Letter From The Historian To My Incredible TSJCL Community, Wow! This year has been crazy in the best and worst possible ways.

When I was appointed as your Historian, I was ecstatic. As the year went on, I helped lead you all at Nationals, attended board meetings, edited rules, bonded with other officers, and, most importantly, took lots of photos! Being your Historian has been a truly amazing opportunity and the capstone of my Junior year. When State Convention had to be canceled due to COVID-19, the entire board was devastated by this let down. However, even though I did not see you all at Clear Falls, I knew there was still a huge community that I could rely on and that I care about so much. I hope the TSJCL knows how much it has meant to me throughout high school. I hope I have adequately expressed my love for this organization by creating this scrapbook.

When picking out a theme for the scrapbook, I wanted to showcase Texas’ motto (translated into Latin): Amicitia. A constellation is a group of stars that comes together to create a dazzling spectacle. Each TSJCLer, shining on their own, comes together to create our very own Friendship constellation. When Texas’ Classics students come together, they form something magical, fierce, and passionate, reflected in the purple motif. Thank you Texas for an amazing year which has been captured in the following pages.

NJCL: Day 1

Musca: The Fly The Musca Constellation is found in the southern sky. It was originally known by ‘apis’ or the bee for two centuries until it was renamed ‘musca’ by the Dutch astronomer Willem Blaeu in 1602. The 2019 NJCL Convention theme, apes non sunt solitaria natura, represents the tight-knit JCL community. Where there’s one passionate classics student, there are a hundred more there to support them. Although the Texas delegation is not a small bee or fly, every TSJCL star stands with our constellation.

NJCL: Day 2

Planet of the apes; Texas’ spirit at GA is always out of this world!!

Texas’ officers bond Escape Room. They better by strategically room through locks,

over the Pandora’s Box got to know each other breaking out of a classriddles, and teamwork.

Argo Navis: The Argo The Argo tells the story of the hero Jason and his crew who go on a journey to find the Golden Fleece, a magical prize. The French Astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille categorized the constellation carina, puppis, and vela, Latin for keel, stern, and sails respectively. This constellation includes the second brightest star in the nightsky: canopus. Just like the Argonauts and the Argo Navis, the NJCL delegates work together to keep each other afloat. After having journeyed to Fargo, ND, Texans found the Golden Fleece, camaraderie, hidden in their hours sitting in the FargoDome and laughing at jokes about Augustus.

Lyra: The Lyre The constellation Lyra was first catalogued in the Second Century CE by Ptolemy and contains Vega, the fifth brightest star in the nightsky. This Lyre in our nightsky is associated with Orpheus, the Muse Calliope’s son and harpist of the Argonauts. Orpheus’ golden lyre was gifted to him by the god Apollo and was placed in the sky by Zeus and the Muses. Orpheus and his lyre were famous in the Roman world for their beautiful, life-changing music, but one without the other would not be the same. Similarly, the Classics and the TSJCL go hand in hand. The great poets, orators, artists, etc. would not be as well-known without students to appreciate them, and the TSJCL would be lost without their guidance and wisdom.

1. The Texas Delegation synchronously claps and cheers.

2. During the Voting Fellowship, students voice opinions.

3. Delegates vote for next year’s national officers.

Day in Old Rome - It’s Poseidon’s World; Journey to the ocean floor

Texas’ Advanced Certamen Team won 1st place after a year of hard work! The players (R-L) were Teddy, Jared, Tim, Domenic, and Arham. The Novice Team came in 6th, and the Intermediate Team came in 3rd!

1. Delegates carry the TSJCL signs and lead the Texas section of the procession.

2. Students hold the TEXAS signs and prep for the walk.

3. Students help their friend position their toga while holding their scuba and ocean themed signs for spirit.

4. Sponsors and teachers sport their own togas and stolas with their students.

5. Some delegates brought props to aid their costume during the spirit walk.

Pyxis: The Compass The constellation Pyxis represents the navigator’s magnetic compass and was created c. 1751. Pyxis lies in the Southern Sky near the Argo Navis, but is not officially a part of this constellation. A ship’s compass guides its sailors on their journeys. For many students, the JCL acts as a compass during their secondary education. With caring, dedicated teachers and lasting, steadfast friendships, the TSJCL strives to be a compass for students searching for a lifelong community.

Troy Schouten

President 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

My favorite part of being president was the board meetings. I got to see my fellow officers and flesh out the work we had done the rest of the year as we prepped for state.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

I would want to live under Titus so I could be part of the crowd at the opening of the Colosseum.

Lorelei Ing

1st Vice President 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

I get to oversee and help run DI and Sight recitation at state and pick out the trophies which gives me a bit of creative freedom when picking out design elements.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

Probably Marcus Aurelius because he seems like a really cool dude. He was a stoic philosopher and wrote a book called Meditations, so I’d want to engage in conversation with him and he’d probably offer some great advice.

Devansh Dalal

2nd Vice President 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

The pin because it’s so shiny. I am a magpie.

2. What has being part of the TSJCL taught you?

Austin has the best food... way better than Dallas.

3. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

Pupienus. He has a cool name. I’m pretty sure he was an emperor. I know nothing about history.

Katiana Soenen

Secretary 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

I loved contacting colloquia speakers and talking to people who accomplished amazing things in the classics field!

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

Probably Vespasian because his rule was relatively stable, and it would be neat to see the beginning of many great architectural endeavors, e.g. the Colosseum, begin in Rome.

Merissa Hall

Treasurer 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

The meetings; it’s fun to get to see everyone every once in a while, and to participate in the discussions that we have during the meetings. Being part of the TSJCL has taught me that friends can be made anywhere (even in the middle of North Dakota).

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

I would choose emperor Nero, because I would like to see the famous Nero himself fiddling while Rome is burning.

Kagan Baker

Outreach Coordinator 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

I loved meeting new people at nationals. Everyone was from different areas, with different goals and aspirations, and I wouldn’t have met so many people if I wasn’t OutCo. 2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

Marcus Aurelius. He might not have had the calmest reign but he was great at adapting under pressure and was before his time in philosophy and free speech.

Emma Schmidt

Historian 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

I really like talking to new people and meeting Texans from all over. I had so much fun documenting this year, from board meetings to Nationals.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

I’d choose Claudius, mostly because he celebrated Rome’s 800th birthday and exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Urvi Alamela

Parliamentarian 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

My favorite part was writing the Constitutional Amendments and holding virtual elections. I love ‘formal’ writing, so writing the rationales were quite exciting.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

Marcus Aurelius. I would want to be working in law (even though I am a woman), and he often delegated his work to his disciples. Overall, he was a very kind man that felt for the poor and sick, and tried to be as fair as possible.

Monique Hoarau Editor 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

I loved creating The Torch and being able to provide TSJCLers with information and fun tidbits of the TSJCL. 2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

Hadrian’s because I love all the work he did to strengthen and advance the empire, starting with all of his amazing builds.

Area A Co-Chair 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

My favorite part of office was actually hosting Area A Convention because it was nice to see all of our hard work come to fruition.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

I’d choose Septimius Severus because he seems like a benevolent leader and I adore him and Julia Domna.

Lan Nguyen

Area A Co-Chair 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

All of the learning opportunities. Communicating with many people let me practice composing professional emails, maintaining awkward phone calls, and more. Also, convention day did not go exactly as planned, so my problem solving, organization, and sprinting skills were tested.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

In the time of Nero, both a great fire and a plague swept through Rome. That sounds like fun to me, so I’d like to be there for a good time not a long time under Nero.

Thelo Lewis Area B Chair 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

I loved helping students meet with friends and make new memories. Conventions have always been highlights of my years, and it was rewarding to see behind the scenes.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

Caligula. First of all, I want to call him “little booties” to his face, but I would also love to meet Incitatus.

Jessica Liu Area D Chair 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

The amount of wonderful people I’ve been able to meet is a cherished part of my memory.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

Publius Aelius Hadrianus because not only was his reign mostly peaceful, I could also experience the Pantheon being rebuilt.

Shivani Lam Area F Co-Chair 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

My favorite part was planning and hosting the Area F Convention because it was the same convention that had sparked in me a passion for classical antiquity five years ago, so it was meaningful for me to host it at my school as a senior.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

The reign of Titus so I could witness the opening of the Colosseum and the elaborate inaugural games from that time.

Alivia Mayfield Convention Co-Coordinator 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

My favorite part of my office is being able to have a direct hand in making State a fun and memorable experience.

2. If you could travel back in time and live under a Roman emperor’s reign, which emperor would you choose and why?

As unoriginal as it sounds, I would live under Augustus’ reign. It would’ve been amazing to see how Rome was reacting to the switch from Republic to Empire in the flesh.

Carter Wiese Area F Co-Chair 1. What is your favorite part of your office?

My favorite part of my office is knowing that I make a difference in the community around me.

2. What has being part of TSJCL taught you?

Being part of the JCL has taught me that smaller organizations are more tightly knit together. Being able to compete against the same Certamen groups and see the same officers between years has been lots of fun for me.

Board Meetings

Officers get together to plan the year and more.

At the Spring Board Meeting, outgoing officers meet with their corresponding incoming officers to advise about what they should expect. National spirit plans for t-shirt designs and props for each of the days are made. The 2019 SBM was at Highland Park HS.

Libra: The Balance Libra, one of the zodiac signs, was first catalogued by Ptolemy in the Second Century CE and means “weighing scales” in Latin. The Romans associated the constellation with balanced seasons and honored this constellation because the moon was located in Libra when Rome was founded. The Babylonians called Libra the “balance of heaven” as well. Our officers act as the balance of the TSJCL. Year after year we elect officers to keep our organization balanced and well-run. We heavily rely on our student leaders to organize our conventions and events.

At the Fall Board Meeting, the officers discuss contest rule changes and have a chance to bond together. They follow up from Nationals and start preparing for State. The 2019 FBM was at Westlake HS.

At the Winter Board Meeting, the officers finalize preparations and review expectations for the State Convention. They take a tour of State’s host school: Clear Falls HS. 27

Rome’s Virtual Birthday

The Texas delegation came together via webinar instead of State.

Officer Bake-Off

Our celebration included the results from the prejudged contests, the 2020-2021 election results, an officer bake-off, a Quiplash (jackbox) game, a kahoot, and a Netflix Party. Later that week, the TSJCL also hosted a virtual Pentathlon Contest.

Phoenix: The Phoenix The Phoenix constellation was first introduced by the Dutch astronomer Petrus Plancius and is harder to view North of the Equator. The constellation resembles the mythical fire bird written about in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. According to Ovid, the phoenix lives for 500 years until it sets its nests and itself on fire. While it may seem like a sad story, the phoenix did this for its offspring to grow out of its ashes. When our State Convention was canceled due to COVID-19, all of our students were extremely sad, so the TSJCL rose from the ashes in order to create a virtual celebration of Rome’s Birthday to keep morale and JCLove high.

1. Latin students performed Magistra Stehle’s original play set in the mythological world of Arcadia.

2. The BASIS JCL recreated the Roman Forum, including games, “vinum,” and shops. They also included a Roman Banquet with this Royal Court and an elected Caesar.

3. Famous author George O’Connor visited the BASIS JCL to talk about his mythologically-themed books.
