why the new look?

The redesign of our fruit, nut, seeds and snacks packaging was essential for a number of reasons:

To make product navigation easier and more logical for customers

To engage our customers more with extra product information on pack, emphasising Holland & Barrett’s expertise

To reassure our wise badgers with clear Holland & Barrett branding, reinforcing H&B’s authority

To attract our ‘social butterflies’ with our fresh, fun and friendly look, and approachable tone of voice

To future-proof the range architecture and allow for expansion so new products can be added easily

it all makes sense Our range architecture is now friendly and logical with colours chosen to suit each product category, i.e.: fruit is a juicy purple, nuts an earthy brown, organic a rich green and so on.

Our premium products are darker and richer in colour, emphasising the supremacy of these glorious nibbles. The organic range also uses these richer colour tones as these also have a superior offering and share a premium price point.

This is a Stabilo 1 bag. This is a very small bag, so here we have put NL at the top of the main panel on the left, because when the bag is sealed, the text at the top may be slightly obscured. On larger bag sizes EN would beWIDTH: the first 274mm language.

FILM

This is a Block Base 6 bag. This is a larger bag, so here we have been able to put all 3 languages on the main left panel which looks neater and is easier for customer navigation. However, you will see that the text overlaps clear zone area at the FILM WIDTH:the 390mm top slightly, therefore we have FR here at the top, followed by EN and finally NL.

There is also no space on this small Stabilo 1 to put all 3 languages on this main side, so the FR has to go on the other side in the narrower space.

typography – overprinting 2 step print process We’ve got a lot of different products, and we like to introduce new things into our larder too, so our range is forever changing and expanding. To keep our master film stock at a manageable level, packs are printed in 2 stages. We have the master films printed (ie: fruit stabilo 1 bag size), then we overprint the product specific info afterwards so different products all start life in the same bag film (ie: mouthwatering mandarin, fab fruit surprise, brilliant banana etc would all share the same ST1 fruit film).

step together (avoid tripping up) Okay so how does this overprinted text line up with the pre-printed bag film and how can we ensure that the text doesn’t go anywhere we don’t want it to (like over the heart shaped window for example)?

We have seperate text files which are the maximum area allowed for each bit of text per bag size. The preferred font type and size is already set in these files so you just need to type your words and save the file. The following pages show you how to create these overprint files and the location where they are set (so the black ribbon on the overprinting machine is big enough to print all 3 bits in one go).

creating overprint text files Follow these instructions to create the overprint files in the right format and at the best resolution whilst keeping the file size small enough for easy processing:

setting the text and saving

5) OUTLINE THE TEXT – this is very important, otherwise your exported jpeg will be bigger than it should be as the font will read an invisible field around it

1) Choose the relevent .ai file in the folder ‘MASTER OP AI FILES’

6) Go to File / Export… Choose Format: JPEG

2) Keep the second layer locked as this is the white canvas at correct size

7) In the JPEG Options dialogue choose these settings – note it should be greyscale – this keeps the file size small and managable for the ribbon software

3) Copy and paste the approved text in to the first layer 4) Set the text so that it fits within the document canvas size and is centred

title text averia should be kerned at -60 TIP: If the title is 2 words, one of which is reasonably long, it sometimes looks better on 2 lines, even if it fits on the 1 line.

wotb text GoodDog should be kerned at +30 TIP: Consider the circular form of the speech bubble (ie: 1st and last line to be shorter).

size matters (weight doesn’t) We have 7 different bag sizes. Not all the categories take all the sizes and the bag size needed depends on the bulk, not the weight. For example, a 250g bag of apple rings (apple snaffle) takes the largest BL7 pack, whereas 250g of chopped dates (chunky chopped dates) only needs the ST2 bag size.

overprinting overload (it’s not that bad, promise) Different pack types need different rules for the overprinted text files, font sizes and placement.

The overprint black ribbon is a limited width (100mmW maximum) and length (75mmH maximum), so this needs to be considered when designing the pre-printed film. If the speech bubble for the word of the bird is placed too low down from where the title and the sub-title sit, then the overprinted wotb copy will be too high so won’t match up to the location of the speech bubble.

The following 15 pages detail where the 3 overprinted text areas should be applied to their corresponding pre-printed film.

core

We have a template for each size for the core ranges (we have shown fruit but the same rules apply for the other core ranges (nuts, seeds etc). This also includes the ready to eat ‘good to go’ range.

premium

Premium needs to have slightly different overprint rules: the overall overprint area needs to be narrower to sit within the paler backgound frame.

organic

Organic also needs to have different overprint rules: the area needs to be narrower to sit within the paler backgound frame, the organic farming logo at the top within this pale frame also has to be avoided.
