ABOUT ME

MY NAME IS EMMA FIORELLA. I AM A THIRD YEAR AT SYRACUSE, WORKING TOWARDS MY B.ARCH, WITH A MINOR IN ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY. I LIVE IN SPARTA, NEW JERSEY, AND AM CURRENTLY STUDYING ABROAD IN FLORENCE, ITALY. I AM MOST INTERESTED IN HOUSING, AND USING ARCHITECTURE TO LESSEN OUR IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT.

LAST SUMMER I INTERNED AT SOLOMONOFF ARCHITECTURE STUDIO. MY MAIN FOCUS WAS WORKING WITH THE JEWISH MUSEUM CURATOR PREPARING AN EXHIBITION. I GAINED EXPERIENCE IN DRAWING, ON SITE MEASUREMENTS, PRESENTATIONS, AND MUCH MORE.

FALL 2024 - HOUSING STUDIO

SITE - SYRACUSE, NY

THE MAIN FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT IS THE ELEVATED GROUND FLOOR. NORMATIVE SHAPES ARE USED FOR INDOOR PROGRAMS, A DAYCARE AND A BIKE/COFFEE SHOP, SO THAT THE PUBLIC GROUND FLOOR CAN STILL BE UTILIZED IN A COLD SYRACUSE WINTER. AN AMPITHEATER IS ALSO UNDERNEATH THE BUILDING, RESTING AGAINST THE BUILDING SO PEOPLE CAN PROJECT ONTO THE WALL. WITH THE DECONSTRUCTION OF I-81, THE CITY INTENDS TO IMPROVE ALMOND STREET BY ADDING PEDESTRIAN AND BIKE PATHS. THE BUILDING’S GROUND FLOOR RESPONDS TO THIS THROUGH ITS ONE PATH THAT WEAVES UNDERNEATH THE BUILDING, CONNECTING IT TO THE SITE. THE BUILDING’S COLUMNS ARE USED TO CREATE UNIQUE SEATING, AND THE GROUND IS BUILT UP AT CERTAIN MOMENTS AROUND THE SITE TO CREATE AREAS FOR REST OR PLAY. THE GROUND FLOOR INTENDS TO BE A SPACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN EXPLORE, SOCIALIZE, AND RELAX OUTSIDE. ITS GOALS ARE TO BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER AND CREATE AN UPLIFTING NEW ENVIRONMENT FOR BOTH THE BUILDING’S RESIDENTS AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. THE HOUSING IS ON THE SECOND THROUGH SIXTH FLOORS. THE COLLECTIVE HOUSING HAS MANY OF THE SAME GOALS AS THE GROUND FLOOR--A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO BREAK SOCIAL BOUNDARIES AND HAVE A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE OF WHAT IT MEANS TO LIVE IN A COMMUNITY. THIS IDEA IS MAINLY PUSHED THROUGH THE LARGE PUBLIC SPACE ON EACH FLOOR. NO UNIT HAS A KITCHEN, SO THIS SPACE HOLDS KITCHENS, TABLES, COUCHES, AND ANYTHING PEOPLE WISH TO ADD. IN ORDER TO ADD A LEVEL OF PRIVACY, MOVEABLE GLASS WALLS ARE ATTACHED TO THE KITCHENS. THE FAMILY AND CLUSTER UNITS HAVE LIVING AREAS, SO THE SAME MOVEABLE WALL SEPARATES THEIR LIVING ROOM FROM THE PUBLIC SPACE. THIS FORM OF HOUSING STRIVES TO PUSH PEOPLE TOGETHER AND CREATE FRICTION, WHILE STILL ALLOWING FOR A LEVEL OF COMFORT. THE MODELS WERE MADE USING CHIP BOARD, BRISTOL, CONSTRUCTION PAPER, BASSWOOD, ACRYLIC, SPRAY PAINT, DRIED FLOWERS, AND DRYWALL. DRAWINGS WERE MADE USING AUTOCAD, RHINO, ILLUSTRATOR, PHOTOSHOP, AND V-RAY.

DEPICTING ORIGINAL IDEAS/INTENT

EACH UNIT DOUBLES IN SIZE. STUDIO UNITS ARE ON THE SECOND FLOOR, SO CHILDREN LIVING IN FAMILY AND CLUSTER UNITS CAN BE PROTECTED AND NOT EASILY SNEAK IN AND OUT OF THE BUILDING. FAMILY AND CLUSTER UNITS HAVE LIVING ROOMS, WHILE STUDIO UNITS HAVE A SEMI-SHARED OUTDOOR AREA. RESIDENTS HAVE FREEDOM TO POPULATE AND CHANGE THE AREA HOWEVER THEY SEEM FIT, OR AS ADJUSTMENTS ARE NEEDED OVER TIME--THIS IS NOT A STATIC BUILDING.

SPRING 2024 - TECHTONICS STUDIO

SITE - 38-40 DONDAS STREET, TORONTO

BUILT IN 1913, IT IS ASSUMED PARTS OF THE PREVIOUS 2.5 YELLOWSTONE RESIDENCE WAS USED IN THE NEW BUILDING. THE BUILDING USES YELLOW BRICK ON THE LOWER LEVELS, AND RED BRICK ON THE NEWER. AROUND THE SITE, THERE ARE RESTAURANTS, A SHOPPING CENTER, A RECORD STORE, AND BUILDINGS FOR A COLLEGE. HOWEVER, THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST UNSAFE LOTS IN TORONTO.

I CHOSE TO CALL OUT THE UNIQUE TRIANGULAR SHAPE OF THE SITE IN THE ADDITION. I WANTED TO ADD SOMETHING NEW, WITHOUT TAKING AWAY FROM THE ORIGINAL BUILDING, WHICH LED TO CREATING AN ARCHWAY UNDERNEATH THAT ALLOWS THE ORIGINAL FACADE TO STILL BE SEEN. THE ORIGINAL BRICK WAS STRIPPED DOWN OF ITS WHITE PAINT, AND PAINTED OVER WITH RED. THE ORIGINAL BUILDING WAS COMPLETELY LEFT THE SAME EXCEPT FOR CHANGES IN INTERIOR WALLS. THE ADDITION IS MADE WITH CMU BLOCKS ALSO PAINTED RED TO MATCH. THE WINDOWS ON THE ADDITION MATCH THOSE OF ORIGINAL WITH THE CURVE OF THE ADDITION’S FACADE MATCHING THAT OF THE ORIGINAL CURVE. AND THE CURVE IN THE ADDITION’S FACADE MATCHES THAT OF THE CURVE IN THE ORIGINAL’S. THE PROGRAM IS A CERAMIC ART STUDIO AND EXHIBITION SPACE, WITH THE EXHIBIT BEING THE ENTIRE ADDITION. THE PROGRAM IS CALLED OUT IN THE UNDERSIDE OF THE ARCH, MADE OF MOSAIC TILES. THE MODEL WAS MADE USING CHIP BOARD, CARDBPOARD, BRISTOL, BASSWOOD, RED POWDER, AND SMALL CERAMIC TILES. DRAWINGS WERE MADE USING RHINO AND ILLUSTRATOR.

FALL 2023 - LANDSCAPE STUDIO

SITE - CLAY, NY

A PORTION OF THE FUTURE MICRON SITE OF CLAY, NY, WAS USED TO CREATE A COMMUNITY CENTER. INSPIRED BY THE RIVER BIRCH TREE AND WATER FROM MICRON, I CHOSE TO CREATE A FARM WITH AN EDUCATION CENTER. THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM TAKES SOME OF THE 2 BILLION GALLONS OF WATER MICRON RECEIVES PER DAY TO FUEL THE FARMS. THE EDUCATION CENTER ALLOWS FOR PEOPLE TO COME AND LEARN ABOUT FARMING AND IRRIGATION. THE SITE ALSO ACTS AS A SPACE FOR GATHERING, WITH FOOD BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER. FOOD IS AT THE CENTER OF THE DESIGN, WITH A DINING HALL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EDUCATION CENTER. THE MODEL WAS MADE USING ACRYLIC, BASSWOOD, AND CHIP BOARD. THE SITE MODEL WAS MADE AS A STUDIO USING CLAY, SAND, AND PLANTS. DRAWINGS WERE MADE USING RHINO AND ILLUSTRATOR, AND BY HAND.

THE PROJECT BEGAN WITH CHOOSING A PLANT NATIVE TO THE SITE. I CHOSE A RIVER BIRCH TREE BECAUSE I KNEW I WANTED TO INCLUDE WATER IN SOME WAY AND KNEW THE SHADE UNDER A TREE WOULD GIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MOMENTS DEDICATED TO PUBLIC GATHERING SPACE. PICTURED HERE ARE HAND SKETCHES TO A RTICULATE THE RESEARCH ABOUT THE TREE BEFORE BEGINNING DESIGN WORK.

FALL 2024 - SYSTEMS

SITE - YAKUTSK, RUSSIA

THIS WAS A GROUP PROJECT FOR SYSTEMS CLASS TO MAKE A SAUNA IN A COLD CLIMATE, WHILE EXPLORING PASSIVE BUILDING STRATEGIES. THE GROUP WAS CHALLENGED WITH THE COLD SITE OF YAKUTSK, AND TO USE THE MATERIAL STRAWBALE. WE CHOSE TO USE THE STRAWBALE AS INSULATION. WE ALSO UTILIZED SEVERAL PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES, WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON UTILIZING SUNLIGHT TO HEAT THE BUILDING. PASSIVE STRATEGIES INCLUDE: DIRECT GAIN, NIGHT FLUSH VENTILATION, STACK VENTILATION, AND A TROMBE WALL. THE DESIGN WAS EQUALLY DONE BY EACH GROUP MEMBER; DRAWINGS BY MYSELF, AND GROUP MEMBERS LAUREN MARTINEZ AND JENNA ABIHABIB ARE FEATURED. THE SITE MODEL WAS MADE USING LASER CUT ACRYLIC AND WHITE PAPER FOR THE BUILDING. THE CHUNK MODEL WAS MADE USING PAPER, FOAM, WOOD, ACRYLIC, AND MINATURE HAY. DRAWINGS WERE MADE USING RHINO, ILLUSTRATOR, AND V-RAY.

SPRING 2023 - HOSTEL

SITE - SYRACUSE, NY

THIS HOSTEL WAS DESIGNED FOR DOWNTOWN SYRACUSE. THE GOAL WAS TO MELD PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACES AND OUTDOOR AND INDOOR. THIS WAS DONE BY CREATING A LARGE OPEN PATIO THAT LEADS INTO A FULLY PUBLIC GROUND FLOOR WHICH HAS OPENINGS INSTEAD OF DOORS. THIS CREATES A HYBRID AREA WHERE YOU ARE NOT FULLY INSIDE OR OUTSIDE. A PUBLIC LIBRARY IS ALSO INCLUDED, WHICH LEADS TO A ROOF COURTYARD WHICH ANYONE CAN ACCESS AND ENJOY NATURE. BRICK WAS CHOSEN TO MATCH THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS. THE CONCRETE GROUND LEVEL DISPLAYS A DIVIDE BETWEEN WHAT IS PUBLIC AND HOUSING. THE CONCRETE STAIRCASE DISPLAYS THE CONNECTION OF THE PUBLIC THROUGHOUT THE HOUSING IN THE MIDDLE, TO REACH TO THE PUBLIC ROOF. THE STAIRCASE BRINGS LIFE TO THE PRIVATE PROGRAMS BUILD AROUND IT, SO THE BUILDING ACTS ALMOST LIKE A BEE HIVE WITH LOTS OF ACTIVITY. THE MODEL WAS MADE USING LASER CUT CHIP BOARD, CASTED CONCRETE, AND SPRAY PAINT. DRAWINGS WERE MADE USING RHINO, ILLUSTRATOR, VRAY, AND PHOTOSHOP

BRIEFLY DISPLAYED ARE OTHER ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL WORKS WHILE STUDYING AT SYRACUSE AND DURING MY PREVIOUS INTERNSHIP. IN SCHOOL A GREAT DEAL OF TIME IS DEVOTED TO EXPLORATIONS, WHETHER THAT IS BUILDING PROJECTS IN A SHORTER TIME FRAME, CASE STUDIES, EXPLORING A WAY OF THINKING, VERB, OR TECTONIC LANGUAGE THROUGH MODELING. THIS HAS TAUGHT ME TO “THROW” MY IDEAS INTO A MODEL AND LEARN BY TESTING IDEAS IN SEVERAL ITERATIONS.
