AEPi house to be torn down Emily Sullivan | News Editor

he Alpha Epsilon Pi house at 17 Eagle Row will be torn down in summer 2016, according to Emory’s Division of Campus Life.

The process may leave AEPi without a house for a couple of years, but AEPi members may be able to build a new house in the same location if they are able to raise the remaining $3.25 million needed to fund construction.

“At this time, nothing will replace the [house] at 17 Eagle Row that AEPi currently occupies,” Eric Bymaster, the associate vice president of finance, operations and administration for the Division of Campus Life, wrote in an email to the Wheel.

The new house illustrated in AEPi’s feasibility study costs about $5.4 million, according to a brochure on the Emory AEPi chapter’s website. The University has allocated $1.75 million toward the house and alumni have contributed $600,000.

“The original plan was to demolish the house this past summer … but after discussions with AEPi leadership, it was agreed upon to delay the project until next summer,” according to Bymaster.

Actual conversations about replacing the AEPi house have been ongoing for several years, said Scott Rausch, assistant dean and director of Residence Life.

“[AEPi members] have been fortunate enough to secure safe housing on campus for the past few years, but with a number of new fraternities joining Emory’s Greek community and others returning to the Row, the future of Epsilon stands in question,” according to the brochure.

The house’s current situation is similar to that of the torn down McTyeire Hall, which was built under codes that are now outdated, Rausch said. In both cases, it costs more to repair the house than to replace it.

Rausch added that nobody who lives in the house is in imminent danger. Past housing condition concerns of all Emory residences have included a lack of internal fire suppression systems and access for people with disabilities.

Rausch said he thinks that AEPi members are accepting but not completely OK with the situation.

“Do I think they’re ecstatic about it? No, but I think they understand that they have to make the decision,” he said.

However, the idea for the new structure will ultimately have positive effects, he added.

“They know they need a new house; they know the current house is not going to cut it.”

Byron Azizi said that no one in the fraternity is concerned, referring to the fact that the demolition of the house has been in talks for several years.

“We don’t think that the University would really want us to get screwed over … by knocking down the house and letting us become freelancers, roaming around and trying to find housing for next year,” Azizi said.

The house was renovated this past summer with new carpeting and wall paint, Azizi said, but the structure was left alone.

AEPi may be placed in a different house on campus, where the fraternity members would still be able to host their regular social events and recruitment processes.

Azizi said that, in his opinion, the AEPi house is the least aesthetically pleasing out of Emory’s fraternity houses.

However, he also emphasized that the structure is homey and encourages unity among AEPi members.

Regardless of the housing outcome for AEPi members, Bymaster said that he expects for members to remain active on Emory’s campus.

“As with all student organizations on campus, Emory expects AEPi to continue contributing positively to the campus community.”

Emory students protest for undocumented students

Emory joined Georgia college students to silently dissent a Board of Regents policy at a state meeting

ndocumented students from Freedom University linked arms and raised fists with documented students from University of Georgia, Georgia State and Emory University to silently protest the Board of Regents Policy 4.1.6 – a law which bans undocumented students from Georgia public universities.

The law, instituted by the University System of Georgia in 2011, prohibits undocumented students from attending public universities regardless of the students’ residential status, academic standing or status as a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which issues undocumented students a renewable deferred action status if they arrive in the United States as a minor .

Access to in-state tuition is also prohibited.

About 20 undocumented students stood next to their documented-student allies in the front and to the sides of the room a few minutes after the Board of Regents’ meeting started. Initially, sophomore Samantha Keng said that they were ignored, and the roughly dozen members of the board continued with the meeting without addressing the protestors.

Sophomore Jonathan Peraza commented that the discomfort in the room was ever-present.

“The audience would look at us, make eye contact and they would look away,” Peraza said. “It was especially hard for them to look at us.”

Peraza said, despite the discomfort, only a few of the approximately 75 members in the audience approached them.

They saw that the board members, after noticing the numbers “4.1.6” taped over the undocumented students’ mouths, whispered to each other and Googled the numbers on their phones, according to Keng.

“To me, it’s sad that the people who make the policies in Georgia don’t know it,” Keng said. “They have to Google it?

Why are you making them if you don’t know what you’re talking about?”

The protestors stood silently, unchanging through the breaks in the meeting. When the meeting reconvened, the Board of Regents passed a new rule that everyone in the meeting must be in a seat. “[They told us] if you don’t have a seat, you can’t be in the room, which was a clear shot at us because none of us had a seat,” Keng said.

After approximately 40 minutes, Georgia State Patrol, police from the capital and building security arrived at the meeting, and the students were asked to leave.

The students complied, and no arrests took place.

Both Peraza and Keng said that they also were struck by the demographics of the room.

“It is a room of old white men, and it’s scary to me that they’re the ones making decisions about education in Georgia,” Keng said. “But it also makes total sense that the reason why the ban exists is because it was [from] a room full of white men calling the shots.”

College junior Lamija Grbic and College senior Nowmee Shehad complimented Emory’s policies in dealing with undocumented students as a private university.

However, both felt that other universities should change their policies.

“We are proud of what Emory has done in recognizing undocumented students and providing them with financial aid, but the issue is a lot larger than Emory and Georgia,” Grbic said. “We want to do whatever it takes to be supportive of undocumented students until their rights are fully recognized in the state.”

ackie Cruz, a cast member of Orange Is the New Black, addressed roughly 500 Emory students during College Council’s (CC) third annual “Culture Shock this past Friday, speaking about the struggles she overcame to become an actress.

Cruz moved to the United States with her mother when she was 15 years old. Since then, she has been named one of The Hollywood Reporter’s “Top Latino Powerhouses in Hollywood Under 40,” and in 2010, she released her EP Hollywood Gypsy. Cruz, who plays Flaca, is set to become a series regular on Orange Is the New Black.

Cruz’s life was rife with obstacles. In her speech, she discussed her transition from the Dominican Republic to Hollywood and a subsequent need to feel accepted. She also walked the audience through the struggles of a three-day-long coma following a car accident.

In telling her story, Cruz encouraged students to persevere through everything,

Additionally, Cruz said that she hopes to use her experiences to help others, especially

“Just seeing my peers demonstrate their excitement further convinces me that we absolutely made the right choice,” Weinstein wrote in an email to the Wheel.

College sophomore Jonathan Peraza said that he was glad to have had the opportunity to hear a prominent Latina actress speak at Emory. “[Culture Shock] was a point of celebration for me as a Latino,” Peraza said. “In many ways, [Culture Shock] is a chance for other people … to be exposed to other organizations that add to the diversity on campus.”

He added that he hopes to see more culturally diverse speakers come to Emory’s campus.

ames M. Cox Jr. Professor of Journalism Hank Klibanoff has joined the ranks of founder of CNN Ted Turner and distinguished Civil Rights Movement reporter Claude Sitton in Atlanta Press Club (APC) Hall of Fame for his work not only as a journalist, but also as a professor, investigator and author.

Klibanoff has risen the ladder in the journalism world from a newspaper boy to the managing editor of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Now as former head of the journalism department and current director of the Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases Project, Klibanoff has worked towards and emphasized the freedom and equality of press in his work.

Rights Struggle, and the Awakening of a Nation – a book that won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2007 – Klibanoff furthers his ideas about discrimination. The book covers the African American Civil Rights Movement, particularly the role of the press in shaping communication and awareness of the movement.

After his bachelor’s degree in English, Klibanoff changed his mind and went on to pursue journalism in graduate school at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in the 1960s. His master’s degree helped secure his first job for a newspaper in Mississippi, and his career took off from there.

The event took place in the InterContinental Buckhead Hotel in Atlanta. Along with Klibanoff, three other noteworthy journalists were inducted: Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Denis O’Hayer and Dick Pettys.

The crowd consisted of friends, family and colleagues of the inductees.

“I don’t see this [award] as a culmination of my work,” Klibanoff said. “I see it as an incentive to just do more and keep going and going and going.”

mory has experienced a drastic spike in fraudulent calls from individuals who claim to be associated with the federal government, according to the Emory Police Department (EPD).

Over the past year, there have been 70 incidents reported to the EPD in which a caller claims to be some type of government agent, such as IRS officials and FBI agents, according to EPD Records Manager Edward Shoemaker. Most of these calls contain messages from unknown fraud perpetrators, who threaten to arrest people for failing to pay money that they supposedly owe to federal government agencies. The callers have also impersonated University department members, including those of the EPD. “These are people who are taking advantage of their ability to pose as authorities,” said Suzanne Onorato, assistant vice president for community.

Director of Student Conduct Julia Thompson expressed concern for the growing prevalence of these sorts of scams. She has seen at least five EPD reports suggesting that Emory students received fraudulent calls, she wrote in an email to the Wheel.

Gov. impersonators scam students with fradulent calls that she was in her apartment at Emory Point when she received a telephone call from a male with an accent and who said he worked for the FBI. He told her that she was under investigation, and that if she did not pay overdue taxes, she would face imminent arrest.

When she demanded to talk to another officer to verify that the caller worked for the FBI, he became aggressive, told her she was going to be arrested and disconnected the line. The caller ID indicated that the call came from a telephone number assigned to the office of the FBI. While the perpetrators have not been caught, the EPD is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter, Onorato said.

The EPD has allocated all cases involving the scam to one detective, who is currently investigating the issue, according to Captain Cheryl Elliott of the EPD. Elliott added that this problem is not unique to Emory, but it is increasingly becoming a nationwide trend.

“Detectives contact the persons who have reported the calls and compare each case, in an effort to determine similarities in the calls being received on our campus to the nationwide scams,” Elliott wrote in an email to the Wheel.

The cause of the recent rise in scams can be attributed to an increased access to technology, according to Onorato.

Associate Professor of Political Science and Institute Director Andra Gillespie and Institute Assistant Director Kali-Ahset Amen aim to transform the

They are seeking scholars who study race and ethnicities as well as those that study the intersectionality of race with gender, religion, class and sexuality for the Visiting Fellows Program, which brings scholars to Emory from schools across the country. “[The program in the institute] is a great opportunity for scholars on campus who are doing research about race to share ideas, build new knowledge and

“Emory University students have reported callers impersonating the police department with the caller ID displaying 404-727-6115, the Emory Police non-emergency number,” she said. “Students and others have also received calls where the FBI number is used, or [that of] their local police department.”

She urged students to be vigilant about scams.

“If you receive this type of call, do not provide the caller with any personal information, and do not send any type of payment,” she said.

Students receiving a potentially fraudulent call should contact the formal organization with which the caller claims to be affiliated, and verify their identity before giving them any personal information,” Onorato added.

“Use common sense. Be more cautious.”

Organizations would only tell people this sort of information in an formal way, such as through a letter with IRS certification, she said.

“If someone’s asking for information, there’s probably a reason for that,” she said. “It’s always better to be more careful in these situations.”

Amen explained that the re-launch of this program is urgent because America needs solid, evidence-based research that addresses the racial challenges in society. The re-launch will include more evidence-based research opportunities for undergraduate students, speaker series and panel talks.

This year, the Institute hosted professors from the City College of New York, Georgia State University and Rutgers University as well as its first dialogue on the Voting Rights Act at 50 on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Next semester, the initiative will have speakers from Princeton University and Stanford University as well as a symposium on the relationship between Southern and African American history and a lecture on civil rights leader W.E.B. Du Bois. “[The Institute] is a great opportunity for scholars to learn about race and dif-

ferences in the United States,” Gillespie said.

The Visiting Fellows Program was intended for post-graduate students and existing professors, but undergraduate students can now take classes taught by the Institute’s fellows, according to Gillespie. New programs in the Institute will provide other ways for undergraduate students to participate.

The Institute was established within Emory College in 2007 to focus on the legacy of the modern civil rights movement.

In 2011, the death of the Institute’s founder, Rudolph Byrd, left the Institute temporarily without a leader. Tyrone Forman, a former associate professor in Emory’s Department of Sociology, took over for Byrd but left the role last year.

Gillespie said the re-launch will also utilize the funds left in the program’s grant, including those funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

wo exhibits celebrating the stories of distinguished African American female intellectuals in the 20th century are now open for public viewing in Emory’s Robert W. Woodruff Library.

“The exhibits reveal more about the lives of several women who have made significant contributions,” said Kathryn Dixson, Woodruff Library exhibitions manager. “Knowing more of these stories creates greater understanding of and empathy with others.”

The exhibits “Revealing Her Story: Documenting African American Women Intellectuals” and “Pearl Cleage: A Time for Reflection” comprise two walls of posters on the second level of the library.

Dixson believes the exhibits provide insight into the lives and works of nine writers, musicians and artists: Pearl Cleage, Delilah Jackson, Samella S. Lewis, Almena Lomax, May Miller, Undine Smith Moore, Geneva Southall, Mildred Thompson and Sarah E. Wright. Each of these women were chosen for their contributions to their respective fields.

One of the two exhibits is dedicated to Pearl Cleage, a novelist, playwright and activist. She has written columns for numerous Atlanta publications, and her novels have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list and Oprah’s Book Club. She produces works that, in her eyes, “celebrate the joy of being free,” and is passionate about telling stories related to issues of racism, classism and sexism.

The second exhibit showcases the women’s wide array of accomplishments, ranging from Undine Smith Moore’s musical work, which was performed at Carnegie Hall and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, to Mildred

Along with recognizing the achievements of the women in the collections, the exhibits also foster awareness of the work that archivists do to make these collections available for research, according to Dixson.

Both exhibits represent the culmination of a twoyear process made possible with funding from a nearly $127,000 National Historical Publications and Records

Commission grant.

The grant allowed Emory’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library to hire a project archivist, Amber L. Moore, to arrange and describe these nine different collections.

She and her team of four graduate students processed more than 270 boxes of materials, including various correspondence, writings, compositions, photographs, audiovisual material and other papers that chronicled the lives and creative endeavors of the women featured

in the exhibit.

“This project has been such a transformative and empowering experience for me,” Moore said in an Oct. 29 Emory news report. “I’ve seen the ups and downs, struggles, triumphs, growth and accomplishments of other women of color through their own eyes. I have the remarkable job and responsibility to make sure that others have the same chance to be inspired.”

Moore and other researchers, such as Francille Rusan Wilson, associate professor of American studies, ethnicity, and history at the University of Southern California Dornsife, hope these exhibits will draw other researchers to visit the archives and learn more about the lives and contributions of these women.

The available archives for black women’s studies remain spare and scattered, and scholars are often forced to develop innovative techniques for finding black women’s stories, according to Wilson.

“These nine collections are a truly welcome addition to the primary source material available,” she said.

In Dixson’s opinion, these exhibits exemplify Emory’s long-standing tradition of diverse exhibits that focus on the lives of a wide array of distinctive individuals or groups.

She said that Emory will continue to create new exhibits that further this ideal, in order to connect people with original materials and stories.

“We aspire to reflect the breadth of our collections and the research that is carried out at Emory,” she said.

“That serves us all well.”

n Monday, University of Missouri President Timothy Wolfe resigned amidst protests accusing the administration of not properly addressing campus racial issues. The events that occurred demonstrate how simmering racial tensions on college campuses can boil over into full-fledged, effective activism. Wolfe’s resignation has both granted activists a symbolic victory and opened up the door for future change under new leadership.

In light of this event and similar incidents at other universities, this is a moment when members and administrators of the Emory community should look inward at our campus’ heightening racial tensions.

Activists around the country have been repeating a common refrain: People must pay attention and consciously analyze the daily racial conflict around them.

These injustices are always happening; we must never shut our eyes to their presence.

Racism today manifests itself in a variety of institutional and interpersonal ways, from macro- to micro-aggressions, from blatant acts of hate and violence to small incidences of exclusion that accrue over time. Students of color face a wide range of insensitivity and oppression from all sides of campus.

Rather than wait for another overt, racially insensitive incident to spur community outcry, the Emory administration should be proactive on the issues of improving race relations and inclusivity on campus. Not only must they become aware of the experiences of underrepresented groups, but they must also work towards creating a campus that is diverse beyond just the numbers.

While the University of Missouri has created an opportunity for change by opening up the presidency, we at Emory are approaching that juncture this year

with the University President James W. Wagner’s upcoming retirement. The Board of Trustees should look at these incidents occurring across the country — including those at our own University — and choose a successor who places race and diversity at the forefront of campus initiatives. We would like to see the Board of Trustees choose a president with an acute perception of the realities of racism in America.

We can’t simply point to buzzwords like “diversity” and “inclusion” to pretend that the problem is solved. Diversity and belonging look very different from each other, and while the current state of race relations on college campuses might meet the standard of the former, it certainly does not meet standards of the latter.

We need to foster a community of inclusion at Emory for all students that moves beyond assimilation and that treats students of color as more than statistics to tout diversity for improving public relations.

While the onus is on administration to use the news from University of Missouri as a lesson, student activists may also have some questions worth thinking about. Power manifests itself in different ways at different universities. University of Missouri activists were able to rally the support of the school’s football players who boycotted playing until the demands of protesters were met. This raises the question: how does student power manifest itself at Emory? As a private institution without a football team, what resources do activists here have to facilitate the changes that they demand?

Regardless, it should not take a racist or insensitive action by a member of our community to make change happen. The whole point of paying attention to the problems in the world is not to have to wait for injustice to hit us in the face but rather to remain constantly cognizant of its rampancy.

No, Clinton, airlines are not leaving consumers out to dry

illary Clinton is firmly on the campaign trail. She recently penned an op-ed to Quartz magazine in her latest attempt to woo voters. Clinton titled the piece: “Being probusiness doesn’t mean hanging consumers out to dry.”

The column cited the airline industry as an example of capitalism run astray, calling out four major airlines for their unresponsiveness in changing airfares with regards to cheaper fuel. Despite the price of jet fuel dropping “more than a dollar per gallon” and oil dipping “to under $50” per barrel, she criticized the airlines for charging “just as much as ever for tickets.” Clinton parlayed this example into evidence for increasing government involvement in business, trumpeting that “sometimes, the system doesn’t work the way that it should, and we need to fix it.”

Predictably, the column won loud applause from consumer groups.

Business Travel Coalition and Travelers United backed Clinton, praising the article for “[shining] a bright light on the problems of the U.S. airline industry concentration and resulting anti-consumer and anticompetitive policies and practices.” Publishing the piece certainly won Clinton some hefty support, which presumably was her main goal.

But while Clinton’s words sound grand and inspiring, the points where she argues about the airlines “gouging” consumers are as unsupported as they are blatantly false.

Clinton’s assertion that the airfares remain stagnant suffers under closer scrutiny. The price of air travel has, in fact, tailed off since last year. Responding to Clinton’s column, Airlines for America, a proindustry lobbying group, presented data revealing declining airfares, which “[have] actually fallen 3.9 percent from the same period last year.” Domestically, airfares also dropped sharply by “seven percent in August year over year.”

Sure, we might expect Airlines for America to come out in defense of the airlines. But nevertheless, it’s awfully hard to argue with the raw, factual data they present.

Furthermore, a broader investigation of airfares over a long period of years highlights an even greater decline. Data from the Department of Transportation (DOT) show a 13.8 percent drop off, adjusted for inflation, in the average fare since 1995. This hardly confirms Clinton’s notion that fares remain “as high as ever.” Comparatively, flying represents a bargain for the consumer, with historically low fares now making flying more affordable to more people. Long gone are the days of air travel reserved exclusively for the upper class, Mrs. Clinton.

Of course, the window of comparison one takes in looking at the data matters. If Clinton roots her assertions in data only since 2008, she’d be correct in drawing an upward trend for airfares. However, it would also be grossly misleading to compare current airfares to those in the pit of one of the worst global recessions.

Clinton also assumes that airfares should exhibit a response to fuel prices, which is an unreasonable expectation. Two factors primarily control the price of a good: supply and demand. As an input good, the price of oil may affect the cost of offering a flight for the airlines but holds no direct bearing over either supply or demand of air travel. The

fact that the costs associated with flying decrease, in no way obligates the airlines to slash fares accordingly, so long as the market will bear the same price.

Pricing airfares in accordance with the cost of input goods would entail that airlines adhere to a cost-plus structure, not one driven by the laws of the free market. In debates with presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, Clinton herself previously defended the need to maintain a free market, considering it a “grave mistake” to desert that system that built “the greatest middle class in history.” She cannot then fairly, just selectively pick and choose where she wants the free market to apply.

Lastly, while our former Secretary of State bemoans what she considers unjustly high airfares, it would appear that consumers actually believe air travel is fairly priced. Domestically, the airlines carried 2.6 percent more passengers in 2014 than during the prior year, an uptake in enplanements that has persisted so far in 2015 as well. Clearly, with more passengers boarding planes, demand for air travel remains robust.

At the end of the day, consumers vote with their wallets. With the price of gasoline lower than ever in recent memory and with an abundance of technology that undercuts the need to fly for business purposes, consumers maintain plenty of options when considering air travel. Yet, the upward trend in passenger enplanements suggest that consumers, on average, continually value the service provided by the airlines at some level equal to or greater than the current prices. Although Clinton claims to represent the opinions of her constituents, their day-to-day actions ultimately indicate a widely shared satisfaction with the price of flying.

Notably, Southwest Airlines especially has pursued market share aggressively, planning to grow at about a rate of seven percent during the year, effectively shattering any notion of cooperation to depress capacity among the airlines. Moreover, in response to industry consolidation, a string of ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs) has invaded the market, injecting some heated price competition in areas suffering from mergers. The growth of these ULCCs and the pricing pressures they impose on legacy airlines — which have openly admitted to facing some competitive heat and being forced to trim fares to retain passengers — exemplify key characteristics of a competitive marketplace, one already acting in the way Clinton believes it should.

Undoubtedly, Clinton probably does have the consumers’ best interests at heart. But good intentions simply do not substitute for making well-supported and truthful claims.

Criticizing the airline industry, one of the most verbally despised and common punching bags of the public, probably wins her some points along the campaign trail. But the claims she makes in no way paint an accurate picture of the industry’s landscape.

So: No, Mrs. Clinton, being pro-business doesn’t mean hanging consumers out to dry. And, speaking for the airline industry, that’s not at all what’s happening.

Does the future freak you out?

ith finals and spring registration among us, college students are again faced with the daunting task of planning for the future.

We map out study schedules, increase our intake of caffeine and stock our OPUS shopping carts full with hope and one or two General Education Requirements.

Students know too well the mental juggling act of figuring out what courses to take next semester while simultaneously trying to finish this semester’s courses.

The tossing and turning of the late night, early-morning, work-before-sleep routine reflects the restlessness of our thoughts: What classes should I take next semester? Does this knock out a requirement somewhere? How will this affect my career path? I’m so not getting into med/law/business school…

I am not saying that planning is bad. Planning is actually good. It keeps you (and your mind) organized and on track. Unfortunately, more often than not, stress and anxiety come with the planning like a side of mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving dinner. It’s so sad to see college students stretch their mental, emotional and physical capacities thinner and thinner with each mention of the word “future.” College students are already under so much pressure — academically, socially and financially — that I could easily write another editorial (or a whole book) solely about the stresses of college.

What I mean to say is that, especially over the course of these next few months, don’t let planning for the future overwhelm you. Planning for the future is exciting, useful and responsible, but there are definite limits to how much you can actually plan. And I feel like many students forget that fact. Nobody really knows the future.

We can’t control everything. We won’t be able to force a certain professor to teach a certain class at a certain time so we can feel comfortable in our charts and schedules.

We can’t demand our dream internship. We can’t foresee family emergencies, personal injuries, sudden passions or an unexpectedly difficult class that might tank our GPAs. And don’t even bother mentioning a “Four Year Plan.” Do you really think you’re going to know where you are in four years? Life changes at every moment. What will you do if something happens that is out of your control and forces you to change your plan? Will you freak out? Will you have a mental breakdown and start a new

series on Netflix with the sad acceptance that your whole life is now thrown off-kilter?

I’ve seen this too many times already. (P.S.: Your whole life is not thrown off-kilter).

I find Four Year Plans academically intimidating.

The idea of determining exactly what courses I’m going to take and when I’m going to take them over my next few years gives me anxiety.

Yes, add/drop/swap can save your ass sometimes, but it’s not that reliable.

Furthermore, a train track runs smoothly until one Illustration By Shalvi Shah | Copy Chief board or screw or rod is not where it is supposed to be, not where it is expected to be. Then, bells, whistles and horns blow, and passengers panic about what is happening to this giant hunk of speeding metal and, more importantly, what is going to happen to their lives. Don’t make your plans like train tracks. Don’t lay a track with certainty and commit yourself to its perfection. If you expect your plan to be perfect and remain unchanged, you may panic when something goes slightly awry.

Don’t attach yourselves to a future that hasn’t happened yet. Be adaptable. Be able to work with what life hands you. You want to make a Four Year Plan? Go right ahead.

I just suggest making a skeleton — don’t flesh out your plan, don’t create a being and commit your mind, body and soul to it. Expect plans to change. Plans change, people change, and that makes life exhilarating and hectic and scary and wise.

Keep in mind that while you should accept the uncertainty, you shouldn’t just watch the world unfold and feel like you have no control whatsoever. You do have control. You can’t expect to get into medical school by not making any plans and dreaming — make it happen.

Be active in the pursuit of what you want, of your goals. If you see yourself working for that law firm in Atlanta, go for it. If you imagine your artwork hanging on the walls of households and museums alike, then create your art.

I’m just suggesting that your plans don’t distract you so much that you forget to implement them. Clinging to a schedule of your future self isn’t going to help your present self, which ultimately won’t help your future self either. Be open to possibilities and opportunities and different plans.

Leave room for a fun class. Leave room for extracurricular activities. Leave room for lunch. Keep making plans. Just leave room for them to change. And guess what?

It’s OK if they do.

The blurring line between anti-Israel and anti-Semitic Zack Ashley | College Freshman

T

his summer, Israeli director Roy Zafrani’s film was rejected from being shown at a film festival in Norway.

The organizers of the festival cited a cultural boycott of Israeli products as the reason for this, despite the fact that the boycott is not supposed to extend itself to individuals. Additionally, the film in no way supported either the Israeli government or its actions; the film was about disabled children at a center in Tel Aviv.

It’s one of a number of events that epitomizes a dangerous form of anti-Semitism that disguises itself in the form of being anti-Israel. A more dangerous example of this phenomenon came last summer when, amidst heightened violence between Israelis and Palestinians, a pro-Palestinian rally in Paris turned ugly toward Jewish shops and synagogues. The rioters broke windows and defaced the establishments while chanting phrases like “kill the Jews.”

These rioters, and the bigots who share similar views, apart from being blatant antiSemites seem to greatly misunderstand two realities. The first is that being Jewish is not necessarily equivalent to being a Zionist (or to being in full support of everything the Israeli government is doing), and it most certainly does not equate to being responsible for anything done by the Israeli government or its defense forces. I, for instance, am Jewish, but I by no means support everything the Israeli government does. To take out any frustrations or anger over Israel’s actions on the world’s Jewish community not only lacks logic, but is also blatant anti-Semitism.

The second thing I think the rioters misunderstand is what being pro-Palestine is. Being pro-Palestine means not just supporting sovereignty and human rights for the Palestinian people but also supporting a lasting peace for them and the region they live in. The last time I checked, boycotting Jewish directors, burning Jewish stores, chanting “gas the Jews” and spreading hateful and generalizing opinions

about an entire religion in no way paves the way for peace.

If anything, real people who are pro-Palestine should be just as angry with the rioters, since they tarnish the reasonable goals of those who actually support rights and peace for the Palestinian people.

Some people could point the blame at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for this new form of anti-Semitism. They could say that his actions are hurting the reputations of Jews worldwide. And while I’m not Netanyahu’s largest supporter, I must still disagree.

The fact of the matter is that whatever Netanyahu’s government decides to do is not representative of the Jewish community. In fact, it has nothing to do with them at all, and to point any blame or to incorporate the community into these decisions is straight wrong.

Individuals, of course, have a right to disagree with the policies of a government or institution. They have the right to spread their opinions, rally around their disagreements and even boycott aspects of that government or institution. What they cannot do, due to those disagreements, is spread hatred and violence toward a group of people based off of their religion. They certainly cannot use those disagreements to further their anti-Semitic agenda.

What’s most dangerous about this new wave of anti-Semitism is that it’s using Israel’s actions to justify hate. It’s not only becoming culturally acceptable to have these views, it’s becoming culturally fashionable to have these views in that many people are expected to be critical of Israel (that often perpetuates itself in anti-Semitic forms).

Unfortunately, this culture that the international community seems to be creating is becoming increasingly dangerous and hostile for Jews around the world to live in. This culture is creating an environment in which a Jewish director’s film, based on anti-Semitic sentiment, can be denied from a film festival in the disguise of being anti-Israel.

F

rom the outside, the Media, Literature and Arts Outreach (MLAO) house at Emory is indistinguishable from the fraternity houses that surround it —large and regal, only missing Greek letters.

Apart from the pool table in one of the rooms, venturing inside the house, the space feels very much like an art gallery.

Visitors immediately see the plentiful display of vibrant student artwork, some of which was created by house’s own residents.

“Anyone can reserve a room at any time if they just want it for personal reasons to do some painting or anything like that,” said Juliana Bonovich, College junior, resident advisor and co-lead of

the MLAO house.

Even though not every room has an art display, all non-residential rooms in the house are utilized for art-related means.

Starting the house was no easy task; Emory released the application for themed housing on Eagle Row just a week before the end of the Spring 2015 semester.

College senior Nick Bowman, one of the co-leads of the house, came up with the idea of a media house and proposed it to the Media Council at Emory, a consortium of several student-run publication groups.

Bonovich, co-president of The Pulse, an anthology of the arts, was interested in the idea of starting a themed house that would include literature and the visual arts.

Using some of her prior experience

with Emory Residence Life (she was a sophomore advisor in Longstreet-Means Hall the prior year), Bonovich sent in an application for the potential theme.

As part of the application, Bonovich needed to send in a preliminary roster of people interested in living in the house, a task that required a great deal of publicizing. It was an especially challenging feat when people already had housing plans for the following school year.

Even amidst final exams, she was able to get 60 people on the roster for the 40 open spots to live in the house. Because Bonovich submitted the application for the themed housing, she was responsible for reading the applications from students who wanted to live in the house as well as for placing people in rooms.

The MLAO house, which was previously occupied by a fraternity, is not a Greek-life house and is therefore governed under the same rules as Emory residence halls. Since art encompases so many aspects of the house, MLAO brings the art community together with its multimodal space.

The house is diverse in its residents, who encompass a wide variety of disciplines. The residents include visual artists, creative writing majors and members of several media clubs. However, not everyone was strongly involved in

the arts at Emory prior to living in the house.

College sophomore Matt Huang, for example, was not part of any art clubs at Emory prior to joining the MLAO house. However, he did film in high school and, upon joining MLAO, was motivated to engage in that interest by joining The Emory Spoke’s film sketch team.

In addition to MLAO serving as a catalyst for unifying the different arts organizations on campus, there are a handful of events at the house in which many of its residents and students in the Emory community showcase their work.

There were a number of MLAO events this past month. In October, MLAO hosted a visual arts exhibition called the Peacock Gallery and put on the first Student Arts Fair on McDonough Field in order to give students a chance to showcase and sell their work. Strategically planned during Family Weekend, the students registered to sell their work were allowed to keep 100 percent of their profits.

The residents of the MLAO house hosted several events in honor of Halloween, such as caramel apple decorating and pumpkin carving. In addition, organizations such as The Pulse utilize the space for their general body meetings and student readings.

The house also hosts Open Mics every other week, which typically have a modest turnout. According to Bonovich, the first Open Mic had nearly 40 people.

“I think that, for a pilot program, we’ve been pretty successful,” she said.

What were your expectations before you started TableTalk?

Ami Fields-Meyer: As freshmen and early into our sophomore year, [Adam and I] noticed that we were spending most of our time with people who looked like us, talked like us, had similar socioeconomic and religious backgrounds to ours. We talked to other student leaders and the feeling was nearly universal. So we set out to push Emory toward a culture of conversation and that’s been our guidepost ever since.

Q A

Have the results of TableTalk exceeded your expectations?

AFM: Yes. People resonate with TableTalk because it’s so simple. But what started as a small project has grown into a 50-person organization working actively — and in several spheres — to change Emory’s culture. With TableTalk, we still facilitate conversations between groups over a shared meal. On CampusCouches, students, faculty, administrators, kids, parents and Emory hospital staff have taken a seat to chat.

And we’ve been working hard to bring the community new initiatives — involving dining, academic discussion and even music — for community engagement.

We’ve grown into a highly effective task force for community engagement.

Q A

Have all of the TableTalk campaigns been equally successful?

AFM: Each campaign aims toward a different goal, so we measure each with its own barometer. CampusCouches has certainly been the most visible campaign, and the one that has attracted the most interest from students at other universities. It’s also the most accessible, because anyone can join a conversation on a couch.

We actually met a couple who started dating after meeting on a CampusCouch. But TableTalk — which require a bit more effort, planning, direction and money — has sparked relationships across cultures, interests, political affiliations and social groups.

Q A

What do you think could be improved about TableTalk?

AFM: We’d like TableTalk to happen on a weekly basis, like CampusCouches does.

But that’s going to require organizations to actively seek them out. We don’t dictate who talks to one another — we only ask, and when we see two organizations that have matched, we connect them and facilitate a conversation. It’s like Tinder, but for student groups.

Another dream of ours is to see a set of TableTalk between Emory administrators, faculty and Bon Appetit’s service workers. But, again, those groups need to come to the table them-

pon arriving at Emory, students leave the bubble of their hometowns and are exposed to different cultures. However, sometimes this change can be overwhelming, causing some to gravitate toward and find comfort with people whose backgrounds are more similar to their own.

In 2013, College senior Ami Fields-Meyer and Goizueta Business School senior Adam Goldstein, the founders of TableTalk, set out to fix that problem. The organization aims to facilitate conversations between people of different backgrounds by setting up couches across campus through their CampusCouches program, planning TableTalk between different student organizations and setting up stickers with conversation starters at tables in the Dobbs University Center (DUC).

Two years after its founding, the Wheel caught up with Fields-Meyer and Goldstein to see how TableTalk has evolved and what its impact has been on campus.

Q A

How has TableTalk evolved at Emory and beyond since last year?

Adam Goldstein: We came up in a conversation on Ami’s couch. We started just the two of us, wrote a proposal and presented it to 20 student leaders. And we ran our first TableTalk in Spring 2013 with the Buddhist Club and the Muslim Student Association. Now, TableTalk is about a 50-person team, with three divisions: TableTalk, CampusCouches and TableTalk[x], which is our creative incubator for new community engagement ideas.

We’ve now just gone through our second recruitment process and have three strong teams working actively on new issues.

The other important evolution is TableTalk’s presence at other colleges: TableTalk chapters now exist on four other college campuses, including the University of Pennsylvania, Indiana Univeristy, Brandeis and Haverford.

Some are more active than others; the University of Pennsylvania’s chapter, for example, runs events ev-

ery other week and has already engaged many facets of its community. We’re very excited to have seen the idea catch on.

We’re beginning to help set up chapters at three other colleges, so stay tuned.

Q A

To what extent has TableTalk brought the Emory community together?

AFM: That’s a question for the Emory community, but I think it’s important to note that we’re not trying to change the world with TableTalk. We’re trying to start conversations.

We’re trying to make sure that more people who don’t look like each other, talk like each other, eat like each other, [get to] know each other’s names. If communities keep making the deliberate effort to meet one another, we’ll get there. But we need buy-in.

Do you have any data on how many students have participated in TableTalk?

AG: We have done 14 TableTalks, with over 160 students in total. We have done 11 CampusCouches and dozens of students, faculty and staff have sat on the couches.

Do you have any plans for TableTalk in the future?

AG: Ami and I have started to consider what it might be like to do this for a year after graduation. We met with the two guys, also best friends at Emory, who started Cam-

T

here is a high chance you might have heard the ubiquitous 2012 Macklemore hit “Thrift Shop” that now boasts 785 million views on YouTube and that held the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 2013 for six consecutive weeks. If you look closely at the video credits, you will spot Jay Neilson as one of the members of its small production team. Neilson, a College junior majoring in media studies, is one lucky individual who had the chance to apply his creative savvy to work alongside one of the biggest names in the music industry.

Describing himself as gregarious, compassionate and goofy, Neilson first connected with Macklemore in 2012 by means of his good friend, a talented photographer that was working with the team. Neilson’s friend was invited to work on Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” video and was encouraged to bring a buddy as help, and that is how Neilson entered the picture. The crew was composed of only five people. The crew was a familycentered business, a small, independent enterprise where each person had his or her own role in production, merchandise, marketing and outreach.

As a first-time unpaid intern, Neilson’s role was to help everyone with their different projects on the filming grounds.

He worked as an assistant to the main producer, compiling files and locations, renting vehicles for the video and preparing other video production-related materials.

tion team are so fluid, it’s difficult to explain my exact role,” Neilson said. “I also worked with merchandise and outreach and everyone worked together.

Awesome environment. It was the best experience I’ve ever had. It was a party everyday, although there were a lot of responsibilities.”

Following this memorable summer experience, Neilson continued to help the production team with small projects that he could attend to from afar. Years passed and, last summer, he decided to get a more hands-on experience yet again and emailed the team to ask whether they might offer him a spot in the production crew for a new project. He was accepted and joined the crew once more.

Although it was hard work, with 15-20 hour-long shifts, his utmost dedication made it an engaging and growing experience that armed him with novel, useful skills. He soon received a promotion and was officially employed and that was when he became closer to Ben Haggerty, otherwise known as Macklemore.

“Everyone was expected to give the their best,” Neilson said.“Ben is a great friend, everyone lit up as he entered the room. He respected everyone and he motivated me to work harder,” Neilson said.

Neilson did everything from responding to fan mail and organizing merchandise to setting up printers and helping to organize concerts in Las Vegas and San Francisco.

“Ben came in one day and asked us what we thought about

Ed Sheeran,” Neilson said. “He asked me personally what I thought about Ed. I then had a conversation about him and how Ed Sheeran might affect his career.”

Soon enough, the two artists collaborated for the song “Growing Up.” “I would sit for a long time with Ben outside, just talking about life and what he wanted to do musically,” Neilson said. “He is an amazing guy. I love him as a human being. He is spiritual, compassionate and very energetic and creative.”

Neilson recalls many memorable times with him.

“It was my last day in Seattle before I left for a trip to Southeast Asia and he texted me to help him move these custom Jordan shoes made in association with Nike [Macklemore’s own model] into his house,” Neilson said. “After I helped him out, he sent me a heartfelt text, a very kind message. He told me how much he appreciated me. Soon after he promoted me. He also asked me about my favorite type of Jordans, and the second day he came in and gave me two pairs of shoes from his own shoe collection just so I can have my own personalized ones.”

Neilson declares that he is motivated by success and by being surrounded with driven, intelligent and creative people that can only serve as an impetus to propel his own artistic path.

“I love to see how other people interact with the world and the things that they love and believe in,” Neilson said. “I’m passionate about people and their creativity.”

In the future he hopes to find his own path in the music industry and beyond.

“I don’t know whether I’ll do

[media/music] production or management, but right now I’m into marketing,” Neilson said. “I want to reach a balance between pushing to create great art and working with cool individuals and making money off of it.”

Neilson declares himself open to opportunities and is looking forward to discovering what is in store for him in rapport to his collaboration with Macklemore and beyond.

“In the end, I’m the protagonist of my own story,” Neilson said.

Let me introduce you to this interesting concept I read on the internet. It’s called “dialogue.” Dialogue comes from the French word dialoge, which means “don’t be an asshole — listen to the other side.”

In today’s society of increasing polarization, everything from “What do you think about gay marriage?” to “What should we have for dinner?” devolves into a shouting match of ad-hominem attacks and Twitter rampages.

My advice is simple: learn more about other people’s perspectives. Do your own research. Give others’ views the respect and courtesy they deserve. And, most importantly, don’t be an asshole.

The real world is not all sunshine and rainbows, so my hope is that you bring sunscreen and an umbrella.

notes for the silenced { Malek jandali’s songs for peace

The Syrian-American pianist and composer delves into his music, homeland and messages for humanity.

eventy-two hours afer Malek Jandali performed “Watani Ana” in Washington, D.C., his mother and father, oceans and seas away in Syria, were handcufed and beaten.

Tis was a moment of realization for Jandali, the Syrian-American pianist and composer, a moment in which he became fully aware of the power of music.

“Te question is, ‘How can I hurt anybody playing the piano?,’ ” Jandali said in a phone interview with the Wheel. “Only then, only then, [did I realize] that music is so powerful — for a dictator to make an executive decision to beat my parents.”

Rewinding to 10 years before that brutal attack on his parents, however, Jandali had a much diferent, yet just as signifcant, insight into the power of knowledge of music.

“I started as a classically trained pianist — I played Rachmaninof, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach,” Jandali said. “But what I lacked under the dictatorship in Syria is comprehending what I was actually performing. I did not comprehend … until I came [to the United States] and I studied and analyzed scores and had the tools to actually unlock all these treasures.”

For Jandali, who was born in Germany and raised in the Syrian city of Homs, the comprehension of music

11.11.15 marked his transition from simply reading the notes of others, aimlessly pushing keys as a performer, to writing his own notes, creating his own musical universe as a composer.

Tis transition, he says, was possible because of the freedom he experienced afer having come to the United States. Tis freedom, which was non-existent when Jandali was growing up in Homs, remains buried under the destruction and bloodied by the violence of the war-torn Syria even today.

Te confict began in the city of Daraa in March 2011, when Syrian children and teenagers were arrested for creating grafti that spoke out against the nation’s dictatorship. Demonstrations and protests broke out, marking the frst dozens of casualties. Te civil war is now in its fourth year, and, to date, the death toll has exceeded 200,000.

“Music is not just entertainment, it’s beyond that,” Jandali said. “As a reaction, being SyrianAmerican, witnessing these atrocities, it was my duty to refect and react and compose something called ‘Watani Ana,’ which means, ‘I am my homeland, and my homeland is me. My love for you is fre in my heart. When am I gonna see you free?’ ” Jandali, who currently splits his time between Atlanta and New York, does not limit the meanings and messages or the context and content of his compositions solely to Syria. In a way, the specifc passion that permeates each and every one of his notes is a passion that takes on a universality, where listeners are able to individually invite Jandali’s music into their minds, and, in doing so, gracefully invoke personal perceptions and ignite infnite imaginations.

Jandali says that one of the oldest methods of musical notation in the world was invented by his ancestors in Ugarit, an ancient port city whose ruins are now found in Ras Shamra, a headland on the Mediterranean Coast of northern Syria.

Te invention of the Ugaritic alphabet around 1400 B.C., he says, provided an early means of expression.

“My album, Echoes From Ugarit, [is] based on the oldest musical notation in the world, which nobody told me in Syria when I was educated there,” Jandali said. “Tat shows you that that regime is anti-music, anti-truth, anti-beauty.”

In order to premiere that work, Jandali was forced to get approval from the Syrian dictatorship.

“Imagine if you want to have a concert here at the Schwartz Center and you need to go and ask Mayor Kasim [Reed] or the President to have permission,” Jandali said. “It’s just so ridiculous.”

Jandali, speaking of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, cites that what he is doing is truly nothing novel, nothing new. Troughout history, dictators have feared, censored and used art for purposes of propaganda and political agendas.

15 “Today, as I’m speaking to you, the Syrian [National] Symphony Orchestra, supported by the dictator and the Ministry of Culture, they do concerts in the name of the children,” Jandali said.

“Te same government or dictator will commit a massacre, killing the children in the refugee camps. It’s just the epic of hypocrisy.”

Te composer fnds humanity’s dehumanization of war troubling, and believes the Syrian dictatorship, by targeting children, is targeting the future of Syria as a whole. What therefore remains of utmost importance to Jandali is spreading a message of peace, and, in particular, being a voice for the Syrian children, whom he feels are the closest representations of angels on Earth in all their purity and innocence.

Music is not just entertainment, it’s beyond that.

-Malek Jandali “My main goal now is to preserve these maqams, the voices of the people, the chants, my cultural identity, the collective memory of the people, through music,” Jandali said. “Buildings, churches, everything is being destroyed, but hopefully we

can have some music to spare and to contemplate.”

Jandali has also developed Pianos for Peace, a project that aims to place pianos in public spaces around Atlanta. Te pianos will be decorated by artists, and played by artists. Te end goal is to raise funds for humanitarian projects and maybe even scholarships for students, all while attempting to spread peace through music.

To Jandali, art as a communicator of identity and thought is everlastingly powerful. He notes how we represent our nations with fags, which can be viewed as artistic paintings. But perhaps even more telling is how we honor where we come from by singing national anthems. Music, Jandali feels, is unlike any other form of artistic expression.

“If you compare music to visual art, flm, painting or poetry, you can always see the painting, touch the statue, see the flm,” Jandali said. “You can’t see music. And you can’t touch it.

It’s painting on silence.”

Music, then, is essentially a painted silence capable of igniting the loudest cries against the injustices and inhumanities that confront us. It is a form of self-expression in its most delicate and vivid state, able to set in motion endless emotions and, at times, even provoke reactions and retaliations.

To Jandali, in particular, music is an outlet to pursue missions of greater meaning and one of self-expression.

SoHo, Jandali’s upcoming album, will be featured next year on Feb. 6 at Carnegie Hall. And what will become even more solidifed is that Jandali, as he paints on silence, is a creator of compositions that will forever hang upon the hearts of humankind.

“At the end of the day, I will say that my music is dedicated to you — the listener,” Jandali said.

“May you fnd harmony, hope, love and peace.”

The Meantime A unique homage to radio Kelsey Klosterman | Staff Writer

I

f you’ve ever wanted to watch a show featuring horrifc murders, fast-paced comedy, real-time sound efects and a few hip-hop dances thrown in the mix, then I have a suggestion for you.

Teater Emory’s newest production, Te Meantime: A Time-Traveling Radio Spectacle opened Tursday, Nov. 5, and it’s a bit of an adventure. Te show, according to writer and director Brent Glenn, is meant to be “an homage to radio and the art of listening.”

When you walk into the Mary Gray Munroe Teater, you’re ofered some treats from the cofee bar. I helped myself to a cup of (free!) hot chocolate and then surveyed the room for a seat. Te room was completely transformed for the show; there are only so many “normal” theater seats, and instead, most of the foor space was flled with couches, armchairs and tables.

I sat at one of the smaller tables and someone with a beard and black suit approached me almost immediately. She made some conversation, attempting to use 2015 lingo and failing, which makes sense because according to her, she’s from a diferent time.

Another character recited a poem for us. A third asked us if we’d like to text into the show.

Te Meantime is a somewhat audience-interactive show, and theatre-goers can send in text messages that are then written on a board onstage. At one point, you’re even asked to break typical theater protocol and turn your phone on and keep the sound up so that you can receive texts back from the show. It adds some ambience to the show, but not everyone who initially texted in received the texts during the

show (the person I went with, for example), and a few sufered from bad reception, leading to some late text tones coming from the audience.

Te production is headed by four time-travelling radio-lovers and their band of “Chronic Argonauts:” six thick-bearded, black-garbed characters with massively difering personalities. Tese 10 act out a series of radio skits, each taking on a diferent persona for every sketch.

Because Te Meantime is a tribute to radio, some of the material is actually “stolen from the best,” according to Glenn. Tere are some older radio skits included in the show that audience members might recognize, such as Who’s on First?, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello’s signature segment about a baseball team with players who have some confusing names.

Te show is primarily composed of these kinds of sketches, and the type of skits vary dramatically.

Some old radio favorites are also included, such as the horror-flled Murder Castle by Arch Oboler and Te Ting on the Fourble Board by Wyllis Cooper, as well as the more dramatic and silly Flash Gordon by Alex Raymond.

My favorite skit was Murder Castle, which told the story of a man who sends out summons to young women to serve as his personal secretaries or caretakers. Te twist? Well, you can get that from the title — he’s actually calling them up to his castle to kill them. Te sketch takes a close look at the story of one particular girl who’s called up for secretarial work and the sister who comes looking for her a month later. Tis sketch is put on by three of the four main characters, and each one truly embraces their roles. You even get to hear a couple of people die — very realistically, I might add.

One of the more interesting features for me was the pair of Foley artists in one corner of the stage who produced the sound efects for the show. In the show, the two green-skinned creatures come from the distant future where people have no need for sight and rely only on sound. As such, they’re perfect for creating sound efects,

and they have an entire arsenal of objects that they use to create sounds like footsteps, water dripping from cave walls and tinkling bells.

Sometimes I found myself watching them instead of the other characters just so I could see the diferent objects that they used to make certain sounds. Tey realize the atmosphere of the show, making the skits come to life as the other actors give their lines.

Te Meantime even functions as a musical of sorts, with characters singing several songs in the show. Calliope “Pill” Dickles, portrayed by Christina Leidel, is a one-person band, and I lost track of the number of instruments she played: keyboard, saxophone, banjo and the list goes on.

Not to mention that there are more than a couple of points where the Chronic Argonauts start to dance, and the Foley Artists may or may not start rapping in the middle of everything.

“It really does feel like fun adventure,” College senior Julian Freeman said. “Te play featured plenty of classical radio-show elements which were spotted with classical references. Te comedy was a GradeA example of combining slapstick humor with some present-day humor added, and it had something for people of any age to be able to laugh at.”

Because time is so thematic, Te Meantime has a few quirks about what constitutes the beginning of the show, the end, and various parts of the middle, and the whole thing is out of order. Since the show is made up almost entirely of skits, they don’t necessarily have to be in order, but as a result, there are moments where the show is hard to follow and a bit cluttered — there were parts of the show that lulled, and a few references seemed to go over the audience’s head. Te moments of prolonged silence from the company seemed to indicate that they were waiting for laughter that didn’t come.

Regardless, the set was beautifully constructed, and the interactive elements made for a fun show.

It was certainly interesting. And if that’s what you’re looking for in a theater experience, I’d recommend Te Meantime.

T

he promise of Skyfall was simple: Afer three flms of rebooting and recontextualizing James Bond, the pieces were fnally in place for a more traditional James Bond story.

It was a promise that the Daniel CraigBond era would stop resting on the laurels and the appeal of Casino Royale, a flm that made a seismic impact by deconstructing the character at his beginning and turning him into a brutal and more tortured soul. But what the flmmakers seem to have forgotten was that the arc being set up, the goal of the Daniel Craig era, was to deconstruct that character so he could ultimately be reconstructed.

So, it’s a great disappointment that Spectre drags it heels by taking another flm to set up James Bond and attempting to further draw a continuous story for this version of the character, rather than letting itself indulge in the antics that it has ultimately earned through three other flms.

Yet, somehow, that great disappointment isn’t the worst part of Spectre.

Following on the events of Skyfall, James Bond (Daniel Craig) is in hot pursuit of a criminal organization hinted to him by the late M (Judi Dench in a brief cameo). Tis path leads Bond to the trail of worldwide terrorist network Spectre, led by the mysterious Franz Oberhauser (Christoph Waltz). While this is going on around the world, MI6 is threatened in London by very diferent forces. Te

new head of the Joint Intelligence Service, C (Andrew Scott), questions the need for the 00 Agent Program and seeks to shut it down in favor of drones and intelligence gathering. Naturally, the current M (Ralph Fiennes), along with the team of Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw), look to do everything they can to stop C from his plans for almost total worldwide surveillance.

If there’s something you can tell from this plot summary, it’s that there’s a lot going on. Spectre has two parallel plots, each of which could sustain a whole flm.

Each plot has its own themes and ideas, and only crosses over in the most tangential of ways. Terefore, to resolve and deal with all the plot threads, Spectre is incredibly overstufed.

What doesn’t help with this is how Spectre feels utterly incoherent in its movement. Te flm staggers and lurches like the Frankenstein that it is, with some moments working and some not.

Tere are some rather cool moments in the flm. Te opening scene, a track through a Day of the Dead parade in Mexico, is incredibly stylish and cool-asall-hell (even if totally pointless) tracking shot that serves to kick of the flm with a degree of thin-substance freworks that serve as its MO for the rest of the runtime.

And a train-based fst fght between Bond and Mr. Hinx (Dave Bautista) is brutal, well choreographed and the kind of excitement that you wish the whole

flm had.

Some scenes work and some don’t and the ones that don’t drag this flm down. Tey’re boring, largely expository and murder the pacing of the flm.

In a script full of illogical characters, poorly constructed scenes and dialogue that couldn’t have possibly passed a test in which any of it was said out loud, the pacing is perhaps the worst part.

I’ve spent a lot of time on story and script because it’s by and away the flm’s biggest problem. It’s going to override and color every perception of this flm, and explains the middling to negative reviews. Because the rest of the elements are fairly strong.

Te cast is solid. Daniel Craig’s Bond remains an all-time great. He has a certain degree of casual confdence that has

It would be a perfect cast if it wasn’t for Lea Seydoux’s Madeleine Swann, a Bond girl with a wet paper bag-esque chemistry with Daniel Craig and a line delivery that is so impossibly let down by the editing. Or Christoph Waltz’s Oberhauser, who’s given absolutely no time to make an impression and whose usually menacingly soothing delivery serves here to make him feel more like a middle manager than a villain.

Spectre looks phenomenal. Tanks to the fair of cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, there’s enough stylish eye candy for a couple flms. While not as hypnotic or seductive as Roger Deakins’ work on Skyfall, there’s some really strong imagery going on here, even if the action tends to be a little unevenly flmed from time to time.

Spectre ranks safely in the

bottom half of the Bond films. grown in this flm and remaining as effortlessly charming as ever. His supporting MI6 team, though woefully underused, all play of Bond perfectly. Andrew Scott brings a certain nerdy bureaucratic menace to C. And Monica Bellucci, as Lucia, does the most she possibly could with less than three minutes of character.

But visual fair and strong acting just isn’t enough.

An incredibly weak script and story and major league pacing problems mean that Spectre ranks safely in the bottom half of the Bond flms.

But never worry, James Bond will return. Hopefully no worse for this wear.

he Emory women’s volleyball team reached the championship match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Rochester, N.Y., falling to Washington University (Mo.) three sets to two last Saturday The Eagles began the tournament against Brandeis University (Mass.) and came away victorious after three sets, winning 25-14, 25-9 and 25-14.

Senior setter Sydney Miles led the team in assists with 32, while freshman defensive specialist Becky Breuer put up a team-high 14 digs.

“The two freshman who saw game time, Becky and [outside hitter] Karissa [Dzurik], played like experienced players,” Head Coach Jenny McDowell said. “We’re excited about what they did.”

Junior setter Sarah Maher and junior outside hitter Kathryn Trinka the team in kills with nine apiece, managing attacking percentages of .421 and .400, respectively. Meanwhile, junior middle hitter Shannon Nugent led the team in attacking percentage with .636 on her way to 7 kills.

“Sarah is playing exceptionally well.

She has done a really good job,” McDowell said. “Kathryn continues to put up big time, steady numbers and the two of them have been solid for us all season.”

The team took the momentum gathered against Brandeis and turned it into a 3-0 victory over No. 22 ranked Chicago in the semifinals. The straight set win (25-14, 25-16, 25-17), was the team’s 20th consecutive victory. While Trinka set the pace with 10 kills, Maher, Nugent, Dzurik and junior middle hitter Jessica Holler each hit eight.

Junior outside hitter Sheridan Rice led the team in digs with 12. With the

win, Emory earned a spot in the finals of the conference championship, the 12th straight year the Eagles have played for a UAA title.

The Eagles then faced off against the No. 3 Washington University in the UAA conference championship, with automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III tournament on the line. After winning the first two sets 25-21, 25-17, Emory lost the final three sets of the match to fall to Washington. Trinka, Maher, and Dzurik tallied a team high of 13 kills; Miles provided 47 assists, and Breuer led the team with 29 digs. The game was Breuer’s seventh with at least 20 digs this season.

“We played great throughout the weekend,” McDowell said. “I’m super proud of our team. It has been an unbelievable season to date. We let it slip away a little bit, and our opponent stepped it up. We played a great two and a half games at the tournament, but came up a little short closing it out. Now all of our focus on is on the NCAAs.” McDowell reiterated that she has a lot of confidence in her team as they head to Berry College (Ga.) for the regional NCAA tournament, and outlined how she hopes to see them prepare for the final stretch of the season.

“The team has trained hard,” McDowell said. “We’re in great shape, really fit, and I’m happy about that.

We have great leadership and [are] peaking at the right time; we’re saving our best for nationals. To be ready for regionals, we just need to fine-tune some stuff.”

Men’s and Women’s Soccer

B

oth the men’s and women’s soccer teams closed out their regular seasons with wins over their respective men’s and women’s University Athletic Association (UAA) soccer team rival, the University of Rochester (N.Y.). The men’s team defeated the Yellow Jackets 3-0, while the women earned a 3-1 victory.

The women’s team ended their season with a record of 8-6-4 (1-3-3 in UAA play), while the men finished 9-6-2 (3-3-1 in UAA play).

It didn’t take long for the men’s team to strike in their game. Senior defender Matt Sherr headed in a ball from senior midfielder Connor Curtin’s corner kick in the 10th minute to give the Eagles a lead they would not surrender. It was Sherr’s fourth goal of the season.

The Eagles padded their lead in the 30th minute with sophomore forward Austin Mirabella’s first goal of the season. After a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Adam Ferguson, Mirabella found the ball in the ensuing scrum and knocked it past the Rochester keeper.

Though Rochester held the majority of the game’s opportunities — they put up 16 shots to Emory’s seven— the Yellow Jackets were rarely on target. They posted just four shots on goal, all of which Eagles senior goalkeeper Abe Hannigan handled easily.

The cherry on top was another goal from Mirabella in the 56th minute, after the sophomore knocked in a deflection off of senior midfielder Nick Schook’s shot. The Eagles finished with five shots on goal, led by Mirabella’s pair of attempts.

While the men’s team scored fast,

the women’s team got on the scoreboard even faster. After Emory earned a corner kick in the ninth minute of play, Jordan Morell curled the corner into the goal without assistance from her teammates. It was her third goal of the season.

Freshman midfielder Grace Jarrett added the Eagles’ second goal of the match shortly after coming off the bench in the 30th minute, poking in a cross from sophomore forward Kaitlyn Dorka to give Emory a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The Eagles put the game away with a score from freshman forward Sophia Dillon in the 68th minute. Dillon collected a pass from junior forward Cristina Ramirez and dribbled her way around the keeper for an easy goal.

Rochester added a goal in the 71st minute, but it did little to change the run of play. The Eagles cruised to a 3-1 victory, their first and only UAA win of the season.

Sophomore midfielder Christian Meyer and senior forward, Sebastian Hardington were the top scorers on the men’s team this season, with five goals apiece. Schook led the team with three assists.

Ramirez led the women’s team in both goals and assists, tallying five in each category.

The Eagles also celebrated senior night to remember the careers of seniors on both teams. The senior members of the men’s team are Derekd Chan, Nick Schook, Sebastian Hardington, Matt Sherr, Connor Curtin, Leo Ragazzo, Zachary Rosenberg and Abe Hannigan. The seniors on the women’s team are Kristin Temple, Liz Arnold, Jordan Morell and Ally Peterson.

SPORTS College Football Recap: Week 10 Clemson finally beats Florida State, Michigan State falls and the list of unbeatens gets thinner.

I

n an absolutely fantastic week of college football, we saw everything from upsets to stunning comeback wins. We had games between powerhouses in the SEC, Big 12 and ACC this week leading to some of the best games this year. We also saw juggernauts like Michigan State University get knocked out of playoff contention.

No. 2 Louisiana State University 16 at No. 4 University of Alabama 30 With both teams hoping for playoff contention, neither team could afford a loss. This game was destined to be about the run game and defense, and Alabama prevailed. Running back Derrick Henry ran for 210 yards and scored three touchdowns in the win, absolutely torching LSU’s defense along the way.

On the other hand, LSU running back Leonard Fournette, one of the leading Heisman candidates, managed only 39 yards on 19 carries. Alabama now looks like the favorite to win the SEC Championship and hold a playoff berth. For a team that lost early to Ole Miss, it looks like they’ve got everything going for them now.

No. 8 Texas Christian University 29 at No. 14 Oklahoma State University 49 Many predicted that TCU was going to lose sooner or later because of their recent lackluster play, especially with a mediocre defense; but nobody thought it would be in this fashion. TCU’s Heisman candidate quarterback Trevone Boykin passed for an incredible 445 yards and ran for 70 more, but he also threw four interceptions. TCU gained 664 yards on offense, 200 more than Oklahoma

State, but was stopped several times in the red zone. After dominating the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs, Oklahoma State looks like a real contender for the Big 12 championship.

No. 16 Florida State University 13 at No. 1 Clemson University (S.C.) 23 This was possibly Clemson’s last tough game before their inevitable playoff berth.

While they could still lose, it would require a particularly bad game from a team that has looked nothing-but-great all year.

The Clemson Orange were down 10-6 going into halftime, but were able to rally off 17 straight points to give them a 23-13 win.

The best aspect of Clemson’s game was definitely their defense. After allowing a 75-yard touchdown on the second play of the game, the Orange only conceded two field goals for the rest of the game. It’s hard to lose when you don’t give up any points. See you in the playoffs, Clemson.

Other News In other news, the University of Nebraska barely beat No. 7 Michigan State 39-38, in one of the better Big Ten matches of the year.

The University of Arkansas upset No. 18 Ole Miss during overtime in a shootout. Arkansas won 53-52 on an insane (and controversial) play. Navy destroyed the overrated No. 13 University of Memphis Tigers 45-20, ending their 15-game winning streak. Lastly, No. 19 Texas A&M University took a brutal loss to awful Auburn University (Ala.) team 2610. Auburn has performed very poorly this year, so it was quite an embarrassing loss for A&M.

Women Fall to Kennesaw State in Exhibition Rupsha Basu Executive Editor

he Emory women’s basketball team fell to Division I Kennesaw State University (KSU) 63-46 in an exhibition game this past Sunday.

KSU nearly doubled Emory’s shooting percentage, clocking in 48.1 percent compared to 28.8.

While the Eagles were solid defensively, besting KSU in steals (9-5) and turnovers (21-9) — they could not build their defense into offense.

The contest marked the early stages of a new game format: four 10-minute quarters. The KSU Owls maintained a lead throughout the game, only letting the Eagles get within nine points during the third quarter.

The Eagles had several star scorers during the second half, with sophomore forward Dumebi Egbuna posting a team high of 10 points.

Junior guard Shellie Kaniut and freshman guard Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod added eight and six points, respectively.

Despite a noteworthy team effort, with senior guard Khadijah Sayyid, sophomore guard Caroline Spurr and freshman center Paris Wagner contributing offensively, the last 10 minutes of play went back-and-forth, with KSU coming out on top.

With just five minutes on the clock, the Eagles were down by 12.

The game seemed salvageable until the Owls made a 6-1 run, giving them a 17-point lead with a minute left.

The Eagles will return to the court for their first game of the regular season on Nov. 17 against Atlanta’s own Oglethorpe University.

Swim meet canceled due to bus troubles

he Emory men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were unable to compete this past Saturday in Savannah (Ga.) against the Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.) and Brenau University (Ga.). The team’s bus broke down on the way to the meet and the team could not organize arrangements for another bus in time to make it to Savannah. With the Eagles stranded in Dublin (Ga.), they were forced to forfeit the meet. Both the women’s and men’s teams will compete in a dual meet at the University of Georgia (Ga.) on Saturday, Nov. 14th. Additionally, qualified swimmers will also compete in the Arena Pro Series from Nov. 13-15 in Minneapolis (Minn.).

There’s a certain time of day where you can sit by one of the soccer fields and watch the sun tease its way through the city’s skyscrapers, a view that can’t be replicated. If you want to explore after taking in the greenery and the sun, the park backs right into Midtown at 14th Street, just blocks from the Woodruff Arts Center, a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene and other landmarks.

BEST BAR: MAGGIE’S A place to see and be seen above anything else, Maggie’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill is the standard Thursday-Saturday night hangout spot for Emory students, much like moths to a cheap alcohol f lame. Notable for its outdoor porch, amicable bouncers (hi, Rick!) and pool tables, Maggie’s is seemingly the only bar that exists on an Emory student’s radar. Except for the occasional random locals, Mags is the best place to basically reenact an Eagle Row party with less EDM and cheaper pitchers.

BEST LATE NIGHT FOOD: WAFFLE HOUSE

BEST BRUNCH: FOLK ART Two words for you: French toast. If you need more than two words to convince you, Folk Art’s got some of the best food around with a cozy vibe. Folk Art seems like a hipster enclave where cool, young, millennial Atlantans seek refuge from the hustle and bustle of the week over a nice, homey meal. The décor is small-town-dinermeets-grandma’s-kitchen-meets-”American Pickers” episode, and their branch in Inman Park is never really slammed with a crowd.

No college experience is complete without at least one late-night trip to Waffle House. There’s something to be said about a chocolate chip waffle with artery-clogging hashbrowns prepared at 3:30 a.m. that is so desirable it can’t be explained. Its cheapness is only surpassed by its deliciousness. Although there isn’t one as close to campus as, say, Dooley’s Depot or Steak’n’Shake, any Uber ride is worth it. Besides, variety is the spice of life and WaHo is extra spicy.

BEST EMORY-AFFILIATED SOCIAL MEDIA SITE: HUMANS OF EMORY Started by College junior Bahar Amalfard and modeled after Humans of New York, Humans of Emory is a Facebook page dedicated to shots and stories of everyday Emory students. Targeting people around Emory with interesting tales and not necessarily the public-facing student leaders, Humans of Emory helps facilitate a strong sense of community and engagement across campus.

BEST HOUSING OPTION (ON CAMPUS): CRC Even though something can be said for the environment that first-year residence halls create, the CRC is the best option for someone who has to live on Emory’s campus. One, two or three-bedroom apartments offer real-life living without the outrageous price points other places offer. Additionally, enjoy the pool, the tennis courts, the SAAC and the shuttles to campus. If you’re an upperclassman not looking to pay an arm and a leg, CRC is the best place for you.

BEST MEME: THE BUZZFEED DRESS BEST HOUSING OPTION (OFF CAMPUS): EMORY POINT If you can afford an arm and a leg, spend your time recovering in your humbly bougie Emory Point apartment. Food, shopping, relaxation and more are all rolled into one here. The apartments look and feel adult without being stuffy, and their proximity to campus saves you time and money. Also, the pool is a lush oasis for you to enjoy and tan your troubles away.
