ilo Yiannopoulos, tech editor of the conservative website Breitbart, drew a crowd of over 250 at White Hall April 13. Some went to hear his perspectives, others to protest. Emory wasn’t originally a planned visit on his “Dangerous Faggot” tour, but in the aftermath of the Trump chalkings and the subsequent protests three weeks ago, Emory College Republicans and Emory Young Americans for Liberty invited Yiannopoulos to speak.

Yiannopoulos has made a name for himself as a self-described advocate for freedom of speech. To some, his speech is a critical and powerful political commentary. To others, it is hate-speech. About twenty minutes before his talk started, the room had surpassed its maximum seating capacity of 120 people. By the time Yiannopoulos began speaking, around 250 total had gathered in White Hall . Some of those who could not enter the lecture hall attempted to listen from the hallway or to watch from an adjacent room, where the talk was projected onscreen.

Outside the building, protesters dressed in black carried signs expressing their concern for the values that Yiannopoulos’ espoused.

The signs displayed phrases including, “Milo doesn’t speak for us,” “Emory No Place for Hate” and “Emory is nothing without women + POC [people of color].”

The protesters did not speak directly to Yiannopoulos at any point.

“We are encouraging people to not engage with [Yiannopoulos], or at least to not listen to

him — to not engage passively,” said College junior Anais Hussung, who protested at the event.

“His standard critiques of [politically correct (PC)] culture [and his] arguments that college students are too sensitive ... are all just used to delegitimize the grievances of oppressed peoples.”

This sort of opposition is not new to Yiannopoulos, who has caused consistent controversy since he entered the public eye in 2014 with his commentary on “Gamergate.”

Before the talk, members of Emory College Republicans handed out signs with messages such as “Socialism Sucks” to the large crowd in the lobby.

Several members of the crowd wore hats bearing Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

Jake Maddineni, College junior and incoming president of Emory College Republicans, Nicholas Vidger, College freshman and freshman representative for Emory College Republicans and Alex Reibman, College senior and president of the Young Americans for Liberty, addressed the crowd before Yiannopoulos spoke. Maddineni asserted that “the protesters out there, they don’t represent Emory as a whole,” causing the audience to break into applause.

Yiannopoulos’ speech addressed a number of topics, including “bullying tactics of the political left” and “PC culture.” He made comments critical of women, racial minorities and members of the LGBT community throughout his talk.

Yiannopoulos discussed his perception of the thought process of many liberals, stating that personal attacks against dissident speakers and “feelings,” have replaced logical arguments and evidence in debate. He said that he supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for that reason, adding that “[Trump] wants to fix

the freedom of speech problem in this country, and we can’t fix anything else until we fix speech.”

Yiannopoulos also criticized the left’s “bullying” tactics, which he describes as an effort to discredit dissenters by declaring that they are “racist, sexist or offensive” instead of debating the ideas they present.

While over-sensitivity among younger generations is a great concern, the failure of democracy itself presents a larger problem, Yiannopoulos said.

“Democracy doesn’t really work right now,” he said. “The press lies to us; both conservative and liberal media lie to us. Democracy doesn’t work when people can’t make informed decisions — and that can’t happen when the media is lying to us every day.”

He also addressed single-mindedness on college campuses and at Trump rallies, mentioning that anti-Trump activists consistently seem to be forced out of rallies and attacked by Trump supporters.

“The difference between a political rally and a college campus is that people going to a political rally already agree with what the candidate is saying,” Yiannopoulos said. “Why are you there if you don’t support Trump? A college campus is the forum for the discussion and the debate of ideas. A political rally is not.”

While Yiannopoulos said he does not believe that effective discourse is possible in the media given its current state, he also said that he believes that college campuses are a place where discourse could occur in the future. While he does not believe that these conversations could happen today, Yiannopoulos said that he hopes

his talks and visits to colleges to prove helpful in facilitating future discussions.

The British activist became interested in visiting Emory after the protests that followed the Trump chalkings, according to Adam Woodward, an Emory Law School student and the treasurer of the school’s Federalist Society.

“Milo reached out to Emory as a whole via Twitter following the Trump chalkings a few weeks ago,” Woodward said. “While we [the Federalist Society] couldn’t host him, as he doesn’t exactly mesh with our mission, I passed it along to the Young Americans for Liberty and the Emory College Republicans, and they invited him.”

After the talk, protesters outside White Hall chanted, “This is what democracy looks like.”

“It is absolutely what democracy looks like, it’s the only correct thing they say — [the protesters] absolutely have a right to protest,” Yiannopoulos said in an interview with the Wheel. “However, what they don’t do very well is allowing the other person to be heard, too. They’re all about democracy and freedom and freedom of speech for themselves, but they don’t much like diversity of opinion.”

His opponents however, argue that his speech is bigoted.

“He’s absolutely promoted violent, hateful speech and consistently uses slurs,” Hussung said.

Yiannopoulos’ response is that his language has a purpose.

“Maybe I’m demonstrating my point — about how facile it is, you know, and how easy it is and how ultimately meaningless and unproductive [insulting people] is, you know,” he told the

Wheel. “Sometimes I do that. Sometimes I precisely do that.”

“He wants to show people that the best way to debate issues is to engage and then counter, rather than call for censorship,” said Woodward.

Others were hesitant to endorse Yiannopoulos’ visit. College senior Amelia Sims, the outgoing president of Emory College Republicans, said she doesn’t want her name associated with bringing Yiannopoulos here. She went as far as to say that she wants to “wash her hands of this [Yiannopoulos’] event”, claiming that the way he expresses himself is offensive and rude, not rational.

“The purpose of freedom of speech is to support the free exchange of ideas,” Sims said before the talk. “Just because you have the right to say something offensive doesn’t mean that you should.”

After leaving White Hall, Yiannopoulos brandished a bag of chalk, passed out pieces to the crowd and made his way to Asbury Circle with a swarm of about 50 at his heels. He then proceeded to chalk “Dangerous Faggot xox,” on the ground, and was met with cheers and applause.

Yiannopoulos’ chalking inspired some of those who followed him from White Hall to begin writing their own messages on the ground, varying from “Trump forever legal” to “Helicopter rides.” As he left Emory, people continued to chalk messages on the Asbury pavement in what has become a now familiar scene on campus.

NEWS Emory WaterHub Wins U.S. Water Prize Lauren Balotin | Staff Writer

he United States Water Alliance recently awarded one of three 2016 U.S. Water Prizes to Emory’s WaterHub, an on-campus water recycling facility that cleanses low-quality wastewater, according to Vice President for Campus Services at Emory Matthew Early.

Recipients of the annual U.S. Water Prize Award are considered leaders in sustainable water resource management, according to the U.S. Water Alliance’s website. Installed in January 2015 and in operation since February 2015, the WaterHub collects wastewater from sewers and campus buildings and recycles it into non-potable water.

Sustainable Water and McKim & Creed, two firms with which Emory partnered to finance and engineer the WaterHub, nominated Emory for the prize, according to an April 2016 University press release. District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) and Dow Water & Process Solutions also received awards for their Walter F. Bailey Bioenergy Facility and Minimal Liquid Discharge technology, respectively.

The facility, which can recycle up to 400,000 gallons of water each day — equivalent to almost 40 percent of Emory’s total campus water needs — uses biomimicry technology and is “the first system of its kind to be installed in the United States,” according to the Division of Campus Service’s website. The recycled water is used to heat and cool buildings throughout campus and flush toilets in Raoul Hall.

The WaterHub will save millions of dollars in water utility costs for Emory over a 20-year period, according to the website.

“You cannot look anywhere else and find this kind of project,” Early said. “There’s nothing like [the WaterHub] anywhere else in the nation.

Not one.”

The WaterHub-cleansed water will soon be used in adjacent residence halls, including Longstreet-Means and Hamilton Holmes, according to Early. Emory also plans to use the WaterHub to irrigate its baseball fields.

Early said that he is glad that Emory received recognition for its sustainability efforts and is hopeful that Emory can spread this system to other schools and companies.

According to Early, since the beginning of the WaterHub’s operation, Emory has worked to spread information regarding the facility’s technology. The facility has received over 100 visits from various universities and companies.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy and a representative from Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure who wanted to assess whether a similar facility might be a good solution for water treatment in Rwanda have visited the WaterHub Emory, according to Director of Sustainability Initiatives at Emory Ciannat Howett.

McCarthy described the WaterHub project as “important for the EPA” and noted that it may represent an “alternative that the agricultural community would readily embrace,” according to a February 2015 University press release.

Students, too, can study the facility firsthand through research opportunities and tours, according to Early, who described the WaterHub as a “living laboratory.” Students from the Rollins School of Public Health, for instance, use the facility to research sanitation and water treatment.

“We have given hundreds of tours to elementary school students, EPA administrators and corporate leaders,” Howett said. “That is exactly the kind of community outreach role that a university should be playing.”

Early added that the facility itself represents the importance of research and education. “[Emory is] a research institution where we find things across the spectrum that would improve humanity,” he said. “This is just another way to show nationally and globally that [we can find alternatives].”

Howett added that spreading this technology is important, noting that the United Nations expects global water demand to exceed supply by 40 percent in the year 2030. She said she hopes that similar water treatment systems will be more common in the future.

“Not only is the WaterHub environmentally the right thing to do, but it’s also economically [the] right thing to do and socially the right thing to do,” Howett said.

uesday, April 12, faculty, staff and administrators gathered in Winship Ballroom for the Employee Council Town Hall, an annual discussion in which employees discuss concerns and ask members of the administration questions.

Wagner said his presidential tenure has been “a challenging time that was guided by moral principle — that gives us courage to take a risk, humility to admit mistakes, joy in the work, achievement and service in our mission, teaching and research and scholarship and healthcare and service and social action.”

When he described his motivations as president, Wagner quoted Emory alumnus and benefactor Robert Woodruff: “The future belongs to the discontented.” Wagner added that he wished the community’s discontent, which he defined as the want for something better, to be remem-

With regards to the installation of cameras in parking decks for the safety of employees, panelists said that cameras will be installed in new decks, but that these will take years to plan and build. The cameras will record video, but there will be no staff to monitor live video around-theclock.

Several employees asked questions regarding the construction of the new Emory Hospital building on Clifton Road. Panelists responded by saying that staffing changes due to the new addition will not be significant. They added that Clifton Road in front of the hospital may be reno-

This year marks the 45th year of Employee Council, an organization founded by former University President Sanford Soverhill Atwood to foster communication between the University president and University employees, according to their website.

The Employee Council has adopted the theme “Together our Purposed Destination” for this year, and it aims to “disseminate information to constituents as well as create a positive atmosphere to promote change within the Emory Community” with a focus on increasing awareness among colleagues, according to the Council’s website.

This year also marks the last year of the Employee Council working with Wagner, who will be stepping down from his position as University president at the end of this semester. In his address to the room, he thanked Emory employees and reminisced on his time and legacy as Univer-

Members of the audience questioned the panelists, who sat in the front of the room, on various University-wide policies, ranging from campus carry to maternity and paternity leave. Questions were submitted online before the town hall and during the event itself. The questions were asked by employees and answered by panelists, one at a time, until the time allotted for questions ran out.

In their responses, panelists explained University policies or initiatives or said that they would take employee concerns into consideration.

One employee asked if Emory, like some other institutions, will be adopting policies that offer paid maternal or paternal leave. When the panelists affirmed that the University will implement such policies in the near future, employees applauded. The panelists said that the specifics are being planned and will be completed at a later

After receiving more questions about parking rates, Winship Cancer Institute and retirement policy, Jackson concluded the town hall. She recommended that employees use the Hot Topic Form on the Employee Council website to continue to ask questions and voice concerns. The Employee Council will then take those concerns and try to work them into policies, she said.

“Certainly [Employee Council] has grown,” Wagner said. “I think this has been a time where [Emory has] become a better place to work. We have shown services that go beyond the bounds of our campus.”

Students Honored at 46th Annual NAACP Image Awards

ast Saturday, April 16, the Emory chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hosted its 46th annual NAACP Image Awards at the Emory University School of Medicine Atrium to honor select Emory students for their service in pursuit of racial justice.

Re-established after a two-year hiatus due to funding constraints, the awards ceremony recognized students for their roles in promoting racial justice, with award categories for a student in each undergraduate class year, a student-athlete, a student-artist and a president of a student organization who accomplished exceptional work furthering social justice causes. College junior Lynette Dixon was recognized with the W.E.B. Du Bois Image Award for best emulating the mission of the NAACP, while student organization Students for Justice in Palestine received the Community Image Award for their service as an organization

advocating for people of color.

Roderick Bridges, a former DeKalb County Recorders Court judge, delivered the keynote address. In his speech, Bridges emphasized the role of the individual in bringing about societal change. Student performances, poetry recitations, speeches and the presentation of awards filled out the remainder of the evening.

The NAACP was founded in 1909 with the intent “to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens of United States and eliminate race prejudice” through the democratic process, according to its website. The Emory University charter was granted in 1986, according to the Emory chapter of the NAACP President and College senior Abigail López Rivera.

ohn Morgan, chair of the Emory University Board of Trustees, announced that the Presidential Selection Committee will propose a final presidential candidate for approval during the Board of Trustees’ summer meeting Friday, June 3.

Program Coordinator for the Department of Economics Stephanie Gray in an interview with the Wheel. “It’s very exciting.”

During his speech, Morgan presented several updates regarding Emory’s presidential search on behalf of the 14-member Presidential Selection Committee, of which he is the chair. The Committee has met 11 times and initiated about 50 encounters with Emory community members, including surveys and breakout sessions, Morgan added.

Through the feedback gained from the Emory community, the committee has developed a five-page document titled the “Presidential Respective,” which is intended to help presidential candidates understand the

“collective mind of Emory,” Morgan said. “I think there’s a trust that’s been built [with the community] through this process.”

The document encompasses six values that the committee will emphasize in its search: to lead, to fundraise, to leverage the health sciences, to engage broadly with other communities, to facilitate collaboration and to shift from diversity to inclusion, according to Morgan. “The next president[‘s] charge … is to address these in a very material and impactful way,” he said. “We’ve got some great candidates who are fully capable of that type of leadership.”

Morgan not only expressed optimism about the next presidency and the current status of the presiden-

tial search, but also praised University President James Wagner’s accomplishments. “[Wagner’s] term was very successful — but there’s more to do,” he said.

Associate Professor of Economics Leonard Carlson said that everything Morgan mentioned “made sense.”

However, he added that he would also work to ensure that the next president is capable of creating cohesion amongst Emory students if he were advising the search.

“I don’t think Emory students feel as excited about being here as I wish they did,” Carlson said in an interview with the Wheel. “I think Emory still has a ways to go, so I think that it’s good that [the Presidential Selection Committee] is thinking that way.”

POLICE REPORT The crime report is a selection of police-related incidences that have directly affected the Emory community in the prior week.

On April 11 at 5:27 p.m., Emory Police Department (EPD) responded to a complaint regarding kittens trapped in a sewer. DeKalb County Fire Rescue called EPD after firefighters determined that there was an unknown number of kittens trapped in the drain. Animal Services arrived and said that the kittens did not appear to be in distress.

The kittens could not be removed because they were in an inaccessible location, but an Animal Services worker said that the mother of the kittens would likely return once Animal Services and EPD left the area.

On April 12 at 7:24 p.m., EPD received a call from Clairmont Tower regarding a theft. According to the caller, the incident occurred between April 2 and April 3. A pair of Beats headphones, a Brooks Brothers watch valued at $900, prescription medication, an Xbox One and $500 cash were taken from a room at the location. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

On April 13 at 11:38 p.m., EPD received a report regarding an incident in the vicinity of 1000 Clairmont Road. According to the report, an Emory student was walking home to an off-campus apartment when he was approached by two individuals

wearing hooded sweatshirts. One of the them was carrying a handgun.

The individuals took the student’s cell phone and wallet. The case is currently under investigation.

On April 14 at 7:03 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding a theft at the Goizueta Business School.

A student stated that a wallet was taken from somewhere in the Business School between noon and the time of the call.

The student received a call later that day from someone who had found the wallet in the vicinity of 1400 Clairmont Road.

Cash and credit cards were missing when the wallet was returned. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

On April 15 at 2:57 a.m., EPD responded to a call regarding an intoxicated student in the vicinity of Woodruff Circle. A shuttle bus driver called EPD because the student appeared to be unconscious.

Emory Emergency Medical Services (EEMS) and DeKalb American

Medical Response (DAMR) arrived on the scene and transported the student to the hospital. Campus Life was notified.

On April 15 at 8:47 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding a theft at the Dobbs University Center (DUC). A student stated that she had attended an event at the DUC terraces between 6 and 7 p.m. and left her backpack at the bottom of the stairs near the post office. After the event, the student retrieved her backpack but did not notice that property was missing until later that evening. During the event, her Acer laptop, its charger and $100 cash were stolen. The case has been assigned to an investigator.

On April 16 at 5:54 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding a bike theft at Longstreet-Means Residence Hall. A student stated that he had secured his Motobecane black road bike valued at $400 to a trash can with a cable lock. He claimed that the bike was stolen on April 15 between 1:15 and 4 p.m. The case has

been assigned to an investigator.

On April 16 at 6:01 p.m., EPD received a call regarding lost or misplaced property on Eagle Row. A student stated that they had left their wallet, which contained credit cards, in an Uber between March 20 and April 1. According to the student, fraudulent purchases were made with the credit cards. The case has been assigned to a detective.

On April 17 at 2:37 p.m., EPD responded to a break-in at the Candler Mansion on Emory’s Briarcliff Campus. Officers received a call regarding an intrusion alarm that had been triggered; upon arrival at the location, officers noticed that two planks had been removed from the building and that a small hole had been made in an exterior door. Additional officers responded to the location, later coming in contact with a male and female there. The individuals said that they entered the premise but left after the alarm went-off. Officers conducted a search of one of the subject’s backpacks and found an exit sign from the location, two smoking pipes, a grinder and a green leafy substance. The officers issued a citation for possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. Facilities Management fixed the broken door.

utting my time at Emory into words is something that still confounds me.

How do I sum up four years of life, much less one that fundamentally shifted the conception of who I was and still sees the dust settling on who I am? And does Emory even get to claim responsibility for that? After all, couldn’t this have happened anywhere during my time from age 18 to 22?

Well, yes, but also no. Emory, for all its beauty and all its scars, is really the only place I think I could have done what I’ve done. Before anyone leaps to put what I’m about to say in the admissions brochure, I don’t think I can earnestly say it’s a universal reason, nor can I say it’s a reason that is necessarily positive for everyone.

I was never pre-professional. I never put myself on the train to Deloitte or medical school or a top-seven law school. And because of that, I spent a lot of time thinking Emory wasn’t really interested in me or sure what to do with me. I still think that.

But Emory gave me just enough rope to pull myself up, just enough resources to utilize, through our amazing Film Studies department, through the Wheel, through the four years I spent with the Emory International Relations Association and through Atlanta.

I had to carve my own path, because it felt like nothing else would. And that’s what Emory gave me — the earnest need and desire to find who I was and just enough to show me the way forward.

Do I thank Emory for that? Sure, this community has given me a lot, and I hope I’ve given something back. Would I do it all again? It’s too soon to tell; probably not. But I’m glad it happened, that’s for damn sure.

f all the difficult things I have taken on at Emory — massive research papers, running the College’s student government, working a 20-hour job and managing a full course load and running a half marathon — summing up my last four years here may actually be the most difficult task. I’ve decided to frame this with the help of the medium that I’m most comfortable expressing myself in: Snapchat. If I had a Snapchat story that covered my last four years at Emory, these would be the highlights.

Freshman move-in. Being simultaneously overwhelmed by how nice the building was and how isolating dorm life could be. Learning how to live with another person in the same room, but also meeting my best friends down the hall. Lots of selfies. Bid day. Relief at the end of recruitment matched only by excitement for getting to know some of the best people I would meet at Emory. Running for sophomore legislator of College Council. Getting over social anxiety to approach hundreds of students to put myself out there and ask for their vote. Attending ICE Diwali. Getting to see a vibrant cultural celebration and unfamiliar traditions. Getting an internship at the White House. Knowing that hard work and a ton of luck could take me to places I had only dreamed of. Coming to campus for my senior year. Having dinner with President Carter. Confusion about where time went. Feeling #SWUG. The rest is a blur of late nights in the library, lots of brunches, intense conversations about the meaning of life and my cult obsession with campus a capella groups.

Thank you, Emory, these memories will last far beyond the 10-second limit on Snapchat photos.

ecently, it has become very tempting to try to sum up my past four years here. I have the urge to pack everything I have learned, everyone I have met and all that I have done into a box labeled “My time at Emory University!”

Not surprisingly, change does not always work like this. Emory has taught us to analyze and synthesize all that comes our way. We yearn for epiphanies, profound changes and deep meanings.

Yet, when reflecting on my time at Emory, I find that not every moment was vibrant with significance.

In fact, resounding revelation only defines a few of my memories here.

The majority are shaped by simple activities that might appear mundane: walking around Wonderful

Wednesday, running in Lullwater and getting brunch at Rise-n-Dine.

I expected a profound transformation. But what I have learned from my time here is that it is not Emory’s duty to change me; rather, it is Emory’s duty to help me to grow into the best me.

Emory discovered me.

The ultimate value of college has been the discovery of the importance of education within personal growth. Learning is a skill I personally mastered here.

A prerequisite for learning is willingness. Through exposure, Emory has taught me the importance of willingness and openness, both of which have helped me solidify my values, opinions and perspective.

I’m still from New York City, I still have the same

major and I’m still surrounded by the same friends.

But Emory has given me the opportunity to thrive within my personal limitations, embracing them as an opportunity for learning and ultimately growing from them. I am the same, but different.

When I first arrived at Emory, there was a special sense of possibility. This immense potential was turned into energy that pushed me to sign up for unique classes, various clubs and socialize with new people.

As I prepare to graduate, it becomes easy to feel as if that energy has slipped away from me through the mystery of time. But the reality is, this energy is just beginning to take hold. After all, as I am sure you all have heard, this is just the beginning.

fter four years of contributing to campus and establishing a community of care, it’s time to air some grievances. I’ve done my time as an Orientation Leader and an Orientation Captain. I’ve given 500 million campus tours under the hot Georgia sun. I’ve been a peppy, cheery campus leader for four years.

Now it’s time to get real.

Because I genuinely do love Emory, I’ve split my reflection into two parts: a profession of love and an airing of grievances.

I’ll begin with the bad and the ugly before we get to the good.

Grievance 1: Why and how are there so many genuinely rude people on this campus? You know the type without me even having to say it. I have a simple request for the rude people: please cool it? Cut it out.

Read a book. Drink a smoothie. Do something else with your time. I’m not even asking you to be nice. I’m just asking you not to be rude. Even impassivity would be a step up.

Grievance 2: Why is parking on campus so expensive and awful? How does access to a single parking

garage — at my place of residence — cost over $650?

And why is there a payment plan for Emory employees but not Emory students? Also, how has that guy booting people in Emory Village not been arrested?

He booted me for going to Starbucks, demanded I pay in cash and refused to write anything down. I’ve got a pretty solid B in Business Law right now, so I feel moderately confident in saying that there’s some tax fraud going on over there. If not tax fraud, at least some major shenanigans.

Grievance 3: How are so many of my fellow students going to be “future business leaders of America” when they have no actual concept of earning and budgeting money? I feel like this question should pop up as an answer whenever someone searches on Google, “How did the financial crisis happen?”

Something I love 1: My professors. Some of their methods were friendly, and some of their methods were brutal, but they pushed me to be a smarter person and a stronger writer. They invited my classes to their houses for dinner or sent me emails during breaks to articles they thought I would find amusing.

didn’t start out at Emory aiming to become Copy Chief for the Wheel. It’s quite an unassuming, silent title that is only a part of my life here, and no one tends to listen to you even if you’re making sure they don’t put their feet in their mouths. That’s not to say I didn’t value my time there; I did, very much. My gratitude to Benazir Wehelie, my partner-in-arms, for always being there, either to help me or to laugh with me in delirium well past midnights.

For the most part, I have loved my time at Emory.

Anyone who knows of me is surprised I’m even graduating, but those who really know me know what I’ve been through and stood by me — I truly appreciate that, you know who you are. I have met so many driven, talented, amazing, inspiring, caring peers and professors here. I have interned at a national newspaper, made acquaintance with the Indian Prime Minister, had classes with ambassadors from at least four countries, been taught under two Pulitzer Prize-winning authors — not to mention Salman Rushdie — and discovered stories and cultures that will definitely feature in the book that I hope to publish soon. But the opposite is also true.

I have met selfish, ignorant, materialistic know-it-alls who have had no qualms about stepping over those less fortunate.

It is this paradox that I stepped into, this dichotomy of being a college student in America that has shaped me as a person, as someone who initially came from the other side of the world and still feels like she goes unheard because people think their activism is more important than hers. People have been hearing, yes, but in that age-old sense, they have not been listening.

I implore everyone to listen.

Today, when mere labels spark intense debates and everyone wants to exercise their freedom of speech, it is important to remember to win wars with knowledge rather than battles with anecdotal facts. Take a second in this microcosm that is Emory to think, and then be courageous.

I have listened, I have learned and I have enjoyed. And I will never forget it for the rest of my life.

Something I love 2: Opportunities for independent projects. If you’re interested in something at Emory, you can research it, write about it and get support. The professors here rock. The library is phenomenal. We have access to almost every database. You have to actively try not to learn something cool at Emory.

Something I love 3: The not-rude people. In general, I’ve found that most people at Emory are not rude.

Many are even genuine, kind and hilarious. These are the people that I will remember. These are the memories I will cherish — realizing you’ve crossed the line from friendship to best-friendship. Using a group chat as a complaint discussion board and meme repository.

Laughing until your eyes water (and maybe even pee a little) when you really should be studying. Enjoying a snow day. Eating Chick-fil-A and talking about the boys you have a crush on. This is what college is all about. Learning, too. But also Chick-fil-A. Something I love 4: Atlanta. What a phenomenal city. I’m happy I’m sticking around.

Something I love 5: Those new fries at the DUC. The perfect amount of crispy yet tender. Enough said.

t has been exactly 1,335 days since I embarked on my journey at Emory University. Translated into another unit of time, it’s been three years, seven months and 27 days. In hours, it’s been 32,040, or about 1,922,400 minutes. Broken down even smaller is 115,344,000 seconds. That’s a lot of time.

Looking back at those 100-some odd millions of seconds that I have spent walking these green grounds, fostering friendships over shared excitement and creating connections through communication, I have very little regret.

Sure, I wish I had spent more of those seconds studying for Intro to Ethics my freshman year, but it wouldn’t have led me to my present academic path. Maybe I wish I hadn’t spent so many seconds chasing after imaginary romances and dealing with heartbreak and sadness and second-guessing myself, but it wouldn’t have led me to the life-changing relationship I’m in now.

Possibly I could have used more seconds to sleep eat and take better care of my body, mind and soul, but the journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance isn’t supposed to be a straight line.

There are many things in my time at Emory I enjoyed: making beautiful music in Schwartz; late night Domino’s and deep talks; discussing life, art and creation with the Dalai Lama and Salman Rushdie. I will miss the extracurricular activities that have helped me help make Emory a better place: the University Center Board, Arts Showcase, Residence Life, the Delts and yes, even the Wheel.

There are also things I hated: Financial Accounting; unnecessary bureaucracy and paperwork; the way many major student organizations were run. I will not miss 4 a.m. calls as an RA to unlock people’s rooms, the unhealthy obsession this campus has with a shitty dive bar, the self-importance of far too many people here and how ill-informed most of this campus is about how journalism and the newspaper works.

In all of these events, happenings and emotions that have summed up my time at Emory, I have learned one thing above all else: We aren’t given second chances on our lives, so be sure to make every second count.

A Conservative Against Milo Yiannopoulos Amelia Sims | College Senior Memphis, Tennessee

A

s a campus conservative, former chair of the Emory College Republicans and advocate for free speech, I condemn the crude and hateful rhetoric of Milo Yiannopoulos. Yiannopoulos does not speak for most Republicans, or for conservatives for that matter, and his obscene posturing is not representative of the substantive discourse that College Republicans have traditionally endorsed and promoted through their programming this year.

Though Yiannopoulos initially reached out to the Emory College Republicans after the Donald Trump chalking incident in March, the executive board refused to engage his appeals. An Emory Law student, in coordination with individual club members, organized and planned his speaking event using private funds. Many members of the executive board and of the club’s general body were neither aware of the event’s organization nor in favor of the event taking place at all.

Yiannopoulos specializes in stoking resentment, grievances and ugly passions. He praises offensiveness for its own sake. Traditionally, conservatives have taught that freedom is most fully realized through our actions with others and through the recognition of mutual rights and duties. Though we have the right to freedom of speech, we also have the duty to promote civil discourse and debate. Exalting crudity, offense, and cruel ad-hominem attacks as virtues only inhibits political discourse and undermines the very goal of free speech — the free exchange of ideas.

Though Yiannopoulos postures as a spokesman for “reasoned argument,” he also commands his audience to “be as offensive as possible.” This provocation exacerbates the fractionalized identity politics he claims to condemn. Championing incivility as the salvation of free speech disintegrates common language necessary for democracy to thrive. The very word, incivility, derives from the Latin word incivilis, which means “not

of a citizen.” To be uncivil, then, is to act in a way that is contrary to responsible citizenship.

Provocateurs such as Yiannopoulos assume that civility is synonymous with lack of conviction, that to be a civilized individual means to be devoid of principles or passion and unwilling to fight for truth or great causes. But, of course, one can be a fervent and effective advocate for liberty, free speech and justice without being uncivil.

A person can be both civil and angry at injustice. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his letter from Birmingham City Jail, demonstrated that. Pro-life

Yiannopoulos specializes in stoking resentment, grievances and ugly passions. He praises offensiveness for its own sake. advocates such as Pope Francis argue that abortion is an injustice without dehumanizing pro-life opponents.

We can speak the truth, call things by their rightful name, reply to faulty arguments and still be civil. In fact, the act of arguing awakens reason.

It sharpens the mind through exercise. Shutting down a political opponent with cruel jokes and ad-hominem attacks, however, prevents any argument at all.

Civility assumes that basic manners are what we owe others as fellow citizens and fellow human beings. Civility protects us against temptations to demonize and dehumanize those who hold views

different from our own. Civility is, as Alexis de Tocqueville argues, a precondition for democratic dialogue. Living civilly in society entails having an awareness that our actions and words can have significant effects on the lives of others.

I write to assure the Emory community that last Wednesday’s event and the values it celebrated are not representative of most Republicans at Emory and are not indicative of what it means to be a conservative.

Conservatives seek to defend human dignity, ordered individual and economic liberty, personal responsibility, equality under the law, religious freedom and a commitment to American principles of federalism and the U.S. Constitution.

We oppose outsourced, state imposed responsibility and favor involved, personal community responsibility, because we believe that our cherished customs and institutions have grown from below.

Conservatism seeks just laws and social arrangements that encourage individual moral progress while respecting human liberty and dignity. It emphasizes the importance of the mediating institutions of a free society — families, communities, civic and religious groups, markets and more — that stand between the individual and the state.

I am aware that not all people who identify as conservative hold these tenets, but they do represent the beliefs of a tradition that has been upheld in America intellectually, culturally and politically. I believe these principles are worth defending and articulating.

Being Republican does not presuppose the rude vulgarity of egotists like Yiannopoulos who condone violence and cruelty. This effort to turn conservatism into a bonfire of rage, a spectacle of insults, is a disservice to conservatism and to those who have represented it well on campus and over the centuries.

Diversity: The College Admissions Buzzword Ryan Fan | College Freshman Stony Brook, New York

I

n the 21st century, diversity has become one of the most valued traits of any workplace or college campus. It represents the pinnacle of any developed, progressive society; it is the barometer of acceptance and fairness. Like any other core value of organizations and institutions, however, diversity has become overused and exploited.

In Jezebel founder Anna Holmes’ New York Times article, “Has ‘Diversity’ Lost Its Meaning?” she highlights how many corporations and institutions boast the image of diversity rather than actively pursuing it.

Holmes, an African American, detailed how her boss had received a significant bonus for recruiting her as an employee.

Examples like Holmes’ showcase that many institutions view and execute diversity in a flawed way. They pursue it to boost their image rather than to actualize an ideal of equality.

In the filming of Project Greenlight, actor Matt Damon received significant backlash for telling Effie Brown, a veteran African American female producer, “When you’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film, not the casting of the show.” Basically, Damon was stating that it’s more important to have diversity on camera than behind it.

Although having a diverse college campus is an integral part of every student’s college experience, many campuses and institutions exploit it as a marketing scheme to appeal to high school students who value inclusion and equality.

In 2000, the University of Wisconsin photoshopped the face of black student Diallo Shabazz onto the front cover of an application booklet. The photo was taken during a football game.

The problem? Shabazz wasn’t at the game. This phenomenon, when a superordinate group overrepresents the prevalence of a minority group, is known as “overplaying the diversity card.” When a superordinate group does this, it makes clear the group’s true motive: to bolster its image rather than its foundational strength.

However, could this flaw be a good thing? Even if colleges and universities do overplay the diversity card to get more minorities to apply, minority attendance will ultimately increase and the misleading brochures may become a reality. Nevertheless, minority students are being mislead with regards to how integrated the college campus is.

The problem is that diversity is far more complex than just simple definitions of heterogeneity and integration.

As a concept, it is mostly subjective.

At Emory, a diverse faculty could mean that less than 10 percent of the

faculty is comprised of minorities, or that minorities make up over 40 percent of the faculty.

At the most basic level, diversity represents heterogeneity — an amalgamation of different ethnicities, cultures, religions and classes.

University of Michigan Sociology Professor Emeritus Reynolds Farley’s 2004 Detroit area study examined differences in living preferences between white and black respondents.

The results showed that over 80 percent of African Americans surveyed preferred to live a neighborhood with at least a 50-50 mix of whites and blacks. However, only 35 percent of whites surveyed would consider living in such a neighborhood.

Diversity is appealing for administrators because it’s an all-encompassing code word used as a safety valve for institutions to be perceived as legitimate without backlash.

Most universities want to be seen as diverse, whether it be for their image or for a more engaging campus. Few would criticize a university for embracing diversity.

The image and facade of diversity college campuses project give them a sacred status, making them almost above criticisms of inequality.

In addition, a major benefit of having a diverse campus is that different groups of people who hold a wide range of ideas can engage each other in productive dialogue. Ideally, that is how students learn from each other.

However, in many instances, cliques form between like-minded people. Without proactive measures, homogenous student groups insulate themselves from engaging with peers who are significantly different from themselves. Dialogue in those cases is not as present.

Diversity represents an air of suppressed tension at universities that deals with differences along racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, or religious lines. It implies that discrimination and prejudice are something that “might happen over there, but not here.”

As we have seen in recent protests at universities around the country, that is simply not true. It’s a disingenuous word of false hope, a way to avoid admitting the faults or weaknesses of inequality that are inherent to any institution, even if they’re unintentional.

According to Ellen Berrey, a sociology professor at the University of Denver, “diversity is how we talk about race when we can’t talk about race. It has become a stand-in when open discussion of race is too controversial.”

The use of the word “diversity” is a cloak and marketing tactic to distract us from advancing actual inclusion and equality. Furthermore, it is the ultimate college admissions buzzword.

‘The Jungle Book’

Is A Technological Revolution

I

n a way, The Jungle Book feels like the sequel to Avatar that we never got (and despite James Cameron’s promises, probably never will get).

You remember Avatar, the highest-grossing film of all time and technologically wondrous feat that no one seems to remember anything more of than a basic plot summary and a few jokes?

Well, that wondrous technology ended up being wildly more important than the film itself. The advances and capabilities of CGI that Avatar displayed

Grade: Afundamentally altered the film industry, and director Jon Favreau’s work on The Jungle Book represents the next major technological step forward.

The Jungle Book is based on the 1967 Disney animated classic of the same name, which is loosely based on the collection of stories, also of the same name, by Rudyard Kipling.

The film takes a great deal more from the former than the latter, so you probably know the story. After noble panther Bagheera (voiced by Ben Kingsley) finds young

Mowgli (Neel Sethi), the child is raised in the jungles of India by a pack of wolves.

But when Mowgli’s wolf pack is threatened by the evil tiger Shere Khan (voiced by Idris Elba), Mowgli must embark on an adventure to find his place as a human and escape the threats of Shere Khan.

In terms of a story, nothing is all that new in the latest The Jungle Book, partially because it’s a remake, but partially because the film doesn’t seem all that interested in finding anything new to tell within the

It maintains largely the same moral as The Jungle Book (1967) — everyone has their place and everyone needs to work together — and it largely keeps the Disney film’s episodic structure. It even preserves the two great musical numbers: “Bear Necessities” and “I Want To Be Like You.” The only real diversion that this film takes from the animated The Jungle Book is in its attempts to reintegrate some of Kipling’s original mythic seriousness into the narrative (there were no musical numbers and colorful animals in Kipling’s stories), which creates a markedly more intense tone for this film.

That tone comes not just in the occasional scary moment, but in a certain, almost spiritual, reverence that’s been given to the jungle, imbuing the film with a certain level of awe that is both unearned and completely earned.

It is unearned, because the film never completely reconciles the family-friendly bits with the more serious bits.

It is earned, because there are few things that feel more awe-inspiring than what’s on display in The Jungle Book.

Honestly, I front-loaded the story so it’ll sound like there’s something I wanted discuss here besides the sheer mind-blowing nature of the visual work. The Jungle Book seems to represent one of the greatest visual advancements in years and seems to unlock a new world of blockbuster potential. There’s a single real element in The Jungle Book, and that’s actor Neel Sethi as Mowgli.

Besides him, every other element and frame of the film is created digitally. From the talking animals to the jungle itself, this huge adventure was created entirely on a backlot in Los Angeles.

Yet, sitting through it, I never felt the need to question

Once the first 10 minutes of sheer impressiveness settles down, you become transported away to the world of The Jungle Book. It’s not about “Wow, that tiger’s lipsyncing is really well-done.” You never think about or question it — yes, that tiger can talk, and that’s part of the reality to which The Jungle Book transports you for its run time.

Favreau never wants you to think about it; he just wants you to get lost in it.

You’ve gotta go see [The Jungle Book] on the biggest, most immersive screen possible.

Of course, much of that is also thanks to the work of the voice actors and to Favreau’s direction of them. The entire cast seems pitch-perfectly chosen, and no one feels like they’re phoning it in.

One special shout-out should be reserved for Bill Murray as the voice of Baloo, the bear friend of Mowgli, which was a choice so obvious that it loops back around

to being absolutely inspired.

Baloo feels wise in his laziness, and so much of that is due to the looseness that Murray has.

The other special shout-out is to Elba as Shere Khan, who proves himself as a bona fide villain through the sinister, dark rumbles of his threats. There’s a tight control to his anger in this film, and I’ve never felt so legitimately threatened by a fake tiger.

It’s odd that the most artificial actor in the film is the only real one. Sethi is the film’s glaringly out of place weak point.

He’s fine, and his character, Mowgli, is fine, but he seems weirdly artificial compared to the rest of the film, like he’s never sure where he is. It’s not destructive, but it’s certainly the one thing that threatened to pull me out of the world of the film.

Which is the one thing that The Jungle Book doesn’t want. The primary strength of the film is that it never loses that immersion.

Sure, we’ve seen this story before, and it doesn’t mean so much.

But cinema can be a transportational experience, taking us from this world to a beautiful other place.

Like Avatar did to Pandora, so The Jungle Book does to the jungles of India.

See this film in a theater if you get a chance.

Don’t let yourself get caught up in the weird kid acting or in the loose story structure, like you might if you watched it on DVD or streaming or on the back of a plane headrest.

You’ve gotta go see it on the biggest, most immersive screen possible.

Let yourself get taken away to another place, a world of magic, wonder and homicidal tigers with the voice of a golden god.

Few things this year are quite so worth it.

I

never thought any film would make me feel secure about my masculinity, but Hardcore Henry solidified that my insecurities do not run anywhere near as deep as those of director Ilya Naishuller.

It isn’t as though unquestioned masculinity hasn’t always been a part of the action genre, nor is it as though that’s a bad thing. It’s simply embedded in the genre, especially in American cinema. Action movies often consist of big, manly dudes doing manly things, usually involving rampant murder. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t always kind of into it, especially when it’s creative.

But Hardcore Henry illustrates that tendency to the most excessive degree, taking it wholesale from the action film and combining it with the even more excessively masculine, excessively depersonalized murder-oriented nature of the modern first-person shooter (think Call of Duty) and creating a multiplier effect that seems to make Hardcore Henry into a straight-faced parody of itself, seemingly unaware of its own ridiculousness.

I’ve gotten three paragraphs into this review without mentioning the massive gimmick at the center of this film or the film’s story, and that’s because the presence of the former really leads to the lack of the latter.

Hardcore Henry is an action film that’s shot entirely with a GoPro attached to a stuntman’s head, placing us into the perspective of Henry, a man rebuilt as a cyborg (without a speech module, so he never speaks). He embarks on a quest to rescue his wife (Haley Bennett) from an evil effeminate Russian guy, Akan (Danila Kozlovsky). Henry is helped along on his rampage by his constantly reincarnating buddy Jimmy (Sharlto Copley), who gives him clues and weapons like a video game deus ex machina.

That’s about all you need to know. And

Grade: D to be fair, it probably sounds pretty intriguing. An action film that tries to put you right in the middle of the action?

What could be better?

But for that to work, Hardcore Henry would have to work as an action film, and it doesn’t. It’s not the action part — there’s plenty of that — and there’s plenty of creativity on display in the action beats unfolding before us.

Naishuller clearly sat down and thought through what he wanted his stuntmen to do as Henry, and there’s a certain sort of sick glee in the punishments the director doles out to the poor extras that have the unfortunate pass of crossing Henry.

Of course, all that chaos would work better if I gave a fuck watching it.

While I admit that this is a case of perceived mileage that can vary from person to person, I found the first-person perspective immensely disorienting, and not in the way the filmmakers intended.

Rather than using the first-person perspective to make the film feel like you’re in the middle of a shitshow of violence, the filmmakers seem to use the first-person perspective as an excuse to forgo any sense of geography in their action, moving from moment to moment and action beat to action beat without any sense of who you are or of what the absolute hell is happening.

I understand that Hardcore Henry functionally is a live-action video game and that the depersonalization of the main character is part of the video game conventions in which this film engages.

But that understanding of how video games work (or how this mechanic worked in the brief music videos the film is based on) is coupled with a lack of understanding of how the medium of narrative film works.

Film requires personalization. We can’t just have an avatar to project onto,

we need a character with whom we identify. Even in the deepest power fantasies of film, we want to root for someone to succeed, not to see ourselves succeed.

While I understand the choice of depersonalizing the main character, I can’t say I agree with it. Hardcore Henry needed something, anything, to ground it in the bananas experience playing out in front of us.

Without any personal grounding, we’re just left with a narrative and thematic mess. Hardcore Henry’s message is actually somewhere in the area of “Don’t be a pussy,” or more accurately, “Be willing to prove you’re not a pussy by standing up and being violent.” In a film shockingly (or not so shockingly) devoid of emotion, this kind of message resonates with the hollow and toxic masculinity at the core of this film, the idea that proving your toughness comes through excessive and righteous violence.

This especially leans heavily into the film’s treatment of women. It’s a mild spoiler to say this, but Hardcore Henry has a Madonna and whore complex (except replace Madonna with liar). If a woman does not exist for sexual gratification, then she exists to screw somebody over,

to nag or to do something along those lines. Read with the effeminate coding of the main villain (long hair and neat dress sense with a power and a mode of attack that involves pushing away and keeping his distance), and it’s clear that this excessively masculine film has major issues when it comes to women.

The problem is that a better or more clearly nuanced film could have sold this as satire, as a deconstruction. But I don’t think the film ever had that in mind.

There’s a very macho, great-man sense of toxic masculinity underlining the film here that turns the film’s conceptions of its world into excess and trash.

I hate to say it, but a traditional filming style could have sold the story better. I admire the ambition, but giving us an actual main character to grapple with could have worked the film’s thematics a little stronger, and giving us a pulled back perspective still could have sold the creativity of the action.

As it is, Hardcore Henry is nothing but the excessive overcompensation for clear masculine insecurities manifested in an experiment better suited for future days when we can all actually afford an Oculus VR headset.

ailing from the live music capital of Austin, Texas, multi-instrumentalist Max Frost grew up in an environment that fostered an appreciation for music — an influence that still affects him today. Frost’s career took off in December 2013 when his single “White Lies” charted at No. 1 on the music sharing website, Hype Machine. His songs, which incorporate elements from R&B, funk and blues, strike a balance between a classical and energized sound.

After briefly studying English at the University of Texas at Austin, Frost decided to drop out to pursue a career in music. He released his debut EP Low High Low in October 2013.

In Frost’s latest EP, Intoxication, released in September 2015, he continues to seamlessly synthesize elements of otherwise distinctive musical genres. In doing so, Frost pioneers his own genre, challenging the idea that music must conform to a single category.

Frost will perform in Atlanta at Vinyl on May 11. The Emory Wheel talked with him over the phone about the inspiration behind Intoxication and his current tour, as well as his musical influences.

Ilana Berghash, The Emory Wheel: What are you most excited about for your first headlining tour?

Max Frost: I am most excited about seeing the small growth that you normally see whenever you hit a city for the second or third time. [There are] a couple of perks to being a headliner, which are that you don’t have to do the soundcheck first and [that] you can chill.

I’m looking forward to having more downtime after the soundcheck to get into a vibe. It’s always tough being an opener when sometimes you’re literally soundchecking until 10 seconds before you have to play. You don’t have

a moment to catch your breath.

But I’m most excited to tour, period. I’ve had my ups and downs with the tour lifestyle. Especially with this last run, I dialed into something that’s a little smarter.

I’ve learned a little more about how to be in the trenches without killing yourself.

If you go about it the wrong way and you treat it like a road trip, [touring] will kick your ass. If you can pace yourself the right way and treat it like [something] you’re about to have to do [for] a long, long, long time, then it’s more sustainable. Even though this is a 12show run, [which is] a pretty short run.

You have to look at it like, if this one goes well, I’ll probably have a few weeks, and then I’ll do another one on the West Coast.

Maya Nair, The Emory Wheel: What made you decide to release EPs and singles instead of waiting to release a full length album?

MF: I guess it’s just more what the Internet medium calls for with music now. I feel like albums serve a much clearer purpose — [they’re] now only for the biggest of the big artists. [For] someone like me — an artist who is still growing his identity and unveiling what he’s really trying to do — it makes more sense to do that selectively, one song at a time. The way it’s worked, I put a song out, and a blog will pick it up. Then it will go to Hype Machine and has a built-in opening of a couple hundred thousand listens. Any other way I’ve put out [a song] has been dramatically less successful than putting a song out [that goes through] Hype Machine.

Hype Machine was [how] I started from the beginning, and it’s continued to be the thing that has allowed me to make a bang with [releasing] a song — a small bang.

EW: You went to UT-Austin for a year and studied English. Did your love for literature tie into your music?

MF: I wouldn’t say I have a love for literature. When you say literature, you mean a lot of shit. Most of the stuff that I ever had to read I totally hated. I finally realized [that] English as a major is where you’re making up a bunch of shit about something that someone else made up. You’re reading this book that this other person wrote, probably so long ago that it’s kinda absurd that you’re reading it. It was written at a time where people spoke totally differently, so you’re trying to pull out anything that makes sense to you about what they said. Then you finally get it, and then you have to conjure up all this other connective stuff, but it’s just shit you made up. And if what you made up makes enough sense, then they go, “Oh, okay. That’s nice. A+.” It’s just ridiculous. The stuff that influences my songwriting is like [Charles] Bukowski and more of modern poetry that says what it means and gets to the point and isn’t very flowery. But, I definitely read. I think the last book that I read was How Music Works by David Byrne. I don’t read much fiction anymore. To me, Harry Potter was the best fiction — it’s never going to get any better than that.

EW: What do you have planned for the rest of 2016?

MF: I’m going to [do] a lot more touring (other than this tour). I’ve got more new music that I’m excited about … I’m going to continue to make music this year — more than usual. I’ve found a way where I can continue to write and record while I’m on the road, which is really good. I think it’s going to be a productive year.

In the singles or EP or album way, I’m definitely putting out more music than I ever have in any other year.

Putting a New ‘Spin’ on Sustainability

SportsArt Fitness electricity-generating bike will be installed in the Woodruff Physical Education Center (WoodPEC) shortly after graduation and will be paid for through a $3,000 grant awarded to College junior Madeline Brown by the Office of Sustainability Initiatives (OSI). “[Brown] actually contacted me in September, so that’s how long this has kind of been in the works,” said Director of Recreation and Athletic Facilities and Operations Timber Hines. “She was studying abroad in Argentina last semester, and she really took this project on as an Emory initiative because she’s very interested in sustainability and has participated in a number of our spin classes.”

Brown met with members of the WoodPEC staff, electricians, graphic designers and OSI staff to implement the project. According to Brown, Emory is continuing to strive to reduce its energy consumption.

Brown’s initiative is definitely a step in achieving the sustainability aspect of Emory’s mission. SportsArt Fitness has released eco-friendly bikes that are more comparable in price to average spin bikes. Brown hopes that, as this technology becomes even more affordable, it will be more economically advantageous for institutions such as Emory to invest in these products.

The bike is scheduled to arrive mid-May and will be available for use shortly thereafter at the WoodPEC. “She did absolutely all of the research and found the particular bike that was put in for with the grant and with the Office of Sustainability,” Hines said. “With Madeline’s research and then us looking at the space in the spin studio, it just seemed like a win-win to have that particular one and for us to kind of work together to make this happen.”

While it will not make an extensive impact on the WoodPEC’s energy usage, Brown believes it could be the first of many energy-generating technologies to be introduced on campus.

“We’re hoping that it’s sort of a pilot, that people get excited about it, and that in the future, because [Emory does] replace the bikes every five or 10 years, that the school will consider investing in these [electricity-generating] bikes,” Brown said.

According to Brown, the bike’s price tag is almost double that of a regular spin bike, but it is estimated to save the WoodPEC $205.86 over five years.

“It’s empowering because you see people working so hard [in the spin studio],” Brown said. “I just kept thinking back to seventh grade physics and [the idea that] a generator spins a wheel and that’s how you generate electricity … and we’re all spinning wheels,” Brown said.

Brown, along with College senior Megan Rosa, are developing a graphic that is intended to show the sustainability bike’s user how much energy is generated per hour and how that value compares to individual energy expenditures in day-today life. The scale depicted by the graphic begins at five watt-hours, which is the amount of energy needed to sustain an hour-long iPhone call.

The greatest energy value on the graphic is 150 watt-hours, about the amount of energy required to brew a pot of coffee. The goal of the graphic is not only to encourage mindfulness about energy usage, but also to motivate bikers to push harder and generate more electricity.

“If you work for an hour really hard in the spin studio, you [could] generate enough electricity to charge three phones,” Brown said.

College freshman Shirley Ma is an environmental science major who heard about the bike. “[I] would definitely try to go [to the gym] more often if they had the [electricity-generating] spin bike,” Ma said.

Brown believes that by combining sustainability and exercise, she has found a way to educate, motivate and empower students like Ma so that they can be healthy, well-informed stewards of the environment.

Carlton Mackey Brings

‘Fifty Shades of Black’ to Emory

arlton Mackey, the director of the Ethics and the Arts Program and the assistant director of the D. Abbott Turner Program in Ethics and Servant Leadership (EASL) at Emory, spoke at the Emory Center for Ethics last night.

Mackey discussed art, culture, creativity and consciousness and how black identity is influenced by the political and social culture in which it exists.

The professional photographer and filmmaker highlighted the idea of art as a catalyst of change for issues including those of sexuality, race, masculinity and beauty standards.

“Blackness is not a monolith,” Mackey said during his speech. “When we talk about black culture, we are not talking about one thing … it is a vast, diverse realm within this whole conversation about diversity itself.”

Mackey has been touring the country speaking about “50 Shades of Black,” a movement he created in 2012 which “aims to explore the ways in which our individual experiences of race and sexuality give rise to the formation of our unique and complex identities,” according to the Emory Center for Ethics’ website.

“Art is able to multifunction in that it can present multiple messages at the same time … and it opens up itself for multiple points of entry,” Mackey said. “It appeals to our senses in multiple ways in that it makes it a very effective tool for social and political engagement.”

Although Mackey has considered himself an artist since his time in college, he recalls a definitive shift in his focus as his art became more focused on activism.

“I think what I was just trying to do was be a great photographer … what it was really about was capturing the beauty of people for who they are and what they are,” Mackey said.

“Historical movements for social change have a wonderful, rich legacy in how they’ve been advanced on college campuses,” he said.

As “50 Shades of Black” gained popularity, Mackey decided to expand the idea beyond a website, and self-published a book in 2013 called 50 Shades of Black Vol. 1, which is a collection of artistic expressions including photographs and stories which explore his ideas.

Now, the idea has even expanded to a larger movement, “BEAUTIFUL IN EVERY SHADE,” which is comprised of four of his projects: “50 Shades of Black,” “50 Shades of Latino,” “Black Men Smile” and “Typical American Families.”

“This age is one where college students are both still naïve enough to think that anything is possible, which is a great asset, and they have just enough knowledge to have enough understanding of issues to where they can begin to understand the complexities of it,” Mackey said. “And they’re right on the verge of being able to see how those issues connect to their own lives.”

Organization Provides Language Translation Between Patients, Doctors Karissa Dzurik | Contributing Writer

he Emory Volunteer Medical Interpretation Services (EVMIS), composed of undergraduate and graduate students, provides Spanish-English translation services between patients and their doctors.

The organization started five years ago when the Good Samaritan Health Center recognized their need for medical interpreters. The idea behind the organization is to allow students who are fluent in Spanish to train professionally as interpreters and then volunteer their services, according to Peter Brown, professor of Anthropology and faculty advisor to EVMIS. Brown said that the idea struck a chord with Emory students, and the organization has grown rapidly since then.

Students who meet language requirements can apply to the EVMIS program.

Training is then provided by Culture Connect, a nonprofit that provides “professional interpretation and translation in over 45 languages in the medical, educational, social and legal fields,” according to its website.

“There’s a lot of linguistic barriers to healthcare, and EVMIS is trying to really bridge that gap as best we can,” Georgette Cox, the newly-elected EVMIS executive director, said. “It’s important to be able to communicate in an effective way to those who don’t speak English and what that’s going to do for them in terms of how do they take care of themselves, how do they communicate with [their healthcare] providers, and I think it’s really important for people to understand that this matters.”

Interpreters receive experience working hands-on with medical professionals and patients.

“When I first started interpreting, I was really shy and didn’t feel comfortable speaking, like I wasn’t saying [anything correctly],” said College junior Samantha Flores, the EVMIS director of development. “But as you practice more and volunteer more, you become more comfortable, you do know what you’re saying, you’re ca-

pable of doing this job and helping this other person. It helped me be more confident in my speech.”

College junior and EVMIS President Juan Caceres believes that helping others through the interpreting service is the heart of EVMIS. A lot of patients are immigrants and refugees from around the world. Many don’t know how to speak English and don’t have a lot of money but need help and interpretation, according to Caceres.

“Being able to help them and seeing them smile because they can get the proper healthcare and attention is really great,” Caceres said. “It makes my day when I go in and help someone, and they always thank me at the end. It’s awesome.”

EVMIS combines the language abilities Emory students have to offer with the unique services of nonprofits in the Atlanta community to make the most of the resources they have available. “[EVMIS] is a very unique opportunity to get involved and help someone. Not only are you directly impacting someone and their healthcare, but you’re also shadowing someone like a doctor and seeing what they do … it’s a very valuable experience,” Flores said.

In the future, Cox sees potential for EVMIS to expand beyond just Spanish translation. In light of the Undergraduate Disability Studies Initiative (uDSI) adding American Sign Language (ASL) as a for-credit course at Emory, Cox stated that she would like to see EVMIS incorporate ASL into their program.

“We’re trying to work with [uDSI] to see what can be done about maybe in the future having something in place to train students [in] ASL and maybe be certified as an ASL interpreter in a medical setting,” Cox said.

Dear Study Situation, First off, I’m being advised to tell you not to celebrate today’s date. That’s illegal and

irresponsible, and I need to know exactly where you got those substances and how much they cost.

But come summer, the last thing you want to do is write about the intersectional sociological intertextual nature of being or study for biology (I know nothing about biology). So, how do you regain the fire and get thirsty for knowledge like you haven’t learned anything in nine months?

Understand that this whole college thing doesn’t really work without studying. If you’re at Emory, there’s a good chance you were one of those kids who didn’t have to study in high school. You know, a jackass. It’s okay, I was there, too. But college is about understanding huge concepts in very in-depth ways. You gotta keep your head

buried in those books. C’s may get degrees, but a degree is worth nothing without knowledge. After all, [insert your least favorite political candidate here] went to [insert prestigious university here], and look where they are now.

I had a joke there, but I’m not about to step into any minefields.

Maybe you did work hard, but you’ve never been pushed that hard until college.

It’s all kinds of different here. Burning out is okay; we all get there at some point.

I run this advice column largely to avoid the mountains of work I’ve gotta do. You know, being a skeleton is mostly paperwork, but it’s still hard.

So, I know what I’m about to say likely runs contrary to every Type A bone in everybody at this institution. Meter out your studying. Stop and smell the roses between real achievable goals. Maybe not literally; the roses at this school are full of bees so large they occasionally fight Godzilla.

But give yourself time to breathe.

Stop and work in truly achievable portions, and eventually you’ll know that you can get stuff done, and it’ll help get your motivation back up.

Barring all that, hook a car battery up directly to your body and pay a guy to shock you every time you stop studying. I know a guy — his name is Skeezy Dave, and he’s good for it.

Sometimes you gotta take extreme measures.

With less than a month to graduation, it’s really starting to hit me that I’m about to go off into the “real world,” get a job, raise a family and stop blacking out and waking up on some random lawn in Decatur every weekend. What’s the best way to reflect on my Emory experience, and what should I do post-graduation?

Sincerely, Sentimental Senior Dear Sentimental Senior, I feel you so hard right now. Honestly. Right in where my heart would be if I wasn’t just an empty rib cage.

The end of senior year is hard, not just because you have to go out into the real world, get a job, pay your own rent for the first time, and come face to face with the fact that your arts degree probably means you’ll be eating cardboard and ketchup for a few years.

But also because you’re leaving lots behind, like those hazy memories of nights as the Grand Poobah of Party, and nights of deep, shameful regret that can only be fully understood after hours-long conversations with your therapist about your relationship with your father. To be fair, those two things usually occur the same night.

But you’ve built up years of friends, routines, connections and classes, and you’re about to leave that behind for the promise of becoming a real human who has a job at Deloitte or the Carter Center or in your dreams. This can be hard, and every person can and will have a different way to go about it. Here’s a few things I have been thinking through recently to help process that: Figure Out Your Friends Let’s face it, you probably don’t talk to many people from high school anymore, even though you all promised you would stay in touch. It’s what happens. Eventually you’re living out in Los Angeles and having nightly Illuminati parties, and they’re in Minneapolis raising three kids and working as a manager. You lose track of what you may have ever had in common.

But there is a small group of people that you still want to keep track of beyond Facebook, or whatever will replace Facebook in the future. Perhaps Mindbook.

Start that now. Get close with the people you think are worthwhile, and strengthen those relationships. Go drink and pass out on a lawn with them. Explore Atlanta;

there’s a lot going on in the city besides that one Toco Hills bar that my Uber driver once called “a real shithole.”

Build those relationships now. It’ll make it easier not to lose track of one another, so when you awkwardly run into your college best friend at one of those Illuminati parties, you’ll have something to talk about with each other.

Do Everything You’ve Always Wanted To Do Think about it this way: This is your last month at Emory, maybe your last month in Atlanta. There is no judgement anymore. The only thing holding you back is you.

Walk the whole of the Beltline. Ask out that girl who you’ve always pined for, or find the guy of your dreams and have a short and tragic romance. Drink at every bar in Atlanta in one night and then throw up at every bar in Atlanta the next morning. Eat at all the great restaurants; worrying about money is for when you have a job.

Live dammit! LIVE! Get Excited I know that this time can be scary. You’re gonna have the rug pulled out from under you. But that’s okay. Because here’s the secret: The real world is even better than college.

I know, it doesn’t seem like it will be. But you’re now the master of your own destiny. You control the path in front of you. It’s as small as being able to eat a whole ice cream cake for dinner, and it’s as huge as being able to pay your own way through life and achieving financial independence.

That degree will finally be put to use. People will actually respect you rather than simply pretending to respect you (as they do now).

It’s gonna be okay. Sure, there will be new responsibilities. But there will be so much more on top of that.

So, SS, don’t freak the geek out. Your impact on Emory, just like myself, will always stay.

Sure, you’re leaving something behind.

But it’s so you can become a real person with real friends in a real world who maybe isn’t responsible for the dying lawns of Decatur homes.

mory’s softball team (32-4) went 4-0 this past weekend on their road trip to Memphis, Tenn., with junior pitcher Brittany File winning all four of the decisions to make her record 28-2 on the year. Emory topped Southwestern University (Texas) 4-3 and Rhodes College (Tenn.) 5-0 on Saturday. The team again defeated Southwestern 8-3 and Rhodes 8-1 on Sunday.

In the opener on Saturday against Southwestern, a single by junior second baseman Amy Wray in the bottom of the eighth inning plated freshman pinch runner Kelsey Alexander with the winning run. Senior center fielder Alyssa Pollard and junior left fielder Taylor Forte paced Emory’s 13-hit attack, each going three for four in the game. Pollard scored a pair of runs, while Forte scored once and drove in one run. In addition, freshman right fielder Sam Vincent collected four hits in all four of her plate appearances. Freshman Jessica MacWilliams got the start and struggled early on, giving up three runs in two innings. File got the win in relief, taking over in the third and finishing the game. File allowed three hits, no runs and struck out 12.

In the second game of the day, Emory faced off against Rhodes, winning 5-0. File tossed a three-hit shutout while striking out ten, and Wray knocked in three runs to help Emory get the win. Wray turned in a three-for-three effort at the plate, including a pair of RBI doubles, for her fifth multi-hit performance of the year. Emory picked up all the runs it would need in the top of the second when it scored twice, the first run coming across the plate when Wray singled in Vincent. Wray then scored following a single by freshman third baseman Emmeryn Wheelan.

In the first game on Sunday, Emory topped Southwestern 8-3 without striking out a single time. File once again got the start and went the first five and two-thirds innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 11. Pollard and senior shortstop Melody Carter both homered in the game to bring home six of Emory’s runs on the day. They each collected a pair of hits on the day as well.

The final game of the weekend saw Emory take on and defeat Rhodes, this time by a score of 8-1. Carter allowed the Eagles to easily cruise to a victory, thanks to her four hits, two doubles, home run and six RBIs. Wray also managed two hits, including a double. File once again took the mound to start, her fourth appearance of the weekend, and she did not disappoint. She tossed six shutout innings, allowing three hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts. That performance was good enough for her 28th win of the year.

he top-ranked Emory’s women’s tennis team (18-3) suffered an upset at the hands of Middlebury College (Vt.) this weekend but rebounded to beat Skidmore College (N.Y.) and Bowdoin College (Maine) the following days.

On Friday, April 15, the Eagles fell to Middlebury 5-4 despite being up 4-3 going into the last two singles matches of the contest.

The team of sophomore Anna Fuhr and freshman Daniela Lopez could not overcome their competition, losing their No. 1 doubles match 8-6. The squad of sophomore Bridget Harding and junior Katarina Su, however, rebounded with their eighth straight doubles victory, winning 9-7 in their No. 2 matchup. In the No. 3 doubles matchup, the team of juniors Michelle Satterfield and Paula Castro could not prevail, losing 9-8.

Harding was defeated in heart-breaking fashion in a third set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in her No. 1 singles court matchup. Satterfield (6-1, 6-2) and freshman Taylor Cosme (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) were both able to prevail in their No. 2 and No. 3 singles courts, respectively.

Senior Beatrice Rosen lost her No. 4 singles match 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in a similar manner, Harding in the third set. Su lost her singles matchup 6-3, 6-0 in her No. 5 singles court. Senior Madison Gordon prevailed 6-2, 6-0 in her No. 6 singles court. “[Middlebury] played very well,” Gordon said. “It

definitely gave us the opportunity to look and see what our weakest points are in order to improve them for nationals.”

The following afternoon, the Eagles rebounded to blank Skidmore 9-0.

The same doubles teams played in Saturday afternoon’s match, but they fared much better in their results. The team of Fuhr and Lopez won 8-4 in their No. 1 doubles court match, the team of Harding and Su won 8-1 in their No. 2 doubles court and the team of Satterfield and Castro won 8-0 in their No. 3 doubles court.

Like the doubles pairings, the six singles competitors rebounded in a big way against the Thoroughbreds.

Harding won 6-1, 6-2 on the No. 1 singles court, and Satterfield won her No. 2 singles court 7-6 (3), 6-1.

Cosme and Rosen each won 6-3, 6-2 on their No. 3 and No. 4 singles courts, respectively. Gordon won 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 5 singles court and Castro won 6-2, 6-1 on the No. 6 singles court.

The next afternoon, Sunday, April 18, the Eagles continued their dominance, beating No. 6 Bowdoin 8-1.

Fuhr and Lopez dropped the No. 1 doubles court 8-2 for the only game lost for the Eagles on the afternoon, but the teams of Su and Harding and Castro and Satterfield rebounded in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles courts, respectively, winning both of their matches with ease.

doubles match together.

“We’re feeling really good right now and our dynamic is getting us through these matches right now,” Harding said. “Her and I have a really good relationship on and off the court.”

Harding won the No. 1 singles court 4-6, 6-2, 6-4; Satterfield won the No. 2 singles court 6-0, 6-1; Cosme won the No. 3 singles court 6-1, 6-2; Rosen won the No. 4 singles court 6-0, 6-2; Gordon won the No. 5 singles court 6-3, 6-1; and Castro won the No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-3.

“I feel really confident in our team right now, but I’m glad we have a week of practice before our conference tournament to tighten up some loose strings,” Gordon said.

After all three days of play, Rosen moved into a tie for sixth place all time in Emory’s history with 78 overall singles wins. Gordon tied an Emory wins record, too, with current Head Coach Amy Bryant, for ninth place all time with 76 overall singles wins.

“I don’t really keep tabs on my wins, but it’s personally an amazing accomplishment,” Gordon said. “Coach Bryant was an outstanding athlete at Emory, and I’m honored to be up there with her.”

Emory is now 20-4 on the year. The team will compete next at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Orlando, Fla. on Friday, April 22.

mory’s men’s and women’s track and field teams continued their outdoor season last weekend at the Mount Laurel Invitational, hosted

by Sewanee: The University of the South (Tenn.). The women’s squad continued their strong run of form by winning the meet, their fourth consecutive first place team finish, while the Emory men came in third.

The meet served as the final tune-up before next weekend’s University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in St. Louis, Mo. With one of the season’s most important meets on the horizon, Emory Head Coach John Curtin commented on what the meet meant for the team.

“We didn’t run a lot of top level kids and some had an opportunity to race in events that they haven’t ran regularly this season,” Curtin said. “It was a really good night for several people.”

Curtin went on to discuss the competition at the meet.

“The competition [was] not as tough as we’ve been seeing,” he said. “The purpose was to get ‘meet-ready’ for the UAA

Championships in St. Louis next weekend.”

The women’s team tallied eight first place finishes, as well as a win in the 4x100m relay at Mount Laurel. Freshman Dilys Osei led the way with victories in the 200m dash and 100m hurdles. Her times of 25.32 and 15.04 were both season bests. Osei was also a member of the winning 4x100m relay team which posted a time of 47.83, also a season best. The other members of the team were fellow freshman Dani Bland, sophomore Julia Leventhal and senior Alexandra Aiello.

Bland also won the 100m dash with a time of 12.44. Bland credited her performance to staying calm.

“I tend to do my best when I don’t put a lot of pressure on myself and i just have fun with it,” Bland said of her race.

Sophomore Michelle Kagei won the 3000m run with a time of 11:00.23, and freshman Hayley Moyer finished the 400m hurdles in 1:08.82 to take first place.

Junior Mia Eisenhandler continued to work her way back from an injury with a win in the 3,000m steeplechase. Her time

of 12:01.03 was a personal best. Curtin shared his excitement about Eisenhandler’s performance. “[Eisenhandler’s] first race back looked really strong, and now we know she will be ready for the UAA meet, which was one thing we needed to learn at Sewanee,” Curtin said.

Sophomore Valerie Linck added a first place finish in the field events in the high jump; her mark of 1.60m was also a season high. Freshman Kaleena Jesson finished second in the pole vault with a height of 3.05m.

of 1:58.00. Junior Michael McBane won the 1,500m race, crossing the finish line with a mark of 4:05.20. Sophomores Shane Sullivan and Benjamin Rogin took first in the 3,000m run and 110m

hurdles, respectively. Sullivan won with a time of 8:45.59, while Rogin posted a time of 15.17. Curtin labeled freshman Zachary Lembersky as a “real standout” at the meet. His discus throw of 41.61m was a personal best and earned him first place.

The team’s focus will now shift to the UAA Championships, which will be the final meet of the season for many of the team’s athletes who do not qualify for the national meet. Curtin made it clear that the team sees this meet as one of the most important for the outdoor season.

“Next to the National Championship, the UAA is our ‘big deal,’ ” Curtin said.

“This is what people have aimed for and worked toward all year.”

Curtin went on further to share that while expectations are high, the team understands the difficult task at hand.

“We need good performances from everyone,” he said. “We have some kids that are top-ranked in UAA that we anticipate will continue to perform at that level, and we need kids that aren’t there yet to step up and fill some voids. The UAA this year is just loaded top to bottom. The quality of the conference has gone up.”

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24, when they travel to St. Louis, Mo., to compete in the UAA Championships.

Bland believes that the key to success at UAAs is to continue to build on their training.

“If we can cash in on our training and continue doing what we’ve practiced then we should perform well,” Bland said.

mory’s baseball team (27-8) took on Georgia Gwinnett College (42-4) April 15, falling to the Grizzlies 14-3. Coach Mike Twardoski said that although the outcome was disappointing, the game can still help the team succeed.

“Georgia Gwinnett is a great team — they’re No. 1 in the NAIA [National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics],” Twardoski said. “We got a chance to put a lot of guys in to see some great hitting and pitching.”

Junior pitcher Andrew Doetsch echoed his coach’s sentiment.

“Georgia Gwinnett is one of the best teams in the NAIA,” Doetsch said. “Just playing against the best prepares us for the rest of the season and post-season, which is always our goal.”

inning outing. Merolla allowed five runs, three of which were earned. Merolla gave up five hits and four walks, while striking out three. The team of four relievers who closed out the game for Emory had a hard time containing Georgia Gwinnett, as well.

Sophomores Rhett Stuart, Danny Kerning and Mack Wilkins, as well as junior Andrew Doetsch each pitched one inning to finish the game. Stuart allowed five runs and Doetsch allowed two, while Kerning and Wilkins allowed a single run each.

At the plate, Emory managed to collect only four hits total. Left fielder Wilson Morgan and third baseman Philip Maldari, both juniors, as well as and left fielder David Draper and first baseman Sam Brzowski, both freshmen, each recorded one hit. Morgan, Draper and Maldari also drove in an RBI each. The team struck out 11 times and drew only four walks in the game.

Twardoski was especially impressed the plate appearances of the two freshmen in the bunch.

“They [Draper and Brzowski] haven’t gotten a lot of at-bats, so it’s hard to get your timing down,” Twardoski said. “To come in off the bench and get hits off a guy throwing 90 [miles per hour] is really good.”

The Eagles will return to action Tuesday, April 19, when they travel across town to take on Oglethorpe University (Ga.) (19-20). Junior pitcher Jackson Weeg (6-0, 1.97 ERA) is planned to start Tuesday night’s game. Twardoski said that a fierce attitude could lead the Eagles to victory.

“I really want to see us come out and play with a chip on our shoulder after dropping a home game to [Oglethorpe] last week,” Twardoski said. “I think that could give us an edge in the game.”

Emory now has four regular season games remaining on the year. When asked about how to finish the season strong, Doetsch said the key is staying healthy and consistent .

“We need to maintain the current level of play we have, if not improve on it,” Doetsch said. “We need to continue to get consistent starts from our staff and keep capitalizing at the plate and the field.”

While previous years have been marked by spotlights on Emory’s hospital, academics or admissions, this year the news has centered around the raw emotion and action of daily campus life. Beginning with an exploration of former President Jimmy Carter’s connection to campus following his August 2015 cancer diagnosis all the way to the national spotlight caused by the Donald Trump chalkings and subsequent protests on campus, here’s a look at the biggest news of the year.

After President Carter’s cancer announcement, the Wheel staff took a deep dive into Carter’s legacy, impact and relationship with Emory’s campus. At the opening of the semester, new identity spaces and living arrangements took hold, from the Centro Latino in the Dobbs University Center (DUC) to themed housing on Eagle Row. In October, shockwaves rippled through both Emory campuses after Oxford College sophomore Emily Sakamoto used anonymous social media app Yik Yak to post a shooting threat to the Oxford campus.

Towards the end of the semester, the University announced the beginning of the search to replace outgoing University President James W. Wagner, who said earlier in September that he would be stepping down in August 2016. A protest of the racial climate on campus occurred on Nov. 11, during which students blocked Clifton Road and released a number of demands to the administration.

In February, activists and administration alike sat down to report on progress made from earlier demands at the Racial Justice Retreat.

As students and administrators continued to meet throughout the beginning of 2016, every candidate for major student government positions included major talking points on diversity and inclusivity in their platforms.

A new issue arose in mid-March when someone anonymously covered the campus with chalk reading “Trump 2016” and other similar messages. After coverage of students protesting and meeting with President Wagner were picked up nationally, an intense firestorm of scrutiny, debate and vicious internet commentary descended upon our campus. Add in an appearance by controversial Breitbart Tech Editor Milo Yiannopoulos (complete with counter chalking), and you had the recipe for a contentious stretch of weeks. Chalk this year up to an environment of many competing voices all being heard at once and the campus attempting to deal with the cacophony.

jacob.j.durst@emory.edu The bottom line: it’s been a great year for Emory sports, with our teams achieving an impressive amount of University Athletic Association (UAA) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) success. However, the women’s swimming and diving team left Emory’s other teams in the dust.

The accolades began piling up in February, when the Eagles won their 18th consecutive UAA title. The Eagles racked up 2,015 points, nearly 700 more than the second place team from Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.). After four days of events at the 29th Annual UAA Championships, Emory women finished with 19 total championships, 10 UAA records and 45 All-UAA certificates. In addition, the coaching staff was awarded their third straight UAA Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year.

That was only the beginning.

At the NCAA Division III Championship in March, the Eagles claimed their seventh consecutive NCAA title. Their total score of 560 was almost 100 points ahead of second place Kenyon College (Ohio). The title came with six event national championships, two school records and one Division III record. On the individual side, the Eagles collected 24 All-American honors and 15 All-American honorable mentions. The team couldn’t have accomplished it all without Head Coach Jon Howell, who was named College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year.

All things considered, it was a pretty good year for our women’s swimming and diving team.

Never fear. Real pizza can be found at Downtown Decatur’s Sapori di Napoli, where the waiters (okay, some of them) speak Italian, where Italian television foods such as Fettuccine Alfredo.

“But I like Fettuccine Alfredo!”

You will like this stuff better. Start with Frittatine di Pasta (because what could be better than fried Ital-­ ian-­style macaroni and cheese?), and then try a simple yet delicious margherita pizza with buffalo mozzarella and San Marzano tomato sauce. If you’re in the mood for pasta, you can’t go wrong with Tagliatelle alla Sor-­ rentina with tomato sauce and eggplant.

In other words, you can’t go wrong with Sapori di Napoli, which is both authentic and delicious.

If you dine in at the restaurant, you can expect quick service
