conquer the challenges. We will always face challenges in life, but it’s how we perceive the situation, handle it, and move on that counts. We can crumble, procrastinate or ignore it, or we can rise up to the challenge and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow. In our 2019 edition of Bloom Magazine we feature the unique stories of amazing people who have chosen to rise up and overcome the challenges they have been presented with, and have found new meaning and purpose in their lives in the process.
Chef Cynthia Louise knows all too well about challenges. From a primitive upbringing with no formal education, her challenges came later in life as she began her quest to overcome limitations placed on her by society, and follow her passion for food and cooking to become a world renowned wholefood chef. Facing major health challenges, Therese Kerr embarked on a journey that would ultimately change the course of her life, and her family’s too, as she embraced this opportunity to learn and discover the way to optimum health and wellness. In doing so, she found her life purpose, now dedicating her time and energy to bringing awareness to the impact of environmental chemicals and toxicants on human health. Challenged by chronic fatigue and unable to find an explanation as to why he was suffering, Frazer Bailey’s determination to get to the root cause of his condition took him on a search across the globe to find the answers which he now shares in his tell all documentary. Challenged by mental illness Rob Gronbeck flipped his situation, using his personal experience and qualifications to become a practitioner in neuroscience and help others reach peak performance and achieve the extraordinary. Challenged with learning difficulties and emotional issues, Michael Johnson chose to transform his life, learn from the world’s thought leaders and achieve profound success, building a business that now provides others with opportunities to do the same. As a population, we are challenged by rapidly increasing electromagnetic frequencies (EMF) emitted from wireless technologies. Laura Graham from Earthing Oz shares the many profound benefits of earthing (or grounding) and the simple ways we can reduce our exposure and protect ourselves and our families. Many of us face these or similar challenges, so how do we deal with them? WE MAKE A CHOICE. WE GET INFORMED. WE LEARN. WE GROW. We’re proud to share with you all of these inspirational conversations, knowing that there is an incredible life awaiting you once you step outside the status quo. So grab a cuppa, put your feet up, and enjoy the read, for challenges prepare ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things… xoxo
“The key is to learn to enjoy the challenges, obstacles and problems you face, after all, they are there to help you grow physically, mentally, emotionally and metaphysically” – Michael Johnson

real food real passion. Chef Cynthia Louise is a qualified whole food chef who is leading the whole food revolution and transforming traditional foods into simple healthy recipes.
Jodie: I have had several friends tell me that they have a ‘chef crush’ on you! Let’s get to know Chef Cynthia Louise.
Cynthia: I grew up in Papua New Guinea as an adopted white girl in a country that was very primitive.
My schooling and education was practically non existent and during the first twenty one years of my life I climbed coconut trees, went fishing and hunting, and spent a lot of time cooking with the mamas. I was immersed in this incredible culture with no television or influence of food fad dieting, or women complaining about their bodies, or teenagers with body image issues or anything like that. I moved to Australia as a young adult and had several businesses over the years. I got into fashion and I owned a secondhand shop for a while. Then, as time went on, I spent more and more time cooking for my friends and discovered just how much they loved what I was creating in the kitchen.
Jodie: What a wonderful wholesome childhood and what an influence the mamas had in your life for you to remain so deeply connected to cooking.
Cynthia: I had a natural ability and a connection to the foods and the recipes. I loved watching cooking shows and getting ideas from Jamie Oliver and some of the really great chefs from all over the world. I enjoyed recreating dishes and then creating my own. I really enjoy making recipes from scratch, it feels really easy for me. I then went into business in a food court of seven outlets with a variety of foods from different cultures like Sushi and Chinese dishes. Following this I opened the most amazing fish and chip shop in Hobart. I created it from the ground up in the beautiful location of Blackman’s Bay in Hobart, right on the beach. With the weather being so cold during the winter months, it was a struggle to stay on top financially and I eventually had to close my doors. I was devastated,
I had no money and I was traumatized. I was 34 years old, with a son and I found myself standing naked in front of the mirror wondering what it was that I was going to do with the rest of my life. Jodie: It seems we all experience defining moments in our lives and they often come in the midst of our biggest challenges.
Cynthia: My friends had always told me that I was an amazing cook and encouraged me to do something with it.
With no formal education I found myself to be quite nervous and scared but at the same time I was determined and decided to do a chef’s apprenticeship at 34 years of age.
WHO: CHEF CYNTHIA LOUISE | OCCUPATION: REAL FOOD CHEF | AS SPOKEN TO JODIE FERRERO
I was terrified, my ego was on the line but I knew that if I wanted to be taken seriously I needed some sort of certification, something that would give me some credentials and give me the opportunities I wanted. I struggled so much to find a business to back me and give me the chance to follow my dream. I approached fine dining venues, pubs, clubs, cafes, hotels, restaurants, anything I could find but I found myself walking out time and time again, either due to lack of vacant positions or because I discovered that the food in the establishment was coming straight from a can or a bottle, all processed and I just could not contemplate it. Jodie: I’m sure that process was filled with shock and disappointment for you.
Cynthia: The contrast between my foundation years living in undeveloped, quite primitive surroundings and now, attending interviews in amazing refined hotels and venues was never more apparent to me.
I would meet the chefs, see the kitchens and to my surprise would discover that much of the food was not real food. I didn’t really know what that meant at the time as I wasn’t in the wellness industry. I just knew how vastly different it was to the foods that nourished me as a child. One day I came across a health retreat. I just knew this was where I needed to be. I approached them and after pursuing them with persistence for more than three months and pleading with them to give me a go, I was taken on as a first year apprentice chef at the pay rate of $5.50 per hour and relegated to the kitchen. Jodie: …and so you began… to create the life of your dreams!
Cynthia: It was a very daunting time for me, I was intimidated and bullied a bit by one of the other chefs, not the establishment, but a chef who simply wasn’t on the same vibration as me. As I commenced my theory, I discovered that what was being cooked at the school was the complete opposite to what was being cooked at the health retreat where food was as close as nature intended, with low human interference, nothing taken out and nothing put in, just real whole food. We made everything from scratch, absolutely everything, even the bread, the milk, everything! Six months into my time there, I really found my footing. I progressed quickly, successfully gaining my qualifications and after some time teaching and leading at the retreat, I was ready to go out on my own.
Jodie: That’s a great achievement! Where to from there?
Cynthia: My mission was to share my love of cooking, my skills, my knowledge and my recipes with the public. Whether that meant the mama down the road on a low income or the high falutin health conscious corporate. I’m essentially about understanding and encompassing the human being. I became really good at what I did. I collaborated with friends in their restaurant, Three Worlds on the Gold Coast. Within a matter of months, Three Worlds was thriving, going from 45 seats to 150 seats with people lining up at the door. It was unique with no caffeine, no white sugar, no dairy, no animal protein, no alcohol - it was everything that other restaurants weren’t. I’d open three hours a day in the evening and I attracted the sick, the fat sick and the nearly dead! It was the perfect place for those that wanted to eat something really nourishing.
I had a growing reputation and before long, Life Changing Documentaries picked me up and I became an expert on their panel which put me in front of a huge audience. The flow on effect from this exposure was amazing with people visiting my restaurant to try my recipes. I realised then that I had new opportunities awaiting me. Jodie: …and the rest, as they say is history, right!
Cynthia: I had worked closely with Dr. Libby Weaver during my time at the health retreat and we grew closer over the years as we both went on to study and gain qualifications, a Ph.D in Autism and Biochemistry for her and mine as a Chef. The timing was perfect for us to join forces and create something amazing. Together, we wrote 3 best selling international cookbooks. Impressed by the film Food Matters, I closely followed FMTV and the fantastic documentaries and content they release with aspirations of one day presenting to their global audience. My hopes were realised when they noticed me and offered me a contract for a major series on their platform.
I then moved to Bali to create my studio to film my cooking classes. I realised that the best way for me to share my content and be able to bring myself into the kitchens of people around the globe was through my online platform. My cooking classes are exactly that, not simply sitting down watching, but rather participating as I guide you step by step in how to prepare, how to decorate and how to put it together just like you would in a face to face cooking class. The entire cooking process in your own familiar environment! I’ve created a raw food detox cooking class to support people receiving cancer treatments, a gluten free cooking class, a vegan cooking class and many more, all based on whole foods principals. Jodie: I love that you make cooking with whole foods so simple and accessible.
Jodie: Your journey so far has been incredible and your passion, your persistence and your commitment has helped you reach your goals with much more success to come I’m sure.
Cynthia: Being a cafe consultant is another aspect of what I do and love. I help people who have a dream of creating a whole foods cafe and don’t know where to start. I bring my expertise and partner with them to develop their business and become successful cafe owners with profitable businesses. The majority of these have high plant based menus, with a few including some animal protein. Cynthia: My big vision and my goal is to have my own TV show on Food Network. This is something I really, truly aspire to have.
I feel like my food and my attitude is very vibrant and I want people to feel comfortable in the kitchen, without pressure to use super foods and faraway ingredients with expensive costs, but rather just be able to cook with the humble potato and some vegetables.

leading the no-tox revolution. Therese Kerr is set to radically transform our buying habits by shining the light on the lack of integrity and truth on labels in the cosmetics industry. She believes wholeheartedly that a shift must take place at a grass roots level to enable real and lasting change. Therese has devoted much of her life to researching the impact of environmental chemicals and toxicants on human health. She is incredibly knowledgeable on this subject and is passionate about educating and empowering others. Therese was voted Australian Organic Industry Leader and one of Australia’s Top 50 most Influential Women. We take an in depth look at the widespread detrimental effects not only to our health, but to the health of our children and generations to come. For the sake of people and planet.
Jodie: Therese, your passion for wellness and your advocacy work is truly admirable. Take me back to that defining moment when you discovered your purpose.
Therese: In 1995, I had Endometriosis and Hashimoto’s and then in 2001, I had tumors in my spleen. Like most people, until I had illness I didn’t realise the importance of wellness. Since then I’ve been living and breathing health and wellness by educating people on everyday toxicants that affect our bodies. When we learn about the level of toxicants and environmental factors that we subject our bodies to, we then become proactive with our choices.
Jodie: It is certainly important information to share to raise awareness of the impact on our health and we need to understand that it starts with the producing and manufacturing processes.
Therese: Exactly!
There’s so many different classes of chemicals in our everyday cosmetics, not just skin care, but basically everything - skin, hair, beauty, personal, baby, oral care, men’s care, perfume, cologne, fragrance, makeup, candles - anything that you find on the cosmetic floor in a department store, not to mention the amount of plastics used in almost every area of our lives. Until last year, I was predominantly focusing on skincare, but after recently selling the major portion of The Divine Company I’m now able to dedicate my time to be an ambassador of InnerOrigin, an online wellness marketplace. Professor Mark Cohen, Dr Charlie Teo. David Wolfe, Pete Evans and Layne Beachley are also ambassadors, and this is a people powered movement. InnerOrigin provides transparency so you know the country of origin of all ingredients in all products. All products are reviewed and approved by an independent Product Advisory Board of which I’m a member. Nothing gets through or makes it onto the platform unless it’s healthy and free of harmful chemicals and toxicants.
WHO: THERESE KERR | OCCUPATION: INNER ORIGIN AMBASSADOR | AS SPOKEN TO JODIE FERRERO
Jodie: It sounds like InnerOrigin could shake things up in the retail space and perhaps have a positive ripple effect.
Therese: We’re bringing a complete paradigm shift to retail and along with it much needed integrity, transparency, authenticity, honesty, and truth on label and that’s vitally important. We’re raising awareness around labelling and the word ‘organic’.
Companies can claim that a product is organic even if it contains only one natural ingredient, and yet may contain hundreds of chemicals. The unsuspecting consumer, who isn’t aware, will think they’re buying a healthy alternative when really, they’re being deceived. You’ll see paraben-free or SLS free, but what they don’t tell you is that the chemicals that replace the paraben’s or the SLS are even worse than the original chemicals.
Therese: We deserve the truth and to know what we’re buying. We need to transform this at ground level. We can do this by changing our buying habits, switching from the big retailers and purchasing from a trusted place where you can be assured that every product has been reviewed and approved. You demand authenticity, transparency and truth on a label.
Jodie: That can be really confusing for the uninformed consumer and create stress, anxiety and doubt in the simple act of making a good choice.
Jodie: Let’s say I have a new cosmetic product. What’s the process in Australia to get my new product onto the shelf?
Therese: There isn’t any pre-market health testing on any cosmetic or skincare product before being released into the Australian market.
The use of chemicals in cosmetics in Australia and the United States is largely unregulated, with most chemicals being considered safe until proven otherwise. Very few chemicals are ever tested in cosmetics. Miranda and I have created over 125 different cosmetic products. We’ve never once been approached by a regulatory body to ask us what’s in our products.
Jodie: Most people would naturally think that what’s on the shelves is safe.
Therese: Companies are driven by profit, not by people’s health.
Since WWII with the industrial revolution, we have allowed hundreds of thousands of chemicals to be released into our world with minimal, if any, safety testing.
There are eight major classes of chemicals in our everyday products - carcinogens, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, reproductive toxins, developmental toxins, neurotoxic toxins which are toxic to our nervous system, reproductive toxins, obesogens that cause our fat cells to multiply and teratogens which cause birth and embryo defects. From processed foods containing artificial colours, flavours and preservatives, to agricultural chemicals sprayed on our crops, we have been apathetic and blissfully unaware as a society, blatantly accepting the growth in consumerism and convenience we desire to make our lives easier (I was no different), but at what cost? Jodie: From my understanding there are only a handful of chemicals recognised to be harmful and therefore banned from use in cosmetic products within Australia. However, in Europe cosmetics are much more highly regulated with more than a thousand chemicals prohibited?
Therese: Australia blindly follows the cosmetics industry in America. They have their own Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel (CIR) to determine whether the chemicals they use in their products are safe. In over 40 years, they have banned only 10 chemicals in cosmetics. In contrast to that,
the European Commission established the REACH Program in 2007, and have now banned over 1,330 chemicals that they consider broadly toxic and dangerous to human health. These chemicals are known to be harmful, yet in Australia, and most countriesd around the world, we buy products containing them.
Unfortunately, The Cosmetics Industry in America (that we follow blindly) is predominatly a self-regulating body and the government should never allow a self-regulated industry. 10 |
PAGE 11
Jodie: That is very concerning and a fact that most consumers would be blissfully unaware of I’m sure.
Therese: I believe we are the only species actively contributing to our own extinction and to the extinction of other lifeforms on this planet and we are doing it without even knowing that we’re doing it! We’re allowing companies to release chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, glyphosates, they are chemicals in our foods. The chemicals in our cosmetics are being washed down the drains, being released out into our waterways, without any concern as to the impact. Cancer has increased from 2005 to 2015 by 33%. Predictions now are that by age 85, one in two people will have cancer. Cancer is now the number one disease around the world and also for children under 15 in Australia. We have over a hundred different autoimmune diseases in this country alone. Sperm count in men has declined from 1973 to 2011 by 59%, according to the Systemic Review published in 2017. I believe it’s worse than that now. There’s a documentary called ‘The Disappearing Male’ and I encourage everybody to watch it. The documentary states that of the remaining sperm, 85% is considered abnormal. The World Health Organization, in a report from 2012 states an increase of 400% in genital malformation in baby boys and according to a report released in February 2019, the incidence of genital malformation in Australia now sits at 1 in 115 baby boys now being born with malformed genitals. 70% of women as at 2016, had some hormone-related disorder. One in seven women of childbearing age were considered infertile. Half of all infertility cases are now men, one in six couples are experiencing fertility challenges, and half are related to men. Young girls are going through puberty at age 8 to 10 now, it used to be 12 to 14, and the World Health Organization report states that we’re now on the tip of the iceberg in relation to the incidence of hormone-related disorders. So if we’re already on the tip of the iceberg, where are we heading? When I share the above statistics, most people are alarmed and shocked. Yet with almost 50% of Australian’s now having a chronic illness as reported by the ABC in July 2019, it begs to question why on earth is this information not public knowledge? Therese: Yes, the Australian Organic Market Report last year stated that more people are spending time in supermarkets reading labels in search for healthier products. The big companies however are jumping on the bandwagon and are, for lack of a better word, bastardising products with misleading marketing slogans and labels to deceive consumers. If this continues to happen people will lose faith and trust in ‘organic’ products. We need integrity, truth and transparency in retail.
Jodie: Absolutely. We’re starting to see an increase in conscious consumerism, people taking time to consider their product choices, their environmental footprint, and the impact their decisions can have on their health, the health of their family and the health of the planet.
Jodie: As the ‘Queen of Clean’ I’m sure it’s probably never been more important to you than now, when you have another grandchild on the way, to advocate for the wellness of people and planet for generations to come. You certainly put your heart into everything you do!
Therese: You know, the best thing that happened to me was having tumors in my spleen because it put my family on a path towards wellness.
Children nowadays are being born pre-polluted with literally thousands of chemicals in their little umbilical cords. Babies do not have the detoxification ability of an adult. Their immune, nervous and endocrine systems are not fully developed so these chemicals remain in their little bodies.
This predisposes them to potential weight problems because when we can’t get rid of chemicals, our body purposely puts on more fat to store those chemicals in. Professor Grand Jane and Professor Lundergan from the United States have spent their lives studying neurotoxic chemicals and state that “exposure in utero to these neurotoxic chemicals will impact a baby or a child’s IQ by age seven”. There’s so much research that I could quote regarding this, I live and breathe it as you know. My vision is to transform health within one generation, and how do we do that? By educating and empowering parents to minimize or hopefully never expose their children to these harmful chemicals so that in turn, when they have babies, they don’t expose their children.
Jodie: As a parent myself I understand how important it is to make good choices from the outset when it comes to the health of my children and how equally important it is to empower them and guide them with knowledge and awareness so that they too can make good decisions in the future.
Therese: It may sound like doom and gloom, but you know, it’s not. Many illnesses are linked to environmental factors of some sort, even genetic related illnesses, more often than not, are caused by environmental factors that trigger genes to express. We can control what we put in our bodies. We can change what we put on our skin. We can make choices about what cleaning products we use, and we can transform all that in a whim. I ask people not to go into overwhelm, but rather see this as an opportunity for empowerment. I know without a doubt, I control the level of toxicity on my body and
I’m not going to put chemicals on my body that, according to the FDA in America, one in five (that’s almost 20% of all cosmetic products on the market) contain formaldehyde releasing chemicals known to cause cancer.
How many people know that? I’m pretty sure if they did, they’d make healthier choices. Companies will only stop making chemical laden products when we stop buying them and the demand ceases. Jodie: I find that it is a case of continual evaluation and I think it’s so important to recognise that we each have a voice and a choice and if we want to see things change for the better we need to take individual action and collectively this will make a difference.
Therese: There’s so much information now available, but people have to be open and be willing to learn and change. I made the choice as a result of my illness to embrace the learning and use this knowledge to transform my health and my family’s health. I can honestly tell you it’s been the best thing to ever happen to myself and to my children and my grandchildren because they are all healthy as a result of what I went through. I ask people not to wait until illness strikes, but to choose health. We have a public profile as a family, and I believe if you have a public profile you have a responsibility or an obligation if you know something, to share it. I could sit and rest on my laurels, but that’s not who I am. I’m really about educating and empowering people. People say to me, “you’re so determined to make a difference, what do you do for fun?”. Well, my husband and I ride motorbikes. We go for adventures in our motor home, we ride horses. I’m still doing all of that and I’m 54. I’m probably more active than I’ve ever been in my life! I do ice bathing and I climb mountains. It is the first time in history that adult children are dying before their parents. As a population we are living shorter and dying longer and that’s not how I want to live my life. I want to go out singing and dancing!
Jodie: You’re a shining example of health and a wonderful advocate for wellness Therese. Let’s continue these conversations in our own lives, and I wish you wonderful travels in your motor home.

finding the root cause. Australian film director, Frazer Bailey, had no idea that one single powerful punch would send him on a compelling journey for a further 10 years searching for answers to his health. Documenting his story in his own movie, Root Cause, Frazer lifts the lid on the controversial subject of root canals and how this could be a silent link to many underlying chronic illnesses.
Emma: For people who haven’t seen your documentary, can you give us a rundown of your story and where it all began?
Frazer: The documentary is essentially my personal story and search to get my health back.
For 10 years my health was in decline, panic attacks gave way to chronic fatigue, out of the number of Western doctors and health practitioners I saw, they either thought I was faking it, or they didn’t have any solutions. It didn’t take me long to realise that western medicine didn’t have the answers I was looking for. That is what catapulted me into this journey of getting to the root cause.
Emma: So, you stepped outside of the box?
Frazer: Completely, I was on a mission to try anything and everything. At the time I was very fortunate for two reasons – 1. I had money and 2. I had time. I had to stop work for 6 months which gave me the time to research.
WHO: FRAZER BAILEY | OCCUPATION FILM DIRECTOR | AS SPOKEN TO: EMMA LODGE
PAGE 15
Emma: I had to have a chuckle at the start of your movie seeing all the different alternative health modalities that you tried, it reminds me of me! I went through a similar self-exploratory process a few years ago. There are so many weird and wonderful modalities out there, is there anything that stands out that makes you laugh that you tried?
Frazer: There are so many very crazy and ridiculous things I tried, but the thing is, when you’re desperate you’ll try anything. I remember I joined this group called ‘The Oneness Movement’ which is a spiritual movement out of India. It was pretty wild and ‘out there’, you get amazing energy transfers, but if a normal person came in and saw what was going on, they’d think everyone had lost the plot! But all these things were stepping stones helping me along the way.
Emma: And that’s great that you chose to be proactive in whatever way you could, there’s so many people who would just give up, and their condition becomes their life. Like you said, when you’re that desperate and when the doctors aren’t giving you any answers or accusing you of making it up, then it’s a choice to take your health into your own hands.
Frazer: Exactly. I even tried urine therapy! The American and English press gave me a bit of a hard time about it, but I was more so trying to be illustrative of the fact that I had tried anything and everything to get my health back. I’m not telling people to try urine therapy, but there are amazing amounts of information out there about how effective it is. And when you’re desperate you’ll try anything!
Emma: Sounds like there has been a lot of self-discovery and character shaping along this journey too.
Emma: So, when did you discover your root canal was the cause?
Frazer: 100%
Frazer: It was purely by chance, my girlfriend at the time was a pharmacist, and through hanging out with me she became interested in alternative medicine. I heard about a modality in America called Bioresonance Analysis of Health (BAH) and was watching videos on it and showing her. We were both blown away so I suggested to her she should be the first person to bring this modality to Australia. We soon headed over to San Francisco, I was just playing tourist while she was on her course, but whilst there I asked if I could get my blood tested. So I had my blood pricked and put on a slide (in BAH the doctor looks at the blood from a frequency quantum physics theory rather than a physical like how a normal doctor would test), he also used a German instrument called a Lecher Antenna, which looks very basic but essentially measures frequency and resonance.
When I got back later that day to pick her up, she said my results showed an infected root canal. That completely flawed me as firstly I didn’t tell him I had a root canal, and secondly no dentist had ever commented on the dark discolouration of my gum, so I let it slide. Emma: Was the dark discolouration infection?
Emma: And did you get it replaced with a denture?
Frazer: Yes, and that was the start of my research into root canals. I started exploring YouTube and podcasts listening to doctors and dentists talking about them being toxic to health. I literally threw the book at trying to get my health back through eating well, detoxing, having regular infrared saunas, but I kept sliding back, that’s when I realised there’s something to this. So, I decided to go to a dentist that specialises in holistic dentistry, he had an EAV machine (Electro Acupuncture by Voll) which measures the energetic state of specific points along the body known as the meridians. Everything was fine as he was testing, until he reached the one tooth that had the root canal and the machine just screamed, the needle was off the scale, and that was enough proof for me that I had to get this sucker out. Frazer: Yes, you have a denture while the gum repairs, and then I had a bridge. The alternate would be to remove the tooth, but for me I was punched in the face, it was my front tooth, so that was the reason I ended up with a root canal.
In hindsight, what I should have done is what I did now, and that is get the tooth removed and have a bridge.
Emma: Why do people choose the root canal option? Is it cheaper? or is there more work involved with a bridge?
Frazer: A root canal is really a cosmetic procedure. It was invented for the rich people in the 1930’s as they didn’t want a tooth missing which made them look poor. Most people choose a root canal because they are ignorant to the fact that
root canals are toxic. If you’re given an option of saving a tooth compared to removing a tooth, chances are most people would choose to keep the tooth. That’s why I opted for it, it was my front tooth and I was ignorant to the fact that it could have systemic consequences to my health. Emma: But surely with state-of-theart technology there would be new practices in dentistry offering fewer toxic options?
Emma: So how did the movie come about?
Frazer: A bridge is the best option and zirconia implant second best. There is a bit of conjecture to the second option. 99% of implants in Australia are titanium which are shocking, don’t do that either! The zirconia implant is a material that the body more readily accepts, but it’s still the second-best option, where the bridge is the best option, or simply leaving it alone. Frazer: I
said to my business partner “we’ve done a doco before (called e-motion), I think we should do a doco about this whole root canal thing”. Naturally he was a bit unsure as he didn’t know much about it, then once we started interviewing the doctors and dentists around America, he was shocked to realise that this literally is like modern day tobacco! The tobacco industry used to promote smoking is good for you there’s nothing wrong with it, but now the truth and consequences have finally been exposed.
Emma: Wow just like your movie; you’re exposing the truth and consequences to root canals. Were you prepared for the controversy and backlash it has received?
Frazer: I knew I was going to get a backlash from the dental community, firstly getting the movie on Netflix and then the American Dental Association removing it. I mean you’ve just got to follow the money and 25 million root canals done a year at $3,000 a pop, that’s big business you’re pissing off. I’ve got zero animosity to dentists because they’re good hard-working people and they’ve been trained that way, but to have 10 years of learning and then the average Joe comes along and tells you otherwise, they don’t really want to hear it.
Emma: It would be hard to take.
Frazer: Yes exactly, it’s hard to take so I don’t blame them. But I do believe that high above in the dental community they know, but the problem is it opens such a legal can of worms that they’ve just got to shut it down.
Emma: And what did Netflix say to you when they shut your movie down?
Frazer: We’re one step removed; we go through a distributer. We knew there was pressure, as we had dentists on the inside sending us information that the president of Netflix had been contacted.
Emma: Oh wow.
Frazer: Reading between the lines here... from Netflix point of view, let’s face it, the ADA have credibility, and have concluded that my movie is causing harm to people, according to them it’s all pseudo-science and people are being damaged from watching it. In the eyes of Netflix, we’re just a small film, it’s not worth their while stepping into a legal battle for a small documentary. So that’s the way I see it, I don’t blame Netflix, it’s just like I said, the people high up in the ADA know that its toxic but imagine once they admit that to the general public, it opens up a can of worms that they don’t want to open, and I think the legal battles would be huge.
Emma: From what I’ve seen there are heaps of journal studies backing up the health implications of root canals.
Frazer: I always get attacked that there’s no science to what I’m saying, but I’ve got a ton of science that’s all on the website and it’s all throughout the movie, but
what I find really interesting is there’s no science to prove that root canals are healthy and don’t cause harm. They’re attacking my film on pseudo-science which is crazy as there’s so much research being done to prove that every root canal is toxic, however there is no science to back up that root canals aren’t harmful.
Emma: I was reading the reviews from your movie, there’s hundreds of them and I got totally sucked in! What was interesting however is I could see a distinct trend, the ratings were either 1 or 10, there was nothing in-between.
Frazer: Yes, the 1’s are usually dentists!
Emma: And the people giving 10 are the people who have been in your shoes, who have had the same experience, and they know how it’s changed their life getting their root canal taken out. Emma: No but the movie says it all, and you can tell the difference with the reviewers who have rated 10. Their personal testimony says it all.
Frazer: Yes, exactly. Dentists are being told to rate the movie 1 star to bring my score down and there’s not much I can do about that.
Frazer: People email and chat to me on Instagram.
I get the abusive dentists who want to punch me and then I get the other people who thank me.
I received a touching email from a lady who had a devastating health condition. She saw Dr David Howard and wrote me a beautiful email saying after 7 years she got her health back because she watched my film and got her root canal taken out, if it wasn’t for my movie, she’d still be sick. Touching, really touching emails make all that abuse worthwhile. Emma: During your 10 years of suffering (obviously at the time it would have been awful), but now do you look back and think of it as a blessing? Everything you’ve learnt along the way and the impact the movie has had on so many people’s lives?
Frazer: I think secretly most people when they’re that down and desperate make a pact with God or the divine source or whatever you want to call it. I said if you get me through this, I’ll do good. So sharing my story in this documentary is my way of giving back, and mostly trying to set the record straight.
Emma: The message I picked up overall from the movie is its getting people to think outside of the square when it comes to health, and bringing awareness to the fact our body isn’t just individual components, it’s intrinsically linked and must be treated as a whole, everything feeds off everything else.
Frazer: Yes, we need to try and convert people from the Newtonian way of thinking with the body. We’re an energetic body as well as a physical body and I think once you affect the energetic body which is the meridian system, then the physical body can manifest health or disease.
Emma: And I guess the other thing is just because you can’t feel it, it doesn’t mean it’s not there. I’ve seen testimonies of people saying they’ve had root canals for years with no problem, so I guess some people are more resilient than others?
Frazer: In the documentary I use the smoking analogy where we all know someone who smoked their whole life and didn’t die of lung cancer, and then dies of something else. Then there are people who smoke for 10 years and they die from lung cancer. A root canal is a toxin in the body, but again if you’ve got a strong constitution and you’re doing a lot of things right, then you may be able to go your whole life without any adverse effect, however some people can feel the effects within a year. For me it was 10 years later. So that’s why most people don’t join the dots because it is such a slow burner.
Emma: I see a lot of people asking where they can find a holistic dentist. Is there a website or directory? And how do you know they’re credible?
Frazer: There is a find a dentist link on the website, or a very quick way is to google holistic dentist in your area. Make sure they don’t give root canals, but they do zirconia implants instead, then I’d say 9/10 they’re a good holistic dentist.
Emma: I think it’s a fantastic thing you’ve done with speaking out. It’s a shame it’s been taken down from Netflix but at the same time its created conversation and ruffled some feathers, which is what we need to grab people’s attention and get people uncomfortable, no change happens without getting uncomfortable.
Frazer: Thanks Emma. I’m pleased that you think it’s as important as I do.

what if micro nutrition is the key to happiness? Depression is a common mental disorder. More than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression worldwide. In Australia, it’s estimated that 45% of people will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime. More than 3,000 Australians died by suicide in 2017. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians between 15 and 44 years of age.
Clinical psychologist, Julia J Rucklidge, PhD, has explored a range of scientific research showing that minerals and vitamins known collectively as micronutrients can have significant improvement on mental health or illness. Her research shows people suffering depression and anxiety have responded and made drastic improvements when supplied with high levels of nutrition, most of which are missing from our diets. All neurotransmitters play an important role in our mental wellbeing. Each neurotransmitter requires certain minerals, vitamins and amino acids as building blocks. Certain hormones also have a huge impact on our mood and without 100% functionality of our organs we won’t be happy either. This shows how complex treatments have to be, and why treating depression and anxiety has to be customised to the individual client, always. Christiane Wagner, founder of Body and Skin Care, Cairns Beaches, has developed a complex holistic treatment “Nutrition Fights Depression & Anxiety” to support sufferers of depression and anxiety with a customised nutritional treatment program, based on blood tests. Being a facilitator for Family / Systemic Constellations, Christiane provides her clients with one on one or group sessions to untangle family dynamics, and to live life as happy as is possible. This program is also available remotely via Zoom & Skype. Take care and remember beauty and health start on your plate.

shining the light on photobiomodulation. Dr. Todd Lizon is a practicing chiropractor and tireless researcher who has obsessively devoted the last 5 years to the pursuit of the science of photobiomodulation and its effect on health and wellbeing. He has published numerous articles and dozens of videos on photobiomodulation and firmly believes the time is not far away that a red/near infrared light will be in every home.
Emma: When did you begin your interest in photobiomodulation?
Todd: I’ve been into saunas for a long time. I’ve always recommended them to assist my clients with chronic disease. Eventually in 2012 I got into the manufacturing of near infrared saunas and designed a portable one primarily for relaxation, stress management and detoxification. Since then I’ve dived in deep reading and researching everything I can about it.
Emma: I’ve only recently heard about the benefits of near infrared light, have the studies been around for long?
Todd: We’ve known about photobiomodulation (light therapy) for over 40 years. It was accidently discovered in 1967 by a chap named Endre Mester from Hungary. He acquired a low level red laser (that he thought was a high powered laser) and used it to experiment on rats to see if he could treat cancerous tumours. Working on the rats he soon realised there was no change at all to the cancer, however what he did notice was the cut where the tumour had been implanted healed faster and their hair grew back quicker. So, what are some of the uses for it now? Hair growth and injuries. Back then they didn’t know how it worked, they just knew it did a lot of things. It’s really only been the last 10 15 years that we’ve started to understand how it all works.

Emma: I’ve been reading up on some of the studies and its incredible the broad spectrum of things near infrared light treats.
Emma: And mitochondria are the “powerhouses” of the cell…
Todd: The studies are irrefutable, of which there are now thousands of journal articles. You won’t see transformation straight away in a single session, but we know the effect is there. The biggest objections people have as soon as they hear about light therapy is, they think its very airy fairy non-scientific, how can light possibly have an effect on the body? The way I explain it is to picture visible wavelengths (a rainbow) with purple on the left and red on the right. On the other side of purple is ultraviolet and while this is ionising radiation that can cause damage, we still need it for Vit D production. On the other end is red light and then near infrared light, that’s non-ionising which doesn’t damage cells, but still is needed and has a positive effect on the cells as well. I also explain chlorophyll in plants and how light is absorbed by chlorophyll and turned into energy. Humans have the same capacity to do this which is in the mitochondria. Todd: Mitochondria is the battery and if that’s depleted then things aren’t going to function well. Red light and near infrared light, is what the mitochondria are interested in. This is probably the most neglected piece of the puzzle. People don’t realise they actually need light for their body to produce energy and function properly. This is because we’ve never really understood the sun and infrared light and how it all works until now.
Emma: But people are scared of the sun, it’s been drilled into us to cover up and stay out of the sun.
Emma: Wow there’s a way to apply the sun?
Todd: That is what got me really fascinated. A research paper came out in 2015 where they applied different wavelengths (red and near infrared light) to human skin. They then applied ultra violet light to the same area and guess what.. when they dosed the light and pre-conditioned the skin with near infrared light in the right amounts it didn’t burn. If you stop and think about it, in traditional human society we were always outside, so in the early morning hours you’d get exposed naturally to photobiomodulation that had a protective effect up to SPF 15 sunscreen (as per the research). Nature has built in the sunscreen! But what do we do? We don’t go out in the early morning, so we don’t get the protection, we go out in the middle of the day and then scream the sun is bad. Todd: Yes there’s an application, and if you think about how we should be following the circadiam rhythm, which is basically our 24 hour sleep/wake cycle, waking with the sunrise and winding down at sunset, that’s what nature has intended and there’s got to be a reason for that. One big reason is that red light stimulates the production of hormones, specifically it increases melatonin, and when you increase your melatonin production it not only helps you sleep, but also helps your body repair and recover. It’s one of the most potent antioxidants for our mitochondria and a really big part of regulating our circadian rhythm. You’ve really got to look at what nature has designed, but the problem is how many of us get exposed to natural light?
Emma: We spend so much of our lives indoors these days in front of screens under artificial light. Do you think sickness could be linked due to a lack of natural light?
Todd: My personal belief is we’re near infrared light deficient, and if you’ve got that deficiency your mitochondria are not going to be fuelled adequately.
What makes it even worse is exposing yourself to excessive “blue light” LED lights and screens, especially after dark, as this further depletes melatonin, throws our circadian rhythms off and contributes to the origin of chronic disease from the mitochondrial dysfunction perspective. That’s pretty scary stuff.
Emma And I guess when you look at our cities now, they’re completely lit up, even affecting the circadian rhythms of wildlife and nature.
Todd: It’s hard for people to believe that artificial light can have such a negative health effect, and yet
the research papers are clear, when you expose yourself to artificial light after dark your melatonin production is dramatically decreased which leads to energy and sleep problems.
The only real fix is to get back to natural ways if you can. Now I’m not saying we should all go out and start living in tents and caves, but we have the technology now to mimic what nature has intended while still embracing the positive side of our modern lifestyle. Certain ‘hacks’ are easy such as blue light blocking glasses after sunset. They can be critical. Night-time mode on your phone and computer. Black out curtains for a good sleep. Sunrise in the morning and evenings if you can or use a red/near infrared light. Cold water is another hack for the mitochondria. Emma: Can you talk me through your NIR and heat lamps, I can see you’ve got a few here, what’s the difference?
Emma: Oh I just thought those bulbs weren’t working!
Todd: The first one has two different lights, both red and near infrared light. The red light doesn’t penetrate as deep but is readily absorbed by skin tissue, so this one is typically used more for skin regeneration and collagen production. The near infrared light is invisible to the human eye and penetrates deeper into tissue. Todd: A lot of people think the bulbs aren’t working and a lot of confusion comes from the terms near infrared and far infrared.
Emma: Which is what we can see and what we can’t see?
Todd: The concept that people need to grasp first is that near infrared is heatless, and far infrared is heat. That’s the main thing. If you have a sauna it has to be far infrared. So, a typical sauna is a wooden box with far infrared in the panels, it makes you sweat and you get all the detox benefits - that’s good. The main con is a lot of them have very high EMF levels. The other is most don’t have near infared lights for photobiomodulation.
Emma: What makes the Therabulb lamps that you’re exclusively using so amazing compared to anything else?
Todd: The big difference is we need to treat light as a form of medicine and calculate the dose. If you want to calculate the dose you need to know what the irradiance level is. The Therabulb lamps have been clinically tested to confirm their output and irradiance levels. It’s the dosing of the infrared that is always key.
Emma: How much do we need?
Todd: When using it therapeutically you need to get it into the right ranges. The ranges, for example if you’re treating skin, is about 3-15 joules. If you want to treat backpain or the brain, then the dose should be anywhere from 20-60 joules. It really comes down to why a person is using it and what’s their goal. For the average person the sauna is the way to go as you get full spectrum light that mimics nature (sunrise/sunset), and you also get the sweat and detox that has so many benefits. However, if someone has Alzheimer’s for example, and they are not likely going to want to sweat unnecessarily in a sauna, (but they should because they probably need to detox as well) ideally they will need a therapeutic dose with a red/NIR lamp (no heat) aimed at the head about 10cm away and the session would last approx. 10-15 minutes. Which leads me onto a real area of interest... A recent Australian study was conducted to see if light therapy could help with Parkinson’s disease. They shone the red light on the brain of a rat, then they wrapped the rats head in aluminium foil to block all the light from penetrating. They then shone the light on the rat’s abdomen and received almost identical results. You don’t need to shine the light on the brain to get brain effects!
Emma: How does that happen?
Todd: Well there’s a concept that exists called remote or indirect photobiomodulation. For example, what we are now finding is that if you have an injury on the right side of your body but shine the light on the left you can
get the same healing effect . There are systemic mechanisms at play, which makes a lot of sense when you consider that sunlight cannot penetrate the skull and get into the deep parts of the brain stem where Parkinson’s is located. Emma: So if the light is not penetrating that deep how is it working?
Emma: So essentially through photobiomodulation the body is producing its own mechanisms and cells to heal itself? You can actually create the conditions from within to heal?
Todd: It’s all to do with cellular communication and to me that’s the most fascinating part. There’s a lot of research now showing it’s the stem cells that circulate through the blood and go to wherever they are needed. These stem cells then by very definition turn into the cell that’s needed to create healing. So, we know the dose is having an effect even though it cannot be felt. All the research is showing that is exactly how it works. Todd: Yes correct. And we know if you treat with stem cell therapy and you are irradiated with infrared light, the effect of the stem cells increases as well. It’s about increasing the energy production within the mitochondria and decreasing inflammation through photobiomodulation. In my opinion the best way to treat is to expose your full body to the light and then let it decide what has to be fixed. Another area of exciting research is the gut microbiome. Early studies are showing that light when applied to the body affects the gut microbiome. The light absorbed gives the cells the right amount of energy and anti-inflammatories. We all know about the gut – brain connection right? And we know for a fact that people with Alzheimer’s and in particular Parkinson’s have an altered gut microbiome. So working with light therapy on how it can affect the brain and gut is a really interesting area of research.
Emma: It all sounds fascinating and I can see how our lack of natural light is impacting many areas of our lives. We’re so lucky that we do have the research and technology to navigate our modern world and protect ourselves with these ‘hacks’ such as infrared light.
Todd: Absolutely. Ultimately, as with many hacks, the thing that makes me happy is it’s just mimicking nature.

step out of the low and into flow... That’s what applied neuroscience-practitioner and founder of The Brain Room, Rob Gronbeck, encourages athletes, students, professionals and everyday people to achieve. When we align ourselves with an activity that challenges us and sets our souls on fire there is a profound effect that takes place within the body known as the ‘Flow State’. Dive in with us as we step out of the everyday humdrum into the exciting world of Flow…
Emma: I saw a photo of a book you posted on Instagram and the caption read “What you find on someone’s coffee table can tell a lot about who they are, how they see themselves, what they aspire to be or want to join”..
Rob: Was that the Stealing Fire book?
Emma: Yes! I had to get an insider on this, so I grabbed myself a copy, and what particularly got me excited was the research on Flow.
Rob: Oh, you went to Flow land!
Emma: I did! and I can so relate to it because when I’m working on Bloom, I get into that flow state where the world seems to fall away, time disappears, and I can work happily for hours in my own realm.
Rob: Well, flow is ultimately a state of being fully immersed in an activity and having a feeling of energised focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process.

When in Flow the body produces these amazing feel good chemicals which are norepinephrine, anandamide, oxytocin, serotonin, dopamine, that drastically shift how we feel. And when we shift how we feel it’s a sweet relief from trauma, burnout, pain, disconnection, and the feeling of not being yourself. Emma: Yes, and I read these chemicals are addictive too, no wonder I get so involved in my projects and can’t put them down.
Emma: What I find most fascinating about the book is the story behind author Steven Kotler and his experience with Flow.
Rob: You could take all the different street drugs together, but you’ll never reach the same enhanced state that the body naturally produces in perfect combination when in Flow. It’s an amazing feeling and I’m so stoked when someone tells me they’ve found something which gives them the flow experience! Rob: He’s certainly got an amazing story on how he tapped into Flow. At the time he was battling Lyme disease and had literally been bed ridden for 3 years and the doctors had all but given up on him. He was on the verge of killing himself, and then a friend showed up one day and dragged him out for a surf.
He had no energy but, in that moment, that nonordinary state (flow) of jumping up on that surfboard, it propelled him into this superhuman experience. So, he went from bed ridden to surfing, that’s a pretty radical shift,
albeit he was in bed for about 15 days afterwards to recover. But by continuing this series of flow states it shifted him out of Lyme disease and brought back his health. Emma: That’s a pretty radical shift, especially for a chronic autoimmune condition.
Rob: Yes, it’s all about changing the channel and getting the brain and body out of a rut. Flow is a non-ordinary state that usually involves radical changes in body, breath, intense focus and anything we can do to ramp up novelty. For Steven, surfing released a whole bunch of neurochemicals that amplified the immune system and reset the nervous system. All the normal stress chemicals such as cortisol and norepinephrine get flushed out during a flow state, and afterwards the nervous system calms down which allows healing to take place.
Emma: So, Flow is about changing the mindset, which given the right conditions, the chemicals released could potentially flood our cells enabling the body to destress and accelerate healing?
Rob: Yes, and that’s what Steven did, he flooded his brain and body with these feel good neurochemicals and boom... how good is that!
Emma: It’s incredible what the human body is capable of. Steven then realised he had tapped into something unprecedented with this ‘flow state’ and founded the Flow Genome Project to continue his research…
Rob: Yes, that’s how the Flow Genome Project began. I trained with Steven in California this year and completed the Flow Genome coaching certification. Steven talks about ‘ecstasis’ or stepping out of yourself and that’s the one of the parts of the triangle we learned from the Flow Genome Project. The second part is ‘catharsis’, that’s healing from emotional trauma or life trauma. Thirdly, ‘communitas’, which is coming together as a group and suffering, working, performing and playing together. Whether its Tough Mudder or the Kokoda trail for example, suffering in particular together as a group helps us to connect with each other, and bond deeply.
Emma: How about discovering your passion and values? I’m sure that plays an important part of finding your Flow?
Rob: Yes, it certainly does. I met a returned serviceman recently and he told me he couldn’t sleep, his mind chatter was all over the place, he was constantly in stress, and then he discovered cycling. He’d ride 120km a day and he realised how much it shifted the way he felt, the endorphins kicked in, his brain switched from thinking about the past or future to just to being in the moment, time would fly, and that was his remedy, that was his elixir. And so, I love it when people say, “I’ve found it, I know what works for me” and I think that’s all part of the journey, finding out what works for you. Because once you find it, whether its surfing like Steven Kotler, cycling or working on Bloom, man it’s a great feeling, and once you’ve got it, it’s addictive!
Emma: Oh completely!
Rob: I find myself playing more and more Tetris these days, it sounds funny but it’s something that I really enjoy, and it’s so addictive and challenging and makes me focus so much. You get better and better but then eventually hit a plateau, and do you give up and look for something new? Or do you stay on the path and eventually break through?
Emma: Great point, that’s another component I read about with Flow, is having that continuous challenge that is kind of within reach, but you need to get out your comfort zone to get there.
Rob: Also, the sheer novelty, as the brain is always predicting what’s going to happen next. If it knows what’s going to happen, then these neurochemicals produced in flow will not show up, because they’re not needed. We only need these neurochemicals for example, when we’re flying down a hill and don’t know where we’re going next. We need every one of these chemicals firing off to survive. So, it’s extremely riveting, our brain creates this superhuman mode and we achieve the challenge and go “Wow that was amazing!” But the other side is if you tap into flow too much and are constantly skimping on your sleep, not eating, not getting sunlight (I’m thinking of young people these days into video games), they’re in flow but what happens to their bodies and brains? So, it’s about working hard and getting in flow, but just like a surfer, when the surfs up they’re out on the waves, but when there’s no surf that’s a good opportunity to have a rest day. A lot of flow optimisation is about finding the balance between taking energetically and restoring, so that’s why sleep is so important too.
Emma: There’s so many different types of Flow. Can you not find rest in your flow state also?
Rob: Flow is different for everyone. Some people believe flow is when there’s a high heart rate and there’s lots of stress going through the body like mountain biking, yet for other people that’s not flow, that’s terror! Flow can be writing and painting. It’s simply about getting into that non-ordinary state of consciousness by putting yourself in a different environment, immersing yourself in an activity you enjoy, breathwork, ice baths, saunas, working out, going to a rave. You can also get into group flow where everything is pumping and amazing. There’s power in group flow which can be activated by music and psychedelics to get you out of your habitual state. All these things are perfect for those who are suffering the torment of just being human, humanity, trauma, of broken relationships, accidents, loss. If you get stuck in that habitual place, these are the things that can get you out.
Emma: How about meditation and visualisation for taking you out of your ordinary state?
Rob: Yes, you can use your imagination and visualisation to take you back to a time when you were happy, meditate on the things you are grateful for, what most fulfils you and lights you up.
Emma: I use it in cold water immersion, as stepping into a cold waterfall can be a bit of a shock to the system. I take myself out of that cold moment and instead visualise myself stepping into a hot tub and sweating it out. For me it’s more of a mental game, training and harnessing thoughts. Emma: It’s a bit of a game tricking the brain, which has taken time and practice to train it. I guess it’s like going to the gym, you’re not going to grow muscles after one session, it takes time and hard work, same as retraining thought patterns and building new habits.
Rob: That’s ecstasis right there! Moving yourself out of yourself and using imagery to change your state and ultimately how you feel.
Rob: I like to recommend a book by James Clear called Atomic Habits. It’s about building healthy positive habits daily. The easiest tip is to place things in your vision to start building those ideal habits and creating rules with consequences if you don’t follow through. One new habit won’t make a huge difference, but by compounding and gradually adding more you can cement these habits into your daily life such as regular exercise, better sleep , better nutrition, surrounding yourself with positive people, checking your breath and also entertaining activities that are stimulating and engaging. You’re right, it’s not something that can be changed overnight, but by using that compounding approach you can easily add new habits and subtract the old habits.
Emma: I like that idea of compounding, changing one little habit at a time, that certainly makes it attainable with more of a chance of sticking to it as well.
Rob: Creating healthy new habits triggers dopamine, which is the feelgood hormone. So, it follows that if you want more dopamine “hits”, then you need to break down those big tasks into small attainable ones that are going to give a positive feel-good reward every time.
Emma: It’s so fascinating how much the brain influences our behaviour and emotions. I’m always intrigued with how people get into their area of expertise, as there’s usually a profound story that has projected them into their field of interest. You’ve got a very deep-seated story of how your interest began.
Rob: Yes, I had a run in with some mental illness. At the age of 17 I was consuming a lot of cannabis, drinking a lot on the weekends and not sleeping much. One night my brain got into a state where I was certain my father was an imposter. I went into my mother and father’s bedroom and started to lay into my father as he was asleep. I wasn’t conscious, I was in this hypnotic drug induced psychosis and my brain just flipped. My poor mum rose to find me punching my father. I eventually realised what I had done, but at the same time I was still having hallucinations, I wasn’t myself at all and that made me realise I had a huge issue. Thankfully I happened to find a couple of books at home - The Power of Positive Thinking and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which was the start of my self-development journey and making changes in my life towards being a happier, heathier person.
Emma: That’s so lucky that you recognised there was a problem and you found that motivation to do something about it.
Rob: That experience has profoundly influenced and shaped my life today.
Emma: And the great thing is you have embraced and utilised that experience to learn more and help others. So, what’s next for The Brain Room?
Rob: I’m always looking to add new evidence-based treatment protocols to my practice and looking for projects that integrate a variety of different modalities and treatment protocols. For example, I’m currently looking at utilising for returned veterans with depression and brain injuries. Combining heat, resonance breathing and community (like a group sweat lodge) this has the potential to vastly improve energy, mood, sleep and overall function of the body. My mission is to continue ways to improve my own performance and embody all aspects of my learning, so that I can then introduce Brain Rooms all over the world!
Emma: Big goals, I love it! And I love that everything you’re learning you’re fully embracing and living that to lead others.
Rob: Thanks Emma, I’ve enjoyed our flow this morning!

He has coached and mentored tens of thousands of people from around the country and believes that everyone is truly gifted, they just need the tools, confidence, clarity and self-belief to find what makes them truly come alive.
Emma: Can you clarify for me what values are? There seems to be a bit of a blurred line between the things we physically love to do and social idealisms such as principles and beliefs.
Michael: Values come from two fields of science which are philosophy and metaphysics. The field of studying value systems is called ‘axiology’. Axiology is based on philosophy and economics which is really about the study of worth. When we look at what we value in society it’s not kindness, integrity, peace and love, as that’s a given, we all want those. The question comes down to, how do we define those social values and make them tangible through our choices and actions?
Emma: So values are physical, tangible things that we prioritise in our lives?
Michael: Yes values are our life’s priorities that allow us to feel fulfilled. These are the things that we attach beliefs, experiences and objects to, and then filter them through our brain. Every person has their own unique set of values and priority order. For example, I’ve got a high value in learning which I call ‘Personal Achievements’. Personal achievement for me is about achieving the most out of my life and helping others to do the same. Now someone else might have a high value in learning too, however they may apply it in a different way, as we each have our own unique value structure and ways of applying it to our life.
We see the world the way we see value in it, so some people might say “money’s not important, family is everything” and what they’re really saying is I have a high value in family and low value in money. Some people will see wealth and opportunity in the world and that’s because they have a high value of money, but they may not have a high value in family or relationships.
Nothing’s good or bad, there’s no right or wrong because all value systems are balanced in the world. We are all trying to find how we can be the most valuable in our society and to ourselves which creates our self-worth through our value system. WHO: MICHAEL JOHNSON (THE MOJO MASTER) | OCCUPATION: TRANSFORMATIONAL EXPERT | AS SPOKEN TO EMMA LODGE
Emma: So our self-worth is linked to knowing our values?
Michael: Yes and what we are finding is because we’re so connected to the internet and social media, we’re now seeing the world in terms of value systems. For example, I might look on Instagram and see that buff guy with a six pack and say “I don’t feel like I’m good enough because I want a six pack like him” Now for all I know behind the scenes that person might have a poor relationship, poor friendships and spend 24/7 thinking about health, researching health, watching exercise & training videos and going to the gym. Then when this person hangs out with his mates all he talks about is gym, exercising and eating. I could implement that structure into my life but I know I’ll feel guilty because I have a different value system; training at the gym isn’t one of my highest values, so I’m never going to be really great at it, and eventually I’ll depreciate myself. Anything that you strive for that’s not congruent with your highest values is going to lead to self-depreciation.
Emma: I can totally understand that. For a while I tried to mould myself into all these different idealisms and gave myself a hard time trying to fit into someone else’s box. It didn’t work for me because I didn’t know who I truly was.
Emma: So ultimately, it’s about discovering who you are as a person, what makes you tick, what brings you joy and what’s true for you?
Low self-worth is created by prioritising other people’s values or by comparing your values to someone else’s values.
Michael:
When someone with low self-worth looks on Instagram, they might see a happy family with amazing kids, and think I’m a bad parent, or see a healthy person and think I’m crap at diet because I don’t eat a clean perfect diet all the time, or I have a crap body because I don’t have a six pack, or I’m not rich. The more they do that, the more they reduce their self-worth. Self-sabotage is basically a direct reflection of a person not prioritising their value system in the right order at any point in time. The goal of life is to build your own greatness and not try and be great for everybody else. When a person finds their values and truly believes their values and starts to live them out, then they will feel their self-worth. Michael: Yes so next question is, do people around you thrive when you’re happy and fulfilled? Or is your job here on this earth to do things for everybody else at your own expense?
Many people feel like they have to be everything to everyone, which comes at a cost to their own happiness and fulfillment. Most people in society are co-dependant on others to feel good, instead of relying on themselves to feel good.
They might try to blame others when they don’t feel good and say, “it’s everybody else it’s not me”, but that’s just taking the responsibility away. I’ve never come across anyone saying that our job on this planet is to make everyone else happy at the expense of ourselves. Our goal is to be fulfilled and inspired doing what we love so we can inspire others to do what they love and appreciate them for who they are. You may get criticised by those who don’t live like that, but you have to decide do you want to live in the 5% of society who are masters of their wealth, health, mindset, relationships, friendships and their life? Or do you want to live with the 95% of society who become reliant on having a relationship in order to gain wealth, they rely on kids in order to look after them when they’re old, they rely on the government or society in order to look after their health who tell them you’re sick so therefore here’s a pill. You must decide where you want a seat in this game. Because if you want to fit in with 95% of people then that’s the picture you’ll be fitting into. If you want to stand out with the 5% it means you’ll probably be criticised and unaccepted by the majority, but then wouldn’t you prefer to have self-dignity, self-worth, selfbelief and self-confidence? Emma: - I know I’m the best version of myself for others when I’m fulfilled doing the things I love. I thrive off it and others can feel it too, it lifts their energy. Reminds me of the airplane oxygen mask analogy - you can’t help others unless you help yourself first.
Michael: Totally, and that makes logical sense.
PAGE 31
Emma: So how important is it to identify values in an intimate relationship?
Michael: I’ll use my relationship as an example. When I did my values, I realised my wife was #6 on my values list. Lucky when I shared this with her, she was savvy enough and said you’re probably lower than that on mine! So, we had a bit of a laugh. But what we both realised is that when we fulfil our highest values we’re actually better together in the relationship, because we’re not narky and frustrated wishing we were doing other things. We each respect that we need time to fulfil our highest values, which then gives us more time to be present together. For example, if your highest value is career and second highest value is wealth creation, third highest is health and fourth is relationship, unless you feel like you’ve worked hard enough during the week in your career, you’ve made enough money and you’ve had time to exercise and look after your health, then chances are you’re going to be thinking about money, working harder, going to the gym and looking after yourself, rather than being present with your partner, even if you’re sitting there on the couch together because you’ll be feeling unfulfilled thinking about something else. So, the job of a relationship is to support one another other’s values in order to gain quality time together.
Emma: So we really need to communicate our values effectively with each other and use that knowledge to work our relationship to its best potential. And it seems like it’s not just identifying values that’s important but having a priority list of them too?
Michael – If you take 10 post boxes numbered from 1 to 10 and ten pieces of mail. You get to decide which post box to put each envelope into. What you’ll find is most people will try to stuff all ten envelopes into the same post box which can only fit one. Now how do you win that game? You don’t. Most people see one value and convince themselves “kids are my highest value” and then “no my partner is my highest value” then “I’m my highest value” and “my health is my highest value” “no career is my highest value because I need to make money” and “money is important to look after the family”. What they’re trying to do is stuff those 10 envelopes in the one post box in #1 position which is being dishonest with themselves and because of that they don’t win anything.
Emma: What about guilt? How do you deal with guilt from the values list? I know I had guilt when I realised the order of my values may not align with expectations.
Michael - The guilt comes from another person’s values, it’s not yours. So, when you feel guilty its not that you’re doing something wrong, it’s that you feel guilty because you feel like you’re doing someone else wrong.
Following your values is the right thing to do, because ultimately that’s how you’ll be the best version of yourself and that’s what people want, to thrive off you.
Emma: I guess an important consideration is when it comes to the end of your life and you’re taking your final breath, how do you want to feel? Do you want to feel fulfilled or full of regret that you ran the treadmill all your life for others? Emma: So in your opinion what is the best way to identify values? I realised after doing a values exercise that I had been surrounded by mine my whole life and the answers were there all along.
Michael: Yes totally.
Michael: We naturally surround ourselves with our values. I have an exercise bike in the loungeroom of my house which I use regularly. The question then becomes why is that important to me and why do I put that in my space? I have an office in my house, why do I have an office in my house? Because business is important to me. I have another room in my house chock a block full of books because teaching, learning and study are important to me. You won’t find any children or kids’ toys in my house because kids aren’t important to me. When I travel the first thing I pack is my computer, why is that important to me? I use it for research, I use it for teaching, and I also use it for business. I also pack my gym gear first before any other clothes because health and fitness are important to me. So, there are many key aspects you can look out for. What’s in your intimate space? What do you spend your money on? How do you spend your time? What inspires you? What energises you? What are the most common apps on your mobile phone and what’s the importance of them? They are the dead giveaways.
Emma: I notice when I surround myself with the things I love and carry out those activities I feel great, I’m energised and my head feels clear.
Michael: That’s because
your body becomes more neurochemically balanced when you live your values, because you’re in a more stable emotional state.
When you look at the neurochemicals in the brain, our thoughts and perceptions trigger our beliefs and our beliefs create stories that normally have meanings attached to them. So, when we trigger those beliefs, stories or meanings we have to get those thoughts out to the physical body through the neurochemical interactions. Our thought processes or perceptions dictate the way that our cellular structures function, so some neurochemicals stimulate and excite whilst others inhibit or slow down. If you perceive the environment around you is stressful then that will trigger a neurochemical response in the body, and out of balance thoughts create out of balance physiology. Now when you live your values you tend to be more balanced in your perceptions and thinking which means you’re more balanced in the way you live and how your body functions, so homeostasis is really just balance. Emma: So values impact both mental and physical wellness? Emma: Identifying values can really have a huge impact on how you lead your life, how you interact with others, how you look and feel, what your environment looks like, there’s a whole flow on effect isn’t there?
Michael: Yes totally.
Michael: We all see the ads and promotions that suggest if you want to be healthy you have to change your health and diet and so on, yes that’s part of the solution, but
the biggest effect I’ve ever seen that has helped people to heal is their own mindset. You won’t outbeat that.
You could eat the most organic, beautiful, luxurious diet but if you’re stressed all the time and create a perception that the world is bad and that people hurt you, then diet is not going to help. Thought processes (the neurochemical response from our thinking) has a greater impact on our physiology than the nutrition we put in our body, yet most people focus on nutrition or they focus on exercise habits or they focus on yoga before they focus on their own thought processes. There are many people who run around saying how important diet is, but take a look at their health and look at their body, if they look tired and old then that is a direct insight into their thought processes. Thought processes are the perceptions that trigger neurochemical responses in our body.
Emma:Wow it just shows you really can’t supress what’s going on inside. Unlocking values is certainly a way of bringing more balance and understanding in life. Thanks Michael.

the next big G. With 5G on the horizon its time to get familiar with what its all about, what this means to you and your family and what we can do to protect ourselves. Here I chat with Laura from Earthing Oz to gain some clarity on the situation and how earthing can balance out the techno world we’re living in.
Emma: It’s such a massive subject but for those who aren’t aware of what EMF’s are, can you please give a background?
Laura: Sure, so in basic terms there is the electromagnetic spectrum that encompasses a wide variety of electromagnetic frequencies called EMF’s that are both natural and man-made. Some we can’t live without such as the earth’s magnetic field and visible light such as sunshine, they are essential to human health. Visible light helps us with our melatonin and circadian rhythms and ultraviolet radiation gives us our Vitamin D, however it’s the man-made frequencies that are posing some health risks. Most people know that ionising EMF’s, the ones that encompass x-rays and radioactive substances can be dangerous, however it’s the non-ionising part of the spectrum which is the low frequency radiation that is a cause for debate. These are the radio waves that emit from mobile phones, Wi-Fi, smart meters etc. Over the last 20 years there has been a massive increase in wireless devices on the market and we’ve become surrounded by this electro smog. Yes technology has brought us a lot of ease and convenience, but our exposure to EMF’s has increased and the concern is what is this doing to our health?
WHO: LAURA GRAHAM | OCCUPATION: EARTHING SPECIALIST | AS SPOKEN TO EMMA LODGE
Emma: True, and it’s now become a necessity for everyday tasks such as banking, communications and work. I even have to use an app to order my daughters sandwich from the school tuck shop! It seems we have no choice, so do we really be concerned?
Laura: All these wireless devices be it your phone, iPad, laptop they all communicate by transmitting radiowaves to connect to a signal to a nearby Wi-Fi router or phone tower. These radio waves are basically a pulsed radiation every few seconds and they’re constant, they’re always there and it’s this intensity of pulsed radiation surrounding us which is of growing concern to scientists. What impact is it having on our immune system, our bodies, or even at a cellular level?
There’s a percentage of our population who are known to be hypersensitive, they have what’s called electro hyposensitivity and these people suffer extreme symptoms from being around radio frequencies or emf’s. They can suffer from fatigue, headaches, nose bleeds, tinnitus, the list goes on. So, should we be concerned? Yes. We know it can have a real impact on people’s health, and for the majority of us it is having some degree of impact. The main concern is those people in our society who are more at risk such as the elderly, pregnant women and children in particular.
Emma: Yes I worry about the children as they’re still growing, their brains are developing and their bodies already have to deal with a lot more environmental stress.
Laura: Certainly children for a start are having lifelong exposure to such high levels of radiation and we don’t yet know what impact that will have, but what we do know is that children’s skulls are thinner and they absorb radiation quicker. They’re still growing, and their cells are reproducing faster so if a cancerous cell is present it could multiply quicker and tumours can develop quicker, so there’s a much graver concern about children using mobile phones and wireless devices. Obviously with pregnant women it’s the effects on her unborn foetus during pregnancy that are of concern.
Emma: It also seems like there’s a lot of conflicing information. I see research papers that warn of the detrimental impact, but then I find another report that says there’s not enough evidence, so no wonder societyisn’t really taking this seriously because we are being told different things, it’s hard to know what to believe..
Emma: There can be so many variables too. We’ve all got different lives, different demands, different interests, living in different areas and different homes, so it must be hard to run a study. Also, if it does impact someone’s health it may present differently as inflammation presents itself in different ways so how can you truly relate that to EMF? I think it must be the load, the way we live today is just overloaded. The phone usage guidelines might say there’s nothing to worry about, but does it consider all the other things we’re loading up on during the day?
Emma: It’s like the precautionary principle has gone out the window!
Laura: Yes its difficult and some of the problems come from the studies themselves, you have to look into who’s funding the study for a start. According to Dr Henry Lai from the University of Washington,
70% of the independently-funded studies showed a biological effect from radio-frequency radiation as opposed to 32% of industry-funded studies.
You really need to look at the test cases as sometimes they may only test the lowest risk people and they might only run the study for 5 years, whereas the risk comes after 10 years. So it’s very hard to navigate, we really need more independent scientific research. Laura: Exactly, there have been a lot of studies, for example in 2015 two hundred independent scientists appealed the UN for some stricter guidelines around exposure to electromagnetic radiation. Some countries such as Sweden and Israel are taking precautionary measures, and certainly schools are looking for hard wired options rather than Wi-Fi.
That’s where we are behind in Australia, our safety standards are 100 to 1000 times worse than those in some of the European countries. We go by the safety standards of a government agency responsible for radiation protection, now those standards are based on the international commission of non-ionising radiations protection (INRP) which were founded in 1995/96 are based on the short term effects of heating from radiation exposure, which is really not applicable to what we are seeing today which is long term exposure to low frequency radiation. There just hasn’t been studies to show it’s safe. Laura: Exactly.
PAGE 35
Emma: And now there’s free Wi-Fi at shopping centres, at the airport, in public spaces.. we really can’t get away from it these days.
Laura: Absolutely and that’s the concern for families. They may hardwire or switch off Wi-Fi at night, avoid getting smart meters, they might do all of these precautionary things yet they have neighbours who will have the Wi-Fi or smart meters and if 5G comes there’s going to be a lot more cell towers around, so potentially we will be surrounded with no choice.
Emma: Yes I was going to ask as I don’t have Wi-Fi in my home but my neighbour does, so I share her internet to run everything, so even if I wanted to switch it off I can’t. We’re surrounded in our neighbourhoods and we all need Wi-Fi. So what can we do?
Laura: All we can do is reduce our exposure where we can, so obviously distance is the key. It is still important to take some easy measures in your own home such as disconnecting your Wi-Fi router at night. It’s such a simple thing to do and get in the habit because it’s emitting in your home while you sleep. Always turn off any devices, don’t have phones charging next to your bed, put every device on flight mode or switch them off at night and keep them out of the bedroom. Avoid using baby monitors, as much as they’re convenient, they’re another way of transmitting EMF’s.
Emma: I was listening to a podcast this morning where they mentioned baby monitors linked to an increase in childhood cancers and illness. Do you believe there could be some links? Emma: I saw a video that showed thermal imaging of a phone being held to the head and how quickly it heats the brain up.
Emma: So they’re covering themselves?
Laura: When we think of health effects from electromagnetic radiation we tend to think more about WiFi and mobile phones but there are other, surprising sources of EMR and a wireless baby monitor is one such example. It could indeed all be linked, so the best thing to do is be as informed and aware as possible.
Laura: And it happens a lot quicker to the younger ones, so that absorption and heat in an adult would almost double for a child in the same amount of time. So the best thing to do is not put your phone to your head whilst talking. Again, there are ways to avoid this such as using the speaker phone or air tube headsets for calls. You can also get anti-radiation cases that will block 99% of radiation. So that’s a very important way you can reduce exposure because we all have mobiles now, and our kids are getting mobiles younger and they need to be educated on 1. the potential harmful effects and 2. how to use it safely and put the phone on airplane mode when not using it. These days mobile phone companies include RF exposure information in their manuals and in their Settings apps explaining how the testing of the phone is carried out and at what distance from the body it was found to be safe. This is usually around 5mm from the body. They also provide advice as to how to reduce exposure to RF (radio frequencies).
Laura: It appears that way. The EMF/mobile phone health debate has been compared many times to the tobacco and asbestos industry examples of the 20th century.
Emma: I was reading that asbestos and tobacco took almost 100 years to indicate it might be harmful, so we really don’t know yet what we’re stepping into.
Laura: That’s the real concern here. The first medical reports linking smoking to lung cancer actually began to appear in the 1920s but it took the best part of the rest of last century to fight the tobacco industry to make the necessary changes to protect public health.
Emma: You mentioned earlier about all the cell towers going up. I spot them everywhere now (although they try to disguise them) and I feel quite concerned, especially the ones going up next to houses. Emma: How far does the radiation frequency transmit? I read it’s about 16km?
Laura: Yes how tragic, and the problem is, they can do it.
Laura - Yes..
but the problem we now face is the rollout of 5G, which uses higher frequencies and shorter wavelengths. These shorter wavelengths are unable to travel as far or go through objects, so instead of having a few larger phone towers around, the 5G network will require thousands of small cell antennas which will potentially be placed on street signs, lamp posts, schools and every street corner. They’re just looking at the empty space on that radio frequency spectrum, so they’ll have free bandwidth to support more devices, more technology and faster download speeds, that’s the reason for 5G. It’s hard for the 3G and 4G networks to keep up with all these emerging technologies and keep the speeds without time lags etc. 5G is going to use the millimetre wave and we’ve heard it could be anywhere from around 24ghz up to 300ghz which we’ve never been exposed to before. It’s very concerning.
Emma: Have there been any trials?
Laura: No, there’s a lot of action groups now for stopping 5G and one of the main concerns is the fact that they haven’t done any of the safety testing and they’re still rolling it out.
Emma: How much progress have they made in Australia?
Laura: I believe it’s coming to most places and certainly 5G networks are being used by Optus and Telstra.
Emma: So it’s already rolled out?
Laura: We know certain towers have already been switched on - mainly in the cities such as Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. Recently we’ve received calls from people who have had no health issues previously, they were happy at work then suddenly began experiencing issues they’ve never had before, such as headaches, ringing in ears, tingling skin and unable to focus. This is a month or two after the 5G towers were switched on. I just think there’s going to be more and more cases where people start to feel the effects.
Emma: So these frequencies, although we cannot see or hear them, they could well be compromising our natural attunement to the planet? Emma: No wonder we’re rushing around these days. I feel like I’m always “on” always buzzing. We’re probably not getting the best recharging sleep anymore either as we’re continually surrounded by this technology. I certainly notice a difference in frequency when I step out of the city and into nature.
Laura: This frequency is not in tune with our bodies at all. It’s causing an immune response and its affecting the function of our cells our tissues our hormones our brain activity, there’s many biological effects from these EMF’s. Laura: Absolutely.
And that’s the thing, our bodies are designed to be in tune with mother nature. The earth has its own frequency and that’s what our bodies really need, they don’t want all these man-made frequencies bombarding and throwing off our serotonin, melatonin and cortisol production.
Once our hormone cycle is messed up that starts to affect everything including sleep. Emma: And people sleep with monitors and sleep trackers on their arm! We’re hooked up 24/7.
Laura: Like I said it’s important to get out in nature when you can and relieve the body of stress, that’s part of the earthing research. The earth is a potent painkiller, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, stress reliever. It’s like a giant battery that circulates the sun with a limitless reservoir of electrons, so its negatively charged. These electrons are replenished by the sun, lightening and the molten core and they vibrate at different frequencies giving our land masses and ocean a negative charge. This charge is what keeps our global life humming in rhythm and balance for everything that lives on the land – the animals, plants, humans they all have a constant electrical connection to the earth and its frequency. Unfortunately we’ve disconnected from this charge because we rarely walk outside barefoot anymore, we mostly live and work above the ground going from home to office, we wear synthetic soled shoes made from plastic rubber that insulate us compared to animal hide that was once used allowing the Earths energy to go into our body.
So, in a sense we’ve lost those important electrical roots which has impacted our health. Inflammation has increased and that’s thought to be part of the reason for the increase in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s. If we simply just earthed ourselves more outdoors this would be amazing for our bodies. The electrons from the earth act like an antioxidant that help combat inflammation as well as maintaining our bioelectrical bodies, our rhythms and hormones. Emma: What if you’re stuck indoors in an office daily?
Laura: In an office situation where you’re surrounded with ambient voltage from computers and printers you can earth yourself at your desk with an earthing product. This will bring your body voltage back down to what it would be if you were stood outside. You can test this with a multimetre.
Emma: So basically you can hack the outdoors!
Laura: Absolutely. There are other simple products like the earth strap that you can put on your shoes for a grounding connection, so when you walk on conductive surfaces e.g. concrete, dirt, grass you’re connected to the Earths energy. This is another way of cheating the earths system and getting those electrons through the body.
Emma: That’s great because our lives don’t always lend themselves to being outdoors but if there’s a way around it through these simple hacks then that’s a bonus. So with grounding do we need to take our shoes off and stand on the grass or is walking in nature sufficient?
Laura: Any bare skin contact with the earth is recommended.
Emma: And its easy as well. Emma: Yes, I’d rather be outdoors than have to take a pill.
Emma: What’s your take home message?
Research has shown that we need 30-40 minutes contact to receive a beneficial charge.
I’ve also found sleeping earthed at night time to be the most effective way of getting benefits because you’re in a resting recuperating state and it’s a long period where your body can uptake those electrons, it’ll even out your circadian levels and lower your cortisol levels so generally people will experience a deeper more refreshing sleep. To me earthing is a preventative medicine and something we really need to incorporate in our lives. Laura: Absolutely and enjoyable, who doesn’t want to be outside in nature? Laura: It literally does transform people’s health. People who are suffering long term injury or pain will notice a huge difference from earthing. All of those inflammatory type illnesses we receive great testimonials and feedback. Electro hypersensitive people will also find that earthing greatly helps them. Laura: Try not to get overwhelmed with fear, we all want to use our devices and they’re not going away soon. I’d suggest considering ways to reduce your family’s exposure and teach your children how to use their technology safely. Get them into good habits from when they’re young and do what you can to spend as much time as possible in nature. www.earthingoz.com.au
