DOLLAR GENERAL: PUPP

Monopolydollar - A Research Studio

Dollar General PUPP, or known as pop-up play pavilion, is a deployable, quick-built timber, temporary play pavilion to provide access for DG shoppers to its DG Literacy Foundation - the Yellow Sunglasses Project.

Drawing inspiration and research from Van Eyck’s Playground criticism, green space management, smart city-playful citizen, Parten’s Social Behavior and “From Ritual to Record”, this project proposal allows temporary access to its foundation, promote education for children and adult alike.

Situated in beautiful locations and might seem remote, DG PUPP allows learners and players opportunities not only its literacy access but also exploring the surroundings - scenery, ground condition, and et cetara alike. Modules are made from timber/lumber, with the typical grid 12’ by 12’. Within the modules consits of: roof planks 2x4, column post 4x4, variety of roof designs + notches that assimilate from objects of study Lego and Jigsaw Puzzle. Each pavillion element are made of 5 types of play from Parten’s social behavior, under unorganized play category, specified from the book “From Ritual to Record”, with each characteristic translated into different architectural elements.

ARCHITECTURE AS A PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPERIMPOSED

A NEW HOPE

A new Hope is a children’s arts and cultural hub, designed for the under-served students and communities in MKE-the Harambee/Bronzeville. Inspired by The Poetry Foundation building, the façade is made of perforated sheet, preserves the “mystery” and privacy for occupants. In the meantime, it enables observation from the inside. Entrance from the East side of building also lets the pedestrian and drivers to catch some glimpse of the exhibition art event.

NAVIGATE

All places share similarities. What if 6 fundamental house framing system is all you need? Little twitch here and there, plug-in and retract elements, I present you the architecture that reacts –NAVIGATE Home.

Six main sites from different continents/climate areas, these designs respond to the mother earth – climate conditions from the hottest to the coldest, or per se, the environmental varieties; to the social and economic problems – pricing, surrounding community; and last but not least – the lower environmental impact materials.

PARTI DIAGRAM: SUN, WIND, GROUDN CONDITIONS

Based on the square footage requirement, and three (3) different sites (Lake, Woods, and Hill), this collaborative project between 2 architectural designers aims to create a module that fits all: The system. Dividing into nine (9) different cubes, each can vary into different types of walls and openings depending on the site condition. The focuses are biophilic design and a solution-based design, aiming for net zero energy. Climate and site conditions are essential elements in determining the design ideas and final decisions. These buildings are in cold climates.

In THIRTY FEET, the design process is divided equally between me and my partner. I focus on problem-solving/ technical and research; my partner focused on putting the design together and environmental awareness. The production process is different as well: I was managing and leading the physical + computing models and diagrams, while plans, elevations and sections, and photoshop renders are with my partner’s. What you see in THE WORKS are my contributions only.

THE LAKE

ACCESS AND PROSPECT

Exploded axon explaining what types of walls was used and shading as well as the main parti of the design: access from lake to upper ground and vice versa. The cube modules are more spread out, trying to gain as much access to the southern sun for comfort and warmth in the winter. Privates and public are divided between levels.

THE WOODS

LEVELS AND SCENERY

This design is limited by access to views. The module is a stack of blocks to create different levels of views as well as privacy. The first level is the roots view, then on to the next: animals, the body of trees, up to the branches of trees the highest: sky and birds. For energy efficiency, this design cooperates with water storm collectors for self-farming.

THE HILL SHADING & WIND

High on top, the location attracts lots of wind. By having an operable wind tunnel, this module can control the wind direction (based on data from climate consultants). The tunnel also acts as a greenhouse. The roof is made of ONYX PV panels, which generate energy. Private and public are divided by the wind tunnel section.

ELEVATED EPICS: A RARE BOOKS ARCHIVE, CITY OF MILWAUKEE

A WALKTRHOUGH USING AIA 10 POINTS FRAMEWORK FOR DESIGN EXCELLENCE

MILWAUKEE CITY HALL

The site keeps 3 existing trees and plants 2 new Oak trees which are native to the land. Hundreds of native plants will be used throughout the plaza and green roof, with the purpose of regenerating biodiversity, as much as possible.

On site analysis, land survey for this area is soil clay and loam. As a 2nd rated land, where building construction is tougher, the Archive wants to champion the landscape with a bigger footprint. As soil clay tends to hold moisture longer, it can benefit native planting greatly. The Archive wants to champion the landscape/waterscape with a bigger footprint. Curved pathway for workers from CDC to City Hall, soften the harshness of city life. Extensive green roof + land/waterscape gives all green from satellite view“take green, bring back green” initiative.

Respecting the adjacency to City Hall and of city of Milwaukee, the Archive uses Clevaland Quarry berea sandstone (from City Hall) and Arriscraft high-quality cream brick masonry (MKE Signature) to last for a long time.

With building height has no maximum for C9D zoning + tall surrounding, this site call for a tower . As a highrise, this project follows 2021 IBC Code for Mass Timber High Rise, Contruction Type IV B (Timber).

The Archive will keep street edge like its predecessor the Majestic Hotel, matching the neighbor buildings. Following the adjacency of its context, the Archive is taking a curve edge adjacent to the BMO tower and City Hall. Adding to the majestic and grand feel of the City Hall, The Archive wants to offset the front entrance by having 3 double heighted columns, aligns with the Frank Zeidler Municipal’s column.

RAINWATER MANAGEMENT:

FOR RADIANT HEATING AND COOLING

WATER & CISTERN CALCULATION

The site design has 3 water features, to prepare for a 100 year rainfall event (round 5000 cubic feet of water that needs to retain on site). They will hold and clean storm water on-site to be released to a creek slowly. Storm water that remains will also be reused, to water native plantings on site.

With the climate change, Archive’s site aims to reduce carbon footprint, without the need to import water from elsewhere just to keep the plaza alive. There will also be additional stormwater tanks located under the building.

RESOURCES & ECONOMY

Built from mass timber structure, the Archive embodied carbon in itself which makes a resilient structure strength to last a lifetime. Timber is also known for biophhillic use, promote mental and physical health of its users.

Some materials sourced locally to reduce carbon footprint and bring a sense of belonging for Milwaukee citizen, such as the classic Cleveland Quarry’s Berea Sandstone on Archive’s columns.

The Archive uses the highest budget for material quality and sustainability from mass timber structure + locally sourced materials.

ENERGY

New geothermal wells will be bored deep below the site to provide a closed-loop water system for all heating and cooling of the building.

Smaller footprint building with big curtain wall such as Okawood and skylight, will flood the 3 double-heighted spaces with natural daylight, calling for less electricity usage to meet a new energy efficiency benchmark. In addition, curtain wall system such as Okawood or Mecho shades will also prevent a great amount solar heat gain, further the energy-saving goal.

DESIGN FOR CHANGE: FACADE STUDY AND MASONRY PATTERN

The Archive aims to be easily adaptable for future use, with a simple shape for flexibility of l 15’ x 16’9 bay of timber structure, and as an infill building type where one can easily close/punched a window for an apartment for example.
