High’s Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Michael Rooks. “For many people, to say ‘I love you’ can be debilitating, so, a goal of the exhibition is to consider how love might be an empowering experience rather than an exercise in futility, as in the narrative arc of Carrie Mae Weems’ ‘The Kitchen Table Series’; something tangible rather than an illusion, like the functional black-glazed earthenware of Kahlil Robert Irving; or a moral virtue rather than an emotional weakness, as demonstrated in Patty Chang’s ‘Que Sera Sera/Invocations’.” “What Is Left Unspoken, Love” will include nearly 70 works, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, media art, and installation, by more than 35 diverse and multigenerational artists based in North America, Europe, and Asia. In the midst of teaching, Troy led Operations Crossroads as Program Director, a summer youth program designed for students at the secondary level of education. The purpose of the program is to introduce students to financial literacy through culturally responsive education while providing them with opportunities to gain work experience through summer internships in career fields of their choice. McKay was the point person in the negotiation, development, and building of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which began in earnest in 2008. Working closely with Blank, the city of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, McKay helped to secure approval and financing for Mercedes-Benz Stadium and created a true public-private partnership. The club broke ground on Mercedes-Benz Stadium on May 19, 2014, and it was completed in August of 2017 and serves as the home of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United. He is the only executive to have led two successful stadium negotiations (Atlanta and Tampa Bay). In April of 2014, McKay was named President of AMB Sports & Entertainment (AMBSE), which oversees the Falcons, Atlanta United, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Falcons President and CEO Rich McKay has been a fixture in the National Football League for more than 30 years. One of the League’s most influential executives, McKay joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2004. During McKay’s tenure, the Falcons have been to the playoffs seven times, been to three NFC Championship games, and participated in Super Bowl LI. McKay was hired by Owner and Chairman Arthur M. Blank in 2004 and served his first four years as the team’s general manager. He was promoted to president and chief executive officer in 2011. That same year, national columnist and creator of Monday Morning Quarterback (MMQB), Peter King, named McKay number 10 out of the 100 most influential people in the NFL. In 2019, The Athletic put McKay in The NFL’s 100 most influential business people of all time. McKay played a central role in the development, opening, and operation of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in addition to his Falcons duties. McKay has served as a member of the NFL’s Competition Committee since 1994, which is longer than any member has ever served since the committee’s inception in 1968. He has led the committee as co-chairman (1998-2011) or chairman (2011-current) since 1998. The nine-member committee is comprised of NFL head coaches and League executives who study the game and recommend rule changes and modifications to ensure player safety while promoting competitiveness. The Competition Committee has recommended and passed over fifty (50) player safety rules changes since 2002. In addition to his commitment to advancing the game, McKay has been involved in the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements with the National Football League Players Association and was highly involved in the negotiations that led to the ten-year collective bargaining agreement signed in 2011 and the newest tenyear agreement that was executed this past March. McKay earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1981 from Princeton University, graduated from Stetson’s College of Law in 1984, clerked for two years for Tampa’s U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges, and was inducted into the Stetson Law’s Hall of Fame on November 2014. McKay worked at the Tampa law firm of Hill, Ward, and Henderson, P.A., from 1986-1992, where he served as General Counsel for the Buccaneers. Born March 16, 1959, in Eugene, Oregon, McKay grew up in Los Angeles and Tampa, graduating from Tampa’s Jesuit High School. McKay and his wife, Terrin, have two sons; Hunter, a 2012 graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama who is now employed in the Sports Information Office at Kennesaw State University and John, a 2015 graduate of the University of Southern California is a pro scout with the Los Angeles Rams.

We strive to bring a championship team both on and off the field to our fans and to the city of Atlanta. Q. Is there any advice you could provide someone in a new leadership position on how to lead through change? A. In order to lead through change, be sure to maintain the process and work habits that got you to where you are in the first place. Before you act, study what is taking place from multiple sources. Do your best to understand the root of the issue. Trust your team and seek their input and if their expertise does not apply, seek outside help. Often the timing of change is out of your control, so you must be cognizant of the speed that you need to act. Don’t be afraid to act but also, don’t be afraid to take a pause and not rush to judgment. Finally, be transparent with your team and communicate as often as you can and honestly.

CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE?

C

hronic kidney disease (CKD) means your kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood the way they should. The disease is called “chronic” because the damage to your kidneys happens slowly over a long period of time. This damage can cause waste to build up in your body. CKD can also cause other health problems. The kidneys’ main job is to filter extra water and wastes out of your blood to make urine. To keep your body working properly, the kidneys balance the salts and minerals—such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium—that circulate in the blood. Your kidneys also make hormones that help control blood pressure, make red blood cells, and keep your bones strong. Kidney disease can often worsen over time and may lead to kidney failure. If your kidneys fail, you will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain your health. The sooner you know you have kidney disease, the sooner you can make changes to protect your kidneys. Who is more likely to develop CKD? You are at risk for kidney disease if you have: • Diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of CKD. High blood glucose, also called blood sugar, from diabetes can damage the blood vessels in your kidneys. • High blood pressure. High blood pressure is the second leading cause of CKD. Like high blood glucose, high blood pressure also can damage the blood vessels in your kidneys. • Heart disease. Research shows a link between kidney disease and heart disease. People with heart disease are at higher risk for kidney disease, and people with kidney disease are at higher risk for heart disease. Researchers are working to better understand the relationship between kidney disease and heart disease.

• Family history of kidney failure. If your mother, father, sister, or brother has kidney failure, you are at risk for CKD. Kidney disease tends to run in families. If you have kidney disease, encourage family members to get tested. What are the symptoms of CKD? Early CKD may not have any symptoms You may wonder how you can have CKD and feel fine. Our kidneys have a greater capacity to do their job than is needed to keep us healthy. For example, you can donate one kidney and remain healthy. You can also have kidney damage without any symptoms because, despite the damage, your kidneys are still doing enough work to keep you feeling well. For many people, the only way to know if you have kidney disease is to get your kidneys checked with blood and urine tests. As kidney disease gets worse, a person may have swelling, called edema. Edema happens when the kidneys can’t get rid of extra fluid and salt. Edema can occur in the legs, feet, or ankles and less often in the hands or face. Symptoms of advanced CKD • Chest Pain • Dry Skin • Itching or Numbness • Feeling Tired • Headaches • Increased or Decreased Urination • Loss of Appetite • Muscle Cramps

• Nausea • Shortness of Breath • Sleep Problems • Trouble Concentrating • Vomiting • Weight Loss People with CKD can also develop anemia, bone disease, and malnutrition. Managing Chronic Kidney Disease If you have chronic kidney disease (CKD), you can take steps to protect your kidneys from more damage. The sooner you know you have kidney disease, the better. The steps you take to protect your kidneys from damage also may help prevent heart disease—and improve your health overall. Making these changes when you have no symptoms may be hard, but it’s worthwhile. Ten ways to manage kidney disease: • Control your blood pressure. • Meet your blood glucose goal if you have diabetes • Work with your health care team to monitor your kidney health. • Take medicines as prescribed. • Work with a dietitian to develop a meal plan. • Make physical activity part of your routine. • Aim for a healthy weight. • Get enough sleep. • Stop smoking. • Find healthy ways to cope with stress and depression. Be careful about the over-the-counter medicines you take. If you take OTC or prescription medicines for headaches, pain, fever, or colds, you may be taking nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs include commonly used pain relievers and cold medicines that can damage your kidneys and lead to acute kidney injury, especially in those with kidney disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Ibuprofen and naproxen are NSAIDs. NSAIDs are sold under many different brand names, so ask your pharmacist or health care provider if the medicines you take are safe to use.

Make Healthy Food Choices Choose foods that are healthy for your heart and your entire body: fresh fruits, fresh or frozen vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Eat healthy meals, and cut back on salt and added sugars. Aim for less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day. Try to have less than 10 percent of your daily calories come from added sugars. Tips for making healthy food choices • Cook with a mix of spices instead of salt. • Choose veggie toppings such as spinach, broccoli, and peppers for your pizza.

• Serve foods without any gravy or added fats. • Try to choose foods with little or no added sugar. Gradually work your way down from whole milk to 2 percent milk until you’re drinking and cooking with fatfree (skim) or low-fat milk and milk products. • Eat foods made from whole grains—such as whole wheat, brown rice, oats, and whole-grain corn—every day. Use whole-grain bread for toast and sandwiches; substitute brown rice for white rice for home-cooked meals and when dining out. • Read food labels. Choose foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars. • Slow down at snack time. Eating a bag of low-fat popcorn takes longer than eating a slice of cake. Peel and eat an orange instead of drinking orange juice. • Try keeping a written record of what you eat for a week. It can help you see when you tend to overeat or eat foods high in fat or calories. Research has shown that the DASH eating plan may help you lower your blood pressure. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, you may want to locate and work with a dietitian to create a meal plan that meets your needs. Work With Your Health Care Team To Monitor Your Kidney Health. Your primary care provider (PCP)—doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant—is the person you see for routine medical visits. Your PCP may monitor your kidney health and help you manage your diabetes and high blood pressure. A PCP can also prescribe medicines and may refer you to specialists. Your PCP may refer you to a nephrologist if you have a complicated case of kidney disease, your kidney disease is quickly getting worse, or your kidney disease is advanced. Seeking government support isn’t usually first on a business to-do list; however, several government entities provide resources and support to thousands of entrepreneurs annually. Here is a curated list of government business resources that assist small businesses with critical tools for long-term success: 1. Federal Resources • Small Business Administration www.sba.gov The Small Business Administration (SBA) is the only cabinet-level federal agency fully dedicated to small business. SBA provides a variety of services ranging from free business counseling to access to capital. • USDA Rural Development Programs https://www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/business-programs Businesses that impact rural areas have access to many resources provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Rural Development programs. USDA programs help to provide capital, equipment, space, job training, and entrepreneurial skills that can help to start and/or grow a business. The programs work through partnerships with public and private community-based organizations and financial institutions to provide financial assistance, business development, and technical assistance to rural businesses. • Export-Import Bank of the United States https://www.exim.gov/ The Export-Import Bank (EXIM) is an independent federal agency that fills gaps in private export finance. EXIM provides trade financing solutions – including export credit insurance, working capital guarantees, and guarantees of commercial loans to foreign buyers – to empower exporters of U.S. goods and services. • U.S. Department of Commerce https://www.commerce.gov/work-with-us/services-for-businesses Known as “America’s Data Agency,” the U.S. Department of Commerce provides the data necessary to support commerce. By virtue of accumulating the league’s highest two-year point total, Atlanta United qualified for the Concacaf Champions League. In 2019 under head coach Frank de Boer, Atlanta won the U.S. Open Cup and became the first MLS club to win Campeones Cup by defeating Mexican champions Club America. The club again qualified for Concacaf Champions League play in 2020. Atlanta United and Eales were recognized with multiple awards in 2019. The club was named Sports Team of the Year at the Sports Business Awards, while Mercedes-Benz Stadium was named Best Facility. At the World Football Summit, Eales was named Executive of the Year, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium won Best Venue. It was the first time a club had won multiple categories and the first time an MLS team had been recognized at the ceremony.

Darren Eales President Atlanta United

Atlanta United announced the appointment of Darren Eales as President on Sept. 10, 2014. He joined the club several months later, following a transition period with world-renowned English Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, where he served as Executive Director. Since joining Atlanta, Eales has twice been named the Doug Hamilton MLS Executive of the Year. As the first President of Atlanta United, Eales led the club in its record-breaking 2017 inaugural campaign, which is widely considered one of the most accomplished seasons in MLS history, both on and off the field. He also led its on-field progression, hiring integral members to join the technical staff. Under this leadership, Atlanta United became the first expansion team to qualify for MLS Cup Playoffs since 2009 and just the second since 1998. On the pitch, Atlanta United became the earliest expansion team to win MLS Cup since 1998. The club finished the 2018 regular season with 69 points, secondmost in MLS history, and recorded 34 | EMPOWER ATLANTA MAGAZINE

British-born Eales was raised by his father as a Chesterfield FC fan and was immersed in soccer all his life. After playing in the Academy at Cambridge United F.C. in England, he moved to the U.S. on a soccer scholarship playing for West Virginia University and Brown University, where he was named Ivy League Player of the Year and NSCAA All-America. Following his university play, Eales remained in the U.S., playing for the Hampton Roads Mariners and Hershey Wildcats in the USISL and the New York Centaurs in the A-League. When injuries cut short his professional playing career, Eales returned to England and earned an M.A. in Law at Cambridge University. In 2000 he qualified as a barrister specializing in sports law and spent six years practicing law at 2 Temple Gardens Chambers in London, where he is still a door tenant. Eales served as in-house legal counsel, director, and club secretary at West Bromwich Albion Football Club before joining Tottenham in 2010, where he touched on all major aspects of soccer operations. He helped to negotiate and execute player transfers, including playing a key role in the 2013 world record transfer fee sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. During his four-year tenure with Spurs, the team qualified for European competition every season, reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League in 2011, and reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League in 2013. Eales lives in Atlanta with his wife Faith and their two sons, Edmund and James.

During his tenure, Donald also launched key transparency and diversity initiatives highlighted by a pilot body camera program, a $15 an hour minimum wage for city employees, a countywide non-discrimination ordinance, and delivery of the first comprehensive blight ordinance in Augusta’s history. Donald also has the distinction of serving as the first City Manager for Georgia’s fifth-largest city, the City of South Fulton. Under Donald’s leadership, South Fulton eliminated a $25 million deficit, doubled revenues, established the first positive fund balance (FY2021 $45 million) in the city’s history, streamlined service delivery, and set the strategic path for the city through robust land use, transportation, quality of life and the city’s first strategic plan.

Regarded as a national leader in public administration, Odie Donald II serves as Chief of Staff to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. As Chief of Staff, Donald serves as the chief advisor to the chief executive, supporting the delivery of services in Georgia’s largest city. Prior to joining the Dickens administration, Donald served as Administrator for the consolidated government of Augusta – Richmond County. As Administrator, Odie oversaw the day-to-day operations for the consolidated government of Georgia’s second-largest city with a population of more than 205,000, leading approximately 3,000 budgeted employees, a more than $15 billion tax digest, while administering a $1 billion operating and capital improvements budget. Under Donald’s leadership, Augusta improved bond ratings at the Augusta Municipal Airport (to BBB), received the certificate of excellence for financial reporting (GFOA) and administered more than $100 million allocated through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) aimed at mitigating the impacts of the global

Tenderfoot TV’s popular podcast “To Live and Die in LA” has given authorities evidence that there was more than one person involved in the death of aspiring Hollywood actress Adea Shabani, and was named Associated Press’s Top Podcast of 2019. California native Donald Albright is an entrepreneur, producer, and co-founder of Atlanta-based content creation company Tenderfoot TV. He has spent the last 20 years working on various music and entertainment projects with notable artists, including Jay-Z, OutKast, Usher, DJ Khaled, and many more. In 2016, Albright joined friend and music video director Payne Lindsey to launch Tenderfoot TV, a content creation company that works with fellow creators to bring stories to life through an array of entertainment media - including podcasts, live shows, television, film, and other digital platforms. As reported by the Washington Post back in 2021, there has been nearly $50 billion dollars committed by America’s 50 biggest public companies to address racial inequality as a result of George Floyd’s murder, including Bank of America’s $1.25 billion dollar commitment. Not only is there an uptick in monetary contributions, but companies are leaning in more, providing human capital to organizations and ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table. For example, Connie Chung Joe, CEO of Asian Americans Advancing Justice in Los Angeles, joined Bank of America’s National Community Advisory Council to help address business practices and products. Q. How do you get others to accept your ideas? A. I believe in a collective effort, and it’s important that every member of our team sincerely feel like contributors. The goal is to paint the picture showing the what, who, and the why. I then asked my personnel if they were the customer, spending their hard-earned money, would this new idea, concept, or process make them happy that they chose Court Dreams. Arthur M. Fix is the Chief Operating Officer of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, where he has led operations and spearheaded construction projects since joining the Garden in 2012. Prior to that, Fix served as Vice President for Operations for Silverman Construction Management Program, where he was responsible for the design, construction, and management of numerous public and private projects. Fix received Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Architecture degrees from Auburn University and has nearly 38 years of experience as an architect, general contractor, and real estate developer. While many elements of the Garden envisioned had been built by the time he joined the Garden, the opportunity to join with such a dynamic institution was serendipity for Fix, and many of the construction programs he has led while at the Garden allowed him to fulfill his architectural thesis vision. As part of the Garden team, Fix worked on the design and construction of all recent projects, including Gardens in Storza Woods, renovation to the Children’s Garden, Longleaf restaurant, Skyline Garden, conservatory renovations, Conservation and Training Center, and Atlanta Botanical Garden satellite extension in Gainesville. In addition, he oversees operational aspects, including Special Events and Exhibits, which brings seasonal art exhibitions to the Garden, as well as the popular Garden Lights, Holiday Lights.

A native of Birmingham, AL, after his graduation from Auburn, Fix received an offer to join Cooper Carry Architects and moved to Atlanta in 1984. While he thoroughly enjoyed his work at Cooper Carry, there was significant travel involved. In addition, Fix learned that there were many architects who were excellent designers but lacked knowledge of what it actually took to build a building. So after 15 years of practicing architecture, Fix pursued becoming a licensed contractor so he would have the full knowledge of not only how to design a building but also how to put a building together. His first projects as a contractor were with General Electric Power Systems, where he collaborated with Cousins Properties for the new GE headquarters, located in Marietta, GA. The work at GE was rewarding and challenging as it taught him that for each project, you could always do the next project better in terms of lowering cost or reducing the construction schedule while maintaining overall quality to deliver each project on time and within budget. After 9/11, Fix left construction and worked in real estate development before joining Silverman Construction Program Management as Vice President, where he worked with Arnie Silverman, who previously owned Winter Construction. Fix now lives in Milton, GA, where he has acreage with a hobby farm and enjoys spending his free time at a home in Fairhope, AL.

Q. What do you believe are some qualities that make a great leader? A. I believe that a few qualities of a good leader should include remaining flexible and open to new opinions and or alternate approaches, with a keen ability to quickly identify potential problems and expertise to seek resolution in a timely manner. Additionally, a good leader must have a clear passion for their work, with a vision to build a great team and then allow the team to execute their responsibilities with appropriate guidance and respect.

at GPTC in 2017, Dr. Clark has led GPTC’s Economic Development Division to record growth of over 400 companies served through customized contract training. He also secured more than $400,000 in philanthropic gifts from business and industry to support the advancement of the institution’s credit and non-credit programs in the areas of advanced manufacturing and STEM-related programs. A former Vice President and CEO at Harrisburg Area Community College’s (HACC) Harrisburg Campus, Dr. Clark was responsible for providing educational experiences to more than 8,000 students in the Harrisburg metropolitan area. His responsibilities included leading full-time and part-time faculty and staff while managing a $37 million budget. He also developed and established campusplanning strategies resulting in; a master plan for building and maintenance; the renovation of the Cooper Student Center; increased campus scholarships with an $11 million campaign; facilitated the alumni relations strategic planning, and led efforts to increase enrollment and outreach with the neighboring counties. Dr. Clark has been successful in writing, managing, and evaluating various state and federal grant programs such as Title III, Student Support Services, and Upward Bound. In addition, he coordinated efforts for grant programs to assist college and pre-college programs and strengthen outreach efforts to the local community. One such initiative resulted in Frederick Community College being awarded a $450,000 U.S. Department of Education College Access grant to support retention and completion efforts of firstgeneration students.

Clark is a results-orientated leader who has committed his career to advancing the mission of community and technical colleges as a gateway to opportunity for both students and business and industry. I think the best way leaders can support other leaders is through three distinctive ways: • Being available and ready to listen. Leaders oftentimes need someone to serve as a confidential sounding board. In many instances, leaders managing their daily activities and decisions need someone to share ideas and perspectives that will allow their concerns or excitement to be expressed and/or challenged in a safe space. • Setting a positive example through your own actions with others. Leaders must understand that how you support and interact with others may influence how your colleagues will interact with you as a leader. • Be willing to allow others to stand on your shoulders. Leaders have to be willing and ready to allow others to grow. Utilizing your position or platform to support and grow others can help both an emerging or established leader along with the organization or department they are managing. Being selfless and committed to paying it forward can have an everlasting impact on how leaders at all levels maintain a culture that fosters support.

To support these objectives, the Museum has reduced admission fees, greatly diversified its exhibition schedule, added more than 2,700 objects to the collection, worked collaboratively with nearly 30 community partners annually, and developed a variety of new programming to serve its increasingly diverse, multi-generational audience. In 2018, Suffolk led a sweeping reinstallation of the Museum’s collection galleries. Prior to joining the High, Suffolk served as director of Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Okla., where he designed and implemented a comprehensive plan that aligned the institution’s programming with the interests of Tulsa residents. This led to a reinstallation of the museum’s permanent collection galleries, increases in membership and attendance, and a dramatic change in visitor demographics, including five consecutive years with minority participation over 40 percent of total attendance. The success of this institutional strategy and program was nationally recognized in a 2013 study led by

independent researchers Anne Bergeron and Beth Tuttle in partnership with the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), in which Philbrook was highlighted as one of six national models of community engagement. He also was instrumental in leading the development and opening of Philbrook Downtown, a 30,000-square-foot satellite facility that opened in 2013. During his tenure, Philbrook acquired nearly 7,000 works of art, representing 42 percent of the Museum’s permanent collection. From 1999 through 2007, Suffolk was the director of The Hyde Collection Art Museum in Glens Falls, N.Y. His focus at the institution included building constituency, overseeing a museum expansion, and guiding the award-winning restoration of the historic Hyde House. Suffolk has curated more than 25 exhibitions and has participated as a juror, panel member, or guest lecturer for a variety of art-related organizations and programs. He holds a Master’s degree in art history from Bryn Mawr College, a Master’s degree in higher education administration from Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College.

ECHL’s first Hispanic chief executive, James continues to blaze a trail for the league and the sport of hockey. Before joining Atlanta, he spent a decade on the highest level of minor league baseball, working at the Triple-A level for the Fresno Grizzlies. During his stretch with the Grizzlies, they were affiliated with both the San Francisco Giants and the Houston Astros organizations. James earned some hardware for his hard work with four championship rings. He won two World Series Rings with San Francisco, one with Houston, as well as a Pacific Coast League championship with Fresno. While with Fresno, he served as the team’s Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Revenue. James Lindsay is a highly successful Miamibased entrepreneur and the Founder & CEO of Rap Snacks. By partnering with some of the rap game’s most recognizable names, such as Cardi B, Migos, Lil Boosie, Rick Ross, Master P, and Romeo, the brand has become one of the most visible hip-hop geared snack products over the last few decades. Rap Snacks celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2022. A Philadelphia native, James Lindsay graduated f rom Cheyney University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. He honed his marketing skills while serving as a manager in the consumer products industry for Johnson Products, an ethnic hair care company, and Warner-Lambert. James leveraged his background in the hair products business, tweaked and improved upon it, and applied it to the packaged food industry. These experiences, and his desire to own a business, empowered him to start Rap Snacks, Inc. in 1994, a snack foods company that featured hip-hop artists on the brand—the first of its kind in the U.S. The success of Rap Snacks allowed Lindsay to solidify a comarketing agreement with Universal Records to advertise Universal’s Artists on all Rap Snacks bags. Eventually, the company grew into a $5 million dollar business selling mostly twenty-five cent bags of chips. In 2001, Lindsay expanded his product line by purchasing a snack foods brand called “Mr. G” snack foods. s now a smart time to purchase in today’s real estate market? This is a question I receive daily, and the answer is “yes, outstanding yes!” Homebuyers, specifically first-time home buyers, tend to be shy of the real estate market but don’t need to be, and let me tell you why. The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) announced the new conforming loan limits for 2022. Conventional loan limits have been increased almost $100K from $548,250 in 2021 to $647,200 for 2022. Increasing conforming loan limits enables homebuyers to seek loan amounts that coincide with the increasing market prices. Raising the loan limits represents strength in the real estate market. Meaning housing prices are not intended to drop. Owning real estate is a key way to build financial freedom. Every mortgage payment chips away at the mortgage debt owed and increases equity accrued in the property. When homeowners decide to sell property, they reap profits versus renting and never building equity.

A common misconception surrounding the current real estate market is “inflated” housing prices making the present time a poor time to invest in real estate. This is a misconception of the housing market because historically, low-interest rates offset the higher home prices. For example, if someone were purchasing a home for $350,000 at a 2.5% interest rate versus purchasing a home at $300,000 with a 4.5% interest rate, the mortgage payments on the higher-priced home would be cheaper by approximately $50,000 throughout the life of the loan. In other words, waiting for home prices to drop to purchase a home may end up being an expensive mistake if interest rates continue to increase.

Caribbean resorts still lead the way The Caribbean is still the king of all travel destinations. All-in-one resorts in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Aruba are flooded with tourists f rom the U.S. and other nations where travel was limited in the past few years. Mexico is also doing well, and they have some of the lowest prices around. It doesn’t hurt that most of these are a short flight away.
