this book is dedicated to my parents, for always believing in me and being proud of me no matter what. i’m able to accomplish what i can through their unconditional love and support.

course overview this book is an overview of the work that i completed over the course of semester compiled together. i took this class because i’ve always been passionate about art, and i thought it would be a nice change of pace to do something i love compared to the classes i normally take where i always feel overloaded and sometimes put in a box. this class allowed me to enjoy the creative and artistic side of myself that i haven’t seen in years since i start ed college, and has opened me up to enjoying the artis tic process again and reigniting the passion i once has for it. it has taught me that work takes time, as well as understand that because something doesnt start look ing that best doesnt mean that it wont end up becoming something beautiful. what i will take away from this class is the ability to use my creativity in all aspects of my life and continue to work even if im detered throughout the process.

who designs We started off our class by doing research on a designer on our choosing. I chose Khoi Vinh because of the use of bright colors and bold designs he incorporated into his work.

After doing thorough research on our artist and finding a couple photos of their work, we shared with our other classmated on slack or findings, a quick bio of the artist and their accomplishments, and the photos of our choosing.

Khoi Vinh is a graphic designer from Saigon, South Vietnam. He was born in 1971 in Vietnam and at 3 years old he and his family immigrated to Gaithersburg, Maryland in the U.S. He later pursued an education in graphic design at Otis College of Art and Design and obtained his degree in 1993. He kickstarted his career with a move to New York and immediately began working through the internet on media platforms and with blog posting. He gained experience by forming a design study called “Behavior” in 2001 and would go on to get a job at The New York Times. His role at The New York Times would be the most Pivotel time in his career, as he aided in leading the company for 4 years and being a director in design for 1. More recently Vinh has been a designer at Adobe and also founded Lascaux CO. Inc which is a mobile design tool used to create picture collages. He’s also an author and has a book published called “Ordering Disorder: Grid Principles for Web Design.” If you check out his personal blog, subtraction.com, you can find more of his work and writing about design, technology, and film! During his career, Vinh has really focused on creating a creative outlet for consumers for the big company’s he’s worked at as well as creating aesthetic digital design concepts. Because of his impact in the design world, Fast Company named him one of “The 50 Most Influential Designers in America” and one of “Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2019.”

dot-line For the dot line project we were required to find a way to express a feeling or emotion on paper using only dots and lines cut out of paper. After sketching different thumbnails, I went on to pick my three favorites and exdcute them. This project really required me to use my imagination and simply be creative while still retaining the feeling and emotion the piece had to get across.

Gestalt is how we perceive things or our perceptions of art, maybe in times when the interpretation is of something that is so simple and will really be what you make of it or “in the eye of the beholder.”

I think in general, especially when it came to this project where there were small details that took a lot of precision, it can be tricky for me at times because of how shaky my hands are. However, when I start a project and invest in it, I want to make it my version of perfect because of how much time and effort I put into it, so I would rather spend extra time if it gets what I envision to translate in my finished work.

Before this project, I thought of abstraction as a bunch of shapes thrown onto a piece of paper, to come out with something natural and organic thats looks beautiful. But now, I realize that even if at first glance it might look like that, there was probably a lot of thought that went into it to create the emotion and interpretation that we recognize when we look at abstract pieces.

It was pretty hard to portray an emotion without illustrating them, because we were limited to only lines and dots out of paper I think it was a really good way for us to think outside of the box and use our creativity to get the emotions across instead of just drawing it. It made the process really unique and thought provoking and we all were able to create such different things.

I think you could use the exercise to become more precise and detail oriented, because there’s some leeway in certain types of art this project was nice because it required us to have really good attention to detail and to take our time to put everything together.

letterforms For our second project of the semester we were required to use letterforms. We used pieces of linoleum to carve out every letter of the alphabet and had to use those to execute our letterforms. We used black ink rolled onto the letter and stamped them on the paper in unique ways to go Long with the word of our choosing. I picked the word “crime,” and I found I had to use outside of the box methods to portray my word while only using ink and pre cut letters.

in-process prints I think I learned that there are so many variations you can do with just one font.

As I worked throughout this project, I realized that even though we were using the same letters, that I could make the word look much more different depending on what I did creatively than I thought originally when we started. I thought at first that anything I made was going to look the same because we were using the same font, but it was really cool as I went on that I noticed that once I incorporated my own unique and creative pieces and style the word looked drastically different in each piece, but because we used the same font came together cohesively at the same time and looked like a unit together.

I would find some more creative ways to integrate the words with the actual drawing pieces or creative aspects. I really liked what I did with the footprints turning into the i in my one piece, so I’d like to see how I could do that again with something else. I’d also like to improve on the kind of “internet theft” idea I was working on with the coding, and I’d like to refine it to make it look better and cleaner, as well as again make the word crime more integrated with the coding instead of it looking like I just slapped it over the background.

iterative illustrations For our third project we did iterative illustrations. We first picked an animal or object of our choosing, I chose a black panther because of what it represents and its history. We were then required to draw our animal is 6 different forms; 2 master artist, 1 continuous line, 1 geometric, 1 collage, and 1 typographic collage iterations.

This required us to be able to change our style and conform to whatever style of iteration we had to do.

in-process print I learned that it’s much harder to convey my object than I had originally anticipated. It was especially challenging to portray the strength and intimidating aura that a black panther has through drawing it, and it was so intricate to draw that there were times I felt I didn’t convey it realistically or detailed enough.

I learned a lot more about my object than I expected to. I was really focused on the artistic and creative aspect of the project, but once I started to do research to get inspiration I found a lot of different meanings behind the panther. There was the black panther party which has political connotation and the marvel character portrayed by Chadwick Boseman who died at a young age from colon cancer and became such an inspiration for especially young people of color.

final print I would definitely want to incorporate some of it’s political meaning into later pictures, I think some of the history behind the black panther is important to talk about and putting it in art if a great way for people to learn about it.

I learned about the ability to use the different layers to make edits to specific parts of the picture without altering the entire thing. I utilized the layers a ton to perfect certain parts of my picture at a time so it could become one cohesive image once it was finished. I also used the brush tool often to draw out certain flaws or mistakes which became super helpful for cleaning up my images while still being pretty efficient.

psa posters For our last project we did PSA posters.

We were given a PSA topic from a peer and were then required to make it into a poster that did an effective job at informing the client and readers of why the PSA is important. My PSA was Pink Tax which discusses the discrimination of women on product pricing. I chose bold text and text boxes and a pink background to associate the color with “feminine” aspect of the message.

Because of everything I learned over my semester of design, I was able to create an amazing final project for my human lifespan development psychology class. I utilized my new ability to plan, design, and execute a project in a creative way. Because of all of the intircate work we did with with our hands and material items, my watch looked realistic and had functioning abilites I was able to think of because I learned how to think unqiuely and out of the box. The final project was a watch designed for pregnant mothers with different watch faces to track calorwies, baby size, heart rate of the baby, and reminders that would aid in the mother and babies emotional and physical wellbeing as well as help the mother feel connected to the baby throughout pregnancy. I was really happy with how it came out and extremely proud of what I was able to accomplish with it, and decided to include it as a part of this book as a marker of what design was able to teach me and open my mind to.
