Dog Shows Open Palo Alto County Fair Activities

by Anesa McGregor The Palo Alto County Fair began Thursday, July 21 with the 4-H Dog Agility Show. White high temperatures tested both the dogs and their handlers, the program was completed successfully in both Agility and Obedience components.

Judge Larry Johnson of Ames spent time with the handlers before the Agility Show, giving them tips and suggestions to improve handling their animal. He also took time during the Agility Show to help the handlers in areas that they struggled and sharing ideas with the families, giving the exhibitors things to take home and

practice.

The Agility Show consisted of an obstacle course that the handlers and their dogs had to navigate in a u-shape consisting of climbs, jumps and tunnels.

Agility is broken into two groups: large dog and small dog. In the Large Dog Class, Kelli Klepper with “Roxie” earned Champion honors with Isabelle Ruppert and “Hunter” winning Reserve Champion honors.

For the small dogs, Maddi Hall and “Sassy” would receive the Champion honors, with Cassidy Welter and “Cy” being named Reserve Champions.

The exhibiters and their

dogs moved inside the Show Pavilion for the Obedience portion of the Show. Obedience is divided in three classes: Pre Novice A, Pre Novice B and Novice A. In addition, Showmanship for Junior and Senior exhibitors is also part of the show.

In the Pre Novice A class, Lauren Kenyon and “Chief” were named the Champions, with Reserve Champion honors going to Isabelle Ruppert and “Chloe.”

For Pre Novice B competition, Maddi Hall and “Sassy” earned the Championship, with Cassidy Welter and “Cy” earning the Reserve Champion honors.

Also competing in the Pre

Novice class were Ben Saxton and “Maggie”, who received a blue ribbon; Kayla Welter and “Trice”, who received a blue ribbon; Savannah Faulkner and “Meka”, who received a red ribbon and Noah Thorsbakken and “Herky”, who also received a red ribbon.

In the Novice Division, the Championship honors went to Morgan Hellyer and “Widgeon”, while Mackenzie Berkland and “Casey” earned the Reserve Championship honors.

Other Novice Division competitors included Isabelle Ruppert and “Hunter”, who received a blue ribbon and Kelli Klepper and “Roxie”, who also received a blue ribbon.

For the Showmanship competition, Lauren Kenyon and “Chief:” earned the Champion Senior Showmanship award, with Mackenzie Berkland and “Casey” receiving the Reserve Championship.

For Junior Showmanship, Cassidy Welter and “Cy” were named as the Champions, with Kayla Welter and “Trice” being named as the Reserve Champion Showmanship winners.

A LITTLE ENCOURAGEMENT – Ben Saxton’s one-year old Mastiff, Maggie, got a little encouragement to climb the seesaw, which is just one of the obstacles the dogs must complete during the agility show. Maggie had no problems with other obstacles and only needed a little nudge to get started.

Sorenson, Krieger Exhibit Top Market Beef Animals

by Dan Voigt A pair of young ladies from the Graettinger Pirates 4-H club captured the top honors of the 2016 Palo Alto County Fair Beef Show on Saturday, July 23. Kate Sorenson would accept the handshake of Beef Judge Willie Weis of Stacyville, signifying the selection of her 1,330 pound steer as the Supreme Grand Champion Market Beef animal of the fair.

After selecting Sorenson’s Market Steer as the top animal of the show, Weis then turned to the Grand Champion Market Heifer of Adrianna Krieger for his Supreme Reserve Champion of the show, which also became the Champion County-Raised animal as well. Reserve Champion County-Raised honors were presented to Emma Anderson of Emmetsburg for her 1,290 pound steer, the reserve champion of class two in the beef show.

In the Feeder Pen portion of the Beef Show, Maggie Nelson of the Palo Alto Shooting Sports Club would MAGGIE NELSON have her pen selected as the Champion Feeder Pen Grand Champions, while Mackenzie Berkland of the MACKENZIE Cantering 4-hers would earn BERKLAND the Reserve Champion honReserve Champion ors for her pen of feeder Feeder Pen calves.

Noah Gerber of the Fern Valley 4-Hers exhibited the Grand Champion Breeding Beef Heifer, which was also was named the County-Raised Heifer, while Adrianna Krieger exhibited the Reserve Champion Breeding Heifer.

For the Cow-Calf Division, Cassy Olesen of the Graettinger Pirates exhibited the Champion Cow-Calf pair, with Mitch Stevens of the Fern Valley 4-H’ers exhibiting the Reserve Champion. Noah Gerber then claimed the Supreme Breeding Beef Championship, with Adrianna Krieger exhibiting the Reserve Supreme Championship Breeding Beef honors.

A total of 22 animals were shown in the Market Beef Show, along with eight breeding heifers and two cow-calf pairs,as well as 11 Feeder Pens of calves.

Licht, Bergstrom Exhibit Champion Goat Entries

by Dan Voigt Kyle Licht of the 4-H Shooting Sports Club would exhibit the Grand Champion Market Goat of the 2015 Palo Alto County Fair Goat Show Friday, July 22. Austin Bergstrom, a member of the Emmetsburg FFA, would exhibit the Grand Champion Breeding Doe of the Goat show after judging by Andy VanAernam of Exira.

Lexi Brown of the Fern Valley 4-H’ers would earn the Reserve Champion Market Goat honors, with Madison Wickman of the Fern Valley 4-H’ers capturing the Reserve Champion honors for her Breeding Doe. The Market Meat Goat classes opened the show on Friday morning, starting with Lightweight Class One, ranging from 52 to 63 pounds. The class was won by Madison Wickman, with Jenna Joyce placing second. Also winning blue ribbons in the class were Jillian Joyce, Jenna Joyce with two more goats and Colton Wickman.

Lightweight Class Two featured animals ranging from 65 to 73 pounds. Earning first place in the class was the goat exhibited by Jillian Joyce, with second place going to Madison Wickman. Also earning blue ribbons were the goats shown by Jenna Joyce, Colton Wickman, Lexi Brown and Laney Montag.

In judging for the Lightweight Divisions, Judge VanAernam selected Jillian Joyce’s goat as the Division Champion and Madison Wickman’s goat as the Reserve Champion.

Moving to the Medium weight class, the animals tipped the scales from 74.5 to 83.5 pounds. Zane Wickman would exhibit the Division Champion, while Austin Bergstrom exhibited the Reserve Division Champion. Other goats earning blue ribbons in the class were exhibited by Zane Wickman, Jillian Joyce and Rebecca Licht.

The Heavy weight class, featuring goats weighing between 84 and 116 pounds, as Kyle Licht exhibited the champion animal, and Lexi Brown exhibited the Reserve Champion goat.

Also receiving blue ribbons for their animals in the class were Austin Bergstrom, Lexi Brown, Dexter Knobloch and Denver Knobloch.

Bringing the Divisional champions and Reserve champions back to the ring, VanAernam selected the 87-pound goat shown by Kyle Licht as his Grand Champion Market Goat, and then chose Lexi Brown’s 88.5-pound goat as the Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat.

The Breeding Doe Show opened with a class of Junior Does, under one year of age, born before January 15.

Champion honors went to the doe shown by Austin Bergstrom, with Zane Wickman showing the reserve champion. Also receiving a blue ribbon in the class was Lexi Brown.

The Junior Doe Class under one year of age, born after Jan. 15, featured five animals. The champion honors would be awarded to a doe shown by Madison Wickman, with Reserve honors going to Lexi Brown. Blue ribbons were also awarded to Jillian Joyce, Jenna Joyce and Dexter Knobloch.

In the Intermediate Doe class, for does over one and less than two years of age, Madison Wickman exhibited the Champion doe with Reserve honors going to Lexi Brown, with Colton Wickman and Austin Bergstrom also receiving blue ribbons for their doe entries.

The lone Senior Doe, over two years of age, was shown

by Austin Bergstrom, and received a blue ribbon.

Chapman, Kenyon Earn Top Honors At Dairy Show

by Dan Voigt Joe Chapman’s three-year old cow was chosen as the Overall Champion Dairy entry of the 2016 Palo Alto County Fair Dairy Show on Friday afternoon. Chapman, a member of the Highland Cruisers, earned a blue ribbon for his cow, which also earned the Champion Cow entry of the show and then had his cow selected as the Overall Champion Dairy entry of the show by Dairy Judge Dave Meddick of Cherokee.

In the Heifer classes, Rachel Chapman received a blue ribbon for her Intermediate calf, and Lauren Kenyon received a blue ribbon for her Senior Calf.

Moving into Dairy Showmanship, all four exhibitors came into the show ring to exhibit their skills in showing their animals and knowledge of the animals. In the

final deliberation by Judge Meddick, Rachel Chapman was named the Champion Junior Showman, with Joe Chapman earning the Intermediate Showmanship Championship and Lauren Kenyon earning the Champion Senior Showmanship honors, with Ryan Kenyon named the Reserve Champion Senior Showman to close out the Dairy Show.

Anderson Earns Supreme Championship Of Fair Swine Show

by Dan Voigt Young Jordan Anderson of the Independence Boosters 4H Club thought he had a good pig for the fair and his optimism was rewarded Friday morning at the 2016 Palo Alto County Fair Swine Show. Swine Judge Ben Schmaling of Prescott agreed with Anderson’s assessment of his market barrow, and selected the 277-pound medium heavy-weight barrow as both the Champion Market Barrow and the Supreme Grand Champion of the show, and then turned to the Reserve Champion medium heavy-weight barrow of Matthew Reding of the Independence Boosters, which was also the Reserve Grand Champion Market Barrow, as the Supreme Reserve Champion for the show.

Frank Reding would exhibit the Grand Champion Market Gilt, after it earned the Champion medium-weight honors, and Logan Studer of the Fern Valley 4-Hers would exhibit the Reserve Champion Market Gilt, which was the Reserve medium-weight gilt.

Mogler Earns Champion, Reserve Honors In Lamb Show

by Dan Voigt Levi Mogler picked up the double-dip at the 2016 Market Lamb Show of the Palo Alto County Fair on Thursday, as he exhibited both the Champion and Reserve Champion Market Lambs of the show. Judge Evan McCleary selected Mogler’s Lightweight Champion as the Overall Champion and the Reserve Champion lightweight lamb for the Overall Reserve Champion of the show.

Megan Brown of the Fern Valley 4-H’ers would exhibit the Champion Breeding Ewe of the show. In the Pen of Three lambs competition, Levi Mogler’s pen of lambs was selected as the Champion Pen of Three Market Lambs, while Megan Brown’s pen was selected as the Reserve Champion Pen. A total of 11 animals were shown in the Market Show, along with one breeding ewe and three Pens of Three lambs.

Rabbits Had Another Good Year At The Fair

by Anesa McGregor It was another good showing of rabbits at the Palo Alto County Fair this year, with the rabbits being shown on Saturday.

In the Commercial Doe classes, Riley Corderman was the only exhibitor, and received the Championship for his Junior Doe and Reserve for his Senior Doe. In the Junior Commercial Buck class, Riley Corderman received a red ribbon and in the Senior Buck class, Noah Thorsbakken received the Championship, with Riley Corderman receiving Reserve honors.

Morgan Hellyer received a red ribbon for her buck.

In the Fancy Rabbit Class, judging started with the Junior Does. First place went to Abby Gehrt with Kayla Welter earning second place. Also receiving blue ribbons were Abby Gehrt for two more rabbits, Landon Haack for two rabbits and Emmy Schneider for two rabbits.

In the Senior Doe class, Kayla Welter exhibited the top rabbit and Landon Haack’s rabbit placed second. Abby Gehrt received a blue ribbon and a red ribbon for her does, while Noah Thorsbakken earned a blue ribbon and Kayla Welter received two blue ribbons for two rabbits.

Judge Rohlk then selected

Kayla Welter’s Mini-Rex Champion Senior Doe as the Champion Fancy Doe and Landon Haack’s Mini Lop Reserve Champion Senior Doe for the Reserve Champion Fancy Doe. Moving to the Fancy Bucks, the Junior Buck class was won by Abby Gehrt, with Landon Haack showing the Reserve Champion. Blue ribbons were also presented to Noah Thorsbakken, and Abby Gehrt.

In the Senior Bucks, the Champion rabbit was shown by Miriam Hackbart-Morlock and the Reserve Championi show by Cassidy Welter. Also receiving blue ribbons in the class were Abby Gehrt for three rabbits, Cassidy Welter for three rabbits and Landon Haack.

For the Fancy Buck Championship, Miriam H a c k b a r t - M o r l o c k ’s French-English Angora Cross Senior Buck was named the Champion, with the Mini-Rex of Abby Gehrt from the Junior Buck class selected as the Reserve Champion Fancy Buck.

In the 4-H Rabbit Showmanship class, Kayla Welter was named the Showmanship Champion.

Poultry Show Returns To The Palo Alto County Fair

by dan Voigt After a one-year absence due to the avian flu outbreak in 2015, Poultry exhibits returned to the Palo Alto County Fair on Thursday, July 21. When Poultry Judge Dennis Thompson of Boone completed his evaluations, the Back Australorp of Dexter Knobloch was selected as the Grand Champion Poultry entry, while Rachel Miner’s Black Frizzle Hen was named the Reserve Champion Poultry entry of the show.

Judging began with the Commercial Poultry Broiler class, with Mackenzie Berkland earning a blue ribbon for her pen of two broilers six to eight weeks of age. Mackenzie Berkland then received a blue ribbon for her pen of Gold Star Laying Hens, hatched last year.

In the Pullets class hatched this year, Dexter Knobloch’s Black Australorp was selected as theChampion bird, with Denver Knobloch’s Rhode Island Reds being selected as the Reserve Champion. Also receiving blue ribbons were Andrew Hohensee for a pen of Black Langshams, a blue for a pen of Americanas, a blue for a pen of Americana Cross birds and blue ribbons for two pens of Black Sex Link chickens. Shane Moran exhibited a Silver Lace Wyandotte and a Red Sex Link chicken as a Cloverkid and received participation ribbons. Dexter Knobloch’s Black Australorp was named the Commercial Champion and Denver Knobloch’s Rhode Island Reds were named the Reserve Champions.

In the Breeding Bird class, Cock Birds, one year or older, saw Rachel Miner receive a blue ribbon and Henry Miner received a participation ribbon.

The Cockeral Class, for male chickens less than a year old, saw Mackenzie Berkland earn a blue ribbon for her Dominique, while Matt Berkland received blue ribbons for his Golden Penciled Hamburg, Blue Cochin and Black Cochin and Denver Knobloch received a blue ribbon for his Production Red. In the Hen Class for females one year or older, Matt Berkland received a blue ribbon for his Silver Spangled Hamburg, while Savannah Faulkner received blue ribbons for her Back Star hen and an Americana hen, along with two red ribbons for two Black Star hens. Ava Faulkner would receive participation ribbons as a Cloverkid, exhibit-

ing a Plymouth Rock and Rhode Island Red hen.

For the Pullet Class of female birds less than a year old, Mackenzie Berkland received blue ribbons for her Golden Penciled Hamburg, a White Capped Black Polish, a Black Cochin, a Blue Cochin and a Partridge Cochin. Matt Berkland received blue ribbons for his Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock, Buff Cochin, White Capped Black Polish, Partridge Cochin, Langshan and Black Cochin and Andrew Hohensee earned blue ribbons for two pens of seven hens.

To close out the class, Judge Thompson selected Matt Berkland’s Silver Spangled Hamburg as the Champion Large Fowl, while Mackenzie Berkland’s Black Cochin was selected as the Reserve Champion Large Fowl.

The Bantam class for Cock Birds one year and older featured two Cloverkid exhibitors. Henry Miner and Shane Moran both received Participation ribbons for their entries in the class.

Rachel Miner would exhibit the lone Cockeral male less than one year of age, and received a blue ribbon for the entry.

For the Hen class of females a year or older, Rachel Miner earned first place for her Black Frizzle Cochin entry, and received blue ribbons for her White Frizzle Cochin and Silkie. Mackenzie Berkland received a red ribbon for her White Cochin, while Henry Miller exhibited a Frizzle Cochin and Shane Moran exhibited a Silkie, both as Cloverkids, and received participation ribbons.

For the Bantam Class, Rachel Miner’s Brown/Red Frizzle Cochin was selected as the Champion and her White Frizzle Cochin earned Reserve honors.

With three Ducks and Geese entries, Rachel Miner’s Male Crested Duck was selected as the Champion of the class, and her Female Crested Duck was named the Reserve Champion. Henry Miner exhibited a Crested Duck and received a participation ribbon.

With the preliminary judging completed.

Judge Thompson brought all of the class champions back for a final look, and selected the Black Australorp of Dexter Knobloch as the Grand Champion Poultry entry and Rachel Miner’s Black Frizzle

by dan Voigt For the second consecutive year, the Palo Alto County Fair is excited to announce the winners of the Palo Alto County Fair Scholarship Program. Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, two outstanding high school seniors who have actively participated in the Palo Alto County Fair will be recognized and presented with scholarships of $500 each.

To be eligible for the Palo Alto County Fair Scholarship, the youth must be a high school senior who graduated with the most recent graduating class. They must also have actively participated in the Palo Alto County Fair, past or present and they must plan to enroll in any accredited twoyear or four-year college or university.

A selection committee considered the following the following criteria for selection when reviewing the applications: Exhibits, performances and participation at the Palo Alto County Fair; an essay explaining the impact the Palo Alto County Fair has had on their lives; Extracurricular and community activities, community service and volunteerism; a paragraph explaining their favorite fair memory or event and a paragraph explaining their future plans.

Winners of the two Palo Alto County Fair Scholarships for 2016 are Rachel Hoffman and Kelli Klepper.

2016 Non-Livestock Fair Entries & Judging Results

Pre-Fair judging for all exhibits was held Tuesday, July 19, in the 4-H Exhibits Building. A group of judges from surrounding counties were on hand to evaluate the work of the Palo Alto County 4-Hers.

Awards were presented to each project including those Considered for State Fair (CSF) and those Considered for Junior Recognition CJr.R).

FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES The Family and Consumer Science category includes child development, clothing and fashion, consumer management, food & nutrition, health, home improvement and sewing and needle arts.

BEFORE THE SHOW -- There was plenty of hustle and bustle getting ready for the 4-H and FFA Horse Show on Saturday morning. All eyes were on the horses as everyone stayed inside the barn and out of the rain.
