If you are worried about how exercising in the cold weather might affect your fitness and wellbeing, there are a few steps that you can take to avoid illness and injury.

Know your limits. If you have heart problems or a medical condition such as asthma, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor to see if you need to take any extra precautions before exercising. Understanding your body’s limits and ensuring that you take appropriate medications before exercising can help you stay safe and well during the cold weather.

Stretch and warm-up. During the cold weather, it is common for our muscles to contract to conserve heat. This makes them tighter and more prone to injury. Before exercising on a cold day, remember to stretch your muscles. It will increase your flexibility and range of motion and decrease your chances of getting injured.

Dress in layers. Many people make the mistake of dressing too warmly when exercising in cold weather. Remember, exercising generates sweat, and sweat pulls heat out of your body to cool you down. Dressing in layers that can be removed as you start sweating is a great way to stay warm and dry throughout your entire exercise program.
