A GUIDE TO PRONOUNS WHAT ARE PRONOUNS?
Gender pronouns are the words used in place of a person's name. They are used in everyday speech and writing and often imply the gender of that person. For those individuals who do not identify as either male or female, words like 'he' and 'she' can leave them feeling isolated and uncomfortable identifying exclusively with either term.
WHY ARE PRONOUNS IMPORTANT? You can't always know what a person's preferred pronouns are. Asking and correctly using someone's pronouns is one of the most basic ways to show consideration and respect for their gender identity. Mistaking or assuming a person's pronouns can have a negative consequence on their self-confidence, mental health and can make them feel stigmatized. If you are unsure of a person's pronouns, don't be afraid to politely and privately ask that person what pronoun they would prefer. Including pronouns on your corporate email signature is a good way to let others know what pronouns you prefer to be addressed by. It's a good way to help minimise misgendering and is also a way for staff to show their support for their LGBTQIA+ colleagues. When introducing yourself in meetings, consider stating your preferred pronouns. It will enable others to know how to address you and can help others feel included and respected. If someone takes the time to let you know their pronouns, use them and respect them. If you have difficulty saying someone's pronouns, take the time to practice.
