Blackletter, a script popular throughout western Europe from 1150 to the late 17th century, can come with a historical agenda. With the turn of a new millennium, designers at Underware decided it was time to breathe new life into this heavy handed font.

Fakir, a blackletter with a holy kiss, is a punchy, contemporary interpretation of these somewhat dated letterforms. It is not a revival, but an all new 21st century blackletter, with all the weight of the past and the fun of the future.

Flyting was a form of medieval ‘rap battle’ that became popular throughout Britain and Europe in the late 15th and early 16th century. One of the earliest and perhaps most memorable flyting battles was of that between poets William Dunbar and Walter Kennedy.

The outrageous insults and humorous boasting is akin to many of the rap battles that took place at the turn of the 21st century, many of which, interestingly, would have been advertised in traditional blackletter.

As Fakir is equipped to brazenly strike the balance between the past and the present, what better way for it to be put to use than to illustrate the marvelousely explicit flyting of these two medieval lords.
