Good design marries beauty and function. However, it is not enough to simply arrive at this union. Great design must mirror the human heart. Design holds the power to shape attitudes and behaviors, and so should be used with skill and care. As we breathe into a space it can breathe life, inspiration, and happiness into us. An effective designer recognizes this connection and relies on creative thinking to elevate a space beyond aesthetics, creating a sanctuary. This place of refuge empowers and changes us. Design’s transformative nature is key to inspiring the human spirit.
NEW CONSTRUCTION | 50,000 SQFT
JACKSONVILLE, FL
One of the leading mechanical contractors in Northeast Florida, W.W. Gay has been an iconic part of the Jacksonville community since 1962. In the midst of a renovation design, a fire destroyed a portion of the old office, and the project direction changed to provide W.W. Gay with a new 50,000 SF office building. The design leans heavily on industrial cues, with exposed ceilings throughout, raw wood looks, stained concrete, and dark, masculine colors. Previously, their offices had been a maze of long corridors, and the new design took great care to incorporate wide passageways that double as public gathering and collaborative spaces. The floor plan was designed to encourage chance encounters along a central spine, to increate workplace community and connection.

The users reviewed over seven diagrammatic options for the overall layout prior to finalized interior floor plans. As the group had been in makeshift conditions for many years, the team spent countless hours working through programming to develop space needs alongside the users. The end result was a quadrant- based layout, where enclosed office surrounded open office space. All spaces were connected with a central “spine” through the building. Here color was overlayed on the plans to show users seating counts and grwoth potential for the new office.

A prominent feature of the Jacksonville skyline, the Wells Fargo building is home to many professionals in the downtown area. Wood feature walls incorporate warmth and elevate the interior palette. Once the building re-opened after the Coronavirus pandemic, users can be found taking calls and working remotely from the lobby. RENOVATION
RENOVATION & PROTOTYPES | 16,000 SQFT
JACKSONVILLE, FL
In a post-COVID19 market, Stellar Design-Build Construction Company aimed to reimagine their corporate headquarters for greater employee engagement and retention in the returnto-office. After more than two years of fully remote work, the project would require a full interior demolition of the existing spaces to provide for employee needs in today’s job market. The design focused on providing a balance of personal and public spaces to encourage employee collaboration, while also offering the comforts of work-from-home. The project featured a brandnew employee hub social space and prototype designs for the remaining (3) floors of office space. In reaction to shortcomings of past open office concepts, additional private and enclosed flex spaces were provided to meet a growing demand for better acoustic performance and focused environments within the office. This flexible balance of shared and individual space better served the needs of the company for retention of existing staff and attraction of new up-and-coming talent.

Key to the success of the project was brand implementation. A overall subtle palette with pops of bold color represented the balance of traditional company values that also celebrate of entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. Ceiling and lighting design play large roles in bringing interest to the design, and additionally help to ground otherwise large open spaces. Strong clean lines in the design speak to the strong company roots and nod to their celebration of forward-thinking attitudes.

BAPTIST HEALTH PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

NEW CONSTRUCTION ADDITION | 8,600 SQFT
BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER SOUTH, JACKSONVILLE, FL
This Pediatric Emergency Department was an interior buildout of existing shell space with a dedicated pediatric lobby addition. The design of the project was driven by two existing sites - the Freestanding Emergency Department at the St. Johns Town Center and Wolfson Children’s Hospital in downtown Jacksonville, FL. These two facilities represent the client’s commitment to bring convenient emergency services into local communities and provide high-quality children’s services.
Architectural cues were borrowed to develop a unique design with a strong shared brand identity. The interior concepts were driven by Wolfson Children’s Hospital’s brand connection with aquatic life, bringing bright color, flowing lines, playful lighting, and ocean imagery to the space. Speed to market was of upmost importance to the client. A fast-paced process was implemented that took a high level of collaboration and coordination with the client, contractor, and consultants.
PROJECT STATUS: Completed 2019

EXTERIOR RENDERING
The site landscape was highly connected to the interior concepts to create a cohesive package between interior and exterior. A river rock and concrete sidewalk design took direction from the floor pattern plan within the lobby space. The design becomes reminiscent of waves lapping upon the shore as you move from the parking lot into the vestibule space. Early conceptual sketches show the development of ideas that ultimately helped drive the landscape design. As a designer, one’s impact is not limited to the interior of the building, and a holistic approach creates thoughtful and interesting design throughout.

RETAIL DESIGN INSTITUTE AWARD WINNER
STUDENT WORK | 12,000 SQFT
FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY, STUDIO LEVEL 3
This store prototype was developed for the 2016 Retail Design Institute’s International Student Design Competition. Winning 1st Place, this project exemplified the project goals of developing a conveinience store brand that followed current market trends. Convenience brands are beginning to shift towards more consumer-friendly environments. The FÜEL UP brand is especially interested in the promotion of well-being, brand trust, and shopping experience satisfaction. With recent convenience store trends turning towards healthier options like made-to-order meals and fresh snacking choices, the concept of a farmers market was chosen for the store prototype. Farmers markets have traditionally been an arena for community engagement, local pride, and wellness efforts. In a similar way, FÜEL UP will act as a local hub for quick, healthy shopping that will work to promote a friendly environment. The incorporation of a café and local produce section will encourage users to pursue better food selections. The FÜEL UP store will work to set a new standard for the convenience store experience that promotes a holistic approach to healthy living.
TOPICS: Retail Trends, Wayfinding + Signage, Consumer Habits, Brand Identity, Technology in Interiors
TOOLS: Revit Wireframes, Photoshop

Consumers have become increasingly aware of health and vitality, but the convenience market is behind in this trend. The new FÜELUP retail environment will cater to these needs by providing freshly made meals, options for all dietary needs, a clean environment, and opportunities to make healthy food swaps. A business model that encourages consumer trust and employee satisfaction will create community pride.
FÜELUP Convenience Markets strive to be simple to use, easy to clean, and healthy for all.
