Conversation Laney, Carter, Wagner share the stage, praise the connection between the University and the Carter Center

istinguished Emory alumni and Atlanta community members gathered at the Carter Center on Wednesday, Feb. 10 for a conversation between three presidential figures.

Former President of the United States Jimmy Carter, President Emeritus of Emory University James T. Laney and current University President James W. Wagner explained the connections between the Carter Center and Emory University, as well as what the future holds for the partnership.

The consensus among the three men was that the institutions will permanently maintain their bond, as they have helped each other to reach new heights.

Carter began the program by taking the audience back to 1979, when he was invited to Emory to receive an honorary degree. Laney, who awarded Carter the degree, said that he felt Carter had been someone “who represented … what was best and human and noble in life.” Both Laney and Wagner said that Emory’s partnership with the Carter Center has significantly contributed to the success and impact of the University.

There, Wagner added that Carter identified great potential in the University and its ability to carry out global service responsibilities, especially in the realm of health. In 2005, the University implemented a global health initiative for developing nations with the support of the Carter Center and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The global health initiative was created to foster research and scholarship in regions around the world and to help train the next generation of global health leaders.

Carter has continued his involvement with Emory through annual town hall assemblies and meetings with faculty members and international students. He said that he encourages professors to instill “modern day human experiences with moral and ethical values.”

Emory’s leaders need not feel indebted to Carter for his contributions — he said he has gained more from the relationship than the school has.

He added that he greatly enjoys his involvement with Emory, especially through his on-campus events, and that he takes pride in his work with the University. He continues to make an impact by meeting with faculty

and President Wagner on a monthly basis. Carter said that he is still filled with ambition to make an impact on the world through the collaboration between the Carter Center and Emory.

The two institutions have had the opportunity to tackle a variety of global issues together, and the three panelists agreed that this relationship has thrived because the Carter Center and Emory have both set individual goals. They plan to keep their relationship drawn but not bound together.

Santiago Vazquez of Atlanta, who attended the event, said that he was amazed by the involvement that Emory and the Carter Center have had throughout the city. “Being an outsider from the Emory community but witnessing everything that is going on around here is impressive, especially in regards to the eloquence and ability both [institutions] have to help the community,” he said.

Ryan Roche, who graduated from Emory College in 2005, also conveyed praise for the event. “The legacy and history of the men on stage, and everything they did behind the scenes to help, have such an impact it’s incredible.”

ast week, Emory’s Greek Life Task Force (GLTF), an initiative launched by Emory’s Division of Campus Life, released a preliminary report of recommendations regarding ways to improve the quality of Greek Life at Emory.

“Our goal is to work in partnership with students to create an inclusive community that supports students in developing leadership and skills to transform their communities,” Assistant Vice President of Community in Campus Life Suzanne Onorato said. “We seek to develop shared principles in a learning community focused on academic engagement, accountability, civic engagement, cultural humility, integrity, leadership and self-governance.”

Onorato and Dean of Campus Life Ajay Nair developed the GLTF in September 2015 to assess the strengths and weaknesses of Emory’s Greek community and move towards tangible progress in improving the University’s Greek system. The initiative is crucial for Greek life because of internal problem issues at Emory’s various fraternities, particularly hazing, sexual assault and exclusivity, according to Onorato.

Specifically, the instances of hazing that resulted in the removal of four fraternity chapters over the past three years “prompted a desire to re-imagine what Emory Greek Life can be,” Onorato said.

“We desire to develop [the] best practices at our campus that others seek to emulate,” she said.

Nair wrote in an email to the Wheel that he believes that this initiative is in line with Emory Campus Life’s mission to “cultivate a welcoming and dynamic community that is committed to developing life skills necessary for lifelong success and positive transformation in the world.” He hopes the GLTF will enhance the quality of Greek Life at Emory, as well as maximize its potential to “provide positive educational and social experiences for students.”

Onorato and Nair reached out to members of the community in order to form the Task Force, contacting organizations such as the four Greek councils, Emory’s Residence Hall Association (RHA) and Student Government Association (SGA).

They also made administrative appointments of key staff members, alumni and advisors with considerable insight into the issues with Greek Life at Emory.

According to Onorato, the GLTF’s objectives were to critically examine primary aspects of Greek Life: vision and mission of Greek Life at Emory; Eagle Row’s residential communities; relationships with national organizations, Campus Life, alumni/advisors and students; and self governance and accountability. The GLTF then met to provide recommendations to improve these areas. The Task Force developed a committee for each of the areas, each of which provided recommendations on how to improve their respective areas after conducting meetings throughout the fall semester.

“The core of the conversation [in our committee] focused on ways to empower students within the Emory sorority and fraternity community to take ownership,” Assistant Director of Prevention Strategies Raphael Coleman, who served on the

Self Governance Accountability subcommittee, wrote in an email to the Wheel.

The majority of Coleman’s subcommittee oversaw training needs and the selection of risk managers and members of the Sorority and Fraternity Life Review Board. Their conversations focused on the need for clarity and transparency in the conduct process at the organizational level as well as through anti-hazing policies at Emory.

Coleman noted that these suggestions were developed from prevalent issues with conduct in the Greek community on Emory’s campus.

She added that she hopes that this initiative will ultimately enable Greek students to work in partnership with other institutional constituents to make the Emory Greek community “the premier experience for our students that decide to join.”

RoseAnn Hansen, who was chosen to serve on the GLTF’s Chapter Relationships subcommittee due to her work as Emory’s Kappa Alpha Theta chapter advisor, said that she believes this initiative was the first step towards substantial progress in improving Emory’s Greek community. She said that her committee has the potential to bridge communication gaps between the various Greek-affiliated organizations.

“We realized that even though we’re in different organizations, we sometimes all have the same issues,” she said. “We want to promote unity among the Greek community, and I think this is a good way to do that.”

Hansen said that the entire experience was eye-opening for her. “Students said that they wanted to get to know their advisors and other Greek students better. They want to have big activities, like team-building games at Piedmont Park,” she said.

Hansen said that she is most concerned about the role that social media plays in the negative perception of Greek life, an issue that she did not face when she was in a sorority at Emory.

She hopes that bettering the relationships between different Greek chapters will foster unity and prompt everyone involved to take on a risk management role in order to maintain an overall positive Greek image.

“With social media and the Internet, if something happens nowadays, the whole world knows instantly, and the reaction is almost always negative,” she said. “As a Greek community, we’re all subject to more risk management roles .… Liability issues are huge now.”

Looking forward, Hansen said that the next step for the GLTF after receiving feedback from the larger community about the specific suggestions will be to finalize the preliminary report of recommendations that the Task Force released.

“It was good that the Task Force was mostly made up of people involved in Greek life because we got a chance to clean up our house before we invite people in,” she said. “But I think as we begin to implement the changes, an outside perspective will be really helpful.”

Community members can contribute to the final recommendation by completing a form through the GLTF webpage on the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life (OSFL) website by Feb. 26.

Onorato stressed that receiving constructive community feedback is crucial to achieve the GLTF’s overarching goal of improving Emory’s Greek community.

“It may take us some time to completely develop and work out the kinks,” she said. “We are talking about changing culture in many ways and that takes time, commitment and student buy-in.”

Interfraternity Council (IFC) President Alex Von Gorp wrote in an email to the Wheel that the IFC is reviewing and providing feedback regarding the Greek Life Task Force’s recommendations. “We will continue to work towards positive outcomes and include IFC Executive Board members, chapter presidents, IFC members, alumni, the OSFL and all relevant stakeholders in any actions that are taken in the future,” he wrote.

Ultimately, Nair is confident that this initiative will positively impact Emory’s Greek Life on a national scale.

“I believe that Greek Life on campus and the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life can become nationally recognized for cultivating an experience that prepares students to positively transform their communities and the world,” he wrote in an email to the Wheel.

On Feb. 11 at 10:27 p.m., Emory Police Department (EPD) responded to a call regarding a strong scent of marijuana coming from an apartment in Clairmont Tower. The complainant believed that his roommate had marijuana at the location. The complainant did not let officers into the apartment because he didn’t want his roommate to find out that he made the call. The case has been turned over to a detective and

On Feb. 12 at 2:36 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding a burglary at Evans Hall. A student told officers that on Feb. 9 between 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., someone entered her room and stole a sterling silver ring valued at $2,000. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

On Feb. 12 at 4:05 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding a damaged vehicle at the Lowergate

South Parking Deck. The driver of a 2012 Nissan Versa called EPD after seeing damage on the driver side front bumper. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

On Feb. 12 at 10:05 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding brokenglass near a house in the vicinity of the Briarcliff house.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located broken eggs and plates on the side of the house but no broken glass.

On Feb. 13 at 2:18 a.m., EPD responded to a call regarding a student under the influence of alcohol at the intersection of Eagle Row and the Longstreet-Means

parking garage. When officers arrived, Emory Emergency Medical Technicians were rendering aid to the individual. The student said that she had taken the Safe Ride bus but had experienced motion sickness. The student said she drank two glasses of vodka mixed with coke earlier in the evening and attended a party on Eagle Row. The student refused transportation to the hospital and was released to a friend who was to monitor her throughout the night.

• On Feb. 14 at 8:52 a.m., EPD responded to a fire alarm at Clairmont Tower. When EPD officers and DeKalb Fire and Facilities Management arrived on the scene, they located burnt French toast on the eleventh floor. There was damage to the building.

T

his past weekend, 115 Emory women joined the newest addition to Emory Panhellenic Council (EPC), the national sorority Pi Beta Phi (Pi Phi). Over a three-day rush period, separate from the earlier general sorority recruitment process, over 150 interested students participated out of which 115 received bids.

The organization, which, according to its website, seeks to “promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential and enrich lives through community service,” was selected in Spring 2015 to join Emory’s Greek Life following a process organized by EPC to add another sorority to the existing seven already on campus. Furthermore, because of a vacancy in the Sorority Village, Pi Phi will be occupying the currently empty H Lodge following an installation ceremony later this semester so as to allow members to move in for the next academic year.

In an email to the Wheel, Pi Phi Resident Leader Development Consultant (LDC) Nicole Ballou wrote that “the [EPC] chooses who they would like

to colonize their campus” and that the organization chose to expand to Emory because “campus growth opportunities complement Pi Beta Phi’s academic, social and philanthropic mission.” Ballou also confirmed that the organization would make H Lodge its home.

Pi Phi began its outreach process during formal sorority recruitment, hosting a presentation on the first day of rounds. College freshman Mehvish Khan said that she found Pi Phi’s outreach efforts and the sorority’s national reputation particularly effective in generating interest for her and that those factors led to her asking friends at other schools about their experiences.

“I have many friends in Pi Phi around the country that I knew from [high school, who] only have good things to say about it,” Khan said.

“When I heard their stories, they really resonated with me.” While she did receive a bid from another sorority, Khan decided to decline the bid and pursue the recruitment process for Pi Phi.

The sorority’s outreach efforts continued outside of formal sorority recruitment rounds. Students who had rushed in years past but decided not to join a sorority learned of the colonization efforts in an email sent out several days before the beginning of Pi Phi’s rush process.

College senior Kelsey Pinkerton was one such student who, in her sophomore year, dropped out of the recruitment process because of a concussion.

“I decided that [my sophomore year] was not the time for me because of a concussion at the same time,” Pinkerton said. “Getting the email last Tuesday was [a sign] to me that [I could be a part of] bringing in a new sisterhood on campus.”

The prospect of starting the organization from the ground up also appealed to other new members. “Getting to make something how you want to make it — it’s a blank slate — is a great opportunity [for showing and developing] leadership,” Khan said.

Pinkerton noted that the others participating in the recruitment process were notably invested in the process.

“[What stuck out most to me] was how focused all the other [women participating in rush] were,” Pinkerton said.

“We all had this idea in common that we want to be the foundation of something that can be great for this organization.”

The rush events took place over a three-day period, from Friday, Feb. 12 through Sunday, Feb. 14, using a system in which small groups met with the LDCs from the national organization and then in the last round with members of the University of Georgia chapter of Pi Beta Phi. Bids were extended to prospective members on Sunday, and all those who were offered bids accepted.

Several students mentioned hopes of further expanding the current pledge class before the end of the semester.

When asked, the national organization confirmed that the group would be extending bids over the upcoming weeks, as they are able to accommodate more students. It wants to offer the opportunity to the “women who missed out on [colonization weekend] for various reasons.”

NEWS ROUNDUP Fire reported in Atwood

Students present sustainability project

D

ekalb County Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a fire at Atwood Hall earlier tonight. Fire Apparatus Operator Tad Landou from Dekalb County Fire and Rescue said that they found the small fire in one of the vent hood workspaces in a seventh floor chemistry lab.

The building had been evacuated upon their arrival. There were no reported injuries.

“Right now the fire is extinguished,” Landou said. “The fire was limited to the vent hood workspace in the laboratory, and at this time, it is all under control.”

After receiving a call regarding the fire, firetrucks were dispatched at 6:37 p.m., and Emory first responders arrived on site a few minutes later. Upon arrival, maintenance staff told Dekalb County Fire and Rescue that those working in the lab already vacated the building. “[Dekalb County Fire and Rescue] is just working on finding what, if any, chemicals were involved, and if there is any hazard before we turn the building back over,” Landou said.

Presidential Selection Committee progresses

E

mory’s Presidential Selection Committee has developed a prospectus for the new presidential position after meeting 37 times with members of the Emory community, including students, alumni and Healthcare employees.

The description for the next University president was approved by the Emory Board of Trustees Friday, Feb. 12.

“The prospectus is in part a job description but it also includes the strategic opportunities, aspirations and deeply held and shared values of Emory, as well as the leadership qualities that will be pivotal as we recruit prospective candidates for consideration,” Emory Board of Trustees Chair John Morgan wrote in an all-Emory email.

The expectations for the next president, as listed on the prospectus, include exhibiting the will to lead, building resources, leveraging the health sciences, moving from diversity to inclusion, engaging broadly and facilitating collaboration.

ast week, Emory’s student-run Graduate Sustainability Group (GSG) launched the Interactive Emory Sustainability Ecosystem map, an online tool that allows users to learn about sustainability groups and initiatives at Emory, according to a Feb. 11 University press release.

“Through the map, anyone can see all the great work that’s being done at Emory with sustainability,” said Director of Emory’s Office of Sustainability Initiatives Ciannat Howett in the press release. These efforts include Food Advisory Council for Emory (FACE) and Emory’s Water Coalition.

The GSG developed this map after three semesters of researching and mapping Emory’s sustainability network, which is comprised of over 700 faculty members, undergraduates and graduate students. GSG President Ioulia Fenton said in the press release that GSG members were inspired to create the map because they noticed that many people were unaware of Emory’s available sustainability projects.

The GSG leaders held information sessions to formally present the project to the Emory community on Wednesday, Feb. 3 and Wednesday, Feb. 10. The map will be updated every semester, and users will be able to utilize zoom-in and search features to view more details for each available project, such as website addresses, current leadership and contact information, according to the release.

Why get high?

E

very night around eleven, hundreds of Emory students close their books, lock their doors, and get high. In groups or alone, on weekends and week nights, students are consuming countless pounds of marijuana each moth. Administrators are concerned. The surrounding community has even closed its head shops.

Yet, as of last quarter, 30 percent of the undergraduates are on the dean’s list, and seniors are being accepted to grad schools at usually high rates.

Smoking marijuana is a hobby shared and enjoyed by students throughout the country. And, though university administrators, particularly Emory’s, have recently declared an epidemic, the actual number of student smokers proably hasn’t changed much in the last five years. What has changed, however, is society’s willingness to accept pot.

Marijuana was taken from it birthplace in gutters and ghettos long ago; today, joints are shamelessly rolled by lawyers and housewives, and smoked in restuarants and living rooms all over America. It isn’t just the young and foolish either. If their peers weren’t partaking, administrators would not be so enlightened abou the wide-spread use of pot on their campuses.

It seems that marijuana has gone the way of many touchy historical issues; a kind of defacto legalization has occured. Even though some non-smokers see great evils in marijuana use, smokers obviously do not. And, because so many people do get high, public policy has become more tolerant.

For students, there are many reasons. On the lowest of levels is pot’s social value. Many find marijuana an inexpensive and easily accessible form of relaxation. Several people can get together, roll a joint or two, and take it easy for a while.

They don’t have to go anywhere don’t have to worry about the price of a few drinks. And, when partying of this type takes place, an open and productive atmosphere is created. Inhibitions decreased, the exchange of ideas and conversation is facilitated.

Students can just sit down and talk; a refreshing change from the large party or bar room where exchanging pleasantries without spilling the beer is the main objective.

Marijuana also deters scholastic pressure, but in a special way, for it is not harmful to scholastic achievement, provided that a student is conscientious by nature.

Though many, especially parents of students, believe partying and studying are incompatible, this is not true. It depends strictly on the individual. Because there are people disposed, through socialization, genetics or physiology, to de-

rilism, it is presumed that such a problem may be manifest through the use of pot.

Marijuana, then, does not lead to derilism, though it may come under its employ.

In fact, marijuana can be an aid to study. Most smokers agree on one point.

They cannot or will not, study when high.

For some reason psychologists attribute it to state-dependent learning or loss of certain facilities associated with concentration- smoking is incompatible with the type of retention necessary when reviewing for a test or doing a night’s homework.

Mechanical abilities, such as those needed for working problems, also seem to the impaired. But, so long as students smoke after they have finished their work, it can be helpful. Studies complete, if only for an evening, students can get high, with the knowledge that any further attempt at working would be futile.

Thus, those nagging books are left silent for a while. And, when work is resumed, a fresh approach can be taken. In sum, pot helps maximize non-studying by maximizing relaxation.

On a more philosophical level, marijuana, by evoking a slight change of perception, gives one the benefit of a wider perspective.

Many students say that pot gives them a different angle on things. “I never thought of it quite that way before” is a common realization. Pot seems thus to facilitate greater creativity. Sensitivities heightened, one is struck by that lone tree within the forest, that artfully constructed image in a novel.

Things taste and sound and feel and look better only because the mind is sharpened. But, while an element within one’s mind is often discovered when under the influence of marijuana, pot is only a key which can unlock a previously unopened faculty.

A return visit can be made at any time, whether high or not, for the purpose of development. Similarly, this does not imply that the element could not have been found without marijuana. Potential is something ingrained; either it is or it isn’t.

Marijuana cannot create talent or thought, but it does seem to make one more adventurous about his or her own essence. Can this be harmful? Finding self-awareness is a difficult task, one which must be undertaken by all people at all times throughout their lives.

If smoking marijuana can aid in the pursuit of self, then surely it has merit, for this pursuit is very often an elusive one.

Universities must remain gun-free

I

n the Georgia General Assembly, a bill was recently introduced that would make university campuses less safe, exacerbate existing risks related to alcohol abuse and sexual assault and undermine the educational mission of our state’s institutions of higher learning.

We ask the Emory community to unite and oppose this bill and its potentially disastrous outcomes.

The bill in question, HB 859, represents a direct threat to the safety of students. Supported by the senior Republican leadership in the legislature, HB 859 is the third attempt in three years by the gun lobby to extend the principle of campus-carry to colleges and universities in Georgia. The bill would allow licensed gun owners to carry firearms onto university campuses. The previous two efforts, in 2014 and 2015, died in committee before reaching the floor due to quiet pressure by the state Board of Regents.

However, the current bill has a better chance of passing because it contains exceptions the previous versions lacked. As currently written, it applies only to public universities and colleges, and it does not prevent schools from restricting the carrying of firearms into dorms, Greek life housing and sports facilities. But it would allow students to carry handguns and semi-automatic weapons into classrooms and auditoriums. And of course, the exceptions in the current bill could be readily dropped in the course of the bill’s movement through the legislature.

Similar last-minute, stealthy maneuvers succeeded with several provisions of the “carry anywhere” bill in 2014. It is perfectly possible that HB 859 would be amended as to apply to private as well as public institutions and to Greek life, residence halls and football stadiums.

This bill is extremely dangerous. If passed, it would increase the risk of injury, sexual assault and death for students.

Although its sponsors (and the gun lobbyists backing them) argue that they are trying to enhance the safety of students, the facts point in exactly the opposite direction. Campus crime rates increased in

Utah and Colorado after “campus carry” bills passed. In particular, the number of rapes rose sharply in both states — nearly 50 percent in Utah in the year after the legislation passed. Likewise, guns do not make people safer in workplaces and homes. Research from North Carolina showed that the risk of a homicide in workplaces where firearms are allowed is five to seven times greater than in workplaces where they are banned. Guns kept at home are even more dangerous: guns in the home are 22 times more likely to be used in a homicide, suicide or accident than in s elf-defens e.

By enacting campus carry laws, lawmakers are increasing the potential for violence on campus.

HB 859’s threat to student safety is increased by the fact that Georgia’s gun sales laws are notoriously lax. In Georgia, people under the age of 18 can legally buy guns from unlicensed gun dealers and, at age 18 or older, from licensed gun dealers. A gun purchase from a licensed dealer requires a background check but not safety training on safe handling and safe use of firearms. Georgia law does not even allow the registration of gun serial numbers. Already, Georgia is a major source of illegally trafficked guns. In fact, gun trafficking already occurs near campus.

Recently, an Emory professor observed a man selling guns out of the trunk of his car at an apartment complex near the Emory campus, where a large number of Emory students live.

Enacting this law would mean that young people who lack training in the safe handling of weapons will be allowed to bring untraceable rifles and assault weapons into a classroom or auditorium.

Increasing the number of firearms on campus would be dangerous even if students did not misuse alcohol and drugs.

But students face stresses of many kinds and often engage in risky, reckless or impulsive behavior. We can predict that the number of homicides, suicides and accidental deaths will increase. Already, over 1,800 college students die each year from unintentional alcohol-related injuries, including car crashes. Over half a million are injured. Over three million acknowledge sometimes driving under the influence of alcohol. Almost a third abuse alcohol.

How can it make sense to add guns to the mix?

Sometimes, we hear the argument, “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” This argument simply does not hold up. Evidence shows that in encounters with armed assailants, people using weapons in selfdefense are just as likely to die as those who are unarmed. All studies agree that the presence of more firearms in an environment increases rather than decreases the risk of fatal shootings. Therefore, the argument that arming students with firearms will make them safer is bogus. In all our years at Emory, not one of us has ever heard a student, staff member or administrator call for the carrying of guns onto campus. Where is the demand for this law coming from? From universities? Or the gun lobby backed by the gun manufacturers?

Beyond making students less safe, a “campus carry” law would profoundly undermine the educational process.

Guns on campus would intimidate. They would make faculty and students wonder whether it’s safe to discuss controversial

issues in a civil, respectful manner. They would stifle the kinds of constructive arguments that are essential to education. They will create a threatening environment for everyone, as people would carry guns into administrative offices, counseling centers, libraries and other campus facilities.

A sweeping “campus carry” bill passed in Texas in 2015. It prevents universities from banning concealed handguns on campus. It will come into force in August 2016, so its effect is not yet clear.

Both faculty and students spoke out forcefully against the bill, including the University of Texas System Chancellor and former Navy Seal in charge of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, Admiral William McRaven. “I’ve spent my whole life around guns,” Admiral McRaven said. “I grew up in Texas hunting. I spent 37 years in the military. I like guns, but I just don’t think having them on campus is the right place.” But the Texas Legislature was guided by ideology, not reason, and passed the bill.

In 2014, Georgia passed a “carry everywhere” law. It allows private universities such as Emory to prohibit carrying weapons onto their premises.

Emory currently does not allow firearms on campus. But a “campus carry” bill that applied to private institutions would deny it that right.

Legislation such as “campus carry” and the 2014 “carry everywhere” law that are currently enforced have not been tested in the courts. They may well not pass constitutional muster. Before the issues work their way through the courts, however, it is more than likely that people will die unnecessarily at the hand of irresponsible and inappropriate use of firearms. We need to act now to prevent the proliferation of firearms on Georgia campuses.

Laws regulating firearms need to be guided by common sense. Denying universities the right to restrict firearms on campus violates the fundamental notion of the university as a safe place for teaching and learning.

Zika: Is there a clear solution?

or Brazilians, getting a mosquito bite could turn into much more than an itchy bump for a week; it could transmit the Zika virus that has been ravaging South America and the Caribbean for almost two years. The bug to blame, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, only lives and thrives in tropical and subtropical parts of the world, which means Brazil is in for it.

The virus itself is not a horrendous health threat to someone who does not plan on becoming pregnant, but if the infected woman is already carrying, then there is a massive risk of her unborn child suffering from microcephaly, a devastating neurodevelopmental disorder that causes a fetus’ head to stop developing so that the brain pushes against the cranial walls and creates massive developmental issues. Hence the absolute panic in Brazil, a country which has seen the largest Zika outbreak as compared with the rest of the world.

Infected Brazilians, along with their South American and Caribbean neighbors, aren’t necessarily worried for themselves, but rather for their their unborn children (because the only huge problem Zika causes is a major birth defect in fetuses, otherwise its just a rash and fluelike symptoms) because Zika has a pretty strong, but unproven, link tomicrocephaly.

As bad as Zika seems, it gets worse.

The mosquitos prefer warm and humid areas, so the slums of Brazil make the perfect home for a mosquito couple to breed. Women who live in the country’s slums are also more at risk because they cannot afford the amenities to protect themselves. Although an air conditioning unit or even a window screen could foreseeably

lower the risk of being bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus, this is a privilege not many women in the region can afford.

Insect-repellent is another option, but we can’t forget that cities like São Paulo don’t have a CVS on every other block, being able to buy bug spray isn’t exactly an easy errand. The only stores that still carry repellent are usually fishing stores, but the storeowners, realizing they are the best hope for protecting Brazil’s unborn children, have raised prices so high that the desperate women can’t afford it.

The situation has certainly gotten desperate, which is why some people are turning to DDT, a pesticide that isn’t even allowed in the U.S. because it was found to be responsible for poisoning wildlife, the environment and human health.

The Brazilian government has officially promised to at least try to protect its people by providing insect repellent to low-income women and by deploying its Armed Forces to fight this war against the mosquitos.

It’s a little unclear how the Armed Forces will battle an army of mosquitos, but Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff seems confident in her shaky plan. Even if her plan does take affect, there’s no way it can be fully successful since there is no cure for Zika or microcephaly. And because there is no official link between the two, there are more than one mediums through which Zika is spread such as sexual contact, urine and saliva. In more than one case, the virus has been spread the same way STDs do: through any exchange of bodily fluids. The Brazilian government has urged people to limit kissing.

Luckily, the World Health Organization (WHO) has begun to address the matter into their own framework of responsibilities by declaring a public health emergency in the region. But even so, there’s not much they can do because there is no vaccine on the horizon.

Even if there was, “WHO officials say it could be six to nine months before science proves or disproves any connection between the virus and babies born in Brazil or elsewhere with abnormally small heads.” Whether or not this information makes the situation more or less dire is unclear, but the WHO is currently trying to figure it out.

If Zika is not, in fact, linked to microcephaly, does the search for an eradication of the virus end? If Zika does not wreak havoc on fetus’ development then all Zika is is rash and flu-like symptoms that go away within a month.

These are the types of questions that panicking mothers-to-be have been asking since 2014 when the outbreak began. The only advice public health officials can offer pregnant women is to wear long sleeves and long pants, which isn’t amazing advice to begin with, but it’s especially bad during the muggy and hot Brazilian summers.

The purpose of the public emergency declaration was to get out an international SOS, which it did, but other than raise awareness, there doesn’t seem to be a clear and effective solution.

The Brazilian government is responding too slowly to a virus that is destroying people’s lives before they are even born.

n every election cycle, women’s reproductive rights are brought to the forefront and discussed as a public matter. No unpleasant detail is omitted. While not much can be done to take the debate away from the public eye and make it a private, in-house discussion, there is much to be said about the problematic nature of the conversation itself.

The conversation revolves around the mother and the fetus. The 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child states, “The child needs appropriate legal protection before as well as after birth.” Yet according to the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the right to choice and the right to privacy are inalienable rights. Furthermore, the 1964 Freedom of Choice Act declares that it is the “policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child; terminate a pregnancy prior to fetal viability; or terminate a pregnancy after viability when necessary to protect her life or her health.”

The question then arises: do the rights of the fetus supersede those of the woman carrying it? That is the “abortion question.” In the 1973 case Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court gave a landmark ruling, legalizing abortion under the right to privacy. However, the decision wasn’t absolute — it allowed state regulation of abortion in the third trimester. The law stated that a woman’s right to privacy and her freedom of choice surpass the fetus’ right to life, but only in the first two trimesters.

Personally, I believe that as long as the fetus’ life is dependent on its mother, the mother should decide its future, as well as her own. Furthermore, her choice must lie before the fetus viability period. After the 24th week of pregnancy, the fetus has the capability to survive outside of the mother’s womb, thanks to advances made in modern medicine. But before this phase, the fetus’ survival is entirely contingent on the mother. The right to abort during this stretch should not be taken away.

Based on the precedent set by the law, it is bizarre to see Republicans continuing the fight against abortion. If the Supreme Court explicitly said that the fetus shouldn’t have individual rights exceeding those of its mother during vitality period, why then do conservatives insist on fighting a women’s right to privacy? The answer is as plain as day: sexism.

imposing their ideas, morals and values on women. Further, the decision regarding an unborn child’s life should be made by the person responsible for that life: the mother. It is simply unfair for Congress — which is composed primarily of men — to rip that decision away from women by banning abortions, as the Republican-majority Congress wants to do.

Terminating a pregnancy is a personal and private choice that depends on multiple variables that exist in the carrier or mother’s life, the depth of which cannot be understood by an outsider. How can an outsider, who lacks complete understanding, even attempt to make decisions for the mother? By mistaking abortion for a public and political matter, pro-life conservatives are simply undermining the importance of the mother in the process. Doesn’t society owe that much respect and discretion to the concerned family? The woman is, as she should be, in full control of her body and medical decisions. By waging war against Planned Parenthood, the Republicans are putting women and society at risk.

On Dec. 5 of last year, Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted, “If men were giving birth to babies, there would not be a lot of discussion regarding the right to choose.” If this were reality, the public debate would cease. Hypothetically, pregnant men might be able to fathom the complexity of the situation.

A pregnant man’s right to choice would supersede everything. In that debate, there would be no fetus and its right to life, only the man and his right to choose. With an 80 percent majority of the seats in Congress, men would be able to bury the conversation without a problem. Which raises the question: do the pro-lifers actually even care about right to life? Or is it just a façade under which they continue the archaic and outlived practice of controlling women?

N

o film has ever actually managed to get me on its side faster than Deadpool has. Trailers, pictures and footage all had me convinced that Deadpool was going to most likely be an interminable experience.

Then came the opening credits. We learned that Deadpool was “A movie by Some Assholes” starring “God’s Perfect Idiot” and “A gratuitous cameo.” At which point the film could have been a shot for shot remake of previous Ryan Reynolds flop Green Lantern, and I probably would have still given it a passing grade.

So, let’s thank the maker that Deadpool is a damn sight better than that.

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a mercenary who seems to have finally found his place in life with his loving fiancée Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) when he’s diagnosed with an aggressive and advanced form of cancer.

In an attempt to cure it, he’s recruited for a program that promises to cure his cancer and grant him superhuman abilities by unlocking latent mutant genes.

The program, led by a mutant named Ajax (Ed Skrein), a man as cruel as he is British, is not as it seems, as the goal is to torture the participants until their genes unlock so he can sell the newly created super soldiers

to the highest bidder. The process scars Wade over his entire body, but unlocks mutant abilities to heal anything and everything, as well as to break the fourth wall of reality. Wade manages to escape and, as the mutant anti-hero Deadpool, goes on a rampage to hunt down the man who ruined his life.

Now, that description likely sounds a great deal more dour than the actual film ends up being. Deadpool pitches to your inner 15 year-old boy, for the better and for the worse. It’s a film more than willing to engage in all manner of immaturity, where every clever character-based or meta-joke is accompanied by some variation of a dick joke.

But I’m not necessarily complaining. First, because that style of humor really does show an understanding of the character, which ends up being Deadpool’s greatest asset.

dom, earnestly understands what people love about Deadpool and gives it to them. It gives us a joke-a-minute structure with plenty of fourth-wall break turns to the camera. It gives us immaturity mixed within the pathos. Deadpool understands that to earn new fans, you simply have to understand what drew the original fans to the character.

But second, the immaturity works because on the whole, the film’s jokes hit their mark. Reynolds and T.J. Miller (who plays Weasel) are gifted comic actors saddled with most of the humor in this film, along with a very game Baccarin. There’s a great deal to laugh at, from the opening credits sequence to a hilariously clever twist on a romance montage (featuring a joke about International Women’s Day that still makes me giggle) to the film’s committed awareness of its current place within the superhero genre to Reynolds’ sheer commitment and willingness to wring laughs out of the audience with every line.

Do they all work?

Hell no.

Again, it’s a film that saddles cleverness alongside immaturity and confuses the fact that it can with the fact that it should. Some jokes simply don’t hit, some

seem pointless and some border on being driven into the ground with how often they return to the well to do it again (I’m thinking specifically here of jokes about mutant Colossus and his metal genitals). While the film earns enough goodwill to sail through these rough patches, they tend to remind me of what I feared this film would be more than what it ended up being.

Speaking of largely assuaged fears, Deadpool is the film that finally earns Reynolds leading man status.

While his commitment to the role has never been in question, spending almost a decade trying to take it off the ground and suffering through an ill-fated attempt at the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds’ talents have often been best left in supporting roles, seemingly fated to forever be a supporting actor in the body of a leading man. Here, however, Reynolds shows a deep range and on-screen presence, carrying the film even through those aforementioned rough patch moments.

And he does so not only through the comic and action moments, which are impressive for him in equal measures, but through the dramatic material, the love story between Wade and Vanessa and the fear of returning to her as a scarred monster, which the film often

seems unsure how to address. The film nests it within flashbacks, exchanging the romance with the more immediate comedic and action-oriented material of the present-day of the story. But this leaves the film feeling oddly structured, which is a problem that makes the film oddly rushed. There was legitimate surprise when I realized we were at the ending.

But overall, Deadpool is a question of how on-board you’re willing to get with its character and what you’re doing with him. If, like me, the film wins you over with its weird, teenage-boy charm, then you’re far more likely to be able to get past its flaws than someone who finds the whole exercise rather like listening to nerds riffing in the middle school cafeteria.

It’s a film that feels like it’s for fans, both the ones coming into it as such and the ones the film makes in its opening act.

ne of the unfortunate dimensions of fame is the stark dissonance that can arise between the public perception of an artist’s identity and the artist’s private reality. The former belongs to stifling rumors and public perception of celebrity and stardom, the latter to inward feelings about what it means to be another human being who simply happens to be famous. The inconsistency between these public and private spheres can stage a front for battle — a battle that singer-songwriter Rihanna seems tired of fighting.

phy is characterized by its risqué, freewheeling, popstar feel — the type of music most grandparents today would dismiss as trash before thinking twice about her true talent and diligence as an artist.

In her newest album, ANTI, Rihanna desperately tries to resist the images that have long defined her. ANTI is anti-radio hit, anti-stadium sellouts and anti-celebrity.

It’s as if Rihanna took a long, hard look in the mirror and noticed that she was standing in opposition to herself. The album cover features a preschool Rihanna with

Since signing with Def Jam Recordings at 16, Rihanna has been a household name. Her rise to fame was fast, intense and orchestrated: she released seven albums in eight years, and 13 number one singles followed suit, including debut single “Pon de Replay,” “SOS,” “Umbrella,” “Take a Bow” and “Rude Boy.” Her discogra-

a heavy crown over her eyes. The message is clear: fame is weighty and blinding in a way that the young Rihanna would come to understand all too quickly.

In the opening and standout track, “Consideration,” Rihanna alludes to the dark side of her fame: “When I look outside my window/I can’t

get no peace of mind.” The beat isn’t unlike what fans are used to hearing from Rihanna, but the lyrics are.

“Darling, would you mind giving my reflection a break/ From the pain it’s feeling now?” Herein lies the album’s premise. As the album continues, the moodiness of the lyrics only grows, augmented by her raw, mature voice.

Weighty themes of loneliness, sex and sacrificial relationships run throughout the album, but Rihanna manages to approach them with tenderness.

Rihanna’s relationships have been in the limelight for years; most notably, she is known for being a survivor of domestic abuse from her relationship with Chris Brown. In “Kiss It Better,” a personal favorite of mine, Rihanna is constantly hitting refresh, trying to reload a past relationship. The track is backed by a guitar that is reminiscent of the eighties, the musical elements matching the nostalgia within the lyrics.

In addition to intimate themes, the album presents a large growth in songwriting for Rihanna. For a majority of her career, she has been the delivery voice of pop songwriters, coming in to record whatever was intended to be the next pop hit. On ANTI, she takes a more frontal approach to her own name, holding songwriting credits for most songs on the album.

However, it’s hard to escape the trenches of commercialism when one is considered pop royalty, and although Rihanna attempts to depart from her image, there are parts of the album that seem contrived for radio success. In “WORK,” arguably the album’s most listened to track at the time this article was written, Rihanna collaborates with Drake. The two have been quite the subject of public attention this year: their chemistry is undeniable, but their collaboration seems contradictory to the overall theme of the album.

ANTI is daring in that there are no tracks that would stand alone as flashy pop radio hits in the same way her past albums do.

It attempts to be seamless, and each song strives to contribute to a unified, authentic whole. But, when considered cohesively, the album falls short of lofty expectations. Its lack of predictability teeters on the messy side. Still, Rihanna makes herself vulnerable, and subsequently, the listeners are made to feel closer to her — a huge step forward for an artist built on radio success.

or Atlanta rapper Future, 2015 was a year that most rappers could only dream of. His highly anticipated album, Dirty Sprite 2, received high praise from critics and earned him the number two spot on Complex Magazine’s Best Albums of 2015 list.

It debuted at number one on Billboard’s top 200 and has sold over 344,000 copies.

Later that year, Future collaborated with Drake on What a Time to Be Alive, a mixtape that earned him his second number one on Billboard’s top 200 and helped him build up his stratospheric level of popularity.

Two months into this year, Future released EVOL, an 11-song album that took some of the elements that made Dirty Sprite 2 so popular and built on them. When producing it Future stuck to the recipe: a druggy aesthetic, intoxicating beats, syrupy lyrics, lethargic vocals, dystopian imagery and captivating hooks. EVOL is Future’s second major commercial project, released only a couple of weeks after the release of Purple Reign, a surprise mixtape that has some enjoyable tracks on it but overall seems rushed and unfinished, on DJ Khaled’s Beats 1 radio show.

On EVOL, Future engages with mostly the same themes as he did on Dirty Sprite 2 and Purple Reign: sex (this is obvious upon reading the album’s tracklist — see “In Her Mouth”), drugs that most of us probably haven’t even heard of and, overall, hedonism. In engaging

with these themes, Future achieves the same drugged-out aesthetic that made Dirty Sprite 2 such a success. However, in focusing his songs on indulging in debauchery, Future left out some of the themes that made Dirty Sprite 2 so relevant.

Love, hate, heartbreak and self-loathing are almost nowhere to be found on EVOL. In tracks like “Lie to Me” and “Low Life,” Future attempts to evoke feelings of longing and passion but doesn’t really pull it off as well as he did on tracks that dealt with similar emotions on Dirty Sprite 2.

On “Lie to Me,” Future openly states that he is still dealing with some of the issues and insecurities that he addressed on previous projects: “I got way way too many issues/Some are coming out on the internet/Baby girl sayin’ that she miss you/Is it too late for a comeback?”

These declarations are underscored by thematic discrepancies throughout “Lie to Me;” for the majority of the track he describes himself as a giant and a boss and only briefly touches on some of the song’s more candid lyrics.

“Low Life,” the album’s standout song, does a better job at emoting. With the help of Abel from The Weeknd, Future is able to captivate listeners with a catchy melody reminiscent of The Weeknd’s “Often,” stellar production and classic Future lines (“I turn the Ritz into a lean house” and “Roaches everywhere, like we forgot to take the trash out”).

Before the album’s release, Future noted on Twitter that EVOL is love spelled backwards, (symbolizing a rejection of love); this would be consistent with the album’s rejection of all things that are not related to sex, drugs and money. This album isn’t really about Future’s emotions; it’s about how Future feels as he sips on dirty sprite and embarks on his gaudy nightlife escapades. That being said, I believe that an album doesn’t need to be introspective to be good, or that an artist needs to go into long rants about his feelings for an album to be emotive.

An album can also be good because it’s fun, enjoyable and well crafted — three things EVOL most definitely is. Even though EVOL lacks introspection, because of straightforward lyrics and consistently vain themes, it is still a remarkable project from a remarkable artist who is at the peak of his career.

One of the most attractive things about the album was its production; Future enlisted some of Atlanta’s best producers (Metro Boomin, Southside, Zaytoven and DJ Spinz, just to name a few) to create an eclectic sound that elevated the album’s hard hitting beats through complex melodies and intricate instrumental layering.

by DJ Spinz that uses an 80s sounding guitar riff sample and melds it with a trap drum sequence to create a trap heavy hitter, or “Xany Family,” where Future invites listeners to partake in some semi-

illegal activities to the melody of a hypnotic and illusory beat. On “Maybach,” Future raps “They wasn’t lying on me/I get better and better with time, don’t I?” Although this may not be necessarily true when comparing EVOL to Dirty Sprite 2, it is certainly true when looking back to his earlier projects. Future’s music has come a long way from his Honest days.

His themes are more decadent, his beats are more striking, his lyrics are more evocative, his flow is tighter and his overall persona has become a thing of legend.

Future’s lack of sonic and thematic ambition on EVOL resulted in a lesser Dirty Sprite 2. The album is a testament to the anarchic and decadent life of a rapper enjoying the spoils of a successful year, but the arrogance implicit in those themes makes Future miss the mark that made Dirty Sprite 2 such a great album.

Future’s success in the past two years has been one for the history books.

EVOL is Future’s third project in 15 months to hit number one on Billboard’s top 200. By now Future’s fame is almost unparalleled, and his title as king of Atlanta hip-hop is uncontested. In the long run, EVOL’s release probably won’t be a pivotal moment in Future’s career, but it’s a welcome escape into the world only a rapper riding on the coattails of his last success can know.

Future will perform in Atlanta at The Tabernacle on March 4.

Mardi Gras

T

housands of people flooded to the streets of New Orleans last week for Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday” in English.

In fact, the city of New Orleans has become almost synonymous with the festivities. When I was little, I heard about Mardi Gras and its lavish carnivals and celebrations from my parents, but it was not until this year’s festivities that I actually experienced the event for myself — and it certainly lives up to the hype. People of all ages visit the Creole city, specifically Bourbon Street, for the festival and the good memories that come with it.

Thanks to Emory’s “close” proximity to New Orleans, many students travel down south for the weekend to celebrate with their friends and thousands of strangers. What makes Mardi Gras so special? According to College sophomore Areeta Shah, she decided to take the seven-hour road trip

because it was always a dream of hers.

“I went to Mardi because I saw all my friends were going and having such a great time in prior years, and I wanted to experience it for myself,” Shah said.

Shah noted the excitement of “being in a crowd of people that are equally as excited to have this experience” as a major part of her love for Mardi Gras.

To get to New Orleans, Emory students drove down with friends, took public buses or flew to make a quick and easy trip. For me and many of my close friends, the drive down to NOLA was part of the experience.

Yes, seven hours in a car driving through Alabama and Mississippi is not the most entertaining and gorgeous drive, but it was worth it. Airlines and hotels are notorious for driving up the prices of flights and rooms around the time of Mardi Gras, so driving and paying $25 to fill up a tank of gas was definitely the more economic option.

College junior Rachel Klein decided to return to Mardi Gras for a second time because “it is one of the most

fun weekends — people come from all over, including [her] friends from other colleges. Everyone there is so happy and carefree, making it easy to have a good time.” Klein also said she believes that her experience was more enjoyable this year because she is now 21 and was able to visit the famous Pat O’Briens Bar. College sophomore Tahira Saalik said that Emory students go to Mardi Gras because “It’s a great experience with friends, and New Orleans is relatively close by for the trip.” Although Saalik was not able to go this year, she intends to visit the city in the near future.

The tradition of Emory students traveling to New Orleans for Mardi Gras has extended even to freshmen; however, Shah notes that it may not be the best option to go during your first year at Emory. “I think that freshman year is not the time to go because I was still trying to settle into a new lifestyle and it is very difficult on Bourbon Street to get into bars underage.”

College freshman Carly Lapidus does have intentions to attend Mardi Gras in the future, but says her plans did not work out this year. “I didn’t go to Mardi Gras this year because

I didn’t think that a lot of freshmen would go,” Lapidus said. “By the time I thought about going, it was too late to make plans or reservations. It definitely looks like a lot of fun roaming around Bourbon Street and celebrating with friends, so I plan on going in the future.”

With rising prices and time away from campus, some students may not see Mardi Gras as a worthwhile experience. Shah said that she feels the only downside to going to Mardi Gras was that “Emory literally moved from one state to another; however, I will never regret going because I loved the energy and spirit of the festival.”

In terms of my own experiences, I can agree with Shah on many of her points. It was a desire of mine to make it down to NOLA at least once during my time at Emory, and the weekend did not disappoint. I enjoyed my time traversing down Bourbon Street and interacting with friends and strangers who all were there to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Getting to walk down Bourbon Street and seeing plenty of people dressed in the most outrageous, yet fun clothing was very inspirational — Mardi Gras is a time to simply let go and have fun.

Emory students make up winning L’Oréal case competition team Mengyao Yuan | Staff Writer

A

team of three Emory students has advanced in the L’Oréal Brandstorm 2016, a marketingbased competition for students to offer their creative marketing ideas to one of L’Oréal’s international brands, La Roche-Posay, a makeup and skincare cosmetics line, which is the focus case for competition this year. The Emory team will compete against teams from universities across the nation this April in New York City.

Julia Porpora, assistant manager of campus recruitment at L’Oréal, and Kathy Cuevas, assistant vice president of digital engagement and campus recruitment at L’Oréal, hosted the selection at Emory Goizueta Business School on Feb. 9, 2016.

“I really look forward to seeing creative marketing solutions from different teams,” Porpora said. “It will be an interesting challenge because La Roche-Posay is a rather new player in the cosmetics industry.”

Three Emory teams, “E-836,” “Branding Babes” and “Nadir Bound,” presented their innovative solutions as to how to attract young consumers in the 15-to-25 age demographic to La Roche-Posay. Presenters explored growth opportunities for this currently underpromoted ventures by offering their SWOT analysis on La Roche-Posay, a matrix that evaluates strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and potential threats of a business.

Goizueta Business School junior Rachel Gilson from team “Branding Babes” acknowledged the challenge for promoting the brand as she said in the presentation that “[she doesn’t] think many people know about La Roche-Posay.”

there are numerous substitutes or competitive brands available. However, as described by B-school junior Jing Zhu from team “E-836,” La Roche-Posay has many competitive advantages and opportunities as a new brand.

“I think emerging young Chinese customers will be the targeted group for the marketing campaign of La Roche-Posay,” Zhu explained to the judges. “The air pollution in China concerns a fair amount of citizens who suffer from all kinds of pollutants which damage their skin. La Roche-Posay can really work on developing products that specifically nourish people’s skin therapeutically [in the Chinese context].”

After the presentation, Porpora said that Zhu’s idea was well-developed and took into account the external business environment, which has a great impact on a new brand, but she also appreciated the ideas presented by other teams.

“I am really impressed by the smart marketing ideas students came up with,” Porpora said.

“Each team has its own unique way of presenting – each has its edge.”

According to Cuevas, selecting a winner proved to be a tough process, because the three teams in the semi-final round were winnowed down from a pool of 20 qualified teams. The teams were comprised of sophomores and juniors concentrating in Marketing

and Consulting at Goizueta.

After evaluating the three teams’ business acumen and their creative ideas, Porpora and Cuevas finally decided to offer E-836, consisting of B-school juniors Echo Zeng, Jing Zhu and Yuqiao Tang, the opportunity to represent Emory in the national competition.

This will be Emory’s first team to participate in the national competition.

“It was totally unexpected,” Zeng said. “The only thing my teammates and I thought [about] was how to pitch our solution in an interesting and memorable way.”

According to Tang, the whole team is “really excited to compete with talented teams from peer universities

... a marketing-based competition for students to offer their creative marketing ideas to one of L’Oréal’s international brands ... such as the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Texas, Austin and George Washington University,” and the experience will be enriching “no matter the result.”

Porpora and Cuevas will help E-836 draft their business plan, do market research and practice presentation skills before the three compete on the national stage.

rowing up in a small southern town in northwest Florida, I was not exposed to a wide variety of cuisines. Going out to dinner meant the Italian ristorante in the plaza, the seafood restaurant on the marina or the wing place off of the main highway.

Variety was not the spice of my life — that distinction was held by the Tex-Mex Tijuana Flats situated next to the McDonald’s.

Coming to Atlanta revealed an entirely different world to my relatively inexperienced tastebuds, and I continue to find new things halfway through junior year.

These are my two restaurant recommendations if you want to experience excitingly different and enlightening foods.

These are the spicy ones.

Messi’s Cafe and Lounge For those that are not used to eating with their hands, Messi’s will offer a quick crash course on how to get it done. A relatively new Ethiopian restaurant located in Emory Village that can be reached by taking the stairs adjacent to Saba down the side of the building, Messi’s features a decent variety of Ethiopian dishes that have all been immensely satisfying.

All dishes on the menu are organized into three categories: Stews (Wat), Veggies and Meats (Tibs), all of which are served with a hearty portion of injera, a spongy Ethiopian bread that functions as utensils, covering the platter on which the food is served.

Ethiopian food has a reputation as one of the spicier cuisines out there, and while none of its dishes include chopped up ghost pepper, it can certainly give your sinuses a workout. Keep open cuts on your hand covered or out of food’s way as well, because you will be using your hands if you eat everything here in the traditional fashion: using injera to bundle up a particularly large bite of food and then ferrying it cleanly into one’s mouth.

If I go on the weekend, I order doro wat, a chicken stew that Messi’s calls the national dish of Ethiopia. It is lightly spiced and fragrant, and the chicken is always tender and never chewy. If I need something spicy or happen to pop in on a weekday, I invariably order lamb awaze tibs, a spicy chopped meat dish. Injera mops up the juices and sauces of any dish and, when well-utilized, not one bit of food will be wasted. One stew or meat dish is enough for one person, especially with liberal amounts of bread.

Make your way down to Messi’s the next open lunch slot you have — it is not expensive for the amount of food and makes for a memorable adventure for those bored with their chicken McNuggets.

Masterpiece Probably the most distant on today’s list of destinations, Masterpiece, a Sichuan Chinese eatery, presents its customers with a whole host of flavors that I had never before experienced.

Located on Buford Highway out towards Duluth, the small strip mall-based restaurant necessitates a healthy 25 to 30 minute drive from campus, but the food and their well-accoladed chef are definitely worth the drive.

Sichuan cuisine originates from a province in southwestern China and relies heavily on a style of spicing entirely different from the burn of good Thai food or the many competing flavors present in many Indian curries.

The Sichuan pepper demarcates Sichuan cooking from the others; this pepper is not spicy hot but instead numbs the mouth and leaves a tongue-ona-nine-volt-battery feeling in its immediate wake, setting the stage for the spicy hot chilis present in a given dish to burn even hotter.

As far as dishes to order, I have a few to recom-

First, the chicken with dry chilis was fantastic and has a satisfying, low-key burn that is not overwhelming but amazingly tasty.

Second, the Sichuan hot and sour soup has to be the best of its genus, bar none. I have never before had a bowl that was spicy, tangy and thick without tasting or feeling of spoiled cough syrup. This stuff is hot and it alone merits the drive.

Finally, for my last recommendation, I ask for you to try their spicy tripe dish. Labeled one of the spiciest items on the menu and holding one of the least appetizing names on the list spicy pig intestine is easily the ruling monarch of the place. I loved it, and if you have hesitations about eating intestine, get over them. Your mouth will thank you.

As an added note, Masterpiece also serves Sichuan hot pot, probably the most famous and well-knownin-the-West dish out of the region.

I highly recommend trying it here if you get the chance because it is certainly the best I have ever had, but I believe you will get to experience the welltrained chef ’s skills most poignantly in his other dishes.

File, Forte Honored by UAA The junior pair of pitcher Brittany File and first baseman Taylor Forte were both recognized by the UAA for their play in the Eagles’ 3n2 event this past weekend. File started three games and registered 15 innings of action while crafting an ERA of 1.80 in addition to 25 strikeouts. Perhaps even more impressively, File threw her second career no-hitter vs. Huntingdon College (Ala.) in a game in which the Eagles won 7-0. Forte hit four .692 over the four game event, collecting nine hits in 13 trips to the plate. In addition, she scored a teamhigh of six runs and paced the squad with seven RBIs.

he Emory softball team started off the season by hosting the 3n2 Elite Event this past weekend. The event consisted of two teams: Agnes Scott College (Ga.) and Huntingdon College (Ala.). Both played Emory twice, once on Saturday the 13th and once Sunday the 14th. Emory crushed its competition this weekend, winning all four games by at least four runs.

In the Eagles’ first game on Saturday, they took on Agnes Scott College and easily won 19-1. The game ended in the fifth inning due to mercy rule. Emory had 17 hits led by junior first baseman Taylor Forte and senior third baseman Melody Carter.

The most impressive part of Emory’s opener was their eleventh run fourth inning that clinched the win.

Emory’s second game Saturday was against Huntingdon College, and from the start, it was clear that junior pitcher Brittany File was going to dominate. File was absolutely brilliant, as she threw a no hitter over seven innings of work, leading Emory to a 7-0 win.

File was locked in all game and struck out 14 batters. She never lost control and threw a game that few others are able to. This was File’s second career no hitter after throwing a perfect game against Rhodes College (Tenn.) just last year.

In the win against Huntingdon, Forte shined once again by going three for four

with a double. Junior right fielder Amy Wray also had a double and two runs batted in to lead Emory to their second consecutive victory.

For the Eagle’s first game on Sunday, they had a rematch against Huntingdon College. The game ended with an Eagle win sand a final score of 7-3.

The lady Eagles had 14 hits and were helped out by freshman shortstop Cassie Baca and outfielder Jenna Wilson who had three and two hits, respectively. File started the game and picked up her third win after throwing four innings and fanning seven hitters.

For the final game of the weekend, Emory once again mercy ruled Agnes Scott College by crushing them 15-3.

Emory had another offensive outburst, collecting 15 hits. One of the hitters to highlight is freshman catcher Tori Risner, who had two hits with four runs batted in, including her first career home run.

Sophomore pitcher Audrey Weller got the win, throwing four solid innings and striking out two.

Emory’s softball team plays again next weekend, as they will host DePauw University (Ind.) and Averett University (Va.) in another 3n2 event on Saturday, Feb. 20 and Sunday, Feb. 21.

his past weekend was the start of the Emory men’s tennis season. On Saturday, they faced Dalton State College (Ga.). On Sunday, they played against Georgia Gwinett College and Georgia State University.

This weekend was significant for all players, but more so for freshmen, as they played their first real matches of their college careers.

“As a freshman, it’s nerve racking,” explained freshman Jonathan Jemison, a freshman on the team who has had to immediately handle a big starting role. “People [are] cheering for you and against you.

It’s scary.”

Against Dalton State, Jemison and senior captain Rafe Mosetick were each able to win all of their singles matches. Combined with impressive efforts from junior Aman Manji in singles, as well as from Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding in doubles, the Eagles came away with a 6-3 win.

Jemison talked to the Wheel about the difference between college matches and the leagues he had played in before.

“I used to just play people my age,” Jemison said. “Since I’m high in the lineup, I’m playing juniors and seniors — I’m playing guys who are 21 and 22, but I’m just 18.

Everybody hits the ball harder. The only thing I [have] going for me is that my strokes are cleaner and I’m quicker. I have to use that to my advantage.”

Going into Sunday against very strong teams, Coach John Browning explained that his expectations were not to win, but to tune up.

of his players, what spots they fit best in and what rotations are most effective.

Sunday presented some extremely tough sets for Emory. In addition to the high level of competition, several Eagles were sidelined with injuries on top of the wear and tear from the game the day before. Against Georgia Gwinnett, the number one ranked team in the NAIA, Emory fell 8-1.

Later that day, Jemison was able to continue his strong play in his return to action versus Georgia State — an NCAA Division 1 team — where he beat his opponent in singles.

However, other than some lategame success by the doubles pair of David Omsky and Andrew Harrington, the Eagles failed to win any of the rest of their matchups in singles and doubles, losing 7-2 overall.

“We could’ve gotten blown out.

The positive was that we competed,” Browning said after the match.

Jemison mentioned that his coach and his teammates really stress the importance of team unity, controlling each person’s ego and staying mentally strong.

“Whether you’re the last guy in the lineup or the first guy in the lineup, you have to treat everybody with respect,” he said. “You’re not by yourself anymore. When I was playing in the juniors, it was just me and my dad. I didn’t have a team rooting for me growing up. I really appreciate that now.”

The Eagles will look to improve as they travel to Cleveland, Ohio for the ITA National Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 19 through Sunday, Feb. 21.

SPORTS Final homestand nets two wins

T

he Emory women’s basketball team pulled off two wins this weekend against New York University (NY) and Brandeis University (Mass.). The Eagles topped NYU by a score of 65 to 59 and defeated Brandeis 64 to 48.

The Eagles managed to hold off a second half resurgence from the Bobcats thanks in part to a strong first half, which saw Emory lead 31-21 at break. Emory had four players who reached double figures, led by sophomore forward Dumebi Egbuna with 17 points. Junior guards Shellie Kaniut (10 points) and Michelle Bevan (13 points) and senior guard Khadijah Sayyid (10 points, eight rebounds) joined her in that achievement.

Neither team shot particularly well, although both teams shot better than 84 percent from the free throw line. The Eagles made 21 of their 25 foul shots (84 percent), which turned out to make a big impact in the game. NYU only attempted 13 free throws, but they made 11 of those.

Emory beat Brandeis 64 to 48, in a game that the Eagles dominated from start to finish.

The Eagles were led in part by a strong performance by Sayyid, who led the team in scoring and finished with 16 points and six rebounds.

Egbuna (12 points) and junior guard Fran Sweeney (10 points) were the only other Eagles who scored in double figures. Senior guard Ilene Tsao had an all around strong game, finishing with seven points, seven assists and six rebounds.

After struggling from the field against NYU, Emory bounced back by shooting a solid 45 percent on 22 of 48 shootings. The Eagles also made it to the charity stripe at a good clip, where they made 13 free throws on 17 attempts.

Emory also had a nice game on the glass, where they outrebounded the Owls 35 to 30.

The Eagles will retake the court on the road this coming weekend, where they will face Carnegie Mellon (Penn.) on Friday Feb. 19 and Case Western Reserve (OH) on Sunday Feb. 21.

Men split senior weekend

T

he Emory men’s basketball split a pair of games at home this weekend, falling to New York University (NY) 73 to 56, and defeating Brandeis University (Mass.) 6658.

After starting the game strong and leading the first half at 34-30, the Eagles fell apart in the second. NYU nearly doubled Emory’s point total 43-22. The lone bright spot for the team was junior guard Jonathan Terry, who finished the game with 19 points on a seven of 15 shooting night. The only other Eagle in double figures was sophomore forward Adam Gigax, who finished the game with 13 points on five for 15 shooting.

The Eagles were destroyed on the glass, and that was a big reason why the team struggled in the second half. NYU pulled down 47 rebounds compared to only 26 for the Eagles. In addition to struggling on the boards, the team had a rough shooting night as well. Emory shot 20 for 64 from the field for an anemic 31.3 percent. Things weren’t better from behind the arc,

where the Eagles shot 10 for 37, or 27 percent.

NYU by comparison, shot above 50 percent from the field.

The team bounced back from their tough loss against NYU to beat Brandeis by a score of 66 to 58.

Gigax provided a huge spark off the bench, as he scored 22 points, on an efficient eight for 16 shooting, to go with his eight rebounds. Senior forwards Davis Rao and Will Trawick also scored in double figures, with 11 and 14 points respectively.

The Eagles were able to fix their shooting and rebounding woes from their game against NYU. Emory shot 45.1 percent on 23 of 51 shooting, including 37 percent from three (seven for 19).

In addition, the team outrebounded Brandeis by a 31 to 26 margin. Overall the game was a solid bounce back after a tough loss.

The men take the court again this weekend when they face Carnegie Mellon (Penn.) on Friday, Feb. 19 and Case Western Reserve (OH) on Sunday, Feb. 21.

oth the men’s and women’s track and field teams turned in strong performances at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham (Ala.) on Friday and Saturday, with two Eagles breaking indoor school records.

On the women’s side, senior Aileen Rivell earned her place in the Emory record books with a dazzling performance in the 3,000-meter run, posting a time of 10:03.38, which broke the old record by over four seconds. The time was good enough to place second overall in the event.

For the men, sophomore Daniel Pietsch ran a blistering 48.09 in the 400m dash, which not only topped the school record by almost half a second, but also earned him the fastest time in Division III this season.

Although the meet wasn’t scored, both teams had a number of strong individual races against tough competition. The invitational included runners from a number of Division I schools, including the University of Georgia, the University of Alabama and Texas State University.

The women’s team dominated the 5,000-meter run, with sophomore Tru Powell and junior Sophie Cemaj crossing the line in first and second, respectively. Senior Julie Williamson ran in the top heat in the 800-meter run and finished in fifth among a crowded field with a time of 2:15.25.

A couple of freshmen turned in big performances as well. Freshman Clare Ubersax finished ninth in the mile run with a time of 5:14.01, leading a crowd of underclassman Emory runners including sophomore Gabrielle Stravach (19th) and Gabrielle Rudolph (21st).

Freshman Amanda Martin finished ninth in the 3,000-meter run, behind the record-setting Rivell and just ahead of Emory sophomore Abigail Hotaling, who finished eleventh.

The men’s team saw sophomore Max Brown win the mile run with a time of 4:11.74, with junior Michael McBane not far behind, finishing tenth. Sophomore Shane Sullivan grabbed second place in the 5,000-meter run, while junior Michael Sisario was tenth.

The Emory men performed well in the field events as well. Senior Max Hoberman finished eighth in the triple jump, and freshman Zachary Lembersky earned tenth place in the weight throw.

The Eagles will travel to Sewanee (Tenn.) on Friday, Feb. 19 for the Sewanee Indoor Invitational. It’ll be the final meet for both teams before the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships, hosted by New York University (NY) on Feb. 27 and 28.
