NVSU-CF wins big at 12th Nat’l Forestry Olympiad BY EMMANUEL C. JOSE

FIVE STUDENTS from NVSU - College of Forestry (NVSU-CF) emerged as firstrunners up after winning four championships out of the seven categories, in the recently concluded 12th National Forestry Olympiad (NFO) held at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna, on Feb. 22-24, 2017. The NVSU team consisted of senior BS Forestry students Elvis P. Bawi-il and Shirley P. Humiwat, junior BS Forestry students Gerlyn B. Orpiano and Liwliwa F. Mamaoag, and sophomore BS Forestry student Aldwin B. Curamen. The group bagged the championship titles in leaf identification, seed identification, wood identification, and NFO’s major highlight, the quiz contest. The team also clinched 2nd place in forest surveying, 6th place in tree measurement, and 8th place in tree disease identification.

‘AMAZING’ FEAT Team members Orpiano and Mamaoag shared that bringing home the trophies and medals still feel surreal and that the achievement they have

after landing 7th place as Top Ranking State University and Colleges (SUCs) during the 30th annual national conference of Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP, Incorporated) on Feb. 15 to 17, 2017. Out of the 110 participating SUCs member institution, 22 SUCs made it to the top 10. Joining NVSU in the top 7 spot were University of Northern Philippines and Pangasinan State University. The awardees were selected based on the following criteria: program accreditation, internal quality assurance system, participation of trained AACCUP internal accreditors, participation of SUCs to scheduled AACCUP trainings and conferences, and the awards received by SUCs for the last

five years. Different SUCs sent pertinent documents to AACCUP which were thoroughly evaluated and screened by the organizing committee. “We make sure that we submit our programs to accreditation. Once our internal accreditors are invited by AACCUP, the top management always sends our colleagues to act as accreditors to various SUCs. We have 100% percent attendance to all conferences, trainings, seminars, conducted by AACCUP,” said NVSU Quality Assurance Director Dr. Jocelyn Cabrera. To date, NVSU has 40 total number of AACCUP accredited programs: 45% of the total programs were granted Level III status, 42.5% were given Level II, and 12.5% were accorded as Level I status. She hopes that with continuous support and teamwork, NVSU will make it to the top 5 next year that would further prove the institution a true quality service provider. Along Cabrera, the said recognition was received by University President Dr. Andres Z. Taguiam, OIC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Loreta R. Vivian Galima, Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Araceli V. Dumagas, Quality Assurance Coordinator Bambang Campus Dr. Corazon Cudia. When asked about the team’s strengths and weaknesses, Orpiano said knowing their individual capacity helped them make both ends meet. “What we consider as our strength is that we know our individual weaknesses, and with that we know when to adjust and how to cope with one another,” said Orpiano. On the other hand, Mamaoag considers every event as their weakness, but with the team’s effort, they were able to function as one. “With teamwork, all that we gained and learned during the in-house review paid off.

HARVEST TIME Dr. Shierel F. Vallesteros, NVSU-CF team coach, said that this year’s Olympiad was the most exciting and fruitful year, and that it served as a harvest season from all the sacrifices and challenges the team have gone through. “I am proud of what they have achieved ginawa nila yung best nila. And I am sure that the other schools were threatened by our performance,” Vallesteros said. For the next NFO on 2019, Vallesteros shared their plans like the continuation of in-house review which she considered effective. “We plan to further intensify the in-house review because we have seen its effectiveness. Definitely, we will focus on the topics which we performed least during the contest,” said Vallesteros. Aside Vallesteros, For. April Sagadraca and Lorena Laguardia served as the team’s assistant coaches, together with For. Romnick Pascua as trainer, and Mr. Jayson Caranza, as their informal coach.#

UETC, CSIT ties up for Web-Based Faculty Evaluation BY EMMANUEL C. JOSE

FAITHFUL IN innovating methods for the student services in the University, the NVSU Educational Testing Center (UETC) and the Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT) Department launched the Webbased Faculty Performance Evaluation System (FPES) on April 17. According to UETC Director Prof. Josefina Sana, the project was set to make the evaluation process more convenient and accessible to students as compared to the previous computer- and paperbased evaluation procedure. The Paper-based evaluation system usually runs for four months including the room-to-room evaluation. This method, however, was frowned because of its bulky storage, high production cost and inefficient retrieval. Thus, the idea of

computerized system to webbased evaluation materialized having automated data sorting, filtering, quick data storage and retrieval. HOW IT WORKS Students, through their smartphones and laptops with Internet access, can now evaluate their teachers by logging in to their iNVSU U-Connect accounts, (if none, students can register at the E-Lab). Next, access the FPES page at https://fpes.nvsu. edu.ph, and enter the required information in the screen. Choose the name of the faculty and students can now start the evaluation. The FPES measures four key areas of teaching personnel which are Commitment, Knowledge of the Subject Matter, Teaching for Independent Learning, and Management of Learning.

UP AND RUNNING As to date of writing (April 27, 2017 - 09:00am), Prof. Sana, with reference to the FPES Evaluation status per college, revealed that 1,085 students have already evaluated their teachers. The evaluation turn out as of April 27 hit 19.08% of the 5,685 total student population including senior high school. Prof. Sana stands positive for the program’s success and calls for the immediate response

of the different College deans to remind their students to participate in the evaluation period until May 19, 2017. The said program was made possible through the helping hands of Prof. Sana, Vilchor Perdido, Nilda dela Cruz, Fidel Patricio, and Carmelo Alejo Bisquera of the CSIT Department.
