or the first time in decades, colleges across the nation have come together to completely revamp the college application process.

To simplify the process and render it more accessible to all students, Emory University and more than 80 other renowned public and private colleges, including all the Ivy League universities, have created a new alliance to implement a new application system for students applying to colleges in 2016.

Instead of replacing the Common Application with the new platform this upcoming application cycle, Emory, like other universities adopting the new system, will allow prospective students to choose one of the two application systems.

The alliance, called the Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success (CAAS), hopes to eliminate the high cost of applying to college that could deter many low-income potential college applicants.

Emory’s role as one of the core members in the coalition has allowed the University “to help chart the course of this new and ambitious effort,” John Latting, a board of directors member of the Coalition Group, wrote in an email to the Wheel. “I’m hopeful that there will be enthusiasm for this effort.”

Latting called this change an opportunity to innovate in an area that has been static since he applied to college in 1982, and possibly even before.

Portfolio The new system will deviate considerably from other applications in its writing section. Whereas past applicants had to tailor specific essays for specific schools, students will now have the option to link material from their personal portfolio, which includes a collection of their best works throughout high school, to their applications. The online portfolio system is scheduled to go live in January 2016.

The rationale behind the portfolio tool is to enable applicants to work on their applications over a long period of time so that they are not scrambling for ideas about their essays at the last minute.

Instead, the students can rely on work that they did throughout high school.

Students could potentially choose their best essays and papers from high school to add to their portfolio, rather than being required to complete numerous essays and supplements during the fall of their senior year. They can also include multimedia samples of their work, such as art pieces or music performance videos.

Although some schools may still require individual supplements, college admissions offices would offer consistent prompts that do not vary from year to year. In contrast, the Common Application ensured that students could not begin working on their applications beforehand by changing prompts yearly.

“The common app made applying fairly easy but being able to start applying the first year of high school — I can’t think of a better motivator for low-income students or a better way for a university to have an in-depth look at an applicant,” College freshman Victoria Rice wrote in an email to the Wheel.

However, some say the option of having portfolios would add to the stress of high school by forcing students to think about the admissions process early in their high school careers.

Leveling the Playing Field One of the main goals of the Coalition application is to relieve some of the financial burden of college applications by requiring every participating school to meet all of the demonstrated financial aid needs of admitted students.

Although Emory and certain other schools already meet the financial aid criterion, there are many other universities on the Common Application that do not do so.

The Coalition also gives applicants the option of sharing their portfolios with trusted advisors during the application process, whereas the Common Application is private, forcing students to manually send essays to advisors for feedback.

This could make a considerable difference for students who lack motivation to apply to high-ranked universities, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management at Purdue University Pamela T. Horne said in a 2015 Inside Higher Education article. She sees the potential for universities to advise students as early as ninth grade, allowing for the colleges to guide the rest of their high school experience and prepare them when the time comes for college applications.

Additionally, many say this interactive portfolio could reduce the advantage gap between high-income and low-income applicants as the admissions staff of colleges can serve as college counselors through the system.

Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Pomona College Seth Allen highlights this as one of the main ambitions of the Coalition, saying that it aims to serve students who do not have access to many of the resources that high-income applicants utilize, and “to create a communication system so that others can act as a proxy for a counselor by asking the right questions.”

Emory’s Transition Emory Admissions staff have been in-

ternally discussing the planned changes for the past two years. One of the main problems they noted with relying on the Common Application is that it places pressure on a single provider.

However, some find that having two options for application systems will lead to problems during the review process because colleges will be evaluating varied submissions from applicants.

“If one applicant on the Coalition application uses a portfolio item, while a Common App applicant uses an essay prompt, will it be easy to compare the qualities of the two submissions?” asked Associate Dean of College Counseling at Cranbrook Schools Patrick O’Connor.

However, Latting sees this as a positive aspect to the change rather than a negative.

“I suspect you’ll see differences between the two increase, as, hopefully, both explore ways to better serve their membership and the public. In particular, at some point we may see new types of evidence emerge to complement — or even replace — parts of the good, old college application as we now know it,” he wrote.

Ultimately, Latting believes that the Coalition initiative will help push Emory’s diversity efforts further. According to him, the change will translate to a stronger, more diverse applicant pool with respect to geography, demographics and socioeconomic factors.

“It will help us enroll even more diverse freshman classes, and provide the talent for even more lively and productive classroom environments,” he wrote.“Emory also has a special responsibility to make its excellence known, and accessible, to high-performing students everywhere. This new initiative can help us do just that.”

The ruling mandates that Emory pay about $12.5 million, which was about 60 percent of the total settlement, while DeKalb EMT is responsible to pay for the remaining 39 percent.

Defense attorney for the Emory Clinic Eric Frisch said that he hopes to appeal this decision, according to an Oct. 1 Daily Report article. Continued litigation is likely, according to Frisch.

The DeKalb Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Harris’s medical history, which included Type 2 diabetes, caused him to go into an unanticipated cardiac arrest during the sleep apnea study, the AJC reported.

The 2010 study was recorded on video and reviewed during the settlement. Harris reportedly asked for medical attention during the study, when he began to feel discomfort.

However, he was not immediately treated due to a lack of coordination between the Sleep Lab and DeKalb EMT, Attorney Jane Lamberti said while representing Harris’s family.

Frisch diverted responsibility from Emory, arguing that DeKalb EMT did not respond and attend to Harris in a timely manner, according to Daily Report. The defense also argued in favor of Emory’s medical staff.

“Emory’s portion of the pretrial declared that, while [David] Schulman did serve as the sleep center’s medical director, he had noth-

ble sleeping. Bhadriraju was held at no financial fault for Harris’s death.

However, Bhadriraju made mistakes, the prosecutor said in her argument against Emory.

Harris had always experienced shortness of breath when lying down and should have been on an incline during the study, she said, adding that Bhadriraju did not ensure that this happened.

Lewis could not stay with her son overnight because of the Sleep Lab’s policies, but she was comfortable with that because she “trusted that this was Emory University,” Lamberti added.

Lewis was relieved with the jury’s verdict and overjoyed to see justice for her son, according to the Cochran Firm Atlanta.

“For the first time in five years,” she said in Cochran press release, “I’ve been able to sleep.”

he Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library (MARBL) will take on a new name: the Stuart A. Rose Library.

The name change follows 1976 Goizueta Business School alumnus Stuart A. Rose’s donation of 22 rare books valuing more than $1 million to the library in 2011.

“The donation of this collection aims to make sure that students can access moments of wonder and the moments of joy while reading and doing research,” Rose said.

According to Charles Howard Candler Professor of Creative Writing and English Kevin Young, the collection includes the first editions of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights and L. Frank Baum’s

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, as well as works from Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes and others.

The name change follows a complete renovation of the library, featuring large conference rooms, colorful wall displays and a multitude of interactive screens, through which visitors can send and share documents.

“I think it’s perfect timing, really,” Young said. “This change serves as a complement to the space’s transformation and to the fact that more students and scholars than ever are recognizing the uniqueness of the Rose Library.”

The renovations and renaming will provide the Rose Library with “the capacity and the space to show off its collections and to have people interact with [the collections],” Young said, “He has a

great personal collection — one of the best collections, I think, in the world. It’s really lovely to be in [what is now] Stuart’s library.”

Around 60 guests and speakers gathered on the top floor of the Robert W. Woodruff Library for the dedication ceremony of the newly named library on Oct. 1. At the event, along with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a private luncheon, Rose spoke about his love for books.

“My joy in life has always been hunting for books,” Rose said. “The great thing I like about this collection is that for students, even just a glimpse outside their fields in MARBL would lead to their joy of learning [and] feeling the books – the joy of the original books and the joy of looking at the authors’ handwriting.”

Rose also explained that his humanities professor was the first person to expose him to the way college aims to develop students into well-rounded individuals.

As a business student, Rose enjoyed taking electives outside of his field and found that it helped him learn how to relate to different people as a businessman.

Collecting books from different fields allows him to connect with people who have various specialties.

University President James W. Wagner was present at the dedication ceremony.

“Stuart is truly a generous philanthropist who has great gift for collecting,” Wagner said. “He, of course, is also a rather accomplished alum in the University. As a businessman, he has been the CEO and now the executive board chair-

man for Rex Resources.”

Wagner added that the renovation of the library and the addition of Rose’s collection on campus closely align with the mission of the University — “to create, preserve, teach and apply our knowledge in the service of humanity.”

Enterprise CIO and Senior Vice Provost for Library Services and Digital Scholarship Rich Mendola pointed out the significant transformation that the Rose Library will bring to academic research of the Emory community and be-

“Rose really brings a unique and comprehensive collection to the library,” Mendola said. “A transformation is going on since students and scholars from various specialties, especially humanities, will be able to access rare and invaluable books and research resources.”

Yolanda Cooper, University librarian, and Rosemary Magee, director of Rose Library, introduced the library to the audience as an astonishing collection of materials, rare books, documents, ar-

tifacts, photographs and manuscripts from across the world.

“In this very room over the course of the fall semester, we will have at least 41 classes exploring rare materials and courses such as ‘History of Mexico,’ ‘American Religious Cultures,’ ‘Old English Language and Literature,’ ‘Medieval Heroes and Monsters’ [and] ‘Southern Women’s Writers,’ ” Magee said.

Rose has a stepdaughter who recently graduated from Emory and a niece who is currently enrolled at Oxford College,

according to Magee.

Sarah Freeman used the library’s Flannery O’Connor collection for her senior thesis last academic year, which included more than 600 letters from O’Connor to her mother.

“It is great to honor the people who are sustaining the collection of materials,” Freeman said, referring to Rose. “With all of the digitization of books, it is [reassuring] to see the preservation of manuscripts, especially first editions, and the people who are working to do that.”

The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, an online database providing information about slaves and slave trading voyages, will soon expand to include information about intraAmerican slave trade as well as have a new accessibility. The online database is supervised by two Emory faculty members in partnership with international scholars.

The project investigators — David Eltis, Robert W Woodruff professor emeritus in the Department of History, and Allen Tullos, history professor and co-director of the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS) — will be supervising a project to recode, enhance and sustain the current site for 18 months, funded by a July Digital Humanities Implementation Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Many historians are discovering more about the migration of slaves in intra-American slave trade, which refers to the migration of slaves within the United States after they left their original home.

This new project aims to add in-depth information about individual slaves to the database’s catalogue of information regarding voyages, the number of slaves on the voyages, where the voyages landed and more.

The team also hopes to translate the database into new languages, recode and create a more contemporary design as outlined in proj-

ect’s abstract. When the site first went online in 2008, it was written in a computer coding language that is now becoming obsolete, according to Tullos. Much of the funding from the new grant will go toward recoding the site into an updated computer language.

Along with recoding, they will alsotranslate the database into Spanish and Portuguese, since much of the slave trade involves Brazil and the West Indies. Finally, the database will feature dynamic pictures and maps that outline voyages or display a slave’s journey.

Roughly 25 years ago, international scholars began collecting information on slave voyages and had more than 11,000 distinct slave passageways by the late 1980s.

When Eltis and Stephen Behrendt — senior lecturer at the School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations at the Victoria University of Wellington — met in the British Public Record Office in 1990, they discovered that they were both studying British slave trades independent of one another.

They then decided that a multi-source dataset for slave data would help other scholars and students to study the trans-Atlantic slave voyages.

In 1999, the data collected was compiled onto a CD for public access. After publishing the CD, Eltis and David Richardson, economic history professor at the University of Hull, hoped to

overcome the lack of data on Latin American slave expeditions by embarking on a more intensive research project into Portuguese and Spanish language archives with funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Board of the United Kingdom.

In 2006, the National Endowment for the Humanities, funded by the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University, provided scholars with the opportunity to present the data online through a website. In 2006, Eltis led the team to construct the website in order to collaborate with scholars from different continents and the website was finally published in 2008.

Eltis and Tullos applied for this recent grant in February 2015 to hire more people to recode the site into an updated computer language.

According to Tullos, the ECDS and the Laney Graduate School, have provided server space and technical help for the database.

Tullos mentioned that University Librarian Yolanda Cooper and Dean of Laney Graduate School Lisa Tedesco also offered immense support.

Welborn-Wilson said she is also proud that, in a primarily male-dominated industry, ZON Technology is not only women-founded but entirely women-managed. Welborn-Wilson hopes that as the Powersol spreads, her team’s experiences will inspire more women to rise up in the business world.

“I’m really hopeful that people will see that you can be a strong woman, you can be a mom, you can be powerful and you can run a company as well as a man,” she said. “And we need more women at the top to continue to pay it forward.”

However, Welborn-Wilson firmly believes that her encouragement only applies to people that are willing to work hard. Tenaciousness, she stresses, is going to be a really important factor for people graduating today, especially for the new generation of business leaders.

“Ideas are a dime a dozen,” she says. “If you can execute, and build the right team around you — regardless of male or female — you really can do what you want to do as long as you’re willing to get a bit beat up along the way.”

The Barkley Forum Center for Debate Education has decided to take a more proactive role to focus on fostering healthy debate about social justice issues on campus and create effective student advocates in response to a diversifying student body.

“The growing diversity of the campus [created] a greater need for dialogue across difference,” said Bill Newnam, associate director of forensics at the Barkley Forum. “Collectively, the staff felt that our expertise in communication, argument, rhetoric and research, rather than a commitment to one particular cause, made us the ideal organization to assist the entire campus.”

There are three major components of the Barkley Forum: the competitive debate team, campus engagement — which includes efforts to promote student activism — and community outreach.

Previously, the team would model or moderate a debate for classes or clubs upon request. In an effort to move beyond the description of a competitive debate team, the Barkley Forum Center for Debate Education changed its name from Barkley Forum in 2014.

“Now, [promoting student activism] is a much more

proactive element of what we do,” Newnam said. “We help initiate programs [and] we make ourselves more publically available so that other groups know that if they want to come to us, we are here.”

This year, the team has sponsored two events — an open dialogue on the role of racial and gender identity in early September and a competitive debate between a Freedom University team and the Emory team on Sept.

The Forum also acts as an advisor to Eagles Speak — a two-year-old student-run program that encourages student involvement in activism by planning discussions and events that focus on topics of special interest to students. Eagle Speak will feature a more studentrun environment with a team of professional coordinators in the hopes of facilitating positive engagement on controversial topics.

“People aren’t comfortable going outside their own skin or showing themselves too easily, and we want people to feel comfortable doing that, so we try to both encourage and do that, and to model that for others,”

On Oct. 2 at 7:24 p.m., the Emory Police Department (EPD) responded to a call regarding a stolen laptop at the Goizueta Business School. An individual left their Macbook on a bench in the building at 5 p.m., and when they returned, the laptop was missing. The laptop is valued at $2000. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

On Oct. 3 at 3:12 a.m., EPD responded to a call regarding an underage indi-

vidual under the influence of alcohol at Dobbs Hall. While Emory Emergency Medical Services (EEMS) was responding to the individual, another intoxicated individual at the location also needed medical attention. Both individuals were transported to Emory University Hospital. Campus Life was notified.

Newman said. Some events will be more presentational with two groups debating while other events will focus on an interactive discussion.

The third leg of the group, community outreach, centers around the Urban Debate League — a program sponsored by the Forum where Emory debate students teach middle school or high school students who wouldn’t otherwise have access to learning about debate and the basics of argumentation.

“They will see, when in these programs, that there are disparities of opportunity that are vastly different depending on who they are working with and the situation they are in,” Newnam said. “It’s not just [about] activism for a moment, but it’s teaching how to be activists throughout your lifetime.”

College sophomore Eric Marcus is currently pursuing a second initiative within the Urban Debate League to involve debating in non-English languages.

“This would be sort of a venue to give [others] the same thing that they are not able to participate in within the English debate league or maybe don’t feel comfortable participating in,” he said.

North Face jacket and some change was taken from a 1999 Chevrolet Prizm that was parked there overnight. A Nissan Xterra was also broken into around the same time that evening. A guitar and it’s case were removed from the vehicle. The guitar case was found outside the parking deck but the guitar was missing.

The case has been turned over to an investigator.

On Oct. 3 at 2:32 p.m., EPD and DeKalb Fire & Rescue responded to a fire in Clairmont Tower. An oven caught on fire in a kitchen at the location. The fire was extinguished and there was no damage to the building other than to the oven.

On Oct. 3 at 8:19 p.m., EPD responded to an animal complaint at Clairmont

Campus. A student called EPD about a pet sugar glider that was let loose in a residential apartment. EPD responded to a similar complaint regarding the sugar glider last week. The Resident Advisor at the location is in the process of making accommodations for alternate housing due to the continuing issue between the roommates.

On Oct. 3 at 11:03 p.m., EPD responded to a call regarding an underage individual under the influence of alcohol in front of Longstreet-Means Hall.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the individual unconscious on a bench. EEMS arrived on the scene and transported the individual to Emory University Hospital. Campus Life was notified.

The case for a Common App alternative

S

everal days ago, 80 colleges including Emory University announced their plans to begin using an alternative to the Common Application. The group of colleges — known as the Coalition for Access, Affordability and Success (CAAS) — seeks to increase accessibility and reduce the difficulties of the process for underrepresented groups, particularly low-income and first-generation college students. We at the Wheel have high hopes for this system and think it is a step toward making higher education an achievable goal for all.

The colleges involved are working to shift much of the footwork in the application process from the student’s senior year in high school to his or her four years of high school by instituting a new system in which students can submit a portfolio of their work when applying.

Students can choose which essays, audio clips or videos from their high school career they would like to include in their portfolio. Prospective Emory students in 2016 can apply using this application or the Common App during this trial period.

This portfolio will be stored on an online database that college counselors and mentors can access to comment so that a student can receive feedback and advice.

This could encourage more students to apply to college, relieving some of the stress associated with the mad crunch of the application process.

The current Common App system has a tedious and complicated feedback system, and discourages students from discussing their ap-

plication with their counselor. The result is that only a wealthy, privileged few can afford to hire private college counselors to guide them through each and every step of the process. This application change will hopefully level the playing field for some.

Next, and perhaps most encouragingly, the Coalition will require all of its private member institutions to meet a hundred percent of its admitted students’ demonstrated financial need. Currently, 62 schools claim to meet 100 percent of demonstrated financial need, and this requirement by the Coalition, which includes many of the the top-ranked schools in the country, will hopefully encourage other schools to reconsider their current practices.

Our current reservations about the system center primarily around those students who are uncertain or undecided about attending college until late in their high school career. These students could be discouraged from beginning the process if they are starting later than their peers.

Finally, it is important that schools like Emory exercise caution and care with the new avenue for applicants. The University must be meticulous about enacting special measures that allow for a fair comparison between a student applying through the Common App and one using the Coalition Application.

While the process of making college accessible for everyone is a challenge that much of the nation faces, this new initiative has potential to begin a cascade of change and make meaningful diversity an achievable goal.

@NSAGov, you have a new follower Ben Perlmutter | College Senior

L

ast week, Edward Snowden, controversial privacy activist and notorious government leaker, #BrokeTheInternet when he joined Twitter. In his first tweet, he asked, “Can you hear me now?”

Beginning with this mocking reference to the series of mid-2000s Verizon commercials, he has since released a series of tweets about government surveillance and accountability.

His Twitter handle @Snowden quickly accumulated more than 1.3 million followers in three days. While so many follow him, he is only following one Twitter account —the National Security Agency (NSA), the government agency that Snowden revealed in 2013 to be operating massive secret domestic and international surveillance programs.

Joining Twitter has brought Snowden to the headlines recently, but this runs contrary to a larger trend of his revelations about the NSA fading from the American public consciousness. Maybe his new Twitter account will keep the ember of this important issue burning so that the American public can comprehensively address its implications.

Discussion of the scope of NSA surveillance has been conspicuously lacking from the presidential campaign circus.

In the most recent Republican debate, many subjects were covered, ranging from the false (Carly Fiorina’s comments about the Planned Parenthood video) to the farcical (“What woman would you put on the $10 bill?” and more or less everything emitted from The Donald’s mouth). Occasionally interspersed amongst the reality show of a debate, the prospective holders of the nation’s nuclear codes (*shudder*) touched upon substantive policy issues.

Yet, conspicuously lacking from the debate was any mention of Edward Snowden and the revelations that he leaked in 2013 about the NSA. This omission from the debate is part of a bipartisan movement in American politics to forget that the Snowden’s revelations occurred and maintains the NSA’s surveillance infrastructure.

When Snowden first exposed that the NSA had been spying on the phone calls of tens of millions of Americans, obtaining personal information from Internet companies and spying on foreign governments in 2013, the information took the world by storm. His subsequent flight to Moscow, where he remains to this day, gave the story an air of drama not often seen outside the movies.

The Department of Justice subsequently charged Snowden with three felony charges that, if he is convicted, could land him in prison for up to 30 years Despite the gravity of Snowden’s revelations and their former prominence, discussion of them has all but left the public forum.

The NSA’s operations were last publicly discussed this past spring, when Obama reauthorized controversial parts of the Patriot Act and placed restrictions on NSA spying.

The passing of the USA Freedom Act overruled a May Court of Appeals Second Circuit decision ruling that the NSA program was illegal.

The USA Freedom Act essentially legitimized the NSA’s previously secret and illegal operations. We will have to wait on another court decision to see if the USA Freedom Act is illegal as well.

The current crop of presidential candidates has scarcely discussed the issue. While the Republicans try to say controversial things to get their voice heard over Trump, Clinton remains bogged down in a politicized email scandal and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders discusses more socioeconomic issues, we are ignoring the greatest encroachment on our liberties in recent memory.

In the first Republican debate over the summer, the NSA was only mentioned once in a spat between Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, with Paul criticizing the NSA’s activities and Christie supporting them.

In the rare instances when the NSA comes up, most of the other presidential candidates — both Republican and Democrat — have stood behind the NSA’s intrusive policies. Clinton endorsed the USA Freedom Act, but beyond that, has not said much about the NSA. Jeb Bush offered a rare endorsement of an Obama policy regarding the NSA: “I would say the best part of the Obama administration would be his continuance of the protections of the homeland using, you know, the big metadata programs, the NSA being enhanced.”

Paul has been one of the most vocal supporters of reigning in the NSA. Last May, Paul staged a more than 12-hour filibuster to publicize reforming the NSA during Senate debate over the USA Freedom Act. But it looks as if we may lose Paul’s voice in the presidential discussion. The Kentucky senator is polling at less than three percent nationally right now, a threshold too low to qualify for the next Republican GRAPHIC BY MORGAN ROBERTS | DIGITAL EDITOR debate at the end of the month. (Besides Paul, Sanders is the only other presidential candidate who is opposed to the USA Freedom Act. He has failed to emphasize it as an important issue, though.

There is a legitimate debate about whether the NSA surveillance programs should persist. Advocates for the surveillance say it keeps America safe; opponents call it a violation of fundamental constitutional rights. There may not be a clear answer here.

Maybe it does keep us safer while encroaching upon our rights.

Perhaps even more concerning is that the government hid these programs from us until Snowden had the courage to reveal them.

Regardless of your position on the NSA surveillance, it is undeniable that it is one of the axial issues of our time. If we do not adequately address the scope of government surveillance and the transparency with which it is carried out, we risk allowing the country to descend down a dismal and possibly dystopian path.

We must publicly discuss the scope of the NSA’s activities, or, at the very least, follow @Snowden on Twitter.

... and investigators are no more likely to solve a case today than they were back then.

ay 14, 2015. 1:30 p.m.

Washington, D.C. police respond to a call regarding a house fire on Woodland Drive. Upon entry, the firefighters see nothing out of the ordinary. A tidy home — mansion, rather — that seems to have been the unfortunate victim of an even more unfortunate disaster. But what they find upstairs will lead to one of the biggest investigations the city has ever seen.

Four bodies — a couple eventually identified as Savvas and Amy Savopoulos, known for owning and running the country’s multi-million dollar iron company, American Iron Works; an older woman, their housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa; and a 10 year-old boy, the couple’s son, Philip. Four bodies and absolutely no sign of a killer.

The Savopoulos family lives only a few blocks down from Vice President Joe Biden.

Thus, the most advanced agents, policemen, and law officials in Washington D.C (and the nation) were put to the test with this case. Still, an immediate investigation yields confusing bits of information.

A man who worked for the Savopoulos family comes forward, claiming that he was told by his boss to leave $40,000 in the garage the night before the family was murdered. Surveillance footage near a gas station shows that a man in a hooded sweatshirt set afire one of the family’s cars, miles away from their residence. A full timeline of the events preceding the murders implies that the family was held hostage for almost 72 hours. And the fire that initially drew police to the scene appears to have been intentional, a failed attempt to burn away any evidence that may have linked the murderer to his crime.

Eventually, saliva on a piece of pizza allows police to track down one (and only one) man, Daron Wint, who is ultimately charged and jailed for four counts of firstdegree murder.

It seems like a victory for D.C. Police and the forensic system used to find the man linked to this terrifying crime. But what makes this case so different from the 15,000 murders that take place in this country annually is the startling number of unanswered questions that are left behind.

How did one man hold three adults and one child hostage for so long? Who was the man in the footage involving the burning car (face matching software confirmed that it was not Wirt)? Why would a man kill two multi-millionaires for 40 grand?

And in a house holding valuables worth more than that amount? Who else was involved in these murders?

How is it possible that four people are dead, and there is only enough evidence to put one man behind bars? A man who, may I add, has alluded many times to having had multiple accomplices.

Regardless of these questions and the answers we may never find, this case brings

to light a much larger and pressing concern: the number of murder cases that go cold, unfinished and unsolved every year.

Consider this: more than 211,000 homicides committed in or after 1980 to this day remain unsolved — a total body count that exceeds the population of thousands of cities around the nation. The FBI reports that the national homicide rate is an average of about 14,827 deaths a year. Let’s do the math: 14,827 deaths per year for 35 years make a grand total of about 518,945 killings between 1980 and 2015.

That means that 40.65 percent of the murders that take place in the most advanced country in the world go completely cold.

And that is the unwavering truth.

So forget what “Criminal Minds” tells you — the vast majority of murders are not solved within the hour, and there are few happy endings. In fact, investigators are no more likely to solve a homicide case today than they were 40 years ago.

In fact, things seem to be getting worse.

Reporter Thomas Hargrove writes, “The rates at which homicides are considered cleared — meaning someone was actually arrested and handed over to the courts for trial — have declined alarmingly in America. The FBI estimates that the homicide clearance rate in 2012 was only 64 percent, down from 90 percent reported in 1965 when the government first reported statistics. In many communities, it has become statistically unlikely that a murder will be solved. The Detroit Police Department reported making arrests in only 34 of its 386 homicides in 2012, which is a solution rate of only 9 percent. New Orleans reported solving only 15 percent of its 193 killings that year.”

How is this possible? How can technology and society have both advanced so far in the past decade without having impacted this field at all?

During an exclusive segment on the issue, NPR came up with some reasons why this disturbing trend of unsolved homicides may exist, including higher standards for charging a suspect, distrust of the police, focusing on crime prevention and the expensiveness of homicide investigation in poor communities.

Although these reasons appear comforting, they provide little in the large scale of things. Furthermore, none of these apply specifically to the Savopoulos murders.

And while one can argue that their case is an exception, the hundreds of stories that ravage the Internet with a single search of the word “murder” imply that it is not.

Perhaps it is the way our police departments are funded. Or the priorities of our criminal justice system.

But maybe, just maybe, there is a much deeper problem at hand. A problem that allows for cold-blooded killers to remain unchained and free to walk among us without any fear of being caught, tried and punished for their horrifying and inhumane crimes.

Free speech, some exceptions Jonathan Warkentine College Senior

read with interest Elana Cates’ editorial proclaiming “free speech, no exceptions.” I admire her fire, her facts and her ire. Cates is absolutely correct about one thing: freedom of speech has been seriously jeopardized on the American campus. Just the other week, I encountered a professor’s handout, which was a photocopy of a 20th century logic handbook, in which in an illustration “housewife” had been blacked out and “homeowner” scribbled in its place — like trying to put whiteout over virtually all of domestic history.

As Cates rightly points out, and as has been observed in sociological studies, instead of seeking to understand differences, those on American campuses are far too eager to be offended, to lament others’ insensitivities and to involve the community and the authorities.

I nevertheless have reservations on Cates’ conclusion.

To begin with, there are absolutely exceptions to free speech – legal exceptions, in fact which include: child pornography, incitement, sexual obscenity without literary, artistic, political or scientific value and “fighting words and offensive speech.”

And no, this is not a “slippery slope;” these are rules that have always been here and should always stay here, for good reason.

Part of Cates’ confusion, I imagine, boils down to her understanding of why free speech exists. No, it’s not for people “to express themselves.” In the Supreme Court case Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire, the Court ruled against Chaplinsky’s freedom to profanity and offensive speech.

“It has been well observed,” wrote Justice Frank Murphy, “that such utterances are no essential part of any exposition of ideas and are of such slight social value as a step to truth that any benefit that may be derived from them is clearly outweighed by the social interest in order and morality.”

Now, is the law unjust in legally restraining Chaplinsky from cussing out a police officer? Is Chaplinsky not entitled to express his hatred, his vitriol and his dissent?

Indubitably. Only, as a society, we have an expectation that ideas of any sort should be presented civilly. You’ll notice the thrust of Justice Murphy’s statement, that

public discourse should be a “step to truth.” This is why we must protect free speech.

This idea must color our interpretation of Voltaire’s famous maxim, which Cates quotes: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Voltaire’s point, however, is concerned not with form, but with content. That is, Voltaire would surely die for your right to accuse him of being wrong and for your right to provide reasons and evidence to that end.

But we’d be ridiculous to think that he’d die for your right to insult and condescend in that process.

There is such a thing as civil discourse. There is such a thing as respect for inherent human dignity. We needn’t degrade a person with ad hominem attacks to engage their ideas in dialogue, even if we hold that those ideas are patently and hideously false. Even if we think their ideas are dangerous to the world at large. That was the logic of the Spanish Inquisition in the 15th century; we need not revert to that.

Now, personal attacks, slurs, condescension and offensiveness often fall perfectly within the bounds of the law (à la Westboro Baptist Church). The perpetrators of the Charlie Hebdo massacre were certainly wrong to assert it as a capital offense. Now, needless religious, cultural or ideological insensitivity and offensiveness do, however, constitute abuse of a right reserved to promote honest dialogue without fear of thought-crime, a right purposed to create space for honest discourse in “good faith” – with nothing checked in at the door.

This is why I lost Cates when she mentioned Rushdie.

I wrote on Rushdie’s commencement earlier this semester and maintain that his lack of decorum was unacceptable in a rational, professional and civil discourse.

I cannot appreciate that a man of Rushdie’s supposed academic caliber would say, in a professional setting, that “ ... people seem ready to believe almost anything ... God, for instance,” and then would add, chuckling patronizingly, “Shocking how many Americans swallow that old story.”

I’m incredulous that such a thing would be defended.

If Rushdie had said this about transgenderism or rape culture, calling it an “ancient fiction,” he would have

been crucified. His statement neither affirms nor acknowledges any theist’s dignity as a human being. It does not concede interest in dialogue nor in the pursuit of truth.

But in defense of people like Rushdie, maybe we have to exercise the furthest limits of our rights to remind ourselves that we really are free. Maybe that’s what it takes to wake us up to the reality of free speech: a grown, educated man spitting on those who think differently.

Maybe it takes someone we respect giving voice not only to controversial ideas, but also doing so in a manner calculated to incite offense and belittlement. All this goes to show us exactly how far our rights to free speech extend. Yet this isn’t something to be celebrated or “proud” of, as Cates writes.

When it takes someone of Rushdie’s regard to remind us that free speech includes unproductive condescension, we should be sobered, reminded of how fragile and fleeting our sense of freedom must have grown to garner this reminder.

So yes, there are and need be restrictions on free speech. Some legal, but most self-imposed, in the interest of civil, rational discourse and the pursuit of truth – as we affirm each other’s worth as human beings, stepping outside ourselves in an attempt to understand the other. This must not be conflated with censorship of ideas nor of the self; only when we are truly committed to ours and others’ ideas and selves will we embrace this limitation on our legal rights.

When I Googled “offensive free speech” over the course of writing this article, Google autosuggested “offensive French words.” This, to me, illustrates very well our free speech predicament: people are going out of their way to needlessly offend people. Worse, people are going out of their way to be offended.

As my high school civics teacher summarized, free speech was not created for the kindergartener intent on screaming “poop” in the classroom; it’s for the once martyr, the man or woman who no longer faces death and persecution in being true to his or her convictions – but within the confines of an empathetic and dialogical pursuit of truth.

Former U.S. Poet Laureate

“P

oetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful,” former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove said. As a former poet laureate, Dove stands amongst the most talented poets of America who have served in that position. Each poet laureate leaves a legacy of creativity and innovation and this past Thursday, Emory welcomed former U.S. Poet Laureate Charles Wright.

On Oct. 1, scores of people gathered in the Emerson Concert Hall to listen to Wright give a reading. A poet with over 20 books, Wright read his poems.

The poems were both from past books and his most recently published work, Caribou (2014).

Before the night began, Rosemary Magee, director of Emory’s newly named Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library (MARBL), announced to the audience that the event marked the 10th anniversary of the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library Reading Series.

Wright’s reading is the first of this year’s reading series, which began in 2005 with Creative Writing Professor and Curator of MARBL and the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library, Kevin Young, as the first reader.

Each year, the reading series invites some of the best poets from across the globe to read their works. The series is sponsored by the Creative Writing Program

at Emory, MARBL and Emory Libraries.

Head of the Poetry and Literature Center at the Library of Congress Robert Casper followed Magee, sharing part of the Library of Congress’ mission statement “to further the progress of knowledge and creativity.”

A representative of the Library of Congress, which appoints the poet laureate of the U.S., Casper praised Emory for its efforts in working toward this purpose.

Casper then welcomed Young to the stage.

Young said a few words about Wright and and his creative work before introducing him.

“Wright means to guide us in our living … to help the soul’s journey,” Young said.

He then continued to talk about Wright’s poetry, calling it “physical and metaphysical,” as the poems provide a sort of instructional insight into human experience.

“His poetry gives us a reason not just to live, but to believe,” Young said.

Wright then proceeded to the stage amidst applause, which softened to a respectful silence when the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner began to speak. He began with his poem “Ars Poetica,” Latin for “Art of Poetry.” According to Wright, the poem was written in Laguna Beach, California in a “windowless room carved in the back of a garage.”

Before almost every poem, Wright offered some information about the poem’s content and the context in which he wrote the poem.

At one point in the night, Wright explained the context of two of his more popular poems titled “Body and Soul” and “Body and Soul 2.”

It was inspired by Coleman Hawkins, a famous saxophone player who performed and recorded a particularly inventive version of the song of the same name in 1939, “Body and Soul.”

The poems illustrate the inherent human longing for immortality while expressing the musicality of language.

These two themes echo throughout Wright’s other works as well.

“These poems are about language [and] the music I can get out of language,” Wright said of the themes in his work. “I talk about language in all my poems.”

He also seemed to find humor in his poems. After reading his poem, “Miles Davis and Elizabeth Bishop Fake the Break,” he even paused and laughed in spite of his award-winning work.

“I don’t know what any of my poems mean,” he admitted lightheartedly. “They come to me in a trance, and I write them down, and then I can’t read ‘em.”

In accordance with the musical nature of his poetry, Wright has a poem titled “Lullaby,” found in Caribou.

He writes: “I’ve said what I had to say / As melodiously as it was given to me.”

Fittingly chosen as the night’s last poem, “Lullaby” speaks of a “time to go” and a “time to say goodnight.”

After Wright finished his reading, he stayed to sign copies of his books.

People gathered outside the concert hall, purchasing books and waiting in line to spend a few minutes with one of the most honored poets of our time.

In addition to the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, Wright is also a winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and the 2008 Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress.

“I really enjoyed his sense of humor and how he is able to add a little something into his poetry beyond just the reading,” College freshman Ilana Ander said of the reading.

“His poetry gives us a reason not just to live, but to believe.”

Time is another nebulous human concept that he tackles creatively in many of his poems.

Wright seems to accept this as his job; he makes something meaningful from what seemingly is not meaningful; he tries to make sense of the parts of life that most people do not dare to contemplate.

In his introduction of Wright, Young expressed a similar sentiment.

“What’s amazing about Wright is not just the face

She was also pleased that Emory brings poets to a university that feels so centered around science.

Through the Raymond Danowski Reading Series, aspiring writers and lovers of literature can learn about and enjoy the works of great artistic minds.

Thursday night was a testament to Emory’s dedication to the promotion of the arts, as new and old fans alike walked away with a newfound appreciation not only for Wright’s work but for the creative arts.

T

o understand the experience of watching Sicario, imagine a knee firmly planted into your chest.

No matter how much you try to breathe, you can’t. There’s no relief, no lessening of pressure — just less and less air entering your lungs until the knee finally comes off your chest.

You can breathe again, but the air is a little less crisp, the breathing a little more painful. Sicario is cinematic suffocation.

I am to assure you that I mean that in a positive way.

The latest from director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners), the hottest Francophone director since Luc Besson (Lucy, La Femme Nikita), Sicario is a story of death, cartels and the evil that men do. Emily Blunt plays Kate Macer, a highly competent FBI agent who busts drug activity in Arizona.

Her competence gets her pulled into a CIA operation led by Matt Graver

(Josh Brolin) and assisted by the mysterious Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro). The film becomes a swirl of duplicitous and secret purpose operations as Kate is swept about in this CIA operation’s war against the Mexican cartels.

From a technical perspective, this film is damned near flawless. Direc-

mately asks of her. Brolin’s cocksure self-assurance and Del Toro’s ability to put so much behind the eyes of a dead-eyed character fill out what otherwise could have easily been two-dimensional supporting characters.

It’s a strong core and they’re surrounded by phenomenal supporting character actors.

It’s a highly compelling story. The script by Taylor Sheridan is tightly constructed and tense beyond belief. It fully believes that there’s never a moment where you cannot crank up cinematic tension, and the movie feels a hair trigger away from violence at every moment. The script takes conceptions of masculine power, feelings of powerlessness and power and the very real darkness and evil that exists in this world and blends it into a perfectly cinematic story.

It’s a whole crew that’s putting together a really tight, top notch and incredibly well-made film.

So why don’t I love it?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I like it a lot.

Clearly. It’s very difficult to not enjoy a film this well-made. But something about this film doesn’t take it to the next level — the level of recommending it to everyone, the level of wanting to watch it again. It’s great, but I have no particular desire

point. Sicario is a poignant morally gray thriller until the time comes to let the bullets start flying, then it lets its ideas take a backseat to how well it can stage an action scene.

Even more so, maybe it’s the coldness that Villeneuve seems to bring to his films.

Everything he makes is shot with a very professional distance. It’s something that David Fincher (Gone Girl, Fight Club), a director I love deeply, has been accused of.

But Fincher lets himself be imprinted onto the film, lets some part of himself play into what goes on screen. Villeneuve stands back and lets the film happen.

His craft is on display, but what is rarely on display is who he is as an artist.

Sicario feels immaculately crafted, but so desperate for someone to come closer, bring a personal perspective to what’s going on.

Sicario is a film you’re really going to enjoy.

It’s non-stop, sucking-the-air-outof-your-lungs intense and incredibly well-made.

But when it’s over, there’s a thought in the back of your head, a thought about something that wasn’t quite there and that could have been.

A thought that keeps it from being one of the absolute best movies of the year.

Grade: B+

Anime Weekend Atlanta: The convention with a thousand attractions

erd culture is running rampant, and it’s great.

It’s always fun to gather a bunch of people with a similar passion, put them all in the same room — or rather, convention center — and see what happens.

In this case, that passion is anime. The place? The Cobb Galleria Centre. And what happens?

The answer is Anime Weekend Atlanta (AWA).

AWA is a long-standing Atlanta tradition held annually during the last weekend of September since 1995. This year, it was a four-day event lasting from Thursday, Sept. 24 to Sunday, Sept. 27. It was organized to provide a way for fans of Japanese animation and manga to come together and celebrate their shared passion — and boy, does it do that well.

There’s a lot that goes into this convention. It’s the largest anime convention in the Southeast and one of the top ten most-attended anime conventions in the country — last year, it boasted over 20,000 attendees.

Though it centers itself around anime, there are many other platforms that AWA also puts in the spotlight. The convention centre is huge, and every room has its own distinct theme. The biggest room is the “Dealer’s Room,” where fans line up to get autographs and meet the voice actors from their favorite shows and vendors who set up their stalls to sell all sorts of goods, including video games, stuffed animals, costume pieces, clothing and posters.

Also in this room is “Artist Alley,” which has rows and rows of artists showing off their work and selling prints, handsewed characters, accessories and knick-knacks.

Many of the artists also sell their work online.

In the main hallway, you find all sorts of people taking a break from the excitement.

Most are dressed up as their favorite anime characters, a tradition known as “cosplaying.”

My favorite part of AWA is looking at the cosplayers. There’s something about the dedication and care that goes into the costumes — people often make their cosplays by hand, sewing dresses together, curling the hair on wigs just right, and crafting perfectly detailed masks and armor. Some also make their own weapons, though there are certain rules that limit what you can bring to the convention.

Two years ago, the halls filled with cosplayers for Attack on Titan and Free! This year, those once popular cosplays have been replaced by none other than the characters from the show Steven Universe.

The number of Rose cosplayers was unbelievable, and there was an endless amount of Pearls and Sapphires — not to mention the titular character himself, Steven.

There were a number of people cosplaying as non-anime characters as well. AWA always has a handful of Disney princess cosplayers, and there was even a pair of girls dressed as Max Caulfield and Chloe Price, a dynamic female duo from the video game, Life is Strange.

Upstairs in the Cobb Galleria Centre is a particularly long, thin hallway with endless doors running down each side. Behind each of these doors is a room for tabletop gaming.

“Magic: The Gathering,” “Cards Against Humanity” and “Dungeons and Dragons” make up just a fraction of what’s available to play here at the Tabletop Gaming Festival.

In other parts of the convention center, there are countless events and panels going on throughout the weekend. There are workshops in game design and writing, art lessons, seminars on cosplay creation and care, character design classes, sessions about specific animes, webcomic seminars, karaoke, trivia, cosplay contests and so much more.

A few panel titles that stuck out include “Awesomely Bad Japanese Music Videos,” “Bad American Dubbing: A Retrospective,” “Anime Hell,” “Otaku Bellydance” and “Shakespeare as Performed by Anime Characters.”

If that doesn’t make you want to go to AWA, I don’t know what will.

AWA is truly a delightful experience, and it’s always an adventure. If you’re someone who’s been on the fence about going, and you’ll be in the area next September, I recommend checking it out.

You can buy a full weekend pass, a two-day pass or a single-day pass, and they’re all worth it.

There’s always something to do at AWA, and there’s something for every nerd to enjoy — you’ll never get bored.

n a university setting, many foreign language professors will sometimes be flanked by teaching assistants (TAs), some of whom are students themselves and still in the process of learning about the language.

This year, one section each of the introductory German and Portuguese courses is being taught by Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTA) Marilies Terzer and Felipe Leandro de Jesus, respectively.

Each year, with the Institute of International Education, the Fulbright program sends hundreds of scholars all over the United States to teach students their native language and culture in colleges and universities.

The application process for the position is both very selective and very long. Students begin by submitting their application in January. The Fulbright Commissions and Embassies (FCE) collect and compile the applications throughout the winter. In the spring they select primary and alternate candidates, who are then interviewed before the end of October.

The nominee panels are submitted by the FCE and are then sent to U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to be reviewed by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. The nominations have until April to get approved, when host institutions are matched with students based on the criteria of the university or college. The institution then selects the students they wish to host, who have until May to accept the offer.

While most of these scholars assist professors in foreign language classes, as the program name indicates, Emory is part of the few institutions that permit the students to be the primary instructors, hoping to enhance and maximize the learning experience of FLTAs who are very qualified not only in their native tongue but in the field of linguistics and teaching.

While it is uncommon to have classes taught by professors without doctorates at post-secondary institutions, these Fulbright scholars have many qualities that make them appropriate teachers at a university full of PhDs. FLTAs bring to the table a number of skills that some Emory student TAs and professors cannot.

“We have the actual cultural background and more credibility than TAs,” Austrian native Terzer said.

By teaching notions regarding both language (syntax and conjugation) and culture (literature and history) that are more than conceptual knowledge or theory, the FLTAs are able to provide an education that is holistic, practical and personal.

“If you are not immersed into the context of the country, you are not going to have a native-like level of proficiency,” Brazil native de Jesus said. “The most

important thing is that I can teach students about my own culture. ” This contributes not only to the FLTAs’ experience as teachers but also to the Emory students’ experience as learners.

“Even if you are from here, if you are American, and you are studying Brazilian culture, you have to go these places at some point, to get to know the real thing,” de Jesus said. “If you only study through books, you’re only going to have theoretical knowledge. You need the practical knowledge.”

Although a majority of language professors, especially in higher education, are native speakers and native to the culture they are teaching, the FLTAs have the additional advantage of having proximity in age to their students.

While some may underestimate the potential of these FLTAs, de Jesus, who completed his masters just four days before leaving for Emory, explained how he can provide these students with more than just pedagogical knowledge. He is capable of sharing a unique

interpersonal experience with students.

“I understand what [my students] are going through,” de Jesus said. “I have been going through what they are going through right now very recently, so I know how they are feeling about life. We have similar tastes when it comes to things like entertainment and music and many other things. We share things and we have things in common.”

Terzer agreed with the idea of accessibility to her students, noticing the ease with which her students can communicate with her compared to her colleagues.

Despite the skepticism of some students and colleagues about their capabilities, neither FLTA is new to teaching.

Terzer studied English and Spanish teaching at the University of Vienna and de Jesus has been teaching since he was 17 years old, so they already possess the foundational skills.

As part of their visa, Terzer and de Jesus get to take two courses at Emory as non-degree students, which, according to Terzer, have proved to be helpful in both their language skills and teaching abilities.

“I am taking Spanish Phonetics and Phonology, as there is no such course in Vienna,” Terzer said.

She is also in “Becoming the Buddha in America” to take a break from languages and teaching, and “just because I am interested in Buddhism,” she said.

De Jesus chose classes around language, but with different motivations. He hoped that taking a language class would help him gain confidence in his ability of teaching a language.

He described his experience as a student in the classroom, in his German language course.

the perspective of the students,” de Jesus said.

According to de Jesus, language courses have proven useful not only for helping him understand language from the student’s mind, but also in his teaching methods.

“Sometimes I plan something for my classes and I think ‘Oh, my students are not going to like that’ and then when the instructor does the same thing, I think ‘I’m actually not bothered by this, it’s okay.’ It’s a sort of validation,” de Jesus said.

De Jesus is also taking a graduate class on queer theory, related to the research he did for his masters in Brazil.

Even with the influx of new experience and knowledge coming in everyday for the FLTAs, the biggest adjustment isn’t directly correlated to language or teaching.

The biggest adjustment is “getting settled [and having everything done] in a completely different country, on your own,” Terzer said.

Although de Jesus found the country shift challenging as well, he also found a challenge in developing interpersonal relationships.

“When you talk to people, even when you greet people, it’s very different,” de Jesus said. “It’s very, very different [from] what I was used to. At these famous or prestigious universities such as Emory, I am really surprised at how much my students care about grades.

They are always about worried about getting an A.” Although de Jesus was a bit confounded by the infamous and unending angst concerning grades of many Emory students, de Jesus has learned to make something good of it.

“They really study, which is not very common in Brazil. If I tell my students to do something tomorrow, I can plan my classes and take into consideration that they’ve done the homework,” de Jesus said. “I love this fact about the American students. They are really committed.”

mory Emergency Medical Services (EEMS) is a student-operated volunteer EMS agency.

Many EEMS volunteers are students at Emory. These students are drawn to the program for various reasons and take an in-house course over an academic year.

College senior and Emory EMS Chief Morgan Taylor has worked for the unit for three years.

“I’ve been in love with medicine ever since I was eight years old, and I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give hands-on patient care and ultimately have responsibility for my patients,” Taylor said.

College sophomore Katherine Morford, who has been an AEMT for about a year, trained to be a lifeguard when she was in high school, but had never gotten a chance to apply the skills that she learned. Being a part of the Emory EMS

program finally presented her with an opportunity to learn and put those skills to use.

“It was a good way for me to dip my toe into the healthcare industry without starting a pre-health track or committing to medical school. That, and it is always a nice to know how to save someone’s life,” Morford said.

According to Taylor, the responsibility is the best part of being an EMT — having responsibility for patient care and the chance to establish a rapport with her patients.

“Emory EMS is the only experience I’ve had that gives me direct responsibility for my patients. In those first few minutes of treating a patient, we can provide immediate, life-saving care,” Taylor said.

Another part of being an EMT is being able to comfort the patients who may be terrified and experiencing great levels of pain and discomfort, according to Morford, who says that many of the calls she responds to involve patients experiencing the worst mo -

ments of their lives.

“That’s my favorite part: being there with the patient, empathizing with their pain, calming their nerves, and hopefully making their day just a little bit better,” Morford said. The assumption that the program deals only with intoxicated patients on campus is not accurate, according to Taylor.

“We respond to a wide range of calls, from sprained ankles to seizures to cardiac arrests,” Taylor said.

There are challenges that EMTs face.

Patients are sometimes in situations where they are incapable of taking care of themselves.

“It can be nerve-racking having to take responsibility of a person other than yourself,” Morford said.

Moreover, attending to someone you personally know can be “emotionally taxing,” Taylor said, especially if it is a serious call. “It is important to keep the perspective that being a familiar face in such a stressful situation can be one of the best things for your patient,” she continued.

Being regular college students and being a part of this program means EMTs can have a busy schedules.

“College is about time management, and for me, Emory EMS is another component of that. We are students first, and multitasking is crucial,” Taylor said,

who is sometimes on shift during her classes, club meetings and when she’s doing homework.

According to Taylor, EMS taught her how to manage her time well, letting her remain as an active member in a multitude of Emory’s activities.

EMTs also work overnight shifts.

“While it may be interrupted, we are allowed to sleep in between calls during this shift, so on most nights, I get plenty of sleep,” Morford said.

To become an EMT, students have to go through a year of training that includes practical and written exams.

Both Taylor and Morford believe that the rewards of being an AEMT are more than worth the year of training and year of service.

“Being on Emory EMS has defined my college experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The experiences I’ve had, the patients I’ve encountered and the friends I’ve made are all irreplaceable,” Taylor said.

She added that the program taught her how to make a difference in a short amount of time by providing the right resources and making her patients smile.

“Every patient has a different problem and a different history, and it is interesting to listen to them,” Morford said, “It is one thing to sit in class and learn about what to do, and it is a completely different thing to be out in the field getting your hands dirty.”

Emory club explores global health issues

he Emory Undergraduate Global Health Organization (EUGHO) focuses on providing information and opportunities for students interested in international health issues.

The organization’s members discuss various global health issues and strive to enable students to form their own opinions. Some of the issues include maternal and child health, infectious diseases like Ebola and HIV/AIDS and nutrition.

EUGHO provides educational and volunteer opportunities and information on unique graduate opportunities in the field of global health.

“The organization has now started offering volunteer opportunities in Atlanta that serve as a microcosm for the world,” EUGHO Volunteer and Outreach Chair and College sophomore Rebecca LeBeaux said.

According to Lebeaux,

EUGHO is hoping to offer opportunities at food pantries, harm reduction shelters, health clinics and places promoting environmental stewardship.

Many of the twelve executive board members of EUGHO are pre-med and prepublic health students.

According to Lebeaux, while EUGHO may attract students primarily interested in health and medicine, anyone interested in learning more about global health issues is welcome to join.

EUGHO holds their general body meetings (GBMs) on the first Thursday of every month.

EUGHO brings in speakers from different departments of the University, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other organizations to talk at their GBMs.

They discussed how their research pertained to the Ebola epidemic.

Whether it is the organization’s well-rounded approach or breadth of student participation, many EUGHO members take pride in the impact and growth of the club.

he Emory swimming and diving teams dove into the season early against Division I Pennsylvania State University at the Woodruff Physical Education Center (WoodPEC) last weekend.

Penn State defeated both the men’s and women’s team184-107 and 184-115, respectively.

The men’s team collected a handful of individual wins, with juniors Christian Baker and Mitchell Cooper winning the 1,000 freestyle and the 400 IM. Baker clocked a time of 9:40.76 in freestyle, while Cooper came in fi rst place with a cut time of 4:06.08. Baker also fared well in the 500 freestyle, fi nishing with a time of 4:40.42 to claim a second place finish.

Cooper placed second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 backstroke.

Emory’s 400-freestyle relay team – freshmen Thomas Gordon, Zachary Chen and Trey Kolleck and sophomore Alexander Hardwick – placed first with a time of 3:09.11.

Despite the loss to Penn State, members of the swim team were excited to start the season off with a good meet. “[Racing Division I teams] makes you a better, more conscious swimmer,” junior Marcela SanchezAizcorbe said. “Even though our season is long, our enthusiasm is sustained all year.”

Other swimmers noted the early start to the season.

“It was great to see some of our toughest competition this early in the season,” junior Annelise Kowalsky said.

The women’s team won four events. Sophomore Cindy Cheng won the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.47 and sophomore Phoebe Edwards the 400 IM with 4:41.46.Freshman diver Emma Watson won the three-meter, six-dives event, scoring 258.90.

The 400-free relay of sophomore Julia Wawer, freshman Ava Salmi, and juniors Claire Liu and Marissa Bergh also claimed a victory with a time of 3:34.26.

Wawer placed fourth in the 200 freestyle with 1:52.86 and second in the 500 freestyle with 5:09.97.

Kowalsky placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.75.

Bergh and sophomore Mara Rosenstock also placed second in the 100 freestyle and the one-meter, sixdives event, respectively.

Third place finishes included Bergh in the 50 freestyle, Cheng in the 500 freestyle, senior Ellie Thompson in the 100 backstroke, freshman Ashley Daniels in the 100 breaststroke, senior Elizabeth Aronoff in the 200 breaststroke and freshman Meg Taylor in the 100 freestyle.

Both the men’s and women’s teams displayed strong freshmen potential, especially in relays.

“Regardless of the outcome, it was a big success because it allowed freshmen to have some early exposure to racing and got us in the right mindset for starting off the season,” Liu said. “We had a lot of good breakout swims which makes us excited for the rest of the reason, and I can’t wait to see how fast people go.”

Others also look forward to watching their younger teammates grow.

“The freshmen class is a strong and level-headed group,” Sanchez-Aizcorbe said. “There’ll definitely be some that will surprise us at the end of the season.”

In addition to the meet, Cooper and Cheng won University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming Athletes of the Week awards for the week ending Oct. 4.

The team will be back in the water for the Blue & Gold Intrasquad Meet this Friday on Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.

The women’s team will try to defend their national champion title for the eighth consecutive time this season. The men will try to beat their fourth overall showing last season.

Both teams will defend the UAA Championships for the 18th consecutive season.

That is, the metaphorical bubble, not this lonely website. So, your On Fire correspondent has found — and stripped down for your consumption — the most important recent events in sport.

1. THE FUTURE OF BOXING HBO has applied for a patent for new technology that would measure boxers’ punch velocity and impact, according to Digital Trends. Since the mid-1980s boxing has been scored using CompuBox, which is really just a computer program that allows judges to input the punches that they see boxers land. Think glorified Excel sheet.

The issue with CompuBox is that it leaves a lot open to human error. Wouldn’t we have all felt better about the technical defeat of Manny Pacquiao by the coward, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., had technology like this handled the scoring? Maybe not. But your On Fire correspondent, for one, would have enjoyed seeing Pacquiao’s few punches shown to have three times the force of Mayweather’s.

2. MLB REGULAR SEASON ENDS The Major League Baseball regular season has come to a close, and the playoffs will begin Tuesday with the Yankees hosting the Astros for the AL Wildcard Game. For the fi rst time in your On Fire correspondent’s lifetime, the NL Central Division is the strongest in baseball. The first-place Cardinals (100-62) are the best team in MLB, followed by the Pirates and the Cubs, the second and third best in the game respectively.

That means, however, that the second and third best teams in all of baseball will have to play a one-game Wildcard playoff. Pretty cool, yeah, but underscoring an undeniable flaw in the new Wild Card system.

At the risk of full disclosure, your On Fire correspondent is a sucker for underdogs and has been rooting for the Buccos all season; the Cub’s 11-8 record against them this season scares him (or her). Nonetheless, look forward to an exciting postseason and for a repeat of the 1960 World Series.

SIDEBAR: Your On Fire correspondent trekked to Turner Field for a Braves game the other day and, naturally, ordered a $10 Budweiser.

How could he (or she) not? It’s a logical syllogism: Baseball = America.

Budweiser = baseball. Therefore, Budweiser = America. Right? Wrong.

In 2008, Anheuser-Busch was bought by InBev, a Belgian-Brazilian conglomerate that also makes … wait for it … Stella Artois. Is your On Fire correspondent going to start drinking Yuengling at baseball games? Maybe. Is he (or she) getting upset about something as ridiculous as Donald Trump not flinching before putting it on a campaign hat? Absolutely. But hell, don’t lie to us, Budweiser.

While your On Fire correspondent is calling for action, AnheuserBusch is also an NFL sponsor. That must help with American sales. But who really is American, InBev? Is it the Native Americans from who this country was largely stolen?

I guess not, because you’ll take a stand against FIFA, but not against Danny Boy Snyder and the Washington professional football team.

To slightly modify a speech from the movie The Network, your On Fire correspondent sends this message to Coke and to his (or her) beer and Coke-drinking loyal readers: Your On Fire correspondent doesn’t have to tell you things are bad.

Everybody knows things are bad. All this mere correspondent knows is that firstly you’ve got to get mad. He (or she) wants you to get up right now and go to the window, open it and stick your head out and yell, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!”

Stephen Fowler (Executive Digital Editor) — At this point, Stephen has a foot out the door. He’s already let his imagination run wild about where he’ll end up. Nothing like a good reminder that you’ll be average and die! What I’d recommend — Oh, The Places You’ll Go! (1990).

Rupsha Basu (Executive Editor) — To say that Rupsha loves this book might be a major understatement. She basically lives by it already. She has taken it to the point where she actually has started chaining herself to the printers here at the Wheel while crying, “Paper is murder!” What I’d recommend — The Lorax (1971).

Zak Hudak (Managing Editor) — Hudak is proud and usually overconfident about things, ranging from making a squash court in a residential basement, to thinking he can win fi ghts in Fellini’s parking lot at 3 a.m. on a Wednesday. Hudak’s “I can do it all” attitude can get him into trouble, but we all know it’s just BS. What I’d recommend — I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today! And Other Stories (1969).

Dustin Slade (Editor-in-Chief) — To my dedicated readers it should be clear by now that Dustin hates fun, and enjoys ruining everyone else’s good time by saying things like, “No Netflix on production night!” or “No beer in the office!” He is sour, grumpy and basically has a heart two sizes too small. What I’d recommend — How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957).

Jacob Durst (Sports Editor) — All of his actions are aimed at one end: overcompensation. Most of the stories he tells didn’t actually happen, and the ones that did are vastly exaggerated and aimed at the approval of pretty much anything with a heartbeat. The story Durst once told as his own in an attempt to make his friends think he’s “keeeeewl” — Thee Cat in the Hat (1957).
