2022 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the nations of Finland and Ireland.

In celebrating both Finnish and Irish identities and culture, I reflected upon what a national identity could actually look like. What is the identity of a country? Is it a flag, a song, a landmark, a food? In truth, it is all of these things, and infinitely more. It is personal to each individual. What defines a country is a million different things all at once, ever-changing elements that come together to form the nation of Finland or Ireland.

These elements, like pixels in a picture or DNA in our bodies, form the bigger image of our countries, and are thus integral in shaping our identities. Using these smaller, integral elements, I built a lexicon of icons that can be used to portray Finnish and Irish identity over the year. From the landscape to the language, anything that could be considered representational of ‘Irishness’ or ‘Finnishness’ can count as an icon, as identity is as interchangeable as the elements it’s made up from.

By integrating these Finnish and Irish icons, we can create new and interesting pictures, and also celebrate the pictures already created from integrating 60 years.

Logo

The logo is derived from the smaller ‘elements’ of each country’s identity, circles for Ireland and squares for Finland. Together they form the number 60, symbolising the 60 years of integration being celebrated. The logo is quite fluid as the nature of the elements is that they are in motion, therefore colours and pixels can change, however the original form is purely green circles and blue squares.

Integrating 60: Resident Artists Exhibition The sans serif Ballinger is used. Its ledgibility and wide variety of weight makes it perfect for undistracting captions and titles. It also alludes to the visual language of Finland, functional and geometric, while simultaneously being playful and sleek.

Larger headlines/ big text are in medium weight, while less important or smaller text is in light weight. This makes for good contrast and easier differentiation of hierarchy.

The role of the typeface in this visual language is to be minimal and to simply inform the viewer about the imagery (mainly symbols) Therefore type is kept quite small throughout the applications.

Colour

The Colour Scheme features a vibrant blue, representing Finland, and a vibrant green, representing Ireland. These add a pop of colour to the otherwise neutral tones of black, white and cream, which can be used to warm or lighten the tone of voice depending on the use of visual language. Black is used as a background colour only, and for motion or onscreen visuals. The cream background is used more widely for print, and it is alluded to in the material of the panels.

The green and white, used in the pixels/ panels mainly, can be used randomly to emphasise the theme of many elements integrating, or can be channelled for a purpose, such as signifying Ireland or Finland specifically. Green is only used in circles and blue only in squares.

Symbols Independent The symbols made up from the pixel elements, and the panels, are the heart of the visual identity. They represent key points of the identities of each country.

Symbols represnting Irish identity are made from circles, which can be green or white. Symbols representing Finland are made from squares, and can be blue or white. As independent identity symbols, they are typically white, with flashes of green or blue.

The independent symbols are effective static, as installations, or in motion, on screen, with flashes of colour moving.

Integrated

60 Years 60 Vuotta When the independent symbols integrate, the shapes merge into interlocking circles and squares, while the colour moves from mainly white to predominantly colour, indicating the vibrant relationship Ireland and Finland have together. An integrated symbol can be one of 2 things.

It is either an abstract symbol formed as a result of 2 independent symbols combining (best viewed as a motion piece to demonstrate integration) or as a new symbol representing the joint identities of Finland and Ireland (eg smiley face representing happiness and good relations). Once the pixels are integrated, they can be used to form any symbol that relates to the Integrating 60 brand, for example wayfinding signage for a related event or typography. The Brochure is to serve as a general overview of the 60 Year celebration and could be given out at amy of the events organised as part of the project. It would highlight briefly the historical relations between Ireland and Finland and the current projects and opportunities being organised today.

Promotional — Print

Posters and billboard signage can be divided into purely icon, for a more contemporary or digital event (or if no photos are available) or image, if photography is integral to the event or for a more cultured/ tourism based event. The main campaigns/straplines for promotion of the 60 years are ‘Integrating x’ and ‘What shapes our Identity’, both the core concepts of this identity.

Event

The case study event displayed here is an example of the theme of integration and identity of Ireland and Finland played through the lens of art and design; Integrating Art. This event is an exhibition bringing awareness to an international residence artist exchange program between Ireland and Finland, more specifically Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, and Helsinki International Art Programme.

The TBG+S/HIAP International Residency Exchange supports Irish artists and artists based in Ireland to spend three months in residency at HIAP - Helsinki International Artist Programme, in a live/work studio on the island of Suomenlinna in Helsinki.

The Exchange supports Finnish artists to live in Dublin and work from a studio at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios.

This set of guidelines is designed to be used for any events or branding directly for, or that may relate to, the anniversary celebrations.

Audience

The audience for this exhibition would predominantly be creatives, particularly those interested in working abroad. It would probably suit an age demographic of 18-40 year olds, those who are most willing to travel and work in a new environment and are perhaps looking for more experience. It would also be of interest to any members of the Finnish Irish community as it is a wonderful example of the 2 indentities integrating through art, and encourages conversation about Finnish and Irish relations.

It is also a great chance to network, as well as hear from some of the artists themselves, who will be giving talks in the theatre in the Lexicon throughout the course of the exhibition.

Exhibition Layout

The TBG+S/HIAP Resident Artists Exhibition is aimed at attracting creatives from Ireland, as well as any of the finnish community, to apply for the International Residency exchange program on offer to artists. It is also to be run as part of the Integrating 60 celebrations as a showcase of the best of Finnish and Irish art being produced today. It is to be held in the DLR Lexicon, and exhibits some of the previous resident artists work while on the exchange. It is predominantly a chance for creatives to network and to highlight the strong connections and unique aspects of Finnish and Irish art.

The Panels, either circular or square in form, transform the digital elements of the visual language into 3D models, continuing the theme of integration into a physical space.

The panels interlock with eachother to form a moduler system, capable of being taken apart and assembled into whatever form suits the clients purpose.

The panels can come in 5 different forms, depending on whether the client wants the gaps on display or not. The client can also choose how to use colour, whether it be randomly to emphasise the theme of endless elements integrating, or for a particular purpose to form a shape or to indicate something.

Information Board

The Exhibition set also includes larger boards the slot into the panels, to perform different purposes. Each board is a multple of the original square panel. There is the 3:2 ratio board, suitable for info stands, a square 2:2 board, for holding objects in exhibitions, a larger 3:4 board can that can function as a wall or divider, with the possibility of attaching a top board to it using the panels, and a bench at 1:4 ratio.

Materials & Motion Graphics

In keeping with Finland’s focus on and impressive implementation of sustainable solutions, the panels from which exhibitions can be assmbled/ disassembled are to be made out of a new, fully recyclable hard plastic alternative, Sulapac®, designed and produce by Helsinki natives. It biodegrades fully without leaving permanent microplastics behind. Sulapac® can be processed with existing plastic product machinery, and also looks sleek and contemporary. Its Barrier and Universal flex 35 materials are waterproof and more resistant for outdoor use. The Plastic could be dyed or painted over with the blue and green colour scheme to add vibrance to the earthy white tone. Any digital installations will be projected onto the hard plastic panels using projectors.

Motion graphics are used throughout the exhibition, for wayfinding, information and general promotion of the visual language. For any panels or boards with information on them (where projectors are available), motion graphics are used to both entice the viewer and reveal information at different levels. The pixel elements as the visual language extend the concept of integration and collaboration further by moving between each other and forming different shapes.

Signage

Signage is predominanty made up of built panel configurations, with some outdoor elements requiring painted or printed visuals as opposed to projected indoors. The client/event organiser can choose to configure the panels with the larger boards in whichever way best suits the space and the theme.

In Context

A draft model of the Municipal Gallery in the DLR Lexicon shows the possible uses for the panels, and how they could lead the viewer through a space. Fig. 1 shows the view from the entrance, with the first information stand introducing the viewer to the space. Fig. 2 shows an example of an artist display panel, while Fig. 3 shows a birdseye view of a possible installation using the panels, and shows how it could be used to hold objects or artwork.
