Capital 6 has gone from strength to strength with increasing numbers, improving results and more students progressing to higher education including Russell Group universities. A broad choice of courses and facilities are available at our academy and through our consortium arrangement, and we provide support, advice and guidance to create a positive and successful experience for all our students.

SBC6 provides an exciting and unique collaborative partnership between the secondary schools in South Brent: Capital City Academy, Convent of Jesus and Mary, Crest Academy, Newman Catholic College and Queens Park Community School that will enable 6th Form students across South Brent to select from the widest possible range of courses available for this September.

Students at all schools in the partnership are invited to join in with special events that will take place throughout the year and can take advantage of the wide and varied range of extra-curricular opportunities that the Consortium can offer on Wednesday afternoons including community projects, lecture programmes, work based skills, sport or the arts. This will create a collegiate-style educational experience helping to prepare students for higher education.

The consortium will also be offering a bespoke Oxbridge / Medicine preparation programme where the very top students from each of the schools will meet to challenge, prepare and support each other as they apply for these highly competitive places.

Students will remain on roll at their ‘home’ school and it is anticipated that they will study either all or at least two courses there.

Sometimes students have a particular programme of course combinations they wish or need to study but not every school can offer every combination and often timetable constraints mean that there are clashes of subjects. This is where the partnership offer becomes so important. Each school offers a selection of courses and specialises in particular areas. Students are then able to view the full offer and if it is not possible to take a subject at their ‘home’ school, they will be warmly welcomed to one of the partner schools to study it there.

To support those students travelling between schools our timetable for 6th Form courses is common to all schools so that 6th Form courses are taught in either morning or afternoon extended sessions. This will give students the widest possible choice of courses.

Whilst studying at a partner school it is expected that students will embrace the culture of that school and respect the routines and customs of that school, always being welcomed to join in with events or opportunities provided by the partner schools.

A Wide and Varied Curriculum

In Capital 6, students can choose from a range of study programmes, at our site or through our consortium arrangement. Prior to starting post-16 courses, a rigorous application and admissions process guides students onto the most appropriate pathway. Study programmes are designed to ensure progression routes to high-quality higher education, training or employment upon leaving sixth form; as well as providing a wide and varied curriculum that can consist of academic, vocational or a mixed study programme tailored to individual aspirations.

‘ASPIRATION’

The first year in a 3 year programme focused around Level 2 qualifications e.g. BTEC Business.

Includes GCSE Mathematics, GCSE English Language, and Work Experience.

Aiming for employment or progression to a Level 3 Applied General pathway.

Any student yet to achieve a Level 2 pass in GCSE English and maths attends classes to re-sit these qualifications at the earliest opportunity. For students who are not yet ready for level 3, an introduction to level 3 pathway allows students to gain a technical certificate qualification, alongside a structured programme of work experience. To support the taught curriculum, study programmes also contain non-qualification activities designed to prepare students for the next stage of their education. These include supervised independent study, a tailored UCAS and careers & employability programme, and range of extra-curricular activities. Within this, the Academy provides impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance.

Capital Asset

The Capital Asset programme is provided by Capital 6 for our most able students. The aim of the programme is to best equip the students for progression to the prestigious ‘Russell Group’ universities. Students are also provided with opportunities to gain industry experience at a variety of placements with well-known companies that have already established relationships with the academy.

Students are encouraged to aspire to competitive courses and are supported in their applications to popular widening access programmes such as summer schools and mentoring schemes.

Students receive an offer for the Capital Asset based upon their attainment and their forecast grades.

Each school will offer a different programme and students can select from any of these programmes on a termly basis giving the widest possible choice. For example students may want to follow a competitive sports programme for the first term at Capital and then take part in a volunteering programme based at Newman for the second semester. This range of extra-curricular opportunities is unique to the consortium and will allow all Capital 6 students the chance to build their CV in a bespoke fashion to strengthen their university or employment application. This will also create a collegiate-style educational experience helping to prepare students for higher education.

Capital also runs its own clubs and classes programme offering a wide range of opportunities from academic booster classes, to sports, arts & leadership. There are community clubs on site such as Basketball, Table Tennis, Fitness, Gymnastics, Athletics and Trampolining. We also offer some offsite opportunities in partnership with local clubs which are free for Capital City Academy students.

Within the programme Capital also hosts primary sports night every Monday whereby our students and leaders run a variety of sports activities for local primary schools. Our 6th form leadership academy offers students access to additional qualifications such as coaching level 1, officiating, first aid and child protection. We currently employ a number of our 6th form students as coaches, leaders and sports officials. There are also extensive opportunities for students to extend their academic studies through coursework clinics, booster classes, quiet study, educational visits, work experience placements and university lectures.

My son has been really helped by the table tennis programme. It has given him confidence and self-esteem that he is now using in other areas such as becoming a volunteer Reading Buddy with Year 7 students.

Enrichment

The SBC6 consortium offers a full enrichment programme on Wednesday afternoons including community projects, lecture programmes, work based skills, sport or the arts.

Year 12 parent

All students are attached to a Learning Adviser (LA) group that meets every day. The Learning Adviser is responsible for monitoring students’ overall progress through weekly 1-1 sessions and target setting days. LAs are the first point of contact for parents/ carers, and each sixth form year has a Lead Teacher, similar in the pastoral role to a Head of Year, who oversees attendance, progress and achievement.

We have a KS5 Student Support Officer who is responsible for supporting students with their studies, as well as managing the needs of students who face challenging circumstances or other barriers to learning. We work closely with the Psychology Service should our students need further support during their sixth form studies and our Capital 6 Co-ordinator also oversees careers education for the sixth form; working alongside our impartial Careers Advisor. Each student has a personalised schedule of careers guidance to help them make the decisions about their next steps after Capital 6.

Sports and Arts Aptitude Places We offer ‘Aptitude Places’ for students demonstrating an aptitude for Sport or the Arts – this can include sponsorship for students demonstrating exceptional talent.

Students that compete and train at County and National level are fully supported by Capital City Academy through our Elite Athlete Education Programme. The Director of Sport meets regularly with each athlete to review progress and agree how the school can best support them. This may be through release time from school, assistance with travel and training expenses, use of a school chromebook or additional fitness training with personal trainers. Athletes are recognised for their commitment and ability to balance academic studies and sporting ambitions.

We can also offer support to artists showing exceptional talent.

These students would meet regularly with the Director of Arts and through our well connected Trustees be linked in with a professional artist in their field.

Student support, guidance and wellbeing

Capital 6 has a comprehensive network of support available to students as they progress; there is always someone to help.

There is a real culture of listening at Capital.

Work Experience Work experience is an essential part of all study programmes.

It gives students an insight into working life, and provides skills and experiences that are fundamental to any progression route. Capital 6 has close links with local organisations. On our Level 3 Induction one year programme, students have two placements; one day per week over the course of the year in the local area. Placements range from nursing homes to schools and other businesses. Students on Level 3 study programmes have a dedicated time period within year 12 to compete a substantial two week placement. These experiences provide an insight into the career routes that will hopefully support our students in their aspirations.

Extended Project Qualification The EPQ allows each student to embark on a largely selfdirected and self-motivated project. Students must choose a topic, plan, research and develop their idea, and decide on their finished product. A project topic may be directly related to a student’s study programme, but should look beyond the specification. A finished product may take the form of:

The Duke of Edinburgh Award The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is an achievement award for any young person aged 14-24. A programme of activities develops the mind, body and soul in an environment of social interaction, team working and physical challenge (an expedition).

Students at Capital 6 have the opportunity to either begin the programme in Year 12 or to continue with their progress with the DofE during their time at Sixth Form.

The Challenge Students who did not access The Challenge in Year 11 are given another opportunity to attend Sixth Form Autumn challenge.

The challenge is perfect for boosting CV experience, personal statements, and UCAS forms. It’s also an unforgettable experience which builds confidence and independence. The programme is a government-funded initiative that brings together schools, community organisations, businesses and individuals to build a stronger and more cohesive society. It never costs more than £50.

Twenty of our current Capital 6 students completed the challenge in October half term for total cost of £20 each.

Part 1 – Get Active Develop confidence and bond with team mates on an action-packed residential.

Part 2 – Get Involved Team mates work together to learn a new skill in sport, media, photography, music, drama, enterprise or art.

Part 3 – Make Your Mark Teams design and run a project in the local area.

CASE STUDY: SAATCHI & SAATCHI As part of their work experience, four of our students were able to undertake a week’s placement at Saatchi & Saatchi, where they collaborated on a marketing strategy for a major account holder culminating with a presentation to industry professionals and our Chair of Governors - Garth Crooks OBE.

The EPQ is awarded a grade that is equivalent in size to an ‘AS’ Level and also accrues UCAS points

Day to Day Duties: Hoddan secured two weeks at a London hospital, and was visited during her placement by the careers team. She shadowed people with different professions across the hospital, the majority of her placement was within paediatrics.

Amazing, insightful and fascinating. This placement helped me make a definitive decision of wanting to working solely in paediatrics.

Wider Learning

At Capital 6 we believe that learning transcends the boundaries of the classroom environment.

Although we are proud of our curriculum and the academic success of our students, there is more to Capital 6 life than exams. We believe in the all-round development of our students, the realisation of their potential and preparation for life beyond school.

Leadership

We actively encourage our senior students to contribute to the wider life of the school, thereby opening their minds to new levels of responsibility and participation. Students can undertake duties on a rota basis and are all part of our flagship committee attending school events such as Open and Parent Evenings. They play a major role in organising our social and fundraising events. Capital 6 students are a tremendous help to the school and play a very important part in the life at the Academy. They take pride in being role models for the younger students.

Student Council The positions of Head Boy, Head Girl, their deputies and house captains are positions of responsibilities and ones that provide an important connection between students and staff.

At Capital 6 students are given the opportunity to make a real difference and be an active member of the school community by participating in Student Parliament.

Students of the Year This award is given each year to two students graduating from Year 13. The award consists of an inscribed glass trophy and a cash prize. It is given to students who have shown outstanding commitment and achievement academically and also have contributed to Capital City Academy and the wider community.

STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER: JEMICA TAYLOR Our school is a large community and helping lead that provides a sense of belonging to something bigger. This school has helped me grow from being a timid Year 7 to now having the ability to voice my - alongside others’ - opinions in front of both staff and students, and has given me confidence I never thought I’d have. It is through coming here and meeting a diverse community that I have become who I am today, with the support of the helpful team here at Capital 6.

Jemica achieved 3As at A Level and is now studying History at Queen Mary University.

Literacy and Numeracy Leaders Students are given the opportunity to assist both their peers and younger students in their literacy and numeracy learning.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their leadership and communication skills. Literacy and numeracy leaders have a crucial role in developing the skills for younger students and can use this experiences as valuable enhancements for their personal statements

Orange Jacket and Active Play Scheme Students within Capital 6 are given a unique opportunity to apply for a leadership position within our ‘Active Play’, ‘Orange Jacket’ and ‘Catering Leaders’ programmes. Students in the scheme take on a variety of leadership roles including: supervision; providing sports equipment for students; running active play and assisting with Primary Night. The Catering Leaders’ duties cover serving meals, supervising lunch time and operating the tills. They are also involved in assisting at other school events including the annual staff Christmas dinner.

Leadership Academy Capital City Academy runs a very successful Leadership Programme with its roots and drive being the sports leadership programme. Students take part in the programme through core PE lessons, GCSE, BTEC and A-level courses together with volunteering within the school and local community through the clubs and classes programme. Our volunteers are regularly in the top 3 schools in the UK for hours accumulated volunteering through the Step into Sport programme. Students are given opportunities to obtain qualifications and awards such as Sports Leaders Awards Level 1& 2, coaching and refereeing certification. Our Sports leaders have taken part in the Olympics and Paralympics, some of which were games makers and volunteers. The primary sports night within the clubs and classes programme provides students with an opportunity to volunteer and develop skills such as communication, team work and organisation. There are also opportunities for sports leaders’ to run their own sports clubs at lunch and after school. All of our leaders are rewarded with sports leaders’ clothing, rewards trip and celebration evenings.

LEADERSHIP ROLE: LEAD ORANGE JACKET I enjoy my leadership role as I love being a part of the Capital City Academy community and having the opportunity to leave a memory of yourself here, and also to help others. I take a lead in training the younger year 10 and year 11 Orange Jackets, and I’ve recently been given extra responsibilities. My role gives my new employability skills, and I’m always learning how to develop these. I would recommend any year 12 joining us to apply for one of these roles, there are many to choose from.

2018 YOUTH SPORTS TRUST BECKWITH AWARD WINNER: FATIMA HUSEIN Capital City Academy has amazing sports facilities and this enables me to pursue my ambitions for a career in sports. I’ve had the opportunity to develop the independence I need to be successful in the outside world – I’ve been able to lead others, both my fellow students, and those in the younger year groups too. I am supported in my lessons by my teachers, who help me understand my learning and they make every lesson an enjoyable one. I would recommend Capital 6 for every student who wants to be on a better path to their dreams.

Timeline of Key Dates Thursday 22nd November 2018 at 5.30 - 7.30pm Capital 6 Open Evening - this will give you the opportunity to visit the Academy, learn more about sixth form life, meet the team and receive more information on what we offer.

Friday 23rd November 2018 Online applications open for September 2019. Please apply through the website.

Tuesday 18th December 2018 Closing date for applications - the online application form should be submitted along with a reference.

Saturday 2nd February 2019 Admissions meeting - after receiving your application, you will be sent a letter confirming the time of your admissions meeting.

Week commencing 25th February 2019 After attending your admissions meeting, an offer letter will be sent to you confirming a conditional place.

Friday 15th March 2019 Deadline for accepting your conditional place - after receiving your offer letter you are required to respond in writing.

Monday 1st July 2019 Year 11 into 12 Induction Day. This is a compulsory induction day that gives you a taster of sixth form life, introduces you to your subjects and prepares you thoroughly for the two years ahead. It is very important to avoid this date when booking post exam work experience, holidays or NCS. Information will also be given out about enrolment times, priorities and key dates for academic year 2019-20.

Thursday 22nd August 2019 Capital 6 Enrolment Day. Once you have collected your GCSE results you are required to attend enrolment in order to confirm or change (if necessary) your subjects. Priority for course changes will be given to students who attended Induction Day.

September 2019 Sixth form teaching begins.
