Sororities and fraternities reflect on revamped recruitment process as they welcome new brothers and sisters to Greek life.

didn’t know what to expect, and I was not expecting what happened,” College freshman Samantha Korn said about her recruitment and bid day experience. “Knowing that my new sorority sisters would be waiting for me was surreal.”

This spring, 459 women and 340 men participated in formal sorority and fraternity recruitment. Of those, 313 women received bids to one of Emory’s seven Panhellenic chapters and 230 men were invited to join at least one of the University’s 11 established fraternities.

While the total number of men participating in the Interfraternity Council (IFC) recruitment is on par with that of previous years, Business School senior and IFC President Taylor McNair said that the retention rate of potential new members choosing to accept their bids was significantly lower this year, with only 151 new members across Emory’s thirteen fraternity chapters.

Emory Panhellenic Council (EPC) recruitment numbers have also dwindled since last year, when over 500 women participated in formal recruitment.

Changes in EPC College senior and EPC Vice President of Recruitment Adrian Rabin attributed the decrease in participation to recently implemented EPC programming, which includes more guidance from Pi Chis, sorority women who disaffiliate themselves from their chapters before recruitment to mentor potential new members throughout the process.

Although the Pi Chi program has been used for a few years, the Pi Chis are now trained extensively to help those going through the process with the stresses that can be a part of it. Rabin said that Pi Chis “helped potential members think realistically about the type of commitment involved in joining a sorority and to decide whether this really was something they were ready to do.”

Along with changes to the Pi Chi program, College senior and EPC President Olivia Czufin mentioned that this year, EPC made an intentional attempt “to reduce the frills” of recruitment to ensure that the potential new member decisions are focused on values rather than decora-

tions.

Czufin added that due to the success of these changes, she expects that more changes will be implemented next year.

Rabin also noticed that many women withdrew from EPC recruitment so that they would be eligible to participate in populating Emory’s first chapter of Pi Beta Phi, a new sorority which plans to colonize on campus this February.

Weather complications also affected formal sorority recruitment this year, as EPC had to reschedule two days of rush, thus postponing the entire process by a week, because of the administrative decision that EPC should not hold University-sanctioned events on days when the University is officially closed.

“It was stressful,” Emory Director of the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life Marlon Gibson said. “Stressful for EPC, stressful for advisors, stressful for women in the chapters, especially those that had activities planned for last Sunday.”

Because bid day was pushed back, potential new members had to wait an extra week to find out their ultimate placements. “The waiting was so intense this

year,” College freshman Rebecca Bowles said. However, she added, “bid day was a tiring whirlwind of excitement and introductions, but well worth the stress and sore throats that recruitment brought with it.”

Additionally, Gibson said that some sorority chapters had to attempt to get funding back for events that they had planned for bid day before the date got moved.

Changes in IFC Last year, IFC introduced a significant logistical difference in its recruitment process: formal spring recruitment was to be divided into two halves. This year, the first round of recruitment took place over the course of two nights in November and the final rounds ended this past weekend.

This change was implemented to increase recruitment participation numbers and to expose potential new members to more chapters for a longer period of time, according to McNair.

“The hope is that both rushees and chapters themselves have the opportu-

02.03.16 xx.xx.2015 nity to meet people during the November rounds and spend more of the semester getting to know each other,” he wrote in an email to the Wheel. He said that this is a positive development, because most new members only interacted with fraternity brothers during rush week, and were only given a few days to receive a bid in the past.

McNair said he considers the change to be effective because an additional 60 students signed up for IFC recruitment between November and January this year.

Gibson also noted an increased interest in unhoused fraternities, such as Sigma Alpha Mu. “We promoted them a lot this year, so I think that paid off,” he said. “We worked hard to make sure people knew who they were.”

As a result of fewer bids and fewer housed fraternities, fewer men will join the Greek system than normally do. McNair said that the main improvements IFC needs to focus on include marketing Greek Life to the general Emory population and promoting the new split recruitment scheduling. He also hopes to continue to work with individual chapters to improve their retention rates and to increase the number of overall bids given out.

Recruitment Experience Czufin emphasized that the recruitment process should not be thought of in terms of statistics. “[Sorority] recruitment aims to introduce potential new members to women in chapters in a values-based environment that facilitates meaningful conversations and helps the potential new members find a chapter that is right for them,” she wrote.

She said that the process is highly individualistic. Over the course of the four days of formal recruitment, chapters and potential new members are matched up in rounds of a mutual selection process. “We al-

5 ways encourage each potential new member to maximize their options and keep their minds open,” Czufin wrote in an email to the Wheel. “We find that, while women enter the process with a specific chapter in mind, they often find their place in a house they did not expect to like.”

Bowles agreed. While she did not intend to join a sorority when she came to Emory, she decided to give it a chance, and said she was swayed by the intimacy of the recruitment experience.

“It was nerve-racking to talk with so many different people, but through the days I got to have some really great conversations with women who really changed how I viewed Greek life,” she said.

Nonetheless, some students did not participate in recruitment because they found fault in the very nature of the process. College freshman Laura Briggs decided not to rush because she believes that the process is rooted in the unfounded principle that it is possible to get to know a person in just a few minutes, she wrote in an email to the Wheel.

“Prospective members of Greek organizations who are nervous and exhausted during rush are herded from one superficial conversation to the next while each member judges their character,” Briggs wrote.

“It encourages an unhealthy level of conformity and superficiality.”

Furthermore, some students reported that they received bids through the online portal used throughout the IFC recruitment process, when it had not been intended for them to receive bids from the respective fraternities. “I was so excited to get a bid. It was a dream of mine,” said a freshman who participated in IFC recruitment. “I was heartbroken.”

At least a few such cases have been confirmed.

“Guys who came to the Thursday round showed up as if

they were to receive a bid on Friday,” Zeta Beta Tau Chapter President and College sophomore Daniel Elchediak said.

Concerns Alpha Tau Omega Chapter President and College junior Hugh McGlade expressed his concern over the homogeneity of the IFC fraternities. “If the IFC hopes to be a meaningful and worthwhile part of the Emory community, its leaders and its members must figure out how to make the groups and spaces more welcoming, safe and inclusive,” he wrote in an email to the Wheel.

Briggs said that Greek organizations discourage diversity by creating environments where similarly-minded people, the large majority of whom are white, are living and socializing together, isolated from the general population.

“On a campus like Emory’s, where the population is extremely diverse, it is no longer acceptable to have one token Asian in a sorority and claim diversity,” she wrote.

While many students have positive experienc-

es with recruitment and Greek life, the recruitment process in general, “perpetuate a cycle of privilege and elitism that is completely ignored by the members, who are more focused on their next date party or newest piece of Greek merchandise to stop and look around at what’s wrong in the picture,” Briggs wrote.

However, Emory’s Greek system has been taking active steps towards addressing this problem, according to Czufin.

“This is … an area where we are constantly evolving, improving and growing, demonstrated by our willingness to openly attend and take feedback from the meeting Feminists in Action hosted last year about the [Wheel editorial: ‘Sorority recruitment disempowers women’],” she wrote.

While it was difficult to derive any tangibles from the theoretical conversation, “No process is perfect, but we strive to be as inclusive, open, and flexible as possible,” Czufin wrote.

A

fter months of research, planning and compiling an extraordinary record, the debate team of College senior Jason Sigalos and College junior Viveth Karthikeyan swept away the top six collegiate teams in the nation at the 60th Dartmouth Round Robin on Jan. 23 to 24 – considered by the debate community to be the most difficult and prestigious of the season.

Sigalos’ and Karthikeyan’s team represented Emory’s Barkley Forum Center for Debate Education, which is comprised of students who participate in competitions, community outreach or campus engagement and are unified by their appreciation for inquiry-driven conversation, according to its website. The team was invited to participate in the annual, invitation-only tournament, which welcomed

only the top seven collegiate debate teams to compete in a Round Robin style debate.

Along with Emory, teams from Harvard University, University of California at Berkeley, Georgetown University, Wake Forest University, Michigan State University and University of Kentucky were selected based on their records in regional and national tournaments throughout the year.

This year, teams debated the pros and cons of the topic: The United States should significantly reduce its military presence in various parts of the world.

“Emory has been one of the more successful programs over the years,” said John Turner, director of the Dartmouth Forensic Union debate team. “It’s actually tied with our school for the largest number

of wins [at this tournament] since 1993 [when the Round Robin style was introduced]. The [students] are a part of a legacy of great success.”

Both Turner and James Herndon, Barkley Forum director of debate programs and debate coach at Emory, said the tournament was as competitive as any they had seen.

As a primary argument coach, Herndon’s job was to help Sigalos and Karthikeyan plan their arguments and strategies for the tournaments.

“We … were given the opportunity to prepare very specifically for those six debates,” Herndon wrote in an email to the Wheel, “so winning them all is a real accomplishment.”

The debaters left with similar sentiments. Sigalos, an Alben W. Barkley scholar at Emory, said that the wait for the results at the tournament was especially nerve-wracking.

“This is the first kind of big thing I’ve won since being at Emory, and it has been about three and a half years in the making,” Sigalos said. “It feels nice to see the culmination of several years of work pay off.”

Though he values the success of the team at Dartmouth, Ed Lee, senior director of debate at Emory, said that the Barkley Forum and debate in general reach for greater goals.

“I’d like to think that what we provide is the essence of a liberal arts education – providing students the ability to talk about various frames and understandings of the world, from the environment to the economy to politics to social issues,” Lee said. “It’s truly a multi-disciplinary way of thinking about and engaging the world.”

Herndon agreed with Lee, stressing the importance of “dialoguing and deliberating about salient and controversial issues on campus” to create a climate of open expression.

“Yes, we have students that are some of the best debaters in the country,” Herndon said. “But, we also have space for people who just want to argue with each other, learn what debate is, push themselves towards argumentative competition or anything else.”

Turner, who accepted the job as director of the Dartmouth Forensic Union debate team last year, worked with Sigalos and Karthikeyan when he was the associate director of debate at Emory. He agreed with Herndon and supported the Barkley Forum’s mission.

“Debate tends to be a pretty close world as-is,” he said. “But I also have a special love for the Barkley Forum and the people who were there and debate there, so … it was good to see [Sigalos and Karthikeyan’s] work pay off in such an intense environment.”

Aquinas Center of Theology hosts death penalty debate Emily Sullivan | News Editor

E

mory’s Aquinas Center of Theology pitted two capital punishment experts against each other during a lively but lighthearted debate on Monday, Feb. 1 in the Emory Law School Tull Auditorium.

Emory Associate Professor of Philosophy Michael Sullivan moderated the debate, which he said was intended to initiate dialogue, establish a common truth and introduce new perspectives.

“We must love them both: those whose opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject,” Sullivan said while introducing the two debaters.

John Malcolm, director of the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, argued in favor of the death penalty, and Phillip M. Thompson, executive director of the Aquinas Center of Theology, argued against it.

Malcolm invited Thompson to the debate in response to an opinion article Thompson had written in the spring for The Wall Street Journal.

This debate also occurred two days prior to the scheduled execution of Brandon Astor Jones, who had been waiting on Georgia’s death row since 1979, according to Thompson. Jones had not yet been executed by print time.

Proponent “Reasonable people can and do disagree about whether we should have a death penalty,” Malcolm said. “I do believe that it is a very solemn cast. Executing another human being is a sober, grim affair.”

However, the darkness of the punishment hasn’t been enough to sway Malcolm. Currently, 31 U.S. states and many countries use the death penalty, he said.

The penalty is constitutional except in exceptional circumstances: when killers are minors or severely mentally impaired, he added.

“The majority of [Americans] favor capital punishment in [reasonable] circumstances,” Malcolm said. He added that the death penalty is important to society for the sake of retribution, in which case a sense of justice is given to afflicted families when “no other punishment is sufficient.”

Malcolm also argued that the death penalty can prevent families from the pain of constantly enduring hearings when the criminal is up for parole.

Malcolm added that capital punishment deters people from committing crimes such as murder. When people see the death penalty actually carried out, “would-be murderers” are essentially scared away, he said. He cited an Emory study, which he recognized was not completely conclusive but indicated that 18 fewer murders occurred with each execution.

Malcolm also noted that “end of life costs,” which provide the financial foundation for murderers sentenced to life in prison, have reached an as-

tounding $4 million since the beginning of the decade.

“I think we, as a society, need not feel guilty about this enterprise,” he said. “[The death penalty] is a degradation that was self-inflicted.”

Opponent Thompson argued the converse.

“Reasonable people, like John said, can definitely disagree on this matter,” he said. “I was once pro-death penalty.”

Now, he considers the system plagued by human error and inequality, he said.

“We’re never going to have a perfect death penalty system in which innocent people are not executed,” Thompson said. “If you’re going to have the death penalty, you don’t want it to be disproportionate.”

Thompson said that most African American and Hispanic people oppose the death penalty because they believe that the system works in favor of rich white citizens, especially those who can afford the lawyers with the most admirable track records.

Thompson also noted that many countries in Europe and the Americas have done away with the death penalty. “We will join North Korea, China and Saudi Arabia,” he said, referring to a situation in which the United States continues to recognize the legality of the death penalty.

Although counter intuitive, carrying out the death penalty is more expensive than keeping someone in prison for life, according to Thomp-

son. “That is just a very unnatural human action,” he added. “Once you kill them, there is no going back.”

The Audiences Response A question and answer session allowed for the debaters to elaborate on their positions. The session initiated several smaller debates in which questions of murder prevention through education and morality arose, and Malcolm said that the death penalty can balance the moral equilibrium.

After the session, Sullivan thanked both debaters and gave each a gracious pat on the back. Audra Pagano, a leader for Respect Life Ministry (RLM) at the Cathedral of Christ the King, and Sofia Bork, a volunteer for RLM, both of whom were in the audience, agreed that Thompson clearly won the debate. “[Malcolm] used more of a pathosbased approach,” Bork said. “He got you more riled up.”

Pagano and Bork said that Thompson exhibited exceptional knowledge of the death penalty and its implications in his arguments. They added that Malcolm came across as slightly condescending.

However, they also agreed that both debaters thoroughly explored the topics and left the audience well-informed.

Questions regarding the constitutionality and humaneness of the death penalty lingered after the debate and will likely be discussed in the future. “We’ve had a lot of time to change [the penal structure] and make it a better system,” Thompson said. “But we haven’t.”

worldwide study of kidney transplant patients has indicated that belatacept, a drug that two Emory researchers helped develop, has led to increased transplant patient survival rates, according to a Jan. 27 University press release.

Emory School of Medicine Dean and Professor of Surgery Christian Larsen and University of California, San Francisco, transplant specialist Flavio Vincenti headed the study, which was published in the Jan. 28 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The study concluded that belatacept is effective because it helps control the immune system and prevent the body from rejecting new organs. The risk of loss of the transplanted kidney or death after seven years was 12.7 percent for belatacept, compared to 21.7 percent for cyclosporine A, another commonly used immunosuppressant drug.

Emory Transplant Center Executive Director Thomas Pearson worked with Larsen to create the drug, which the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved in 2011.

“In the early 2000s, Tom and I helped design and conduct the first trials [of the drug] in kidney transplant patients,” Larsen said. “Belatacept has lived up to our hopes in some ways but not in others. The most important benefits are better patient and transplant survival.”

He continued by explaining that belatacept did not live up to the researchers’ expectations because patients experience a higher rate of acute kidney rejection, which is reversible, Larsen said.

Pearson said that the previous go-to solutions for kidney transplant patients were calcineurin inhibitors, which correlated with a variety of side effects that include “toxicity to the kidney, high blood pressure and diabetes contributing to an increased rate of cardiovascular disease,” he said.

Long-term use of calcinuerin inhibitors could impair the transplanted kidneys and cause cardiovascular disease and diabetes, he added.

Belatacept does not appear to cause any of those effects, Vincenti said.

Nonetheless, belatacept has its own risks, including an increased susceptibility to certain cancers, the researchers said.

he Italian restaurant, Double Zero Napoletana, will replace Ink and Elm in Emory Village early this summer, according to a Jan. 28 Atlanta Business Chronicle article.

Double Zero is currently located in Sandy Springs, according to the Chronicle. However, the restaurant’s current property was sold and, under the supervision of the Castellucci Hospitality Group, it will relocate to pursue a new atmosphere. A self-proclaimed “contemporary southern Italian restaurant” that specializes in handmade pasta and pizza dishes, Double Zero is expected to open at its Emory Village location in June.

“As part of the move, Double Zero plans to revamp its menu with new small plates and larger, shareable dishes,” according to the Chronicle.

Double Zero’s current executive chef, Edwin Molina, will continue to work with the restaurant at its new location.

ith Emory University’s endowment remaining constant at $6.7 billion, the University’s endowment market value has dropped to 17th in the nation out of the 812 U.S. colleges and universities surveyed for the 2015 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments (NCSE) for the 2015 fiscal year.

Emory’s Vice President of Investments and Chief Investment Officer Mary Cahill attributed the constancy to the decline in the University’s investment market performance.

Typically, a university’s endowment consists of hundreds of individual funds that target gifts for a variety of purposes, including student scholarships, financial aid, professorships and new facilities, according to the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO).

Colleges across the country also saw their endowment investment return rates fall to the lowest level since 2012, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Undocumented students and allies protest education policy Anwesha Guha | News Editor

n response to the Georgia Supreme Court ruling prohibiting undocumented Georgian students from access to in-state tuition, around 30 documented and undocumented students from schools across the nation, including Emory, organized a sit-in at Georgia State University to protest the policy.

The protesters specifically condemned the presidents of University of Georgia, Georgia State University and Georgia Institute of Technology for barring undocumented students from attending their universities due to the current policy

that prohibits the top five public universities from admitting undocumented students. The policy also denies these students in-state tuition at all Georgia public schools.

After 15 hours of protesting, eight students – four undocumented students from Freedom University and four documented allies from other colleges in the area – were arrested at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

These students were charged with trespassing and taken to Fulton County Jail, according to a Freedom University press release.

POLICE REPORT scene, they met with the chapter president and another fraternity member.

The member said he left his backpack in an open area and when he returned, his 13-inch laptop and a calculus book inside the backpack were doused in alcohol. Multiple pages were ripped from the textbook and the laptop was torn in half along the hinge. There are no suspects at this time.

On Feb. 1 at 12:50 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding an unattended animal in a car at the Woodruff Residential Center. The car was parked in a shady spot with the windows open and the dog appeared to be distressed, according to the complainant.

When the owner returned and met with officers, he said he had to leave the dog in the car for 15 minutes for an appointment. The individual was allowed to leave the area.

On Jan. 31 at 11:25 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding the scent of marijuana on the first floor of Raoul Hall. When officers arrived on the scene, a student gave them a Ziploc bag filled with a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana. Officers issued a citation to the student in possession of the substance and notified campus life.

On Jan. 30 at 8 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding a noise complaint at the Clairmont CRC. The CRC director called EPD because the noise violations were an ongoing issue. Officers met with an individual in an apartment at the CRC and told them to keep the noise down.

On Feb. 2 at 4:07 p.m., a student contacted EPD regarding a suspicious phone call. The student received a call from an individual claiming to work for the IRS. The caller had a thick Indian accent and claimed the student owed $1,900. The student hung up the phone and contacted DeKalb County Police Department.

Each and every person that makes up our Emory community is a potential writer for the Wheel’s Opinion section. It is only through widespread community participation that we can achieve the platform of expression that our community deserves.

A desire to be heard and a willingness to work to develop and articulate one’s arguments in a journalistic framework based on research are the primary requirements for this section.

Education is a right, not an obstacle Erin Penney | College Senior |

t first, I was intrigued by the headline “The Alternative to Free Tuition.” In our fairly progressive college community, what answer did the Wheel editorial board have to the problem of the class gap in education?

The skewed system we already have.

I can certainly see where Bernie Sanders’ plan for free tuition is too pie-in-the-sky for the nation at this moment. It would take years, perhaps even decades, to achieve something this ambitious.

In addition, I certainly agree that upper-class families who can afford college costs should foot their own bill so that there is enough money in the coffers to cover those who need financial aid. However, the Editorial Board’s opinion of how financial aid operates at colleges is a bit too rosy. In their opinion, “There is a reason for selective pricing at American universities and for the ‘expected family contribution’ component of financial aid applications. Wealthier students cover the costs of the lower income students.” If the system was perfect, this would be true. However, lower- and middle-income students have an expected family contribution to cover too, and it’s not always affordable for them. In fact, a student’s actual college cost may be higher than their expected family contribution (which could already be difficult for them to afford). According to Justin Draeger, President and CEO of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), “the EFC that tells you nothing. It doesn’t tell you how much you’re going to have to pay ... The whole thing is broken.”

The Editorial Board’s speculation on how free public college tuition would affect private colleges is questionable as well. In their words, “Like private high schools or college preparatory schools, they would likely become enclaves for those who can afford to attend.” I venture to say that the state of class diversity in private colleges would remain more or less the same, if private colleges give lower-to-middle class individuals a reason to attend. The competition created by free or lowered public college tuition would put the onus on private colleges to perform at a higher level, or perhaps even lower their tuition, in order to appeal to students across the socioeconomic spectrum. Students of lower-to-middle income already attend private colleges like Emory, despite public colleges being

much more affordable. Free tuition at public colleges probably would not change this unless private colleges cannot justify their cost with resources that public colleges do not have. As long as fair financial aid is provided to those who need it, there is no reason for private colleges to be worried about becoming irrelevant to a diverse pool of students.

The Editorial Board proposes that “federal and state governments use measures of academic performance, such as GPA, to ensure that students take full advantage of need-based aid.” The implication of this is that students who need financial aid need to work harder than those who don’t. While I’m all for making sure that the funds go to those who work hard and deserve it, the achievement-based criteria that exist now actually tend to benefit upper class students who have more resources than lower-to-middle class students who may go to lower quality schools, can’t afford tutoring, have to have a job outside of school, etc. Ability to take full advantage of education is a bit more nuanced than GPA, and all factors should be taken into account when evaluating an applicant. Not to mention, need-based aid is just that — need-based.

This kind of aid is given assuming that the student in question already meets the criteria to attend the institution. It is meant to be a tool to try and level the classism within colleges and universities, not a special award that should be earned through extraordinary measures.

And finally, there is the matter of the Editorial Board’s notion that “Education is not a right, but an obstacle in the pursuit of a higher quality of life.” Sorry, but the United Nations disagrees with you there.

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, “Everyone has the right to education.”

While the price of said education (outside of elementary, which the document states should be free) is debatable within the context of this declaration, the very right to an education is not.

As for education being an “obstacle,” I passionately disagree with you there. If education is an obstacle to you, please feel free to drop out and open up a spot for a student that will actually appreciate it. Perhaps if you saw your family work themselves to the bone to keep you in good schools, you might be a little more grateful for this burdensome education of yours.

With economy back on track, foreign policy is the top priority Pranati Kohli | College Sophomore |

hey say history has a way of repeating itself. And sure enough, following 2008, America must once again prioritize its policy issues. This election year it seems like America’s priority is still the economy, but I believe it is time to bring things into perspective. The American recession officially began in December 2007, when an $8 trillion housing bubble burst. This was followed by a reduction in consumption and chaos, where a total of 8.4 million jobs were lost. And so, the years leading up to the 2008 Presidential Election found the American people looking for a candidate who would guarantee them a secure and booming economy that would ensure jobs to its people. A proponent of New Deal economics, Senator Barack Obama emerged as a champion of the people. His previous voting record in the Senate and his policy of investing in social public services won hearts and votes across the nation.

At the time, the American people rightly prioritized what they expected from their next President: financial security. Accordingly, they made a choice and — according to the numbers — the right one. Economic growth in the second quarter of 2015 outdid other developed nations at 3.7 percent, and during Obama’s presidency the private sector experienced 63 consecutive months of job growth. So now with the 2016 Presidential elections just around the corner, it is up to the American public to again make a choice of candidate who can best address issues significant to them.

Without a doubt, the imbalance in the Middle East poses an imminent risk to the West, and I believe this needs to be dealt with first and foremost, before immigration reform, before the economy and before healthcare reform.

Stability of foreign relations will serve as a precursor to internal growth and prosperity. And I don’t just mean neutralizing or defeating the Islamic State. No — there’s so much more to take into consideration. Let’s begin with oil.

The surge in US oil production parallels a fall in world oil prices, because the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries refuses to reduce its market share by slowing production. Excess supply of oil from both major producers will simply lead to mutually assured destruction of profits in the long run, as both manufacturers cut into each other’s supply share. Furthermore, no one needs to break down how the Middle East poses a threat to democracy itself. Sixteen of the 22 prominent Middle Eastern countries are severely non-democratic, including Egypt, Iraq, Iran and Syria. Four — Lebanon, Kuwait, Morocco and Turkey — are partly or semi-democratic and only two — Israel and Tunisia — can be classified as democratic.

Since long, the President of the United States has enjoyed the privilege of being the “leader of the free world.” So now, when the very fiber on which the free world exists is being threatened, it is time for this leader to stand up and, well … lead.

With a stellar record as First Lady, Senator and finally, Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton may just be the most qualified person for the job. Let me clarify: this is not

an advertisement for Hillary Clinton for America, rather a pragmatic solution. The next President must ensure territorial and national integrity, in the face of terrorist activities, before making any other promises. If the borders of the state are themselves compromised, what good is a low unemployment rate or a higher minimum wage?

So long as Mr. Trump remains the Republican frontrunner, it is pointless discussing the possibility that the Republicans will be able to solve America’s foreign policy problem. But as for the Democratic candidates, the choice lies between Senator Bernie Sanders and Secretary Clinton. While Sanders is a solid candidate and has done an inspirational job with his campaign so far, his foreign policy leaves much to be desired. In all the Democratic debates, he hasn’t adequately answered questions of this nature. The war against ISIS, he said, “must be won primarily by nations in the region — Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan and Iran — which must be prepared to send ground troops into action to defeat Islamic extremists.” His suggestion of a coalition between Iran and Saudi Arabia, countries known to be in opposition to one another, has lead many to believe that he has neither knowledge nor experience in dealing with the region.

On the other hand, Secretary Clinton knows about the global scenario. More than that she is aware of who she is dealing with and knows how to work around obstinate rulers. As Secretary of State, Clinton was actually able to mend Ameri c a’s relat ions w i t h most of its allies, which had been severely weakened after eight years of the Bush administration.

Not only did she do so bilaterally, but she was also able to breathe new life into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Her diplomatic prowess was perfectly demonstrated by the cease-fire between Israel and Palestine that she helped broker in Gaza. Yes, there are discrepancies in her record, big ones.

But her experience of both success and failure will help her enact a better foreign policy in the future. I’m afraid that Sanders’ theatric tone pales in comparison.

Having been in the position before, Clinton recognizes that we live in an interconnected world, one in which no country can live in absolute isolation.

One of her strongest policy agendas is to strengthen alliances and create partnerships for the future. She’s no stranger to the fact that cooperation from the Middle East is required to ensure economic stability within the United States. That is just how the global economy functions. Fluctuation of oil prices or political instability in that region of the world affects the American stock market.

So, these options are laid out: If the people are looking for a leader who can stabilize overseas relations as well as ensure domestic and economic prosperity, Secretary Clinton is the way to go. If domestic policy is in fact all the American people are looking to solve, Senator Sanders will no doubt get the job done.

Harvard’s admissions recommendations are too idealistic Sunidhi Ramesh College Sophomore Johns Creek, Georgia

few weeks ago, Harvard University released a report titled, “Turning the Tide: Inspiring Concern for Others and the Common Good through College Admissions.” In the twenty-six paged document, the renowned institution compiled a list of recommendations intended to help “reduce undue academic pressure” while “redefining achievement.”

It seems like a step in the right direction. For the first time in a long time, a university is taking a stance against unhealthy, competitive educational environments that are familiar to many of us. If Harvard is doing it, many other schools are likely to follow suit. And maybe, with some luck, the admissions process will be less nightmarish than it has been for the past decade.

It seems wonderful; yet, I’m skeptical.

So what exactly are Harvard administrators recommending?

Well, let’s address the problem first. The Harvard report claims that the issue at hand is one that plagues high schools nationwide — a college application process that has students focusing on themselves rather than the people around them.

“Students often perceive colleges as simply valuing their achievements, not their responsibility for others and their communities,” the report states. Furthermore, Harvard recommends that the admissions process should be revised altogether; it should value a concern for the “common good” and “ethical citizenship” over self-furthering endeavors — all while reducing the incredible pressure some high school students face.

The document then lists its recommendations, each categorized under a larger “goal” category.

In writing and on paper, these recommendations seem clear, concise and productive. Yes, the college admissions system is becoming more and more stressful.

Yes, changes need to be made. Yes, most of these recommendations seem to provide decent solutions.

But that is all they are. Recommendations.

And most — if not all — of them would fall short if actually implemented.

On the Recommendations for Community Engagement and Service: This section calls for students to engage in meaningful, sustained community service that develops awareness for diversity and gratitude as well as

a sense of responsibility for the future.

I understand the theory behind this. We want students who are committed to giving back to the community. We want students who will engage and invest in the people around them. But how exactly do you “measure” service and community commitment? How do you compare one student’s dedication to service to another’s?

This is an application process after all. It can and will get to a point where two equivalent students will differ only in the nature of their service commitments. Then how will we pick between them?

Second, doesn’t all of this sound forceful? As if we’re coercing students into taking part in community service not for the sake of personal experience and growth but for the sake of their applications?

And isn’t this oddly similar to the other “suggestions” that colleges have had for us in the past? A simple search of “how to get into Harvard” yields an endless list of these recommendations: “join a sport or a school band,” “participate extensively in a club,” “volunteer in your community,” maintain a high GPA,” “be well rounded.”

Most students know that this isn’t factually representative of what it takes to actually get in. But the Harvard report is more or less suggesting that we add “experiences with diversity” and “demonstrated gratitude” onto the growing stack of expectations for high school teenagers.

On the Recommendations for Assessing Ethical Engagement and Contributions to Others Across Race, Culture, and Class: This portion suggests a need to address students’ contributions outside of the classroom to their families and others in college application questions.

I think this is wonderful in theory. There are so many students who spend an undocumented amount of time on issues surrounding their family lives, and this should be acknowledged in applications. But how does one verify this time committed? And, again, how can you compare one student to another? Is caring for a sick grandmother more relevant than helping out a single mom? Where do you draw the line?

On the Recommendations for Reducing Undue Achievement, Pressure, Redefining Achievement, and

Leveling the Playing Field for Economically Diverse Students: This segment discusses the need to change how high school students’ academic successes are regarded through changes in the SAT/ACT testing system and/or the AP/IB class system. It also demands for college administrations to lessen how higher ranked colleges are viewed and idolized.

These recommendations are ones that I believe are the most important in making strides towards improving the college admissions process. They have the capability to turn around some of the biggest issues as to how both high schools and colleges are currently being viewed and treated. The recommendations address the need to alleviate the many pressures that surround a competitive educational environment.

Diminishing the importance of the SAT, broadening the meaning of a “good college,” encouraging honesty and confidence, reducing the pressure to overload on APs … it all sounds perfect.

But will it work? Have we built up this cutthroat system to a point of no return? Can we really just say that the SAT is no longer important and that APs do not need to be taken in excess and expect parents and students to simply abide? After all, these standards have been held up as the golden standard, engraved into the minds of overachieving students (and their parents) as habit.

And how long will it take for high school students to believe what high-ranked universities have to say? The schools seem to be saying, “Hey, take it easy. You don’t need to drill yourself about your education. Just be a good person and you’re set.”

Is it too late to try to make such large-scale changes?

All in all, I do appreciate Harvard’s report. It is the beginning of a large-scale effort to at least admit the fact that the education system is failing in the admissions sector.

But for now this is all talk — an ideal perspective into making the process better, fairer and calmer, an ideal perspective that is too ideal to effectively play into reality.

Asking for change is one thing. Following through with it and keeping the system afloat is another.

Off to a shaky start

egends of Tomorrow is perhaps the biggest indication of how far the DC CW Universe has come. An interconnected network of shows that began with Arrow and quickly had its whole mythology blown up by the time-traveling, dimension-hopping, psychic-gorillafighting thrill ride that is The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow embraces its comic book roots in a way that none of these shows could have ever dreamed of at their start.

Faced with the threat of immortal madman Vandal Savage (Casper Crump), the greatest threat that Earth has ever faced, Time Master Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) must assemble a collection of heroes to travel through time and space to stop Savage before he can take over and destroy the world.

(Ciara Renee), White Canary (Caity Lotz), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell) and Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) are what Rip gets — a group of ragtag supporting characters from Arrow and The Flash set adrift and asked to become heroes. All of them have either struggled with what heroism means or, in the case of Captain Cold and Heat Wave, never even considered it.

The ultimate charm of Legends of Tomorrow comes from its wholehearted embrace of its comicbook roots and its eager willingness to constantly lean into the soapy and silly melodrama and often barely coherent sci-fi aspects that the show seems eager to borrow from Doctor Who as well as the Silver Age of Comic Books. It’s a show that’s so unceasingly unironic that you can’t help but love what it’s doing.

It’s a show where a young scientist in a shrinking super suit, an old scientist and a young mechanic who fuse together to form a radioactive man, two reincarnated Egyptian lovers with wings and anger issues, a resurrected assassin and two thugs with guns that shoot rays of heat and cold are led by a time-traveling cowboy to fight an immortal Egyptian priest. There’s not an ounce of attempt to go back on or explain these things or make them realistic or “less silly.” The show simply presents their adventures, and you can’t help but smile as it happens.

Legends of Tomorrow is fortunate in that good will because it helps keep the viewer on its side through the shakiness of the pilot. While the show had much of its character legwork done by Arrow and The Flash, the pilot seems less confident in its plot legwork, and spends much of the first episode simply putting the team into place, which ends up dragging down the episode as a whole.

I understand the need for establishment of premise in a pilot — that’s its primary function. But the pilot for Legends of Tomorrow hinges around a central conflict that has no true conflict. The episode asks whether this team will come together on the missions, which of course they will — otherwise, there isn’t a show. One wishes that they had been more willing to lean into the conflict between these disparate heroes rather than the mere assembling of the team.

This leads into the other problem that Legends of Tomorrow seems to face at the current juncture, which is a distinct lack of ideas about its premise.

Arrow and The Flash succeeded because they so quickly announced the central ideals behind their shows.

Arrow is a story about revenge and legacy, and The Flash is a show about trust and the joys and pains of doing the right thing.

But Legends of Tomorrow doesn’t quite have its ideal woven into the fabric of the show yet. Some dialogue thrown towards the idea of second chances and rewriting your history appeared in the pilot, but it isn’t sold, feeling more like exposition and plot than any thematic resonance. It leaves Legends of Tomorrow wandering in search of something to be about, and adds an unfortunate weightlessness to the proceedings as they currently stand.

No more does this show than in the villain the

first episode decides to give us. A silent Boba Fett knock-off named Chronos provides the main antagonistic thrust. Without those thematic resonances, however, he’s just a faceless gun, one the show seems to drop because it’s time for action. Legends of Tomorrow seems more plot-driven than any show from this team in the past. We grew to love Arrow and The Flash because of the characters and the thematic work being done, not necessarily because of the oft weak plotting. Perhaps too many characters and stories in Legends of Tomorrow have moved to that plot-based focus.

That being said, it isn’t as though Legends of Tomorrow is devoid of much of the charm found in its predecessor shows. The characters remain markedly similar to their original incarnations, all of whom were usually the most enjoyable and watchable part of any episode they did. Captain Cold and Heat Wave in particular retain their absolutely amazing scene-chewing nature and excel at keeping things turned up to 11 no matter the situation.

The two particularly shine during a late-episode scene with Caity Lotz’s White Canary, in which they sneak out to a bar in the 70s while the rest of the team is off looking for an expert on villain Vandal Savage, and get into a bar brawl. All three seem to have an effortless and fun chemistry. And it was this moment that showed the potential of the show: characters who have never before interacted in their respective shows in new and exciting locations and situations.

If Legends of Tomorrow can keep that up and add some meaning to it, this one stands the chance of being the most effusive fun DC has created yet.

But as of now, Legends of Tomorrow is going to need a bit of work to stand alongside the rest of the week’s DC television. With a strong cast and unironic love of its premise, though, I believe it can get there.

or those of you unfamiliar with the book and now film Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, it’s fortunately one of the more descriptive titles in literary history. A remix of Jane Austen’s classic story of love, manners and status wherein the zombie apocalypse descends upon the Bennet family, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is the kind of rip-roaring fun that you almost can’t understand until you’ve actually seen it.

Long gestating coming to the silver screen, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies finally hits theaters on Feb. 5. The Wheel participated in a conference call with Lily James (Elizabeth Bennet), Matt Smith (Mr. Collins), Bella Heathcote (Jane Bennet) and Douglas Booth (Mr. Bingley) to discuss what it was like to find love and kill zombies:

Bill Lockie, Western University: Pride and Prejudice is for many people, [it’s] Jane Austen’s magnum opus, and a lot of people will go see a movie if it has the words Pride and Prejudice. But how do you sell the concept of “& zombies” to those Austen purists?

Lily James: I think that there’s been a lot of Pride and Prejudice’s before in the past. It’s been done very well and I think it’s always interesting if you love something to see it done in a different way. What we all found was kind of crazy. [Putting] something so surreal and strange as zombies in Pride and Prejudice somehow [helped] some of the scenes and relationships in the book become heightened. Liz Bennet gets to beat the crap out of Darcy, which is really a sort of a physical expression of all her sexual frustration. I mean that’s a very basic analysis but it was just interesting how the zombies kind of contributed.

Bella Heathcote: Yes. Jane Austen’s all about female empowerment and this film is, too. It just has a cynical expression because we get to beat the crap out

of zombies. So there you go. I think they’d like it.

LJ: Girl power. Jane Austen would love girl power and so would Jane Austen purists.

Matt Smith: And also they’ve probably seen it done so many times. It has been done and near perfectly a few times as well, so it’s kind of cool for them to just see it in a different way.

Kate Marquee, University of Missouri at St. Louis: This novel has had a kind of long, slow road to the screen and had gone through a number of different directors in particular, and writers and I was wondering if any of you had any trepidations about this prior to the beginning of the shoot? [Did you have] any fears that once things got underway were soothed?

LJ: Well, to make a film happen, I’ve learned, is such a long journey. I think The Danish Girl was in development for 13 years, so [it] didn’t worry me that the script had been around for so long. In fact, it really drew me into the project because when you hear — I think at one

point, Bradley Cooper and Scarlett Johansson were going to do it and another point it was Anne Hathaway. These are people that I would really sort of respect.

And we hoped that sort of an alchemy came together this time, which is why it happened with [director Burr Steers].

There’s no rhyme or reason to why things happen when they do but we’re really happy that it did with this lovely cast.

Brandon Wagner, Emory University: Obviously, this is an immensely subversive take on this story and that gives you some leeway to bring in less traditional takes on these classic characters. Was there anything that you specifically put in to subvert these characters or our expectations of them or that you just thought was a particularly interesting twist that is provided by this kind of project?

LJ: I didn’t purposely try and subvert [Liz Bennet] because so much was just done anyway in the story, in the plot and the circumstance, but because of that I think my Liz Bennet is much angrier, much [more] spirited, sort of she says what she — she manifests what she feels

more.

She can’t hide it as well as, I think, Liz tends — does in the original.

Remembering the Eagles’

“Y

ou have three chances to guess the musician,” my dad called out from behind our car’s steering wheel. This was our special game. We were driving through the canyons of Los Angeles in the summer, the car’s black leather burning my back, the sun making my shoulders more freckled than they would’ve been had I not grown up there. All I had to do was listen. Captivated by the easy sound, I stared out the window as the palm trees of exaggerated fantasy passed in the periphery, but it wasn’t long before I ran out of guesses. Soon thereafter, it was revealed to me that the song was “Take It Easy” by the Eagles. Glenn Frey was lead singer. Later, my dad took a detour, stopping to point out a studio apartment where Frey and Jackson Browne, his collaborator and songwriter, lived when they first moved to Los Angeles in the early ‘70s before rising to fame.

Los Angeles has long been hailed as a land of sunlit grandeur and disillusioned fantasies for creative forces hoping to catch their break. But for Frey, the founding member of the Eagles who died on Jan. 18, his dreams became a reality that he fully embraced within his catalogue.

If the Beach Boys pioneered the distinctive sound of California in the ‘60s with “California Girls” and “Surfin’ USA,” it was clear that by the mid-1970s, the musical baton of Southern California songs had been passed to the Eagles — and Frey was the visionary.

Hotel California, the Eagles’ most famous album/title track and greatest commercial victory, has an album cover that illustrates this 1970s Cali-

fornia fantasy — silhouettes of palm trees are pitted against a golden glow, and a tequila sunrise invites listeners to embrace the easy life of L.A. where energy is manifested through the “warm smell of colitas” and “pink champagne on ice.”

Since its release, “Hotel California” has had unrelenting success among not only Californians, but also people who wish they were Californians.

Whether the song is played on the radio, used as background noise at birthday parties and kickbacks or learned by kids picking up a guitar for the first time, it’s clearly inescapable and timeless.

With hit singles including “New Kid in Town,” “Lyin’ Eyes” and “Life in the Fast Lane,” the country-rock sound of the Eagles’ has long been pigeonholed to embody the hunky-dory narrative of what it means to be young and cool in California. But to solely remember Frey in terms of sunkissed fantasy would be belittling to his talent as a musician, as well as his complexity as a human being. When the Eagles broke up in the 1980s, Frey still dedicated himself to the craft by charting a solo career with songs such as “The One You Love,” “The Heat is On” and “You Belong in the City.”

Although his solo albums never reached the same heights and popularity, they offer a glimpse into who Frey was as a person.

In 1988, at the age of 40, he released Soul Searchin’, an album that, while musically rudimentary, explores complex themes of alienation and unrequited love with lyrics that serve as a potent reminder of the relationship between fame and universality. In “Can’t Put Out This Fire” he

sings, “People leave, but love still hangs around/ Memories refuse to go away/They follow you and haunt you night and day.”

Beneath the aura of the Eagles, Frey had to wrestle with the very things that make us most human: heartbreak, memories and existential crises. This is a large testament to Glenn Frey’s ability to pioneer songs that endure.

Growing up now, the culture of the 1970s and the music scene that echoed it seem impregnable, like an idyllic dream that blanketed everyone in golden hues, a past that we can never repeat. But for those fully immersed — “Can’t Put Out This Fire,” the Eagles in it, the death of Frey seems to be emblematic of a larger picture — one that I may not fully understand first-hand but can appreciate second handedly from the backseat. As the sun set over the Los Angeles skyline, Frey’s voice brought comfort to the car: “Take it easy. Don’t let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy.”

And so we drove on.

Delia’s is another Atlanta institution, but the best bite is the Real Deal: Chicken sausage, ketchup, mustard, sweet pickles, diced onions and the heavenly “comeback” sauce that lives up to its name.

4. Victory Sandwich Bar | The Hambo + VLT $8 Downtown Decatur is a foodie’s mecca, with dozens of amazing restaurants within walking distance of each other. The best part about Victory other than their Jack and Coke slushie, the eclectic movies playing on the screen inside or the cozy patio outside are the namesake sandwiches. Normally, I’d be upset if my portion sizes were on the smaller side, but intense flavors packed into a small package makes them the perfect size for maximizing cost with taste.

In the middle of the amazing Ponce City Market, Hop’s Chicken is the brainchild of Atlanta master-of-all-things-delicious Linton Hopkins and one of the reasons I’m proud to claim a heritage of Southern food. Probably one of the best chicken biscuits I’ve ever eaten paired with Mac & Cheese that rivals my grandmother’s, I couldn’t believe how inexpensive it was and why more people weren’t fighting to get a piece of this delicious fare.

Hankook Taqueria | Chicken, Beef and Fish Tacos + Sesame Fries $9.75 A little off the beaten path in the northwest side of town, Hankook Taqueria offers a nice combination of Korean and Mexican flavors. Who would have thought sesame fries would go with tacos? “Bul gogi” beef with lettuce, onion and cabbage is sure to set your taste buds on a one-way trip to happiness.

Fellini’s Pizza | Two Slices of Fellini’s Special $8.80 The only thing better than good pizza is good pizza that is available until 2 a.m. Fellini’s offers one of the best pizza pies around town, and their “Fellini’s Special” pizza is sure to have you thanking the oven that baked it. Pepperoni, Mushrooms, Italian Sausage, Onions, Meatballs, Green Peppers, Black Olives, Green Olives and extra cheese for less than five dollars a slice sounds like it ought to be illegal.

Giant burritos. Chips. Guac. Choices. Bell Street Burritos has everything except the kitchen sink on the menu, and even then I’m sure they could make that for you. Even an extra-large burrito won’t break the budget, and the combinations available would take you months of visits to even scratch the surface.

10. Cook-Out | Literally Anything On The Menu Ah, Cook Out. Home of everything delicious and cheap. A place where you can get a quesadilla as a side for your quesadilla. Where a meal for two is cheaper than parking in Atlanta or a Starbucks Frappuccino. Where you can get a Hi-C milkshake. Just let that sink in. I’m sure you could buy about half of the menu for less than $10 and still have money left over. And it’s open until 4:30 a.m. on the weekends. If good karma exists, then it is manifested in Cook-Out (with a side quesadilla, of course).

Art Awakens

“I

just want as many students to have access to the arts as possible,” said College sophomore Jenifer Norwalk, who is in the process of founding Art Awakens, an organization that aims to provide a creative outlet to individuals in nursing homes, hospitals and homeless shelters.

The members of Art Awakens, currently undergoing the process to receive an official charter from the Emory Student Government Association for the club, work with the elderly during visits to nearby nursing homes, but the students will soon travel to local hospitals in order to extend outreach to a larger variety of patients. Projects will include making paper snowflakes, weaving, painting and embroidering.

“This project will provide the means for these people to engage in art projects, while allowing them to express themselves, relax and enjoy the creative process of making art,” College freshman and Vice President of Art Awakens Alex Nazzari wrote in an email to the Wheel.

According to Norwalk, an internship with the Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) last summer inspired her to create Art Awakens when she arrived back on Emory’s campus in order to continue her experiences with art and service. The Emory College Center for Creativity and the Arts awarded Art Awakens a grant in October that allowed the organization to purchase art supplies.

Since then, the organization has reached out to local nursing homes in order to organize future cooperation and has promoted membership in the Emory community by informing the student body of the organization’s purpose and role in the neighboring Atlanta community.

Although Art Awakens is still in the begin-

ning stages of development, the organization has already worked with nearby nursing homes, including Budd Terrace at Wesley Woods.

The organization will also establish a connection with the Atlanta Coalition for the Homeless.

Norwalk has also worked with other organizations, including Creative Connections and Art’s the Spark, allowing her to work with children with learning disabilities and autism, as well as adults with memory or neurological impairments, on art projects, according to OMA’s website; Art Awakens aims to draw from these experiences and begin work with individuals facing situations similar to those with whom Norwalk interacted

with during her internship.

The organization will also establish a connection with the Atlanta Coalition for the Homeless in the future, which will allow members to expand their outreach to more members of the Atlanta community, similar to Norwalk’s previous experience in leading art projects for homeless youth through the Orlando Coalition for the Homeless.

The organization will also forge partnerships with the Autism Center and Winship Cancer Institute.

Emory students will benefit from this program by experiencing one-on-one interactions with patients, enabling them to gain new perspectives on what others are going through, a quality that makes them better friends, family members and community members, according to Norwalk.

Norwalk also said that patients will benefit as well by engaging in a universal activity that individuals of all backgrounds can enjoy together despite their differences.

“Every [patient] I have worked with so far stands out to me,” Norwalk said. “Everyone has been so full of life and personality despite difficult life circumstances.”

The members of Art Awakens are also excited for opportunities for growth, which include extending the program to other schools in Georgia.

“I just want more people and nursing homes to be involved,” Norwalk said, citing the organization’s ability to provide patients with access to the arts as “one of the most rewarding things.”

Nazzari agreed that she is excited to “connect [with] a wide range of people” and share her personal interest in art with others, “allowing [patients] to use art through their healing process.”

I fail to understand the fashion choices of Mardi Gras goers, male and female. Mismatched colors. Tacky beads. Bro tanks in cold weather. Emory celebrates Seniors with win vs. Sewanee, fall to Georgia Tech in the same weekend

his past Friday, Emory’s men and women’s swimming and diving teams dominated against Sewanee: The University of the South (Tenn.), not losing a single event as the women won 133-91 and the men won 124-77. The next day, both teams fell to Georgia Institute of Technology, the women 152.5-90.5 and the men 192-45. On Friday, the team celebrated their 12 graduating senior Eagles in a pre-meet ceremony.

“The whole team has bonded so much over the years, and we [juniors] have spent a long time with seniors,” junior Claire Liu said. “It was bittersweet to see, nice to see them with their families but sad because they’re graduating. But the whole team got together and gave them a nice send-off.”

On the women’s side against Sewanee, senior Ellie Thompson led the team, picking up two wins in the 200-meter IM (2:09.47) and the 100-meter backstroke (57.60). Junior Claire Liu recorded the only NCAA ‘B’ cut time for Emory with her winning time of 51.99 in the 100-meter freestyle. Additional first place finish-

ers included senior Elizabeth Aronoff in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:05.80,) juniors Marissa Bergh in the 200-meter freestyle (1:55.52) and Annelise Kowalsky in the 100-meter butterfly (58.51), sophomore Isabella Issa in the 1,000-meter freestyle (10:47.22) and freshmen Hannah Baratz in the 50-meter freestyle (24.53) and Ava Salmi in the 500-meter freestyle (5:06.94).

First place finishes from the men’s side included senior Matt Wu in the 200-meter IM (1:57.74), juniors Christian Baker in the 100-meter butterfly (50.19) and Mitchell Cooper in the 100-meter backstroke (51.32), sophomores Alex Hardwick in the 200-meter freestyle (1:43.56) and Chandler Lichtefeld in the 100-meter breastroke (59.40) and freshmen Matt Varraveto in the 1,000-meter freestyle (9:55.46), Zachary Chen in the 50-meter freestyle (21.72), Trey Kolleck in the 100-meter freestyle (47.64) and Jonathan Morse in the 500-meter freestyle (4:45.48).

Hardwick mentioned that the meet was a fun competition because of Senior Day and the big win. “It was

more of a technical meet, as well,” he said. “We were able to work on a lot of things we’ve been doing in practice.”

On Saturday, Emory traveled to Georgia Tech for their last competition of the dual meet portion of this season.

Sophomores Rebecca Upton and Julia Wawer set the pace for the meet with their first place finishes. Upton won the 1,000-meter freestyle (10:29.04), while Wawer won the 500-meter freestyle (5:09.35). Upton also placed second in the 500-meter freestyle (5:12.88).

Wawer joined the 400-meter freestyle relay team along with Bergh, Liu and freshman Fiona Muir to win the event (3:29.79). Sophomore Mara Rosenstock competed in two diving events, placing second in the 1-meter (299.40) and third in the 3-meter (261.15).

At Georgia Tech, the men were led by junior Christian Baker, who placed second in both the 200-meter freestyle (1:42.11) and the 500-meter freestyle (4:37.75).

Sophomore Oliver Smith finished second in the 50-meter freestyle (20.55) and finished third in the 100-meter freestyle (47.20). Cooper finished second in the 400-meter IM (4:08.19).

Hardwick said that the competitive meet against Georgia Tech set the team up for the tougher races at the end of the year. “Georgia Tech beat us, but I think we swam over what their expectations for us were,” he said.

The Eagles are now preparing for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Feb. 17-20 hosted at the University of Rochester (N.Y.). Both teams will be seeking their 18th consecutive UAA win, the women looking for their 24th overall and the men for 18th overall.

The same weekend, however, many Emory swimmers will be back at Sewanee for their last chance to improve their times before the NCAA Division III Championships in March.

Liu is heading to the UAA’s, but said it doesn’t really matter which meet swimmers go to. “The overall goal is to swim fast and have fun, which can happen anywhere, whether it be at Sewanee or the UAA’s.”

Hardwick added that the teams are looking to continue the winning tradition at the UAA’s, and use the competition as a test run for NCAA’s. “But we’re just taking it one meet at a time,” he said.

SPORTS Individuals Highlight Clemson Meet Eagles prepare for Tiger Indoor Invitational With D-1, D-II Competition Oliver Rockman | Staff Writer oliver.rockman@emory.edu

T

he Emory Track and Field team continued their indoor season last weekend at the Bob Pollock Invitational hosted by Clemson University (S.C.). The Eagles faced NCAA Divisions I and II competition at the event. Emory Coach John Curtin was impressed with the performance from both the men’s and women’s teams, telling the Wheel that, “We saw some kids really step up and take some steps forward.”

Taking second place in the 5,000m run, senior Aileen Rivell achieved a personal best with her time of 17:48.06. Curtin was “blown away” by Rivell’s performance.

“The meet’s biggest surprise was Aileen Rivell in the 5,000m. She had never broken 18 minutes before, and she absolutely exploded to run 17:48. She ran a perfect race,” Curtin said.

Other impressive performances for the women’s team came from senior Julie Williamson, who placed third in the 800m run with a time of 2:14.11, and freshman Radhika Shah, who ran the 600m race in 1:41.82 and took third. Sophomore Erica Goldman placed second and set a personal best in the 400m dash with a time of 58.26. Goldman also anchored the 4x400 relay team that finished in fourth place with a time of 3:55.29. Sophomore Julia Leventhal and freshmen Dilys Osei and Ariana Newhouse made up the rest of the relay team. Goldman’s performances prompted Curtin to label her as the “outstanding athlete of the weekend.”

The men’s team earned a pair of first place finishes from senior Lukas Mees, with a time of 15:28.34 in the 5,000m run, and junior Ian McIsaac, with a time of 1:23.72 in the 600m event. Sophomore Daniel Pietsch placed second in the 400m run with a time of 49.40, and sophomore Max Brown placed fourth in the mile run with a time of 4:15.90. Senior Spencer Koh came within two centimeters of a school record in the pole vault; his jump of 4.45 was a personal best and earned a second place finish.

The Pollock Invitational is run on a flat 200m track, meaning that unlike the majority of indoor events that the teams will run on this semester, no conversion factor is added to normalize the times. Curtin explained the value of running on a track without these conversions: “It was an opportunity for us to put up some fast times that weren’t going to be messed with,” Curtin said. “Julie [Williamson] ran a little slower than last week, but her time ranked faster because of the lack of a conversion factor. It was really great for the sprinters, particularly the women’s 4x400 relay team, to run on the flat without conversion. It is really important for them mentally that the time they ran is the time that posted.”

The Emory Track and Field team will continue their indoor season on Saturday, Feb. 6, when they travel to Sewanee: The University of the South (Tenn.) to compete in the Tiger Indoor Invitational.

T

he Emory women’s basketball team is coming home from a tough weekend road trip. Last Friday, the Eagles (10-7) traveled to the Ratner Center to play the University of Chicago (11-6) (Ill.). The game was close throughout, but the Eagles lost the lead a couple of minutes into the third quarter after being up for most of the first half.

The final score saw the Eagles lose 79-73, with an unusually poor defensive performance by Emory. The Eagles forced eight fewer turnovers and allowed a higher opponent field-goal percentage than their average mark.

Despite a decent shooting night from the Eagles overall, the opponent’s offense was too tough to stop.

The one positive aspect of the game for the Eagles was the strong performance from senior Ilene Tsao, who had a career-high 20 points in a very efficient outing (eight for 11 from the field).

Tsao maintained a high level of play going into the next game, with 13 points and five assists in the first half

of Sunday’s game against Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.). This effort brought about a 39-34 lead for the Eagles going into halftime.

Unfortunately, despite junior Shellie Kaniut’s season-high 20 points on a highly impressive pace of 8-10 shooting for the game, that advantage slipped when Wash U went on a 10-4 run with 5:51 left in the third quarter. Emory had further chances, including one with just 1:08 left in the fourth quarter, when they faced a four point deficit. Unfortunately, the foul game did not work out in their favor as the Bears drained six of eight free throws to secure their victory.

Although the Eagles shot better than the Bears from the field overall, they lost the rebound, turnover and threepoint shooting battles, resulting in a 75-68 loss. Washington University in St. Louis boosted their record to 15-3 and 6-1 in the UAA, while the Eagles dropped to 10-8 overall and 1-6 in the league.

Emory women’s basketball will look to bounce back on Feb. 5 in a re-match against the University of Chicago.
