Bersama Senior Living Facility This project is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia The client, Zoirós Frontída, an American corporation with familial roots in Greece, is looking to expand their healthcare market worldwide. Currently, Zoirós Frontída (ZF) specializes in rehabilitation care and accompanying short-term skilled nursing; however, ZF is interested in entering into the international market and creating facilities that combine their expertise in rehabilitation care and skilled nursing with assisted living. Zoirós Frontída’s marketing department believes there is a need for this level of care in urban areas—a market sector they have not previously explored.

Zoirós Frontída is aware that their current architectural plans, which typically include one- to three-story facilities in suburban areas on larger tracts of land, will not be financially viable in an urban environment. They are, therefore, working with an architect to create a smaller building footprint of approximately 5000 sq. ft. per floor, but one that is 12–14 stories tall, with window wall construction and a central elevator core. They believe this type of plan will better fit an urban setting.

Site Analysis NORTH VIEW

Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia and is located in west-central peninsular (West) Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 by Raja Abdullah, a member of the Selangor royal family who was the representative of the Yam Tuan who administered Klang. This city was built by 87 Chinese tin miners who ran up the Klang River and set up a village at the river’s muddy confluence, which also gave the name of the city ‘ Kuala Lumpur ‘ which means ‘muddy confluence’.

Malaysia is a multicultural society. The main ethnic groups are the native Malays as well as a large population of Chinese, and Indians. The traditional Malay people speak Bahasa Malaysia, which roots to an Austronesian language. The Orang Asli or original people are located in the Peninsular region and have some different groups with their own language and cultural traditions. Malaysia’s official religion is Islam and 60% of the population are Muslims. The country also has Hindu and Buddhist population.

The combination of all these different ethnic groups in Malaysia makes it one of the most cosmopolitan places on earth. It helps maintain so many relationships with Indonesian, archipelago, the Islamic world, India, China, and Europe. Which makes it easy for the Malaysians to exchange ideas and techniques with the rest of the world, and have an influence in global affairs.

Concept INCLUSIVITY Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia and is one of the most multicultural cities, it’s known for its beaches, rainforests and mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European cultural influences. This is because Kuala Lumpur has always been the city of immigrants and continues to do so. By seeing all the different religions you can come across in just one city, inspired me of the concept of inclusivity.

Design Concept Biophilia a desire or tendency to commune with nature The Urban Cowboy Lodge was inspired by “A” frame architecture. Its off the grid structure pulls inspiration from biophilic design. In order to be sustainable and fit the different environment and ecosystems around the world, we utilize organic upholstery from recycled scraps and second-hand materials that can be sourced locally depending on where the structure is located.

With this structure we are looking to connect the cowboy adventures to the environments in order to ehance the journey.

Floor Plans Taking the traditional “A” frame design and slanting one side to create a natural ramp helped us to create a connection with the vehicle and architecture. The ramp acts as a dock for the Urban Cowboy’s ride. The dock opens up to the second floor, which creates a more private space for the Urban Cowboy to rest. This docking area also adds openings for hot and cold airflow for ventilation. The lodge is also able to harvest energy from the sun path during the day. The lodge faces the south and takes advantage of the abundance of natural light found throughout the Urban Cowboy’s journey.

Residential Design Project This project is located in San Francisco, California The designer is to design a classical style home that reflects careful proportions and architectural features that are similar of the classical period. Will be designing the foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen, study, and master suite.

Design Concept The concept for this home is to design a space that is family friendly, while also incorporating the customer’s love for classical design. The home was originally designed

by Edgar Mathews who was inspired by the Art & Crafts movement, and it tends to draw on natural materials with earthy colors such as deep greens, browns and reds.

Gold plastered walls that illuminate the space and arched doorways add a classical elegant look while also creating an inviting space. The living room has beautiful features such as wall trims and floor-to-ceiling built-ins that bring style, functional storage and personality to the space. Bench seating under the windows allowing to put away the kids’ toys so that the space is clutter free.

The dining room also feature classical elements such as green wall paint, green velvet upholstery and a deep brown wood dining table.

The kitchen has black cabinets with gold accents and marble countertops, as well as floor to ceiling cabinets with open shelving. The breakfast nook features additional built-in countertops and shelving unit as well as a lower seating counter-top section for the kids.

The bathroom is minimal but chic, with ceramic tiles on the walls as the focal point, white cabinetry and gold accents.

A Shoji (room divider) featured in the master bedroom is the classical design element of this project and is reminiscent of the customer’s Chinese roots.

Site Analysis The building was built in 1904 and designed by Edgar Mathews. The style was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which is a syle that was created by the industrialization during the 19th century. This style focuses on the craftsmanship and high quality materials with some decorative elements seen in the Victorian era. It has exposed beams and posts, and is drawn to natural materials with earthy colors such as deep greens, browns, and reds. As you can see in the images the architects buildings often had inviting entry porches, and low brick walls surrounding using clinker bricks.

National Geographic Headquaters The National Geographic Society project is a Mission Revival style building located in the Presidio district of San Francisco that will house their West Coast corporate offices. The building has two stories, with a total interior building area of 6,600 square-feet per floor. The first floor includes public spaces with a lobby, a retail store, a café with a small kitchen and the exhibition hall. The second floor includes private offices, a reception area, a small meeting room, a larger conference room, a copy/print room, and a coffee kitchenette.

Demographics

History

The total population of the Presidio neighborhood is 4,226, with about 45.96% male population and 54.04% Female population. Most of the residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher. This neighborhood has one of the highest incomes in San Francisco with an average of 200k. Most of the residents are US citizens and are white collar workers, with an age average of 24 - 44 years old. There are a total of 1,293 households in the Presidio, with around 3 members per household.

37% of household have children and 62% of household are without children. Since this location does not have the best public transportation, the most common mean of transportation in the Presidio is by car. About 712 of the residents are commuting by bus and about 209 residents prefer to bike.

The Presidio is the oldest Army installation in the American West and one of the longest-garrisoned post in the country. The Spanish arrived in 1776 to establish their military base, before it fell under Mexican rule for 24 years. And then in 1846, the US Army took control. During the Mexican-American war, that took place in 1847, New York volunteers occupied the Presidios adobes which added 147 years of growth as a major U.S. Army Post. In order to protect the Bay entrance, engineers built Fort Point, which is a four-tiered brick and granite fort designed to hold 126 large cannons. In 1861, when the Civil War began, it was brought to attention how important the military significance of San Francisco harbor is to the Union. This then led to the first major program of construction and expansion of the Presidio since it was now acquired by the United States. The Presidio continued to expand from the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s. By the 1890s the Presidio was not a frontier outpost but now a major military installation and a base for American expansion into the Pacific.

The war with Spain in 1898 as well as the Philippine-American War from 1899 to 1902, also played a huge role in the expansion of the Presidio. Thousands of troops camped out in tents awaiting for shipment to the Philippines including all four African-American regiments known as the “Buffalo Soldiers”. With a lot of soldiers returning sick and wounded, they were being treated at the Army’s first permanent general hospital, Presidio Army General Hospital.

By 1905, there were twelve coastal defense batteries of reinforced concrete that were built along the San Francisco Headlands. Once World War I started, General Pershing became the Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe. In the 1920s, Crissy Army Airfield was established to assist in harbor defense. Once the Golden Gate Bridge was built in 1933 to 1937, it increased the public use of the Presidio.

Building Analysis

This location gets a lot of sunlight throughout the day, with winds coming from the Bay (North/West). This property has a lot of open space with views of the ocean and The Golden Gate Bridge. The site is accessible with vehicles and pedestrians. Close access to the freeway and open parking lots. There are also sidewalks located near the site and the parking lots. In addition, there are several bus stops on Moraga Avenue.

There is some noise mainly coming from traffic on Graham Street.

The front and the back of the property have a lot of open spaces and greeneries. No adjacent buildings on the left side. As for the right side, there is a small building which does not obstruct a nice view of the Bay. This building is also nearby The Palace of Fine Arts.

On the first level, as you enter the lobby, you have the cafe to the left and the entrance to the exhibition to your right. Guests can buy their tickets for the exhibition and begin their visit. The retail shop is connected to the exhibition, so that the guests can shop once they are exiting the exhibition. Connected to the retail shop is the cafe where guests can grab something to eat or drink while relaxing and enjoying the view of the bay.

The second level is a semiprivate office space. As you enter you will find the reception and seating area. On the right is an office space, designed and organized as an open space, where employees can work together or privately. On the opposite side you will find the rest of the offices, which are closed to offer more privacy. The meeting and conference rooms are located towards the back of the building, offering more privacy when meetings are in session. The restroom and kitchenette are in the middle of the space with easy access to the staff.

Concept

Conceptual Sketches

The National Geographic headquarter is located in The Presidio, a historical landmark, and part of the beautiful Golden Gate National Park. The park is in a wooded area with hills, and scenic vistas overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. The concept for this new project is inspired by the rugged, dramatic, and beautiful Pacific Coastline. When stepping into the National Geographic Headquarters, the visitors are to be transported and their senses awakened. Reminiscent of fresh sea breeze, the sparkling sunsets, the sand crunching underneath each step, and the white noise of the crashing waves.

The concept is to echo the soaring cliffs, the lonely Cypress dramatically incrusted into the rocks, and the sight of the giant and majestic redwood trees of the Pacific coast. The color palette is inspired by the ever-changing colors of the Pacific Ocean, from slate grey to a gentler blue and endless crash of breakers on the shore. The design of this building is to mimic the dramatic, rocky, and beautiful sceneries from the surrounding landscapes with a modern and industrial style, combining natural materials such as marble and wood, as well as polished concrete and tiles. The design reflects and respects the values of the National Geographic Society.

The reception area is to be dramatic, inspired by the soaring cliffs, rocks, and its vegetation. The reception desk incorporates both rock and wood texture in its design. Its countertop is made of a beautiful piece of wood and a thin slab of stone as the leg and base, leaving enough legroom for the receptionist.

Branches from Cypress trees are used as wood paneling, behind the reception desk.

The hanging features from the ceilings are inspired by big waves.

Those are placed in the hallway, creating a sense of movement throughout the space. They are also incorporated in the light fixtures, so it creates a wavy illusion onto to the walls and floors, like the reflection of water on the rocks. On the second level, the frosted rippled glass wall, represent the ocean.
