NEXT University is a resource for higher education located in Washington DC. The goal of NEXT is to change “the paradigm of learning,� which includes reaching an urban population, students of all ages, and adapt to a variety of learning styles. One of the ways they plan to achieve this is by opening the hub in the East End neighborhood in downtown DC. This hub will span two floors of a boutique building on F Street, which is right in the center of a bustling neighborhood. To accommodate for the differences in background and ages of the students of NEXT, there are many requirements to the space. Some of these include childcare, seminar classrooms, one-on-one learning spaces, and in-between learning spaces.



The NEXT Hub will emulate the era in which the East End became “the place to be”: the 90’s. Drawing inspiration from the bright color scheme and geometric patterns of 90’s , the Hub will be a lively space that provides a daily dose of upon those who make use of the space. The goal is not to create a literal and outdated space, but spaces that interpret the patterns and hues of the 90’s into something modern, sophisticated, and fit for the 2020’s.

Because nostalgia gives us shared experiences with another person, it can help to bring individuals closer together and more tolerable of strangers.

Most college students deal with poor mental health, whether it be about classes, social life, or other commitments. With a fun, nostalgic space like the NEXT hub, the goal is to improve their mental health as well as make them excited to go to class and learn!

Nostalgia has been found to raise one’s mood and help with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and lonliness.
