For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen.
MATTHEW
28:19-20
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all
The words flow quickly, by now engrained in my memory. Since October, this verse above has flashed on my screen at 11:36a every day to remind me to come before the One that is first in my life. I spend time praying about my priorities and calling. My wife embraced this challenge with me, then our entire staff followed suit.
What has happened to us through this simple act of discipline and prayer has been nothing short of life-changing. Each day, we have been individually and collectively reminded to offer our first and best to Him, participating in the expansion of His Kingdom. To be on this mission together has bonded, challenged, and changed us.
things. To Him be glory forever. Amen. - Romans 11:36
As a church, we are entering into a two-year discipleship journey to live out this verse. In response to God’s great generosity to us, knowing that everything we are and have comes from Him, we owe everything to Him.
This season in our church will be like no other. For almost a hundred years, our church has brought hope to Chicagoland. The last several years, we’ve seen remarkable growth and expansion, with thousands attending weekly across our five campuses. Plus, we celebrate hundreds of new believers every year.
Now we are looking forward to what’s next. We know that the winds of God are always blowing, but it is up to us to hoist the sail. These next few months are about us doing our part, putting the sail up so that God will blow us where and how far He wants us to go.
Please take this initiative seriously and let’s all do this together. Read through the material in this book. Join one of the small group studies. Schedule yourself to be in church each weekend. In this new series, we’ll flesh out principles that will grow our faith, perhaps more than any other time in our lives.
What we do with this opportunity in front of us is a big deal. In fact, it could be one of the most impactful seasons for you and for us as a church. Because this church is not my church. This is Jesus’ church, and He has called us to be in it. Let’s all be His church!
So let’s hoist the sail together and ask the Lord to blow us where He wants us.
Remember, this is not about us, it’s about Him.

OUR GOALS
IT’S NOTHING NEW
We have an amazing heritage, but yesterday is behind us. The question becomes, “How will God’s people respond today?” Will we give everything we are and have to invest in the lost, the broken? Will we follow the lead of our spiritual ancestors? Or are we indifferent to the plight of those around us, unable or unwilling to do the work necessary to reach those who need the gospel more than anything?
We can’t be a complacent church. A church that is satisfied with the status quo. We aim to move beyond what is familiar and comfortable, for the sake of those who need to know Jesus.
How? What does God have in store for The Bridge? Only God really knows. But we’ve been handed the baton. We’re not doing anything new.
It’s just our turn now.
PRIMARY GOAL
100% ENGAGEMENT
Our goal is that every person who calls The Bridge home would declare that Jesus is before all things in their lives. That we would give Him our first and best. That we would trust Him wherever He takes us. That 100% of us as a church family would continue deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ in three ways:
SURRENDER | FAITH | GENEROSITY
SECONDARY GOAL
$20 MILLION OVER 2 YEARS
As we hoist the sail, putting God before all things in our lives, we believe He has identified three areas to focus our kingdom impact. We are trusting Him to move through each of us at The Bridge to raise $20 million over the next two years to accomplish the vision He has given us.
FAMILY $11.5 MILLION
The power plant of a church is its operations. We will continue to invest in the ongoing ministries of the church, including staff, facilities, and ministries. We will pour into our kids and students, knowing they are the future. Our community groups, support groups, and classes will meet adults where they’re at, and propel them foward in their faith. Every weekend, we will gather across all of our locations and lift high the name of Jesus in worship. Plus our teaching will continue to be powerful and practical. Our family has grown quite large in recent years and we will work hard to love and serve each person that calls The Bridge home.
FUTURE Campus Renovations
$7 MILLION
The Bridge has the unique opportunity and responsibility to impact many different communities across Chicagoland. Here is where we get our Hoist the Sail theme from. By setting aside funds, it is hoisting our sail to see what opportunities God brings us. It’s having resources available for us to take advantage of as they come. This is getting ahead of the game, instead of scrambling when something comes along.
Our current locations are reaching 3,000 people per weekend. While our Family portion will maintain them, we want to continue to improve them. We have a few projects we hope to accomplish, including renovating our Des Plaines auditorium, updating our Randhurst lobby, and developing space at Portage Park.
Camp Retreat Center
The Woods is our beautiful, 125+ acre camp in Fredonia, Wisconsin. It has been a huge blessing to our kids and students. But we want to make it available for discipleship for the whole congregation. Our goal is to build a retreat center with hotellike accommodations. A place with individual rooms, where adults can stay comfortably.
We see powerful retreats for small groups, couples, parents, singles, and retirees. Plus, we would use it to bless other churches through pastor retreats/training, counseling training and more.
We’ve been given these beautiful grounds showcasing God’s creation. Let’s maximize it for His glory for the whole church!
New Campuses & Expansions
Our desire to reach new communities will be the lion’s share of Future. So many around us are in need of a faithful and aggressive gospel preaching church. This is our priority #1 — getting the message of Jesus to as many places and people as we can.
Our first targeted area is Palatine. Our Randhurst campus is full and needs to multiply. We believe a move to the northwest is the direction God is leading us. But we will literally hoist our sail and allow Him to guide us to our next place or places. All four locations are growing at a fast rate and will need to expand in the years ahead.
We will also look at ways to expand our current campuses. Randhurst has the potential for a balcony and expanded parking. As God attracts the lost, we will pursue every avenue to accommodate the people He brings us.
$1.5 MILLION
We have the tremendous privilege to make a significant impact outside our walls and will increase the amount we put toward this calling. We want to reach the world with the gospel through our strategic partners, biblical counseling, daily radio, and expanded local outreach.
Increase Giving to Strategic Partners
We love our eighteen partners around the world! They are doing amazing work, preaching the gospel in countless cities and countries. We will increase our giving to our partners, including Just One International in Honduras. The work being done by Just One will forever change the landscape of that country. We hope to invest more financially, as well as increase our mission trips to Honduras.
There is a great need for counseling in our communities. The mental health crisis is at an all time high. Our goal is to become a church that offers free counseling to those around us. We’ll train dozens of counselors and reach hundreds of people. This will become a primary way people discover our church and the gospel. It will take additional staff and volunteers, but is worth whatever effort it takes to reach many.
Sunday Radio Becomes Daily Biblical Counseling Mecca
We have seen an impact in our church from Junior being on Moody every Sunday morning, but we know being on daily would multiply our reach tenfold. Junior has a unique gift as a writer and communicator. And the potential impact is more than most realize. Moody says that 60% of its listeners don’t attend church, meaning this is truly an outreach. As we expand into new areas, radio will serve as as a partner to our growth.
Expand Local Community Outreach
We have been doing great work in our area for many years, through our Grocery Day, Cars Ministry, Diaper Program, and more. Plus we’ve loved working alongside our partner, Higher Up Ministries. But there is much more to be done! We want to grow our local outreach to include ministries to the homeless and the hurting. We know God is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Further joining Him in that work is a big part of our future.
Add Outreach Director
As you can see, we have many goals in Far and much work needs to be done. Our goals need a leader! Someone to take the lead and drive us forward. This is no small task. Bringing on an Outreach Director will help make these dreams a reality. Our entire church will continue to be part of life change in Chicagoland and around the world...but in a greater way than ever before. We can’t wait to see what God does!
GENEROSITY JOURNEY
This tool is designed to help you move money from being an idol to being an avenue to build God’s Kingdom.
Each step of the journey represents growth in a lifestyle of generosity and sacrifice.
Which step are you on? Will you take the next step?
An INITIAL GIVER is someone who decides to give for the first time, out of a response to God’s Word about giving. This is someone who decides to give something and trust God and the leaders of the Church with this gift.
A CONSISTENT GIVER decides to give on a consistent basis to exercise the discipline of giving as a disciple of Jesus. Often, this giver decides to make their gift an online recurring gift and will be learning the joy of consistency. Non-online givers can be consistent givers as well, of course; it just requires more discipline. They experience the joy of excelling in this grace of giving.
An INTENTIONAL
GIVER
is someone who thinks about their giving in relation to their other financial priorities. Specifically, they consistently tithe, giving a tenth of their income to the local church, regardless of their circumstances (Malachi 3:10). This giver starts to make their giving an intentional choice, prioritizing it in relation to other things on which they spend their money.
A SURRENDERED GIVER
is someone who recognizes the power of the gospel and is surrendered to honoring God with 100% of their resources as a result.
A Surrendered Giver is someone who gives in a way that changes them, in a way that reflects that their giving is governing their spending/ saving, rather than their spending/saving governing their giving.
A Surrendered Giver isn’t just concerned with what they ARE giving but is more concerned with what they’re NOT giving and why, and they seek to honor God with ALL He has given them, whether that means direct monetary giving or a God-honoring use of an existing resource.
An ETERNAL GIVER
is someone who is thinking about the longer tail of generosity rather than just the shorter term of monthto-month generosity or even year-to-year. An Eternal Giver makes decisions in the short term that have longerterm effects as it relates to their generosity capacity. They think of what home they buy, what car they purchase, how much savings they choose to keep, all in relation to their generosity capacity. An Eternal Giver is driven by the things of eternity, putting their hope in God and not in the things of this earth.
WHAT IS A “ONE FUND” INITIATIVE?
You may have been a part of church-giving initiatives in the past during which you were asked to give a second gift “above and beyond” your usual gifts to make special initiatives like new buildings and new ministries possible.
Normally, you gave that gift to a “Building Fund” and you also continued to give offerings to the “General Fund.” At The Bridge, we believe that it is all one mission that we’re on – a journey for all people to discover and deepen a relationship with Jesus Christ. So we want to encourage all of us to unleash our generosity towards that mission.
The Hoist The Sail initiative will last two years. During those two years, every gift given to The Bridge will be used both to continue our ongoing ministries and to invest in the vision God has given us for the future. In those two years, every gift that is given will go to the three key components of Hoist The Sail: Family, Future, and Far.
TWO-YEAR GIVING CHART
As you pray and discern how God would ask you to give during this time, use this gift chart as a discipleship tool. Let it be something that inspires and challenges you toward greater generosity for Kingdom impact as He works in and through you.
COMMITMENT CARD
We’ve included a copy in this book so you can begin to pray about your commitment and what that will mean for your journey with God over these next two years. Please take time to think and pray through this, and then we will provide you with a new hard copy on Commitment Weekend, Apr 5/6.
WHAT’S NEXT?
We’re asking you to join us on a spiritual journey with God, to take the largest step of generosity you’ve ever taken, as we move together to take the largest step of faith we’ve ever taken.
OUR PRIMARY GOAL IS 100% ENGAGEMENT.
These next six weeks will be an incredible time as a church. We will Pray, Give, Engage, and Lead. Together we will Hoist The Sail and God will blow us where He wills.
PRAY GIVE ENGAGE LEAD
Pray that God would multiply our efforts to make disciples and make an impact for the Kingdom in such a time as this. Pray that He would do the impossible.
Ask God to begin to reveal to you what it looks like to give in a way that changes you, and take whatever bold steps are required to see it through.
Fully commit to what God wants to do in you and through you during this season in our church. Devote the next season to letting God develop commitment, vision and generosity in your life. Come to church, answer the discussion questions, join the events, and participate in a small group or short-term group every week.
Own the Hoist The Sail vision and become an ambassador for it within your spheres of influence. Celebrate what God is doing in the lives of others at The Bridge. Encourage them to engage fully and cheer them on as they take steps of faith and commitment.
FAQ’S
Our capital campaigns have been good. Why get rid of them?
Our capital campaigns have been valuable and effective. We want to take the value of these proven campaigns and utilize their effectiveness in a consistent way, by asking the entire congregation to engage in a One Fund Initiative for all of our church projects. In a sense, rather than getting rid of capital campaigns, we will be doing one for everything we do as a church, every few years. That way, every member is an active participant in everything we do, and every dollar we give will also go to everything we do.
This will also enable us to be financially ready for where God leads us, rather than scrambling at the last minute when He reveals where He is moving us.
Under the old system of separating the general fund from special projects, we would need a capital campaign for every campus launch, every new construction project, and every renovation. That is not sustainable in a large and growing multi-campus ministry.
Hoist The Sail allows us to bring in more capital than we are spending, demonstrating to financial institutions that our income exceeds our spending, enabling us to handle a mortgage, as well as having the cash on hand for an adequate down payment.
All these things in the vision...what is the time frame for completion?
We don’t know what God is going to do or when He’s going to do it. That’s the point of Hoist The Sail: it’s a step of faith — getting ready ahead of time for what God will do, and putting ourselves in position to go when He opens the door.
We may not have all this done in two years (we hope so!). But if not, we’ll be ready for what He opens up, when He opens it up. It’s presenting ourselves fully to God to act when He wants to. It’ll be faith on our end to be ready to go!
So we will no longer be asked to give over and above our regular giving? Not for the duration of these next two years of budget, and probably after that as well. Once we commit to our two-year giving, that becomes our new regular giving and we will not ask for money to be given over and above that.
Who came up with this vision? What was the process?
This was a team effort that involved prayer and conversation among our executive staff, some of our pastors, and our elders. It has been several months in the making. There was a prayer stage, a brainstorming stage, more prayer, then final planning. The elders joined us in going through the vision and approving the final proposal.
The “one fund” concept was born out of an internal struggle our executive team felt with playing from behind, motivating us to play from the front. We learned from a few other credible churches of similar size that this was an effective way to sustain the growth God brings our way.
What if we don’t get the $20 million committed?
We’ve always been a church that lives within our means. We will only embark on those projects that have adequate funding. If we fall short of the $20 million goal, we will make determinations of priority based on what is necessary and then what will be most fruitful.
What if more than $20 million is committed?
Any amount above $20 million will be designated to FUTURE, as this enables us to focus on Jesus’ Great Commission. Of course, with the growth of the church, some increase will also need to support the FAMILY portion, which funds the ministry of the church.
What happens in year three?
In year three, we plan to set our budget based on the giving and needs of year two, using the same categories and percentages as presented in this initiative. We also plan to enter into a new One Fund Initiative that year to subsequently fund the following two years. We believe this is our new best way forward.
Why the retreat center?
We’ve been given a beautiful camp that has been a huge blessing to our kids and student ministries. But we believe God wants this facility to be available for spiritual growth and discipleship for the entire congregation. We don’t think camp is just for kids. We want camp for the whole church!
For most adults, comfortable housing is the issue. A retreat center will be a huge opportunity for our small groups (and groups of small groups) to schedule intense study times in God’s beautiful creation. There is something about getting away into a natural setting that enables focused spiritual growth. It works for kids, but it also works for adults.
We also believe this will enable us to bless other churches and the broader Body of Christ by hosting learning retreats and conferences, targeting singles, specific ministry applications, Christian leaders, etc.
Will The Woods be able to use the retreat center?
Bear in mind, while we operate The Bridge’s budget and The Woods’ budget separately, it is all under the responsibility of our one elder board. So we are responsible for all of it, church and camp. But we believe it is wise to keep finances separate.
The retreat center would be available for camp use, particularly when housing needs are high, such as during summer camp. We will make financial arrangements for camp income to then pay for the retreat center use.
Do you have any prospects on our Palatine location?
We wish! But we believe God is waiting for our next step of faith. That is why we are hoisting the sail!
Would we go anywhere else?
Yes! We are open to God’s movement. Again, that is why we are hoisting the sail.
For The Bridge North Shore — are we looking for a permanent facility?
We have no plans to move. Our Christian Heritage Academy accommodation is working well for us. But again, God may bring along an opportunity and if He moves, we’ll follow!
Why is FAR such a small amount compared to the rest?
$1.5 million is a lot of money, not a small amount. And it’s a 65% increase from what we are doing now. We believe our first mission field is our Jerusalem, then Judea, Samaria, and the rest of the world. We have not waited to expand our reach to the rest of the world, and will continue to increase that support. But our first concern needs to be our Jerusalem.
Also bear in mind that for the ministries in FAR, all of the building costs, office admin costs, and much of the staffing are absorbed in the other parts of the budget, allowing for this amount to be concentrated. But those costs are real.
Can our leaders handle this kind of growth without pride getting in the way?
The more God does in us and through us, the bigger a target we become. We have a spiritual enemy who wants to kill, steal, and destroy. And we recognize that the heart is an idol factory. The minute we change our focus from, “Look what God is doing in us,” to “Look what we are doing for God,” is the moment we will be in trouble.
But the answer is not, “We better not do this because it could lead to pride.” That’s the guy who buried his talent in the sand! The answer is...let’s pray like crazy as we follow the Lord’s lead, do everything He tells us to do, and keep watch over ourselves because the enemy desires to kill, steal, and destroy.
And this is why we ask you to pray. Pray for our elders, our pastors, our staff, and also for you. Pray that none of us, including you, will develop destructive attitudes. Pray for our unity and love for each other. And pray that we stay close to Jesus, never getting ahead of Him, and never lagging behind Him.
What if we can’t keep our commitment?
The commitments we make will not be contracts. We know that life changes, and sometimes throws us curveballs. We should all do our best to keep our commitments, but we are also aware that sometimes circumstances can change drastically, getting in the way of our ability to do what we would like to do.
Who will see/track the commitments and giving?
That will not change. We have an entire Finance Committee that oversees all of our finances, that is also overseen by the elders. Our financial secretary tracks the details, under the care of our Business Pastor and the rest of the Finance Committee.
DEVOTIONAL GUIDE
WEEK ONE
2 Corinthians 8:1-8
We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. But as you excel in everything— in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also. I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.

WEEK TWO
2 Corinthians 8:9-15
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich. And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it. So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.

2 Corinthians 8:16-24
But thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same earnest care I have for you. For he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is going to you of his own accord. With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the churches for his preaching of the gospel. And not only that, but he has been appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this act of grace that is being ministered by us, for the glory of the Lord Himself and to show our good will. We take this course so that no one should blame us about this generous gift that is being administered by us, for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of man. And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest than ever because of his great confidence in you. As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker for your benefit. And as for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ. So give proof before the churches of your love and of our boasting about you to these men.

WEEK FOUR
2 Corinthians 9:1-5
Now it is superfluous for me to write to you about the ministry for the saints, for I know your readiness, of which I boast about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready since last year. And your zeal has stirred up most of them. But I am sending the brothers so that our boasting about you may not prove empty in this matter, so that you may be ready, as I said you would be. Otherwise, if some Macedonians come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—for being so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the gift you have promised, so that it may be ready as a willing gift, not as an exaction.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
